$10 Data Plan working on MT4G? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried internet2.voicestream.com and wap.voicestream.com and it isn't working. Running stock. Would it work if I rooted and put on cm6 or is there another way to get it to work? Thank you.

I believe T-mo closed that loophole a long time ago, because it does check against your IMEI number.

Does the Android Preferred Web include the 4G network?
I'm also paying 30 bucks a month for mine and under services it's called 4G Web - Unlimited.
However my mom has a Samsung Vibrant and under services for her it says Android Unlimited Web.
I think she pays 25 for that.
What's the difference b/t your 20 dollar plan and my 30?
And how would I go about getting this option?

It's the same plan. The difference is in marketing terms. You need to call retentions or what they call loyalty department.
Ask then if you could apply the android preferred web plan since your friend(s) have it.

Yes the no contract plans known now as flex pay are on their way out. I recently did an online survey on this. Looks like the same plans will be offered as those on contract with an added feature of being able to set overage limits. If you don't want to pay for extra monthly minutes you can set it up to shut off your service when you reach your max. If you want to be able to go a little over you'll be. Able to set a dollar amount. Of course the only info I have comes from a consumer survey.

[Q] ****** t zones on HTC myTouch 4G ?????

I have had the t-mobile t-zones $5.99 plan for over 4 years, now grandfathered, but it works flawlessly on my HTC Touch Pro 2 (WM6.5). No issues there. That phone however is only 3g.
I live in an area with full 4g spectrum and would surely like to make use of that.
With that said, i bought a non-contract HTC myTouch 4g.
After popping in my SIM, the web browser forwards me to an upsell page, where it asks me to upgrade my plan to a $30 android plan.
Now, times are tough and the gold is scarce so i'm definitely not looking to get a $25 jump in my plan, times two (for my wife too) total $50/mo more... for something that we already have for years.
I've tried various settings for APN that i could find from some forums but everything leads me back to the upsell page.
epc, wap, internet1, internet2 ... etc..
Interestingly I had tested this out on a friends phone a few months ago before buying my own, (myTouch 4G) using my SIM and it gave me an awesome throughput of close to 7megs down.
T-mo tech support said it'll not work with the $5.99 tzones as the android phone accesses the data in a different way! baloney!
Please point me in the right direction...
Has anyone made this work ?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

The support person was telling the truth, the phone really requires the 30 bux to get data. There's always the cheaper data w/ 200MB if you want that(Will use really quickly!). There's no way to avoid this, even if you are grandfathered in.
Unfortunately they know which phone your using from the imei number, and therefore block it. If you another phone that showed it as unknown or any phone that came out during that promotion would have worked.

no wonder t-mo cant make it... no one should expect any company to give 4g for $6, let along unlimited 4g.

T-zone will work with any phone that is not a Blackberry, Android, Windows, or Symbian. The Nokia Nuron and the Samsung Gravity T are the two most popular options for that data feature.

It will be not be detected if it is an ATT phone for example and therefore will not required u to add a data plan, viceversa is the sameway. U see O .
But If you add it...certainly u will see a big difference on the use that you can give it to you PDA.

AT&T phones will only get EDGE on T-mobile, and vice verse. Now if you get a Canadian HTC Glacier (myTouch 4G) or something it might be a different story...
I know how you feel. When I signed my wife up a year ago I had an iPhone and was using the T-Zones plan flawlessly. They saw that and were like, "t-zones doesn't even exist anymore" and made me upgrade my iPhone to a $20 plan. When I got the MT4G I had to upgrade to the $30 plan. It works well, but you're right, it's a lot of money...

My judgmental friends, i'm looking for technical advise... not financial or personal.
You don't know me, nor my situation so don't judge.
And yes, i do drive an expensive car and I wouldn't mind taking it to Walmart if they serviced it or there was a Walmart nearby.
Please pay attention to this :
1. I've had t-zones for ages and over this period it has worked flawlessly with most models of Blackberry i have owned.
2. I have HTC Touch Pro 2, which runs WM6.5 for last 2 years and i get super 3G speeds unlimited, not the razor era Bamm Bamm!
3. I tested my SIM out with a colleagues HTC myTouch 4G before i got my own - and it worked awesome a month or so ago.
So in essence it's not the protocol the phone is accessing TCP, it's something T-Mobile is blocking.
This move by t-mobile would be justified if i got the device from them for free and obviously being fair, they want to recover their cost.
And yes, getting a non-contract phone is cheaper than getting a contract one in this case... astonishingly i used my 3rd grade math to figure that out.
In closing, i personally do not believe in the notion that "it cannot be done..." someone is already figuring it out somewhere in the world while you were saying that!!!!
Peace!
Technically, theoretically, there is a way to keep your tzones with tmobile by changing one number. But I think its illegal to do, nor will I tell you. And I think you will still be 3g...
I have to say suck it up and pay the piper. Oh and the data is $20 for preffered customers.
Why do you deserve to pay only $6 when the rest of us are paying for it? I've been on tmo since voice stream....
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Aggreed you can get 20 android web as a long standing customer. To get t zones to work you'll need to spoof your imei. And FWIW the nexus1 works with t zones because it was never sold in stores or thru tmo.

Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Technical support, I agree with u. If you had purchased a different PDA on different provider it would not required to update your service. The network recognizes the imei of the phone and by the new pda policy you have to add a data.
It happens with every provider.
Good luck man.

EDIT: Comment deleted. Ain't worth it.
Just to help the OP out, the reason why the mytouch 4g probably worked was because you inserted a new sim into the phone. That's why, alot of phones work the first couple days using a phone with tzones but after a couple days, you're sent to the upsell page. Tmobile has a listing of all the imei's that they sell.
The nexus one was not officially sold through tmobile - always sold through google.com. As such, tmobile doesn't "have" your imei to know, but they kinda do. if you called into 611 in the first few months of the nexus one release, it sent you to google for tech support vs. tmobiles helpline. however, tmobile just chose to never block the nexus one. however, if you bought a g2, mytouch 4g, nexus s, etc....your tzones normally works for about 24-48 hours and then boom...upsell page. I know this cause everytime there's a new phone release, i try to see if it works on tzones. I personally can understand not wanting to leave tzones. I have it from when it was 2.99 + i get a 18% student discount that has yet to stop too. it's hard for me to let go of unlimited internet for so cheap, but in all honesty, i make enough money where i probably should pay the $20 for the unlimited android plan so i don't have to be so picky and choosy with my phones. before the whole 3g craze, i would change phones every few months.....and now, i keep using my nexus one and buy other phones and won't relinquish the nexus one because it's incompatible with the cheap data plan. I think i just might let it go for the sensation 4g though, we'll see. i've had to say goodbye to a tmobile g2, nexus s, and g2x already.
hey u guys only pay 20 bucks for unlimited data on the mytouch 4g? they charge me 30 dollars and i have been with tmobile since 2009 lol
Need a promo plan to get promo data. Got 3 lines unlimited text, 3K mins, and unlimited data with the 5GB soft cap, not 2GB. Paying 175. Also my line routinely bumps 10GB plus without any balk from tmo. Maybe cuz my mom doesn't touch her data so they let me munch off her allotment.

Republic Wireless $19 unlimited voice, SMS and data service: Nov 8

Update:
I got a coupon code to get the phone + 1 Month of service for $100. Comes with 30 day money back if you don't like it.
"There’s so much more we have to show you. So visit, look around. Oh, that $99 offer we told you about? To get it, use the code welcome19 to join before November 27, 2011 at 11:59 pm ET."
Found this over at fatwallet.com (http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/1136530/)
Here is what is posted there:
The service will require a special Android-based phone. Calls and SMSs will be routed via VOIP when on wifi and via cell towers otherwise.

Summery:
The phone will primary use wifi for voice and texting and if no wifi is within range it will jump over to the Sprint network for voice, texting, and 3g data (no data cap). I guess you will need a CDMA android phone. Not sure yet if you have to buy a special phone from them but I'm sure someone will come up with a rom to flash to a Sprint android phone.
If this is all true it would be great to have one phone number, text, and unlimited data for only $19 with VoIP! I'll sell my G2x and find a phone that will work on this in a heart beat.
Let me know your thoughts.
I think I'm going to get one. If the phone if just an LG Optimus maybe someone can help me dump the ROM and flash it to a normal Sprint Optimus so you don't have to buy there phone.
From what I've read, you need a phone with special hardware sold by Republic, and judging from the picture on the website, it's probably going to be the LG Optimus S/V.
If it pans out and works like they say it will, I'd considering switching from Virgin Mobile. I'm already using the Optimus V, so it wouldn't be that much of a change for me.
I wonder how much they are going to charge for the phone?

How much cellular usage is too much?
It depends. Even assuming 0% wifi usage, for example, you could consume 550 minutes, send 150 texts, and download 300 megabytes of data without crossing the community’s fair use threshold. Everyone's usage patterns will be different, but we're confident you’ll be amazed at how little cellular you actually use when you have a phone that makes it easy to leverage the power of your Wi-Fi networks.

The pay as you go plan is 50 cents/day for unlimited web, only on the days you use it. It's 20 cents per minute for voice calls, but if you froze the dialer (or never used it) and didn't give out the Boost number, voice would never get used.
Since GrooVeIP will work over 3G or Wifi, your max cost per month (after phone and GrooVeIP) would be $15.50.

You can tether for free (after root, remove or freeze tether manage app). and then you can tether for free unlimited (with "4g" speed) without being throttled if you use the APN trick (search for it).

It does work for me. I am at 200MB unlimited plan and I have used 413MB so far. I have deleted tether manager and tethering does work for me. I have been tethering my phone with my samsung galaxy 10.1 tab. I don't stream at all so I don't use that much data. You would be surprised how much data 'word with friends' uses though.
so does that mean we'll have to call in tmo and request for this new free service? for our rooted phones with tether manager frozen, do we need to unfreeze it or re-install it?
Just use tether as u would if u were rooted. No need to freeze anything.

I currently have the 5GB Android Preferred Data plan. Short story: it looks like users on this plan is not eligible for free hotspot.
Called t-mo this morning regarding the hotspot promo. First with regular CSR. She was aware of this promo, but said that free hotspot is only available as a bundle with the premium 5GB (or 10GB) data plan. Android Preferred Data Plan subscriber has to "upgrade" to one of the regular bundles.
Called t-mo again now asked for retention. He was NOT aware of this promo. Checked with his supervisor and they do not see any free hotspot feature as an add-on. He said he's terribly sorry but there was nothing he can click to add on. He said that if something became available he will call me back.

Tried the APN manager trick but didn't work for me either. Deleting the pcweb.t-mobile.com APN does not work for me as it'll just reappear.
I had to use the new SIM that came with the white S2 to enable wifi-calling, and I suspect that the pcweb.t-mobile.com APN is hardcoded on the SIM. And everytime you change the APN, it'll copy the that pcweb APN back to your phone.
If there's anyone who got the APN trick to work with new SIM, please voice your success!

loyalty (retention) department and regular CSR are definitely different departments and seeing different promotion lists.
I tried it again with loyalty. The rep did not know this promotion either looked it up in "the other department." However, she said that since the Preferred Android Data plan is already a promotional plan, I won't be able to get the hotspot feature unless I switch to the regular 5GB data plan. i just got off the phone with a regular csr as well, but no luck in getting that feature added for free. i have to switch over to the $30 5gb plan to get that, but nah... since there is one success story on this thread, maybe i'll call again someday and see if i'll get lucky.

I just did mine over the tmobile chat and i got the promotion added to all my lines NO QUESTIONS ASKED. And i have android preferred plan. It really is hit or miss on who you get. The whole thing took less than five minutes and very painless, i was surpised.

Did you have to upgrade your data plan or did they just give you the devices? I just upgrade my data plan when I bought this phone, not interest in moving from the 5gb to the 10gb.

If you have the 5GB plan @ $30 they just add it on for free. If you have the loyalty "preferred android web" @ $20 it seems most CSRs won't add it unless you "upgrade" to the $30 plan. However, there seems to be at least one successful situation where the rep added it to the loyalty plan YMMV.
I added it but I upgraded from the $20 "android preferred web" (5GB soft cap) to the $30 plan. I felt the upgrade was worth it, since it seems that T-Mobile is making it more difficult to get around tethering (even rooted) with every new phone they release.

You want the cheapest bill, read this!

Check out this setup. Run a mobile hot spot and nothing else on your device. You use google voice for your voice, text, and voicemail. Then you truly have unlimited everything running through wifi and your bill is under 30 bucks with no contract. Cheaper than boost, virgin, cricket, you name it. Just wanted to share this setup with the community and see what you guys think. Sprint will even let you use your employee discount for more savings!

Is this scenario hypothetical, or do you have first-hand knowledge of this being possible? I thought that the mobile hotspot is an add-on and not a standalone option.
It can probably be a stand-alone device as it provides internet access on Sprint's mobile network (3G/4G)
However, the biggest package is 12 GB per month at 80 bucks. and then .05 cents a MB overage. 12 gigs isn't much.
I was also wondering where he was getting the $30 price point?
I think he's talking about a prepaid 4G service like clear, which does work.
