Evidence of a CDMA version? - Nexus S General

This is the "Phone Info" screen on the Nexus S:
I noticed this while setting my NS to WCDMA only. This is a change from the Nexus One, which never had any EVDO or CDMA options in the Phone Info screen.

I wouldn't read too much into it.....my Nexus One has CDMA Auto(PRL), CDMA Only, EvDo only and GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL) all listed.

I am not saying there won't be - just that this isn't a "new" entry into the phone info menu as implied by the OP.

My Evo (cdma only) also had those same options.

opps
WCDMA is gsm. Its not the same as cdma on Verizon and Sprint.
edit: nevermind I had not seen the photo.

You are probably right, I just checked a friends N1 and saw the same options. Oh well, guess I was just over excited!

Can you be a bit more specific as to what you don't understand?
PRL = Preferred Roaming List is a list stored in your phone
GSM = 2G
WCDMA = 3G
"CDMA only" and "EvD0 only" probably won't give you service, unless you have a non-GSM N1 ;-)

G1 was on the 1.5/1.6. EvDO and CDMA was added with the Droid and Android 2.0, with a backport to the HTC Hero. Even then, it's also phone based. The Nexus will eventually be on Verizon. It seems they thought it would be worth it to put the option on there now for when they release it in Q3/Q4.

Umm... that's because your device doesn't have a CDMA (EVDO) radio in it. Did you expect it to magically pick up VZW and Sprint signals with the nonexistant CDMA radio?

CDMA

I was reading that setting your phone to CDMA helps improve battery life. I was wondering what CDMA is and how do I set it to that?

From what I understand CMDA is a network type not something you can change if you changed that setting your phone would no longer communicate with your carriers towers.

It's killing radio. Like airplane mode. And wont work in CDMA networks as it lacks the hardware needed.

I thought CDMA was 3G. I have GSM and WCDMA. GSM is edge. Which uses less battery life, 3G use gives you less battery time. I may have it backwards. But I don't think so.

WCDMA aint the same as CDMA. WCDMA = UMTS = HSPA (HSDPA+HSUPA) = 3G (ok, not equal, but let's keep it simple). GSM = GPRS = EDGE = 2G. CDMA = Other kind of 2G, EVDO = Other kind of 3G.
That should summarize it all.

In short, all AT&T phones are GSM because the cell tower configuration AT&T uses. Verizon phones, for example, are CDMA because they use a different tower configuration than AT&T, thus why Verizon phones can't work on AT&T. Have you noticed how the new Verizon iPhone had to be slightly readjusted to add extra antenna notches in the corner's that the AT&T iPhone did not have? This is so the Verizon iPhone can be compatible on Verizon's CDMA network.
Yeah ATT uses GSM, it is a newer technology than CDMA
mobile term madness
FYI: while setting your phone to GSM/2G will save battery, you will not be able to use data and voice simultaneously (without wifi anyway) just like Sprint and Verizon users. Maybe no big deal, but happens to be a feature I can't live without.

T-Mobile's LTE Apn settings?

I wasn't aware they had begun rolling out their LTE network, can you provide a link with details and/or the starting markets. Had a quick look and Google turned up nothing for me.
No link. I called customer service/611 about my data issues, then the rep forwarded me to the tech specialist. That person said they had to do something to my phone and that it had to be rebooted blah blah blah...After that I asked about the LTE rollout and he said he would check on his computer, once he checked he told me that New York, New York & Las Vegas were currently equipped with 4G LTE. I told him the N4 had a LTE chip and he said I might be able to get LTE now.
I work for T-Mobile and we don't have lte the rollout begins middle of this year. What tech might have been referring to was the switch from 1700 to 1900 for hspa+ for iPhone compatibility.

This is likely the case. If T-Mobile has LTE anywhere right now it is solely for testing purposes.
I was in Las Vegas about two weeks ago and tried a few APN settings on T-Mob to get LTE but all i could get was H+.
Tmo doesn't have LTE yet.

there isn't anything different for APN settings to get H+. You get H+ if you are in a H+ area.

I have heard that LTE APN for T-Mobile might be: fast.tmobile.com
I changed mine but unfortunately looks like no LTE in my area yet
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
When my note 2 updated from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 the APN went to that fast.tmobile.com
Official LTE rollout will be tomorrow in about 6-7 select cities.
I too talked with a rep today and he said oh lte is already out in orlando, then he corrected him self by saying hspa+ is out which i can get speeds of about 24 mb down..

LTE APN settings??
I live in Salt Lake City and most likely not in an LTE area. So is it better to use the LTE apn settings or the regular epc setting?
I have a T-mobile Galaxy Note 2 and I completed the 4.1.2 update and my Note is rooted but on the stock rom. I also have the H and H+ since I did the update and have not seen the 4G symbol since and before the 4.1.2 update I rarely had anything but the 4G Symbol.
I contacted T-mobile and was advised by a tech rep that its ideal to use the epc setting since LTE is not yet available in my area.
But he did confirm that fast.t-mobile.com is the correct apn setting for LTE
I just set my Google Nexus (the one before the Nexus 4) to fast.t-mobile.com
My mobile data works, but still shows H next to the mobile signal indicator.
If I try to change my Preferred Network Type to anything other than "WCDMA Preferred" it immediately switches back to "WCDMA Preferred"
I'm in the Philly, PA suburbs.

Why is my LTE device displaying as HSPA+?

Hey guys. I Have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (SGH-I317M) and for some reason it fluctuates between HSPA+ and 3G signals rather than LTE. The device is originally locked to Rogers but I unlocked it and am now using it with MTS. I am running on jelly bean 4. 1.2 and CleanRom 4.0.5. Anybody have any ideas as to why I'm not getting LTE?

Are you still getting fast data speeds? All LTE is 3.9 g and hspa is like 3.6 g lol..

Yes I'm getting fast speeds but I can't help but wonder why this is happening. I mentioned that I'm with MTS so I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for. I live in Canada so it's probably not familiar to you. They just started carrying S3's which are running on their LTE network and they show 4G at the top of them when activated rather than HSPA+.

It is either the towers or your phone isn't compatible with the bands of LTE (there are multiple bands like there is with UTMS).

I'm pretty sure it isn't the towers cause my friends iPhone 5 is running off LTE and he live about 5 minutes away from my house. I've also been at distances one minute away from his house and did not pick up LTE then either. I don't know much about bands or frequencies but my carrier just launched the Galaxy S3's and they run off LTE and I'm assuming the Note 2 has the same hardware. S3: 700 (Band 17), 1700/2100 (AWS) MHz , Note 2: 700(band 17) 850 AWS 1,900(band 2). I'm clueless as to what those numbers mean but i'm guessing the important thing is Band 17, right?
Try going near his house then. Or have you checked the network settings? You may have to flash something.

I have to no avail. I had a friend try to help me out over the phone with network settings and his phone appears to have a setting that mine does not. When he goes into settings > wireless and network more settings > mobile network there is an option for him to toggle between LTE, HSPA+ etc. My phone doesn't have that for some reason. All that's listed is Mobile data, data roaming, Access point names, and network operators. Nothing to toggle between networks, which is probably what I need to enable LTE. I have no idea why that setting would be absent from my device. My friend was using an S3 on the same operating system as me btw.
From what i can tell it's the frequencies . The frequencies your device have seem to be different than the frequencies the s3 have on your carrier. If it's not that then you can check your apn settings.

What model is your phone, and what model is his phone. You said you brought your phone from a competing carrier who is likely using alternate frequencies that your phone might not be picking up either due to hardware or software limitations. Without knowing the hardware, and where it came from in the first place, we can't figure out what frequencies your phone is looking for and can't answer your question effectively.
download an app that will show you what is the type of connection you are actually on.
I think that maybe its the matter of incorrect icon.

Gettint H+ instead of LTE

Hey guys I have a question, I'm upgrading from a Nexus 6p. On my current provider I have be reviewing LTE on my Nexus I just got my one plus 5 and now I only get h+. Is there some system devices in the devices that allows the Nexus to interpret the h+ as LTE ? Kinda hate seeing the h+ in the corner there.

You're not getting LTE... 4G should be displayed for LTE.
Have you updated to 4.5.5 already? 4.5.4 was a fix for vodafone NL users with this exact problem.

Mine shown "LTE" for LTE, not 4G. I get the H+ when on HSPA+ (TMobile here, FTR).
I don't think I've ever seen "4G". Maybe it's because TMo has multiple technologies it markets as 4G, so it's ambiguous.
Koodo in Canada also displays 4G+ for LTE. But if on a Telus SIM (same network as Koodo) it shows up as LTE. Speeds are the same. Looks like the OnePlus database for carriers is not really up to date.

If LTE/4G was working properly for the OP then either LTE or 4G should be displayed, NOT H+ which is HSDPA (3G) here in Australia.

Yes I remember I had an HTC One device and when I used it with my carrier I would always get the H+ but when I flashed a rom and selected Tmobile as my carrier the 4G icon showed up for me. I wish I knew where to go to alter these settings to have the H+ show up as LTE or 4G for me like tmobile does or like my Nexus device did. (Even if its fake lol)

Yeah I just noticed that after all this searching around, WTF kind of dumb move is that to alienate all those version users like that. Smh the reason why I didn't even take the time out to see if my band was included before purchasing was because of the news the released about how much more LATE bands they were including with this model.
