[Q] 3G signals disappear when accessing location - Nexus S General

Hello,
I bought a Nexus S and use it in France. I get a 3G signal, but whenever an app tries to access the localization info, the 3G signals disappear and my phone gets disconnected from the internet.
I tried with Maps, Foursquare : each time the app requests localization, 3G goes away.
When WiFi is enabled and if I'm connected to a network : no problem.
Could this is because I did not configure well the Orange (FR) APN ? I don't think so since this is pretty well documented.
Thank you

HSDPA Keeps Turning Itself Back On

In the Comm Manager, I try to switch Data Connection (HSDPA for me on Orange UK) off, but it keeps coming on.
I don't want it on!
Is there a better way to keep it switched off until I request it to be re-enabled?
Should only come on when an app requests data access. Have you got something running in the background? Quickgps perhaps?
i can't turn mine off via the Comm Manager unless i put the phone in GSM only. fyi, the HD 3G bands don't work in the US.
Windows Live Messenger is running in the background but that should be sorted by the WiFi which is on.
I go into the Proxy Settings for Orange Internet and untick the box that says that "this connects to the internet". But then it automatically ticks itself again and connects!
Perhaps it's an Orange problem?
Don't think so - I'm on Orange too and it doesn't happen. Anyway, it's the phone's choice to connect to HSDPA, it has to actively make the connection.
My best guess is your phone is losing connection with your wifi for short periods, and thus resorting to the backup hsdpa.
I think I've found a solution:

Aren't you confusing 2 icons ?
The big plain H only means that SSDPA is available on the network. This doesn't mean you arer *using* HSDPA at this time.
The icon to look at is the one just on the right of the big H. When you are using HSDPA, it shows a little H with 2 arrows below. If it shows an antenna with the signal level bar below, you are not using HSDPA, but only GSM.
At least it's the way it works on mine. As soon as I need data transmission (like for weather forecast), it uses HSDPA since it is available. Otherwise, it uses GSM. Therefore,
mine turns itself on when i recieve a mms....could you be recieving one?
Close all applications using it!
Sometimes I forget to close Opera after using it, and it happens to me too!

Automatically select preferred network when switching from Wifi to 3G

Hi all,
I have searched for the answer but only succeede in getting confused.
would someone kindly point me in the right direction...
when i turn on WIFI and connect to my router, i then have to go START>settings>connection>connection>advanced>select networks...etc to get my apps (opera etc) to use the wifi connection.
then when i switch wifi off i have to do it all again and select orange internet.
surely there is a simple app available that when i tap wifi it does this for me and when i switch it off again it connects back to 3g.
my kaiser was the same, i had hoped my blackstone may have done it...grr
PLEASE HELP
regards

I used to have this - Opera would only prefer wifi once restarted, so if you connected via 3g, then went into a wifi area and connected, it would continue to use 3G.
Anyway, not an issue with the latest Dutty roms, they always use the wifi if it's connected (easy to check with whatismyip.org - connect 3g, load the page, connect wifi, refresh).

Hi, thanks for replying so quick..
yeah i had noticed that i always have to restart Opera...its all the other web based apps that i have to do this for as well (like google maps)
i don't mind having to re-start an app, its just a pain having to do the START>settings>connection>connection>advanced>select networks bit every time i turn wifi on and off.
my friend has an (dare i mention it) iPhone and he simply switches wifi on and ALL his apps connect through wifi. then when he switches wifi off ALL his apps default back to his 3G connection with no other fiddly settings at all!!!
(i really want to hate the iPhone but there are some things you can't deny it does very well. lol)
as for Roms...only had the phone 1 week and whilst i have no technical difficulty in performing this i would prefer to find an app based solution...
i remember reading a review of the blackstone and this very problem was mentioned (its a windows mobile issue not necessarily the phone) and they stated that there was a simple third party app that gets aroung this for 'one button wifi/3g switching) however they did not mention what the software was and have not responded to posting on that site/thread.
Just upgraded to the new HTC rom (official) and i no longer have the problem...turning on Wifi means it is used, turning off wifi means 3G is used.
no more fiddly START>settings>connection>connection>advanced>select networks etc having to swap between wifi and orange every time HOORAH.
+ the rom isn't poluted with a pile of Orange rubbish!!!

I still have the problem with my email.
Opera works correctly though.

Drops 3G connection to connect to internet

I have an orange HD unlocked phone that I am using on Vodafone UK.
Even with a good 3G signal the phone will close the 3G connection for any kind of data transfers.
If I am sent an MMS while in 3G coverage I am prompted that it needs to drop the connection and make a new one to be able to recieve the message.
Any idea's whats wrong.
I have used the Touch Pro settings as Vodafone do not have specific settings for this phone.
mine does that too it's because the phone company use a different apn for internet and mms
so basically I may live in a 3G area but I can never use it.
same problem here, its actually verry annoying because my while using wifi, and browsing inet i dont receave any sms or mms or call, for everyone my phone is like offline, then sometimes wifi drps and im starting to receave all sms togeter and in the same time wifi turns off and browser starts using gprs instead wifi even if wifi is reconnected, and then im starting to pay for my proveder... sux.

Switching from wifi to 3G

Now, I can't tell if that started to happen after the famous update but as far as I can remember everything was fine before.
I used to have both wifi and 3G on and they wre swiching on and off according to availability. Now I find that several times, while I am in a known wifi location, the 3G connection is used instead. I use WiFi manager to monitor my connections and I see that the status is "connecting...". If I disable and re-enable wifi, it connects correctly.
The same happens the other way round. Which is, when a wifi connection is not available, the 3G connection doesn't start. I have to disable and enable 3G from the widget in order to return to operation.
Is there any solution?
I#ve got no solution, but had the same problem. I managed to work around in using KeepWifi

Problem with Mobile Internet Connection

Hey forum,
i go away from home and i have no more wifi connection.
Then i suddenly get a connection to mobile internet (EPlus) first.
As i am in an area without a connection and i come back to EPlus, i can use my phone for telephone and SMS but i get no internet connection automatically.
I must use the airplane-mode to totally logoff and 5 sec later go out of airplane-mode. In this way i get the internet connection back.
My wife has the same problem with Incredible S and GingerSense 1.3.
Is this maybe a problem of EPlus? Or is there anyone with tve same problem and another provider?
Andreas
Perhaps it's your wifi giviing you problems, going bad.
Sent from a dream.
If the signal of your provider (in this case Eplus) is weak, it might not find it right away.
Also, try going into Settings>Wireless settings then under Network mode, check if it says GSM/WCDMA
This setting will try to connect to 2G or 3G whichever has the strongest signal, however if both are available, 3G will be selected.
