Hi,
I'm currently developing an app that needs to run and keep the PDA awake.
I have gotten around the screen dimming and the device going to sleep, but since enabling the Lock screen on my HTC Touch HD it will lock once the time, 30 mins in this case, runs out.
I'm currently using C# to write this program, is there any way of stopping the device thinking it's not been used for a while. I had thought I had gotten around this when I stopped it going to sleep, but the new lock screen must use a different mechanism to check for activity.
Cheers,
Paul.
Maybe this shows that I am a noob, but here it goes.
I want to save my battary power when running the GPS, but all the power saveing settings turn the phone onto standby, thus loosing GPS lock (and when I am using my better bluetooth GPS, it locks out the bluetooth and I have to re-boot). Is there some why to just turn of the screen? Is that "an app for that"? I am currently trying out SVM Power Manager, but you can not set it to turn the screen off in 2 minites or whatever. To use it how I need, I would have to turn off the OS's power saver, and always manualy turn off the screen using SVM Power Manager. All the power manager apps I have seen work like that.
Help!
you will probably have to buy an extended battery man. i think even real android phones batteries drain pretty quick from what i hear.
Did some testing. It seems that the battery will last for about 5h with the screen of (using SVM Power Manager to turn it off), and the GPS running (GPSed running it).
Understood that the battery is just under powered, but I was wondering if there was a way to make the screen automaticaly turn off after X amount of time, but not have the phone go into standby.
I also bought one of those battery powered battery chargers (battery extender). But the one I got turned out to have only 500mAh (compared with 1100mAh in the phone battery), so it turned out to only help a bit. Maybe I will try to make one with a voltage regulator and a rechargable 9V battery
I think one of the pmsleepmodes may support this (in default.txt) Try 2 or 3. It seems like one of these didnt do a full power collapse, but did turn the screen off.
katmandu421: I am not familiar with this stuff. Can you give me a bit of a more detailed explination?
Is this a built in windows mobile funciton. Can I access this in the registry?
I love it how most of us would assume he's talking Android. Yes in android, editing your default.txt to sleep mode 0 would turn off the screen, but not sleep the system. 1,2, or 3 would allow the different system board types used in various Vogues to go to sleep.
WinMo however is a different story. The GPS in the Vogue is a low power chip, but from everything I can gather is requires the system to stay fully awake. If you find an app that allows you to turn off your screen, post back but I don't believe there is much hope to that. Windows seems to think that when the lights go out, it's sleepy time.
Also, the radio on the Vogue doesn't sleep, and it's use to wake up the phone i.e. incoming calls. The GPS is part of the radio so if there is a way to keep the system board awake, in theory it should work.
SVM Power Manager will turn off the screen while keeping everything awake, but it is not automatic. I have maped the camera button to this program, so it is not a huge hassle, but I realy would like to have it automatic.
Will consider installing Android.

Did anyone ever figure out how to do this? I'm trying to figure this out as well. After finally getting GPS to work, now I'd like to be able to use some apps that need to run when in standby.

Check on Dev&Hacking. An app just came out today that does exactly what you are asking for here.

Thanks! That looks like a handy app.
An update (in case anyone hits this thread later)...I made this one change which seemed to clear up all of the problems (found elsewhere but can't post outside link yet.)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A3 8-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\Connections\Phone as Modem]
"Enabled"=dword:00000000"
Now this is in conjunction with QuickGPS and all the other fiddling I've done, so I don't if this alone is responsible.
However, when running Google Maps or other GPS applications I get a lock within 5-15 secs. Also, when coming back from standby it's able to re-lock in the same amount of time. This normally required a soft restart before.
For apps that track your routes, such as SportyPal which I've been using for mapping my bike rides, they can keep a lock even in standby mode. I'm not sure if the app itself is able to hold a lock or if QuickGPS may be helping it. Either way it works.
I'm having issues where after going to sleep, it wakes up with the lcd very dark. It doesn't matter which level of brightness I put it on, the lcd is still hard to see. Rebooting solve the problem. Just wondering if anyone experienced this too. I hope it isn't my lcd dying...
This happen on both froyostone and bangster. I'm on the latest radio using tmousa.
I had this on bangsters 1.2, but haven't seen it on 1.3b, but only been running that build for a few days.

i had this a few times before on a shubi build. I came to the conslusion that it is the screen not fully coming out of sleep. Seeing as it only happened when I put the phone to sleep and then tried to wake it immeadiately or got frustrated and impatient with it and tried tapping buttons repeatedly until the screen came on.

I had this same experience. Patience is a virtue with these phones. As long as I wait if its taking a bit to come out of sleep, I get zero problems.

thanks for the advice. I hope its just a software glitch. I will just have to be more patient when coming out of sleep.
My solution

Here is my solution, i posted it in a similar thread, I think the key element here is the bsb tweaks part, hope it helps, thanks:
I solved this problem in my phone.
even turn on/off/on/off/on/off etc the screen, the devices wakes up correctly every time.
I don't really what exactly fixed but.
i installed Miris romm 20.0, then i turned off the auto screen off *start/system/power, so the screen nevers dims or turn off. I turned off the charge the device when it is connected to the computer, turned off quiet pickup, turned off 3g.
and now i think this is the key, installed bsb tweaks and turned off everything(even power savings), disable data connections and screen rotation, I only left use high glymp cache. reboot and run android, in winmo i dont have anything installed besides bsb1.6
in android i have the task killer on and set cpu at 768mhz ondemand. no profiles. battery last well over 24 hrs moderate use. by the way im using shubcraft, and the gsensor disabled kernel. thanks,
edit: also my auto sync is off in android and my wifi is always on.
I dealt with the problem by putting a widget to control screen brightness on my home page, if it goes dim I can find it ' blind'
Sent from my HD2 on mattc froyo sense.
Yeah it does happen to me if I'm being impatient and banging on the screen before it fully wakes up. Haven't found a real solution yet, but so far I would just try my luck by turning on/off/on/off several times, hoping that it get stucks momentarily again to let if "fully" wake up. Worst case scenario, reboot.
I used to get great battery life on my Iconia but lately something is turning the screen on (to the lock screen) and staying on and just draining the battery. The screen does timeout when it's unlocked like it should, i have it set to 1 min i think. I'm rooted and running taboonay. i can run logcat but i don't know what to look for.
updated to taboonay 2.1b and it seems to have fixed it. i think it was an issue with it looking for a SIM card.
switched to lightspeed rom. it's doing it less often but it still happens. ideas?
This is no doubt a rom or kernal issue..
It could be a rogue app as well. I do not have any sleep or wake issues. No issues at all im running the near stock rom for us. 3.2
happen to my stock 3.2 A500 too, found some info pointing to wireless, connected wireless router, computers in network etc. Only things i can do to stop it wake up from sleep and stay on, is to disable wireless/airplane mode before sleep.
Hi there, I have this problem; my AT&T GS4 does not use the deep sleep state. I have made some research, and from what I understood, this problem has to be a result of any program that keeps triggering the phone to get awake.
So, I have the phone unlocked, rooted and ALL the sensors off, expect from gsm signal. With titanium back I have uninstalled the programs that I´ll never gonna use (mostly AT&T bloadware) and frozen the ones that I don’t want to use right know, but maybe by deleting them I would get into a problem (like S-Voice) or just because some day I would like to give them a try. Finally, there are the programs that I would like to keep, but I don’t want to let them make any cpu use while I am not using them. I used an application called Greenyfi, a good example of why this program is the best for the last propose, is the use of programs like google maps, in where I do want to use it, but, just when I open the app. Also, I used the app “Autostarts” to prevent applications to start after some events (like startup, state change, etc..)
With all that been said, I am steel not getting deep sleep, in any situation. I´am not saying that my battery life is bad, I think I can get easily 4-5 screen time use. But, by not getting into deep sleep, the phone is allways using the cpu at 384mhz, so the battery goes down in a range of 1.5 to 2 % per hour (10 hours of no use and 20% less battery).
SO, for you to see the problem better. I did a little experiment. Restart the phone, put it into flight mode and let it “sleep” for the night, the results are attached.
PD: Whatsapp isn’t the problem; I can froze it and still 0% deep sleep.
PD2: Sorry for the language, I forgot to change it.
Get BetterBatteryStats app. It'll tell you what's keeping your phone awake. Look for partial wake locks.

ok, I did it, and BBS says that in partial wakelocks there is no major problem (20seg out of 1 hour the worst app). BUT, in kernel wakelocks, shows that "MSM_HSIC_HOST", is using the exact amount of time since the phone was turned on (1 hour). So, it has to be this. I´ve reading a huge thread of many people having a similar problem (mmsm_hsic_host been the process that wakes the phone most, but not using ALL the time, but considerable time (between 50% to 10). I ‘keep reading until I found a solution.

Bro! I am so trying to get my s4 to not go into deep deep sleep, to be able to have a switch or click here button to be able to toggle that option would be the way for me to continue to use unlimited 4g tether because i was told to use hotspot vpn shield to prevent tim lee mobile from sniffing my data to see if i were tethering ! Although the vpn just told me that the application goes in to deep sleep (aka it turns off!) That's right folks the application turns off without you knowing until it's too late, so let see where to go from here. ??

Yes if you have developer mode to stay awake while plugged in and want to turn the screen off at any point just hit the power button to lock/shutoff the screen.

well the hotspot shield vpn by anchors inc. makes thier app shut down when the phone goes into standby said the tech guy today because it still shut off.
so i suppose i need to prevent standby
ok i got to the bottom of this , hotspot shield vpn by anchors inc.are liars , the tether app auto prevents standby and i also i enabled the developer stay awake optiion. it turns out the application will turn off when no data is being sent for sometime and i have a feeling that it is in their favor for whatever reason otherwise the app would have an option to not shut off
now i was looking into getting termenal_ide to ping google every so often say every 3 or 5 minutes ,
i ran it and it was pinging like a mad man , more then once per second , i though i might get blacklisted for a false ddos
