[Q] I broke everything... - Fascinate General

So, I can no longer even get to the download screen on my Fascinate.
It won't connect to Odin, or even (long shot, I know) to Kies. I've tried the "remove sd, sim and battery, plug in, hold volume buttons and reinsert battery" technique. All that happens is I get a little "device not connected to PC" icon (there is no text, just a pic of a device, an error triangle, and a PC).
When I try to connect to the PC without powering on (to charge the battery), the loading spinner comes up and the device freezes.
Any ideas? I think I might be screwed, here...

Phone should still be under warranty, as long as you're the original owner on the original account. Take that ***** back.

It would be useful to know exactly what action you think killed it.
The error you describe sounds exactly like you tried to boot after an incomplete or incorrect Odin.
Actually killing download mode for real is extremely rare, so it would be helpful to know how you did it.
Battery is totally optional for download mode.
1. Pull battery (to be sure phone is off). Leave the sd card alone.
2. Plug into pc, while holding down vol - (do not let go ever unless you see a yellow triangle)
3. If nothing happens, press power until you see any screen activity.
Just posting in case it is helpful, chances are download mode got your device to where it is now.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.

Original owner on original account, but rooted the phone and failed flashing the firmware (connection got interrupted mid-flash). Think warranty will still cover it? I'm with Telus in Canada.

Absolutely nothing happened. Phone was off, battery pulled. Left the sim out, didn't touch the SD card. Plugged it in while holding vol - (then repeated this with vol +, vol + and -), tried the power button - absolutely no screen activity. It appears I done killed it but good. D:
Thanks for trying though.

The Fascinate shouldn't have a SIM unless you're on Telus. If you are on Telus, what are you trying to flash with Odin?

Welp, took the phone back into Telus, they replaced it in-store no questions asked. Hooray for good service

Yeah, at the time I didn't realize there was a difference between the two. Ah well, lesson learned.

Yet another reason for splitting the forums. Not sure how many more of these posts will be required before the mods take some action, but hopefully they will see your post and your phone will not have died in vain
Glad you got it exchanged.

For future reference, you can assemble a jig out of a couple of cheap electronic parts that will put any Galaxy S into download mode. Check the i9000 forums.

Another thread of "My G1 won't start"

hello all, i need help again this time.
let's get to the point.
this morning, i tried to charge my G1 because the battery has yellow color.
when i charged the phone, after around 5 minutes, suddenly my G1 restart itself and then after the "G1" logo, the screen go all black, sometimes not all black but there's a little glitch (white-green-purple-all little colors.)
the phone got heated on the bottom part everytime i power-on it, even just on battery (not charged).
i tried "Camera + Power", it's only getting to that red-blue-green-white screen that shows :
"DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT - 0.95.0000
CPLD-4
Radio-2.22.23.02
Sep 2 2008
Serial0"

and it stops there for AGES . won't do anything.
i tried "Home + Power", i tried to hold down that two buttons for 25 second more, but it keeps normal boot, shows G1 logo, and then black screen again.
i tried "Menu + Power", it just the same as "Home + Power"
my G1 has never been rooted, it's all original, i haven't done any system upgrading-downgrading things.
the charger is the original one, original from htc
the battery is new, i've just changed it one month ago.
that's all the informations that i can give.
so, anyone can help me solving this problem?
if its not rooted or anything than that means its HTC's fault not yours. and since you cant access the recovery menu to flash a new rom or recover a nandroid backup, it sounds like you're up ****s creek with a turd for a paddle.... unless somebody has developed a way of flashing without recovery. in other words; get a new phone or send it in to t-mobile.
Get an SD card reader an put a DREIMG.nbh on your sdcard to downgrade to RC29 (push power+camera, select confirm), then wait for the OTA to push you to DMD64. You will loose all your data but at least your phone will work.
Alternatively, after downgrading to RC29 you can exploit the bluetooth bug to gain root access, and after that install CM5.0.8 and be twice as happy with you chunky old G1.

Call+Menu+Power is for a reboot while the phone is on lol. Only other way is "blue light mode" which is trackball and power, but I don't feel like explaining it to you=p.

yes i made two posts. You know that sometimes, some people prefer to go to just specific thread/subforum, ignoring the other thread/subforum.

hey, i'm back.
after days to days downloading DREAIMG.nbh again and again, finally i got the right DREAIMG.nbh, not corrupted one.
and yes, i successfully update, all stuff are signed "OK" , and then i press the action (trackball) button, restart the phone, and guess what? it turns back to the beginning problem, still. "G1" logo, and then turn to whole black screen.
so, now what?
am i bricked?
or is it hardware problem? (remember i said that everytime i turn on the phone, the down part, near sim card, is always getting heated)
the only screen that can be accessed is that rainbow screen and the update screen (Camera + Power).

im pretty sure the heat issue comes from the processor, not the sim card. mine does that too. its nothing to worry about as long as you havent overclocked your device (mine is overclocked and works great aside from gettin warm during heavy usage.) what happens when you plug the phone into usb? does it show the SD card or can you get into the android sdk? its a long shot as i doubt you can get into debug mode without having a uncorrupted os, but i guess its worth a shot.

I had a similar problem as most phones in Canada seem to have Download/Recovery mode disabled, and here is what worked for me.
Grab something like One Click Un Root (all models), and click one click un root (obviously phone has to be on and plugged into the computer).
This should automatically reboot you into Recovery Mode!
All you have to do is "wipe data/factory default" or something like that (should be the third option).
As it states, you will loose all your data, but at least you will have a functionning phone!
did it work?
Hi. I have similar problem. Can anybody give instruction what can I do?
I have this problem too. Please help somebody
Add me to the list. Bell Galaxy S, went to unlock my phone the screen went black. Now it will not boot into the OS, the galaxy S splash screen displays then nothing. The menu and back button light up, thats all. ****[email protected]@
I have not rooted or anything.
Of course my download mode does not work.. Going to try this one click root thing if I can find it.
NOT HAPPY
This is not working. Probably because the phone is not in USB debugging mode as I can't change it... Is there any other way to get the phone into recovery mode?
**** me
i had the same thing happen to me the other day with my bell galaxy s and my phone wont do the 3 button combo trick. i left my phone plugged in to a wall charger for a while until the back of the phone became a little warm. i pulled the battery and then left the power cord plugged in and put the battery back in. i held the volume down and enter button until the battery charging indicator showed up, then i also pressed and held the power button until the boot animation started (this is the blue moving swirl and music, not the galaxy s splash scree) and then i let go of the power button. it took a few attempts at this before it actually worked, but eventually it will go into download mode at which time you can open the odin app, then plug in the usb cable and flash your phone that way. it did seem to make a difference if the back of the phone (around the camera area) was warm. if i let go of the power button while the music was playing and the phone did not enter download mode i would keep all 3 buttons pressed until it shut down again, then i would only let go of the power button while the phone initiated the charging screen, then once the battery logo was displayed i would hold the 3 buttons again and would just keep doing this until it went into download mode. i have flashed it at least 5 times today and i have been able to do this each time.
i also had an issue where odin would not recognize my phone was plugged in and windows would show a message saying the usb device was not recognized. i left the phone plugged in and while in download mode i pressed the volume up, enter button and power button until the phone went blank and when the galaxy s logo showed up i let go of the power button and the phone would go into recovery mode and then the usb drivers would be installed. i would then do the 3 button combo for download mode and odin would work fine. it took several attempts but it does work. i hope this helps you guys
If I hold all three buttons the splash screen does not come on, it just keeps looping the Galaxy S logo until I let go of the power button....

That's what mine did too, several times in a row and then it worked. For some reason it only works after the battery is charging for a bit and the back becomes warm. then it works at will
No luck. I am probably screwed getting it exchanged now too as I am passed the 14 days from Best Buy.
the on click thing doesn't work, if your phone is already bricked.
also it is not the phone's fault for not working, the phone was working properly before you tried the hacks.
whenever you do these kind of things you know you are entering into the "not supported" "not covered by warranty" zone.
in the worse case scenario, if you can no enter download mode to recover your phone, it'll be to take the phone back to bell and claim warranty on it, and prentent you don't know what happened to it.

Its my fault??
I did not hack my phone. Its not rooted, I did nothing to it.
By "unlock" I meant exactly that, unlock as in swiping the screen to unlock it.
The more I search the net the more posts I find of Galaxy S phones randomly bricking...
on the original message sounded more like you went to Unlock the phone, as in SIM unlock the phone using any of the tools available out there, and there has been already several people which had the same problem.
if you go back to Bell for an exchange, you better not use the word "unlock" rather use Swipe
as the message on the phone "swipe the screen to unlock"
there are no known issue about this causing the phone to brick.
if that is what happened to you, you should have started a new topic for people to help you, instead of hijacking the topic from the OP, as your issue is different from OP, the OP actually screwed up because he/she flashed the wrong ROM to the i9000
... anyways, Does it work if you reboot the phone?
I have rebooted the phone about 100 times. The phone crashed when I unlocked it to check a text I received. (not hacked). Has not booted up properly since. I have found many others with the same issue who have also not hacked/rooted/unlocked/ their phones.
Waiting on Best Buy to call me back. I am so pissed right now, I have been bragging to my friends and co-workers how awesome this phone is, one has already picked one up, I hope his doesn't brick too. Not recommending it to anyone anymore..
did you load a lot of MP3 to the phone?
can you boot into Recovery Mode?
in the recovery mode you can wipe the Cache and wipe the data
that should make your phone work normal again
it'll be best to open a topic to help you trouble shoot your interesting issue, as it's the first i've hear that you get a black screen after Swiping out of the lock screen
I can't get into recovery mode. I have tried every button combination I have found. I had about 2 GB of music on the phone. I also installed the Android SDK to try ADB, but since the phone is not in USB debugging mode it does not see it.

on the other topics relating to the 3 button not working.
have you tried the heating up method?
or the plugging the battery in, when all 3 buttons are pressed? (of course for this one you will need help from a friend, unless you are very skilled at keeping the 3 button on hold meanwhile able to slide in the battery in with out a 3rd hand)

First Attempt DOWNLOADER MODE.

So I haven't been on XDA for quite awhile because of time constraints. Working full time and going to college full time leaves you with no time at all to even wipe my *** Anyway, this morning at 4:00 AM Pacific Time I wake to leave to Las Vegas for a wedding. What do I see, a message saying *UPDATE*. So I update it and behold my phone is frozen!!!
I tried so hard not to freak out because this is my GPS, my TuneIn radio and Pandora when there is no radio stations. I hesitated a quick second then remember I still had Odin and the original ROM files.
Only think keeping me from doing this in a flash was DOWNLOADER MODE. God damn phone just would not do it. I tried everything. Then, as if a miracle, I viewed a video online, and with the first attempt got right into download mode, so here it is...
1. Power off Phone.
2. Pull off back cover.
3. Pull out battery.
4. Plug back in battery.
5. Run ODIN.
6. While phone is still off hold down both volume buttons.
7. While phone is still off and you are still holding down the volume buttons insert the micro usb cord into the phone.
And BAM! Right into download mode.
Let me know if this works out for you.
Jzero88
didn't run ODIN but sure enough, right into download mode!
thanks for the awesome tip

Yes its been confirmed and is now in the bible directory .
Me too. That's why I can't update my phone through odin. The ota hasn't come yet.

Any way to save my phone?

I was running Fusion 1.1 recently, and when the Core v1 kernel was released, I flashed the 1.2ghz version, but experienced freezes.
I figured my phone couldnt handle the OC, so I flashed the 1ghz version, my phone started freezing worse. I tried rebooting and it froze during the Galaxy S boot animation.
I then adb'd into recovery and tried flashing Fusion 1.1 again, but my phone froze during the flash and now it wont boot past the Vibrant screen. When plugged into the computer, it only boots up enough the show the battery charge screen, but freezes before it even displays a battery level.
ADB doesnt seem to recognize any connected devices.
Maybe Im getting the hardware button combos wrong, as far as I know, a device that wasnt previously hardware locked cant become locked, right? I know for a fact mine wasnt locked before.
If someone could post the exact hardware button combos, cause Ive seen conflicting posts on this. Or any help for that matter, Im desperate.
try turning the phone off, holding volume up and volume down, while holding those two plug the usb cable in.
see if that gets you into download mode.

Nope, just pops up the battery screen and freezes.
A question about hardware locked phones, the combo Im using to get into recovery is, hold down vol up + vol down + power, and when the Vibrant screen disappears, release the power button, but keep holding the volume buttons.
However when I do this, the Vibrant screen just pops up a second time, which wont happen unless Im holding the power button. If I am to take "hardware-locked" literally, then the power button wouldnt even do that, right?

I just get stuck on the Vibrant screen.
Unless your Vibrant is actually hardware locked, this method should get you into download mode. I have always entered download mode using this method.
1- Power off your phone.
2- Make sure you have the correct drivers installed on your PC for the phone. (I assume you do if you were using ADB).
3- Open Odin on your PC. (I recommend using Odin3 v1.3 or higher, v1.0 has issues)
4- Remove the battery from your Vibrant.
5- Plug the USB cable into your computer.
6- Plug the USB cable into your Vibrant.
7- With one hand (holding the Vibrant on it's side) hold down the Volume up, Volume down, and power buttons all at the same time.
8- While watching the screen, and holding all 3 buttons, place the battery back in the vibrant.
9- Once the battery has been inserted you will likely see one of two things, the "swirly" thinking icon (most common) or the battery icon will pop up. Keep holding the buttons until the initial icon disappears and you see a full black screen is shown.
10- As soon as you see that black screen, release ONLY the power button, continue to hold the volume keys and if done correctly, the Vibrant will go into download mode.
11- Verify Odin sees the device. There will be a box that turns yellow with a Com port shown
12- Load up the .pit & .tar files for the stock rom and flash away. (May have to use re-partition, not sure though)
Hope this helps/works! Good Luck!

This kernel nearly bricked me much like the problem you're experiencing. It does seem like you may be hardware locked...it locked me out of recovery with the use of 3 hardware buttons, but luckily Odin came through.
You do have the samsung drivers installed on your computer correct? This might be the reason why you can't get into download mode. I also noticed that even though I got into download mode it did not immediately show the COM notification showing I was connected...I hit start anyway and it immediately started flashing the other kernel I used to recover (JAC OC/UV 1.0). There is something seriously wrong with this kernel on certain Vibrants and I don't think I'll be flashing it again, even after updates.

I would definitely have to agree with you there, it froze during a flash with me, which is anything but safe.
Either way, I went out and bought the correct resistors, but I've never done any soldering so I got the micro usb breakout board since its a little easier. I suppose that will come in a week and then Ill have to put it all together and see if the homemade jig works. Wish me luck!

Did your phone get hot? One must be careful when flashing oc kernel. It is quite possible to ruin your phone if the temperature gets out of control...

Good luck man. I too had Fusion 1.1, flashed Core 1.2 which caused freezes, I flashed back to stock and when attempting to reload Fusion I messed up the USB and it bricked, and I was hardware locked. I made the "Jig" and it worked fine after a couple tries plugging it in, got to download and flashed back to stock without any problems.

Strange, I release after the second Vibrant screen.
OP: it certainly sounds like you're hardware locked. And no, I don't think it means you can't navigate recovery, it means the buttons don't work when trying to get into recovery in the first place (I was hardware locked and couldn't enter recovery/download without adb; I used the flashable fix to remove the hardware lock).

[Q] Nexus 4 Damage Help

So first some back-story, I'll get right into it. I recently dropped my phone in some water. As soon as possible I dried off the outside, and let it sit. That was the only thing I could do at the time, I had no rice, no tools to open up the phone, anything. I ended up with a solid red light, and everything unresponsive.
The next day I got some tools to open her up. There was pretty extensive corrosion to the motherboard, so using some alcohol I cleaned it all off, rinsed it, and let it dry. I also took apart everything else and cleaned any corrosion. The inside looks brand new. However, this isn't the point of the thread.
It appeared my cleaning helped quite a bit. Upon re-assembling and plugging in, I immediately got a charging sign on the phone. However, after trying to power on, I got no response. Additionally, The charging signal went out after about 20 seconds, and the whole phone became unresponsive again. I can do this process as many times as I want, but the same thing happens every time.
So I tried a different approach. First I hold down both volume rockers plus the power button, and plug it in while holding them down. This puts the phone into "download mode" However, once in download mode the phone is, again, unresponsive. After plugging into my laptop, my computer recognizes the phone, but not as "Nexus 4," but as "Full JellyBean on Mako."
Is there anything I can do about this? I've heard about drivers being able to be installed when in download mode, but I would not know what these are, where to get them, or how to install them. I really don't mind if my phone never works 100% again, I doubt it would. I just want to be able to get into the storage so I can recover some of the files I lost.
It's also probably worth mentioning I have not gotten a solid red light after the clean. Once in a while I will get a blinking red light after plugging it in, but after less than a minute it stops and goes through the charging/stop charging phase I'm so familiar with. Any help at all would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.
The charging block and/or battery could be wrecked, for safety reasons and because it will probably become faulty soon you should change the battery anyway. If the charging block is broken flashing your phone could fail. It's also possible the board was irreparably damaged, but it's probably worth a try as the parts aren't too expensive.

After trying to figure more things out, I kept it plugged in for a while. It appears my battery actually holds at least a pretty good charge, as the indicator is full when I plug it in now. However, I don't know what you mean when you say charging block.
Also, I seemed to determine my power button isn't working either. I always thought no response to pushing it meant there was something else going on, but I am able to put it into "download mode" by just holding down the volume rockers and plugging it in. Is there a way to turn on the phone another way besides the power button? Also if not, will buying another power button fix the problem? I don't want to buy one then later figure out the reason it wasn't turning on was just a board problem, and not a problem with the button itself.
You can short the power button with a screwdriver or something should turn the phone on., By charging block I mean the secondary board that the micro usb port is a part of, it can be replaced fairly easily if necessary.

With a screwdriver? Enlighten me, I'd have no idea how to do that. If I had a faulty charging block, then my phone wouldn't be able to charge correct? My phone was plugged in for a while in download mode, and it gained a full charge from a relatively low charge. I also took the block apart and cleaned any corrosion, so I think that's still functional.
Some more progress, upon further attempting to turn the phone on, I was able to get it into fastboot mode. When plugging into the computer it is recognized, but as just "Android." I will type out what information is displayed here, minus serial number, as a new member cannot submit links in posts apparently.
FASTBOOT MODE
PRODUCT_NAME - mako
VARIENT - mako 8GB
HW VERSION - rev_11
BOOTLOADER VERSION - MAK0230d
BASEBAND VERSION - M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1700.98
CARRIER INFO - None
SERIAL NUMBER -
SIGNING - production
SECURE BOOT - enabled
LOCK STATE - locked
Also, fastboot at the top (as far as I know) usually says "Start" or "Recovery Mode," but mine says "Restart bootloader." When I try switching with my volume buttons, nothing happens.
Another update, just in case anyone is still listening..

This no longer applies, for some reason I am able to switch through all modes, incliding "Start, Power Off, Recovery Mode, and Restart bootloader."

Now that you're at this point, have you attempted to flash the phone with a stock image? I'd be weary of what the other poster said though and ensure your USB connection is holding steady because you don't want it dying half way through a flash because then you'll have a brick.

I have tried actually. I used the Nexus Root Toolkit v1.8.0 to try and flash it. At first it wouldn't find the device, but through device manager I manually installed the usb_driver onto the phone. After this, the toolkit was able to find the phone. I attempted to flash the image, but it ended up staying in fastboot mode. The program then suggested I try to enable "force flash," which I did, and this time it was never able to finish because the phone tried to restart, but went through that "charging to unresponsive" state I described in my first post.
Upon trying to flash it normally again, it looks like maybe the phone has to be unlocked to do this properly? I then tried to unlock with the same program, but in order to do that, I need the power button to confirm I actually want to unlock the phone. So yet again, I need that power button working.
Any ideas/suggestions/solutions would be amazing.
Jellybean on mako means that your phone is in lgnpst/qcpnst mode. Looks like something failed to start and made the bootloader trogger that mode

Problem is the power button doesn't work, and the flashing fails. It looks like the flashing fails because the phone isn't unlocked. To unlock, I need the power button. Kinda stuck.
