why when you plug the phone up to charge the touchscreen goes nuts can this be fixed with a software update?
edit:wrong section please move
you are using a different charger from the one recieved from the phone or you are using some old and faulty usb port from a computer.. These problems are reported in the Apps and themes section actually the wrong place 2

Sounds like either your cord or your phone has a problem. I'd exchange them while you can.
ok it does not do this when I plug it into my room or my other PC so why does this happen when I plug it in my living room or in my laptop! Ive about had it. I hope this is fixed with a software update

There's no problem with your phone, software or hardware. The problem you are experiencing is from the usb port not providing correct voltage that the phone need. Use the cord with the provided wall charger will not give you this problem.
Same thing happened to all 4 of my touch screen phones when used with some third party chargers or low voltage usb ports.

That's pretty strange. It sounds like the circuit in your living room has more noise in the power, but usually a DC charger should reduce that enough.

I plugged in an eBay cheapo charger and screen's touch goes all wonky on me too.
no software can fix what is clearly a voltage issue coming from either your charger or the source that your charger is plugged into. Had the same issue last night on a walmart charger but when I use the provided usb cable in a decent usb port or the wall charger provided by samsung, the problem goes away. I would steer clear of using the problematic charger/usb cable/wall outlet to prevent possible long term damage to your device.

I noticed it happens when I have two plugs in my wall. So this is my outlet? How am I suppose to charge my device then? I REALLY want this device and do not wan't to return it because of the power issue. This didn't happen to my G1, im guessing because it used up less power?
Same thing happened to me so i took it back to BB and exchanged it. Its the phone. Go ahead and exchange it.

I used a cheap charger and I have this problem, or even if I use my wife's Nokia also like this.. what I do is pull off the battery and reinsert and your problem will gone.. alternatively, use back the original charger.. or your case, avoid using the socket which gives u the problem like your living room..

This does not happen when I plug it into my pc can you explain that? Also I'm not going through the hassle of returning the phone again just to have the same problem occur because it is not my phone.

I've come across a second individual on this forum who has ruined their phone by using an incorrect charger within the last week. I can't stress the importance of making sure you are using valid chargers. Samsung ports are VERY sensitive and from personal experience are expensive mistakes to make. One MAJOR thing I've noticed that most seem not to is the following:
When the phone is plugged in and charging, you notice it becomes less responsive and or buggy while texting or unlocking. Also while charging, haptic seems to get stuck or seems to happen at random intervals when using the phone. Another major one some completely ignore, when the phone actually pops up a notification to enter usb mode while plugged into a charger and not a computer.
Just a warning...
Any more details on what conditions are problematic? I've been using non-Samsung chargers and cords since September with no issue.
I've been using a BlackBerry (Storm1) charger on mine since Christmas with no problems, I mainly use it as I need a much longer cord length than the Samsung.
I also used it on my D1 with no problems.
Still, I'll keep an eye out for glitches, thanks.
I purchased a Samsung OEM charger from Amazon.com (marketplace) for less than $5 to use at my desk at work. I found it by going to samsung.com, finding the item number of the charger I wanted, and searched Amazon that way. It's not a detachable USB charger like what came with my phone, but I assume it's legit. I mean who would manufacture and sell counterfeit phone chargers?
yeah I am curious about this too; I just took USB as to be universal
You can use any charger you want so long as it supplies the correct voltage.
that is electronics 101
I get the USB prompt when charging in my car because it is supplying the voltage that a computer would supply, and less than what an AC charger would supply.

Negative ghost rider...I've encountered those that have different pin layouts before, fried my samsung moment...but it is true, voltage is key.
You also must be aware of the amperage of the transformer in the charger.. if the amperage is too low it will cause a voltage drop

Check to see the stock setup and compare. I just decided to post this as a word of caution b/c I was questioned earlier if it was normal that their phone would loose sensitivity and act choppy when plugged in.

Then something is wrong. If you notice it starts jumping around when plugged in, there is a flux in flow or some of the pins have been messed up.

USB itself is a standard (it will always output 5v at up to 500mA). Charging over aUSB port its defined by the manufacturer, and can vary greatly.

I read that in more of a "what kind of a sadist would design his micro usb charger to behave differently from another?" kind of of way. It's a heck of a cruel practical joke given that
A) phone makers have finally standardized to micro usb after already creating a huge mess with chargers in the past.
B) micro USB is practically exclusive to mobile devices.
C) if there really are cables that use different wiring, there is no easy way to tell.
FWIW I am getting by just fine with a ultra cheap Chinese USB car charger and micro USB cable combo. I also have interchangeable Plantronics, LG, and generic AC USB chargers that I plug ight same cables into. No issues, luckily for me. Pretty disappointed to find out I have dodged a bullet here.
NOTE:
LG: 0.2A in, 5.1V, 0.7A out
Samsung: 0.15A in, 5.0V 0.7A out

My nexus so far seems great but i have this issue and idk if its a defect or idk? When i go to charge my phone with the stock AC adapter and even a HTC adapter it starts charging on AC then sometimes switches to USB and charges slower. And I have to like plug it in and out a few times for it to finally catch as AC its super annoying and my GNex never had that issue. And when i want to use the phone on AC the Charge Drops significantly sometimes discharging and im not even doing anything intensive. Does anyone have this issue? Is it a problem with the USB cable maybe? Or do you think this is a defect? Because its about to be 14 days and i dont have much left to get an RMA cause its what im considering and if I need it i dont have 380 dollars in my bank account either if i do need it so idk how that would work. Any help would be appreciated Thanks!
It lowers the incoming current, by dropping to usb charge, to help keep the battery cooler. They seem to be really trying to keep the battery temp down on this thing.
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.
Really? Do you know the temps? Or does anyone? Cause sometimes it changes to USB after plugging it in for like 5 mins and i wouldnt think it gets that hot that quick. And when i finally get the AC to seem to stick the temps go up to 30-35 degrees celcius as normal and im getting around 850mah and it doesn't drop to usb charging it just drops current sometimes mainly when im using it obviously. So idk if it really is what you say or maybe someone could elaborate more?
I just want to get to the bottom of this issue so to know if i need to get an RMA :/
I forgot to mention that it also seems to randomly switch between AC/USB/UNPLUGGED really fast sometimes and i have to unplug and replug to get a charge I have no idea why.. I really want to know if its a software issue or hardware. Thats my main concern.
Woww this makes sense Ive been trying to figure out why this freaking thing was taking so long to charge. this reminds me of the galaxy s and how long that thing took. hopefully this is a software bug and they can get this thing worked out

I have that same problem with the charger that came in the box.once it goes to USB it take forever to charge but when I use the charger from my gnex it stays on ac and charges really fast not once does it goes to USB.so I tried the N4 charger on my HTC thunderbolt and gnex and both would go into USB mode and charge really slow.

For what it's worth, my Nexus 4 *NEVER* charges in an AC mode using the OEM charging plug, regardless of which power point / cable I use with it. And to charge from 'critical' to 100% took about 7 hours last night. Wtf.
It's been RMA'd as I don't believe this to be correct behaviour. Perhaps also related, the USB computer connection has stopped working. It'll charge via USB but won't connect to any computer.

Yep, tried a whole bunch of different power sockets, usb charger plugs and cables. Still screwed. The more I read, the more its obvious that the devices behaviour isn't correct.
You should send it back because mine charges fine. It takes 2-3 hours to charge mine to full from empty. I'm using the charger and USB cable that came with the phone.
I'm actually facing the same thing, I slept for 3 hours and woke up to my phone being only 60% charged. I tried plugging it in and out a couple of times, and now its back to AC and not switching to USB anymore.
In using Franco kernel and even enabling USB fast charge doesn't keep it from showing USB.

Yea mine is missing it to I wonder if that is why? And i just got my RAVpower external battery and that usb has all the pins and i tried to charge my phone with the lg brick and the ravpower usb and it seems to charge fine goes to ac every time. So im really wondering if its the LG USB that i got and it being faulty or not. I need to get another USB to test this out. Cause i dont want to swap out an entire phone for just a usb..
I've noticed mine charges as USB when using the stock LG charger. I had put it down to the 3 metre USB cable it was attached to, but I guess it's just a pants charger.
I just started having the same problem since Sunday. Had the phone for 2wks now. I had the same problem with my gs2. I really don't like these adaptor charger now a days. I just got my charger yesterday and it doesn't seem to charge properly. I put it on and it'll charge maybe 10% then stop. Take it off and put it back on the charger and it won't start charging unless I unplug the cable from the back of the orb and plug it back in. This is very inconvenient and I'm wondering if the orb just sucks or is it just mine? Please give me input if you have the official wireless charging orb.

I dont have this issue, knock on wood. Mine charges to 99%, then slowly to 100% and then stops the LED, I turn the screen on to see the % and its charging again.
I am not sure how the LED's are displayed, does the LED off mean its done charging and is on battery now?
In either case, Once I see its at 100% and the LED is off, i remove it from the orb, it soon drops to 99%, 98% but stabilizes.
Ya I don't have that issue , mine charges to 100 then stops drops down to 98 then starts charging agn to 100... If I was u I would install factory IMG get it 100% stock and see what happens if u get same results , ID send in for warranty , i like the orb but hate how its not recognized as a charging dock, Romanbb ( aokp) is writing code to change this tho
I THINK ! Franco kernel causes a extra wake lock but not sure actually testing now with stock kernel will test Franco agn tomorrow. only issue I'm having but it works either way

I had the same issue until some bright person told me that the wall plug was a different ampage than the wall plug that came with the N4. 1.2 amps as opposed to 1.8. This made the difference to the problem you are having for me. What are you using in the socket?
Unfortunately the problem I am having now with this Orb (and another Qi wireless charger that I purchased as I thought the Orb was faulty) is that the N4 will turn off n the middle of the night. Not good when you are relying on the alarm clock!!!
In using the cable and plug that orb came with. Which are you using? The cable and plug that the phone came with? And that's fixed your issue except for the turning off?

No kidding. That would hurt a little
I am now having this problem after my phone got wet. No AC or DC chargers will work but the phone will always charge from a computer or even the USB interface of a car.
Even if I can get an AC or DC charger to be recognized, the phone will show as charging but the battery will continue to decline.
It is making no sense to me though I assume getting the phone wet partially fried something.
Yeah the voltage is increased to charge you battery when on AC power, at the kernel level. USB voltage is lower. So i'd say surely fried, and will no doubt stop working sooner or later.
I know that on my s2 I had an issue where it would say its charging and when I woke up in the morning no charge at all. The pin/row of pins or bar if you will would bend down and not make good contact. I used a tooth pick to pry up on it every time it did that.

Thanks. I didn't realize that the charging port was removable on the S4 so I swapped that out and all is fine now. :good:
Ummm... No its not the voltage. It is the ID pin. The voltage stays the same. The only actual difference is the milliamp mAH output of the charger. A normal USB plug has 500mA our charger has 2000. How the phone tells the difference? The 2 data pins inside he charger are shorted together. The voltage always stays the same.

I just starting having this issue last night...out of nowhere while the phone was plugged in, it said "Unable to charge. Use the original charger."
The odd thing is it actually charges a little in between the messages popping up, so it makes no sense...it's an obvious contradiction. lol I did a reboot but that didn't fix it. I'm using the oem charger.
This morning it happened a few more times but after unplugging and plugging back in quite a few times, it seems to have stopped - it appears to be charging normally (for now), but I'm still concerned!
Any suggestions/ideas?

I've seen it happen now and then on my phone. Usually it just means the charger isn't very well suited. This happened when I was using the charger for an MSI Tablet that my wife uses and keeps plugged in in the living room. It does charge very very slowly.
On another note, I actually had the phone tell me last night while I was outside that the battery was too cold and that it couldn't charge while hooked up to my external battery pack.....now THAT was funny.
Were you using the original charger the whole time? If so your USB port might be going bad?? I had to replace mine on my Galaxy Nexus which was a Samsung.

Hey, yeah the same charger the whole time. This is very odd because now it's not doing it anymore. I just got the phone a few months ago so I can't imagine it's the USB port...that would be ridiculous!

Hey buddy I have the same issue. I am not sure if it is the USB 3.0 High Speed port. But what I did was use a stand micro USB cable with the original charger and it works. I am going to ask for a warranty exchange here shortly. But I suggest you try that.

True, that would be odd. I got mine just a week or so ago and it charges fine with the original 3.0 charger and my old 2.0 ones from my galaxy nexus. I'd just keep an eye on it and if it keeps happening, it may be worth getting a warranty replacement.

Hey man, it's funny that you say that because if it continued to not work that was the next thing I was gonna try (standard usb cable) thanks for letting me know I'm not alone here! It's kind of ridiculous that a two month old phone would have these sort of issues, especially at this price range...it's pretty much inexcusable.
If it continues to happen I'll be trying for the warranty exchange as well!
Thanks!

out of nowhere while the phone was plugged in, it said "Unable to charge. Use the original charger."
I did a reboot but that didn't fix it. I'm using the oem charger.
Any suggestions/ideas?

I'm having a severe case of this issue on my Note3.
No matter what charger cable I use (including 3.0 OEM), w an OEM base or not, no cable will charge and always gives me the "Use original charger" statement. The only way to currentlly power my device is via Qi Wireless or swap batteries.
I'm not sure what may have caused this.
The only big difference with my usage is I recently bought Anker batteries for swapping the OEM battery. But I've put my OEM back in and Im still getting this issue.
Dont kno if there's any relation but LG Qi Pad use to charge through the Seidio Dilex just fine, but now I have to take the case off. Qi Wireless charging still works fine on my Lugulake with the Dilex on though. Difference between then and now is I added a Skinomi on my back cover (excessive, i kno, for those occasional days when I want to go bare).
EDIT
my PC doesnt seem to detect my NOTE3 as a storage drive either when plugged in. Ugh, i may have a busted port. I wonder if I may have damaged it when installing my Skinomi. The adhesive requires heat to activate so I had plastic wrapped my phone and wrapped a hot towel around it to help thhe curves stick down (no it wasnt plugged in at the time)
other details, likely irrelevant, is I recently added a 64GB SDXC the device that previously didnt have external Storage.

I have this issue with my Note 3 as well it will charge with 2.0 but I get error message with 3.0 I called verizon first time after saying they would replace it they sent a 12" usb 2.0 cable which they charged $20 for I called back second rep stated she knew what i meant and she would sent the correct one out right away and of course remove the charge The sent a 3' usb cable with a led on it so i call back a third time and was advised they do not have usb 3.0 in stock and internal documents instruct them to transfer to Samgsung I call samsung and they rep tells me nope we don't have usb 3.0 either and that their documentation advises that they ship usb 2.0 I know this may seem petty but I paid $600 for this phone and I want to use usb 3.0 and it should be functioning oh yeah charging phone with cable with usb 2.0 that i had from my note 2 and now I see never carrier or manufacturer really care since they have my money and 2yr commitment

Try a different USB power source (charger). They should be available worldwide.
