I am not trying to put words in Tmo's mouth, but I did a live chat earlier today about not being able to boot into recovery mode since this does affect my phone.
She claims twice in the chat that issue should be fixed with the update.
Here is a copy of the chat I had.
You have been connected to Tmo Agent.
Tmo Agent: Hi * , welcome to T-Mobile live Chat. I’m * and I will be happy to assist you. Please give me a moment to review your question.
Me: Ok thank you.
Tmo Agent: Please allow me a few moments to review the information provided.
Tmo Agent: I do see that today you are inquiring about a phone problem, is that correct?
Me: Yes. It is a Samsung Vibrant. I have a few issues with it.
Tmo Agent: I can understand why that would be important to you to have your phone working properly, I want to get this figured out.
Tmo Agent: *, what exactly do you mean by "I can't boot into recovery mode"?
Me: To do a factory reset there is a button combination that you are supposed to do while the phone is booting to allow you to wipe the phone and reset everything the way it was when it was new.
Tmo Agent: Thank you.
Tmo Agent: Have you tried to do a reset through the regular menu?
Me: Yes, but my concern was if I needed to do a reset when I cannot access the regular menu if the phone gets messed up somehow. I know there is supposed to be an update coming out for this phone and if something goes wrong during the update I would like to have a way to get my phone running again.
Tmo Agent: I completely understand, the update that should be released soon should resolve most of these issues for you.
Tmo Agent: The Vibrant automatically updates its software using over-the-air (OTA) updates. You cannot perform a software update manually. When new software is available, the device displays a prompt asking you to update the system.
Me: I understand that it should resolve the GPS and compass, but will it also allow me to boot to recovery?
Tmo Agent: Please allow me a moment to look into this further for you.
Me: Thank you.
Tmo Agent: *, it does appear that this is one of the issues the new update should resolve. I am sorry, I do not have a release date for the software as of yet, but you can always watch the forums for information at t-mobile.com/support.
Me: Ok thank you for the help.
Tmo Agent: Is there anything else we can assist you with today?
Me: One more question. I did read somewhere that if the phone doesn't boot into recovery that T-Mobile was considering it a defect and will replace the phone with one that will work correctly.
Tmo Agent: If the new software that is supposed to resolve this issue does not, at that point we may look into replacing it under the manufacturer warranty once all troubleshooting on the device has been exhausted.
Tmo Agent: Are there any other questions?
Me: That is all I needed to know. I wanted to be sure that if something did happen to my phone during the update that I would be covered and not left with a $500 paper weight. Thank you for your time.
Tmo Agent: Thank you for contacting T-Mobile Chat, have a great day!
"hardware" locked... there is no such thing as a "software" update for this... and fyi, if your phone is hardware locked it is considered a defective device, you can send it in and get a replacement that isn't hardware locked, i know, i did this
oh and FYI, online chat reps are all from India, in other words, they don't really know much and read from a script... they also have no authority at all (as far as waving charges etc.) if you want a real rep, call them up, those reps are in America and do have authority

Yes I don't even know what that locked
Thanks, I will try calling. I did not know that the chat was based in India and couldn't do anything about issues like this.
I don't want to play Devil's Advocate, but Samsung has -in fact- released an update for Canadian Vibrants to remove the "hardware lock" on those devices.
Hardware lock CAN be fixed with a software update - a firmware update.
The phone doesn't magically know that the keys are down. Something has to check, and it does this with something similar to a BIOS is a computer (otherwise you wouldn't be able to get into the Computer's setup before the system is fully booted, ya know!).
TL;DR: Yes, the Hardware lock can be fixed by a firmware update. They have already done it, in Canada (Google is you friend).
EDIT: Also, yes, it's classified as a defect and T-Mobile will replace the device. I'd try to get more info on whether or not that is in the update. If so, then I'd wait because unless you're getting you replacement from insurance and they're on backorder - you run the risk of getting a refurbished device that is in worse condition than your (new?) device. Insurance claim devices on backorder are almost always brand new since they come straight from the factory to your house.

considering both hardware locked and non-hardware locked phones have the same EXACT firmware... this is a hardware problem, not a software problem, and is not fixable through a firmware update

yup, just give them a call and tell them you want a replacement, if they say they want to charge you $10 for 5 day shipping, complain and tell them the phone has been defective since you bought it and you shouldn't be paying at all for replacing a defective phone that they sold you and it should of been checked by them before selling to you... they will waive the fee and actually send it with the $20 2 day shipping for free =)

Then please tell me why the Hardware locked Canadian Vibrants were fixed with a firmware update.
It's not to be snobbish. Just an honest question.
If they flashed a bad firmware to the device when it was manufactured, then it could exibit these issues, and the fact that all of them aren't manufactured on the same assembly line can explain why some are "hardware locked" and some aren't.
Also, hardware locked is just a nice term used to describe that the device is locked out of entering recovery/download mode via the hardware keys.
It doesn't mean the hardware is defective.
If the buttons were defective, then the phones probably wouldn't work correctly.
It's a firmware issue, I'm almost sure of it. It is not mapping the key combinations to any phone functions (like you computer bios not allowing your keyboard key to enter setup - the key works, but the BIOS is faulty and can be fixed by updating it via a flash update).
The phones are classified as defective because they are supposed to allow the user to enter recovery mode using those key presses. The phone is defective. The hardware in the phone, not necessarily.
P.S. I have done some firmware development, and I have seen similar issues to this one. Yes, it sucks to have one of those phones. A particularly puzzling example I've seen is that which made CD-ROM drive eject keys not function until the firmware in the device was updated. The button worked, but...

The hardware buttons not working as they should can definitely be considered a defect...but the problem is a software one, one found in the BML4 secondary bootloader on Vibrants as well as other world phones apparently. There are software fixes for this for other phones, so it's safe to assume a software fix can be made for the Vibrant...
This is real and it is a defect.
You have to insist...nicely...and demand...softly, that you transfer to 2nd teer PDA/SMARTPHONE tech support, they are based in the USA.
The exact conversation in the OP is what I did with the USA support, with one exception.
They actually went through the recovery process and it didnt work everytime, of course i humored them and did over and over.
I told them I tried to install a game (gameloft) and it FCC all over the place and I lucked out by hitting settings reset, privacy and reset the phone before the SD card scan was finished...Say you researched this and indeed alot of Vibrants especially re-furb have had the no recovery - DO NOT MENTION DOWNLOAD MODE!!
The will 100% get you a new one
But you have to go through the motions!
I thought I read somewhere that this may be fixable with an update. I will try to call tomorrow and see what I can find out about a replacement.
I did the JI5 update the other day and want to go back to stock because of some issues but the only way I can access recovery or download mode is through ADB and if the phone bricked I didn't want to be SOL.

As other people have mentioned, Samsung Canada has successfully fixed the 3-button issue with a software update.
Another thing, T-Mobile does not use online chat reps from India, believe it or not they are all US based. This is why I love T-Mobile.

T-Mobile better fix this problem in their next update.
And even though the customer support never saw the recovery fix in the update's feature list, maybe it is actually included and Samsung kept it secret.

Hello All, as many of you know i have had one of the famous bricked samsung galaxy i9000. Since Bell wont honour my proposal for returning my Cell phone with a receipt (not under my name), i have come to the conclusion that we need action. Below is a site i am going to contact, based out of toronto, if enough people call, we can get this "defective issue" known.
http://www.sse.gov.on.ca/mcs/en/Pages/Contact.aspx
I am also in the process of starting a petition but would like the help of people of this forum on to how to go about this.
We need to make Samsung honour their corporation competencies and aknowledge that not EVERYONE will be on contract with BELL. We must take action. I am requesting help from ALL those affected.
thanks
p.s. first way to start is to get the ministry of consumer electronics to acknowledge the defect and we shall start a petition.
Another resource you may want to tap into is the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services (http://www.ccts-cprst.ca/complaints/service-providers). They are a third party that attempt to resolve complaints against wireless providers.
Not sure if it applies to you, but take it for what it's worth.
Count me in dude!!! Im tired of not being listened to about my issues with my $500.00 "not fit for purpose" phone!!!
I believe that we not just go after Bell but Samsung as well!!!

Why did they say they wont honor your warranty? You haven't really put much information here.

I have the full receipt for my phone and everything, the phone was deactivated and the number is not in service. However, the only thing connected to the current user is a IMEI, which i had called the person who owned it, they didnt know english very well and wouldnt transfer the ownership to me.
This is a flaw in the system.
I am starting a petition to make Samsung and Bell aware that the first batch and alot of the I900m Bell devices have a Internal SD hardware problem. This is a defect, we have witnessed of up to 30% returns on these phones because of this defect alone.
The fact that Bell wont honour their warranty with samsung because of a simple (not having my name) on the receipt is trivial. I had a copy printed out. Samsung needs to recall these devices or at the very least acknowledge something here.
30% failure? Where is that figure from?
And have you tried arguing with Bell for a repair? Or did they simply say no, and you gave up? Did you try to escalate?
By law, you should be able to go to your consumer affairs place anyway, and tell them that Bell wont accept your receipt. I don't think you need a petition.
Class action suit against "samsung" only.. Count me in tooo

By the way, when you say return, do you mean repair? Because by law in most countries, they don't have to offer refunds outside the first 2 weeks if the unit is faulty.
This thread needs a lot more details...

i have the receipt but the purchaser of my phone was friend who has now moved to new york. I have no contact with him. And by law bell has to honour its warranty code of conduct, if there is a recepit available.
I am going back tommrow to talk to the http://www.bell.ca/shopping/en_CA_ON.Samsung-Galaxywith-Google/69236.details of the store, any tips or suggestions are welcome. I have read people have returned phones even WITHOUT a receipt...and look, oh i HAVE one.....interesting.
edit** the petition was for those who were unlucky and have been turned down by Bell because of no receipt.
That didn't really answer anything.. If you have a receipt, argue with them again, or go consumer affairs, but their warranty code only likely covers REPAIRING!
Do you mean repair or return and where is that 30% failure figure from? By law, they don't need to refund you, unless you have tried replacing it a few times and the problem keeps reoccurring (and you can prove the product is seriously flawed).
I believe you mean repair, but "return" is ambiguous.

according to Bell it was about 20%-30% of phones were brought back. That is why Samsung held off on the 2nd batch of shipments to fix the internal sd problem, and bells excuse was all the phones were sold out, when really there was a huge backorder.
thanks for clarifiying bud. I do mean Repair. I have the receipt and everything from the folks who bought the phone, the only problem is the receipt is not in MY name. however, i tried contacting the people who had orginally purchased the phone and they wont do anything for me. They dont speak english. So i am going today to argue with the manager of Bell at my mall and tell him that this is straight up bs. Becuase i have all of the required information, the account cancelled their service and got a new phone...ugh its just such a tight situation.
** as for the petition, if you would like your names on it, please inbox me Name, City, and COuntry you are residing in and i will add it. Thanks
I don't know how these things work in Canada, but in Australia a petition is really not going to sway a legal argument. In fact it could prejudice a case, in some circumstances.
I suggest you take the matter up with Bell again. Then talk to Consumer Affairs yourself.
Shouldn't Samsung be your point of contact BTW? I would assume since you have no contract with Bell they should be absolved of any responsibility to service your phone.
In this case the manufacturer would be the people to contact. In 95% of the things I buy have a manufacturers warranty, not a retailers.
I wish you luck, but you really should pursue this on a private basis. If things don't work out then post up your experience. If the do work out then post up how you got around it.
BTW people don't give out your name and location to anybody on the net. I know Jark99 is 95% likel,y to be a nice chap, but giving out details like that is a bit silly.

haha sorry about the "names" thing. I should have suspected that, i just wanted to make sure that we had a legit petition to force a class action law suit.
As for the manufacturers warranty, Apparently Samsung goes through Bell. But NOT really. Bell goes through a intermediary called Futuretec Solutions located in Toronto, Ontario. I have called samsung canada and they wont help me out at all. They keep saying "go to bell, go to bell." Well now im going to give bell a piece my mind, Bell is the only company to carry these phones, thus if there is a problem no one can go elsewhere. its bs. im pretty pissed off and going to show Bell that, yesterday i didnt, but today ill talk to the manager.
get the class action or whatever you guys are trying to do up and going already, and count me in
got 2 phones still waiting to be repaired but can't because they wont allow it without the invoice, even when we offered to pay for the repairs
Attention:
To all who have a internal sd card error and have bought the phone around the release date or afterwards. If you dont have a orginal receipt, go to bell and try to find a service rep who looks kind of new. From there tell them you dont have the receipt and need they might be able to print you out one. I got mine printed out and i went to another Bell Store to get mine sent out even though the phone was NOT under my name. I think the only way to get peoples phones fixed is talking to the right people.
I contacted the Ministry of consumer electronics AND telecommunications services to file a complaint, but i cannot as i am not a BELL member. If anyone is a Bell member and has a 2nd hand phone you can call them to file a complaint, and theyll act as a intermediary between you and Bell. ill keep updating this thread as i find information

For those who are interested in Samsung service center in Montreal here is the address for in-warranty and out-of-warranty, they service everything Samsung, not only the phones:
Samsung - Service Absolut
3391 Griffith Street,
St. Laurent, Quebec,
H4T 1W5
514-738-8333
Closed December 27-th and January 3-rd
They do not ask any questions about your relations with Bell or any other provider. But they still need to have proof of purchase.
PS.
They are little bit hard to find, since they are behind this Audio/Video center across Ikea.
I wish there were a walk in service for Toronto too
FutureTel will not accept walk-ins, they only deal with Lawyers... i mean... Dealers
Can we 100% confirm that Samsung Canada office here at Toronto isn't a service centre and does not take customers? or maybe they just don't do cellphones?
Also, my question is....
If I have a 2nd hand Samsung Galaxy S without proof of purchase under my name or receipt. Yet have service with Bell Mobility, will the Samsung Canada @ Montreal repair centre accept the phone for warranty service?
What do you think?

Appears to be the case, unfortunately. (See http://futuretel.ca/where.html)
If mine died (fingers crossed it doesn't, but it's survived multiple flashes so I have reasonable hope), I'd drive out there anyway and scream and yell to get it fixed. Then again, I like to take the brute force way to get stuff done.
I left my old phone today morning at 10:30 and picked up a new one at 14:30.
They gave me a completely new phone with Froyo already installed.
No questions asked, very fast service.

This is going to make my holidays!!! I have a SGS with dead sd card and it's second hand. I have the receipt but it's a renewal invoice under the name of someone else and didn't want to go to bell as I'm a client and have already send another SGS for repair under my name. I need to have this one repaired (replaced) so I can sell it.
I am very PEEVED to say the least. I purchased the samsung galaxy when it first came out (end of August 2010) had the phone for less than 2 months then it was toast! It burnt my hand...screen went dead with a bunch of pixels on screen and burnt the screen. Now Samsung Absolut outfit in Montreal kept it for 2 months plus trying to figure out what was wrong, after me bugging my carrier almost everyday to find out where my phone is Absolut decided they could not diagnose the problem or what happened to the phone....supposedly they sent it to Samsung stating they could not fix, Samsung said they would replace the phone and still NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! Tried looking for their phone number but Bell Aliant says they never pick the phone up....what is up with that??? Great customer service!!!!!!NOT~!!!!
Sorry it is a Samsung Galaxy Vibrant phone..

How did Samsung service your phone?
Did they do a software fix?
or
Did they had to replace a hardware ?
They took my old phone and gave me a brand new one. Free of charge, nothing to pay.
woha wait there, I've sent my phone to Futuretel over a month ago and there is a place in Montreal that will do that on the spot !??? WHAT ? damn it...
anyone else tried them ?
Thank you Happy Hunter for the service center info
My situation was, 3 days after upgrading to Froyo, I got a few FC and after rebooting my SGS, it was stuck after the S logo. Tried to downgrade firmware, clear cache, formatted memory, nothing worked, and the phone wouldn't start up after all that.
So i went to the service center tonight, since it was late there was no technician, so I'll have to wait the next day to know how long it'll take to repair.
I had no proof of sale, since I bought my SGS off someone. The receptionist asked me which provider I was, I said Rogers, and asked if it was unlocked, I said yes and I bought the unlock code off Bell. And asked what happened to the phone.
That's all, the receptionist looked nice, they are aware of that problem.
I'll call tomorrow to see the status of my phone and let you guys know.
Btw, I noticed that on my receipt, it said day of purchase 1/30/10, so i assume that's the date the give to people without invoice, so for those that are like my, with no invoice, pray that your phone breaks before that date

New phone doesn't always mean good, right/? maybe replacement board is a new revision or something. You never know.
Anyways, so you are saying that Montreal location will accept Galaxy S even if you do not have a receipt ?
Do they care if the phone is unlocked? or which carrier you are with ?

URGENT..Please help !! :fingers-crossed:
The device was initially freezing a lot ..So I happened to change the sd card to a 16 gb microsdhc from a 8gb one..But it still was having the same problems..Then I got to know about the EM app in the phone and I by mistake updated the touch firmware in it.
That is when I decided to flash the phone. Now while flashing the phone the phone froze all of a sudden(as already mentioned this was my original(earlier) problem). And the command prompt through which I was flashing the phone showed an error,so I removed the USB cable. From then,I'm not able to even switch on the phone(Not even able to see the Dell logo).
And please give me a solution about the touch firmware that I updated by mistake(That rendered the phone unresponsive to touch)
And there is no light even in the keyboard.
Thank you .

AFAIK, once you do the touch screen firmware update via EM, your phone can't be fixed via USB flashing anymore. From what I've read the unbricking process here on xda won't work at least. I'm not sure if a RIFF box would do it with what we have on the DVP so somene might want to chime in on this?
Does the computer recognize the phone even?

Have a google at riff box/jtag man. I think someone here was doing something with one to try and revive his bricked DVP. Have a seach and contact him maybe?
And if all else fails, someone is selling a DVP system board off the bay for $40. I have no idea about the details of the listing so check it out yourself before jumping the gun. AFAIK, it even comes with a 16GB card And make sure it's worth the $40 for such an old phone... I regreted purchasing a glass for $50 to fix another cracked glass DVP when you can get one for not that much more if you wait for deals...

(the DVP is quite easy to tear down BTW, just search the forums for a service manual)
Thanks Aleunge.. you are the man!! +2 reps to your meter for this.. i went and bought my system board.. i get a free 16gig sd card and the system board is unlocked!! best part... :good:

I don't know buying this mother board would certainly assure me that my dvp would get revived back.
And also would need the perfect tools to open up the phone ...right? Would you suggest me to open-up the dvp.(the warranty is already void).
Although I'm pursuing bachelors in technology,I've never opened-up a phone .. I don't want to regret it

Hey..just saw your post..Have you bought the system board? Is the phone now working properly ?
What kind of tools did you use ?
How did you open up the phone ?
Thanks
Hi, i bought my system board yesterday, tracking number says it will arrive at my house by monday so i'll let you know how it goes.. swapping a mother board out always fixes system errors which bricking would categorize under.. it wouldnt fix things like phone not charging or screen problems but definitely will fix cpu issues..

Oh hey mykalogist, just PM you. Didn't know you already bought the baby. Good luck with it! :victory:
And yes, SANTHOSHGODSPEED, I can't say for sure it'll fix whatever is up with your phone, but if it was mine, I would give it a try for that price. It seems very probable since so much is on that DVP board like MK said. And don't worry about taking open the phone. Just remember that it's already broken. Being physically broken further ain't so bad right?
I've taken open a few phones and the DVP is really one of the easiest. Just grab the service manual from here and peak through it before you attack it (or youtube it first). The hardest part I find is really just taking the back cover off (fingernails and guitar pick help). After that, it's easy breezy.
And I think all you need is a couple of Torx screw drivers. I think a T4 and T5 but I can't remember exactly. Tweezers or a small pair of pliers help for taking out the microSD card.
UPDATE!! :good:
Ok so i recieved my system board today from RAKI computers on ebay thanks to Aleounge's great find.. i installed the system board and my phone works flawlessly.. yay its alive again!!.. i only have two bad things to mention however.. before i do let me point out that you will be getting a totally new phone new IMEI, service tag and E sevice number so your old phone doesnt exist anymore... ok my bads, the service board i got is locked to a network i have no idea what it is i'm still pending a find i'll be checking out my EM here shortly to see what network it is.. i tried both T-Mobile and AT&T sim cards and none of them were accepted, its asking me for a PIN/Unlock code. And remember your phone is now a totally new phone so when you call dell for this unlock code they will ask for your phone info which will be listed under a different owner so they wont give it to you until you provided them your purchase invoice from RAKI Computer. Oh so thats my update, phone works and booted up again and i was able to install updates up to Tango but the phone will not accept my T-Mobile or AT&T sim ... Thanks again Aleounge and i hope this helps someone.. Remember to Rep me one
thanks

Hey ..thanks for the update ..
So according to you the phone is working fine and its booted-up and that you are able to update it to tango ..
But you are not able to use the phone with any mobile carrier...ie you are not able to make or receive calls..is that right ?
So you would not advice me to go with that option ?? or do you?
How's the tango update ? Is there much of a difference to the start screen ? Are you able to resize the live tiles ?
And if you do like me to go forward with that ..Can you please tell me how you disassembled and assembled it ?
Looking forward to you reply

Yes exactly right.. I found out via my EM that the system board i bought is currently locked to Cincinnati Bell Wireless(CBW).. Because of this it will not accept my T-Mobile Sim or At&T.. The good thing about this is that you will get a new Service Tag, IMEI and E Service number Sticker with the system board.. This information will be blank as if you purchased a new phone. So all you have to do is call Dell Mobility Support.. They are gonna ask you for this info then ask for a copy of your Purchase invoice as proof.. When you send them this information they will register then new system board which is an entirely new phone to your name and give you the Unlock/Pin code to Bypass your sim error.. I havent messed around with tango much so i dont know the new features yet.. Hope this helps..
Can you check what the rom version is?
I havnt heard of a Cbell locked VP before (it's possible I merely overlooked this though)
It's EM -> Phone Information -> SW version.
I assume it'll be something like
Code:
2250.1800.7720.219
GLEOS2A421934_?
CBW-US

You see that's the problem for me ..I'm from India and Dell representatives don't know a thing about this phone(they don't even know if this phone was ever launched in the market)..And at the same time I can't call the US helpline(as they would advice me to call the indian helpline;which is of no use..)..So even if I get this phone assembled I won't be able to make calls with it..(Unless I know someone in the US)
Yes it was CBW-US.. and it was locked to that network.. i called Dell and you are right they dont know anything about anything.. i waited on the phone for hours and didnt get any good news from they just loop holes.. But i found this guy that knew everything about the Dell Venue pro, sent him my imei and the network it was locked to and got the phone unlocked, i only paid 16$ on ebay and he's located in china where the phone was manufactured so i gave him my trust and it came through.. He unlocked the phone in literally 10mins.. i've been using it Flawless ever since..

Hey you guys, make sure to give "[email protected]" a try first with the unlocking (search the forum for more details). I've unlocked at least 4 DVPs and for the last two (very recent), I don't recall even mentioning it was locked to TMO. I think now that the DVP has hit EOL, Dell doesn't care too much about finding out who the original owner is (they asked for the first couple I tried unlocking, but I never actually mentioned it as I got them used and I don't even know the owners) or the other specifics. Just give them a try first since well... it's free! If it's a no go, go with what MK suggested?
A tip I think might help is to mention you're using it for business and will be leaving the country shortly. I also brought up how much I liked the phone

[email protected] wont help you because the system board you get from ebay will be unregistered.. I tried and got a response saying the phone is blank(unregistered) in their system so i need to call the mobility support to register the phone then reply with the phone info.. I called Mobility but theyre so unprofessional, i had to call back 5 times to get with someone who actually knows what they were talking about and still didnt get the phone registered as theyre telling me i had to wait 2-3 days and some run around.. so i met this chinese guy who said he knew how to unlock it in 10min, i sent him the paypal $16 and phone was unlocked right after.. Dell Support sucks.

(as i'm from india) I searched in more sites but I didn't get any advertisement or anything where they sell this CS.5J16R.002 system board ..do you know any other site which is offering this system board..?

Hi all, I'm new to XDA so hopefully someone can help me. I purchased a brand new unlocked note 3 N9000W8 in canada from a cellphone store on Monday Morning. The phone was great and worked without a hitch and had android 4.3 on it.
Later on during the day, there were numerous news headlines regarding a 4.4.2 was officially released. So i decided to do the software update. With failed attempts with the message "Your device have been modified, Software updates are not available"
I checked my Settings > about device > status > device status and it states custom or modified. I am unsure how this is possible thinking it was a brand new phone. After some in depth reading i powered off the phone and check the android download mode (power, home button vol down key combo).
It states device status: custom, firmware: custom, knox 0x1 (which meant my warranty was gone essentially). I proceeded to call the shop i purchased the phone at, and the manager said they buy the phones from the distributor which unlocks them before it gets in their hands. so it must have been rooted prior to me receiving the phone.
Long story short...i know its been quite the reading already my appologies. I used samsung KIES to backup the phone and it updated it back to the stock firmware 4.4.2. I was prepared to loose the root as i dont need it. More concerned about the warranty. With the device and firmware status back to original i can now do OTA updates, however
Problem i have now is after the factory firmware upgrade to stock, my sim no longer works on the network. Seems as if the device has a sim lock, but it never asked for one. A local cellphone shop in st.catharines said there might be an issue with the baseband after the official update.
before the update, i tried all the suggestions such as unmounting the sd card, wiping cache, using supersu to unroot.
Can anyone chime in on what the problem may be? I go to school here, so if all else fails i will have to go back to toronto where i purchased it, and have them figure it out. just a hassle for me to get there without a car.
Seems that the phone was software unlocked while it was rooted. Un rooting the device will simply lock the phone back up. Have you tried entering your carriers APN settings under mobile network?
You have a couple of options, you can root your phone again and software unlock your phone using "CF Region Lock Away" (I've heard that it worked on 4.3 (N900W8) not sure if it'll work with 4.4.2.
2nd option is to get a hardware unlock code from a retailer who unlocks phones.
If I were in your position, I'd try and return the USED phone back to the person you bought it from as it was clearly tampered with. You bought a phone which has KNOX 0x1 which VOIDS your warranty. You were under the assumption that the phone you bought was brand new in the box, FALSE ADVERTISING.

Meet me at the store you bought this from in T.O, I will get you a refund in 5 minutes.
Not even slightly kidding.
You were RIPPED OFF bud!! Do not allow that to go down. Tell them to switch it for another one, until you get one that has a warranty.
Seriously, my offer stands. If you want to meet down there sometime this week I would be glad to do so, I live about an hour outside the GTA but I don't give a ****. If there is anything I can do to help you in this situation I'll do it.
I have tried registering it on the fido network without any luck. Even the local cellphone shop was tinkering with it for 30minutes trying to help me out. They weren't able to do anything either. From my understanding, a software unlock only works for europe phones (based on what i have read) even the local guys said its usually just a pin unlock.
Update: The retailer that i bought it from said he ordered me a new white note 3 unlocked as well to replace my problematic one. When i go again i have to make sure its not rooted. IS there such thing as a Factory unlocked/unbranded samsung note 3 from samsung themselves?

The manager is more than willing to help me by getting me a new device. As mentioned in the previous post, i do hope that this one is unmodified/unrooted out of the box. Anything to look out for besides the software download information screen?
May i ask where you got your device? maybe i can go there and get mine. I might take you up on that offer, and I can swing by to get you. I live on the border of milton/oakville so you're not that far out.Go to school in st.catharines. It seems you're much more knowledgeable about this that i was at first.

I traded a Red Nexus 5 I had at the time for a Black Unlocked Note 3 +$200 cash on Kijiji. Came with a Spigen Slim Armor too.
There are tons of decent deals on Kijiji, you NEED to know how to spot fakes, check IMEI's, look for defects, etc.
I can help you find something if you'd like, just say the word. I will still help you deal with the other guy as well. I'll bring an SD card with .apk's on it like CPU-Z to make sure it's legit. The IMEI we just type in protectyourdata.ca on my phone or tethered laptop to make sure it isn't blacklisted. Checking for unlock is easy too, as long as we have multiple sims from different companies (I have 2, we might have 3 with yours).
I'll make sure you walk out of there with a fully legitimate Note 3. 100%.
If I can help a fellow XDA'er, a Canadian to boot, I will do it in a heartbeat.
Sometimes I come off like a **** (especially to n00bs, I am really mean now and then...) but I am always willing to help.
I watched a few videos on how to spot fake devices and this one was legit for sure. I plan to go saturday to get this sorted out once and for all. The problem is i require the knox to be 0x0 as my part time job requires me to have a phone that is enterprise capable, for the byod. In the event he only has rooted unlocked phones, i will get my money back because i need a legit clean phone.
as mentioned i really appreciate the help, Can you send me a PM with your phone number? If you have a few hours to spare on saturday im more than willing to swing by and get you, in hopes to figure out my phone problem.
