Benefits of Partitioning my SD card - EVO 4G General

I am running cyanogen 6.1.1. I just added a partition to my sd card and am wondering why I did it. aside from a slight performance increase, I think it did nothing else. are there benefits that I am unaware of, or did I waste my time doing this?

I'm not 100% certain about this, but I believe since froyo, apps2sd was done using the single FAT partition it comes with. The swap partition is good for Linux devices which Android is, but unless you're doing heavy multi tasking, and I mean heavy, it's not going to help. I suppose it helps if you have themes and widgets that take a fair amount of memory. In conclusion, you likely wasted your time.

[Q] Dual Boot Android 2.1 and 2.2?

Is this possible with android to dual boot a OS off the sd card instead of wiping and restoring everytime I would like to stitch
I know this is possible in winmo
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
i've never seen any information alluding to this. really, with nandroid backups it isn't that big of a hassle.
Compared to using a tool like haret to shutdown the os and reboot the system into another os without wiping the device first is a big difference for me. I was just curious though not really a big deal

Agreed...it only takes 3 minutes to wipe and restore although I don't switch that often. Ideally you find one you like the best and use that most.

What's a ROM?

They just seem like a mushup of things the developer did...like, say, using the mixup kernal and releasing a ROM where everything is stock except there's no drm...wouldn't I accomplish the same thing by pulling and pushing and flashing things?
I'm not getting at anyone here, I'm just curious is all

These aren't actual roms, they are more correctly should be called distros. The devs are more really just modders. I guess the incorrect nomenclature just got stuck.

In some instances we can actually improve the system rather than just adding to it. For instance, every application in my ROM has had every PNG texture losslessly optimized which results in about a 25% reduction in overall size. Reduction in size results in better memory conservation and in theory a faster phone overall.
That's just one example.

High Ram usage is great. It means a lot of stuff is being cached and ready to execute in an instant when you want to.
What's the point of having a 2GB phone while only using a fraction of it...
So why not ??

Please unlearn those misconceptions about Android RAM usage.
Unused RAM is wasted RAM.
Android, like Mac OS and Ubuntu, wants to use all the RAM it can, because that's how it was designed to work. There are settings (in Android we call them "minfree" settings) to tell the system how much RAM to leave free and available, but the rest is designed to fill up as fast as possible and stay that way.
You're probably thinking "What's it filling up with?" That's a great question. After the system, graphics, radios, and any other tweaks to RAM are done loading, the rest is there to load apps into memory, right up to the point where the OS says to stop. Load the app as it's being used, and keep it there for the next time until it needs flushed to free space for something else. The more you use the system, the better it gets at keeping the right things loaded and ready to go. Think about how you use your phone -- you might have 100 apps installed, but there are a few you always are opening and using. Eventually, most of those apps will be stored in your RAM, simply because you're always opening them and loading them into the RAM if they weren't already there -- and "erasing" other apps that were there first. Loading an app from your storage takes longer, is harder on the battery, and overall worse than loading it from it's cached position in RAM.

OK... within a specific context we are both correct.
So let me make my context more clear.
Unused ram is wasted RAM... if that is the wording most accurate.
If the RAM of your device has most of your favorite apps in background running or cached... its better for the system... rather than constantly loading it fresh from NAND and pulling last computed data from cache.
Lag can kick in when an app that is currently running (such as top line games) needs more space and it has to wait on the os memory manager to clear out background apps that haven't been used for a while... ugghh
Recently for early GS4 ROMS with the camera crash issue, when RAM falls below 200-Megs... the memory manager is too slow to free up enough "used" RAM for the Camera app causing a very slow and laggy camera or worse reboot of the device.
One work around is to use developer mode and limit the number of processes to 4... thus a minimum amount of "free and unused" ram was assured and the camera would not load slowly or reboot the device when loading,
It seems like this whole unused ram issue will always be with android until we get phones with 4Gigs of RAM... yeah righ;pt

TRIM on Nexus S, yay or nay?

I suppose everyone heard about fstrim utility from unix OS-es being incorporated in Android 4.3. Appearantly, it optimises how operating system is using flash memory and that reduces lagg that is being accumulated over time of usage.
My question is, has anyone tried LagFix app from Play Store? Does it help for our device?

/system and /data works, /cache doesn't.
I think it does help performance a bit.

Don't expect miracles from it, but it indeed helps a bit.
I'm running the same build of CM-10-20121220 for some time now, trying new ROM's but I always go back to this from recovery after few days. I don't know is it placebo or what but phone indeed seems little snappier than before.
Thanks

best thing to do is clear all recent apps by pressing home key and clearing each one away to free ram.no apps needed as thay will use ram them selfs.I do this and i dont get lag.

Galaxy S6 RAM Issues May Be Intentional

While Samsung’s TouchWiz interface has by no means been among the top skins to be implemented by manufacturers, the Korean company has never given up on improving the custom Android interface. Most of the criticism revolves around the effects TouchWiz can have on the fluidity of a device’s interface, as well as the overall appearance the company imposes on their users. With the latest Galaxy S6 smartphones, Samsung has shipped a newer version of the TouchWiz interface, which Samsung claims is both lighter in system resource consumption, as well as a more refined experience.

TouchWiz is themeable, and if you still aren't happy, you can buy something else--Samsung isn't holding a gun to your head. Besides, it's irrelevant to the supposed topic of the article and only serves to set a negative tone. This is little more than a biased and poorly executed opinion piece.

I dont care about memory leak, i just want rom which can handle over 20 apps in multitasking screen which wont reload in couple of secs.
[QUOTE=Isus memory IS RAM lmao.. thats precisely what the mem leak fix is.. it fixes the multitasking and allows it to stay in the background longer than stock which kills it very aggressively out of the box..
you should read up on it because you clearly dont know what your talking about.

You clearly dont know what you're talking about, I had memory leak issues on Nexus 5 but I still could have over 15 apps in recent tabs without reloading unless ram usage is over 95%... On S6 even after restart, when ram usage is 60% I cannot have more than 3 apps in recent tabs.. Explain me now, how can memory managment and memory leak be the same? smartass ..
P.S (memory IS RAM lmao) memory doesnt clearly mean RAM, there is memory in GPU, drives, sd cards, etc.
[QUOTE=Isus
the mods used for memory leak is specifically in regards to ram management which you modify the android system to run more apps in memory at a time without the system forcing them to restart.. this is available as well as included in many roms already..
RAM = Random Access Memory which is obviously the memory i was referring to.. if i was referring to any other memory i would have indicated so but assumed it was safe to simply say "memory" and you would know what memory i was talking about since the main topic is RAM memory.
Im not trying to argue, you made a post i said there is a fix for it already because there is. You can not believe me all you want, i could care less lol.

because ROM does not control memory management its more like Kernel related stuff

Memory leak is different than ram management.
Memory leak is pre-5.1.1 where the phone gets slow over a longer period of time but a reboot fixes it. The colour fade fix is one of the memory leak fixes.
Memory management is the multitasking issue we are having where apps don't stay alive while multitasking!
