[DISCUSSION] Coming from a Nexus One (N1)... - Galaxy S I9000 General

I was considering the Nexus S (NS) seeing how unlocking the bootloader, rooting, flashing of customs ROM is almost the same.
However, paying an extra SGD$200+ for the NS over the Galaxy S just seem stupid with their hardware being so similar and in some case, thumping the NS. (And seeing how with NS being out, it's possible, the Galaxy S would also have more frequent updates instead of waiting for Samsung)
Coming from being a N1 user of about a year, would i be disappointed in the Developers' support for the Galaxy S if i do choose to get it to replace the N1 which i have sold?
How different is it to flash stuff on the Galaxy S as opposed to the N1? Are the custom ROMs for the Galaxy S every bit the same level of quality as say the ones cooked up for the N1?
Thank you.

Imo native AOSP power from google will always be better than samsung stuff. Though the SGS has become a decent phone recently. Samsung seems to make efforts to get rid off the lags. supercurio blessed us with native ext4 filesystem support. Benjamin dorbell came up with a opensource flash tool on mac/linux/windows: Heimdall. In short: if you choose to use 3rd party software right away and never ever install KIES or anything, you'll enjoy the Samsung Galaxy S.
(make sure you clean up the samsung bloatware with "Sgs tools" app from market.)

Until now, all the roms except Cyanogen mod are based off Samsung's relatively poor default UI. And Cyanogen mod isn't ready for prime time yet, unlike the multitude of roms available for N1 and it's brother Desire. Without putting down their efforts, current SGS roms (less the incomplete Cyanogen) are basically theming and beautifying the current SGS roms, and removing/adding available APKs, nothing like the MIUI, Sense and AOSP roms available on N1 and Desire.
It will always have slower support than Nexus, which has a much bigger dev base, most of the devs start with shots in the dark.
Remember, Samsung is mostly a hardware company, they need to keep selling phones for profit. Software updates will end at some point - An official Google phone will please you much more if updates are your game.

exactly thats why we hope for a good outcome of supercurio and teams work on a nexus s port. this would make the sgs independent from samsungs poor software development.

Cyanogen for froyo sgs has been abandoned, they will try with gb again I think but not guaranteed success. If they manage to port nexus s gb to sgs I would imagine that porting future google updates would be easier.. But that also is not guaranteed.
But i agree with you.. A modded sgs is one of the best android phones at the moment.
I dont think there is an easy answer at this point.. But imo, as it's 200 cheaper get it for now and then save the other 200 to go towards the next gen android phones.. I think the nexus s hardware will become out dated pretty quickly.

If you want a GPS that works, SGS isn't the way to go. If I hadn't already got a SGS I'd undoubtedly get the NS.

Thanks guys for the input. I'll do some more reading and hopefully 2.3 gets ported to the Galaxy S in the coming weeks.
If that happens, i'll definately get the Galaxy S over the NS.

Should I buy this phone?

Was wondering what's the track record of Samsung getting custom Roms/firmware?
I really like how XDA have developers to do custom ROMS for HTC phones but was wondering does Samsung phones gets same treatment? Or will be looking at far and few in between updates from Samsung itself and won't be able to update to the latest and greatest?
Really want Nexus One but the Galaxy S is sooooooooo much better *sigh*
Can't answer your question on whether the Samsung will get the same amount of Dev time that has been lavished on the HTC phones, but I was in the same situation as yourself - Galaxy S or Nexus One.
I came down on the side of the Galaxy S simply because it's a better phone all round. There's a multi-touch vid on youtube comparing the responsiveness of the screens, and the Galaxy wiped the floor with the Nexus One. I'm hoping that the popularity of this phone will mean that the Devs on here will start giving some time to the Galaxy S.
I must admit I was initially drawn towards the Nexus One because of excellent work that has been done by the likes of Cyanogen et al, but I took the long term view that surely the same must eventually happen with the Galaxy S. *crosses fingers*
For the Galaxy, there is MoDaCo. For the Galaxy Spica, there is Samdroid. Don't know much about the others, but they weren't released here in Europe anyway.
I followed Samdroid a while, thinking about getting a Spica. There are some awesome things going on there - they even tried to modify the touchscreen sensor, because the hardware does support multitouch, but the driver doesn't. AFAIK, they had no success, but still nice try. And they even opened a board for the Galaxy S, maybe Leshak fetches one and works some magic there in the future. If not, I am pretty sure somebody will.
If you want to customize it to run the latest roms, the question is: how "open" is this device?
I know that HTC made the Desire a pain in the butt to unlock/root, and they will improve this with every new phone the make, making them more and more secure and block customized images.
Is Samsung going to follow the same strategy?
I think you're right Magicdroid, the question would be how open this is. But even though the Desire was a pain to root, it HAD been rooted just cos there's lots of developers. When there are lots of developers, you'll get rooted device
I wonder if the Galaxy S will get lots of user base.............I just hope lots and lots of ppl will pick it up and then the chance of longetivity with custom ROMS dramatically increases....
I'm hopoing for good community support as well. I have an AT&T Tilt, and have doen well on the XDA site. I'm spoiled
I am very interested in the Galaxy S, but I"m on At&T, and the AT&T version i keep reading about doesn't have the same specs. So having to wait and see on that.
Also, I see a lot of negative feedback on Samsung support, and based on their previous Android phone (Behold I think it's called) is not getting an upgrade. Lots of complaints about being abandonded by Samsung.
Not sure what I'll do. If At&T doesn't get decent phones soon, I mahy have to look do Verizon.
Sorry...I'm rambling off topic.
The Galaxy S looks like a great piece of hardware.

Hilarious! I just found it and laughed so much http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVlsRCMltDg
I was considering to buy a Nexus, but now I changed my mind...someday this mobile will hopefully get root and give enough space for customizations of every kind...just wait and see - it will come in the mid of June to Europe and I'm eager to hold one in my hands
I'm disciplining myself to not get this phone until there's a good team of developers move to it to get customizations going
aaahhh the wait the wait......
and, do you have one jet? the best mod is doctorz rom. it runs very smooth

[POLL] Are you upgrading to the Nexus S?

[Q] Galaxy S I9000 to Nexus S [FULL UPGRADE]
Hiya'll
I'm considering an upgrade from my current Galaxy S "international" to the new Nexus S. Some of you may not consider it an upgrade hence I'd like to take it further here. I'd love to receive all the new updates as fast as possible unlike now when I had to wait three months for Froyo on the SGS to arrive through Kies after its official release by Google. Also reading through the forum, I doubt Samsung will release any updates beyond 2.3 for SGS.
Do you value the new Samsung handset and consider it as potential upgrade? Or would you rather stick to your SGS as you're completely pleased with it?
I'd like to know if there's anyone else out there waiting for the Nexus S as I'm
the SGS is probably a better phone. with Micro SD and FM radio is more important than flash camera and NFC I think.
As for the updates yeah I agree it would be nice but yeah it's a tough decision. I'll probably stay with the SGS unless I can get the nexus S cheaply
Guys this is what samsung want, they wont/delay upgrade to 2.3 for SGS cuzz they want to sell their new flagship phone, this is what samsung always do, and this is not just me, i've read the same thing in some other blogs and websites also.
Think about it !
The Galaxy S is indeed a better phone.
Google focused more on software than hardware, so they didn't want anything to hinder it's performance. Thus, hardware-wise, Galaxy S is the better phone, and once it runs Gingerbread - it will be even better than the Nexus S.
There will be other phones coming out with 2.3. And if Samsung still wants to sell the SGS by then, they will have to deliver it with 2.3.
Not all competition is internal. And while for some products or manufacturers it makes sense to handicap the entry level models (for example when it is cheaper to produce the same hardware, and a cheaper model is sold with reduced functionality but still at a profit) this doesn't apply to SGS, as it is the top of the line.
I think the Nexus S is more of a sidegrade, and it seems the NFC makes it rather thick. It seems more like a technology demo than a mass market product to me.
But then, GT-i9100 or GT-i9200 would also be coming. Those could be essentially identical to the SGS with the differentiator being the software. So I feel those do pose a real risk in this regard,
Best point of SGS: it will boot everything you throw at it. It is not locked down, so it is open for any formware that is released independent of kernel changes even. But a bad point is that there does not seem to be a real public, team work developer community; the serial interface to the SBL looks really interesting and might even allow booting from the external SD card! I didn't find a forum that stimulates me to do that kind of experiments yet, especially as signal to noise is so low. Whenever an interesting development happens, the threads are filled with posts like 'will this be ported to Captivate' (by whom?), repeat questions, and other displays of entitlement.
jutezak, appreciate your opinion and the SGS indeed is a great handset. However, if we'll depend on the developer community aside from the manufacturer then that would probably slow the process of receiving updates. Most developers even at XDA will run a certain project and end it as soon as it feels complete although bugs are constantly reported. Some even leave without further notice.
I appreciate all the hard work done by all developers yet the manufacturer here i.e. Samsung plays a far more significant role unless they also seem to neglect the SGS to pose their focus on another peice of tech.
In terms of hardware the Nexus S may not seem as a potential rival yet meriting it's Google heritage as the next Nexus One in line raises no compatibility issues with any Android App released to date as seen accross the platform with many other Android devices.
I'd really like to get a Nexus S
but without the extra SD card slot... it is a big no no....

nexus s is not samsung's flagship, sgs is still their flagship phone. nexus s is google's phone made by samsung.
Samsung Mobile already tweated SGS will get 2.3 for sure
there is a topic about that
in all honesty i cant see what gains there in the Nexus S to a Galaxy S owner... as stated lack of memory card expansion slot - poor effort IMO!
the only plus i see is that it runs google supplied O/S and not samsung played with version! im running JPU on my galagy with ADW.Launcher and im more than happy, stock rom, rooted but no lagfix and its far superior to all other releases. If Gingerbread is released to Galaxy S users then id happily stick with SGS over NS.

exactly and we are getting more and more custom ROMS builds per day, many of which are pretty stock android
soon enough we'll have a completely deoxed version without any junk add-on
It all comes down to money. Most of us can't afford to upgrade every 6 months. Any upgrade is worthwhile if money isn't a factor.

it doesnt help that the service providers now only offer 18/24 month contracts (i dont think anyone does 12month now!)
Loads of 12 months contacts in Oz.
It's Googles phone, not Samsungs although they make it. Doubt Samsung is going to drop the Gallaxy and start promoting a rivals phone.
Serious note. SGS should now get updates just after Google phone users, now they use the same hardware. If not Samsung didn't negotiate a good deal when agreeing to supply them with hardware.
Samsung seems the place to be now, move over HTC.

very few if any offer 12 month in the UK now
the handset is still technically Samsungs, but built specific to the needs of Google... its pretty much the SGS with a few tweaks and additions, running stock android 2.3
we (the samsung SGS owners) would hope they have a decent agreement regarding the O/S updates, but as others have said "why would they release a new flagship to outshine the SGS then make it better?"
Have you guys ever considered the Nexus S to be a GOOGLE ONLY device like all the other NEXUS/G1 dev phones? In other words its not Samsungs top of the range device. I say the GT-9200 or Samsung Galaxy 2 would be Samsungs flagship. Maybe it will be a Nexus S with FM and external memcard and LED Flash. The reasoning behind my thoery is if you looked at HTC, Yes they did release the Nexus One but handed over the marketing and support of the device to Google while they released and marketed the HTC Desire (their flagship device at the time). Either way the Nexus One isn't ment for the general public even though you can buy it and the next Galaxy whatever its going to be called will be Samsungs baby. So basicly what I'm saying is the Nexus One is a moot point for everyone saying they want to upgrade to it and just wait for the next Galaxy S (GT-9200) which I'm feeling will land or be announced in Feb as thats when Samsungs new Amoled factory will go online. Also word is that they will stop making Galaxy S after Dec anyways to supply screen for the Nexus One which will be a stop gap til launch of Galaxy S 2 (or whatever the new flagship device is) Samsung has a history of killing devices to supply screens to their flagship phone. Ie they killed off the Samsung Wave and replaced it with the Wave II which only had SLCD and lower spec hummingbird because they needed the parts for the Galaxy S.
How many of you think its worthwhile to shift to a Nexus S? If not why?!
My next device must have a dual core processor with a higher resolution to convince me to make the jump! Or atleast more RAM....if the Nexus S had 1GB of RAM, i'd surely be tempted to switch!
What's your stance?
I'm not going to upgrade to Nexus S because I don't see it as an upgrade nor as a downgrade.
We'll probably get a port from honeycomb, so I will use my SGS for a while.
Other than the pure android experience I don't see much reason to upgrade. If it had a standard submatrix samoled I'd upgrade in a heartbeat.
I'm not as i don't see it as a step forward.
Yes some things may be new and better, but overall I see the nexus as a step sidways from the galaxy s.
Personally I don't see the attraction with the curved display, now do i like the idea of NFC, I dont wanna be walking along and have things flashing up on my phone.
I dont know why they bothered inventing nfc when there is bluetooth, wifi, 3g and qr codes available.
I also see the lack of external SD card as a downgrade.

I think they testing on their own i9000 because mine still got 2.2 froyo wich is also not official rom because no foryo yet released for pakistan
samsung is extremely lazy in releasing updates, so relax and go to sleep !

Is there any real benefit to roms on other devices. I know of cyanogen name miui. But at the end of the day there ain't too much of a benefit over what we already have.
At the end of the day what Samsung may lack in software they made up for in the hardware on our devices.
Everybody here will have done their research before buying the device, it weren't hard to work out Samsung were still getting to grips with android.
Im sure in time they will mature and make very good software, but this will take time. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Totally agree man, the SGS was my first android, and also my first Samsung and I have been with them ever since. I have bought a nexus S the day it came out. Samsung hardware is great but they seemed to be overwhelmed with the different models and such. And with the SGS2 coming out soon, I am not sure about 2.3 for us. However that is why XDA is so important for us.
Rome might not be built in a day, but ROMs can be

While I appreciate the fine work done on the xda ROM's, I would much rather like the official ROM that has undergone a lot of testing and has the backing of the manufacturer. Since Samsung has not given any indication of its commitment to a phone beyond a few months, the Galaxy S would probably be the last Samsung product that I buy.

This might come as a shock, but it's one thing to ship a customised ROM with plenty of upgrade issues (etc).
It's a total other for a major company to do so. I know the guys at XDA make ROM development seem easy, but the reality is, that's because Samsung has already done most the work for them.. Lets be realistic, any ROM out there in the community which isn't a slightly modified Samsung ROM, is extremely buggy still.. Furthermore, Samsung needs to consider the various rebranded models, etc.

Bro, have you tried CM7? It's fricken amazing.
A lot of folks here on XDA are (almost) as talented, or even more so, than half the clowns working at Samsung. I'm sure they learn a thing or two from around here.
Only reason the Nexus S is so good is because Google did all the development.
Yes, Samsung has eventually shipped very nice & fast 2.2.1 ROMs. But how long did it take, and how long will it take for Gingerbread?
I'm placing my faith in CM7 which will continue to improve.

Unfortunately that is also my point of view and I cannot spend my hard earned money to a company that cannot commit itself to it's costumers. Probably the Galaxy S will be the last phone from Samsung that I buy.

I'm afraid this post is pure tripe!
CM7 is nowhere near stable yet; not even all the "advertised" features work! I'm not bashing them, because they know there's still bugs, but just think for a minute.... how vocal would you be, in a very demeaning manner, if Samsung had put out CM7 as it stands now?
As for Google "doing all the development [on Nexus S] - I think you'll find that they only did (at most) 50%. Most, if not all, the initial hardware driver support, which is the KEY to making Android work on any device, will have been done by Samsung, as it's them who has the knowledge, skills & facilities to make the phone. Once you've got the hardware drivers / abstraction layer; its very easy to put any OS you want on top! (do you really, really think there's a huge hardware difference between Samsung's Bada, Android, WP7 & even Symbian phones?)
Now, I'm not saying Samsung are the best at delivering updates, but they're better than some *cough* Motorola *cough* and their hardware is still the pinnacle of what's available. And yes, there's a few talented people on XDA, but there's also a hell of a lot more who muddy the waters and generally add to the nonsense going round by wrongly accusing Samsung / XDA devs / polar bears of X, Y, & Z.
Some of you have to take a good look into all that is "technology" and the likes...Most likely, once a device is out, YOU WILL NOT GET MAJOR UPDATES besides bug correction. And this is valid for every company.
Consider yourself lucky to get major release like 2.2 or 2.3, most of the others makers (HTC, Sony, Motorola) are still on 2.1.
Take a good look there and see by yourself:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Android_devices
Most of the devices don't even have 2.2.1 and the only one with 2.3 is still Nexus S.
WP7 had a long run before releasing the first bug correction (not even sure if it's out yet...)
Even worst, iOs users have to PAY for their release
So, you can complain all you want but reality is far from what you are thinking...
Now, as for 2.3, it's supposed to be optimised for SGS hardware (because of the Nexus S), can't wait to see how it goes!
theres a good chance we will get 2.3 because galaxy s phone are still being sold and the 4g ones
I sincerely hope samsung is gonna surprise us one of these days (even then probably later rather than sooner), since 2.3 is finally optimized for the hummingbird aswell... Also the screen shutdown animation kicks ass.
On another note: Samsung should really communicate better, and ffs train your customer support. I tried to poke for some information earlier this week, and I got a response saying: Samsung is not responsible for the updates, please contact the responsible party, in this case "Android".

Samsung Not Bringing ICS To Galaxy S. Help Us Outrage!

Sign Our Twitition Here
Dear Samsung,
Before us, you were a nobody in the Android Arena. HTC and Motorola ruled the landscape. We turned around your fortunes. Ice Cream Sandwich is touted as the biggest change to Android in a long time. Its beautiful, its fast and we want it. After reading this we are disappointed. You say that our hardware will not support it, we ask you how does the similarly specced Nexus S run it so smoothly? You say our hardware is insufficient to run Ice Cream Sandwich along with your TouchWiz smoothly. We will remind you that we have one of the best GPU's around. Given that ICS supports hardware acceleration, we feel that you are being a bit lazy with your coding. We are sure you can manage to make even a TouchWized ICS run smoothly on our devices. If you remember the HTC Desire, HTC had said that it would not run Sense UI and Gingerbread. After a lot of uproar, HTC decided to give their users the option of running an unskinned Gingerbread on their Desires. It voided their users' warranty, but at least it gave them an option. Since most of your Galaxy S devices will already be out of warranty or almost out of warranty, we feel we deserve at least this much. Bring a de-Touchwized Ice Cream Sandwich to our devices. Its the least you can do. Yours Sincerely,
The Galaxy S Family
sorry to burn your boat this will not help any body get Samsung to update our galaxy s to ics all Samsung want is to buy a new phone

HTC uses Sense UI in each and every device of theirs. Yet they made an exception with the HTC Desire and offered their users a way to upgrade to GB and remove Sense.

TouchWiz my a##!! We don't need useless touchwiz UI with ICS, as it makes ICS look ugly. I am cursing myself now that I should have waited for SE Neo instead of going for SGS !! Now our devs are our only hope!

Dont do this. Xperia neo is rubbish compared to sgs.

Samsung is shooting herself in the leg.
I do not think that SGS+ will not get ICE CREAM SANDWICH.
Why? because if i9023 (Nexus S) receives the upgrade, and it is, then why should not i9001(0) get the upgrade to?because the technical specifications of the i9001 exceeds specifications of i9023 (http://www.gsmchoice.com/en/porownanie/5020/5023/5101/0/)

If you really want ics, try teamhacksung ics. Its much better than what Samsung could put out.
Its beta but i am using it daily without major issues.

yeah but if there was a official Rom put out, then it would save the Devs the headache of having to build the Roms themselves using resources off other devices, they could then focus on the actual speed and reliability of the Rom instead of having to go through the headache of trying to port everything to the phone themselves
Instead of signing petitions, why not all of us just posted at their Facebook, Twitter and their customer service support. Seeing since so many (like 5000+) had signed the petition. If the 5000+ went to spam their facebook and twitter I guess somehow they will notice it?
I like your idea just swamp the crap out of their pages with the exact question...
i recon thats a statement
Join us in our cause to make Samsung support their customers, rather than just spit in their faces.
We've spent our well earned money on a device that was clearly overestimated, and now it's manufacturer thinks it can just throw it all away and not support our needs for a brand new Operating System which we have been waiting for for months.
Apple has always been supporting it's customers by enabling them to upgrade features and whole Operating Systems even if they own much older devices (up to 2 years back), I wouldn't want to think Samsung isn't capable of the same thing.
Join our cause and be heard.

P.S.
I would also like to post the petition link on this page, does anyone know who's the person who thought about it so we can work together on this?
They can't come up with a valid excuse else than financial ones not to put out an offical ICS rom. If it's purely financial, it means they're just treating customers like money bags. If that's the case, customer outrage is perfectly acceptable and justifiable.
So, outrage everywhere i'd say. The noisier we are more chances there will be someone actually listens.
Don't be shy, spam everywhere. Samsung's facebook, tweeter, customer support, every petition available, etc. That's what i'm doing. And if they still aren't doing anything, i'll just change my brand. Plenty of android devices (or even apple?) to chose from. No one cares for a company who doesn't care for his customers so screw them.
By the way, OP is well written and explains everything someone should expect them to do in this situation, well done.
I agree with everyone, and further more, this is not a cheap device, it's still a high end device just 15 months old.
If you buy an expensive phone on 24 month contract next time, should it be Samsung?
I guess we already spent the money so there's no need to court us. I'm not sure I would do it again.
For next phone i have two choices:
1) Buy high end android phone and be in same lame ass situation like this one
2) Buy iPhone and be settled for three years
What do you think i will do?
For me the disappointing thing about all this is Samsung's insistence on such a heavy Touchwiz layer on top of ICS.
When I saw ICS I hoped they might abandon TW as so many features from that were implemented in ICS anyway.
I had decided to upgrade my SGS to a SGS II to get ICS as it is a superior device to the Nexus S in my opinion.
Then I saw the ghastly overlay of TW which just drags ICS down. All this just forces me to go the custom ROM route to get a version of ICS that isn't unnecessarily bloated.
I actually like TW on Gingerbread but now I think Samsung has lost the plot just when they looked set to topple the iPhone.
F.ck you samsung. SGS FOR SALE. I hate my phone and samsung.

Captivate gets Gingerbread. Vibrant now only Galaxy S without it.

I may be wrong but I think this officially means Vibrant is the only Galaxy S on a major carrier without Gingerbread. Thank you T-Mobile or Samsung, whichever one of you is responsible for leaving us behind.
Captivate updated to Gingerbread via Kies Mini, not At&t OTA. Leading me to think Samsung is responsible for not updating Vibrant not T-Mobile, but who knows.
I guess people can still use custom Gingerbread/Ice Cream Sandwhich roms, but then we know you put your life at risk with no 911 and half ass GPS.

Come on Samsung give us a Kies Mini Gingerbread update!
Samsung already announced this -> http://androidandme.com/2012/01/dev...updated-to-android-4-value-pack-or-otherwise/
Manufacturers are generally responsible for Android updates to their devices, then through the carrier to the end customer. Here is an excellent article about it->

And you expected a different outcome? As much as I liked the Vibrant except for the suck GPS, I gave up on it and imported a Galaxy Nexus back when it launched. I will never.....ever....get suckered into another phone that has the Tmobile name stamped on it. And to think they just announced the Blaze 4G.....why? So they can screw the remaining customers with a Galaxy S 4G out of support?

Harsh words my friend but very true.

Vibrant probably won't ever get it unfortunately, though nothing stock on the vibrant was ever good.
God, all you guys do is *****. Go flash ics or an i9000 gb port. They're perfectly stable with great battery life. It's better than being stuck on froyo.
You're in xda. If you wanna complain about not getting an update, go do it in the T-Mobile forums.
Think of it this way: At least you didn't but a crappy htc phone.

Vibrant has been fine for me. I have CM7 nightly 182 (the last one )
Yeah, no GPS, but whatever. I'm now just waiting on an ICS build that fixes the mute/unmute issue to flash.
Samsung really dropped the ball on this phone, but it didn't stop me from making the best of it. When a "must have" quad core comes out, I'm upgrading. Until then, I'm happy with what I got.
I agree with Thechosenone, ICS Passion v11 works beautifully on my Vibrant. If you do not want to unlock your phone's true potential what are you doing in XDA? That is the whole reason this site exists, so devs can perfect their ROMS by getting user feedback and such.... Go ***** on the T mo forums please!

Well Passion may work really, really well but imagine what it could do with the actual code from the actual ICS ROM? Think there would be the mute/unmute bug, or the Deep Sleep issues, or the GPS (aside from hardware problems) issues? This thread is about GB and not ICS but you brought it up.
XDA is for developers, not people like you and me. We are nothing more that by-products. Now if those developers really want to create something special, how do they do it. By getting the source of course (github ring a bell).
Complaining here about GB or ICS is futile b/c we are not going to get either. We can try (see my signature) but until the give us the code, there will be unresolved issues. Take a look at the 2.2 ROMs. How many of those have problems. Very few my friend. Now take a look at any 2.3 ROM. Every single one of them has battery issues and/or memory leaks. Why do you think that is? Because we got an "official" Froyo to build off of and have yet to see ann "offical" GB (not a port mind you).
The vibrant is considered discontinued. It doesn't make sense for Tmobile to support it any longer. Plus, all those people that chose to switch to the memory gimped gs4g didn't help the situation any. Just think of it this way: anyone who got the vibrant will be eligible for an upgrade right around the time the gs3 will be released. Hopefully it comes with an exynos processor this time.
As far as source code is concerned, at least we have hardware that is very close to the international version.

Do you have the mute/unmute issue? I didn't know if it was for every Vibrant or certain ones. For my work, I can't be muting and unmuting every incoming call ... Thanks in advance!
It doesn't matter anyway. All of the new phones are incremental upgrades at best. If you think about the price/functionality ratio, the vibrant is still the best bet for those who already own it. I can't justify $680 (Nexus) for a phone that can't do anything that my phone does already, just because it's updated more frequently.
I would love to have that screen, but if I just hold out and actually own my Vibrant for 2 years (July 2012), I'm sure I'll have access to Samsung's Quad-Core, which will probably be much better than Tegra 3. Plus the HD screen will probably be upgraded to Plus. Not to mention the GPU itself will be immaculate for all the phone gamers out there.
As far as ICS, there is a viable option on the Vibrant and it will continue to improve. As for me, I always end up going back to Bionix V anyway (the battery life/performance perfect balance)
I will aways be sad about the lack of official post froyo rom for such a great phone as the Vibrant is. We, xda users, wouldn't use a full Samsung GB or ICS rom, but just the officially ported GPS drivers would be a huge benefit. Sometimes I think that this is THE reason for no updates from Samsung: even they cant make it properly work in GB. And it just makes me admire even more the very talented devs here that make it work without docs.
Agreeing with others here: waiting for the unmute issue to be fixed then I'm jumping ship with my significant other's Vibrant. These ROMs are better than what Samsung/carriers release in my opinion.

After switching back to Bionix 1.3.1 ROM (FishmanMod) from Gingerbread exported ROMs, I am still happy and can live with Vibrant, and after playing around with GS2 or newer android phones, feel no point on upgrading, Vibrant still works great
