Seems not the usual bug.
Softreset won't do it.
Haven't tried hardreset by now (for obvious reasons
Speaker and mic went dead - more or less - while nothing is connected to the phone.
More or less? Yes, I can hear the ringtone while someone calls me.
I can't activate the 'Mithören'-function (monitoring? Sorry, don't know the english term - push the green button for a few seconds).
I haven't used the headset-connector for several month.
Headset-speaker works. Headset-mic not. It records some 'beeps' and that's it. Even tried second headset.
Mic and speaker and monitoring-function will work fine, when MDA2 is connected to external power. It won't work while just the power-adapter oder an usb-cable is pluged into the MDA2 without the power supply being connected to a jack or the USB-cable connected to a PC.
Speaker and mic work fine for some seconds after power is unplugged.
While in the craddle mic & speaker work fine - even if the craddle isn't connected to anything!
Got some problems with the craddle to, but that a different matter.
I really hope you can help me. I would try hard reset only if all other options fail.

I would try hard resetting without messing with configurations etc. Just use Sprite backup to backup data and restore it after HR.
> use Sprite backup to backup data
OK. Where to find a version that will install from SDCard (problems with craddle) on MDAII with Windows Mobile 2003 (PPC 4.20.0)?
Even /products/sprite-backup/pocket-pc-edition links to v6.5.5.11 and >=v5 won't install on WM2003.
Will mail [email protected] for a trial version.

Maybe it helps to fix the headphone jack. In some cases a bad electric connection is the reason for such behaviour. Does twisting the device-case change the sound, like inserting into the crandle?
Is the big jack in the middle clean and fixed?
> Maybe it helps to fix the headphone jack.
I rode the regarding thread and tried to fix it by (un)plugging the headset several times.
> Does twisting the device-case change the sound, like inserting into the crandle?
Ähhh, that fixed it - for a few minutes.
Re- and unplugging an USB-cable fixed it again - dunno for as long.
> Is the big jack in the middle clean and fixed?
It's clean but a little bit damaged/'displaced', because the MDA fell down several month ago with connector attached (damned double-faced Scotch tape).
Seems like a problem with the main jack. :-(

My Jam occasionally loses all sound. I mean everyting from alerts to the phone itself. It would only work if I plugged in my headset. I tried checking my headset and the contact in the jam, everything was OK.
Anybody experienced this? Does anyone know how to fix it?
Thanks.
Where are your tones placed? In the device or in the card?
I lost audio, all of it not just alerts
I think I know it. Same thing happened to my jam too.
Your jam does not recognize that u unplug your headphone.
Problem is; there's a little switch in your headphone socket, when you plug your headset it turns off the internal sound, and when u unplug it should normally turn on the internal sound. But if the switch is locked, jam does not recognize that u unplug your headphone.
My solution is, plug-unplug your headset's plug (or something thinner) several times in different angles carefully to your socket while your jam is playing something. Till u hear the sound.
Mine is ok now. And I don't use any 3. party plug adaptors anymore.
(sorry bout my bad english. hope u got it.)
I have the same problem with my MDA Compact. The plugging in and out of the headphone didn't help much either.
It's hard to tell whether it's the headphone "switch" or the external speaker that is broken. Is there a software for PPC that can recognise whether there is a headset plugged in or not? This would help identifying the problem.
I think there are 2 external speakers. One is at the back, the louder speaker. The other is at the front, active during a phone call.
If they are both down, it seems to be a switch problem.
-btw, when I was having the same problem, I lost the mic too..
Did you use only the original headset or some other plugs?
I only lost sound from the external speaker at the back. Everything else was working fine. As you correctly pointed out, if it was a switch problem I wouldn't have been able to make calls using the front speaker as the sound would directed to the headset. In my case it's the speaker )at the back) itself that is the proble. I have now sent it back for repair...
... and I have to wait for 14 looong days before I get it back, and that's excluding delivery time!
Hi,
My exec is stuck in headset mode, it appears to think the handsfree is still plugged in and will only use the headset mic and earpiece even if not plugged in. I've tried a soft reset to no avail and i really dont want to do a hard reset as i have no way of backing anything up at the moment.
Any suggestions?
thanks in advance
Brodie
This is a fault that goes all the way back to the original devices...
The way to fix it is to get your headset jack, and try various ways of quickly but forcefully unplugging it. Happened to me the other night and eventually I managed to force it to recognise the headset was removed and it came back out of the speaker.
Cheers
Ant
sorted now, not sure if it was unplugging or not but i made & recieved some calls and unplugged it and it works!
thanks for the speedy reply and solution.
cheers
Brodie
I also have this problem today....but I dropped my xda exec on the ground and then all the sound is gone.....only headset and bluetooth are worked....
I think I damage the phone somehow.......
But I will still use it...

Thanx Anton. My XDA experienced the same problem and I was veeeeerrrrrry sad about it.
Then I came across your suggestion and, BINGO! It worked.
*Sorry for the duplicate post*
This just started happening on my JasJar today (system audio returned after poking the headset in/out a few times), after 11 months of use. Does this get worse over time? Should I bite the bullet and try to get Imate to repair it?
Please advise!
Damn it, I've got the same problem since yesterday
I can hear calls in handsfree mode (using the built-it handsfree mode) and with an earphone plugged in but not through the speaker besides the display.
Strangely, the internal mic works well (I mean, the called person can hear me). Is it the same problem you're talking about or has my speaker just collapsed? :?
.ox
EDIT: I've noticed that only the speaker above the display seems to be muted. The one on the backside of the display and the two speakers in the main body (when using handsfree mode) work. So I guess, the speaker's dead, isn't it?
2nd EDIT: After plugging a headphone in and out about 20 times and applying pressure on the display receiver it suddenly started to work again. I'm not sure what was causing this problem but even a hard reset didn't fix it so I guess it's a hardware (or firmware) related issue.
Same Problem
After working fine for months, with and without the earplug, my MDA Pro has started do the same thing--it's stuck in earplug mode. I've tried plugging/unplugging the earplug for about five times in a row--didn't help. Do I really have to do this 20 times? Jeez--I'm afraid of messing up something else. Could there be another solution? UPDATE: I just now tried plugging/unplugging 20 times--no help!
OK, the solution is the same as that for the loose USB port--send the MDA Pro to the fine folks at Pocket PC Techs and let them fix it. They replaced the earplug jack and got the unit to work perfectly with and without the earplugs. $75 plus shipping. They misplaced my stylus, but sent me a new one right away. I'm very happy with their service.
I've had this kind of problem with a Nokia 8310 which I've carried for three years. I believe it is a physical problem with the headphone socket which may be caused by lateral force on the jack while plugged in inside a pocket. Wiggling and unplugging the jack repeatedly makes the phone socket work properly. There is a small switch inside made out of a metal spring. All you need to do is wiggle it.
The phones which go silent after being dropped may be a different matter.
hi, i got an imate jamin and i need to replace the audio jack were the handsfree pug in, do anyone know where i can find to buy this part please or if anyone had the same problem how did you solve it.
thanks guys!!
Dodgy Audio jack
My audio jack plug works fine BUT when I unplug the headset, the phone stays in headset mode i.e. no sound from the speakers. If I plug/unplug the headset a load of times it eventually goes back to normal.
Any ideas. My solution is never to use the audio jack!
Audio Jack
I've had two M600's which have done exactly the same thing, both replaced by Orange, I've now upgraded to an M700 and unlocked the old M600 with a PAYG sim and guess what that one has now lost speaker sound so that three with the same fault and this M600 has never had a headset plugged in.
Has anyone else had similar problems?
i had the same problem othillo before it broke so be carefull cause your is about to brake too, i mailed imate and they said the only way to fix it is to send it to them in dubai.. not relally keen to send it there .. but till today i havent find ther part any where it seems that imate dont send out parts ... as soon as i find an alternative i will post it here..
Is this problem caused by the connector itself or is it something else? If it is the connector I can buy a new one at the local hardware store and modify it a little bit to make it fit in my S200, probably going to replace it with an 3,5mm jack if that is possible...
it is caused by the connector in fact htc the original makers of the prophet on there new models they changed it to a usb connector for the handsfree i changed my connector many times with regulas 2.5mm connector but the sound doesnt work properly. what it does it comes out with out bass then when you push the talk button on the handsfree sound comes out good. another thing i noticed is if when you insert the jack plug in the connector and you pull it out a little bit the sound comes better and the talk button works, i know for fact cause i tried it that its not from the handsfee cause i tried it on another device and work properly. the actuall connector for them is different from what you find to buy even if you plug in normal 2.5mm headphone sound doesnt come out right . if you manage to make it work and modify the connector please post it here so who got the same prob like me can have an idea how to fix it... thanks
Audio Jack
Here is what the problem is:
Audio jacks have what is called a normally closed contact. Each contact point actually has 2 parts. In the closed (no headset) the 2 part of the contact point make contact (shorts). This enables the signal to pass through the jack to the phone speaker. When you insert a headset, the 2 points open (break contact) and signal only goes to the headset.
I'm talking from experience as a sound engineer for over 30 years and this is usually the problem 99% of the time when it comes to these type of jacks. One of the contacts (usually the ground when no sound or mic at all) breaks or can no longer "spring" back. I haven't opened mine yet but fully expect this to be the problem.
audio jack
hi jsapper, i got what you saying and your absolutly right .. the thing i replaced mine 2 times now been done by a technician who fixes phones/pdas the thing with the connectors i replaced the device doesnt work properly sound comes out with out the bass and the talk button doesnt work .. i guess that the original part got some extra connectors or most probably the pins are switched around..
do you know if there is any special connectors for them...
I have a similar pb with my S200:
After running tomtom during 2000km installed on my motorbike w/ a 2.5mm headset, sound seems to no work anymore (neither back or ear speaker), I suppose that vibrations against jack connector are responsible.
With a bluetooth or wired headset sound works.
I have soft/hard reset, upgrade to last WM5 rom, upgrade to WM6 rom, I have tried to get in/out a 2.5mm jack connector without any result.
The ring facility is working (w/ or w/o 2.5mm jack connected), so I can say that the back speaker is working.
I am looking for a solution too...
nb: I have my back speaker + screen replaced one time after 2months.
Dean.
Have you try resolder the Connector?
it was to damaged to be resolded
Hi everybody,
I aswell have this kind of problem from time to time.My solution is quite simple. You have to use the original 2,5" jack with the 3 black "dividings".(sorry for my english) This solution reduced the problem dramatically. If the problem starts now, just plug it in and out a few times and it should work again.
Cheers
Phone Jack is a mechanical mess ...
Same prob, used the headset, rear speaker dead. I opened the prophet, unsoldered the jack and found it misconstructed.
The body of the jack is plastic and not capable to withstand the forces of a plugged in headset.
There are two integrated switches - which - when headset is unplugged are closed and deliver the signal to the speaker. one of the switches does not close anymore when the headset is unplugged. My first solution was to unsolder the jack and bridge the contacts 2 and 4 as welll as 3 and 5.
The rear speaker functions now and I can use the phone.
Next step will be to find a jack solution on the market to finally solve the problem. I will keep you informed!
thanks buzzi will be looking in here... for your post!
i had the same problem with my audio jack and i searched many forums for a solution. the only thing i can say: if you really want to use it and you want go back in normal mode after unplugging, take a little needle. if you look at the audio jack (USB is left to it) you have to stick the needle in the right side of the jack somewhere an search for a little contact (the first time hard to find, the second time easy) and try to push it a bit to the left. so the prophet goes back in normal mode. it sucks but i didnt find another solution...except for buying a bluetooth headset and use software to hear music over that (for mono headsets u can use a programm calles BTAudioToggel, but make sure u use the Toggle software, because there is another one called BTAudio, it sucks because it costs money and doesn't work for me so well)

Friends,
My prophet has exactly the same symptoms. However, I opened up the phone and carefully examined the jack. It is crap, sure, but at least on my phone it is not at fault. I tested with a continuity meter and the contact mechanism was working perfectly. Those who tried this measure without success read the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=281331
In my case it is definitely a problem with the speaker, and it seems to be eqaully common. It seems that there is more than one problem dogging the speaker of ths model.
mine's got the small contact switch problem.
it started last night! SO Annoying. Plugging a friend's original 2.5mm adapter in and out solved it temporarily. Then it went again! I have only got a 3rd party 2.5mm plug, and it took me ages to trip the small switch back with that. I have now got a BT headset on order.
Can't wait for the newer design HTC headphone adapter as I have had this problem with 5 different devices! (Tanager, Typhoon, Hurricane, Tornado and now Prophet.)
would agree with hybrid the needle trick fixed it ran media player so i could tell when it was working again. it was mentioned before that using the 2.5mm adaptor with ibky 2 rings as opposed to 3 causes this problem. I can identify with this as i have been using my dopod h/free with no problems for months i use the adaptor to plug in my headphones one time and get a eap of issues!
i will adapt a h/free to plug in some nicer headphones!
Can i use the USB connection as a handsfree port on my prophet?
Cheers
Hi, Prophet's USB is not a USB hub and thus not usable for connecting external devices - only way is bluetooth ...
thanks buzzi
Hello,
i have a problem with my device: it has stopped to make sounds (as the click on selections, the music from a mp3, the ring of a call) i can hear the voice of the speaker in a phone call. But i can listen to everything if i put the headset on. It seems like the device is switched in "headset mode" turning off the main speaker. When i plug and unplug the headset i can hear (sometimes) the sound to come back, just to shut off the second later.
I've tried soft and hard reset and i've even installed the news rom: once installed it seems to work properly.. but this morning is "mute" again..
anyone would help this poor guy?
thanks in advance!
Execus me for this question, but I have to exclude the obvious. Did you try raising the volume utilizing the speaker icon on the top bar?
The volume is at the max and all the sounds are enabled.

Are you using any siftware which might conflict with the OS?
Test the volume with no software installed and BOTH sliders at the maximum (UP)position, also bear in mind that the installed windows media player has a volume slider of its own.
Sadly not: the problem is still there even after an hardware reset, without any other software installed. And if i plug the headset i can hear everything, so the volume is up.
It seems like the device is finding the headset even if they are not plugged, thus turning the main speaker off.
...maybe a broken loudspeaker...
I'm afraid to say this , but before to have my trinity I experienced a similar problem with my old JAMin , were the loudspeaker suddenly stopped working and only with a new one ( loudspeaker) I recovered the correct " voice" of the device.
in this case it seems to be the same , but to be sure you should be able to mesure the impedance of it ; normally should be around 30 ohms ...
when mine was broken , it was completely "open" ....
but to do this you have to open the device !!!!
I'm sorry , any other idea...

From what you say i think we can safely rule out the loudspeaker being damaged(you wouldn't have been able to hear anything ,not even for a second), it's more than likely that your problem has to do with the miniusb audiojack which might be shorting out,the only thing you can do before taking the device to a service center is insert a miniusb cable in the jack and carefully move it sideways and up and down, this might resolve the issue.

And... sucking the jack... although this might gives a too strong picture of how much you love your trinity
Thanks a lot,
moving the jack seems to solve the issue sometimes..
I was wondering: are there any settings on the registry to avoid the use of the headset: maybe if i can set the device to never use the headset the problem with the switch could be bypassed...
lost sound
well my trinity just did the same thing.
Was working fine one minute, then suddenly no sound. Plug in the headset and it works fine, but without the headset I can connect to a call but i can not hear the other person and strangely they cannot hear me. Seems like my phone is stuck in headset mode somehow.
Haven't done a hardrest yet, but i guess thats next . . .
the internal speaker only works for Windows events and playing music ......
But when I try to use the phone the speaker doesn't work. The result is, that I have a phone without phone-functions.
In my opinion the phone-application still uses a headset-profile and can't switch back to use the internal speakers. First of al I tried a softreset and later a hardreset. Didn't help ;-(
Try this:
Take a needle in your hand and try to rummage a little the earphones plug (near the usb slot). Not too hard but not too little.
Check if it helps and get back to me.
@ try the needle: I wouldn't do it!
I'va used the original earphones, but it also didn't help. For me it seems that the phone changes its profile while (un)plug the headphone. In my situation the phone couldn't change between the internal and external profile and the result was, that the internal earphine, mic and speaker didn't work. Absolutely nothing helped. I gave up and went to bed ......
The next morning nothing has changed. After approximately 12h the phone made some curious noise and everything works now fine. Now I'm happy, but I did nothing. Maybe there a task in WM5 that proofs the internal status and repairs itself?!?! ...or my phone-jack cleaned himself and stopped notifying a plugged headset ;-)
Thanks xda-developers and its users for ideas!
Thats a problem with HTC devices.
There's a little connector in the earphone slot which bends in the way its not supposed to bend which in fact causes the effect that the phone thinks the earphones are plugged in.
If the problem occurs again, try that needle thing i described, coz many users reported it works.
omg, that just solved my problem (not beeing able to hear anything on both speakers)
i put the earphones in the audiojack and while i slowly pulled it out i tried to rotate it in all directions and pressing it outwards and POP, sound was there again !
thanx so much
It REALLY works. I needed just 10 seconds with the needle to bring both the speaker and the microphone to working order.
