hello, I am thinking about purchasing the epic 4g for my little brother for Christmas.
I myself currently have the evo, which means im already paying the $10 4g fee. Now if I buy him the epic (we're on a family plan) do we need to pay another additional $10, fee?
Also, what is the rootability on the new versions of these phones? do most roms on here include froyo? and lastly, do you guys recommend the phone?
I'm actually curious about your charge question too as I'm looking at getting a 4g phone for my wife soon.
As to the other questions:
The epic is very, very easy to root (in the development section you'll find one click root and recovery, and its phenomenal) and yes most of the current roms do feature the DK28 froyo leak build. Also, Cynogenmod is very close to be completed for the epic so that is more good modding news.
Finally, as to whether I would recommend the phone that is really a tough question. The Samsung support is rather terrible. They are neither quick nor efficient at getting out updates and its quite pathetic.
On the other hand, the phone itself is blazingly fast and the screen is the most gorgeous display I've ever seen. Every time I think I'm tired of waiting for Sammy to update our software I look at the Evo and the lack of SAMOLED is just too much too bear. You get spoiled very quickly by how crisp and clean it is. My friends who have the iPhone4 and its retina display (even my brand new iPod Touch has it actually) and there is just no comparison.
I guess what I'm saying is that if the modding community is enough (in your opinion) to make up for the lack of Manufacturer support (I would say it is) then it is a wonderful phone and I would recommend it.
great insight thank you, and yes as long as a phone has community support and updated roms, its much more preferred to me than manufacturer updates.
the breaking deal is whether or not I still have to pay $10 a month >(
I have 2 Epic's and An EVO on our plan.
Yes you pay $10.00 per phone, per month.
As to which is better, I use the Epic the Wife uses the EVO.
Now we both had iPhone 3G before.
For me I like Touchwiz over HTC Sense UI but like I said I had an iPhone for 2 years.
The EVO is better build quality, and better support.
The Epic is faster running 2.1 than the EVO is with 2.2.
The Epic is a fantastic phone as is the EVO so you can't go wrong.
There are days I love my epic and days I wish I had the EVO...Most days I love my Epic.
As to the other Epic that I mentioned that one my 63 year old Dad is using, and no he's not a geek. And he likes it very much.
I hope that helps a little.

Its 10bucks per phone. On my family plan we hae two evos and an epic. I like the epic for the keyboard and gaming. U can't go wrong with either epic or evo.
They are both really good phones.

Yes I pay it
The funny thing is, when I was with ATT my phone bill was $50.00 more (I didn't get a discount)
But with sprint I pay less and get more service.
And yes I think the fee is BS.
It's better than just strait getting bent over
Wow, really? I didn't know that.
The $10 fee for one phone alone is ridiculous considering how sparse 4G is, but to charge $10 for EVERY phone? Isn't paying an extra $10 to get "special service" on your account enough? Jeez.

Alright I'm just going to say this: I'm sick of people complaining about the $10 fee. Its two trips to Starbucks. 2 meals at Mcdonalds. Sprint already has the best deal on unlimited everything. Suck it up. Deal with it.

That being said,
the Epic is a great phone. And the Development teams make it even better.
Get it. I dare ya.

dude i would just get the hero! these roms aren't bad but its not the same as the real thing
I'm considering it, but right now I pay $50 per month for 1200 anytime minutes and unlimited everything. For 1000 minutes on a plan that qualifies for the Pre or the Hero it'd be $79.99, or $360 more per year.

yeah it sux that the good phones have the redicoulus plans
There's nothing like the real thing. I'm getting an android phone as soon as Verizon gets them in.
Just to add my two cents, I agree with everyone else... get a real android phone if you can.
sounds like you have the $50 SERO plan. I've got the $30 one, and yeah I'm just as torn as you. It's hard to weigh recurring cost against coolness, just depends on your priorities. IMHO, the cupcake android builds are pretty darn good for everyday use, but they are still not perfect, people still have some problems. My plan is to wait for another year to see if someone figures out a way to get an android phone onto a SERO plan, because in my current financial situation (I'm a poor medical resident supporting a family of four on a solo house officer's salary) I can't justify the increase in recurring cost. In another three years when my salary undergoes a substantial increase I may consider dumping my SERO plan, but even then I may find the extra costs hard to justify for a phone, no matter how cool it is. Plus, by then SERO rules may have changed, there may be more cool phones like the TP2 that are allowed on it (did I associate the word cool with a win mo phone?!?), etc etc.
You've got to figure out how much the coolness and stability and full useability of the real deal (full GPS, full bluetooth, accelerometer, digital compass) is worth to you and balance that against your personal finances, no one can do that for you.
id say no, the vogue is outdated, buy a real android based phone like the hero. thats what im doing in 3 weeks.
Wait... Hero can't be used on SERO? Says who?
I switched over to a Hero. i already had an everything plan, so no change in my recurring costs. IMO, the hero just adds a bit more speed, stability and screen response to what we have on the vogue. I actually turned Sense UI off, don't use the widgets and it eats the battery pretty good. My new phone looks very similar to my old one!
But I am a geocacher, so the compass is what really made me update.

I am not 100% sure but the plan that replaced the SERO isnt too bad and I think the HERO woks on it. It has the all mobile-to-mobile is free and if you go family and two phones the price is comperable.
Man, it doesn't work on SERO?! That's messed up!

except in one big area, that is price. Sprint SERO 500 $30 a month, EPRP (everything plus referral program) EP w/ data 500 is $60. The comparable SERO vs ERPR EP w/ data 1000 minutes are $50 vs $80. Yes, Hero works on EPRP, but no, prices are not comparable. This is why SERO users hold on to their plans like they are gold . . .

sprint has decided to restrict new cool phones from being able to be activated on SERO plans. Boo to them, but that's what we've got. Go read as SprintUsers, there's a lot of info on there. Interestingly, new win mo phones are fine on SERO, so even sprint thinks they are not cool . . .
I bought the Nexus One last February, with a two year Tmobile account.
I attended the Google I/O conference last week, and Google was kind enough to give me a Sprint HTC EVO 4G! The EVO comes with one month of free unlimited calls and unlimited data. On June 20th I must get a paid sprint account if I want to keep using the phone.
I live in Phoenix, AZ.
Now I have to decide which one I want to use as my primary cell-phone. If you were me, which would you use as your main cell-phone, and why? The Nexus One or the EVO 4G?

You'll be paying $350 I believe if you cancel your T-Mobile contract, so that's probably not a good idea.
*AND*
You can sell your Evo now on Ebay for $1200.
The logistics of the situation (regardless of the phone comparisons) make it a pretty easy decision imo
evo is superior hardware but u are at the mercy of sprint for OS updates (they said froyo wouldnt be available till after 2nd quarter of 2010 at the earliest). the nexus ones main advantage over any other phone (including other android phones) is that it is not tied to any carrier and gets updates first.
the main advantage that the evo has is the 4g which is not available in most areas... also, from my tests, tmobiles 3g+ hspa is about on par with 4g wimax in speed (i have clear's 4g wimax service on my laptop.. so alot of 4g's speed advantage is negated by early tech and low coverage and its a HUGE battery killer (my netbook goes from 8hrs battery life to 4hrs battery life left when i turn on 4g)
so personally i would keep my nexus but yeah the evo still has the better hardware.... so if u want the better hardware and dont care too much about early 4g coverage and dont need android updates asap the evo would be better
Evo has a sweet package of hardware, nice camera, HDMI out, 4g WiMax (if it is available in your area) and a larger screen.
But, Nexus one is going to get the 2.2 Froyo first and it might be months for it to be available on Evo, if you are not rooting it.
I would say use Nexus One until you get FroYo on Evo.
PS: Until Nexus One gets GingerBread

Even still, if you switch from T-Mobile to Sprint:
A) Pay an ETF to close the T-Mobile account.
B) You keep both lines open and pay $50-$80 times TWO per month.
I'd probably choose the Evo, but it just doesn't make sense with your contract.

Definitely dump the Evo for $1200 (or what the market will bear)
Use part of that cash to buy out of the T-mo contract
Now free to sign a new contract - or not - or buy an Evo outright once it's commonly available, with money left in your pocket.
For the record, N1 will get my vote over any other phone on the market.
Why? Who else has Froyo working today?

You can sell the evo and make up for the etf and sign up with sprint for another evo and probably make a few bucks out of it
I'd get the Nexus One. Early reviews of the EVO have it being slower than the incredible with the same processor. I guess the time to render images on a screen that size slows things down.
Plus the nexus will always get updates first, and I prefer the stock UI over Sense.
Also, the HD2 and EVO are just too big in my opinion. The Nexus one has a perfect feel for a phone in my hand.
EVO its already rooted and theres a bunch of great devs who are getting it so you should see froyo on there in no time
Ill keep the nexus one and wait for the next "Google phone"
I would take evo except I don't like sprint coverage.
Honestly, I think the EVO is just too big. And I have pretty big hands. I can fit it in my hand alright, but it's just a little uncomfortable, I feel like I really have to gorilla grip it if I want to make sure I've got a good hold. The nexus is the perfect width, and fits in my hand the way I expect a phone to.
Don't get me wrong, the screen on the EVO is great and wonderful and everything, but I don't know if it's worth being over encumbered.
Just my 2 cents.
I would use the nexus as the primary phone. It's perfect build quality materials and such a classy device with metal build and teflon coating. The hardware is very similar, same CPU, RAM, screen resolution, etc. I'd keep the nexus and sell the evo if given the choice. Or use evo as a web tablet.

moneywise, this is the best choice. I also think the Evo 4G is waaaay too big for my needs. I am extremely happy with my nexus one on tmobile. And the first-in-line for the next couple updates is also a major perk for me.
On the other hand, 3G coverage is a lot better for sprint compared to tmobile. if you are at all worried about coverage, and you dont live in a decently sized city, that may be the clincher.
As for me, im in Kansas City, and we're getting 4G this summer (supposedly) and i would have definitely stuck with sprint had the Evo 4G not been a huge ass monster of a device (literal size-wise).
If you care about saving money: Go with the N1 (I pay $34/mo for data and voice compared to a whopping $80 minimum you would pay with the Evo)
If money isn't an issue: Go with the Evo

At this point they should be paying you $100+ to sign a 2 year contract with the outdated phone. What is sad is that Sprint does not have a more current android phone without the dumb 4G tax.

the hero is only a year old next month. it's still a decent phone. tbh the evo will be considered outdated as well by x-mas. the thing that worries me is the fact sprint has not announced their fall/winter lineup yet. i really hope the hero2 or updated desire is coming.
i do not want nor need a 4g phone. the $10 coolness fee is a joke and 4g kills your battery big time.

My parents and my girlfriend just switched to sprint and recieved this for a penny. This phone maybe outdated to some advanced users here but my parents and gf dont qualify as advanced and they love their new phones. Also a side note sprint canceled their referal program but I played stupid and asked if we both get a 25 dollar credit for the referal and they did it for me when activating my parents but said they no longer honor the program when activating my gf, so I guess it depends on who you speak too.

IMO. 4g is great and all, but if you live in an area with 4g coverage, you probably already have good 3g coverage. I'd rather just use 3g because I've noticed 4g is a major drain on battery life.
You, I admit, I did not read the article fully, I was trying to do breaking news.. lulz apologies!
Yeah, I saw that too the other day. Not only did they get the prices wrong for the plans but they say the $10 fee is for the 4G even though that is not what Sprint says it is for.
The same day this article came out another one talking up the iPhone and AT&T showed up...
I thought they were fair and balanced.
Foxnews is the worst they always lie, I just don't know why so many people follows what they say!! even though most of the time they are wrong!!

While I don't really like fox news, they didn't really lie about plan pricing. The said "full plan" which, to me, implies sprint's "simply everything" plan, which is $100.00. Plus $30.00 for hotspot, plus $10.00 for "premium feature" (which we all know is 4G...) that brings a monthly bill to $140.00.
I personally pay $80.00 like I'm sure a lot of others do as well, the everything data 450. Who needs the simply everything plan... landlines are SO 2009. (Lol)

How are they lying? Which phones get charged $10 premium fees? The Evo 4G and the Samsung Epic 4G. Hmmmm........only two phones with 4G. The only reason Sprint does not state that you pay $10 for 4G because other people in areas that dont have 4G would not have to pay.
even if 4g phones on sprint cost $10 more a month, its still cheaper than [email protected] or verizon for an equal plan. AND we have truly unlimited data, v and a dont
imo 4g is not over hyped. its ****ing fast.
also, I think buying a new device for new technology is not so outrageous, at all. Apple does it all the time, heck, their first phone didnt even have 3g... lol if you buy a new hd cam and your computers graphic card just isnt up to par, you need a new one, same with everything else, if you want the latest of one side of tech, you need the latest on the other side as well. and thats a common know fact. suck it up fox

Obama has nothing to do with lawyer greed. If you are trying to refer to socialism there, sorry to burst your bubble, but what would you do without medicare? Medicare is a form of socialism.
Granted by the time I retire, there won't be enough money going into medicare to cover people. xD

So, who is not getting the Atrix now due to AT&T forcing tethering and horrible pricing?
see: http://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...ailable-for-preorder-on-feb-13-115191644.html
Me. Att is so stupid.
What is the next best phone for att now?
I will definetly NOT be getting it.
First $500 for the laptop dock by itself, ARE YOU KIDDING!!! Yes, I know there is a package where you can get both for $500. However, that requires you to change to a 2gb data pro plan with tethering. Why the hell would I pay to tether something to my phone that isn't even a fully functioning separate device?
To convince me to get it, they would have to change it to $150 phone, $150 dock, no change in my plan.
Press release HERE for those that haven't seen it.
Add me to this list.
Price of phone and laptop dock: $599.99 -- though they'll send you one of those annoying-to-use $100 gift card credit cards.
That's the price WITH a 2-year contract which carries a $325 Early Termination Fee.
Purchase of their most expensive data plan with tethering is REQUIRED. Even if you aren't planning to tether. Just using Firefox in laptop mode requires that plan.
Plus the phone is locked down all to hell, with an encrypted bootloader and restrictions on what you can download from the app market and restrictions on sideloading.
Screw you, AT&T. It makes me so sick to see such an awesome phone screwed by your ridiculous corporate policies and just plain greed.
Goodbye Atrix and AT&T. Hello Thunderbolt and Verizon.
(God I never thought I'd say the V word...)
Yah, I am very disappointed in this announcement as I was looking forward to this phone and using it on my unlimited data plan. I could have gone with the ****ty pricing, but giving up my unlimited for a tethering plan that is more expensive and when I am not even tethering anything, nope. Now I'm going to have to seriously consider going to another carrier. What are the other phones to consider now that this one is dead out of the starting gates?

Um yeah, TOTALLY not getting the Atrix at this point. What's the point of getting it if we can't dock it and use all it's power.
Jesus ATT, this is the possible worst case scenario, expensive ass dock, tethering required. Give it to em to blow shi* out of the water. So upset. They'll lose and I hope they do, so much more money than they could have made.
I want to know what is going on in their market research department. Do they honestly think people are going to pay for this? $500 for a laptop dock? An extra $20 for tethering when you're not even tethering? I see a VERY tiny market for that. Average Joe Consumer wouldn't be interested in that in the first place. XDA Geeks totally would, but not at that price out of principle. What does that leave, business users? No company in their right mind is going to give their employees a device that will actually decrease their mobile productivity, especially at the price. Citrix or not, you won't be able to do much real work. And even with the Citrix, connectivity and speed will be spotty at best on AT&T's overburdened network.
EDIT: I wonder if this is going to be like the first iPhone where Apple had to lower the price by $100 (or was it $200?) after a month to get people to start buying the thing. You'd think AT&T would learn...
I'll get an inspire

ATT isn't forcing tethering, thats only if you use the dock.
MOD EDIT: Respect others, first and final warning

The most defining feature of the phone comes with a mandatory charge. People should be raising hell about this. ATT SUCKS.
Infuse Here I Come!!!
Thought I had made up my mind on the Atrix, but $300 for a battery/monitor??? What's the point. I don't game, so I may as well go for the Sammy Infuse with it's bigger and much better screen, and 1.2 processor.
I'm hopeful that Sammy will feel pressure to announce a release date soon, since yesterday was HTC and today was Moto.
