Hi,
I live in China and got an already rooted legend from a super friendly little shop in the neighbourhood here, but it came with a horrendous goapk.com rom which severely locked down my ability to install anything from the market - instead, it tried to force me into this relatively useless Chinese goMarket thing. So, waiting patiently, I finally installed the MoDaCo custom ROM last week and everything is running sweetly.
Only now I find I actually miss a couple of the customisations the Chinese ROM had on it. In particular, the htc_cime was very useful to me because it supported handwriting input - the Google Pinyin IME is less useful to Chinese noobs like me who can't read the sound of the characters and need to input the handwriting.
I have had a http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7276627 rummage around these threads and found lots of htc_cime packages, none of which work on Legend under Froyo. Does anybody have a solution? The apk's that do install die immediately when I try to input text, and I don't know what to do with the zip files available on that site - I can extract them, but then it says "Application not installed" without any further help.
Cheers and thanks! Maybe the IME will turn up when 2.2 finally comes out for stock Legends, which will surely happen any minute now
So, a few hundred reads and no replies. Seems like a difficult issue, and obviously not many people are interested in using Chinese handwriting. Should I post this on the development thread? Can anyone at least give some advice on how to install these .zip distribution packages? I know how to install a .apk using the file manager, is some other app necessary to install the .zips?

I just downloaded the .zip file from your link and it had the .apk file inside it and another zip (?).
A zip file is a zip file, they are not android specific, have been around at least 20 years now, it is a compressed file, windows or whatever os you use should be able to open it no problems and then just extract/copy the apk inside to your phones sd card and install it, you also need to open the other zip file INSIDE the zip file (yay recursion) and extract/copy the folder to your sd card as well.
I didn't install it myself as I am still on éclair.
It may be that ZIP files are not Android specific, but to install one you should flash it with ROM Manager or from Clockworkmod Recovery. I don't know if extracting the zip and installing the .apk is working like that. The reason for doing this is mainly because some files cannot be written or replaced when phone is in normal use. From that link I saw it is a signed package (by the name) and it should be installed via ROM Manager or recovery
Hi again,
I tried unzipping the .apk file and installing it, but also no luck. I am fairly sure the .apk installer references the "zi" folder ("zi" means character in Chinese), as that folder seems to contain a lot of files describing the metrics and probably recognition of each character as you write it. Still no luck though.
Using the ROM manager to install packages seems a bit like overkill though - if the Google IME can be installed as an apk without rebooting, surely any IME can be installed like that?
I might ask htc about this when the official 2.2 FOTA comes out, if I claim I had it before and it wasn't in the update they might just send me an .apk that will sort this out once and for all. No big hopes on that one though.
Cheers,
Leon

Does anyone know where i could get the apk for the htc smart dialer and contacts applications found in the rogers build?
Android Market. 3 day free trial and then £2.99
Thanks, but that is not what i mean. What i am talking about are custom applications made by htc that only appear on their custom builds, not in the market. I wanted to see if there was a way of obtaining them similar to the way of obtaining htc's custom keyboard.

You could download a Roger's ROM from the dream forum and extract the .apks from there.
@thefoss
could you explain how that is done; just from the point where you extract the rogers rom.
Well I tried installing the HTC Contacts and Dialer APK from the hero build but no success says it will NOT install on This Phone. Even tried the Smart Dialer from the Market and does the same thing.
OH by the way I tried to install them on my Mytouch 3G with no success Someone help us out on this Plz

Your def not moving over htc dialer and contacts to mytouch with out root. Its not just not happening right now. And superdial from the market installs just fine
That app is SLOW :/
If you really want all HTC stuff simply install HTC image...
The problem is that you'll need to install lot of HTC stuff with that dialer...
The idea is cool but... slow :/
HERO applications will NOT work on NON-HERO ROM's.
The HTC Smart Dialer and Contacts is NOT A HERO APPLICATION

Go here and download the Rogers-Wiped Nandroid image. When you unzip that package there will be a collection of .img files. Go here and download Unyaffs (I have only used it on Ubuntu and I have no idea how it will work on Windows) and put it in your android-sdk/tools directory (assuming this has been added to your PATH). Make a directory called system and cd into it. Use unyaffs to extract the system.img file that you downloaded
Code:
unyaffs system.img
In that system folder there should be a bunch of folders and a few files. Look in the app folder. You will see the .apk files there.
Hope this has helped a bit!
i guess the mytouch has to be rooted for this to work on it. they wont install via appmanager, but why does htc_ime.apk work and these wont. im guessing because they are system files. yeah im a noob
Make sure you have the install from "Unknown Sources" checked... Then try again. It is in the APP manager under settings.
ive rooted my mytouch, and the apk's wont install on cyanogen 32B 3.9.9.1
i would really like to know about this as well. my mytouch doesnt have a rooted rom on it but i do have superuser permissions. can i push it using adb? i wouldnt know what commands to use.
I wanted to bring back this thread because I have the same question as the above 2 posters.
Does anyone know why the apk installer wont install the contacts apk (my phone is rooted, and I pulled the apk from a rom that I've used on this phone)?
those HTC utilities are not open source, hence they are not included in any of the cyanogen mods. the HTC framework that is needed for them to work is simply not present.
your only option is to get a rom for the rogers/tim etc which does include them..
Extracted htc_contacts.apk
I've extracted the file htc_contacts.apk and I've opened with Archive manager under Ubuntu.
I've found many many XML files, some certs... I think the installer check the phone model and then says You cannot install the apk. But if the apk is the only source for installatione, we could find the controls in it.
Am I wrong?
Hello
i've downloaded Android 2.0.1, launched and installed. When i click con Android icon, it's starts but after finding rootfs it stops because it can't find "system.img".

This SHOULD be posted in 'question' forum...not in the main forum....
Anyway, HOW did you install it? from Cab or from Zip?
Either way, you've not carried out one of the instructions... I'd recommend you try again and read every single little note on the installation instructions.
It's very easy to get excited and want to run Android quickly, and accidentally miss and installation step.
So, you need to explain WHICH version of Android you've installed, what device you have, what steps you THINK you took etc.
p.s.
If you installed using my zip, the number on common error is that people don't perform the mortscript setup / installer after unzipping (this is not necessary using the cab version).
Also some folks install to their device when they SHOULD install to their SD Card
Also, some folks extract the zip without the folder structure
All of these are common mistakes
Oh, and the other common issue is install OVER an existing installation... sometimes this can be done, sometimes it can't. If you want a simple life, never do this
delete evrything and re-try! this should help!
Ok Thanks and sorry for the position of this thread
With cab it can't run so i've downloaded only the zip and extracted into SD....
i can only on thing : "It's FANTASTIC" :O
Can i ask you one more thing ? i've see that i can install new apps and games from market, but how can i install new themes? i need another app?
At the end... how can i boot Android when i power up my Blackstone without passing throw WM6.5 ? Thanks!!
I flashed nonsensikal 8.2 to my Eris and attempted to load my apps back. I have one called vRecorder, which contrary to popular opinion, worked great for recording phone calls. However, when I attempted to reload it I found it is unavailable and no longer supported. After trying several other call recorders, all failures, I'm left with trying to install my old one. The problem is, it isn't a .apk file, it's a .zip file. I originally downloaded this off the market, but since then the developer has packed up his bags and I can't get in touch with them. The .zip file located in the /data/app folder contains the following files:
AndroidManifest.xml
res (folder which contains four more folders all of which contain image and xml files)
resources.arsc
Since I cannot back this up using Astro and it's a zip format, is there any way to either convert it to .apk or flash it like a rom? I tried simply renaming it to apk and it acted like it installed, but gave me the message saying 'application not installed' when it completed. Any help would be appreciated.

Try resigning it. You can find out how to do that in the Eris roll up thread
rename it back to zip... pull it to your computer... then adb install -r appname.zip
Actually just rename it to a .apk

I already tried renaming it and installing it that way but after I ran it, it went through the install process and ended with the message "Application not installed." I will try what vinylfreak89 suggested by installing SDK on my pc and trying the adb install. I'm also trying to find how to resign in the rollup thread. I'll let you know how it goes.
Are you sure the program didn't download to the phone's DATA/APP folder as a ZIP as well as an APK in DATA/APP-PRIVATE?
I am having the same problem re-installing with a 'protected' Market program.
My app-private folder is empty (using Root Explorer). However, I found a call recorder that seems to be working for me. It's called rVoix and can be found in thread 806451 in this forum.
My Eris has been rooted and I'm using nonsensikal 8.2 black rom (I highly recommend this rom, it's awesome).
Did you nandroid before you flashed the new rom? If so, restore the old rom, use titanium to back up the app, nandroid back to the current rom, and restore the app.

I have invited a couple of chefs to add this package to their ROMs if they are interested. I am surprised there is not more interest.
This is the package for AmazonMP3 that is working now. I extracted it using HTC ROM Image Editor from the new T-Mobile Leo 3.14.531.1 ROM for HD2.
The old AmazonMP3 cab that has been around since February never worked - you could search, browse, even sample songs, but it would not authenticate with Amazon servers. I flashed the new TMOUS ROM to my HD2 just to test this new version and it worked. The only requirement is to have an Amazon account, and "1-click purchase" turned on, but thats it!
I then extracted the package, and installed it on my Elegancia ROM, but was not sure exactly which folders to put some of the files - I had tried to manually copy files from a fully flashed ROM and put them in the same folders on my phone, but it failed to fully authenticate. So with this package, I just put all the files in a single folder on my SD card It works!
This is NOT the way I like to do things, even though it works correctly - It even keeps a download history. So,here is the full package, all set for adding into someones kitchen, or, better still, making a nice cab for the community.
Package attached.
Link to T-Mobile Official Update: http://dl.htc.com/ruudownload/t-mobi....aspx?pid=leo2
Here's a link to the leaked version of the ROM that Football posted about 3-4 weeks before the official one was released. Not sure if it has the same package as I did not have time to check. Providing the link in case you do not have a serial number that allows download of the official:

Im going to sound like a noob and im sorry in advance but i downloaded your file and went to unzip it on my computer and there is nothing there at all. Maybe its something i am doing. I dont know. Next off is there any way you can just make this into a cab file like the old one was? I am very interested in this and flashed the t-mobile rom just because of this file.
This is only a empty zip file...

If you read a bit closer, I state (perhaps not too clearly) that this is as much as I could accomplish. I COULD make a cab, but I do not know how to make one for a package of this type. (To install it all in the correct folders) In fact, I am still poking around the TMOUS 3.14 ROM for a provisioning file that shows what an installers steps would be... I put the package up with the hope that someone more familiar with that would either make a cab (preferably) or incorporate the package in their ROM (good, if I can use that ROM, LOL)

what about the fact that there is nothing in the zip file??
**** Hey disregard this cause i just redownloaded it now. thanks buddy
Hi Guys!
Now that finally the devs arrived with some amazing ROMs, I change these ROMs a lot every day. But I experienced some problems because I often do that at work where I don't have adb shell available. So I created an xRecovery zip-file to install Android Terminal Emulator before booting into the ROM the first time.
That gave me the idea to offer you some zip-files with useful (free) applications you perhaps want to have pre-installed on any ROM before booting it.
I also attached two blank zip-files where you can easily add your own apps, perhaps a preferred keyboard in your language or whatever you want to push onto your phone via xRecovery.
If somebody's interested we could turn this into some kind of collection for universally usable xRecovery files.
How to use the blank zip-files:
To use this method, you need to have the app available as an apk-file, of course.
If you have the app already installed on the ROM you're looking to replace, you can just use a root file manager like Root Explorer to copy and paste the apk file from \data\app\ to your SD card.
If you cannot get the apk file, you can request it here or send me a PM and I'll try to prepare the zip-file for you. Don't ask me to do this with paid apps! This whole method is meant to be used with free apps and I will not add or support warez in any form!
Okay, now let's start. As you can see, I attached two blank zip-files: blank_data-app.zip and blank_system-app.zip. Why two of them?
There are basically two locations where you'll want to install your own apk's:
\data\app\ --> contains all non-system-relevant user apps and should be your choice in most cases. If you install here, you can easily uninstall the apps later if you don't need them anymore.
\system\app\ --> contains system-relevant and pre-installed apps such as vending.apk / phonebook.apk / Email.apk / Gmail.apk / Calender.apk / etc.
Only install here if you want to replace one of these apps with a themed one or if you want to force-update market for example! It's not possible to uninstall anything you installed here the usual way! You'll have to use Titanium Backup or another third-party app.
Only overwrite existing apps in this folder if you know what you're doing!
So, just choose where you want to install your app, open (NOT extract!) the corresponding file with a zip-file manager of your choice (I'd recommend 7Zip or WinRAR) and drag the apk-file you want to install into data\app\ (for blank_data-app.zip) or system\app\ (for blank_system-app.zip. pretty obvious, huh? ). Confirm to copy the file there and close the zip file.
That's it. Now you just have to give your zip-file an appropriate name and push it onto your SD card to install it via xRecovery-->install custom zip-->choose custom zip from sdcard.

Some comments on the zip-files attached:
- Android_Terminal_Emulator.zip:
This is useful if you installed a new ROM and experience problems like flashing homescreen or no GSM/data connection. In that case, open ATE and type the following:
su (confirm SuperUser rights)
busybox killall servicemanager

This will restart the phone and hopefully solve your problems. (I know this mini guide seems not to fit here, but perhaps someone reads it before spamming the dev thread with questions that were answered a thousand times )
- JIT_Enabler_v2-zdz.zip:
all KUDOS go to zdzihu. Make sure you visit his thread to always get the latest version of JIT Enabler.
Note that you only need this file on 2.1 ROMs where JIT Enabler isn't pre-enabled! On 2.2+ ROMs JIT is always included.
- New Market V2.2.11.zip:
Make sure to sign into your google account and open market once (accept licence agreement) before you update to the new market. Many people experience problems if they don't do this!
- TitaniumBackup-3.6.7.1.zip:
You can also create this file yourself. If you open TB and tap on Settings-->more... there's an option to create an update.zip
- XDA_app.zip:
Useful for any kind of problems of course

So, not much of a collection at the moment, but perhaps there's interest for something like that. If you know something that will come handy to have it preinstalled, just tell me!

As long as the apps aren't system-relevan, it's as easy as that, yes
For all of you willing to learn more: I'm quite a noob, too, but I'll try to make a tutorial on how to create recovery zip-files as soon as I can.

Is it possible to create one zip to install several apk's?
Maybe I have a few "stock" apps, the ones that I always need, and want to install all in a single step.
Can this be done or I have to install one by one even using xRecovery?
Thanks!

Firstly, the xRecovery depends upon its version of busybox. In the version I use it is 1. 15. 3
So re-install xRecovery(just in case).
Secondly, u don't hv to keep the back key pressed but tap it a few times repeatedly during the screen with "Sony Ericsson" logo.
Hope this helps.

hey im having a problem.
I know that you will say "this belong to another thread" but since this way i can trick the thing and install again the system apps like the Package administrator etc, i need to know what to do in mi case with this method:
mi BETA3 was working smooth!
iv been using the BETA3 a long time but some days ago, suddently i couldn't install apps anymore (thouse that are in mi SD or frome the market...not even Applanet...nothing)
The screen shows the "barber shop black and white" bar rolling and rolling and never stop.
Mi USB detection is not working, that means that mi PC is recognazing the phone (it sound like a UYSB is been conected) but never apear the folder of the SD. nto even options of debugging usb etc in the notification bar of the device.
and when i get in Settings> runing aplications, all aplication are in "calculating..." mode. so they say 00 mb. and never stop triying to get the numbers. its so odd.
the other aplication (that came installed with the BETA) works fine.
I have tryed, erasing the firmwares and isntalling them from the beginning and everything worked fine with old firms like 2.0 and 2.1 update1. too!
then i do the root (first z4root, then busybox, then xRecovery) and make xrecovery work. install the beta 3, and again i can't do anything.
i triyed installing the BETA4 but never stop rebooting so i just yield and stick with BETA3.
any idea..plzzz!!! i really don't whon't to use Eclair...it's just so ugly!!
it's not working on mi xRecovery. i put the apps insinde app folder of thwe .zip and put it in a random folder of mi SD, then do >the Recovery > install custom.zip>Choose from SD card>confirm install the selected "blank_data-app.zip".
and it say:
Finding update package.....
opening update package.....
E i asume E means Error!) can't open blablabla/blblabla folder/blank_data-app.zip (bad)
installation Abnorted.
i asume iv done something wrong...!?!?
PS: BTW can somebody sen me the original .apk of FROYO bwecasue i can't find them , to use the system-apps.zip
thanxxx!!!
