Warranty Inquiry - Galaxy S I9000 General

I was reading around that if you are lets say a Rogers customer and you buy a I9000M from someones who's with Bell, you don't get warranty from bell. Is that true? Will you get warranty from Samsung at least? Actually, the guy I bought it from worked at a cellphone store who is a representative for Bell (I was at the store when he was working) and he said he won it from his company and that I get warranty coverage. The phone is brand new when I bought it. Now reading how everyone is having issues with updating to 2.2 and internal SD cards being fried, I am reluctant to do so. However, if presented a situation where my phone does die, can I get warranty from somewhere? As I am still under a year of usage obviously.

Warranty Exchange?

I need to go about returning my 8125 to warranty exchange. Problem is, I did not purchase the phone, rather bought it brand new off of someone else. (who bought it from cingular) The other person is unwilling to do the exchange. Excluding the issue of the reasons for the exchange, and any physical damage (there is only scratches) could I do a warranty exchange without the involvement of the seller? I plan to say the phone keeps freezing. Worked with my razr.
Also, I flashed the phone to a new rom, will this void the warranty? Do i have to flash back to summiter's stock rom? Thanks a lot.
1) Normally Cingular's gonna want some sort of proof of purchase. Since the phone's not been out more than a year though you might be lucky on that point.
2) It had better have the STOCK ROM (not summiter's not Mr. Clean not anything custom, STOCK) before you send it in. Otherwise they're gonna know you messed with it.
where can i get the stock rom
Well according to this link http://www.htcwizardweb.net/node/161 one of the ROM's available from Summiter is infact the original ROM. Summiter must have backed it up before starting to play with it, I guess.
If the rom is still a cingular rom will not void warranty.
If not -
This is the stock rom ftp://[email protected]/Wizard/Roms/Cingular/Cingular_RUU_1.8.11.1.WWE.ship.exe
If the device is supercid unlocked then do a simple downgrade - if not you will have to go down this path. http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=47848
This sucks
I have the same problem got it brand new on ebay everything was wrapped in original box including the sim card. the touch screen is having issues the bottom part wont' do anything. tried to call cingular the would not help .. i explained that i am a cingular customer but i have the phone so i can use it on a data plan with t mobile and they would not help at all told me that if i didn't get the item from them or their authorized seller they will not help. I have been on the phone wiht HTC america a total of 4 hours back and forth and they won't help. look sell it on ebay...... and call it a day. I will never purchase another cingular branded phone. thinking of switching to tmobile but their service sucks. sprint out of the question i have too many unlocked phones big investment and i refuse to be locked to one phone using sprint or veriozon. the entire deal sucks.... they should sell phones like in europe walk in the store get a phone at the phone's price not at some larger price just to line the fat greasy pockets of cingular ceo's they tricked me inot migrating my good at&t plan they told me that i had 15 days to decide and i can cancel but when i asked for my at&t plan they tell me some story about they don't have th plans anymore. I still have th at&t sim so what give the whole think sucks. lets move to europe
Did you tell them you didn't buy it from them? I've done several exchanges and they have never asked me that. They just ask for the IMEI number (which identifies it as a Cingular phone and the model) and then process the exchange. Whatever you do, do NOT volunteer the fact that you got it elsewhere and you should be OK, but yes return it with the stock ROM
stock rom
you mean i can go to the store without a reciep and get a replacement

Now this is a logical fallacy. Have you even bothered to price the cost of a Wizard in the UK? If they were priced the way you say, you'd be paying a whole lot more for them. Retail price on an unlocked Wizard is between $600 and $700 USD. Retail price on a locked unit (ie, just walk into a store in the US and buy it straight out) is $450. With a contract from either T-Mobile or Cingular you can get them from $0-$100.
When you buy used on eBay you always take a risk. Without a proof of purchase, the store/carrier is really under no obligation to warranty the phone for you. Sure, many times they will but it is silly to assume that they have to do it. If you wanted that level of service you would have bought from the store in the first place. Nothing says you can't walk into a retailer, buy a phone and not get a contract.
If you've got a defective phone you really should be taking it up with the guy who sold it to you on eBay as fully working.
hello wait a minute
I got it on ebay and the guy who sold it said it was brand new now i can't get in contact with him. the contact info that ebay has is a po box. they guy won't return my calls. He sent me one email asking me for the imie number after i gave him that number all of a sudden the phone would not boot into windows. The inial problem was the touch screen now the entire thing is toast. Should I call my credit card company and dispute the charge.
Just giving someone an IMEI number should not cause a boot failure by itself, however the simply fact that he asked for it is somewhat suspect as there is no legit reason for a seller to need to ask a buyer for the IMEI number of a phone after it has been sold.
I'm not saying this is your case, but the first thing that pops to mind is insurance fraud. A popular eBay scam right now is to sign up for phone service and get an expensive phone for free. The person in question will also get phone insurance. Then they put the phone up for sale and collect the cash, while at the same time reporting it to the carrier as lost or stolen. The phone then gets replaced and they have both cash in hand as well as a new phone.
In much of the world (ie all over Europe) this doesn't work well as IMEI blocking has been implemented by the carriers there. If a phone is reported lost or stolen the IMEI is added to a database and none of the cooperating networks will allow it to register. In the US this hasn't happened yet on the GSM networks. With the CDMA networks they tie to the ESN on the phone and will block a lost or stolen phone (as well as one with an outstanding balance).
Regardless, had the IMEI been blocked by the carrier, you would not be able to make calls but the Wizard should still boot up and function as a PDA. Of course, if the seller was trying to pull insurance fraud that would explain why he asked for the IMEI and is now ignoring you. It would be rather simple for the seller to do a warranty exchange with Cingular on your behalf, but if the phone was reported lost or stolen he wouldn't exactly want to be phoning up Cingular and asking them to service the phone.
Just some idle speculation.

I believe that you should contact EBay or Paypal and your credit card number to put the case on the dispute...let them know that the item not in working condition as they advertise. You may spent a lot of effort and time for it but at least..... this will make the seller to contact you and deal with you again.
Format has failed
I was able to flash the rom. The flashed completed but it still freezes at the start up screen it says the following:
IPL 2.25
SPL 2.25
GSM 02.25.11
OS 2.25.11.1
its stuck onthe Cingular logo screen. When I try to do a hard reset it give the error message
format has failed.....
Can this device be saved?
Sounds like it is having trouble initializing a section of the flash. My guess is that there's a bad flash chip on there. If I ever saw that on my Wizard I'd be on the phone asking for a warranty replacement.
How do i get the replacemente
How do I get the replacement. I got it off Ebay. Will HTC give me a replacement if so please send me a number where I can contact them.
update of my situation
Well still no reply from the seller so I called the credit card company and dispute the charge. i have copies of the guys ad... and copies of the rude emails he sent me. The credit card company told me just hold on to the defective phone and the emails and they will take care of it.. Apparantly the seller was working from a Post office box he was pay apal verified. I just hope no one else falls victim to this guy.

warranty question

all heros have 12 month warranty right? you dont need to apply for it? if anything goes wrong with your phone then you just need to contact htc ? am i right?
thanks
That very much depends on where you are physically located, and where you physically bought the device.
My phone came from T-Mobile UK, and comes with a 1 year warranty. If I have a problem with the device in that time, I should go back to the original vendor (i.e. T-Mobile UK) to seek remedy. In addition, even though I only have a 1 year warranty, my statutory rights are not affected - see this link
Bear in mind that this is going to be covered differently in other regions.
Regards,
Dave
i bought it from ebay. its a simfree version
so will it still be covered.?
thanks
I couldn't tell you definitively.
Assuming you are in the UK, if you bought it from a UK company on Ebay and is was sold "new", then they are responsible. The same may well apply across the EU, but I'm uncertain of this.
If it was bought as second hand from an individual, the situation is not so clear, but it is probable that the original retailer should still be required to honour the warranty.
Regards,
Dave
I faced that issue some time ago and i contacted htc for a problem.
well from what they told me, if the phone wasn't bought at an official htc vendor, then you have no business with htc. Only thing you can do is you can send your phone to htc to get repaired or checked but you'll have to pay for it ( even if you have a guarantee from a shop)
You should contact the store where you bought the phone. And the catch at these local stores is that you should have your guarantee and receipt on your name to be able to claim it. so buying on ebay ...... i cant say for sure

Bricked AT&T G1 returnable to T-mo?

I am an AT&T customer that uses-- used a rooted G1 from eBay. I called HTC, and they told me the manufacturer warranties on the G1 ended last month.
How likely is it that I could convince someone at the local T-mobile store to help me with a replacement?
I'm assuming not at all likely, but I've read stranger things here on xda. I'm imagining they have the phone's IMEI tied to some grand customer database to show that I'm just some bum with a G1. I do have a friend with T-mobile (and a G1), but if it is tied to the IMEI, they wouldn't just take my phone from her if I paid her?
I'm really not looking forward to buying a whole new phone, but I have accepted that this is probably my only option, so please don't flame too thoroughly.
(I did several searches, but almost none were relevant to AT&T/eBay return combo. Unless I just suck at searching.)
You are right, you have 0 chance of T-Mobile swapping or doing anything at all.
how did it break?
TMobile won't support you unless you bought the phone from them.
I called HTC last week to check on my G1 warranty since TMobile wouldn't support me. I was told (by HTC) that warranty is 15 months. Mine expires next month. Did you give them your S/N to check your warranty?
Though, if it was rooted then your warranty is void. Unless you want to pay for them to fix it for you, don't send it in. I don't know how they know if you rooted or modified anything, but if they find out you will be charged a minimum (triage) fee even if you decide you don't want to pay for actual repairs.
I sent them one that was previously rooted and obviously had been torn apart- no moisture sticker even. Told them I got it that way on Craigslist. Didnt cost me a dime besides shipping (Priority Mail $5) and time. HTC direct rules IMO.
The Triage fee is for them to diagnose it, and is only charged if you are out of warranty, or if it is your fault. The fee also includes return shipping.
I spoke to a rep, and when I gave her the S/N she said it expired on 12.25.9. I'm not sure where she was getting the date considering I bought the phone in May, but it definitely wasn't 15 months. I can't imagine the phone was already 6 months old when I bought it unless it was just sitting in a warehouse somewhere.
I had another idea though. Possibly stupid, but possibly genius, too?
What if I went to T-mo, and bought a phone without a plan. Then switched the motherboards and got a replacement for the broken one. Then I could returned the new one? Is this mad?
Not only is it mad, it would be really obvious what you did since all those void stickers would be removed in the process, as well when found out there would be hell to pay on your end for trying to fraudulantly switch devices like that. As well, the mother board has the serial # on it both physically and electronically, and this can't be changed.
Ah. I guess the good old G1 is going into a drawer somewhere until one day (hopefully) it can be un-bricked.
Since I have to buy a new phone anyway now, would anyone care to throw in their two cents for the Cliq or the X1a as a replacement Android phone under 300 without contract?
You could also get a used G1 off eBay in great condition for about $200. I got mine in perfect like new condition for $200 back in Septemeber, when I was looking they were going typically for about $225-$250 in that condition, but I waited for the best deal(took about a week of watching to get the deal I did). I would assume with the Nexus One coming out and being post X-Mas season, prices are down a bit, but will likely go back up a little come February when tax season starts.
Keep an eye out for a cracked g1 or one with other problems, then re-use the board. I see them on CL for $40-60 regularly (although none right now).
I would talk to HTC and tell them where you bought it and when, it helps if you have the transaction recorded! You should be able to convince them to cover it if you have enough proof. Nothing wrong with using the truth to your advantage.
Depending on where you live, you can find a good number of people selling their G1 on craigslist. I got bored and just did a search now.
$70 w/o battery or cover (sounds sketchy).. $100 in good condition.. $200 unlocked. Seems like the average is $150 around here.
I got mine for 100 brand new shipped from tmobile! The person didn't want it as they got a new phone so you may get lucky and get a brand new one for a real cheap price
I bought a cracked G1 on ebay for ~90USD. I found 2 within 100mi on craigslist, but both were scooped up by someone else within the first hour of being on the list.
I followed the step-by-step guide here to swap the phones' guts and now I have a locked (but not bricked) phone, and a dud.
Maybe I can still fetch a few bucks for the bricked, cracked (screen) phone.
With the Nexus out now I bet quite a few early adopters like me are switching. I got a msg from my buddy today saying once his Nexus arrives the G1 is for sale. He wants $100 for it, pretty average price around here for a working, but not mint, G1

NEWS update from Bell for owners of i9000m

After waiting for a whole damn hour in line to get a phone serviced
They said they will not service any phone without an invoice
Also Samsung has officially extended the warranty from 15/30 days to 60 days
So any phone that dies within those 60 days it'll basically be replaced, but for that to happen you will need an invoice.
They said they are NOT honouring the eBay purchases, so anyone who purchased through eBay... good luck.
oh, also the phone must be LOCKED, if it's UnLocked they will also not service it.
Any phone after the 61 days will be serviced regardless of where it was purchased, but... for that you will need an invoice, $45 submission fee, and whatever it cost for the repair when you pick it up.
I sure hope I get a new handset - I'll note the IMEI/production date # when I get my replacement back in a few weeks.
i'm pretty sure you will, most Bell stores and resellers are in back order due the low stock of the phone
mainly because of all the repairs and exchanges needed

What issue is this? Are you referring to the issue people are having with the phone turning off on it's own. Or do you mean the phone completely dies and your not able to turn it back on at all?
it's for any type of service you want to do with the phone

? What did you do with your phone? Mine's just fine. I'm confused and did I did not read much on here since the last few days.
my phone is fine, i was just doing a favour to the guys in USA having trouble with getting the phone serviced by Bell "because you don't have an account with us, we have no way to charge you"
*crosses fingers* Hopefully mine won't wig out.
It's my phone. Luckily the original owner still has the invoice so we should be able to get it repaired unless Bell comes out with another excuse.
Guess I better put those how to re-lock instructions somewhere safe...
Yeah, kinda jumped the gun buying itslick off ebay, make sure you print out the ebay invoice for records.
You can still get it serviced after the 60 days period

I bought mine at Best Buy. They WON'T honour it AT ALL! So they send me to a Bell store. The Bell store sends me back to BB. BB sends me back to Bell... this happens 4 more times in each store, which ends up with me really pissed off cause I have a receipt for the phone that I bought out right from BB. BB totally refuses to exchange my phone, and says you have to go to the manufacturer now, so the tech at the bell store said since I didn't buy the phone from a "Bell store" they can't replace it and they can only send it out for repair. EVEN THOUGH its been way LESS than 30 days. (18 to be exact) So, I had no other choice but to send it out to be repaired. Its been 2 weeks, and still "out for repair". They tell me to check back next week. I can't believe I couldn't even get an exchange since my phone definitely qualifies under Samsung's DOA (30 days) policy, and the bell tech even admitted it too. Who cares where I bought it from! I have a Best Buy recepit, and OBVIOUSLY BB gets their stock from BELL!
So the 60 day period for exchange is ONLY if you bought it from a BELL store. >.<

Is this standard operating procedure across the board for Canadian carriers? If so it is a total night and day difference from us in the States where the point of sale is responsible for 30 days, Carrier for the next 11 months, and the manufacturer stays out of it.
The only manufacturer I have ever had honor a warranty directly was HTC and that was after hours of arm wringing over the phone.
Brutal! The damn thing is locked to Bell's network, Best Buy is an authorized seller of Bell phones and plans. I got mine from Best Buy on launch day for the 99 buck sale with $75 gift card. The next day I went to a Bell store to swap numbers with my other phone and got the phone insurance while I waited. They have to give me a new phone even if I smash it on the counter right in front of them. Covers wear and tear also.

HTC and Palm were very straight forward if you purchased the phone unlocked from factory, they will not hesitate to give you a RMA number to send the phone back for repairs
Bell has always been a biatch to deal with, in ANYTHING.
Samsung has their hands tied due their Exclusive Deal with Bell, so... until that exclusive deals expires, Samsung wont be able to help you directly.
by late October when Rogers releases the Galaxy S (AT&T model) things should have settled down by then, and it should be a better experience dealing with Samsungs own Customer Service rather than Bell's well known nightmare CS, same crap from Rogers CS, that's why i switched to Fido, they are only CS that are more human

But isn't Fido owned by Rogers? Odd that they run them independently with different policies like that.
SIM lock / unlock
originally this model i9000m was locked to Bell, no body else was supposed to use it outside of Bell
so if you send it your phone for service, other than Flash related problem, they will know your phone was unlocked
if the flashed is screwed up, they can't check it at all, and that will pass
but if the phone is bootable, and they can get into the OS, then they'll know if it was SIM unlocked or not
like if you are sending the phone for service because of a screen problem, or speaker problem, or some other thing that does not involved a dead phone
so either kill it good before you send it in, or wipe all traces of evidence

Just tried getting phone fixed under warranty .. WARNING

At the time I purchased my phone, most of the carrier stores were sold out of the HTC one. However I found someone local who was selling a brand new unit that they had won in a raffle.. so I purchased it from them.. The unit was brand new in a sealed box.
Fast forward to today, I have been had the purple camera issue for a long time now, and decided I would finally send the unit in for warranty repair.. I logged onto the HTC support chat a started speaking a rep.. I explained the issue I was having with the camera. After confirming that I was still having the issue after upgrading to version 4.3 he said he could proceed with a repair order for the phone.. Great I thought, this will be easy. He asked for my shipping address, he then stated that for canadian customers, they ask that we first go to our carrier stores to try and process a warrenty exchange. If the vendor could not do that then HTC could move forward with the repair order.
I explained to him that I had not purchased the phone from a vendor, but it was purchased brand new and sealed in a private sale.
At that point he stated that it would not be covered under warranty because it wasn't purchased by a validated vendor..
What the hell??
I argued the fact that the phone was brand new and the repair was for a well known flaw, but he refused to budge.. stating that purchasing from a third party vendor, the warranty would not switch over because the vendor was not an actual HTC vendor.
Frustrated I ased him if my phone has now been flagged to be out of warranty.. His response was "I would not be able to process this as a repair in warranty as you have provided that it has been purchased through third party vendor."
SO the moral of the story is to LIE…. If I had just lied and said the carrier would not exchange the phone I would have been fine..
Anyone have any suggestions on how to escalate this?

Call again and hope you don't get the same rep. If they pull up that you already claimed it was purchased privately, say it was a misunderstanding and blame it on something else (line was breaking up and rep heard parts of what you were saying and misunderstood). Go crazy. Best imagination wins HTC repairing their phone.
why don't you say : mr. this is an htc product. is not important my vendor, is htc and i have warranty.
