First of all, do not get too excited, you will still need a binary dictionary file (main.dict) to implement in the keyboard.
If you do not know how to get this, I cannot help you as I am pretty sure all the ones I know off are copyrighted.
If you on the other hand know how to find one, it is dead easy implementing the dictionary file in this keyboard.
I used the Gingerbread keyboard from LeeDroid where the & symbol has been fixed (with thanks to -snq).
Using 7-Zip or WinRAR, navigate to /system/app and open LatinIME.apk (still in 7-Zip or WinRAR)
Navigate to res/raw and replace the main.dict with your custom one.
Close up and flash the zip in recovery after making nandroid and toggling verification.
Remember that I am not responsible for any damage you may encounter flashing edited apks!
I have only tested this with Danish, but it should in theory work with any language.
If anyone know of any binary dictionaries that are free to use, you are welcome to post them in this thread.
If you want to contribute making one yourself, then follow the guidelines from google code:
http://code.google.com/p/softkeyboard/wiki/BinaryDictionaries
You are very welcome to post them in this thread afterwards.
Just a quick thought:
Might it be possible to use the word databae from the Hunspell project (http://hunspell.sourceforge.net/)? They are opensource. We would have to think how to transfer the data to google's format. I am very bad in scripting, but I will spend some thoughts on this.

Hi. I am also looking for a danish spell-check (for CM7 on Legend)
What is the purpose in opening the file you have uploaded and navigate to the LatinIME.apk file? When I open it, it wants to install it.
Another noob question, where to find "res/raw" directory?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I live in China and got an already rooted legend from a super friendly little shop in the neighbourhood here, but it came with a horrendous goapk.com rom which severely locked down my ability to install anything from the market - instead, it tried to force me into this relatively useless Chinese goMarket thing. So, waiting patiently, I finally installed the MoDaCo custom ROM last week and everything is running sweetly.
Only now I find I actually miss a couple of the customisations the Chinese ROM had on it. In particular, the htc_cime was very useful to me because it supported handwriting input - the Google Pinyin IME is less useful to Chinese noobs like me who can't read the sound of the characters and need to input the handwriting.
I have had a http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7276627 rummage around these threads and found lots of htc_cime packages, none of which work on Legend under Froyo. Does anybody have a solution? The apk's that do install die immediately when I try to input text, and I don't know what to do with the zip files available on that site - I can extract them, but then it says "Application not installed" without any further help.
Cheers and thanks! Maybe the IME will turn up when 2.2 finally comes out for stock Legends, which will surely happen any minute now
So, a few hundred reads and no replies. Seems like a difficult issue, and obviously not many people are interested in using Chinese handwriting. Should I post this on the development thread? Can anyone at least give some advice on how to install these .zip distribution packages? I know how to install a .apk using the file manager, is some other app necessary to install the .zips?

I just downloaded the .zip file from your link and it had the .apk file inside it and another zip (?).
A zip file is a zip file, they are not android specific, have been around at least 20 years now, it is a compressed file, windows or whatever os you use should be able to open it no problems and then just extract/copy the apk inside to your phones sd card and install it, you also need to open the other zip file INSIDE the zip file (yay recursion) and extract/copy the folder to your sd card as well.
I didn't install it myself as I am still on éclair.
It may be that ZIP files are not Android specific, but to install one you should flash it with ROM Manager or from Clockworkmod Recovery. I don't know if extracting the zip and installing the .apk is working like that. The reason for doing this is mainly because some files cannot be written or replaced when phone is in normal use. From that link I saw it is a signed package (by the name) and it should be installed via ROM Manager or recovery
Hi again,
I tried unzipping the .apk file and installing it, but also no luck. I am fairly sure the .apk installer references the "zi" folder ("zi" means character in Chinese), as that folder seems to contain a lot of files describing the metrics and probably recognition of each character as you write it. Still no luck though.
Using the ROM manager to install packages seems a bit like overkill though - if the Google IME can be installed as an apk without rebooting, surely any IME can be installed like that?
I might ask htc about this when the official 2.2 FOTA comes out, if I claim I had it before and it wasn't in the update they might just send me an .apk that will sort this out once and for all. No big hopes on that one though.
Cheers,
Leon
How to add/remove languages to swype.
Preparation
* Get a tool capable of working in zip files. I use WinRar. WinZip, Total Commander or anything else should also work.
* Get a Swype Version which works on your device (QVGA for Galaxy 3). Install and test it! This is your base - it has to run propperly so you customize it. You can find swype keyboard swype inside a stock rom.
* Check your swype version & download a swype (With any resolution).
* When i refer to "dummyfile.apk", that is always meant without quotation marks.
Customization
* When you find your swype that suits to your device, we start. I refer to it now as "myswype.apk"
* Open "myswype.apk" in WinRar/Total Commander/Winzip/WhateverYouLike - we wont unpack it, we work inside it.
* Delete the "META-INF/" Folder inside "myswype.apk"
* Go to "Assets/Files" inside "myswype.apk"
* Each standard language consists of 3 Files here: "Language.htm", "Language-full.htm", "Language.le" - some complicated languages like korean may consist of up to 5 files.
* Delete the Languages you dont need.
* Dont delete anything else! Important files are "languages.lst", "license.dat", the two "Numbers-XX-Latin1.zkb.le" files, the four "QwertX-XX-Latin1.zkb.le" files and all .png's!
* Now copy additional languages from the other swype with the languages you want here. Of course it is in the same location: "theotherswype.apk/assets/files/" - remember: 3 files per language!
* Open "languages.lst" in any text editor - even notepad will do! (I use Notepad++)
* Write a list of Languages you wanna use here. The name to use is the name of the .htm file without .htm. This is case sensitive!
* The Contents of the original language.lst as an example: "EnglishUS,Spanish,Italian,PortuguesePT,German"
* Open "helplanguages.lst" in any text editor and repeat above steps
* Delete unneeded keyboards from "assets/keyboards/". The "SwypeRef*" are QWERTY default, the rest is self-explaining like QWERTY or AZERTY. There is no way to see what language needs what keyboard. You either know or you have to test.
* Delete chinese help-file from "res/raw/dict_pinyin.mp3". It's only needed if you use chinese.
* Recheck all your steps and close your zip-tool!
Optional: Customize Skin and Sound
* If you wanna change the skin, modify the .png files at "myswype.apk/assets/keyboards" - the other .png files in the .apk are only for tutorial and help.
* There are some skins at XDA forum, which already made it to a custom .apk file.
* The one and only soundfile, played when typing or finishing a word, is located at "myswype.apk/res/raw/beep.mp3" - change this if you like
Finalization
* Download a sign tool from xda (Auto-apk-tool v1.0.7 its nice)
* Open it and press "10". Drag "myswype.apk" to the command and press enter.
* A file will be created (myswype_signed.apk).
* Thats it! you are done! install the .apk and have a nice day!
Troubleshooting
* If you find your language not working, that usually got one of 3 Reasons:
* You messed something up. Recheck your "language.lst" and "helperlanguage.lst" file and see if you have all needed language files in "assets/files"
* Your language is not allowed by our included license file. That happens a lot with new languages like the Chinese in 2.10.52. Users reported workarounds with renaming the language to some supported language. Like renaming Serbian to Croation.
* The language files you got are not supported by the latest swype version. Rule of thumb is, 1.x swype language files wont work with 2.x language files, but 2.x language files are compatible with each other. As far as i know this rule applys in most but not all cases. So search for another swype version containing your desired language and try that file.
* We obtained another license file. Right now, it is unknown which languages it supports, but it is from swype 2.7 asia galaxy s. the license we currently use is 2.4.44 based. give it a try, it might work with your language. please also give feedback, which language works/doesnt work. copy it it "assets/files/" and overwrite the exiting license.dat
* Swype languages from swype 2.XX dont work on swype 3.XX!

I havent tried it but it will work
I have installed Swype 3.xx from official site and procedure. Licensed.
Worked at first but after reboot, it started giving FCs. Nothing else can be done with anything related to swype now. I do have the apk backed up. Using that backed up apk, i re-installed it but now it says Invalid License and will work with limited functionality. which is basically no swyping at all!!
How do I get it to work again???
I did a search for "Auto-apk-tool v1.0.7" but results showed me only earlier versions.
Where can I get the version you mentioned?

Not working.
Used AutoApkTool you provided. Signed my Swype 3.xx.apk. Got a resulting Swype 3.xx_signed.apk.
Copied to SD.
Then using Root Explorer, copied apk to /system/app
Went to Locale & Text...
Saw Swype Settings (but the was no "Enable Swype" checkbox)
Tried entering Swype Settings. Gives force close.
Uninstalled!!
Went to SD. Tried installing directly by clicking on the Signed.apk.
Installed like any normal app.
Went to Locale & Text...
Saw Swype Settings (this time, there was "Enable Swype" checkbox also)
Checked it.
Entered Swype Settings. Language, audio & vibration were grayed out, cant select (not that i want them though )
Went to text input box, new message compose.
Selected Swype as Input Method.
BACK TO SQUARE ONE. "Invalid License. Will have limited functionality"
Cant SWYPE at all!!!
Yeah. If you take swype beta, you need a licence (which mean you need a cracked swype 3 qvga). So you can take one from a rom, or you should find one (type "mobilism swype" in google)

Didnt sign it again as I saw it was already signed.
Installed it like any other app.
Exellent guide. 5 stars . Thanks
how can I get Swype Keyboard v3.25 from your rom? Do I have to install it first and then find swype on my Galaxy 3? Can sbd upload it here?
I know this thread is probably forgotten (which is a shame, its great) but I feel like responding regardless.
1. Extracting Swype from a rom:
windows- "Disk internals linux reader" can do apparently do it for windows. Thanks -Vinne2-
linux-extract factroryfs.rfs from the rom .tar. in a terminal cd to the folder with the file, then run (as root)
Code:
#mkdir mount
#mount -o -loop factoryfs.rfs mount
now the folder mount will be like the system folder in yourt phone, so go to the folder app and copy Swype.apk somewhere else.
mac - I don't have mac experience, but I think there might be a method similar to the one above for linux
Phone
Flash the rom, copy the file from /system/app/ (of course)
Put factoryfs.rfs on your sd card, do the same as for linux (isn't it great when your smartphone can do something that windows cant )
2. Installing your SwypeIf you want to install it as a system app, you also have to put libSwypeCore.so in /system/lib. You can find libSwypeCore.so in the Swype apk in the lib folder. If you do this you can also delete the lib folder from the apk to save more space!
You can install it like a normal app (will go to data).
3. Signing the apk / -linuxThere is no auto apk tool for linux so I made this script (well I didn't actually make it, I stripped down APK manager, so credits to Daneshm90( java is required, and I guess a chmod 755 may be necessary.
Extract, place the apk as Swype.apk in the "Swype-signing" folder, then run the script
Code:
$chmod 755 Script.sh
$./Script.sh
P.S. There was something else I wanted to say,... oh yeah, I dont know if I can post Swype here so if somebody wants it, I can send them the one from kyrillos's cm7/gingy rom (the 20+mb one with a lot of languages), just pm me and hopefully I'll see it soon afterwards .
I still have the feeling that I'm forgetting something
eidt: forgot the attachment
edit 2: forgot that our phone is linux based, updated the part about getting Swype.apk from a rom

Hey chaps,
the Swype that comes with any Samsung is version 3.26.92.39150, it comes with many language options but with no arabic. This guy has an earleir version of swype with arabic. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588906
Can you please do me an apk file with arabic files from the link above into a swype of version 3.26.92.39150? Thanks. I tried the steps from the 1st post, but it aint working. I even tried this but did not work:
Rename arabic files to greek ones, and replace the original greek files, in a plan to select greek, but get arabic. but it aint working.
Please advise.
I have a Samsung Note 3 with Swype that allows me to download some additional languages, does anyone know where those language files are located? Thanks.

I'm trying to add portuguese language using swype "add language" function but every try show me "error" so I want to download manually the language dictionary and also add manually to the direction/file where could be located and be "readable" by swype.

HOW TO:
First donwload apktool:
https://code.google.com/p/android-apktool/
Windows:
Download apktool-install-windows-* file
Download apktool-* file
Unpack both to your Windows directory
Linux:
Download apktool-install-linux-* file
Download apktool-* file
Unpack both to /usr/local/bin directory (you must have root permissions)
Mac OS X:
Download apktool-install-macos-* file
Download apktool-* file
Unpack both to /usr/local/bin directory (you must have root permissions)
When you have the executable know you can run the comand in all the directories of your computer.
HOW TO extract apk
Go to the rute were it is the apk with cd.
If it is a system apk you need to do this:
Pick up framework-res.apk of your rom.
and type this:
apktool if framework-res.apk
If it is a normal apk do not do this step
Then tipe this:
apktool d name of your apk
It will started to descompile it.
When it done it will create a FOLDER call with the name of the APK.
Go to it.
Enter in this rute: res/values/ and there most of the time is string.xml doccument to translate.
copy it create a FOLDER in res/ name it values- the initials of your country for example. Spain is es
Then in that folder paste the string.xml, open it with a XML editor or any other.
Then translate to your language.
When you finish translating it.
Type this comand:
apktool b name of folder
Wait it will start to compile.
When it finnish go to NAME of the folder/ dist/ and there will be the application you translate.
If it need sign used APK-MANAGER to sign it.
All done take a rest.

Hello,
I've exactly done what you described, tried with APKTool and Multitool. I carefully watched out not to touch anything else but the XML I'm wanting to adjust. After I did my changes I recompiled, signed and installed, which was no problem. Unfortunately the app is not running properly anymore, online functions don't work etc.
So I tried not to change anything, just decompiling and immediately after I recompiled the apk and signed it. Same thing, I can easily install but it doesn't run properly. Is it possible the app only runs with the developers private key? Can anyone help me on this please?
Thanks
i tried apktool to translate an apk file but after decompile there is no any res folder to find strings.xml file?
i did copy the strings.xml file from res/values folder & translated & then pasted to new folder res/values-en according to the country & then i recompiled the apk file but it still shows in same old language?

Do u successful to translate app?
No, there's no way if developer signed with his private key. Though I did stagger over one thread at stackoverflow.com where someone posted a method recompiling and signing with a public key. Didn't follow it in the end, sometimes it pisses me off how devs from normal paid apps make it impossible to just change the strings.xml but then coming to our translation thread to plea for free translation. Mostly when I did translate an app which I like I send my strings.xml to the dev anyway. It would be much more if I wasn't blocked from running the app after signing. That all said, of course I understand the importance of piracy protection, just don't know if this is the right way.

Here is a method for editing xml files directly on from your phone (as well as a fully functional Eclipse compatible IDE). I'm going to sleep so I'll post a reply I made in another thread first, and clean up in the morning. Have fun..G'night!

No, you can edit them on your phone. Axel is one of the apps to use. The second is an IDE called AIDE which is compatible with Eclipse. You can develop, program and publish complete apps from your phone. I figured out how to edit compiled xml the other day. Ninjamorph is also useful because it unpacks the archives into a project which happens to be near where your AIDE projects are.
Begin by opening ninjamorph and choosing the apk to work on and create a project (can do this manually but keep a back up of the apk). Next, open AIDE and create a new project. As an example I'll be editing the lg_allapps_button_text.xml file in LGHome.apk (LG's launcher on G2, so files may differ for you). Choose the HelloWorld setup as that's the less, cluttered one. After creating the project, open up a file manager (you can do this from within AIDE as well) and create the same directory structure for your xml file (probably doesn't matter if a ../res/color xml file is in ../main..but it's good practice. The xml I'm editing is in /res/color, so I'll go into the project directory and create a ../res/color folder.
Now open Axel up and find the xml in the ninjamorph project that you are editing. Again in my case it'll be in /res/color. Go ahead and open it with Axel. Don't bother editing it here, we're going to just go into settings and "save as" (into our AIDE project directory) ../res/color/lg_allapps_button_text.xml. This adds it into our AIDE project and we can now go back into AIDE. In the oberflow action, choose "Goto Files" or whatever it's named (also an icon at the top for this action). It'll open a pane at the bottom with your project files. At this time you'll probably notice AIDE throwing a lot of errors (errors in your code, not app errors lol).
We have to fix every one of them before finish, so might as well start now before editing. Conversely, you could do this in Axel first once you know what kind of errors to expect and fix. In my case, I see two errors because the file is really small. Once clicking on the xml I want to edit in the files pane, I can see that it's telling me string values aren't allowed in the "color' attribute. The color is black but when Axel decompiled it, it changed it from it's ARGB form. I see this -
Code:
#xml namespace blah blah...
.....
....... android:color="1F000008/0xFF000000"
Of course there is more, I just highlighted the attribute I need to fix. You're going to need to learn how attributes need to be formatted or learn and keep a reference handy. Google has nice guides online for building android apps. In this case we change it to:
Code:
...
.... android:color="#FF000000"
Technically yes it's still a string, and yes the wrong format was hexadecimal (sort of), but now we have one less error. On large xmls, this gets annoying but you'll get fast at it. So, I've fixed, myerrors, so now for simplicity I'll just change the color on one of the attributes..to red ("#FFFF0000"). Now that edits are done and errors done, go back in the ooverflow action and scro, down and either click "Run" or "More" and then "Rebuild Project". We aren't worried about any other file, we just want our xml recompiled. Once it's done, if you want you can install your fancy Hello World app (or Tetris game app), lol but it's just as well if you choose not to.
Next, go back into your file manager and find your way back into your AIDE project directory. Locate the bin folder (where your compiled project will be) and navigate to your xml. Again, in my case, I'll be going to /res/color. Make sure you find the compiled version (the binary one with all the cool symbols). Copy this back into the same structure inside the ninjamorph project folder. If you aren't using ninjamorph and manually doing this then make sure you have a backup apk handy and akip the ninjamorph stuff.
Opem Ninjamorph back up and choose to complete your project. Once it's done repackaging it'll ask you if you want to resign the apk
Follow Steven's directions and dont sign it if its a system apk. Next he'll ask about zipaligning (i think?). I don't choose this option at all. If my mods work, then I'll redo the project and choose that option. Problem is, sometimes it can cause issues and you don't want to add more variables in until you know that all,is working or you'll be asking yourself "wonder if my edits were bad,or the zipalignment".
Ninjamorph will create a backup of the apk for you, and now you'll be given the option of installing the apk. You should know what you're doing already but...if using TWRP you can go ahead and replace the modded apk and reboot. Worst that'll happen is boot loops or force closes and you can manually go into recovery and use TWRP's file manager to copy your backup back (may need to mount /system first, and may need to chmod as well. Then try again. If you boot up and all is well, congrats! If using CWM, make sure you have a recovery plan before making the switch.
I have no clue if,there's any easier way. I'm still working on it. Granted, kf you're just going to edit a color like in my example it'd be MUCH easier just using a hex editor. AIDE is a pretty damn slick app as it also supports native mode C/C++ for developing codecs, drivers,,etc. For $8 you can purchase full version with support for larger projects and github and a few other things.
This method should work on any device that can run all those apps. I'm using a LG G2. I'm not the, developer of any of tbose apps so don't come to me if they aren't working: )
