It seems that the majority of Nexus owners here aren't too impressed with the new Nexus S. The manufactor is samsung, the specs are tame, and the hardware is at the current market's standard; more or less. The only reasons I see for an upgrade is for having the status and guarantee of getting future update first, pure google experience, and a slight update to the Nexus One. Gingerbread is moot since we'll be getting it as our last priority update.
With that being said, what device will stray you away from the best android phone ever? Any dual core slut? A hardware beast like the EVO?
The only phone that's stopping me from purchasing a Nexus S is the LG Star with dual core. However, do we know if this phone will follow Samsung's strategy of releasing to multiple carriers? Will it be a pure google flavor? Updates will surely be slow but how will the development community be for this phone?
Honestly my only criteria comes down to which device will be supported by this community. Software is a moot point when you have great developers improving it in everyway possible. I would really like to know what device Cyanogen will fall in love with!
Fairly cheap (yeah right)
Dual core
5mp or higher camera
Sexy looks
Notification led (seriously, why are manufacturers leaving this off?)
Hard keyboard (preferably)
Camera flash
HDMI out
Trackball
Good battery life (I guess this can be worked on by devs)
Seperate audio out jack
Good screen (bright, scratch resistant, non smudge, etc.)
No pointless search button (it just annoys me)
At least 1gig of ram (at the VERY least!)
Decent internal storage
Can't think of anything else.
Yeah... I think ill be waiting a while

Non-Samsung stock android phone.
I for one prefer Samsung hardware... sure it may be more plasticy than HTC phones, but the hardware is superior. The Galaxy touchscreen is far more accurate and smoother at tracking, can also handle up to 5 simultaneous inputs (MT4G can only do 4 and choppier). You'll never have dust under the screen with their AMOLED screens since the glass is practically on top of the screen, unlike HTC devices. The camera unit is superior to all HTC 5mp sensors (just by looking at it, the aperture is larger). The external speaker on the Galaxy S line is also superior to the N1's, MT4G, G2, etc. - better bass reproduction and less tinny, also louder. The quality of audio through headphones... also better because of Samsung's sound chip. All in all, there's not many things from a hardware perspective that HTC does better. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Camera nexus one is better - more pixels not mpx but some more pixels, sound through headphones is dependent on equaliser and stuff so with CM6 and poweramp u get mind blowing sound, EVO and incredible can handle infinite touches, u can stick any glass to the screen. Thing thing is if glass breaks screen is gonna break 99% and if its not stuck to screen there are chances the display will remain good. It has both good and bad points. Every screen doesnt have dust under it, None of my HTC phones ever did, dont know about speaker but audio through did sound awful on galaxy s

this and decent build quality, like the nexus one.
one thing i'd really need is a better/louder speaker, the n1 one sucks soooo much.
I'm hoping the Motorola Olympus on ATT will be as good as the rumors - I'm on an ATT Nexus One since March, and have got the upgrade bug for a few reasons:
1. bigger screen - 3.7" is too small for me. 4.3" would be ideal, but I need a phone on ATT because I'm due for an upgrade and I can sell the N1 for about what I'd get a new phone on contract on ATT.
2. better touch screen, the N1 has occasional (although rare) issues with touch screen accuracy, not to mention no true multitouch. (not really a problem, other than in an occasional game or rotating in some apps)
The additional upgrades, such as the rumored 1GB of ram and the upgraded cpu/gpu, are all icing on the cake. Hopefully it'll be compatible with Netflix's requirement for additional DRM on Android phones, and that's gravy on top of the icing on the cake.
1GHz+ Dual core processor
3.7" display
1,024 MB RAM
850/1900 MHz 3G bands
Aluminum unibody design
At least 16 GB of storage (whether onboard, or available slot for expansion)
Better speakerphone
Dual Core!
1GB Ram
3.7" (no larger than 4")
SD Card Slot *cough*
Non-plastic
Stock Android
I guess it's pretty much the same thing as the Nexus One but Dual Core and higher Ram. I'm hoping next year's Google's "baby" will be back to HTC (please don't make it Samsung or Moto)
I know we're all excited about dual core but do you think Android will take advantage of it? Is the speed really going to be noticable?
I really just want dual core for the battery savings aspect and better gaming.

You're almost guaranteed dual core will make battery life worse, not better.
For a dual core to be any better, the computation efficiency needs to have a sharper gradient than that of the power efficiency. Or else, running a single core for X time might mean less power than running 2 cores for Y time.
Besides, the reason i hate my nexus one is the abysmal touch screen. It gets confused ALL the F'ing time.
* 1gb Ram
* min. 8 GB internal Memory
* outside microSD Card Slot
* Audio Jack
* phy. TRACKBALL with notification (frozen bubble anyone?)
* sexy design like my N1 <3
Like the N1 the use of a next Gen chip.
Comparable or superior camera/camcorder than iPhone.
SOME kind of colored notification system. Whether led or led trackball.
Min 4" screen preferably 4.3
HD display.
App storage...Touch screen...GPS/wifi/3g etc..batterylife.
None of those things should be an issue.
Give me at least 2-3 of the top portion...and all of Tue bottom I'd switch asap.
Hmmm
The Nexus One is near perfect.
If I had to upgrade I would consider the following:
Sexy Looks
1ghz Processor; probably Dual Core since that seems to be the direction we're heading
4" Max Properly working Super/Amoled Screen
Front Facing Camera for laughs
Enough Ram
Rootable Android
TrackBall or Smart Dpad
I LOVE the trackball on the Nexus. I have a BlackBerry Tour with an optical sensor and I hate it. While it DOES work, it lacks sensitivity and accuracy. Both gaming and office/texting/website entry all benefit from having a trackball. Selecting text on my Blackberry is a pain. Also using a full touch method blows chunks too, similar to the iApple and Android Web Browser method. It's hard to select JUST the text you want.
Other stuff should just work. Also a hot-swappable microSD card would be nice. Although I really never have to remove it using Android, the occasional pulling of pictures and stuff is faster to just pull the SD card = no phone.
Even though I don't currently use the Desktop or Car port, I think the idea of having such is great. I'm wanting a few Desk docks for my office and bed side but waiting on some good prices.
Honestly, I don't see any amount of hardware changes that would make me switch, that is until Honeycomb comes out. The Nexus, while having it's fair share of issues, is getting Gingerbread before even most new phones will get it and will run the new software just fine. So to me there's no point switching to any other phone except the Nexus S and that's only if you want the latest gadget/tech toy. I know alot of you guys drool over dual core but it's not like android is pushing 1st gen snapdragons to the limit yet. I'll let the software catch up to the current tech before I make a switch.
My dream phone? It'd have:
fastboot oem unlock
A trackball, or an optical one but with a rim that lights up (for notifications), a la E71
A processor speedy enough to carry day-to-day stuff, not necessarily dual-core
A LARGE /data partition (at least 1GB)
Working multi-touch
A keyboard (I got used to touchscreens for typing, but I still consistently type faster with my N900, even though I barely use it today)
At least triband HSPA/HSPA+ (900, 1700, 2100), like the Nexus One has, when I have to go to North America (I'm currently in Europe, and no, we don't only use 2100 MHz, we're slowly switching everything to 900 MHz)
Quality materials, like the N1 has
Basically, I want a Desire Z but easily unlockable by supported methods, and tri-band HSPA+. I know it's stupid to avoid the DZ because of the radio, but if I buy it in Europe with the right keyboard layout for my language (French AZERTY), I also want to be able to use it in NA.
For me, it would have to be the camera and hardware of the phone (style). I don't really give a toot about processor speeds.
One phone that really fits my criteria is the Nokia N8 but, unfortunately, the software on that phone is terrible. If it had Android on it, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Anyone else thinking about switching over to it? Just got my incredible last Saturday so im considering switching over to it instead... Anyone else got any thoughts on it? Im for sure interested in the 720p capture (but cant DI be upgraded for that in the future?) we already have the tv out (without a cord yet) but will it be the same capabilities as DI can have, im not sure. My biggest things are the better processor (still worried about heat issues on it tho, perhaps unwarranted) and the 4.3 inch TFT 24 bit display (really concerned at how that looks over the AMOLED screens we have now on DI) I am currently only a week in with the DI and have had problems with the phones hardware so I can either get full refund or trade it in for the Droid X within the 30 days from store or trade in from VZW tech support (since i had problems and no other units are available to RMA mine with some problems they gave me extended upgradeability incase i had to get another phone until more are available) so im just tryin to pick pros and cons and so far i am loving the size and feel of the DI but I do have battery issues as well and a bigger battery on the X is a great feature.... the shape looks a little bulky on top which might be great but may feel bad as well.... anyone who has anything to add I would greatly apprecieate your input... im afraid until I can play with a X I may not know tho... the 3 microphones and the top and bottom antenna are really sweet 2... this phone sounds pretty sweet.

I am wary and here is why:
Have you seen how hard they are pushing the Droid X? TV, website, e-mail ads, plus they are offering free upgrades, low price, wifi hotspot i mean it goes on and on.
Plus there is the rumor they want to phase out the Incredible
Well, this makes me think not only is Motorola paying Verizon beaucoup bucks to be their top Droid provider, but that this phone is going to be the droid phone that Verizon pushes on everyone cheaply and fast. Cheaply and fast usually mean bad news.
NOt to mention if u want the vids the damn thing is HUGE.. I like the incredibleness's sleek small design, i want LEss weight. Sure the doird X will be a real nice huge screened media player, but it is going to be one heck of a pocket weight. Plus what is that screen going to do to the battery?
I will be getting one because my brother is going to take the Incred or the X based on which one i DONT want, but as of now, the incredible is looking better, especially with SenseUI over MotoBlah (blur).
Side by side comparison here:
Except for the noise canceling & HDMI output I don't see too much that the X has on the Inc now that we have root and froyo is inevitable... It's a bigger phone and thus a bigger screen, but the weight factor alone is what does it for me- A buddy of mine has the Evo, and at 6 grams, its heafty. I don't know how he does it. I picked it up and it felt twice as heavy as the inc (I know it's not).. For a quick idea, pick up your incredible and put your mouse ontop of it, that's about how heavy the Evo feels. Do you really want that in your pocket?
Plus, with a bigger screen and more mass behind it- it's more susceptible to damage in a fall (of which I've already dropped my Inc a few times without issue). I'm still not sold on Motorola's quality- If I had the opportunity to try it out, I would- but I would never jump in without at least a test drive...
The only thing that makes me yearn, well two things actually.
1. I live in a hollar and the 3G signal is very weak. I have a Network Extender but the Incredible battery still dies pretty quick. I know there are tweaks but I shouldn't have to tweak the phone to get a reasonable amount time out of my battery. My wifes Droid (formerly mine) last a lot longer.
2. On a related note the Droid radio was much stronger then the Incredible. I drop calls once in awhile with the Incredible while I don't think I ever dropped one with the MotoDroid unless I made a call in my house and then drove away.
I know it's huge but I didn't mind the weight of the MotoDroid at all and liked the metal case.
We'll see I guess.

Motorola historically has a stronger radio and ALWAYS has pushed the to the edge of what the FCC allows the SAR limit to be. Meaning? When you have a Motorola device close to your body (head, hip, etc) you are exposing yourself to much greater risk of cancer. This alone is reason enough for me to steer clear of Motorola devices, and their cellular devision is in MY State!
HTC is the coolest devices made in my opinion. I wouldn't have any other device (so far).
Just my 2 cents.
2 bad we cant have the samoled screens until 2012..the galaxy boasts alot but i really love the feel of the dinc.....galaxy is anothdr runner up for me 2...guess we get specs real soon

As far as your battery life on the incredible, try the one time charging method recommended by HTC. My battery life has been 30-50% better.

It's a myth that cell phone radiation causes cancer. Not all radiations do. You have a higher chance of getting cancer from the bio toxins produced during stress by your body than RF radiation. The media tends to hype topics they know nothing about just for ratings. Look at the platic bottle myth. Fact is there are no dioxins in plyetholine bottles (bottled water bottles). Research has actually shown that cell phone radiation helps prevent and reverse the effects of alzheimer's. It just takes a little research to not fall into the flock.
I know what you mean
I too am considering switching from Inc to X. I was sold until I read about lag/artifact issues with Motoblur. The thing that I love most about the Inc is that it runs so flawlessly. My biggest reason I traded in my N1 for the Inc was that the N1's UI was flawed (yes I know it ran on stock Android), so the idea of taking a step backward in that regard is unappealing. However, I, for one, love the idea of having a bigger screen and SWYPE, which should make texting and data input a breeze. I know the processor on the X is made my TI, but I have found the Inc's Snapdragon to be awesome, so that's not a huge factor to me. Nor is the HDMI (although it would be nice if a TV out cord would come out for the Inc, despite not being HDMI). The Inc is rooted, the but process is such a PITA that I am not going to bother with it anymore until it is simplified (this is by far the thing I miss most about the N1). Basically, the X has some small advantages, but an inferior UI. So I guess I am back where i started--unsure of which device to go with.
I really wanted a moto because of the better cell reception but ended up getting an incredible yesterday. After having an evo for 20 days or so I got tired of trying to use the device one handed (it was do-able but not comfortable for me) and wanted something that felt more like my nexus.
(the x being bigger I couldn't imagine feeling comfortable with it)
Another thing that bothered me (XD OCD I swear) was the lack of color on the screen and I'm not sure about going back to lcd because of that. Though I know it could have been just the evo's screen in this case as I don't know the exact specs on the X.
I'm not a huge fan of the Inc's radio thus far, but I firmly believe we'll see an update soon that improves it greatly. It's a hallmark of HTC phones - first version, radio sucks. Second version, radio improves a bit but something else suffers (usually battery), third version is like the three little bears, juuuuuust right

The test videos show there is not MotoBlur on, it is actually disabled by default. All the recent test videos show straight Android with Moto widgets, no blur overlay.
I'm keeping my Inc. I'll save a little cash and watch as the Dev's really unlock the power of this little beast. Plus I'm not keen on Motoblur. I guess I'm the only one who's wondering why the Droid 2 is launching only a few months behind the X... I'll just wait a few months and see.
Actually I'm hoping that the Droid X release prompts HTC to crank out some goodies for the Incredible like a multimedia station and car dock.
Where are you HTC?
Pretty sure im going to be keeping my dinc, i do like the thought of a big screen for media viewing but i am really not to keen on buying another phone from motorola. I had the droid and had nothing but problems. What i would really like is for htc come out with a 4" screen and nice slide out qwerty like on the touch pro 2.
ehh...
Im not spending 600 dollars on a phone that's slightly better than mine sorry. Nor am I going to waste my upgrade on a the x. The inc is basically a smaller evo without the hdmi and front facing cam. I just don't see any point in switching except bragging rights. I won't lie the x looks great but I can wait.. next year is going to be crazy..lte, more 4 inch devices, and front facing cams will probably standard maybe even two ghz devices.
And hello this phone came out two months ago its not outdated.
I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Motorola. They have made the best pure cell phones I've had (an old StarTAC analog and an e815). The radios were unparalleled, and voice quality was very good.
But the Inc is the best all-around personal computing/communication/information device I've ever owned, and it is not much bigger than those old Moto phones of yore. It's the same size as the Samsung Omnia I had previously, but has 4x the screen resolution, is a better pure phone, and has none of the lag and performance issues the Sammy had (even with custom ROMs and task managers).
It sounds (from the 2 reviews I've read) like the Droid X will continue Motorola's tradition of good phone performance. But its large size might put me off. Also, apparently the HDMI-out is not supported by most of the phone's apps. And you'll probably have to wait awhile for rooting, if you are into that sort of thing (I just rooted my Inc this evening).
I think either would be a great choice, especially if I didn't have to shell out more money for the Moto. It would probably come down to whichever one they could get me the quickest
I like my DI especially now that its rooted, but given the free chance to trade to the moto x I probably would. The droid x has a gpu, and a larger screen. Plus I like motorola, they havent had any inventory problems so the dev community would probably grow quickly. I would have to hold it in my hand to see if it was too big or not, but I think it would be nice to have the larger screen. It would use up a ton of battery but I would just buy a couple extra.
I dont think its worth an upgrade for full price but its a nice option. There will be phones with dual core chips and gpu's and whatever else all coming by the end of the year im sure. Ill wait a little bit more.
I don't really see any reason to pay another 500+ dollars for a phone that semi better than the inc. My new every 2 is up April of next year and i'm sure by then we'll have dual core CPU and maybe even 1 GB ram with a nice GPU only time can tell. Think i'm going to hold out on any new phones until next year sad to see iPhone 4 spank the inc but ill live.
No thanks. I'm very happy and have no desire for something larger. I AM looking forward to prospective updates, though.
I`m a bit confused right now ... i really loved the HTC evo 4G but since i live in India ... i cant get my hands on that...
The only good phones i am left with are desire , xperia x10 or samsung galaxy
Pls let me know which one should i go for
And i wanted to know how are the games in galaxy .. are they even comparable to iphone games??...
Hey there fellow Indian
I bought my phone a couple of weeks ago. To me, Xperia X10 wasn't even an option. It doesn't run 2.1, is very laggy according to all the reviews I checked, and is very overpriced given its drawbacks (32k in Bangalore two weeks ago).
So me and a friend were trying to decide between the Desire and SGS. On paper, SGS out-specs the Desire in almost every single aspect. Yet, the prices of the two phones were comparable. And that alone more than convinced me to buy the Galaxy. My friend, however, was of the opinion that he couldn't live without the Sense UI on the Desire. So he bought that one.
2 weeks later, I'm majorly disappointed with the Galaxy. GPS sucks to the core, there's almost always a lag when launching an app (anywhere between 1 and 6 seconds). His Desire, despite being a lot less powerful, is extremely snappy for everyday use. He's very happy with his choice. I really really hope the GPS issue is just a software one and not anything hardware related, and that a future update fixes it (although I'm starting to get skeptical). But I'm pretty sure the lag problem will be fixed pretty soon. I won't regret my decision if the GPS gets fixed. But if not, I'm never touching another Samsung ever again!!
About the games, no, there aren't as many good games for Android as for the iPhone. Only a handful of good graphic ones. I have a lot more games I like on my 1st gen iPod Touch than on my SGS.
Pick wisely. Good luck!
I almost got the X10, but for me the decision that swung me to the galaxy S was multitouch (the X10 keyboard is really bad because of the bad touchscreen) and two was the amount of media that will play on the galaxy S.
My workmate has the desire and it is damn nice, its a matter of preference really.
I do miss having the little optical tracker from an Samsung.
Well I have to admit that there are some issues with the SGS. The GPS was simply unusable before the JM2 firmware and the lags used to be quite bad too (but there are fairly simple fixes for that issue around here). The GPS is annoying but doesn't bug me as much since I can figure out where I am on a map within a minute even in big cities and the network based locations makes that even quicker so gps in general has very little added advantage for me. But: It's still far from good on the newest firmware and samsung still has to work on that.
The lags, however, I find to be almost completely gone if you use the latest firmware in combination with a task killer (i personally use autokiller on strict preset).
And altough I never noticed much difference for snappiness when compared to my friends desire, I have to say that the touchscreen on the SGS is so much more accurate and responsive. World of difference here.
As for comparison to the iPhone on games: Games for Android suck because Android applications in general have a lower quality level that iPhone apps. They just aren't as mature. For the games that do have good graphics, however, the SGS wipes the floor with anything apple can provide (yes, also the iPhone 4. The GPU of the SGS is some 3 times more powerful than that in the iP4)
The device specific issues (GPS and lags) will very likely be fixed in the official froyo release that is due somewhere next month and anything beyong that is a general issue for android which will gradually fade as google allows checkout methods other than creditcards (which are rather uncommon among european users) and devs realize that android is a market with absolutely speaking even more potential than iPhone because it's growing like crazy and the first android phones with good specs for about 130e are being released (a market in which apple simply cannot compete)
Edit:
At the moment (weighing all the issues that haven't been fixed as well as specs and future-proofness) I would say the following:
Desire=SGS>iP4<iP3GS
(For now, the desire is softwarewise almost flawless, however, the hardware is outdated compared to the SGS, inferior screen, crappy GPU, much less accurate touchscreen BUT everything is working whereas the SGS still has its issues. The iP4 has a mechanical design error (deathgrip) which is simply not present on any other phone on the market today and which makes calling in the position I find comfortable simply impossible. The iP3 works great but comes nowhere near the SGS or even the desire in terms of internal hardware. Only it touchscreen accuracy can beat the desire and the screen quality (especially resolution) is simply awful.)
Err... better don't discuss iPhone here. I might be tempted to tear down every arguments put up against it. LOL.
I was hugely disappointed when I first purchased after having owned and sold ky black desire which I was extremely happy with. That was 2 weeks ago after rooting and flashing JM2 firmware I'm extremely happy. Sammy gs is definitely better then any mobile out there at the moment, screen resolution is superior sound is superior camera video playback etc etc pretty much on every term. It's smooth fast and looks good. Touchwiz is not great buti customize is a breeze.
The sgs is 3 times faster than the iphone 3gs, the iphone 4 has the a4 cpu/gpu wich is same as sgs except for minor changes made by apple
For gaming I would definitly go for iphone at the time, android gaming is still a bit lacky so the sgs's hardware wont show it's power for now
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
If apps are The most important factor then go with the iPhone 4 definitely, don't get wrong Android market does have somebrilliant apps however Apple have superior apps. But if you're looking for the best mobile experience in regards to the basic functions ie making calls text messaging emails and internet surfing then go with Sammy gs no question. Customization is brilliant whereas iPhone has and awful awful UI. One of the reasons I hate iPhone and + can't customize it as easily without jail breaking etc.
The SGS' GPU is better than the iPhone 4's: it's the PowerVR SGX 540, which is twice as fast as the SGX 535 in the iPhone 4. The larger market (and, probably, fewer hardware platforms) of the iPhone does mean that it has more and better-quality games though.
Those are the three phones I was considering also, since the EVO 4G isn't available in the UK (no CDMA networks for a start!), and I've decided now to go for the Galaxy S based on its hardware.
The only advantage the Xperia X10 has for me is its LCD-based screen; the others both have AMOLED screens on which text is less sharp due to the PenTile layout, but have higher contrast. Running Android 1.6 and apparently being generally slow count against it, and I have no interest in its TimeScape/MediaScape UIs. It only got rooted pretty recently despite being out for months, and it seems the bootloader hasn't been bypassed yet, so it's not looking like a great development platform.
The Desire has an AMOLED screen, but not Super AMOLED like the Galaxy S, so its sunlight visibility is worse, and its screen is smaller. It also doesn't have a good capacitive digitiser - I believe it only supports two points, and those can get swapped over. However, it has the generally well-thought-of Sense UI, and an active development community.
The Galaxy S has the best CPU (by a little) and the best GPU (by a lot), and the Super AMOLED screen ameliorates one of the drawbacks to having AMOLED (though text is still not as crisp as on an LCD). It seems it will have a decent development community, which is frustratingly fragmented on XDA since it has 5 different forums for the international version and the the 4 US variants. It's rooted and has a factory-unlocked bootloader though. The main drawbacks seem to be the lagging issue, which appears to be improved on newer firmwares, and can be fixed with the external SD card kernel, and the GPS problem, which various users have reported improvements with, but which isn't too critical for me. All my phones always seem to have slow GPS locks, and I don't use them for navigation. It also doesn't have a camera flash, but I rarely use the camera, and it lacks notification LEDs, which is a minor nuisance but there's already a program around to put a notification on the screen.
My perfect device built with current components would have a 4.3" LCD (not AMOLED), a 1GHz Hummingbird, have hardware front buttons, run HTC Sense and have a good chance of getting future Android updates, whether official or not. Unfortunately there is no such phone, and the closest won't work where I live, so I have to go with the phone that has the fewest compromises in areas I care about. So I'm going for the Galaxy S because software problems can be fixed, but hardware can't be changed.
My point of view, I owned all of them, I now use the SGS and love it
Desire - PRO`s - HTC Sense, Better FW, the opaque plastic wich is made of, more hand friendly, good screen (it uses less power than the super amoled, judging from the readings of the android), good sound quality, good camera with LED flash;
CON`s - Battery, touch pannel (I push the Menu button and the Notification pannel slides down for ex., and is too darn sensitive) crapy CPU, slow GFX, no EQ;
X10 - PRO`s - Battery is very good (lasts for 3-4 days with moderate usage), design, 8MP Camera with Image Stabiliser and LED flash, good sound quality;
CON`s - Crapy CPU, slow GFX, don`t like the UI, no EQ;
SGS - PRO`s - Great screen (super amoled), very fast CPU and GFX, nice UI, perfect response from the touch screen (no touch problems like on Desire), [email protected] video rec, great sound quality with EQ, great video performance (plays mkv 720p files without problems);
CON`s - Battery, fingerprint nightmare, the display uses allot of power compared to Desire`s AMOLED, GPS problems (fixed with new version of FW), design and menu resembles the iphone too much for my taste;
Hope it helps.
The Desire and X10 shouldn't really have significantly lower CPU power than the Galaxy S - they both have 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragons. The 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird (somehow) benches a little higher. The Snapdragon GPU is not particularly good, though, whereas the Hummingbird has the best on any mobile phone as far as I know.
Considering how Qualcomm built their own ARM Cortex A8 core which does more instructions per second than the reference design that the Hummingbird is based off, I don't quite understand why the Hummingbird is faster.
Desire is better for everyday use, for games and multimedia consider galaxy s...

Galaxy s vs desire vs x10 Poll
i wana purchase 1 of these phones . which you guys think is better and why?
X10, really? Just cross that one off the list. I'm fine with a lot of phones replacing it, X10 is just not even close to the league of whichever comes in second.
My buddy has the desire now he wishes he had the Samsung S
As the title says: what hardware feature would you most want to change or improve in a Galaxy S 2? Vote above, but only 1 selection allowed, as being the enthusiasts we are we'd tick almost everything.
Note that we're assuming GPS/lag wouldn't exist here, and this is purely for hardware. Let's just say it's running stock 3.0 Gingerbread.
And hey, if someone at Samsung happens to glance at this...all the better!
Wifi reception
Not so much a feature, but I'd request that they outsource their software development to another company.
Pentile-less samoled (samoled-2?) screen, gyroscope (and apps which supports it), better speaker (not like new htc nonsense slider WP7 phone, but good ol' loud-as-hell speaker).

Haha I fully agree. I believe that the sgs right now is a pretty good device that can maybe be improved by extra core and better file system. Its not hardware that needs changing its the software.

My vote goes to battery. Still waiting for the fuel cells that we where promised where the next big thing in 2006. Or was it 2003. Or was it ...
I want my gadgets to be usable for - days. Or longer
Second vote would be speed. Can never get enough of that either. Never had a laptop thats fast enough, never had a desktop thats fast enough. And now that the gadgetfactor of phones have reached ascension, phone not fast enough.
Gah! Why only one choice?
All of the above, minus hardware keyboard and better camera (as for screen, size is ok, though resolution could be improved). + notification LEDs
With that superme hardware but . .. . Software still like this . . . I would not buy it from ss.
I would say audio -- it's amazing that the recording lag on this thing is about 200ms. Add output lag 100ms to that --> makes multitracker software useless (hence there aren't any). One reason I bought SGS was to record song ideas when they came to mind -- guitar, vocs, drum loop. FALE.
TBH: take Desire HD, slap samsung sticker on it, add Swype. Done.
But yeah, working GPS module and camera flash would be lovely, more RAM could be sweet.
The actual camera is amazing as is, if you go to video mode, the 720p recording is beautiful.
The current rear speaker is quite powerful for its size, clarity is nice too, bigger would be bad, if you really need bigger, get some car audio gear installed in your jacket...
As far as battery life goes, since installing Froyo, battery life seems to have gone up. and there's always the 3200mAh aftermarket bat, but if you have enough time to run a battery flat in a day, you surely have a USB port or powerpoint handy all-day.
I think they came close to spot on with hardware(*cough*flash*cough* ), but if more phones come out with Swype, it could be game-over for Samsung...

They should concerntrate on hardware and let some of the devs here do software, coz there is better expertise and understanding around here.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
They need everything :
1280x720 is probably the next logical step in resolution
4-4.3" display
minimum 1.5 GHz single core or 1 GHz dual core
bare minimum 768 MB of ram, probably even 1GB
either SDXC support or more internal memory
camera flash on all devices
better GPU would be nice, but it's already the fastest so this should not be the priority
make it even slimmer
First of all a good software and better support, and avaiable accesories:
· Dual core 1.5Ghz with better graphics (with real JIT)
· 1 GB ram (REAL)
· 12 MP cam dual (flash-xenon), 1080p video record 60fps continuous autofocus
· Mini HDMI
· 4" to 4.5" SAMOLED 720 resolution
· Extended Battery live (2000mAh)
· 32GB internal memory + 4GB ROM + MicroSD (NO RFS)
· Android 3.0
· Solid construction
· Working GPS
All this in less than 150gr and about 1 cm of thick, 500€, this has much more future that 7" tab!!!!
Coming on summer 2011
BTW if samsung ever wanna buy again its products then have to invest more in Galaxy S support and development.
I should stop saying impossibles for samsung. xD
Id like to see
1. dual gpu/cpu
2. Wifi that works for more than 30 seconds
3. Minimum 1gb ram

For me, with Voodoo the Galaxy S is powerful enough for me. Obviously that'll change next year, but my own preferences would actually be:
1) Build quality - take some tips from HTC, the Desire and Nexus One look and feel great and are very solidly constructed. My old HTC Hero never needed a case.
2) Battery - I've always noticed, it doesn't matter how many apps I have going in the background or live wallpapers, it's the time spent with the screen turned on that sucks all the juice
3) RAM - increase to 768mb / 1gb and maybe we'll get 512 usable! haha
4) Screen - would love it to be upped to 4.3" while still SAMOLED and pushed up to something like 1024 x 600 or just use regular RGB instead of Pentile RGBG
I wouldn't add any hardware, but I'd add to all the available versions of this phone world-wide the same firmware feature that is present in the Korean version , namely the native "record call" function.

Oh yeah, should have had that in the poll: Galaxy S hardware and software identical worldwide other than CDMA or GSM bands, so we don't have to have this divide between the US, Canadian, Korean and European/Oceanic roms.
This is a thread to share our thoughs on how would we like our next G2 device to be.
I would love another htc G1 sequel, I'm really feeling these new metal designs, htc keep it up. Would love a G3 with near the same design as the G2 and similar to the htc surround with an 3.8 screen, these are the 2 htc designs I love the most. Also the trackpad should be kept with the design, an 8 megapixel cam wouldn't sound bad either and the same hinge design, except with a loose one, make this one tight htc LOL. Btw I been hearing they fixed the hinge already in the newer batches this year not that I care but I been hearing that a lot.
So what you guys think?

Yea with the keyboard tho cuz a G3 without a keyboard is not a G3 LOL about the 4.3 I doubt it cuz if its a keyboard phone the screen wouldnt go as big as 4.3 especially htc, cuz imagine how heavy would it be lol and that's the only thing I dislike about the G2

What about a completely metal phone? Absolutely everything, even the keys on the keyboard.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
To be honest. I think the G2 from a design standpoint is one of the best. My imaginary G3 would have:
The same type of aluminum design, but as thin as it can be
A Five-row keyboard (number keys!)
A front-facing camera for video chat
4 inch Super AMOLED 2 display (perfect size, not too big, but definitely not small)
A Dual-Core or Quad-Core processor (we should have Quad-Core phones by next year)
An upgraded rear camera with 1080p recording with a good audio codec (not the crap that comes in all HTC phones now that sounds like a metal in a washing machine)
Stereo Speakers (the iPhone has had it for years)
At least 16GB of internal memory (and of course an external microSD slot)
Thoughts? It sounds impossible, but by the end of next year (which would follow the G-Series' two year cycle), this would be VERY possible.
TBH I dislike super amoled I wish they keep the slcd on the G3 because its sharper than Samoled and proven to be. Only thing better is the blacks which are by far the blackest blacks I've seen on a screen but the colors are way too bright/vivid, reds look like they are bleeding.
Slcd colors are much more natural than Samoled
Samoled blacks are blacks not dark grey like on slcd
Amoled has ok color just a little too deep and unatural like the Samoled but better than Samoled IMO
Take a look at the comparison of the 3 and tell me that's not true

Better camera for low light.
more internal usable memory.
dual core
21mps or even by then 42mbps.
i don't use the track pad at all.
slightly bigger lcd.
maybe 1500 or 1800 battery capacity.( save us money from upgrading)
included sd card higher than class 2.
Who are we kidding its probably going to be another year till we see it.

A five-row keyboard definitely is my own number one with a bullet. The four-row is maddening, given the useless www/com key, and lack of a hard pipe or gt/lt key due to repurposing for the lack of the number row and no way to remap that I've found so far. Using it to SSH into servers for remote maintenance is an exercise in frustration. Actually tempting to swap out for a Nexus S just for that, despite the cheap-plastic feel.
Front-facing camera would be great; a dual or quad core processor as well. Docking station pads and a magnetic sensor would be nice (as from the N1). NFC would be good for futureproofing, though not too useful right now. A better speaker on the back (at least a *bit* less tinny) would be nice... constantly concerned about blowing mine out if my headset drops connection during the middle of a loud music track.
Oh, and a wifi antenna design that doesn't drop 30dB off the SNR when you hold the left side in landscape mode.
I would like the next HTC device to have 8 cores running at 10 zetaherts each, 10 zetabytes of RAM, 10 GTX 485's in SLI, have download speeds up to 4 zbps and have the magical ability to turn into a giant spaceship.

Sent from my CyanogenMod powered G2.
everybody wants it to be faster, bigger (memory), better. But I didn't encounter any slow downs within apps with the g2/desire-z. So faster and bigger isn't one of my priorities. I would like it to be faster, more memory and stuff but the biggest problem I have with the current g2 is the battery life. Everything is fine and adequate but the battery life is terrible. I can not use the phone as much as i would like because of the battery life. When i travel (3 hours round trip) i can not use the phone for the full 3 hours because of this but i would like to. They should build a phone and a battery that can withstand 10 hours of intensive use on one battery cycle. I would like that a lot. or at least double the battery life. Then it would be adequate.
despite of it's faults, i still love my desire-z, I used a lot of different phones, Iphone 3g/4, samsung galaxy s, desire, but i like the desire-z way better..
I want to start a thread with my own review, but im placing it here cause it's more like a thread-starter than actual review.
Usage of smartphones general, and why is Desire Z still extremely useful phone:
1. Hardware keyboard: there are many YT videos showing speed typing on various devices, like iPhone, and Android tablets/phones, but nothing can compare to the actual keyboard. the main advantage, in my opinion is the fact that for a very short time, one can learn to type like using a PC keyboard - without looking. and that feature makes this phone as an actual mobile station for all sorts of stuff that emulate laptop usage. second advantage is clear screen when typing. that is pretty much the reason why I cant imagine to type on a non-hardware phone anymore.
2. material quality - hard casing, and not just compared to other companies, but also compared to the other HTC devices. This phone is like an homage to early indestructible phones that were not intended to be like that (3310, 6210, 7650) Is it weight, is it experiment from HTC (there are 20+ types of plastic for making plastic stuff like casings) or something else, but this phone is the hardest phone I had, and I had Samung Android, iPhones, SE, you name it.
And on top of that, keyboard hinge wont break. I cant find more than 5 forum posts using google where someone complains of broken Keyboard hinge.
And, on top of top of that - "Vision" are the last in HTC production line to have licenced Cornig Gorilla Glass. Sensation XL and phones after that have HTC's substitute glass. (God knows why)
3. Screen - let's start with SLCD - You will find many reviews stating that it's a bad product, cause of the viewing angles. Viewing angles being the MOST retarded property of a screen, marketing vise. WHO watches a screen from an angle, more than 3 seconds, in their life ? So, when we putt aside that property - you have screen (PVA panel) that produces colors maybe even better than IPS. People get easily tricked by Samsung marketing, when they read stuff like: "SUPER AMOLED 2" - like a trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. And it is in fact - regular OLED screen with active matrix, and digitizer stuck onto the screen itself. Oh my, what a wonder. It was, for sure, made so when you break the SGS2/Note screen, you pay arm and a leg for replacement. Buying digitizer and screen at the same time. And the worst part is that AMOLED is nowhere near that good, saturation is awful (my personal opinion), and >4.0 inch phones with AMOLED have bad colors (google "Note screen problem", "SGS2 screen problem"
Resolution of screen - How come that people get so hyped by late Steve, whenever "retina" was mentioned .. ? ~250PPI is better than "retina" (326PPI)!!!
My neighbor is a rich bastard, and he has every single product Apple made, so I had a chance to see that "retina" and it hurt my eyes. Reading non-zoomed web pages on Desire Z is barely possible, doing the same on 4s is NOT possible.
it is not the pixelation of a font that is problem, it is the possibility of reading such small font. Any other aspect for that matter, is just a marketing trick.
250PPI is perfect. I dont care what journalists say about the new iPad, I dont see anything near suggested with the "retina" hype.
4. High-end phone properties - CPU
CPU is similar to the last of the x86 Intel CeleronD single core series - insanely overclockable. and like that, VERY usable. SGS2 exynos (ARM Cortex A9 @ 1.2Ghz) on stock clock has a problem of playing "Ice breaker" game (for some reason this game draws FPS lag on many devices) and on 1.5Ghz OC-ed DesireZ it runs smooth. "Fragger" game slows down extremely on SGS2 when 3 bombs are thrown simultaneously, and that doesnt happen on 1.5Ghz DZ. Dont know about other games on other phones, or Benchmarks for that matter, but this is my personal experience with SGS2 VS DZ (my brother has Samsung). Never really believed Benchmark scores since Intel started to temper with official results back in 2008 (Benchmark software in favor of Intel, compared to AMD)
I am aware of single core/dual core differences, but that is why one can flash DZ with G-slim or G-lite and enjoy the speed.
5. High-end properties - features
apart from resolution that is constantly growing on new devices, name 1 thing that DZ doesnt have ? This is NOT a midrange phone for housewives to share instagram photos, this is a serious device
Flaws -
1. it comes with crappy headphones. I myself soldered Koss Sparkplug earbuds to HTC stock headphones so I could enjoy the sound and still have cable-control buttons.
2. It is heavy. I see how many people could have problem with that but for me it's a good thing, cause I tend to lose phones, but with this one, I know where it is (pocket, jacket, etc..) and it "feels right" when holding it.
conclusion - This phone is Awesome. If I would buy a new, more expensive phone, I would like it to be 4.0 exact design like DZ, stronger CPU and slightly greater resolution. nothing more.
My only real problems with the phone is that it's too thick and heavy at times, it has severe death-grip reception issues with both wifi and mobile reception at my house where i have very little reception. Then, the thing that seems to let it down the most is the limited 512mb of RAM that it has, which makes it difficult to run Sense 3.* ROMs and such. Otherwise, i'm very happy with my phone and i agree with the points that you made . This is the best phone i've ever had!
Actually, my keyboard is slowly deteriorating >.<, a bunch of keys have stopped responding upon soft presses and need to be pressed firmly for any feedback.
Still a mid level phone. Everything i need is with DZ.

I don't see how it's a mid level phone. Maybe performance wise, but it feels quite premium in almost every other aspect.
Wow, that was a kind of a roundhouse kick against all actual hypes.... i like!
I am totally at ur side. The only things i would like to have improved ist cam and ram, and size of screen. But thats kind of wishing, while taking a look at actual state of the art phones...
...at least a HTC ONE S with a HWK sounds nice to me (without AMOLED )
@crestofawave - I believe that he forgot to put "not" word after the "Still" word cause that way it makes sense.
@Superfr34k - Android users are real, compared to Apple, and even they fall under marketing influence. there are many things that do not make sense today, like when you buy a big LCDTV, you see on samsung producsts feat that says:
2 billion colors
standardized results via experiments gave 100.000 colors (human subjects), and biological calculations gave 10 million in the best case. So, this "2 billion" number stands only for Cylons and Terminators. not humans.
high resolution phones make sense, not because of the "retina" and other stuff, but because of only this feat: Wireless Full HD display mirroring. cause I dont see how one can use 1080p on a 5inch device.
all that stuff is the reason why this phone offers 90% of usage, and thats not for an average user, im talkingh about advanced users and their needs.
well
I think that the let down is the wieght, and cpu, it was 1ghz many people say it would be slightly faster which is good enough for me.
I hope they release another HTC Desire Z 2 like motorola releases droid 1 ,2 ,3 etc
If not I might have to get Galaxy S3 which Im not happy about touchscreen only phones nothing beats a qwerty keyboard
This is correct place to put a review since its general and nothing else. Op mentioned to put it here since not an "actual" review...no place else to do it
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Totally agree with everything in this article, and I know a whole lot of others do as well.
Unfortunately, it seems the cell phone market is swinging away from good phones like the G2/Desire Z. I will be keeping this phone until I see a worthy successor w/ hardware keyboard.
In all honesty, this is the best Android powered phone that I've owned, and that includes having previous phones like the Samsung Galaxy S, LG Optimus T and MyTouch 4G. The only complaint that I ever had with this phone is that I wished that the camera was a little sharper, as the full sized 5 MP pictures always seem to come out a little grainy. Usually decreasing the photo size with photoshop or other software solves that problem.
The camera is just a minor complaint, and I honestly don't expect high quality digital camera type quality from a phone camera. It would just be nice to have... that's all Other than that... it was a great phone when I got it, and it continues to be a great one. It runs all the apps I need it to, and I don't have any random crashes or force closes.
@Igoritza All the same.
I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with you. Especially the points you raise about the screens, Samsung with AMOLED, and Apple with Retina. Merely marketing baloney for their mindless fanatics.
I had no idea our desire z's screen were made of gorilla glass, Mayb I should drop it down the stairs to see how it holds up????
Bottomline there isn't many devices like the HTC Vision
The viewing angle on my screen is amazing. I did get a replacement screen a while ago so maybe mine is a newer revision?

I love this phones' keyboard - it is made perfectly.
I have used Galaxy S before, and must say, that modified Desire Z is much faster than modified GS.
What I hate in DZ is its PERFORMANCE. Probably it's android systems natural drawback, that with designed UI like sense it's so slow, laggy and buggy.
Our phone runs smoothly only the AOSP GB what is really annoying.
I'n using Sensewich rom and it makes Desire Z feel like a brand new phone, even CM7 doesn't come close to this. I'm sure that once those changes make their way to other ICS roms and bugs are ironed out most of us will be satisfied with DZ for another year or so.
It's soooo smooth, *drool*
@shadal, I'd have to disagree with you. While our phone is obviously not iPhone smooth, it is a considerably fast device with a bit of overclocking (about 1.0-1.2GHz), on anything but Sense 3.x, maybe MIUI as well. Other than that, just about every other ROM I've flashed has been very fast in general.
Sense really isn't that bad...well, 3.x wasn't the best HTC could offer but 4.0 is VERY promising, tried it and it was so incredibly!!! smooth.
So yeah, AOSP has and will have an edge in performance but it seems like HTC is closing the distance...
i love my dz as well, but thinking about buying a nexus because of the larger screen/amoled. want to read ebooks on the phone. but for the dailystuff, whatsapp/email/calls it´s more than enough. bought a mugenakku and i´m very happy with that combination. the only thing i don´t like is the lcd, it really drains more than amoled. but i think i´m gonna wait with a new phone, but i´m pretty sure a phone with quadcore isn´t needed, i think quadcore is only needed for games, but i rarely play games on my phone.
I have a G2 just to be clear.
I just flash the latest Ice Cream JIBwich 2.0 which is based on the Andromadus Beta 1. They added the newly released GPU drivers from Qualcomm and this thing is fast and smooth now. Gives it new life, way faster than it ever was with GB.
Pretty damn happy with these ICS ROMs.
@tarroyo - please dont drop it down the stairs Gorilla has frontal indestructability (doesnt get pierced by bullets or arrows) but it does not endure side pressure. it will crack
@Shure2 - maybe it's IPS and not SLCD. HTC made a special order to Sony for supplies of SLCD's for making new 3.8 phones, but their initial supplier of 3.8 screens was Hanstar - IPS manufacturer that supplies ASUS and Apple. It is Hanstar company fault that HTC had to find alternative because they blackmailed them. So, yeah, your replacement could very well be from initial batches.
@miscz - I tried Sensewich but I need teh cam the cam itself is not that good, but changig ISO from AUTO to 100 improves "everyday photo shoot", and people's faces quality, or should I say - grainy photos are less grainy and better looking. whoever didnt know about this, should try (less ISO means how much camera is sensitive to light, but it also means shorter shutter speed)
it would be nice if someone knew of an App that lets you alter aperture and shutter, thus improving custom settings and making better pictures with DZ cam.
I've been having great experiences with Andromadus. I regret not having rooted my phone in the first year of owning it, seeing as a simple overclock and new rom has made it so much faster.
The thing I'll miss the most when I switch to a new phone is the lack of a physical keyboard... none of the new flagship phones have physical keyboards, and I'm not convinced that I could type anywhere near as quickly on an on screen keyboard if it's not on a tablet.
@Igoritza: I don't think there will be any thing we can really do to our cameras to catch up to all the latest and greatest phones now =[ No matter how I try, pictures from the iPhone 4S or Galaxy Note are far better. I guess we can come close in extremely well lit environments, but even in conditions which are slightly sub-optimal, our cameras tend to perform worse than theirs.
