Sure, the phone's plastic, but... - Nexus S General

Am I the only one who seriously feels like it not only doesn't feel cheap, but actually feels better this way?
I mean, the device still feels nice and solid, with even weight distribution, but it also feels so light and elegant to me. I've held and used other smartphones that don't give me anything close to this feeling. I think it actually feels more stylish and elegant than the iPhone 4, plastic and all.
I'll readily submit the idea that maybe I'm the rare outlier who feels like this, but does anyone else feel this way?

I have to agree coming from a vibrant that had a little creaking problem this is way better and feels solid.I was gonna stay with the mytouch4g but I replaced 2 times and kept getting the crappy screen.Kinda glad that happened feelin this phone so far over my vibrant.Btw I wouldn't switch to this if you already have a Vibrant its just I had a deal going on with my friend so I got it at upgrade price and I will sell the Vibrant.

Agreed, the build quality is very good, the only thing that could possibly be called cheap is the back cover because it's plastic, if they covered the plastic with that soft-touch stuff like on the n1 it would be better. Overall the quality is very good, nice and solid and the haptic feedback works great compared to my n1 where the haptic feedback made it feel like it was rattling around inside my phone and about to fall apart.
The screen is the best on the market imo, and the external speaker is miles better that the one on the n1.

I totally agree here. The phone just feels light and sleek to me. I'm loving the all round experience with this thing. Definitely the best Android phone to date... hands down.
I normally go to sleep with Pandora playing on my PC but the other night I was just messing around checking out the general quality of "stuff" and turned on Pandora on the ns. I was so surprised at the quality of the sound that I ended up listening for a long while and passing out.
The difference is especially profound if you compare the sound quality with that of the tmo G2... which sounds like utter garbage.
I'm loving this thing!

The Nexus S HAD to be plastic. Why?
Because of the NFC the back cover can not be metal.

Like I've mentioned before in other threads, my only real complaint about the build quality is that I wish they had used some sort of texture coating on the casing. It's quite slick when you first start using it and haven't adjusted your grip accordingly yet.
That and my nitpicky issue about Google/OEMs constantly rearranging their capacitive buttons lol. Pick an order and stick with it!

I finally got to play with a nexus s yesterdjw and I was surprised that it did in fact feel very solid and good in the hand. But missing track ball notification colors still gets to me.

You can grab an app off the marketplace called NoLED which will use your screen as a notification light. The SAMOLED consumes almost 0 power to show the color black, so the only power loss would be from the little colored pixels that make up the icon/block showing your notification.
You can even customize it to not show notifications during certain hours, like when you're asleep, or use the proximity sensor so it won't show notifications while it's in your pocket but will display them when you take it out. Pretty cool app, all in all.

Agreed. Coming from the captivate, I feel right at home.

I got to try a friend's today and was pleasantly surprised. I actually vetoed my husband getting the original galaxy s cos I thought it felt rather plasticy, but the nexus does feel solid but light (certainly lighter than both my desire and hubby's brick/iphone4)

So this also means that other high class google phones are going to have to be made of plastic to use an NFC chip? This is what I also was wondering, and this is really going to upset all the others saying how terrible samsungs (plastic) build quality is and how wonderful HTC's (metal) is...

No phone can ever be fully cased in metal, as you need to get radio waves in and out. Android phones could use glass construction like the iPhone 4, or just stick to using higher quality plastics.
I would have no problem at all with the Galaxy or Nexus S construction if they'd used a nice softtouch case, and maybe made the phone feel heavier somehow...

It feels amazing. I'm seriously love this

The great thing about the plastic back is that you don't have to baby it or buy a case. Replacement backs will likely run around $5, so feel free to scuff it up or put grippy tape on it. At least you don't have to sorry about denting or scratching and losing resale value like metal phones.

I'm with everyone here, the build quality is awesome. I was worried after coming from N1 but I really shouldn't have. I should have known Google wouldn't let down the Nexus name.
Everytime I pick my phone up I'm more and more satisfied that I made the right choice by switching to NS.

Atrix Build Quality

Hi All,
With the Atrix due to hit the UK soonish, I have a question about the build quality.
Now we all know Motorola make solid phones. Top quality build quality.
However...
Numerous reviews highlight the fact that for such a 'high end' phone, the all-body-plasticy-feeling just doesn't cut it. Other reviews suggest it is 'hardened plastic' and that it's not really an issue.
So what do you guys think? Has anyone dropped their Atrix? How did it survive?
Are cracks on the plastic body common?
For comparison, I currently use a HTC Legend, which is a 'one piece' body cut from a single block of aluminium, it's solid as a rock and awesome. I'm wondering how the Atrix would compare...
definitely not comparable to the phone you're using. while i dont mind the plastic back, it is a bit flimsy. however, motorola has released "rugged" battery covers which replace the stock battery cover and also cover the sides of the phone like a case as well, and it is harder thicker plastic with a rubberized outside. i'll be picking one of these up soon hopefully and when i do, i'll post something here.
The Battery cover is pathetic, an the mechanism to open too.
Sorry for my pathetic english.

The build quality is good IMO. It's definitely not rugged though. The main thing about the battery cover is that it's slippery. I almost lost grip several times just removing the Atrix from my pocket (yes hands are clean). An Incipio case fixes that problem .
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=rugged+atrix&x=0&y=0
and this place has the green one (as well as the blue and pink)
http://www.redtagcellular.com/produ...ard-Rubberized-Battery-Door-Cover,-Green.html
they end up costing about the same after shipping.
the stock battery cover really isn't that bad, definitely not a deal breaker
I have no problem with the plastic feel at all, but the lock button drives me nuts!
First of all it's too recessed, and second plenty of times when I press the unlock button phone still doesn't register.
I finally got tired and installed "No lock" just so I can unlock my phone by using the volume rockers.
IMO this is the worse lock button/switch I've ever seen on a phone which is a shame because I love the rest of it.
I'm also guessing that I'm the only one that has a problem with the lock switch since I haven't seen anyone else here really talk about it...
To me the phone is inbetween solid as a rock and satisfactory. Its heavier than most phones Ive used which makes it feel solid. But when you remove the battery cover it makes the phone feel cheap but that is done to get the phone as slim as possible.
The gorilla glass seems to be a lot stronger than what was used on the iphone 4 and doesnt scratch easily. Ive dropped my phone multiple times in its Commuter case and never had an issue. But never have I tested that without a case. IMO every smartphone should be wrapped in a case.

+1, a case is a must.
would rather not have a broken phone just due to dropping it. think of shelling the $30 or so for a good case as a one-payment insurance policy.

Build quality is solid and good for a plastic device. The plastic is hard and doesn't creak, though the back is somewhat flimsy. You have to lower your expectations if you're coming from an all metal device though. This obviously can't compare physically to something that's made from machined aluminium or something.
i didnt like using it until i retrained my print by swiping up instead of down, like the tutorial shows.
HTC will always have topnotch build quality....Atrix is very solid for a plastic backing. Its more solid than the Cappy
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
I use a cheap $4 TPU case from eBay and that makes the phone 10X better, IMO. The phone gets bulkier (of course), but it's def worth it.
As an added bonus, it makes swiping my fingerprint easier.
EDIT: Exactly what I use: http://cgi.ebay.com/TPU-Gel-SOFT-CA...815105?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item19c4325441
$2.75 for making my phone feel awesome. BTW, no, I don't sell that case. Search ebay for "Atrix TPU" and find one you like.

I actually really like the design of the battery cover. It's extremely quick to remove if needed, and the same for putting it back on. Does allow for dust to get in more easily, but also a snap to clean out if needed.
Feels just like my iPhone 3GS did for form factor, but I would say the iPhone was a wee bit more slippery due to the high gloss case finish.
Overall design and build quality are fine imo.
Many thanks for the comments thus far

Thing is, in the Android world, HTC has gained a decent reputation for build quality. But overall, (including pre-Android days) Motorola really were (are?) kings of the build quality game. Hence why comments around build quality are somewhat surprising.
It seems like most of you have cases then? I absolutely hate having a case for any phone I own, it takes away from the design lines of the phone, no to mention the weight, size, aesthetics, etc.
Maybe the question should be: do you feel the build quality is at such a poor level that you feel you *need* a case - because so many of you seem to have one!!

I typically do not like using a case. I think the build quality on the phone is great as others have mentioned previously. It certainly does not "need" a case in imho.
Go for it.

nah your not the only one. this was one of the main reasons why i sold the phone. hitting the home button required too much effort because it was so recessed.
I am coming from a Nexus One and was a little skeptical of the build quality of the Atrix. I went ahead and got the Atrix on release date, have never put a case on it, and really do like the build of it. The back cover wraps around all the corners of the phone and covers the whole back, so if you where to scratch it up you can just replace it and it will be good as new.

Build Quality

HI all
I was wandering how is the build quality in this phone?
I would love to give it to my girlfriend but was just wandering after hearing/reading some negative comments about galaxy s 1 build.
Thank you in advance for any comments, or links to articles or such.
Regards
Kirior
I think it's awesome. Even it's plastic, it's really assertive and the back cover stays so tight. Just the opening is a bit tricky... But you only need to do this once, luckily. If you need to change sim-cards or memory cards daily, then I don't recommend this phone.
Samsung isn't known as "Samsuck" for no reason. Buy her an HTC phone. I would steer clear of any Samsung phones.

To try and add some value to an otherwise useless post, I haven't owned a Samsung phone since the CDMA i730 Windows phone. It was a funky phone without a lot of joy and some really questionable design choices. From there I had a succession of HTC phones spanning six years. They were all solid, ran well, and gave me little to complain about. I got an LG phone which I kept for a whopping three weeks before realizing it was a pile of rubbish. So, with an unbiased view, I chose the Samsuck GS2 and couldn't be happier. Back on topic, the build quality is great. Fit, finish, style, feel are all what you'd expect from a high-end device. Alas, because it's shiny parts are exposed front and back, all that beauty has to be hidden by a case which makes it look pedestrian. I just got my Case-Mate tough case today and the phone now looks mummified. Oh well, at least it's protected.
I really dont understand the questions about build quality the sgs or sgs2. My orignal sgs(vibrant) was heavy duty. Yes its light and yes its made out of plastic. But ive dropped my vibrant from various heights and the battery cover never popped off, no marks on screen or anything. Both phones, specially the sgs2 feel like a lighter, thinner HD2. Niether feels flimsy, cheap, breakable.
One of the Hd2s ive owned fell from bathroom sink to tile floor, and shattered after a 3 -4foot drop.
Build Quality is important to me as I work with dogs(90%) and other various animals. Besides the psycho owners, I deal with psycho 200pound dogs on a daily basis. I get bumped, biten, jumped on, rubbed, attacked etc all day, everyday. Not a single scratch, scrap, dent on the sgs2 and thats with no protection for 3 weeks.
Now the only bad quality choice samsung and other manufactors use is the damn cheap silver/chrome/aluminum bezel around the phones. Since I dont use cases consistently im prone to scratch the bezel by the end of ownership.
Another plus is the couple cases I do have dont add extra bulk like other phones. Im waiting on quality extended batteries to come.
HI guys
Thx for all replies, all in all i have bought SGS2 for her. She is in heavens now i guess that's all that matters and she does take care of the phones so i know i will not land on the floor or such just wanted to make sure.
thanks again and for me the thread is closed.

I find the build quality of the S2 pretty decent although I had my doubts when I just got the phone. After using it for a couple of weeks I think the build quality is fine and I'm sure this phone will last a long time.
However, today I had the HTC Sensation in my hands for the first time and I must confess that the build quality of the Sensaion is clearly better.
The build quality is much better than i expected. Yes, it is plastic, but feels pretty solid, no creaking or flex. I have an SE Arc also, similar thickness, but would say that the gs2 is easily the more high quality build of the two.
Regarding the battery cover, it is thin and flimsy, but i cant imagine a new one costing much if you needed one. What bothers me more is the texture, it feels more slick than a shiny back, but a case might fix that.

Can't say I'm disappointed that it is plastic and not metal. He seemed to drone on about the plastic design. Sure plastic shells can scratch easily, but they stand up better over time than metal ones. I've had several devices metal and plastic, and metal always interferes with signal quality and when it bends, it doesn't bend back into place like plastic does. My TF201 looks terrible with all of its dents and scratches but my Evo 3D with its plastic back and only a little bit of metal around the edge is looking decent (except for the metal which is scratched and nicked.)
What is everyone's deal about plastic? A ceramic coating would have been interesting, but we have already seen the coating chipping off on one model of the HTC One series phones.
EDIT: Ok, so I see I wasn't the only person that found the way he complained about the keys and other nitpicking to be a bit biased and annoying.

I'd have loved it to be HTC Sensation-style,where you can replace the whole housing apart from the screen in the form of a battery cover. That way you just don't give a rat's ass about scratches etc.
Very annoying. Love the phone. Plastic back is better for radio signal. Drop a plastic backed phone and you will get back a scratched but still very much working phone not like a glass backed device. Very easy to tell an I-Phone fan boy. Could not watch or listen to entire video due to the annoying Fan Boy.

Because people are all about looks/aesthetics these days, that's why.... either way I wrap my baby up in a case, so ven if I had an M8 you wouldn't be able to see the "premium, beautiful metal build". FYI I prefer the plastic, doesn't dent or scratch nearly as easy as metal, and less weight, so when/if it does fall, it gets less damage!

the hate is all about because samsung is getting complacent and not changing up the phone exterior.....i mean..it essentially looks like a S4
what i don't like about it is that i think samsung is mass producing too quickly and a lot of phones have random issues here and there like scratched bezels, crooked stuff, mushy home buttons, etc...the QA went downhill
I'm happy with it!
I've never had a problem with touchwiz. This one is more user friendly and maybe more designed for the casual user but I do find things easier now.
The battery life is better than my S3 but all phones seem to start out with battery life being good for the first year then it goes down.
I haven't taken many pictures but I'm not real happy with the camera.

really? compared to my old s2, s3, and s4, the low light photos are PHENOMENAL!!
are you turning on the picture stabilization in low light or HDR? that is the key to good low light photos

yep, its great
the hate is all about because samsung is getting complacent and not changing up the phone exterior.....i mean..it essentially looks like a S4
what i don't like about it is that i think samsung is mass producing too quickly and a lot of phones have random issues here and there like scratched bezels, crooked stuff, mushy home buttons, etc...the QA went downhill

I actually liked the handling of the S4 (might be one of the few who actually did lol!)
I actually have to, but I agree about the bezel. Even tho I really like the look of the S4's bezel, the one of the S5 is pretty horrible lol. I really dont like it at all. But, that alone wouldn't persuade me from getting it.
I'll also admit that the white one feels extremely slippery on the back. Besides using an OtterBox for work every day, I'm not a huge case guy. Soon as i T home each day, I take the Defender off and slip on the Spigen bumper case that I got. Phone almost slipped outta my hands quite a few times already.
Orhan than that, I got no regrets. Very well rounded device. Surely won me over once again compared to HtC

Ya, the white one comes with a more plasticy back versus black is more rubberized

I don't get how this phone has too big of a bezel. I feel like if it were any smaller id be hitting the screen too much. I'm used to a bezel coming from EVO devices so I may be a bit ignorant about it.

Probably the speed of focusing and taking the picture. Trying to get my kids at doing something funny before they have left the room by the time the picture decides to take. I have stabilization turned off.
Outside it bright conditions it takes right away.

The camera is pretty good for a PHONE. Your expectations might be a little high. I mean its hard to get a pic of my kids playing even with my high end cam so to expect this cam to do it is silly

Yes, I agree. I just generally think people are way too picky nowadays and want perfection when it comes to phones. I'm like you, I prefer plastic.

I recently purchased the Galaxy S5 and I have to say, it's one of the best phones I have had. I am yet to have any problems with it and it's just perfect for my everyday use!
Has anyone else got it? What are your thoughts?

The fact that it doesn't do simultaneous voice and data definitely makes it NOT the best phone!

Does any phone do this currently?

Love 99.9% of the Pixel :)

Man this phone is sweet. Display, sound build quality camera software all awesome. But the one thing I do not like at all is the chins on the is phone. Man they are huge. If I compare it to the Nexus 5 or 5X or the 6P these chins are like twice as big. I wonder what the heck Google was thinking when they did that. No screen protector on mine or case, the phone is a tad slippery as well. But I got that $4.99 a month insurance from Google so that should cover me...

I wish I could get the old Nexus ones back. I'll be installing Zedge soon.
Loving it here too, a bit wary of the battery life so far but it is far too early to draw any conclusions as Android does take a while to settle.
Really impressed with how responsive the phone is - passed it around my colleagues at work and they all commented on it.
It is also really nice to be able to sit down with a phone in my pocket without it jabbing me and being uncomfortable like the 6P was.
Agreed. Initially when the pics started leaking and everyone was freaking out about the chins I was thinking "they're not that bad"... Once in hand I was like "yeah, they're bad".
Phone is much taller than it should have been imho.
Loving everything else about it so far though.
Can't wait to get root.

The Pixel phones are made by Asians so they included the chins, just kidding

Comparing to my N5X the fingerprint sensor is higher up, almost to the equivalent increase in chin size. Really feels off when using the fingerprint sensor for me.
Hey how is the vibration motor is it loud and thingy like 5x. Just sold my Nexus 5x and got the free iPhone 7 trade in feels weird having every Nexus phone and of all times having an iPhone. Guys please let me know anything that is bad about the phone

How did you get that? When I purchased the phone, the insurance was a flat rate of $99. I went back and checked and I still don't see a $4.99/month plan. Am I looking in the wrong area?
EDIT: nevermind...I see. You're a Project Fi customer. Y'all get the month-month payments...lucky
I've had the Pixel since Friday but only really spent time with it this afternoon/evening. I also purchased the Axon7 so I ha e been testing that one out up till today. I have to say I do like the Pixel very much. I have no case of screen protector so I was hesitant to use but since I'm 90% sure I'm sending it back I took it to work. Form factor is very nice although I must admit that going from N5x to A7 to Pix I do notice the smaller screen. It's very clean though. Way better than my N5x and not to sure about A7 because I still have factory screen protector on. I can say though it feels very delicate in the hands, like I need to be careful(slippery to). I will straight up admit that if the Pixel was $500 I wouldn't even think twice, it would stay. Just don't think I can justify$730 for a phone. Not with how nice midrange phones are and the price they fetch. Plus I have 7.1.1 on my N5x along with Google Assistant. Who knows though, I still have 8 days left to decide.

$5*24 months = $120, you paid less for insurance though...
Really, the chin is no where near as bad as I thought it would be or how people say it would be.
The design is very consistent, symmetrical and balanced. The front looks like a better version of the iPhone, with the omission of the ugly home button. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the back, even though it has grown in me. If anything, the back is my gripe much more than the chin. Never noticed the bezels.
Sent from my Pixel using XDA-Developers mobile app
Just got mine yesterday, so not much time on it.
I actually think it has really good grip naked compared to other phones, but i always use a slim case.
My only gripes are bezels and some os/launcher options or lack of options. Otherwise it's a near perfect phone for my needs. Google will fix/add some of my concerns in upcoming updates
Yes price is high but it was built to compete with apple/Samsung, so its priced right. Although appl/Samsung are overpriced...hahaha
I put mine on the t-mobile promo, so i will get some credit back. Won't get the full $325 cause i change phones 1-2 times a yr. This one will probably make a full yr.
Hmm I think the chins are about the same as 5X. The 5X did have that front facing speaker on the front. If Pixel had that I think it would save it from being complained about.
yeah... to me the weirdest thing about the bottom chin is that it's just blank. Nothing there except chin -- no button, no speaker, just unused space. Every time I pick up a pixel I just wish they could have made it about 5mm shorter
I'm ok with the chin. Actually the Caseology parallax case changed the way I hold my phone so much I barely even notice (always had a pinky rest on the gigantic chin). The back of this case is amazing for grip.
The only sad thing for me and for lots of others it seems? The downward firing speaker. It sounds clear. It's soo easy to cover. Coming from a 6p and a 5x even, it's just a massive bummer. Even the 5x was aok.

Are you guys using the regular display mode or the srgb one?
In my opinion the colors in the regular mode are too punchy and the srgb is quite nice, just the whites turn quite yellowish unfortunately.
I am completely loving this phone right now. I was a bit weary of it being an HTC phone since my only experience with HTC was the HTC One and it was a TERRIBLE phone all around. The One was probably the worst phone I've ever had, so it left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
Other than that, the (IMO) minimalist feel and the fact that the phone just works is making me very happy. So far that's without root or anything. If there were a way to get unlocked hotspot without root that would be icing on the cake. I probably wouldn't even root or mod anything else if I had hotspot working
