Heya, guys.
I'm Angelo. Nice to meet you all.
First of all, I want to say Congratulations to all the people who built this website up.
THere's my issue now:
I got a Samsung Galaxy S on the 22nd of December, so it's kinda new, already updated to Froyo 2.2 firmware version (factory) I9000XXJPP build RSJP5
Rooted with Z4Root and Lagfixed with Ryanza's OneClickLagFix v2.2, I also modified the schedule (I've set deadline with tweaks instead of the default cpq).
I'm not good at all with all those roms and kernels stuff, Odin... Doesn't sound "safe" for me, don't want to toss it after three weeks.
I tried to speed up my phone, it went from 952 to 1857, but I don't see any changes, only at the start when I boot the phone, it loads faster.
Could you guys help me with this stuff out? I'd like to avoid to flash my phone, just to point this out.
Thanks in advance, Angelo.

If you are rooted then you might as well download a ROM that can be flashed using Recovery Mode.
Download [ROM] [11.01.2011] Darky's v8.0 Gingerbread Edition ★ JPY ★
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
Make sure your download mode is working... ( search for 3 button fix )
Install CWM (search for this)
Flash ROM by copying the ROM to you internal sd and reboot to recovery...
Done
Oh thanks! And how does this work? What does this introduce on my phone?
Do I have to remove my lagfix? Explain please >_>

I recommend flashing any custom JPY rom, 2.2.1 is night and day compared to 2.2, very fast, also recommend using Hardcores Speedmod kernel as well, make sure to disable your lagfix,(oclf does not work in hardcores) and use the ext4 lagfix from Hardcores kernel...
All you really have to do is flash your rom of choice in recovery, then flash your kernel, in recovery as well, and then apply your lagfix.. check your rom of choices thread, most come with instructions on installing

If you check the threads for the ROMs you'll see very detailed install guides that the chefs have put together. You will probably need to use Odin for some steps so get the right drivers and read up on that (it's all here in the stickies or in General).
That's why it's always good to do lots of reading before posting
The best ROM available at the moment IMO, in terms of speed, customizability, and the best support community, it's Doc's Kichen.
Put together your ROM at www.romkitchen.org.
Check his thread for the instructions and if you need help. You won't be disappointed

Since you are running Froyo currently, you must first copy your desired ROM to your SD card, and then flash a kernel that has ClockWork build in (such as Voodoo or Hardcore). Then you can simply reboot into recovery (volume up + home + power) and install the ROM from the SD card. That's about all there is to it If you have problems you can use the "clean install method" of flashing back to Eclair with pit but this is rarely necessary.
Using Doc's ROM is really the way to go, you get great choices of launchers, kernels, themes, modems, so you can make it just how you want it without having to waste time changing/installing things afterwards.

Either way, the procedure is basically the same. We could go back and forth all day
With Doc's online kitchen you can have Voodoo 5.1 with his awesome sound work ready to go right out of the box (hmm that idiom doesn't really work with ROMs does it )
I really appreciate your help but... I don't know how to flash a kernel... I would like to do all these things with my phone directly...

Sorry bud, but there is no way to flash a kernel without Odin unless you have clockwork already. Which you don't if you're on an official Froyo release that has 3e recovery (clockwork can't be used unless you change kernels with Odin).
Flashing with Odin is easy, go into download (volume down + home + power), plug into PC, open up Odin, press PDA, and browse to the .tar of your kernel (such as Voodoo or Hardcore) that you downloaded. Press start and watch the magic happen. This is covered in great detail in many threads, plz look around

Go to the market download rom manager app 4 free , open it, then chose for instal cwm

ROM Manager is not recommended for most SGS ROMs. In addition, it is likely to cause problems with Froyo ROMs with 3e recovery that don't like unsigned zips.

Use my guide but with an appropriate firmware from samfirmware.
Not a hell lot you can do about the download speed. I suspect it might have something to do with hotfile - I get incredibly ****ty speed from hotfile, but not from any other file sharing service.
There should be a few threads lying around in the general section about stock roms. Try downloading from there instead of ****ty hotfile.

Before you flash anything you gotta make sure you have 2 backup plans. One is, of course, the nandroid backup. The other is having a stock firmware file you can flash with Odin in case everything goes to hell.
In my case, I have a JPU stock firmware stored on my home computer and on my work laptop. Every time I screw up so badly everything is FUBAR I go back to JPU and works like a charm.
Ah also, along with the JPU I have a CF-Root flashable file for JPU (just needs to be Froyo specific, not firmware release specific) so I can have root.
That's the only advice that hasn't been given to you already.
In reality, the Galaxy S is pretty hard to really brick. The bootloader may get corrupted but there's almost always a way out.
ok thanks guys +1

I'm a bit confused by all the 'stuff' that can be installed and downloaded. I don't want to root or change ROMs, I just want to change to 2.3.4 from 2.3.3 as according to some, that's enough to improve battery life. So what's the simplest way for dummies like me to do it? What else do I need to install to do it, apart from the i9100XXKG1.zip ? Risk of bricking phone? Need to backup settings, apps, etc? Reverting to 2.3.3 easy?
As far as im aware unless samsung update their stock firmware you will need to root your device and choose one of the custom roms that include the version your wanting.

Harolds is right. You just unzip the 2.3.4 firmware and flash the three files. You do not need to be rooted to flash firmware using Odin
Thanks guys. Is there any risk I can brick the phone before I go ahead? Do I install odin to my PC and flash from the PC to the phone whilst the phone is connected?
If its that easy i may be tempted, will this fix the echo issue that is problematic? Plus is it a warranty breaker?

It's a good point. It could break the warranty or even brick the phone. I'm wondering how far away the official version is. If it's just a matter of weeks, I'd feel safer holding fire, knowing that I'd (presumably?) be covered in the event of something going wrong.

If one flashes the 3 files, then the ROM will be updated to KG1, isn't it? Say, if I have KE7 and flashes the 3 files then I go to KG1? If I just want to upgrade to the 2.3.4 kernel, shouldn 't I only flash the zImage file from the tar archive?

Well I wouldn't say it couldn't brick the phone and its quite easy to flash back to stock to keep the warrnty if needed. Bricking is rare but as I said I couldn't guarantee it wouldn't happen. Normally worse case is soft brick and you can get into download mode again with the power-volume down and menu button - or by using a jig. Even though its not official firmware, it shouldn't up your custom rom count, at least it didn't on mine. But go with what you are comfortable with.

Thanks for the info. So it's pretty safe to do this in the knowledge that the warranty is ok by virtue of being able to return to stock rom, and a soft brick can be fixed. I presume there's also a more serious 'hard' brick, does that mean the phone becomes utterly useless and can't be fixed?
If I go ahead with this now, I can easily re download my apps as I believe they get wiped. But what about SMS messages, email settings, call logs, accounts and other general settings on the phone, do they get wiped?
Unlock Root Tools is a android root tool. Supports the Android 2.1,2.2 and 2.3Easy way to get root access Permissions!
the software can be found at : LINKS REMOVED
Try at your own risk but It worked like a charm for my SGS2,
How to Root Your SGS2:
To Root your phone you will have to download Unlock Roottool from the unlockroot.com. and install
1) Your device must be in USB Debugging mode.
2) If you have not installed Android SDK Driver , install it after installing the tool : Start Menu -> Programs -> Unlock root -> Install Driver
3) Connect your device to your PC, Run UnlockRoot.exe
4) Click “Unlock Root”, Enjoy
I did not test the "unroot" option of this tool yet.
Thanks
So rather than use CFRoot which takes all of two minutes, I run an exe in debug mode from a source that I have absolutely no idea about the credentials of ?

OK then I will remove the words "easiest and symplest"
No doubt CF-Root is the best and simplest for those who already started using the Odin.
CF Root method :
1) Get into Download mode
2) Open ODIN, select the file
3) Connect phone and select start
4) Done in under 30 secs
Much easier than this "unlockroot" method...
This may not be the easiest way to get root for us.
But for somebody who doesn't know what odin is, Windows user who doesn't even know there is a download and recovery mode on their phones.
Or for someone who doesn't want to mess up with jigs and flash counters.
For them, this could be the easiest way to root and unroot their phones.
That people will find this usefull, others should shut up.

Well it depends where you have changed stuff. Best bet would be indeed download a gb rom for your phones region and flash it throught pc odin with a pit file. Follow dr Ketans thread in sticky section of development. If you do that you are likely to get default stuff back. After that a full factory reset on gb should help to. Google for reset code which you enter in dialer. Cant remember but it ended in 3855. Dont do that in ICS btw. All ICS has bug where wipe or hard reset can brick your phone
Where did you change stuff for your radio btw?

Stuck on android figure could mean files blocking booting, in gb from recovery you can do a wipe cache and factory reset. That should solve that. Tp get into recovery volume button up, homekey and power button same time when booting up

Check your CSC code of phone. Dial *#06# to get imei. Enter that in *272*imei# that should match your rom in order to update. You can change it there to but it will initiate a full wipe.
Also if you are rooted best to unroot before updating via kies.
