Who is not getting the Atrix now that AT&T ruined it - Atrix 4G General

So, who is not getting the Atrix now due to AT&T forcing tethering and horrible pricing?
see: http://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...ailable-for-preorder-on-feb-13-115191644.html

Me. Att is so stupid.
What is the next best phone for att now?

I will definetly NOT be getting it.
First $500 for the laptop dock by itself, ARE YOU KIDDING!!! Yes, I know there is a package where you can get both for $500. However, that requires you to change to a 2gb data pro plan with tethering. Why the hell would I pay to tether something to my phone that isn't even a fully functioning separate device?
To convince me to get it, they would have to change it to $150 phone, $150 dock, no change in my plan.
Press release HERE for those that haven't seen it.

Add me to this list.
Price of phone and laptop dock: $599.99 -- though they'll send you one of those annoying-to-use $100 gift card credit cards.
That's the price WITH a 2-year contract which carries a $325 Early Termination Fee.
Purchase of their most expensive data plan with tethering is REQUIRED. Even if you aren't planning to tether. Just using Firefox in laptop mode requires that plan.
Plus the phone is locked down all to hell, with an encrypted bootloader and restrictions on what you can download from the app market and restrictions on sideloading.
Screw you, AT&T. It makes me so sick to see such an awesome phone screwed by your ridiculous corporate policies and just plain greed.

Goodbye Atrix and AT&T. Hello Thunderbolt and Verizon.
(God I never thought I'd say the V word...)

Yah, I am very disappointed in this announcement as I was looking forward to this phone and using it on my unlimited data plan. I could have gone with the ****ty pricing, but giving up my unlimited for a tethering plan that is more expensive and when I am not even tethering anything, nope. Now I'm going to have to seriously consider going to another carrier. What are the other phones to consider now that this one is dead out of the starting gates?

I figured this news required a hitler reaction video
here you go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQEyFsO4XZ4

WTF..... Screw it I might as well get the flippin inspire now... I might consider switching to verizon too for the thunderbolt... We'll see.

Will still probably get it. But will also probably be getting the xoom when it comes out in addition.

Not sure at this point, will be waiting to see what happens with WMC. That LG
3D phone is starting to look pretty good imo.

Guess i'm just going to settle for an inspire. Partly due to the principle of it, partly because that laptop dock was the only real thing i was excited about, i'd rather have the 4.3" screen. Tegra 2 is exciting, but I don't game much, or any heavy multitasking. So Inspire here i come

Um yeah, TOTALLY not getting the Atrix at this point. What's the point of getting it if we can't dock it and use all it's power.
Jesus ATT, this is the possible worst case scenario, expensive ass dock, tethering required. Give it to em to blow shi* out of the water. So upset. They'll lose and I hope they do, so much more money than they could have made.

I want to know what is going on in their market research department. Do they honestly think people are going to pay for this? $500 for a laptop dock? An extra $20 for tethering when you're not even tethering? I see a VERY tiny market for that. Average Joe Consumer wouldn't be interested in that in the first place. XDA Geeks totally would, but not at that price out of principle. What does that leave, business users? No company in their right mind is going to give their employees a device that will actually decrease their mobile productivity, especially at the price. Citrix or not, you won't be able to do much real work. And even with the Citrix, connectivity and speed will be spotty at best on AT&T's overburdened network.
EDIT: I wonder if this is going to be like the first iPhone where Apple had to lower the price by $100 (or was it $200?) after a month to get people to start buying the thing. You'd think AT&T would learn...

I'll get an inspire

The most defining feature of the phone comes with a mandatory charge. People should be raising hell about this. ATT SUCKS.

Infuse Here I Come!!!
Thought I had made up my mind on the Atrix, but $300 for a battery/monitor??? What's the point. I don't game, so I may as well go for the Sammy Infuse with it's bigger and much better screen, and 1.2 processor.
I'm hopeful that Sammy will feel pressure to announce a release date soon, since yesterday was HTC and today was Moto.

Screw Google and Screw the Nexus One

Having read the the "leaked" info the last few weeks, I wasn't completely surprised when I spoke with a TMo rep and confirmed that in order to use this phone, I'd essentially have to double my current rate plan due to the fact that I am on a Family Plan. I am, however, finding myself to be surprisingly angered by this fact.
That Google is stipulating which rate plan a customer can use on a particular device is absurd at best and insulting at worst. Am I not intelligent enough to know which rate plan suits my needs? Thank you, Google, for showing me the light. I'm glad to know that it's better for me to spend $80/month on myself PLUS the extra $80/month on my wife instead of the $100/month we spend for both right now.
Screw you, Google. And screw your phone.
nspbass
Whats the problem?
Buy it "unlocked".
if you buy the phone from tmob then you need to get a "plan" just for this phone, and the purchase price of the nexus is 180.00? or so
but if you buy it from google direct, unlocked, you just pop in your sim and your good to go...no rate plan increase or changes...however...you will pay the 530.00 asking price for the phone....
so you do have "some" optiions...
quit being a broke ass and buy the unsubsodized version and you can use your current plan. these days nice things cost money and you gotta pay to play.
wow... there are other options man. icon57 stated already...
Uhh, I am pretty sure T-Mobile decides what rates are required for the phone in order for them to fork over all that money to pay for it for you
Get the unlocked one if you aren't happy with that
These people don't do their research first do they?
Maybe I should have stated that I've been a huge fan of Google for years and of the Android OS from the first day I heard of it. I've had my G1 for quite a while now and have enjoyed it very much. When I heard of the Nexus One, I was happy to hear that I could experience Android on a much faster, much more capable phone.
Maybe I also should have stated that I'm in the military and don't make a lot of money. I've also got a wife and child I'm supporting on only my income. So, I'm not being just some broke-ass. I'm being a broke-ass soldier serving my country protecting your moron asses on a daily basis and trying to take care of my family. That's the problem with changing my rate plan or shelling out $530.
So how about this: instead of jumping on me for being displeased with this product, you shove your heads up your respective asses.

"I'm a stupid teenage girl who wants pity." is all I heard.
If you don't want a specified rate plan, buy it un-subsidized. If you have read any of the threads in this forum, you would know it is cheaper in the long run anyway for that exact reason.
You know if you wanted an iPhone used to (Not sure anymore, I don't keep up with that stuff) have to have a certain rate plan as well.
Is it a right to own a high-end phone? No, it's a privilege.. reserved for those willing to pay. If it's out of your price range, then too bad.
Being in the military does not make you holier than any of us. I am a strong supporter of the armed forces. The trouble is you have to wait till the press conference is over. Don't assume anything. By assuming you are making an ASS of U and ME and less of me I guess.
Also, all americans should expect to pay 500+ for a good decent phone. You have been in the past. You just don't realize it.

Well put. I still can't believe how many people can't figure out that the subsidy is ALWAYS recovered in the form of higher plan costs. T-mobile is the only one showing this though, as they're the only carrier with a subsidized and unsubsidized pricing structure.
@nspbass
I also use a tmo plan that costs less than the one required for the Nexus One and am planning to get on a family plan with my new wifey soon. If you quickly do the math, its cheaper in the long run to buy the phone unlocked and chose your own tmo plan. Especially if you take advantage of Google Voice and Skype.
One other thing is that the Nexus One's frequency works across most continents unlike any other US carrier. I would think someone in the military would see that as an advantage.
@nspbass
Yup. But get that through the moronic heads of those fanboys on here.

What did they do wrong? Act like a business that is interested in income?
Just the fact that Google/HTC is selling this for only 530 dollars is amazing in itself. Compare other phones with similar hardware (HD2) and you will see a huge price difference. Stop crying.
Will someone shut the 11-B up? Terribly sorry you're an E-2, but the military does not owe you a living and Google does not owe you a phone. Now shut that whining hole and get back to doing something marginally useful, like KP.
Duckies
(Decidedly NOT an E-2.)
to the OP:
look, it's true that the phone carrier plans cost too much and phones are expensive. the fact is, the phone companies have us by the balls and Google couldn't do anything about that by releasing one phone even if thy wanted to.
your complaints about the nexus would apply to any new phone you wanted to get. the only reason you expected more is because people on the internet hyped it so much without knowing what they were talking about, and apparently you believed them

WOW! - Junior member...stop crying and be sensible.
I called T-Mobile (yes...being proactive).
You can not "Downgrade or cancel" your plan (i.e. you can't remove internet, or go below 500 mins a month)
But the rep stated you are allowed to take two individual plans and merge them to a family plan. AS LONG AS YOU KEEP THE DATA AND MESSAGING plans and the MINUTES FOR EACH PLAN are higher than your current plan.
So to put it simply - YES YOU CAN GET A FAMILY PLAN, but after you have both phones activated.
Ind plans are $39.99 + Data + Messaging
Family Unlimited is $99.99 + Data + Messaging
If you are paying more, and getting more minutes - is that an Upgrade or Downgrade?

Pricing is Official - $199 on Contract - $499 for Laptop Dock

http://www.androidcentral.com/att-a...available-march-6-or-earlier-pre-order-feb-13
- The phone itself will cost $199 after rebate and two-year contract.
- Presales start Feb. 13, the phone will be available March 6 "or earlier."
- You have to have a minimum data service that costs $15 a month.
- The Atrix and Laptop Dock can be purchased as a package for $499.99 -- after contract and a $100 rebate.
- There's also an Entertainment Access Kit -- with the HD Multimedia Dock, a Blueooth keyboard and mouse, and remote control. That costs $199.
- The Laptop dock by itself costs $499.99. (Better to buy it with the phone.)
So, On contract, it's going to be $199. If you want the Laptop Dock, you can get the Bundle at $499. AFTER rebate, and you MUST have the tethering plan.
Sorry, but NO sale. Requiring the tethering plan is ludicrous, and $499 for the laptop dock? I REALLY wanted this phone and the Laptop dock, but these prices are stupid.

So ****ing stupid.....at&t just killed all the hype surrounding this and i'm sure they lost a huge portion of sales from people that were so amped for this....
Anyone else a little mad that att would take such an amazing and exciting device and just **** it all up? I was SO excited for this. Now, because they cant be reasonable, I gotta settle for something else. REALLY ATT? You're asking too much for the kit but I would have paid it if not for the ridiculous tethering requirement. Can someone justify this? Please? I'd love to see them try
i probably would have also paid the $499.....but requiring tethering makes this a definite no for me...
I'm pretty sure that I will now not be getting this phone, and most likely will be leaving AT&T. My contract has been up for some time, I was looking forward to upgrading to the Atrix. Forcing the tethering plan for a non-tethered device killed it for me, as well as the ludicrous pricing but I could have dealt with the pricing. Too bad AT&T really screwed this up, I was looking forward to this and was convinced to buy it up until now.

I'm livid at their pricing model. I can see the phone being $199, I'm ok with that. I was planning on getting the Laptop Dock instead of a NetBook. I was only going to use it via WiFi. But now, I'll have to buy it for $499? AND I'm required to get the most expensive Data plan AND tethering? Uhm, no. Sorry, you can eat it AT&T..
This product is really a game changer, and they had a great opportunity to come out strong with this type of convergence device and make it popular. Now? It will be hyped up, no one will but it, and it will fade into existence.

I'm confused about the "tethering required" part. I'm seeing it kind of mentioned, but only with the dock? The webpage and quote #2 in the pr says the phone itself only requires the $15 data plan.

We are all confused about the "tethering required".
AT&T NEEDS to look up the definition of device tethering. Wikipedia has one HERE. It is clearly connecting a computer to a mobile device in order to access the internet. The laptop dock can not be classified as a computer as it does not function without the phone being connected to it. If they say it is a computer, they need to look HERE for the definition of computer.
Too damn much, sorry. Their greed is going to kill this brilliant platform before it even gets off the ground.
I was willing to shell out $500, even if it meant pinching my nose and going with AT&T, but that extra tethering charge is complete bull****. Sorry AT&T, but no sale.
I wonder. What would happen if you plugged the phone into the dock and did NOT have the tethering plan? They specifically mentioned firefox needs it. is it possible another browser would work without tethering? Because if you lose the tethering I would be willing to spend $499 on the whole kit

I was curious about this as well. Indeed if you buy the laptop dock from AT&T, to get the subsidized price you gotta get tethering. What if we obtain the dock through other channels and start using it. Also, beyond the laptop dock...You can use the webtop interface through the other dock and even without a dock i believe when hooked up properly...will those methods also require the tethering plan, I am assuming it would but how will they know if you are using it in that way?

Hopefully the laptop dock/webtop will still work on wifi if you don't have a tethering plan? I'll try to get the laptop shell elsewhere for cheaper.
Edit: but only if I can get it cheaper then a reasonable tablet. I'd rather have a tablet, so it has to be a lot cheaper

Atrix for $199 or wait for a different phone?

Hi, I am new around here. Been lurking around for a little while.
I recently lost my iPhone 3Gs so I have been looking around to replace it with an Android phone bc I am kinda bored of iOS.
I dont have an upgrade til at the end of the year so I decided to call the customer relations and see if they can work out something for me. I remember reading in a "how much did you get your atrix for?" thread where the guy said he was leaving unless they gave him a killer deal and got his for $130 +$180 in credit and no renewal of contract which is hard for me to believe. I tried and the best they gave me was $199 with extension.
I am having a hard time deciding whether to move to verizon or t-mobile but they dont have any phones that i am interested in at the moment although it seems like there will be some interesting phones on the way soon.
but I need a smartphone again ASAP bc the 'dumbphone' is makin me feel dumb.
Would it be worth it to try to hustle them a bit more for a better deal or just move on to a different network? I thought they'd give me a better deal since i been with them for a decade now but i do think $199 for the atrix is still pretty reasonable. It is just that I can always use a better deal.
Sorry if this thread is pointless but any input will be appreciated. Thanks.
$199 for an Atrix off-contract is a killer price considering that you can still take your business elsewhere and get at least $400 on ebay for the Atrix if you decide to move.
that's a great deal! go for it, you'll love the atrix
awesome deal
worst case u can still sell it on craigslist for 450+ and u are not in a contract
Honestly... I'd hold off for another month or so and wait for the SGS2. The atrix is a good phone. I jumped on this bandwagon a little early and regret it; I'm waiting for the SGS2 international (I-9100) and jumping ship as soon as it's out.
Don't get me wrong though - if you're not a tinkerer then this is a great phone. And coming from an iphone I assume you don't care about the phone being locked up seeing as how that's Apples M.O. It could be a good phone for you but personally, I want to customize it more than I'm currently able to.

Yep that's a great deal!!!
It is great phone and hopefully in couple months or sooner the boot loader will get crack which im hopping for it because that will unlock tons more enjoyment from it and with the docks imagine what you can do with those. And even Motorola might even release something or unlock the boot loader when they see sales going down because everyone wants too unlock the full potential of this device!!

i was about to say the same thing. bought it few days ago for $120. The good thing is if I dont like the phone I can return it within 90 days without any charges and if something good comes by then (lets say Iphone 5,6 or whtever)..all I have to pay is the difference which is $80...
the price is with contract extension so basically the same price anyone can get. I just said that they would give me the contract/upgrade price now instead of waiting until the end of the year when I will be "eligible" for an upgrade. My bad for the misunderstanding. I'm not sure if I will be able to get the costco price since I can't get it for $199 even from the corporate store. As far as i know, AT&T will only allow me to get it at a discounted price through the customer relations department.
I guess I'll try if I can have the customer relations put a note on my account so that any at&t carrier can see my eligibility.
Hell, you should just buy it outright for the price; if you don't like it you can just sell it for 400+.
The phone is great though, I only took mine back because of the locked bootloader, the galaxy s 2 is coming out, and I just got bored with it.
Amazon's web store has it for $149. You'll lose your unlimited data plan if you have one, but I read that if you badger them enough they'll give it back to you.
That's what I'm going to try anyway!
do you mean if you get it from amazon?
Yes, they force you to change your data plan. Last night I found out you can also get that price at Radioshack, but I don't know if the data plan hassle remains.

Keep in mind i called before the changes and confirmed that they will put back my data plan
Got mine at Radio Shack for $149. No hassle at all with data plan or setup. Took less time than it typically does at an ATT store.

Are you mad about no 4G?

If you're tired of waiting for 4G you might be able to take Verizon and/or Motorola to small claims court. I think that in NJ you can represent yourself but they, as a Corporation, must bring a lawyer to court.
Any lawyers on the forum that know what can be done? My wife once took a former employer to small claims over a breach of contract and got a couple of thousand dollars that they didn't pay her. She whupped their legal consul.

If not for BRD and Team Tiamat, I'd be mighty PO'd. You'd think that Motorola's marketing team is staffed by used car salesmen.

Just to point this out, Best Buy mistakenly or deliberately advertising the sdcard as available when Motorola's press had it as awaiting a software update is nobody's responsibility but Best Buy.
>So do we have a case?
No. Anybody who would ask for free legal advice from some dude on some online forum is not qualified to bring a suit against anybody about anything.
More to the point, if you think you have a case, you would not be asking me if I think you have a case.
Am I mad about no 4G? Not anymore, MiFi 4G LTE ftmfw!!!
Thanks VZW, for making things right....

Did VZW give you the mifi or tap your wallet for it or require a 2 year commitment? How does the monthly fee and allotted bandwidth compare to the plan for a tablet?

Got the mifi at a heavy discount, all I'll say is after the mail in rebate, I paid about 30 bucks for it. After days of *****ing, it took the place of my xoom on the existing 2yr plan so no new contract.
Data plans are the same between mifi and the xoom as far as I can tell, I was always on the 5GB data plan. Once I removed insurance on the xoom, I end up saving a few bucks every month which will more than cover the price I paid for the mifi overall. I'll warn anyone that LTE will eat your bandwidth very, very quickly. I burned thru over 1GB in about 30 minutes just screwing around. 4G is waaay overpriced, but for my work, I need it.
I did have to pay the activation fee on the mifi despite how hard I tried to get it waived, and I've been a customer for over 10yrs with 5 lines. Once the lte upgrade happens, or a suitable wifi tablet is available, the xoom goes up for sale.
I should have gone with the mifi + wifi tablet option from the start and it's what I'll be recommending to everyone looking for this kind of solution.
I'll also say that LTE on the mifi absolutely rocks, 5+ hrs of battery life and the device takes up virtually no space in my bag. I'm averaging about 16MB/s down & 14 up. I don't expect those speeds everywhere I go but it's a MAJOR improvement over 3G, the upload speed is faster than my friggin cable modem which ain't slow by most standards....
i don't care...I mean who really wants to pay for 4g anyway. I'm happy with the wifi only version

Still, they lied about the micro-sd card. If not for the Devs, and being willing to violate your warranty, you would not have this. I don't like being lied to.
F that. I paid for a Xoom that would have LTE and ol Sanjay said that it would justify the price on it. Give me LTE. Maybe the small claims idea isn't terrible.

I would argue that Verizon did not lie, they underestimated the complexity of the issue. Software features going over schedule happens all the time. Verizon has made mistakes (though the sd-card issue is a Google issue, not Verizon) and should be communicating with their users better, but they did not lie to us.
I barely care a lick if I get LTE, but the fact that LTE was one of the main reasons for the Xoom's high price annoys me greatly, especially given that we'll probably see other 4G devices at a lower price on the market soon (if they aren't available already).

To me there is little difference between breaking a promise and lying, especially when they took our money. If not for the excellent work by Team Tiamat and BRD, I'd be pretty steamed. These devs do a better job than Motorola and they don't have the oem source code.
bummer
... especially since there's a new Motorola device with different dimensions (slightly) and an LTE radio that got FCC approval today or at some other recent point in time.
The problem you guys will probably have is that Motorola/Verizon have both said that the device is "LTE upgradeable." What you need to do is look at your purchase agreement or your contract to see what it says about that, because if they don't have anything more than "we will upgrade the device when possible," you aren't going to have much of a claim because you bought it knowing that they would at some point in time.
Now, if they don't ever upgrade it, then you can go bang down the doors of the courts but other than that, there's really no point.
I really feel for you guys because they really laid it on thick with the LTE gimmick, but it's never a good idea to buy something based on a seller's future promise to upgrade at no certain point in time.

I do think there was something said about 90 days? With that being said since i bought it from VZW they better refund my money if i want it. If there is something wrong with their equipment provider (Motorola) not being able to keep their promise then that is VZW's problem to take up with them not mine. Now had i bought it straight from Motorola than that is different.
This would be almost like the warranty on your phone if something is wrong take it to VZW they replace it you don't send it to Motorola.
I'm not infuriated over no 4G. I barely use the 3G on mine cause of the lowest tier data plan. I'd probably lug mine around more if I had the 4G but then I'm sure I'd go over my GB pretty quick on it. I'm a little mad about basically being kept in the dark about this and the SD but it's not the end of the world. If Moto really drops a Xoom 2 with 4G/SD before I get it then we might have an issue. Looks possible.
Not mad for several reasons...
1. I don't live in an LTE area and don't think it'll be here this year.
2. Battery life would probably be worse on LTE, but that's speculation...
3. I would easily eat up my 3 GB cap on LTE.
4. I use it with wi-fi most of the time at home, where I like to browse sans desk or plug.
I have the 3gB plan too but plan to dump it and get a 4G phone with a $30 unlimited tether plan. I'm going to wait a few weeks for the bionic but if it isn't here by mid August, I'm going to get the Charge.
This is far better than any of the tablet plans.

Unlimited data from ATT via ebay seller?

I'm selling my unlimited ATT data for the ipad and while researching how much they go for, I ran into this guy who sells a service that makes your smartphone has unlimited data...
sounds to good to be true. I've honestly have never gone over the 2gb limit (closest was like 80%) so I'm not sure if it's worth it to me, but it got me curious...
is this really too good to be true? the feedback shows it's legit...
how does this guy pull it off?

seems legit..
probably just some ATT tech, using their ability to access peoples accounts to make money on the side
not sure it's 100% legal, but I'm 99% sure you wouldn't get in trouble by doing it
edit: if you want to do it, I would do it sooner rather than later, just in case this person might be forced to stop doing it in the near future
read through the description.
if you're comfortable giving out billing information and the last 4 of your social (which is really giving complete account access, I think) to what is essentially a complete stranger, then good luck.
that said, there's a guy on eBay who also does the same thing but for $20, I believe.

Actually, yes it can.
Identity theft is a huge and growing problem and playing fast and loose with your own personal information is a very real risk. That is essentially what you are doing - handing over information that could allow them to do things in your name.
I know, it is not the same as giving him your CC or Social Security, but why take a chance? Also, he is taking advantage of a loophole that you can be sure will be closed by AT&T when they figure out what is being done. BTW, there is no "grandfathering" guaranteed in any cellular service. If you actually read the contracts, you will see they really can do anything they want to. So you could spend the money and go through the hassle only to get one or two months of service, then be back where you started.
And we all know eBay is a place filled with trustworthy and honest people, right?
I've used the service to get unlimited for my iPhone, although I switch back n forth with the nexus, and its legit. However, you can do it yourself with some research.
