[Q] Completed DJ05 install successfully, but have a question. - Fascinate General

This is my first post on this forum just want to say all of you guys are great. I have a verizon fascinate, i rooted, installed the DJ05 radio (modem), installed stockDJ05 rom, and 1212 test kernel. Then i installed the Blackhole 2.3 rom from sonofskywalker..All done successfully! BUT heres my question, I heard its good to wipe data and cache between flashing roms, and i dont know if this is going to affect the DJ05 "Radio"(modem). Is it safe to wipe data and cache through CLOCKWORK?

Data and cache refer to user generated data not ROM/Kernel/Radio data. The modem you installed will not be wiped in the Clockwork wipe data and cache process.

Thank you! I was also wondering, since i installed the blackhole2.3(dj05)ROM, does that mean i dont even need the stock(dj05)ROM??
Just not sure and would like to know.

This is like comparing a Jona Gold apple to a Golden Delicious apple. They are both apples and you either eat one or the other. Well normally anyway. The stock ROM is just the leaked factory DJ05 ROM. The blackhole 2.3 DJ05 is the result of someone, with greater skills then I possess, taking that stock ROM and modifying it to their (and maybe your) liking. They are both ROM's.

thanks once again!

I'm going to give this a shot this weekend. Probably a stupid question but better to ask than not - I need to flash the DJ05 modem before I can flash any ROM (stock, BH, SC, etc.), correct? So it would be -
1. Modem
2. Choice of ROM
3. Choice of kernel
Thanks in advance.

Yes, that is what you would want to do.

On the Motorola Droid when you switched ROMs it was just fine to format everything listed in ClockworkMod Recovery. Is this the case for the Samsung Fascinate or is there extraneous data left over even after formatting all through ClockworkMod?

If you format everything listed in CWM, there shouldn't be anything lingering on the phone. You don't actually have to format data or cache when flashing if you don't want to. I never format data unless I start having issues that I can't fix any other way.

I like your explanation. Can you make a similiar, easy to understand explanation for the differences in kernels. Thanks

This is correct.
But, do not fret too much. It's like chicken and egg. I guess I flashed ROM first and then modem, and I am still fine. You do not have absolutely virgin phone with empty memory anyway. So, whatever you do, something will be first and another thing second, because of sequential nature of the flashing process. It is fine to have this discrepancy while you flash.
Just make sure that when you going to ACTUALLY USE the phone everything is in sync.

[Q] regarding dj01/05/09, voodoo, OTA updates, adb. NOOB

got this phone about 2 months ago.
went and did the the tutorial "HOW TO ROOT..." etc: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798064
when i did it, it told me to install voodoo so i did. I dont even know if i have voodoo4 or voodoo5.
luckily everything went fine.I came back to the site today just to see if there was anything new on here.
then i read this that was a response in the stickies: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869370
seems like voodoo sucks and i dont even really need it.
questions:
1)since i have voodoo on here, is there anything that I should NOT do?
2)how can i find out if i have 4 or 5
3)I went to the "completely remove voodoo" thread and at the top it says that it will wipe all my data off my phone if i remove it. WTF?? no contacts or apps??
4)someone said geekniks kernals are better. should i get rid of voodoo and get that instead? do i even need it?
5)what exactly is a rom
6)what is the benefits/dangers of putting on a rom like "superclean"(got the most votes)
7)can someone define what dj01 dj05 and dj09 are?? also define what adb is?
8) have there been any OTA updates? i havent gotten any notifications.
9)will going back to stock also erase all my data?
i know its a lot but i really need help. thank you!

hey, at least it's in the general section..not development.
Voodoo is the greatest thing sense sliced bread... Far better than stock.. If your gonna just start flashing things based on other ppls opinions rather than a need or want of different functionalities. Then there is no reason for you to flash anything.. Until a need rises, or you research something that you feel will add to your experience. Stick with what you have..
Rocking dj05 and jt's voodoo 5
anyone else want to help?

3. Yes it will remove all apps, contacts and data. You can always use Titanium Backup and restore later.
4. Its all about need and preference. All the devs work hard on all of their kernels. They are all good, it is what you need. I have not found a need yet so i am still running stock DL09 rooted and themed.
6. Benefits of putting a custom rom is user experience, AOSP rom will give you the closest experience to stock android that Samsung hasn't screwed with and made it worse.
7. The difference between these are updates pushed out from samsung and verizon. DJ05 was never released officially but the devs here made it work great. Fixed issues like GPS. They are all Maintenance releases though that are not necessary but usually helpful.
8. DI01 and DL09 are OTA updates. You did not get them because you are rooted and running a custom rom.
9. You pretty much asked in 3. But yes it will format to a stock image.
10. Do your research next time. All the info has been posted here in all of the threads, multiple times. I am more than willing to answer, but like everyone says, use the search button going forward.
11. As stated above you should not modify what you have unless you have a need for it or actually a use. My phone is rooted, themed, and modified in other various ways. My Wifes is bone stock and doesn't want me to touch it.(Even though she gets pissed off at the lag.) Always make a backup with Rom manager and Titanium Backup in case sh!t goes wrong.
Leave your phone as is.
BE HAPPY!!

shouldnt i have at least gotten a verizon message telling me of the update?
how should i go about keeping my phone up to date now?
Dont I have to know which version I have before I put kernals and roms on here? How do i go about doing that?

AOSP Questions

Bear with me guys......haven't posted much on here, more of a lurker.
I have been following the AOSP Rom for the Fascinate for the last two weeks and now with the MMS working I would love to give it a shot. I have a couple of questions before I get started.
I am currently running ComRom 2.1 with the PBJ-50 Kernel. No themes or anything like that.
1. Is it safe to just do a data wipe and factory reset then just install the Rom over top of what I have?
2. Is there a Kernel and a Modem with the ROM?
3. Anything special I need to know if I decide to go back to another Rom (from what I have read just ODIN back to stock and Rom away)?
Sorry if these have been answered already.....I searched and did not find my answers. Thank you for your time.

1. I couldn't answer this with certainty as I haven't flashed it myself and haven't yet dug through the CM7 thread in development to put together correct steps
2. yes there is, but you can flash a custom kernel like OTB or the gingerbread leaks' (ec09) modem as I've seen these work though not for everyone
3. as far as I know all you need to do to go back is just odin back to eclair/froyo with the 2.2 atlas pit file and proceed from there
don't have any experience with CM7 other than what I've read so someone who's done it could probably shed more light on this
tapatalked from my GINGERBANGED Fascinate
I just flashed cm7 today...
1. Data wipe, cache and factory reset should be enough. You need to download and install the 7/04 build, let it boot up and reboot back into recovery and then install the 7/13 build and then the gapps. There is also a modified cwm that you can flash to your phone that's been edited for cm7 not everyone uses it but I did and it works perfectly.
2. There is a kernel included but alot of people have better audio quality with one of the otb kernels.
There isn't a modem. But it seems like most of the newer modems are fine so your current one with comrom is probably good.
3. To do back to stock youll have to use a full odin package. But you probably won't want to anyway.

Thank you for the answers. Now I am more comfortable. Thanks.
Not sure how important it is, but I would wipe cache and dalvik as well. I used ED04 modem for a while, and switched to EC09 modem after everyone seemed to recommend it for the MTD roms. TBH, I havent noticed much difference between the 2 radios, they both worked well for me. As far as flashing back to a TW rom, check the sticky in the dev section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124391
I am already running the EC09 modem. Have been for about a week or so. I watched as others have had good luck with it so I made the jump. I probably will stick with the EC09 as it seems to work fine with AOSP MIUI Rom that I want to try. I tried the EC09 on my wife's fascinate and it ran like crap.....kind of funny how two different build dates run to differently.

Flashing new radio in conjunction with new kernel

So I just took the plunge and got off stock sense and moved to CM7. Couldn't be happier. I've heard to run pershoot's kernel as an upgrade, but to do that, you need radio 1.008 or whatever it is. I'm on 1.07.blah.blah
I've never flashed a radio before. I'm a little nervous. I guess firstly...I'd like to know if there are any advantages in both flashing a new kernel (pershoots) and/or a new radio? Can someone explain both...or if I really even need to upgrade my kernel from CM7's stock kernel?
I havn't had an radio issues yet...and I'm assuming a new radio would yield better signal strength, etc...but again, never done it. Any advantages to flashing pershoots? Thanks in advance
The radio may or may not give you better reception, few people got it, I upgrade and was still rocking my -99 dbm as usual and didn't notice any changes in battery life so YMMV.
btw~some people get stuck on the htc screen after flashing new radio, you can fix it by wiping cache and dalvik than flashing a kernel.
On the kernel, I just started using it as of lastnight and can say it's honestly the best kernel out right now, running scary or tiamat I would lose 1 or 2 % every 15 minutes with wifi on, with pershoot I am lucky if I lose 1% in about an hour while surfing the web. It's one amazing kernel.
As for the radio, i recommend just doing it... Everone has different experiences. As long as you check the md5 you will have no issue. Just remember to wipe everything. Also, with pershoot. Just do it its one nice kernel once everything is setup properly

no need to wipe everything with radio...
You might even have to format your sd card to fat32. Which will wipe your sd card. So back it up to your pc!
I was scared at bricking my phone at first as well, but if you get the md5sums and they match, you're ready to go.
Its as easy as placing the zip on your sd, booting to bootloader and letting it do its thing.
Simple.

If your going to flash a new Radio. Just follow the instruction in the OP of this THREAD . Also the OP has the new Radios. Just make sure you read and follow the instructons.
Personally I didn't notice any difference with the 1.08 radio. But you probably should update just to have the new new Like Thronnos said, CHECK THE MD5 SUM FIRST. As long as you do that and ensure that you didn't get a corrupted file you should be fine.
As far as kernels I'm still on the stock CM7 kernel. Works great for me with max set to 1.5ghz. People do say good things about Sparky's kernels but I couldn't ever bring myself to try one. Something about a dev who misspells Dalvik...
^ Shift Faced
I was able to flash the radio succesfully, thanks everyone. Just gotta decide now on the kernel... I had the infamous HTC screen freeze, but after wiping dalvik and cache, it booted up fine. Phew

I am running pershoot but if I had to say, go with either pershoot or scary.
What does wiping cache do to my system? Does it clear phone records or sms history? (Sorry for my good spelling, but I'm still new to the whole dev/phone hacking thing.)
And how do I check md5sum?

[Q] Continuum issues

Rooted my wife's continuum. No problem. Go to install new ROM, major issues. Every one I try causes errors when I try to activate wireless to re-install her apps. Usually locks the system and forces a battery pull. Tried EC-07 clean, the Nuckin ROM, stock again, no luck. Any ideas?
I am fairly knowledgeable with electronics. I have rooted my Incredible, my Samsung Galaxy Tab and jailbroke an iPhone 3gs. Why is this Continuum so different?
What radio do you have?
And what kernel?
You can check it in settings
Sent from my SCH-I400 using xda premium
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Baseband is the radio?
Baseband is s:i400.0.6v.ec06
Firmware is 2.2.2
Build is EC07
I'm guessing the radio and build should be the same, correct? If I have a EC07 build then I need the EC07 radio.
Normally, yes. But in our case, you have the correct radio annd kernel? Assuming that you wiped and reset, my dirst guess would be a bad flash. If you made a nandroid, i would revert and try avain eith freah downloads of the files (to be sure).

The deodexed rom that ciscogee posted is the one im on. Its debloated as well. But the clean you have is good. I havent tried them, but nukin and joshkoss's roms are said to be pretty good as well. When i said bad flash, i wasnt insinuating that the rom was bad, but that something got screwed up in the flash process.
That being said, nuckins is the most bare bones of the lot, if that is what you think will work for her.

re-doing CWM. Does it always take a long time to format the SD card when you wipe data? Doing wipe data/factory reset.. Was going to wipe Dalvik after then do a fresh install of the ROM. Thinking either Nuckin or the deodexed one.
Is anyone in the IRC channel #samsung-continuum or is there a developers one?
What version of cwm? 3 Isn't stable for us. 2.5 is

Still having some issues. Now I keep getting a no memory message when I try to install apps. Can't get ROM manager on or Astro or anything else. Any tips? Thinking the full memory might be part of my problem.
And why does the phone lock up when trying to connect to my home network? It locks up and resets. All the contacts disappear and it completely resets.

How to replace custom kernel?

Hello, using Purity ROM + Semaphore kernel and I want to try another kernel. Maybe matr1x. What are steps? I need to flash stock kernel, than custom or I can flash custom kernel without stock?
Thank you
You don't have to flash stock first.

Use caution. There are cases where flashing one kernel over another has proven to cause stability issues. Whilst for the majority of cases it's not necessary to flash stock kernel first, be prepared to do so. In other words, have a stock kernel downloaded as a back up in case you do have issues with the phone after the kernel exchange.

Good for you. Still doesn't mean the best advice we can give someone here is to "don't worry about it, just do it, it'll be fine". You don't know what ROM / Kernel people are coming from / going to and you certainly don't know how future ROMs / Kernels will behave. Again, there ARE examples on this forum where some kernels don't like being flashed over other non-stock kernels, problems have arisen and the only option was to flash a stock kernel first.
The best advice we can give someone on this forum is to be prepared for something to not go 100%. Like you I've never had a bad flash be-it ROM, radio or kernel but I still make sure I have a nandroid of the previous working state, stock ROM, radio and Kernel downloaded and know how to flash them before I do anything. That way, should it go wrong I'm covered.
I can not stress enough how wrong it is to just say "yeah, nothing will go wrong". It DOES go wrong and it goes wrong every day. For someone.

Umm, a recovery backup is something everyone should have. A backup of everything, including EFS for the clumsy ones that lose their IMEI's.
If you have a full backup of your system, it is okay to say "don't worry everything will be alright". If something goes wrong, you just do a system restore.
But that's just me, i can't be bothered with flashing stock kernels and roms all the time.
