High Ram usage is great. It means a lot of stuff is being cached and ready to execute in an instant when you want to.
What's the point of having a 2GB phone while only using a fraction of it...
So why not ??

Please unlearn those misconceptions about Android RAM usage.
Unused RAM is wasted RAM.
Android, like Mac OS and Ubuntu, wants to use all the RAM it can, because that's how it was designed to work. There are settings (in Android we call them "minfree" settings) to tell the system how much RAM to leave free and available, but the rest is designed to fill up as fast as possible and stay that way.
You're probably thinking "What's it filling up with?" That's a great question. After the system, graphics, radios, and any other tweaks to RAM are done loading, the rest is there to load apps into memory, right up to the point where the OS says to stop. Load the app as it's being used, and keep it there for the next time until it needs flushed to free space for something else. The more you use the system, the better it gets at keeping the right things loaded and ready to go. Think about how you use your phone -- you might have 100 apps installed, but there are a few you always are opening and using. Eventually, most of those apps will be stored in your RAM, simply because you're always opening them and loading them into the RAM if they weren't already there -- and "erasing" other apps that were there first. Loading an app from your storage takes longer, is harder on the battery, and overall worse than loading it from it's cached position in RAM.

OK... within a specific context we are both correct.
So let me make my context more clear.
Unused ram is wasted RAM... if that is the wording most accurate.
If the RAM of your device has most of your favorite apps in background running or cached... its better for the system... rather than constantly loading it fresh from NAND and pulling last computed data from cache.
Lag can kick in when an app that is currently running (such as top line games) needs more space and it has to wait on the os memory manager to clear out background apps that haven't been used for a while... ugghh
Recently for early GS4 ROMS with the camera crash issue, when RAM falls below 200-Megs... the memory manager is too slow to free up enough "used" RAM for the Camera app causing a very slow and laggy camera or worse reboot of the device.
One work around is to use developer mode and limit the number of processes to 4... thus a minimum amount of "free and unused" ram was assured and the camera would not load slowly or reboot the device when loading,
It seems like this whole unused ram issue will always be with android until we get phones with 4Gigs of RAM... yeah righ;pt

Why the RAM on Android is only 400+M?

Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Some of the ram is used by the GPU, some is used to run the OS, and I think the radio takes some too. After the GPU and radio take their share, you end up with like 411 mb.
Then Android itsself needs some to run, and then there's your launcher and any apps you have installed. Basically what you see is what you get.
The good news is, Android manages memory differently than WinMobile. Android apps are kept in RAM to aid in fast loading, resulting in less free RAM, but an overall faster, smoother experience. I say judge not by the amount of unused memory, but by how smooth the experience. I would stay away from task killers, except for System Panel and AutoKiller Memory Optimiser. Just find the level in Autokiller that works best for you, and if you're about to use a memory hungry app, end all apps with System Panel's End All widget.

I suppose it is possible only with swap? Or with absolutely fresh installation of ROM with almost no applications?
Most of the time I have between 30-45 MB free RAM and I do not use swap and have a lot of applications, few widgets...

That 200mb is "virtual ram"...it means your phone uses that allocated 200mb to increase the amount of ram your phone can have...but be warned, increasing the SWAP size will shorten your SD Card's lifespan...200mb should be ok...don't go overboard like I did and put 1000mb(1GB) ....but if you already enabled compache in CyanogemMod Settings/Performance, then using SWAP is pointless

Home screen reloading issue?

Hi everyone. Home screen reloads/ restarts are a common issue on the international sgs3. Anyone here experiencing the same problem under heavy usage?
Not a thing after 2 days. Been trying games, apps and the whole nine yards most of the time without any reloads or restarts for almost anything.
Amazing, coming from an Atrix.

Hey OP this will NOT be an issue. This thing has 2GB of RAM...even with a ton of apps running I always have at least 800-900MB of RAM free at all times. Android will never have to restart the launcher so you'll never get homescreen redraws. The issue you're seeing is because of the less RAM and the TW launcher having to be killed in memory to free up memory and then reloaded.

Not true, the same issue happens on Sense phones like HOX because of available memory. Android will dump TW or Sense from RAM if it runs out of available memory so the app you are currently using can function fine. Then when you finish with that app, the launcher has to be reloaded to memory which is the refreshing you see.
It's a known/documented issue. More RAM solves the problem because the launcher (along with many other apps) remain in memory always since there's plenty of free memory for other apps.
This is triple confirmed from my experience using a Galaxy Nexus, HOX and now a US GS3. Even if I use Nova Launcher on all 3 if I really push them the GN and HOX will refresh Nova once in a while while the GS3 will never do that.

At a technical level in all computer systems (mobile or desktop, etc.) MORE RAM = LESS PAGING.

You are wrong. It has EVERYTHING to do with RAM. Hence the NA versions of this phone will not see the problem.
This is with tons of apps and services running. I've been watching it, it rarely drops lower than 800MB.

As of yet, even while running probably 10+ apps at once, I have yet to have had any have to reload anything when coming back to them even after a few hours.
It has to do with RAM and the memkill settings the company used on the device. The OneX has ridiculously aggressive settings, for example.
More ram just masks the real problem, poorly written software. 1gb should be more than enough on phones. If WIN7 can run on 1gb, a phone should have no issues. 2gb is just a marketing tool atm. One X is rarely using over 500mb ram on my device.

What you say may be true. The problem is definitely due to partly poor memory management by software. For example on my international SGS3 when I have about 150mb left and i open a memory heavy app it chose to kill off my home launcher or my browser (2 frequently accessed apps) instead of a bunch of inactive cached apps. ICS/ Touchwiz seems very agressive in auto caching unwanted apps but very reluctant to free up memory by quiting those cached apps.
Now we don't know if this is Samsungs fault or google ICS fault but several phones on ICS all have this regressed memory management issue from gingerbread. There is not much that can be done to improve the situation. So it looks like a 2GB phone is the best bet at the moment if you want proper multitasking experience on ICS.

[Q] S4 RAM Question

Just have a quick question iv'e heard that on the s4 that touchwiz takes up a lot of ram from the 2gb available does that mean if i install another ROM will give me more ram to work with ?
Yes ,but Android is not Windows. Free RAM is wasted RAM. Without touchwiz and the Samsung bloat give you more space on infernal SD. If Android need RAM so the low mem killer kicks in and clean unused apps.

Galaxy S6 RAM Issues May Be Intentional

While Samsung’s TouchWiz interface has by no means been among the top skins to be implemented by manufacturers, the Korean company has never given up on improving the custom Android interface. Most of the criticism revolves around the effects TouchWiz can have on the fluidity of a device’s interface, as well as the overall appearance the company imposes on their users. With the latest Galaxy S6 smartphones, Samsung has shipped a newer version of the TouchWiz interface, which Samsung claims is both lighter in system resource consumption, as well as a more refined experience.

TouchWiz is themeable, and if you still aren't happy, you can buy something else--Samsung isn't holding a gun to your head. Besides, it's irrelevant to the supposed topic of the article and only serves to set a negative tone. This is little more than a biased and poorly executed opinion piece.

You clearly dont know what you're talking about, I had memory leak issues on Nexus 5 but I still could have over 15 apps in recent tabs without reloading unless ram usage is over 95%... On S6 even after restart, when ram usage is 60% I cannot have more than 3 apps in recent tabs.. Explain me now, how can memory managment and memory leak be the same? smartass ..
P.S (memory IS RAM lmao) memory doesnt clearly mean RAM, there is memory in GPU, drives, sd cards, etc.
[QUOTE=Isus
the mods used for memory leak is specifically in regards to ram management which you modify the android system to run more apps in memory at a time without the system forcing them to restart.. this is available as well as included in many roms already..
RAM = Random Access Memory which is obviously the memory i was referring to.. if i was referring to any other memory i would have indicated so but assumed it was safe to simply say "memory" and you would know what memory i was talking about since the main topic is RAM memory.
Im not trying to argue, you made a post i said there is a fix for it already because there is. You can not believe me all you want, i could care less lol.
