what should i donate for ??
All of the time and sanity someone would have to use to make this possible. It would be pretty awesome though.

Possible in theory, not in reality.
If you really want an android device, perhaps you can only buy one.
Someone would have to hack the boot loader on the N8, Get it stable enough so that it could flash custom roms, Then re-write all the drivers so that they work on Android & then flash Android OS onto the device.
Not saying its not possable but that's a LOT of work for one person to undertake.
Maybe better off selling your N8 & using the funds to buy an Android phone?

i like how strong is the hardware and i love the camera and the HDMI and such things !
as you said it's to much work for one person ..
where can i find a ... team ..
that is ready to make this come true ???
At this point I dont think you wouldn't be able to get a team OR maybe you could try recruiting one on your own (if you are not planning to do the work mentioned above on your own that is).
If not you could concetrate on the first step i.e. hacking the bootloader and then post here? Guess you would have more chances of getting others interest then.
Yeah really would be nice, but unless you find someone willing, and donate alot... not gonna happen in the near future.
Pretty sure you could find an Android phone with most or all of those features. Pay $20 for a metal case

and HDMI ?? Xenon flash ?? AV out ?
surrounded dobly ??
where can i find an android phones with these stats ??
please guys am ..
am just asking for N8 i just want my dream phone as hardware and my favorite OS as software combining to make the best phone ever !
can anyone of you make it real ?? please
It's not going to happen.
Also the Galaxy S already had Android running so the drivers were there, they just needed to be slightly modified for 2.3.
As for the N8, it's never had Android so it pretty much means working with stock Android and reverse engineering everything to work which summarised like that is over-simplified...
It's just not worth the work.

No one is going to take on a project like this. It would be a boat load of work and there's no demand for it.
As for the specs: HMDI, there are Android phones w/ HDMI (EVO for example).
12MP camera and Xenon flash? Are you serious? If you really NEED that kind of firepower maybe you should get a real camera b/c there's no way any amateur needs those specs and no real photographer is going to rely on his CELL PHONE to take pix.
AV out - for audio you can use the headphone jack. For video, seriously, you don't have something better to watch videos on that you need to output from your phone to a TV?
Dolby Surround? Are you effin' kidding me? This doesn't even warrant a response.
These are ridiculous, over-spec'd TOYS! And I'm sure if you poll the majority of the people on this forum you'd see that it's something that's "cool to have" but they would be underutilized. It's fluff to get people to buy their Symbian crap and apparently it worked... And now you're wishing for an Android "system, not phone."
Maybe I'm coming off as rude here but seriously, your Nokia sounded like an impulse buy - you saw the specs and you bought your brick.
Sell it, get an Android phone.
In addition, many people here, including myself, are running custom ROMs and some can't even utilize all of their phones features (HDMI, 4G, etc.) and are perfectly happy with it...
I know how you feel about wanting specific hardware with specific software/firmware (I've been in those situations) but these are massive projects that no one is going to attempt. And if someone does, they're a better man than I...
I'm assuming you're not in the US b/c no one here would force a relic like Nokia/Symbian upon you.. A phone and OS past their prime and I don't get the hype it gets overseas..

First of all, don't say "**** my life" - there's a lot more to life than cell phones and I only know that all too well...
Second, don't get angry at me. I'm nobody to you. Just ignore me and my comments, this is only an internet forum. Take advice with a grain of salt because most likely no one here can help you unfortunately, so they'll just offer up opinions.
Wasn't trying to make you feel guilty, my apologies. But what you're asking for is extremely unlikely and difficult. AND from your OP it does sound like it was an impulse buy BECAUSE the Nokia had a lot of "features" AND you just called Symbian a "fool's Symbian" so you knew what you were getting into.
I'm sorry but there's a lot of people who buy with their hearts, not with their heads and it bites them in the ass.
Had you done proper research (and maybe you did, I don't know) but I think you would have ended up w/ an Android.
Almost 2 years ago I was moments away from buying an iPhone but I decided to give Android a chance because I did A LOT of reading and research about it and I was convinced that in the long run it would prove more valuable to me than an iPhone. Now almost 2 years later, I'm so glad I did all that reading and research b/c I would never buy an iPhone now! Just a comparison...
And as for the hardware of that Nokia, I'm still not convinced all that stuff is necessary. I have HDMI - never used it. I have 4G - never used it even though it's available here in New York City. I have an 8MP camera - most I ever use (and rarely) is 5MP b/c 8MP is needlessly huge.
Sell your phone on eBay - I've always had success selling used phones there for good money. And you said it's only 1 month old and a popular, feature-rich model.
Good luck...
I´m not going to enter in the childlish discussion of wether you should get or not an android phone for that. The n8 has its pros and cons against android. It has a great hardware but it has symbian... god knows that if it had android that would be my actual phone... but nokia´s pride made me join the other side
Coming back to what you ask. I don´t see it possible in the near future, but if the n8 had come with maemo or meego instead of symbian probably there would be people working on it.
I would suggest you to go to the NITdroid forum to ask, just google nitdroid. They ported android for the n800 and n900(both nokia maemo devices). I have not checked that forum in a while, maybe they are working on it already, maybe they are not even thinking about it. But if you want to talk to a team that might consither doing it i think that is your best shot.
...oy.... listen mate.... no disrespect but you are the one not getting it.... everyone here is being perfectly reasonable and is actually trying to give you the best advice they can.... I'll try and break things down though....
I can definitely relate when you say that you love a piece of hardware but wish the OS was different...I was in the exact same boat with my Nokia E71... LOVED the phone itself...but Symbian was just horrid.... Here is why people are giving you "mean replies"....
What you are asking for is *technically* possible.... but it is a LOT of work.... As described above you'd have to make a stable bootloader, flash the rom and then re-write all of the drivers.... this takes time, effort and money (it's not unlikely that you'd probably brick a few N8s in the process).... The problem is that right now you are more or less the only one interested in this project.... Other projects like running Android on the iPhone are coming along because there is a huge market of iphone users who would like to play with android on their phone as well as a market of android users who like apple hardware... some of these people are devs who want this to happen bad enough that they are willing to contribute their time. Other people who are not as technically inclined but have a bit of extra cash are contributing by donating to official projects who have showed progress. The key difference between the Android on iPhone and the Android on N8 project is that there is a demand for the iPhone project. If there was a 10 page thread full of people saying "hey listen I'm interested in this".... something might happen.... but even with the iPhone development, its a *slow* process. In a nutshell the people who do have the skill to pull this off are limited, and you are asking them to devote hours and hours of their time into a project they aren't interested in for no monetary or any other type of compensation other than maybe a Thank You.
The reason people were able to port Gingerbread onto the Samsung so quickly is because for starters, the Samsung was already designed to run an Android OS so a lot of the groundwork was already done. The hardware was made to be compatible with (and more or less) function with the stock OS. Devs have already had experience working with both the OS and the device. It's kinda like trying to fit an engine into a car. Is it possible to squeeze a new BMW M3 engine into a Volvo? Sure..... But it's much much easier to squeeze it into lets say an older BMW 3 Series.... especially if the mechanics you are talking to specialize in BMWs...
As for people giving you flack for the features... Most of them do have a point... The HDMI out is a valid feature someone might want for various reasons, but other android phones have this feature as well...same for the FM tuner.... As for the camera, 12MP is great on paper... but here is the thing. 1) Unless you are blowing these images up to poster size, a 5 or 8 mp camera will do just as well.... I have a Nexus One and I love the pics it takes.... megapixels start becoming somewhat irrelevant after a certain point because the increase in pixels doesn't necessarily improve the quality that much. It becomes more of a spec for manufactures to advertise. Things such as lense size and the size of the sensor have a much greater input on the quality of your image (the bigger the lense the more light it lets in, the bigger the size of the CMOS ship the more sensetive the camera is). These are 2 things phones struggle with because of physical limitations... there is only so much you can squeeze into a phone. Would you see a difference between a 12mp DSLR and an 8mp DSLR? of course.... an 8mp phone or a 12mp phone? not so much....
Solid construction is always a winner.... nothing wrong with loving a phone for that... its one of the reasons why I loved my E71....
As for the "dolby" sound.... you run into a similar problem as the camera... its more of a "on paper" thing.... the reality is that the mics that go into these phones are alright for talking, but are nowhere *near* the quality you would get (or need) for a legitimate camera. The mics aren't tuned, and due to the tiny diaphrams you pretty much get no frequency response on the low end. Also if by Dolby you mean the phone records in surround sound... that is a whole other nightmare... you start getting into a phasing issues and what not... if it just means that it's certified by Dolby... it mostly just means that Nokia paid Dolby some change, got them to maybe tweak things a bit but for the most part just bought the rights to slap their logo on the phone... you *might* here marginally better recordings... key words are might and marginally...
As for the flash.... people usually curse and blink repeatedly if my N1s flash decides to go off... most phones today have more than adequet flashes for the cameras they are equipped with.
So to sort of wind this essay up... we're not trying to be assholes.... you asked a question...
can porting Android onto the N8 be done? yes....
is it worth the effort? unless demand skyrockets or you are willing to hire a dev and pay him for his work.... no
Than what are your options? Either do the best you can with Symbian until your contract runs out and/or you can afford a new phone.... or look at your budget, sell the N8 and pick up a droid.
People simply gave you their opinions as to what the best option is (which the overwhelming majority thinks is selling and getting a new phone), and why they believe this would be a good purchase. (ie: why a lot of the "features" on the N8 aren't really "features"). Hope this helped. Good luck. Peace,
L
Just my two cents, from a guy who came to Android from Symbian.
Maybe you should have asked for help before you bought the phone. It would have been a lot easier to help you at that point. It's not that people here do not want to help you, but there is not a lot that we can help you with. Answer this, what exactly are you wishing to gain from getting Android on your phone. If its a better UI try SPB Mobile Shell, it definitely made my Symbian 1 (5800 Xpressmusic) phone more bearable. If it's usability, there are many apps to help you out, and the numbers are slowly growing. I really can't see what would make this project worth the effort. Symbian 3 is not a very bad OS, although it's not one of the best.
Also, if you are going to ask for help you have to be open to suggestions and you would definitely have to give more details as to what you want to gain; there is always more than one way to handle problem. We all are trying to help but you have to help us help you, and stop getting upset because we give reasons why it's not possible and/or worth it.
This thread is hilarious.

Hello, so after seeing the reviews and videos of the much anticipated "Nexus One" phone or should I say "BEAST" of a phone we as G1 or Dream users are left to wonder, What do Android and HTC have for us in the future do they think about us? It seems that with better and faster more agile processors being released to such phones like the Nexus, future ROMs or mods will be too much for our limited G1's. It used to be if you wanted to run customized Roms then only you decided wether "Hard Soft SPL" "partitioning or not partitioning" and etc, now it seem that will be the only way to run these sick out of this world roms in the coming days, in the future of Android. Android 2.1 makes me think of the possibilities of technology in our century but also of the budget of our pocket money between deciding necessity or commodity. I saw a developer asking for help or donations to help him get a phone for test. I for one woul love to be able to donate but as it is economy status is "Force Close" in Androids Terms. Please comment on this if you'd like, Just a thought.
Everyone running CM could probably donate $0.50 and it would be enough to get him a Nexus One.
The only thing that isn't future proof with the DREAM is the douchebags at HTC failing to provide required source or at LEAST give us new proprietary binaries for our hardware.
The device doesn't have to be super duper newest latest greatest thing to run a new set of software. Just because GN1 happens to have the equivalent of an AMD Radeon R600 GPU (yes, it is even an AMD GPU built on that same architecture) doesn't mean that what Dream has can't chug through the work! We *have* a 3D GPU to handle the required visual effects. Maybe not as smooth, but it WILL DO IT! Compiz runs at 1600x1200 great on a crappy Intel GPU, which is architecturally INFERIOR to the GPU in the GN1!!! And Compiz does the same kind of effects! But we only need to worry about 320x480.
Android has and does run on a retardedly out of date Palm Treo 650. Not so good, but just to note, the difference between a Treo 650 and an HTC Dream is MUCH MUCH greater than the difference between an HTC DREAM and a GN1!
IT CAN BE DONE.
It HAS been done.
But the problem is with HTC! They don't have the same kind of respect for open source as AMD has (providing all required programming documentation, and quite a bit of labor, for open source drivers for GPUs up to and including R800).
The solution:
We need to reverse engineer (parts of) the proprietary binaries! And starting with the parts needed for the CAMERA.
We could possibly make this part functional by writing something as simple as a wrapper library to adapt the OLD camera library to meet the requirements of the NEW AOSP.
The compromise:
Maybe not all of the advanced coolness will work out, but that is the great thing about source code... it may not be necessary! Some stuff can be dumbed down to work.

How's that going to help with DREAM?
.50 cents?
If everyone gave Steve a penny then he could buy 2 Nexus Ones and a new snowboard. Everyone that uses CM, parts of CM, Recovery Image??? That has got to be at this point the Majority of Dream\Magic users. I wish there was a way to count.
Donate to Steve if you use anything of his. He is a great help to the community.

Guess we make the future.
With the source for the basic android freely available, it's up to Dream / G1 users to write their own future after the first 2 years are up.
If you're not a developer, then maybe this would be worth learning to do.....if not for this phone, then for your next one.
I'm thinking that in the 21st century, the truly free person will be able to grow their own food, build their own house...and write their own software.
At this point, not being able to write software is beginning to feel like not being able to read and write. Always relying on someone else to do it for you....and having NO CLUE if you can't do it for yourself. I don't like that feeling. I've started learning how to program: C / C++ and Java. Don't want to be useless or dependent.

Hey all: what happens when you put the obsolete camera binary in a 2.0 image? Is it an unknown symbol error? If it is, then it might be easier to deal with than the general assumption!
Cyanogen already has the nexus one. he said hes not totally dropping support for g1/32B but I would expect the frequency of his updates will go down.
My one huge question in regards to the N1...
How is the battery?
Because the G1 is a wonderful phone... when you can use it.
Anyone have any idea how the N1's battery compares to G1 and iPhone?

Coming from the g1 to nexus one as far as battery life is concerned is like night and day imo. When i wiped my phone on g1 i reinstalled all my apps i use, 96 total in market and on sdcard and had less than 40% battery left. I did the same with the nexus one to test the battery and when i was done it was down to 87%

See what does it tell you about the importance of battery life... that I see the Nexus One with all its shiny-ness and I think I'd like one... but not until hearing this comparison do I feel like "OMG NEED ONE NOW GIMME GIMME GIMME!"?
Haha..... G1's battery was its major weakness. I'd love to have a very similar phone with a GOOD battery.
I saw someone say that Nexus one wasn't able to sync the Calendar. Is this true? It may have just been a misleading statement... and I'm hoping so because I can't imagine Google making a newer, better phone that can't do a simple thing like keep your Gcalendar like G1 can.
Can you get all the same apps on Nexus one since it's Android?

My N1 can sync with calendar no problems. Some apps you cannot use yet because they do not support the newer Android 2.1 OS. Most apps have no problem with it. Thsoe that dont work will no doubt be updated by the developers once the Android 2.1 SDK will be released.
Yeah... I'm gonna want one. I will not get one until May more than likely because my contract with Tmobile won't run out til then but... that'd be alright. It gives me time to save up for it.
I wonder if you can get the n1 for contract price with Tmobile if you just sign upf or their $40/month unlimited web service.
Anyone else heard of this: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google Mobile/thread?tid=7154dabda82d872e&hl=en ?
Sounds like win to me...
Does anyone no if the apps on the Nexus one save to sd now?
no they do not. Google has confirmed though that in a future update they will.
Hey everyone i know that there has been about 20 of these posts and threads about ppl hating or being upset with the HD2, but i feel that i have to post this.
*
For a few months now I have been eagerly waiting for HTC to release a USA version of the HD 2 before conforming to apple or android well the dream came through and T-Mobile gets one will all these goods HSDP+ which gives you super fast 3G which is not in my area as of yet but waiting for it to get here but back to the goodies movies really cool apps and preloaded games I have had HTC phones all my live no other phone. But this phone seems so great lack the WP7S which now dropped the S LOL but I could care less for 7 for mobile. What I’m getting to is this phone is a beast with has a lot of potential but the sad truth is that you have to tune this phone for almost every thing to work but then you’ll get bugs regardless what you do its like buying a Ferrari enzo and having to tweak it that just does not make any sense to me. no matter what hardware you have from HTC its always going to miss one thing team work Micro Soft makes this great software that I know can do great things but because there are so many manufactures making devices for them with so many different hardware specs you’ll have issues left and right no matter what you. Hence why there are the Windows the market place and applications for windows mobile sucks so bad developers like Gameloft, EAGames, Capcom and others like fandango and 100s of others don’t take windows mobile devices so serious. i hate to say this but apples device specs don’t match up to what to what windows devices do but because its one device one hardware once manufacture there will always be great games and applications for apple iphone/ipod/ Ipad whatever. i cant expect XDA to make me happy with fixing and making a dedicated team or get other nationwide Developers to see the hd2 for what it is and can do. XDA has too many damn phones to tweak for the world. the HD2 is a great phone for big windows mobile users. i can say im a big htc/widows user but you cant tell me thay sometimes you wish you didnt have to tweak your phone unleast you reallly Have to. too many many companys are in the cell phone game with the same os on them. We will never see the full potentional because its DOA im tired of the rom flashing game. im not moving to apple because they suck and jobs can you know what as for android there in the same page as windows mobile too many wanna bees aka manufactures. ill keep my hd2 because i support htc and windows till thw day i die but know this phone broke my heart like a beautiful chick with a 10 sec memory bank no matter what she wont get it lol if you dont like my thoughts im sry i wasted your time
post you thoughts and comments here maybe some pointers and hits on what to do and if the tmo stock rom is just complete otter garbage
Uhmmm I have a comment.
My brain now hurts from trying to read your ramblings of confusion. Try using capital letters, breaking up your run on sentences, and for gods sake try proof reading your post before throwing it out there for all to see.
Now having said that. They are two different OSs with two different people in mind as users. The iPhone is a child's toy as far as I'm concerned. It's apps are made for 13 year olds that want a phone filled with mostly useless apps. On the other hand you have Windows Mobile which is for people who want to be productive with their time. Maybe get something accomplished while still out of the office. Now I'm not saying the the iPhone doesn't have it share of useful apps it's like I said though two different user bases.
Having a phone with enough power to get almost anything done is nice but yes as usual with any Window product you will have to tweak it to get it to your liking. I'm thankful I have the ability to do this out of the box without having to jailbreak my phone or pay for it. I have not a problem I couldn't solve so far with the phone by coming here and searching the vast amount of information and knowledge.
If you feel better after rambling then it was worth reading your post.
sry about the really bad post lol i didnt have time to proof read it at all had like 10 mins to type it on my phone battery was dying should have just waited now i look like a fool lol sry man
try listing some of the problems that you have been experiencing. a lot of other hd2 owners that i know in person seem to be having the same complaints; freezing, lagging, screen blackout, etc.
this website has helped tremendously in helping with such issues. simple things like using the task manager and a program called "free ram" help the hd2 run smoothly.
on top of that, i found that i can tweak the way i want the phone to operate by turning off certain widgets to save battery life. i also found some great programs such as s2u2 for custom lockscreens, bsb tweaks and co0kie's home tab to make the hd2 run the way i want it to. i.e., enabling pinch ande zoom to skyfire and IE. enabling rotation to google maps, etc.

Who needs periods, commas, or any punctuation marks anyway
It's that not I don't understand the issues but whats the sense of making a post if it makes no sense. Take a breath slow down and explain your actual issues. Many of them can simple be solved by using a rom that actually works. I have yet to use a stock rom that works right out of the box. Load a custom rom and it's a whole new phone. Yes custom roms are not without problems but most times they're little compared to the bloat that comes with stock roms.
Ok one i get random device.exe fail and other programs fail giving me that Microsoft error ...exe fail. For instances Opera, FPSECE 10, Morph Gear and the Camera gives me the same .exe Microsoft error. Also the music tab takes ages to load my music from the memory card . One more thing even after using Chainfires 3D drivers 1.1 and TX 3d Performance update than preloaded game Ferrari GT evolution lags so bad man. All of these problems repeat their self even after a hard reset. Oh and Chill with the spelling and all this I’m puzzled from reading my post I’m pretty sure I made my self clear onto why it looks that way ether help me or just keep it moving.
Try lossing the stock rom and that will solve a good bit of your issues. Also might want to make sure you have .NetFramework 3.5 installed.
Simple. First, lose the stock rom. Next, move the racing game from the sd card to the phone memory. Tada.
There are much bigger problems than the easily solvable problems you mention (my sig comes to mind). No reason for you to complain!
Again wisdom, the problem lies with the OS and Hardware, i dont think HTC and WM will ever take advantage of the specific hardware in our devices for the sole reason that there too many differences. Why do you think the iphone runs so smooth...well think about it an OS designed for its proprietary hardware/software, the OS is taking full advantage of the hardware's efficiency. But with proprietary software comes a drawback, developers need to redesign there software to run on that specific device, this is where i think WM wins because its OS architecture has been out for so long being its universal capabilities with hardware where else apple likes to stick to there own s**t, well thats dandy and all but it doesn't work all that well with developers that started off with windows for so many years, so now we need new developers to start fresh. look at all the apps not on the marketplace that have been out for years..apple doesn't come close, the marketplace just makes it easyier for our users today to find what they need, "Competition". please correct me if im wrong but this is my view. I always thought about this for example take your PC's hardware running Windows and tell a game developer to design a game to your specific hardware and OS, just imagine the performance difference to a universal platform game, thats why alot of games designed for an apple computer run most of the time 50% to 100% better then the same game on windows pc without having to upgrade your videocard... Im still waiting for the day that the hardware in our HTC WM devices are matched perfectly with the correct/proper drivers! My HD2 which you bought for me is fast as hell, but just imagine how much faster it can be...This is just my 2 cents.

Hey it was just one more suggestion to help solve his problem. Nothing like speaking clearly and being able to get the point across. Do you like to talk to somebody who mumbles under their breath all day. Do you like to talk to somebody who incoherently babbles? I doubt you do. No different here, I have no problem helping people, I have no problem trying to figure out what somebody is saying but when it's a complete paragraph of gibberish there is not much I can do. I could understand if he was some where in Europe and English was not his primary language.

JUST STFU!!!!!!!!
At least this thread is good for one thing, getting a good laugh.
And yes I do hate Apple with a passion. You like it so much go buy an iPhone and STFU yourself. I never said every app was childish or made for children I simply said they are marketed more towards children or should I say the simple minded. Hence it is a child's toy.
It seems to me that wm6.x is a dying OS.
I love my hd2 but i am now becoming concerned that no one is developing for it, especially in the games department.
Even adobe have dropped flash support saying that wm6.x lacks the API's they need.
With no official wm7 upgrade, we will all be relying on clever people here to get wm7 or android on are HD2's
All in all I feel very disappointed. Anyone else feel the same way?

Yup, didn't expect the HD2 to get obsolete so fast especially considering the amount we paid for it. Really hoped HTC would do something to keep the HD2 feeling fresh during its 2 year lifespan, but they obviously don't care about costumer service at all.
As I understand it both Samsung and HTC are lacking in this department and then people wonder why people choose the iPhone over competing phones.
If it weren't for XDA I would have given up on WM much earlier.
HD2 is ,imho, a "business" platform which would have great gaming potential.
And yes, I agree that both MS and HTC seem not to care about existing customers - they have not understood the concept of doing "iBusiness". Means, understanding the own customers and offering products and solutions which are requested by those important stakeholders.
As the posting before mine mentioned, Samsung is not better at all - they never understood customers. And I know what I am talking about...
I think even if WP7 is going more into the "iBiz" direction, it will not really succeed the way Apple did. Android will fill there. But, you never know. MS will try to move some XBox success over to the mobile platform...
In the sum, I knew about all this when I bought my HD2. In the past, I rarely used any device for more than 2 years - in this case, probably summer 2011, with iPhone 5G and Android "3rd generation", I will take my next choice... until then, I am perfectly fine with my HD2, thanks to xda.

Yes i am afraid thats is true..you have been uber-mugged...Thank the god there is xda...and quite honestly, here you can find anything you could want(more or less) that MSFT or HTC would even sweat getting for their customers..HTC being the lesser of the 2 evil since they built this beat and beauty at the same time AND covering so effectively the visual hiddeousness of 6.x platform (visually wise)..You are not on your own, you have the greatest community ever by your side but fact remains , your purchase alone was a money drain (if you do exclude xda and take it as a winmo phone)
i bought hd2 few months ago knowing now what i ignored then about windows 6,.5 dying i would never have bought it but thanks to xda people they gave it the extra mile that was lacking and made it look way more beautiful ,like co0kies tabs, 3G switch in comm manager, and the most beautiful skins from diniks ,what else would you want ?
this sound awfull... cell phone brands leaving their customers on their own or leiving them to a community they dont control..... (don't miss understand me, XDA rocks)
But that kind of brand "policies"... S*ck
:\
Even a cheap chinese cell phone like "Ciphone" has it's own community to help users, give updates and apps. Cifans forum. I had the c6 and that community did a great job for me. HTC did a lot less...
Its true, I do love my HD2 very much, but if it wasn't for XDA Developers, I really would have gone for a android device instead. I am just pleased that custom ROMs, Cookie's Home Tab and MaxManila are doing so well. The reasons for not providing WP7 as an upgrade are quite poor and is something that HTC and MS can easily sort out together but are just deciding not to - I reckon anyway.

The main reason that they dont is that they have set very high gaming standards for the wp7 devices for the xbox live plans they got and snapdragon's fill rate is very low to fit their needs.

I can understand that. Fair enough, well now I am about to flash a new ROM, I really want to try messing with MaxManila's new interface. Yeah, the HD2 may never see a fully working WP7, but as long as I have the HD2 - I don't think I'll ever get bored of messing with WM6.5/6.5.3/etc, flashing ROMs, and so on. haha. Talking about the gaming standards, I am looking forward to what developers come up with.
This is true and I hate that no sites have had the balls to post about this fact. It's just something both companies I guess feel they DON'T have to take care of and don't feel it's any loss anger a few customers about this issue. The hardware issue is such bull**** in my opinion. This isn't the first time there were phones with different hardware. Simply make some apps for certain phones and obviously the higher end apps will support the higher end phones. The games has been a big issue, but nothing really to care about. FPSECE covers most of that. As far as XDA while I do love the site and it does develop a lot of new and unique things for the HD2 recently it's mostly been custom UIs that are just flooding the HD2 section.

snapdragon 1ghz cpu is the miniumum standard for Wp7 isnt it?
I would have thought the HD2 opengles was fast enough....oc better drivers
would help as chainfire has allready shown...xda to the rescue again
My point is this is the fastest cpu /phone ive ever used, its capable of far better games perfomance, but as winmo 6.5 phone its never going to see any
games such as gameloft ashphalt 5
There are several games out there that should be updated such as Cod2 and thps2, these would sell to the HD2 comunity and i doubt it would be that difficult or expensive for EA and the like to get these older tittles working

Have you used an xperia x2 lately? It is slow as a snail compared with the HD2.
It shouldn't be long until they (yes the xda gods) port us android. Windows is and will always be rubbish.
Look on the bright side, the EVO is coming so soooon.
HTC's total failure
not only HTC let us down but make us to feel as idiots that just financed their stupid OS selection by buying HD2. Personally i am wont participate in other their action, will trow away HTC HD2 (and just because the WM...otherwise i like it!) and will never ever buy another HTC product. For now the market is full with alternatives.
NO, because anyone who has done research before buying the phone would already know this. I did, and i bought it anyway, because xda will always help when ms and htc wont.
If you look through other HTC phone models on XDA, you will find that very often when the forum has come up with good ideas, and there has been a lot of interest in them, HTC (who read this forum), take it on board and add the idea to their official updates.
So if a large percentage of HD2 owners say they are dumping their HD2 phones, why should HTC bother with updates?
If you do not like your HD2 phone, or MS software, hard luck, don't complain to XDA. The forum did not twist your arm to buy it.
You would not buy a car or computer, without checking its performance first, so why buy a phone without checking its performance first.

I did my research there but I bought my HD2 when I read somewhere it can be upgraded to WP7. A few weeks after I bought it, well...the bad news came up.
I really like the looks and feel of the HD2 but I'm wishing HTC can give us end users an option which OS to use. I'd grab Android anytime. But hey, in a sense, MS let me down but not as much as HTC did.
ofc till xda is here and members have free time to solve problems occurring because of WM and HTC carelessness.
and pls can u explain here how u mek market research on usage of totally new phone on the market. (if u are in the 1st buyers list). i am just curious!
and still believe that companies must have responsibilities to their customers!
Hello! I've currently got an HTC Desire and I'm not that happy with Android. I'm tired of the laggy, inconsistant and boring UI of both Sense and stock Android. I've had an iPod Touch and I've got an iPad and I'm a big fan of iOS, but I want to try something new.
I've been reading about WP7 a lot and it looks very interesting, I've also tried different WP7 phones in stores and I fell in love with the smoothness and consistant Metro UI.
The phone that I'm thinking of at the moment is the HD2, I think that it would be a good choice for me because it is able to run a various number of platforms (I like modding my phone and trying new stuff). So I've got a few questions about the phone:
The phone is almost 2 years old, is it hardware good enough to meet todays and tomorrow's requirements?
How is the screen of the HD2 compared to the Desire's (WVGA, 3,7", AMOLED)? Does multi-touch gestures work well? Is it dual-touch or does it support more than two fingers?
Is Spotify available for WP7 yet?
Are any key features missing in the WP7 port for HD2 (such as camera, headphone jack or WiFi not working?)?
What other platforms than Android, WM 6.5 and WP7 does the HD2 run? I saw that there are sections for Ubuntu and MeeGo here at XDA, are those platforms stable enough for daily use? How well does Android run?
Should I buy a used one or a new one?
How is the battery life?
What are your opinions? Would you buy a HD2 today? Opinions and recommendations about other phones are welcome as well!
Thanks in advance
1. I'd say yes. It might get a little more outdated when two core or even quad core processors roll out. One the other hand, there is no operating system that could use more power than HD2 has.
2. Screen is the weakest part of HD2, AMOLED technology is a lot better in terms of picture quality as well as power saving. I'd say it is just OK.
3. No idea.
4. No idea.
5. HD2 can currently run WM6.5, WP7 and Android - all stable and all working. Meego and Ubuntu are rather proof of concepts and not useful for daily use.
6. Now this is up to you. If you're short of money, go for used one. If you can afford a new one, get a new one.
7. Depends how much you use the phone, what operating system you're running etc. I managed to get about 4 days of standby(stock battery!) on Android with automatic internet connection and mail syncing every 30 minutes and 3G off. I consider it pretty good for a smartphone.
However, the most important thing about this phone is the number of supporters here at XDA. There are hundreds of ROMs to choose from, you can try a new one every day And well, I do not think there are many phones that can multiboot two systems(there are some that can handle different systems, but each change requires reflash).
I am a person who can afford any phone any time. If someone told me that there is a HD2 with amoled screen, quad core cpu and 4 gigs of ram and (it still can multiboot) for $2000, I'd buy it right away. Back to reality - in my opinion there is no better phone out there.
Well, it's hardware is now pretty old compared to most of the phones out there. But it still works I haven't seen any place where I'd be like oh crap I wish I had another phone this is just too slow.. Never.
Screen = Big Let Down. You won't be all that happy with the screen rest assured
Multi-touch works well but not so well in WP7. I believe it is dual touch.
Spotify is available on WP7 last I checked it will take you a spotify wp7 google search.
Meego, Ubuntu not for daily use development has as far as I remember become extremely slow.
Key feature missing in WP7 for HD2 is camera gives green tint when used with flash. And imo camera quality is never as good with android or wp7 than with WM6.5 for hd2.
Take a used one from craigslist. Should be good enough.
Battery life not as good due to the aforementioned screen and 1250 mAh battery.
But, I still personally love my HD2 and won't part with it till the development from this community stops and I honestly believe WP7 would surely work perfect on the HD2 in the near future. Peace
Thanks for the responses! The only thing that makes me doubt atm is the screen.. Really love the blacks on the Desire's AMOLED display, but I guess that I'll get used to the HD2's display.
Anyone done the jump from AMOLED/S-LCD/S-AMOLED to LCD?
Kinda.. My bro has a Galaxy S another has a S2 a friend has Sensation.. So seen many pretty nice screens must admit my hd2 looks pretty sad in front of those displays.. But, when I show them Android CM7, Sense, WP7 and all.. They all say please tell us how to do it
Go get an hd2 it will be the best thing that ever happened to you cell phone wise
I won't make another topic for the same question, so I just reply to this one. I hope it won't call as digging up...
After XDA threads answering 90% of my questions, I still have one:
I will be able to afford an HD2 in March-April 2012. That said, I don't want to end up thinking "Gosh, why did I buy it?" after 3-4 months; is this phone still able to survive another year of support here, at XDA? I don't have enough cash to buy another $400 phone after half a year, so it is quite important.
Thanks in advance.

to be honest, it is a guess at this time. i mean in 6 months from now, there might be some new amazing things on the market. i would just come back and check in 5 months or so. and nicely done, not starting a new thread!
If i were u i wont even think of getting this phone.
Ya in 6 months from not there will be more new stuff out there. So talking of the current market i think compared to other newer phones the HD2 is really good. 4.3 inch display, capability to rum multiple OS's. And it's blazing fast in wp7 and android
BUT...
Just google the number of HD2 users suffering with the same fault it has. I'm a victim of the same and i feel like dashing this crap on the floor. I'm sick and tired of this. Even after performing a mtty still it restarts.
So..
Either u have to be really like others to get a good phone without any faults or you too will be suffering like the rest of the HD2 owners. WHY TAKING THAT CHANCE? IF I WERE YOU I WOULD NOT EVEN IF IT CAN RUN 1000 OS's..
I am really happy with my HD2 & it has been faultless for me on my personal setup WM6.5.x, but if you are likely to be going Android you are better looking at newer devices that are native Android.
Most hardware failures & bugs are on those users running Multi OSs or Nand Droid/W7 .

Those of you suffering WP7 restarts/freeze etc, get yourselves a new SD Card. There's plenty of data on this in the WP7 forum.
Thanks for answering, it really means a lot to me.
Ok, time to explain my history (which is a long and complicated one):
I am 15 years old, so I just have to rely on my parents' money. I got my first mobile when I was... 9? Something like that. I remember, how everyone in the school was excited by color screens! And l was proud of having a camera, even though the quality of the photos was pretty bad. But, hey, it was a camera! In the mobile!
In 2007 I got my first "smartphone". It was Nokia 6120 classic with Symbian. But I was scared about losing the warranty, so I didn't do much with it (that is, I didn't "hack" the Symbian, which is still nothing compared to modding Android). Still, I was happy with it for 2 years.
But then comes 2009 and "touchscreen time". God, how the prices of those phones dropped then! I bought a Samsung Corby. Yeah, it was a downgrade from Symbian, but at least I was able to get used to the touchscreen. I sold it in March 2011 for an acceptable price.
And here comes the "smartphone age". I bought my Galaxy Spica in July 2011. I know, probably You haven't heard of this phone, but in Poland and Russia it is quite popular. I bought it simply because of the mods - right now it is considered "The slowest phone ever" on some Polish Android forum, but, guess what? I am happy with it. It is running CM6 right now and is currently lying on my left, charging happily.
If I'm happy - why should I replace it? Well, first of all, the battery got klilled. One day I can go through 8 lessons and the phone will still be at 100%, and next day, without even touching it - bam, drops to 52%. I know, replace the battery and so on, and so on. But it really sometimes makes me mad when I have to do a "battery reset" for the third time, because it won't unlock...
I remember how I was scared before the first root of my Spica... And it went great, start to finish! Everything goes great when You follow the guides, that's what I learned in the past few months. No phone can be compared to HD2 when it comes to modding (at least IMHO), and it gives you the "WOW" factor among your friends, hehe! Nothing better then coming to a group of people showing off their 199$ Android phone and showing them the HD2's dual-boot!
What really made me excited about the HD2 is not only a modders paradise it offers, but also the wonderful support here. Heck, the HD2 Android board has more posts than most other phones section added up! And more, and more posts are coming up everyday. I would really like to have, like, 4 smartphones in my house - Android, iPhone, WP7 and probably another Android... But I just don't have the money for it. (*blames his country for its poor wages*) I do not demand every new version of Android or WP7 being ported to HD2 (because it's just too much), but I'd be happy with, let's say, one-two next major versions of Android and the next major version of WP7.
In one sentence: I definitely enjoy modding everything, I love the big choice of ROMs available here and I just hope the development doesn't stop on Mango and Gingerbread - if it's so: HD2, here I come!
If You really read the whole story (written in a very poor English - sorry, I'm a native Polish speaker), then congrats, and I hope You will be able to answer my question: Will HD2 as a multi-OS phone satisfy my needs, which are not connected to display or dual-core, but tot the software only? And sorry for the chaotic post, I shouldn't have replied in the midnight. ^^
Get one. I broke mine and am currently looking for another HD2. I could go get the new GSII but I don't really want it.

Ok, that is enough for me, I am going for it... After I get the money of course.
BTW: @stepthehen: I've read the second story before and that's why I asked - if this phone has gone through two years and can mean so much for people...
It is a great phone & if the price is right then still a trenendous bit of kit.
The flip side : if you are not likely to want WM6.5.x or multi-boot & are paying high end price then it is not the best option.

My mum says it is quite expensive, but, hey! Many phones nowadays have similar, if not worse, specs, but they are being sold with a higher price tag, simply because "they're new".
And I do want the multi-boot and I do want to play with OSes. Actually it's my #1 reason. ^^
Is possible change my O.S WP7.5 ..??? .. i like android.. please helpme !!
Bro, do you want a ferrari with lamborghini motor? Why? Maybe you should sell Omnia and buy a Galaxy S, but i can believe you bought a WP desiring putting android os, its a shame this...

Go jump off a cliff. Please!
Or use your remaining single brain cell to realise maybe you should sell your Omnia7 and get an Android for whatever reason.

Sorry dude but it's not even possible to boot Linux on WP7 handsets yet, let alone boot into a usable version of Android. It might happen in the future but it will take a very long time, drivers need to be developed and it does indeed take a lot of work - probably too much for the Omnia7.
If you really want to use Android, move to an Android handset good luck to ye.

ok.. thanks man.. i believe.. osama bin laden can helpme in this.
Lighten up....
Jeez..... I just came from a similar thread in the Development section asking the question about Android on the Omnia7.
This forum used to feel like a place to come to ask innocent questions and we used to get reasonable answers, whether the idea was possible or not.
Now we seem to have the school bullies, all grown up and becoming XDA Senior Members.
I too was caught up in the WP7 24 month contract fiasco with a Wndows7 phone (Omnia7) that's seen no movement from Microsoft for ages. I'd love to buy an Android top of the line phone (SS2), but £500 for an Android phone with a year to go on the WP7 contract? So it makes sense to ask about Android on the Omnia7, right?
I bought an Orange San Francisco 2, headed over to Modaco, an hour later I had an unlocked, unbranded, clean Android phone to use with my year left SIM on the WP7 provider. Not everyone can afford to do this. That's why they come to you.
I read a thread over at Modaco written by an ex-XDA developer who spoke of the vibe this site has now. I'm still a little shocked to find he/she was right.
If any of you feel self important enough, then flame away. For those of you that want answers to your questions without the brow beating, there are lots of other forums out there.
Peace

Why to shame...... See HD2.... It has an ICS update (unofficial)!
Its not necessary to have android update to every phone... But omnia has a goof hardware!!!

No, it doesn't make sense. You bought in to a closed platform, and granted you have a brain, you knew your contract would last for 24 months.

The OP DID get a reasonable answer. Why in gods name would he buy Omnia if he wanted android, with Galaxy S available? It a pretty stupid thing to do, and pointing out the stupidity of that act is justified.

This whole paragraph makes no sense whatsoever. What are you trying to say? You can't upgrade a phone's hardware! And hw is not microsofts responsibility.

The thing is, WP was NEVER number one i HW. Android was much further along all the time. People who buy WP do so because of the OS. Wanting than to change that OS is ridiculous. If you invest hundreds or thousands of dollars (counting subscriptions) in something, SOME beforehand information should be necessary, no?

Of course I knew it was a 24 month contract!! But I didn't know it would go virtually unsupported by MS/Samsung!! I bought a Win7 phone mainly for work, when Android support for the ever evolving MSOffice format was shaky.
I had a Win6.1 HTC Touch Diamond2 a while ago, which, through THIS site, I was able to dual-boot with Android. With your attitude, would this be possible now??
'....and granted you have a brain', ..... yet another sarcastic throwaway bully irrelevance...

... it's obvious from the OP's question, he didn't want Android when he bought the WP7 phone. Me personally, after moving from a relatively open Win6.1/6.5 system, I was shocked by the Apple style Win7 lockdown ....

Where do you get this from?? READ THE MESSAGE!! This is nothing to do with phone hardware. I just knew there'd be someone to come to show me the way.

THIS whole paragraph makes no sense whatsoever. As I said in a previous reply:
'I had a Win6.1 HTC Touch Diamond2 a while ago, which, through THIS site, I was able to dual-boot with Android. With your attitude, would this be possible now??'.....
Look, if you're as old as me, you'll remember the Cosworth engine. When the engine was first unveiled, every man & his dog, at least thought, about dropping a Cosworth engine into anything from a Mini to a MiniBus. Whether immediately evident or not, the possibility was explored, sometimes very successfully. Lots of nay sayers were proved wrong, then as now.....
I liken Android to that Cosworth engine. If the AMENABLE geniuses over at XDA Car Development held my hand, damn, I'd sure as hell give it a go, squeezing a Cosworth engine into my Skoda
So put down the gun, son. This ain't no fight, just someone asking a question or two...
Peace
WP is way more secure than Android or iOS is hence one of the reason it is so hard to put another OS on it on top of the need of individual drivers....you can't compare Windows Mobile(essential the Android of back in the day) and Windows Phone it was basically a total rewrite of the system and WP8 will do it again.
Underdog vs Overdog....
Understood chicagolive.
I think the OP thought, as do I, that most 'smartphones' nowadays are much like PCs. A base system built with the necessary hardware to drive it's peripherals (screen, keyboard, sound chips etc), that can be accessed by the OS installed in device RAM. In the case of a PC, though most machines seem to come with the mighty Microsoft OS, alternative OSs such as Linux, IBM OS2/Warp, Unix or even MacOS, in some form, can be readily installed.
This was the reason I became so intrigued by the XDA Community when I learned what these amazing hobbyists could do, often putting the original manufacturers efforts to shame, and all just because the possibility existed.
So to answer the OPs question:
"Is possible change my O.S WP7.5 ..??? .. i like android.. please helpme !! "
"Anything is possible. Whether a machine is popular enough to warrant the attention needed by our community of backroom geniuses is the issue."
To be given an answer:
"Go jump off a cliff. Please! Or use your remaining single brain cell to realise maybe you should sell your Omnia7 and get an Android for whatever reason."
.. on a site I've come to respect over the years, is downright rude, an answer obviously not given by any of the community that actually does the work required to realise the enormous possibilities of our devices.
... then again maybe it's just because I hate bullies.....
Keep up the great work XDA!!
Peace
ok
The reason I use the omnia 7 is because I gave it away .. I just wanted to see the possibility of changing the system to android, but apparently it is not possible .. okay .. as a human being has the ability to adapt .. I did a jailbreak and the system .. so all ok .. thanks anyway ..
i think is impossble
