My thoughts on the O2 Streak 2.2 update - Streak 5 General

Updated my O2 streak on wednesday night and I have spent some time trying to customise it to my liking and also getting used to Froyo. I must say it looks like a compleletly new phone. After using it for a day, I have found some bugs so I wanted to share with you all and see if other streakers out there also experience the same problem since the update.
Since updating to Froyo, I have mainly noticed the UI revamp and I do quite like it. But I haven't noticed any of the speed difference compared to 2.1, at least not very notisable to my eyes. (Infact I felt some what slower).
I am only using two of the stage UI from dell (Recently used Apps and galary), I feel they are a nice addition but not very useful for me. I also think that the Stage UI is resource hungry and it has slowed the phone down somewhat. Sometimes when I switch my phone on from standby or rotate the screen it takes about 1s for the Stage UI to load.
Another Bug i have noticed is that it seems to force close the browser every time I close the browser down by using option -> Exit.
I would also have liked the to fit my wigets or apps on each of the screens, I think the wiget size takes up too much space and also the app grid is just far too spaced out.
What I do love tho is the fact that home screen now not just in landscape but in portrait view. Battery appears to last longer then on 2.1 too.
Thats my thoughts right now. What are yours

I've got used to using ADW and after a couple of minutes using Stage I went back to it. So far there have been no major problems, the internet radio app crashes after a few seconds on the 'local' radio screen but works fine elsewhere. That's a problem with the app though, not O2 2.2. I might have been lucky but so far the upgrades from 1.6 - 2.1 - 2.2 have been pretty painless and worth it for me.

ViBrant Lag/Slowness

So to make my Question short
id like to know to know how well the phone performs after having used for at least 24 hours. I hear People complain about it lagging and being slow when switching homescreens specially if you add TouchWiz3 Widgets????
Im thinking of ordering one but want to hear from you guys. I Really dont support Samsung too much because well, THEY dont support their customers either. They say one thing with updates and promises but at the end they never fullfill their words. Any ideas???
If theres samsung widgets on TW then yes it lags.. I use tw without samsungs widgets and dont get any slowness going on.
I personaly havent seen any slowness yet. But read others do. Maybe im lucky..

yea just use adw launcher or launcher pro. Fast as can be with either of those. But im digging the TW for now without the widgets...
Awesome. Thanks for the replies. i guess ill be picking one up later around 6pm at T-Mobile Corp. Store.
Only Thing i hate is after playing with nexus one, mytouch slide, HD2, i will be missing the Led Flash which i still wonder why they would not add such feauture.
Kinda makes me think its because they want to launch a new phone not too far away and add Flash so people want to upgrade their current phones to that:/
I am using Samsung Widgets in 3 of 5 my screens with no Lag; I find it curious anyone is having lag unless you have like 20 homescreens packed with widgets. The hummingbird processor in this beast has currently edged out all of the top of the line android phones for CPU speed and it also has the fastest GPU (PowerVR SGX540) as well, offering performance of almost 2x compared to the Evo and Nexus. Lag should not be a happening thing
I have had mine since Friday, used it with TW and samsung widgets without issue, but I like the customization from adw so I have been using that for the last couple days. So far I have no complaints about speed, just hoping the gps and compass issues get fixed soon.
I have 3 widgets, one of them being Buddies now and get very little lag. Only the pause when coming back to the home screen (not always happening)
New owner I have one widget no lag at all.

I wish I could say the same. I have one widget, feeds and updates, and when it tries to refresh, it lags like hell. If I add the buddies now widget on another screen, just those 2 tw widgets are enough to make this feel like my original mytouch. Very disappointed in the lag.

Could you describe the lag in more detail? How many screens do you have? What wallpaper are you using? Are those the only 2 widgets you are using? Is the lag a skipping or is the phone not responsive at all? Is it better after a reboot?

I always love ADW because of the options and ESPECIALLY the "Drop to Uninstall" option.
but ADW would be just another program running, using more RAM. less use the better.
Yeah from what I can tell the TWLauncher is pretty light on the battery.
i just got rid of the 7 screens and am just using 1. i am gonna see if this helps with the overall performance of the phone. (from the homescreen> menu (haptic button)>edit> then delete the homescreens to your heart's content . You can always put them back by using the same method

I currently have five screens, one has Weather Widget and battery widget, another has the feeds and updates widget, then 2 widgets for stocks (that only update when i tell them to) and youtube and google search widgets. No live wallpaper either. When adding more TW widgets, swiping screens is slower than my old mytouch.

I was running fine for a couple of days and then I started noticing the lag. Selecting the Settings menu would take a couple of seconds. Camera would take a while. I have also had 3 or 4 freezes and had to reboot my phone. Hardly ever happened on the G1 in two years. Would get a black screen for 3-4 seconds in between operations. No spinner. Initially kept thinking the phone was going to sleep.
I have 5 screens with the buddies widget, 2 picture frames, the double daily time widget and Google Search. Shouldn't be causing this hardware to so much as break sweat. I tried removing all widgets. But it didn't help.
What did help was rooting the phone and running the script to move the apps to NAND. But of course there's a limitation on the number of apps. So far, after doing this, it's much better. I'll see if this holds.
The lags have ruined an otherwise outstanding experience on this phone. I'm very disappointed with this performance on this hardware.
What's interesting here is that it's working well for some of you. Which makes it inexplicable why moving the apps to NAND should make such a difference. If this were a problem with the cache, it should have been a problem on every phone. Don't understand this.
The good news is that almost all of the problems I have with the phone should be software fixable.
When it works well, it truly is an amazing device.
I'm very interested in doing the lag fix but I'm intimidated by the process. Is it worth trying to learn ADB? Or should I wait until September for the 2.2 release?

[Q] Any visible improvements on CM6 as compared to CM5.0.8?

Hi,
I have recently rooted my Magic 32A and installed CM5.0.8, which I'm happy with after stock Android 1.5 but I was wondering...
Is CM6 RC3 going to improve the performance of some of the apps because of the Java acceleration? Is it stable enough to try?
Anybody can suggest a better keyboard that I could use...default Android one is not that great.
Thanks!
Smart Keyboard is freaking awesome, but it's not free. It's $2.53 in the market.
As for CM6. I've tried all three RC's plus a random few nightlies, and it's always been slower than 5.0.8. Seems to lag anytime I'm switching betweens programs, flicking through the home screens, etc. Doesn't seem to be too bad while actually running applications, just a pain in the butt to get them going.
With that being said, don't take my word for it. The easiest way to find out is to make a Nandroid backup, flash CM6, and if you don't like it, just restore your Nandroid backup.
Thanks DonJuan692006! I really value the opinion of people who have tried it before me.
I was thinking CM6 should be faster...but maybe it's not because it's still RC.
As for the keyboard I would buy the one you suggested (actually never bought anything on Android yet so I'm curious of the process), but my question is...is that better than Swype? What are the advantages of Smart Keyboard? I think I found some other ones to buy too...
Smart keyboard for me is just a millions times more responsive than the Android keyboard. It also compensates for people who's fingers are bigger than the keys better. I know there are other keyboards available but I bought it based off the reviews.
Swype was really accurate when I was using it, but I found that right after I would clean the screen it was really too hard to drag my finger across the screen and even got to the point that my thumb would start to hurt. I quit using it all together once that started happening. But its all a matter of opinion. The good thing is that everything you buy in the market can be refunded within 24 hours, so just grab it first thing in the morning and use it through the day. If you don't like it, get a refund. I've done it for several apps in the past.
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
i think the problem lies within the launcher. No matter what kind of launcher you use, it still not fast like the stock launcher from 1.6 donut. Thats the real problem. Why do we have to look the same to Nexus One? Can anyone here create a simpliest rom with almost no addition-ware (i.e. launcher and gallery 3d), see if it improve performance and battery? lets make a petition shall we
I have installed CM6 it is runnung a bit faster, but as it was said those few bugs with luncher are not really problems for me,it is great. But ofc there is a battery comsuption problem it is leeching your battery

I was hoping there was a demo or a lite version to experience it a little bit... this way I am not sure if I am sold on it - gotta pay $3 to experience - to late for refund then.
we'll see what happens in reviews - so far it looks pretty kewl

-show 'leap' view

can anyone say if these features are available in this?

Do you know where I can suggest the dev some features ?
Most important for me is : set the default screen to the first one not the centre, put the "1-icon dock" on the right or left and not only in the centre, be able to choose the icons background.
Fantastic job for the rest. Super fast...
Edit : can someone confirm me that ADWNotifier works with this ?

The refund period recently changed to 15 minutes, contrary to the 24h earlier. What kind of person proposed this change, I don't know. This short timespan barely left me with any time to test ADW EX, so I ended up asking a refund because I don't feel like buying a product I'm not sure I like.
In short: it's not the devs fault.
Liking it...
.. but doesnt feel faster to me compared to launcherpro
Yeah sure you can set the homescreen transitions to fly by alot quicker than you can in LP, but overall LP just feels smoother to me.
Apart from that, my currentwidget now hovers between 9-16ma in standby, where my phone was consistant between 6-9ma with LP.

Certainly too short to really try a launcher that looks and acts seemingly like another one. Not enough time to find out any specific nuances that we may like.
In fairness though, I can't see any reason why anyone would change launchers to use this. They all look the same to me, with a few "little" features that hardly make the transition worthwhile.
Not knocking the app itself. Just don't get reinventing the wheel, and then releasing newer versions of it.

Haha nicely worded.
been using LP for about 3 weeks now, love it, however i just got ADW, been using it for like 30 minutes, and extremely loving it.
The one important thing i noticed:
w/ 7 screens in LP fully packed w/ widgets, folder, apps...when you 'pinch' the screen to view the preview screens it stutters. Like it lags the first time you 'pinch' it, after that initial swipe, it is fine. This got really annoying, especially when coming out of sleep mode.
w/ 7 screens in ADW EX fully packed w/ widgets, folder, apps...when you 'pinch' it is still smooth as silk, coming out of sleep mode as well.
I'm still comparing the two for now, i'll keep you all updated
comparing both w/ DS's SupperRam 1.5

Like the NS but don't like Gingerbread so far

I just switched from a MT4G with Froyo 2.2.1 Sense UI to an NS with gingerbread 2.3.1. I must say that the phone is great as the MT4G is, but the Android gingerbread experience is bad. I think that this version of gingerbread should never have seen an end-user device like the NS that is sold by BestBuy. As a development platform or for geeks 2.3.1 is ok. But I think there are so many bugs and unpolished things in Gingerbread that I wish sometimes I would be back to Froyo with Sense UI. I had a N1 before and I know what Stock android means. Gingerbread feels at the moment like a bad beta: there are some lags on the homescreen with the stock launcher introduced with 2.3.1. The browser and flash movies is not usable at all, it is so choppy that it is an embarrassment to release something like that to end-users. We have a FFC but no support from Google for that yet and an NFC that is not supported yet either. I hope that we don't have to wait 6 months until we see a stable and snappy running version of Gingerbread. I can imagine that a lot of NS go back because the people that switch from iphones, BB or Sense UI Android phones expected something else.
uhhhhhh what? I've had zero bugs. ZERO. Way better than SENSE(YUCK) and FroYo. Reflash the software. Don't just complain and not be pro-active to fixing it. Gingerbread is VERY stable and VERY runnable. Start being pro-active and fix it. Just reflash gingerbread or warranty it out for a new one. It DEFINITELY works fine for 99% of the people out there.

Gingerbread stock is chock full of glitches. Others have reported the same, and I've experienced it myself. The home screen does lag every so often, including freeze (requiring a reboot); there are issues sometimes with trying to move icons (they don't get set correctly, or mysteriously appear in folders); there are problems with the stock keyboard (discussed a ton of times in other threads); gallery pictures sometimes disappear; often things requiring tapping twice to launch (despite the highlight clearly showing you've pressed it the first time); and probably one of the biggest offenders: custom ringtones constantly change randomly.
There's a slew of other problems often mentioned. I wouldn't go so far as desiring Froyo, but there's no question GB could use a helping hand of bug fixes in its next update.
Not one problem here. =D

No issues as far as the screen goes on my end. The browser is a known issue and a fix will be coming shortly, hopefully.
The OP might want to try a different launcher like Launcher Pro or ADW. The launcher really sets the look and feel of the device, and most third party launchers will let you get features HTC Sense or even an iPhone look and feel.
I personally like the Gingerbread experience with Launcher Pro, but to say it's perfect and bug free is a joke. There are plenty of bugs, most are minor, but some are downright major.
Major ones include the random reboots, in-call reboots, and bluetooth stereo streaming not working. Many report these right here.
Gingerbread definitely has a bit of a beta feel for me, or maybe more like a release candidate feel...

Thank you! I thought I am the only person who has these issues. I guess the people that have no problems are the ones that are rooted or running mods. But that was not what I am talking about. I was talking about stock gingerbread 2.3.1. I think I shouldn't be forced to root my phone to have it run properly.

That would have been on my minor list...but only because it hasn't happened to me in quite a while.
Rebooting during a phone call is a major flaw, as well. Don't know how I forgot to mention that one too.
You know, I don't know how many people read my other posts in other threads, but I'm really beginning to reevaluate my position regarding Android overall. I am beginning to understand the price of customization, the price of having two different people develop software and hardware. Unfortunately, I don't agree with Apple's "the average user is an idiot" philosophy either... so I don't know. A part of me feels Google isn't taking the reigns of this as they should or could, and it shows. The Android experience can feel second rate.
Edit: Sorry to hi-jack the thread. Conclusion is, yes, GB is chock full of glitches.
Sure, I've had a couple reboots here and there, and the browser is very laggy on big pages, but overall I'm loving it. I'm running stock Gingerbread, not rooted, with Launcher Pro and this thing is fast. Real fast.
At first I didn't love this phone. Then I went back to my Nexus One for a day and couldn't deal. The screen on the Nexus S is awesome. It's fast, with tons of room for apps. I'm also running Better Keyboard. The stock keyboard was pretty good too, but BK seems to be running just fine in both portrait and landscape.
Sometimes after reboot, Launcher Pro crashes immediately. I restart it then it lasts forever. Not sure if it's an LP bug or a Gingerbread bug. But I'm sure some bug fixes will come over time.
I love my Nexus One to death. I will never sell that phone. But the Nexus S is my new baby.

When you say Gingerbread is "way better than Froyo"....what exactly is better ? just curious
Im as big an Android fanboy as there is, but to say GB doesn't have a decent amount of bugs is ignorant. My 2 biggest gripes are the stock launcher problems and the laggy browser. Launcher Pro is a lifesaver. I don't know how 3rd party launchers can be BETTER than Google's own, but they are.
I also had the mt4g and realised it seemed quicker and had better quadrant scores because it has.over 700mb of ram and a second gen snapdragon. That being said, the NS is a dev phone so b patient and wait for more tweaks and custom roms to come out.

Finally, got my Nexus S from UK
And I agree with the OP ... Gingerbread feels not finished ... not polished ... with a little bit lag from here and there.
Web browser is lag lag and lag (Flash updated, set to on demand). It is not comparable to my old HTC Desire (even though it is also a bit lag).
To be honest, HTC done much better on this! Sense is smooth, it's web browser is much faster.
And I am talking HTC Desire .... old hardware, old snapdragon gen 1 !!
Hopefully this will be addressed soon.
Decided to finally come out of lurking and throw in my $0.02:
Been switching back and forth between my Nexus one and Nexus S (Have LauncherPro on both) for the past few weeks. I haven't had any of the aforementioned bugs or problems with the Nexus S on 2.3.1 and IMHO it definitely feels more polished than 2.2.1. If anything I think there's considerable improvement from 2.2 to 2.3 in terms of feel like a "more complete and polished OS" as compared to 2.1 and previous.
But also keep in mind that those of us with Nexus S's are those who want to be at the bleeding edge of everything. For those of you less familiar with Google doctrine on their "products" like Chrome, Gmail (back in the day) need to realize that Google likes to push stuff out for early adopters to catch all the bugs and provide them feedback on your experience with it. Then over time they'll polish it all up and provide an better experience.

Lag after 2.3 OTA

So i got the OTA update (i actually wiped my phone to start clean).. and the phone runs snappy, except for the home screen... scrolling through them is pretty laggy..
best described its like having 2.2 with a live background. just not smooth at all.
my atrix with 2.2 ran ALOT smoother on the homescreen (and yes this bothers me)... apps are fast etc, but its just choppy.
has anyone noticed this? i installed launcher pro to use for now and its smooth as butter..
me too felt the same .. had to install launcher pro in order for a smoother experience. Overall, i felt the screen seemed to be less responsive .. except for Gingerbread goodies .. i completely disliked this update. Battery issues, homescreen scrolling slow, touchscreen less responsive ..
it definitely is slower
and i miss the little buttons at the bottom for jumping to a screen
@viper: it is only changed. You can "swap Home" swiping from bottom (over fixed icons area) upwards the middle of the screen. In this way you can choose quickly what "home" to reach.
first post for me actually used to search thing found this thread, but besides alot of the awesome new features the lag on the home screen has really be bothering me
Even alot of my apps that were fine in froyo are now lagging, i haven't rooted, unlocked the bootloader or anything, i was personally waiting for this update to come out before i started to mess with any of that stuff, but for me everything besides opera mobile is noticably laggy. But for some reason opera is alot smoother
Slower?
My stock gingerbread runs so much better than Froyo. Infact even the Live Wallpapers have no effect on home screen scrolling. For the first time since I bought the phone I am not running any launcher as the new Blur runs just fine.
I did a factory reset soon after upgrading. May be you guys should try that.
opposite for me gingerbread much snappier.
launcher pro noticeably faster than ADW EX (which was what I used to use) so made the jump

tried that
seems to have had the opposite effect lol
noticeably slower now
for giggles i ran smartbench again and i'm now only getting around 2500 for productivity
1000 worse than before
My phone (completely stock) also lags since the upgrade. Home screen lags and some apps lag. Battery life is worse. The task bar looks horrible and many of the symbols hard to recognize. Froyo, with the exception of the unlock lag, was faster and smoother on my phone. I regret upgrading now but, unfortunately, I did not make a contingency plan for downgrading.

Yeah i may try a factory reset... just not sure how much it will help me though because i reset my device before i upgraded.
On another note, i actually rather like launcher pro... i might just keep it.
