[i9000M]i thought MTP issue was fixed with Kies - Galaxy S I9000 General

we're gonna hit 2011 in less than a month.
Great, Bell has finally released Froyo, being one of the latest to do so.
Since i didn't really need Kies before, i never installed it, or tried to make connections.
Now i find out about these MTP Driver issues, not having the correct driver..... having to factory wipe your phone etc.
I have the 1.5.3.10103_102 Kies
So basically im in Kies mode, have no SIM card nor external sd card in the phone.
I connect with my PC (WinXP SP3 32-bit). the MTP Application screen on the i9000m just loops on that initializing stage.
----------------------------
I've basically read the majority of the threads and have little to no clue what to do. Since there is no clearly defined solution, as everyone seems to have a different cure
This is like buying an Iphone or an ipod... (whatever) and not being able to connect with iTunes

I had this same problem. The issue was that the MTP Application keeps failing if you have a file on your device with an extension longer than 16 characters.
i.e. filename.reallylongextension
For me, it was the Kobo app that had some long filenames. I deleted the files and then it connected to Kies again. Google the issue and you'll find some forum where someone wrote a little app to show you all the files on your phone that have long extensions.
Hope that helps!

I know, it's pretty bad isn't it? All I can tell you is what worked for me. Wipe everything :|
I copied all the data off my internal SD, wiped it, did a factory reset, and that worked. I've heard that you just need to go through and remove offending files because Kies can't handle certain length file names or something ridiculous like that, but I'm not going to mess around with that. It's easier just to clear the storage and restore it when you're done using their shoddy program

Safely Removing G1 in ubuntu...

Hi, i searched and couldnt find anything... I just installed ubuntu and have been dual-booting with windows Vista for several weeks now. My question is im a windows (redheaded step)child and im not too familiar with linux' inner workings yet...so i have not been doing anything to "safely remove" my G1 when in ubuntu, cuz i thought that such an option doesnt exist...problem is now i think ive corrupted all my data on my SDcard and i was just hoping that someone could tell me how to do this correctly in ubuntu? Do i hafta mount it, and THEN unmount it before i should unplug it? I dont even know if this is the problem, but ive been watching my logcat and it gives me some Dbus error when i plug in USB and it doesnt come up on the phone with option to mount SDcard, and windows doesnt recognize my device anymore. Pretty sure i corrupted my SD, im pretty sure i can fix it without help, if someone could just tell me the proper procedure for removing devices from ubuntu? thanks in advance...
-BMFC
I dual boot ubuntu on my mac OSX, which emulator are you using (fusion VM, virtualbox etc...?)
(1) When you've properly mounted your SD card it should show up on your ubuntu Desktop. Just go to Places > Desktop and you should be able to eject the SD card (two if you are partitioning them and AppstoSD) by pressing the "eject" button. The SD card should show up in the left window pane.
(2) Also, you probably have corrupted your SD card and are going to have to reformat it, losing all of your data.
(3) Somewhere in your emulator there should be a USB button to see which devices are plugged into your host computer, and which ever one you select your emulator will read.
(4) Finally, you don't provide enough information for a real answer...
(a) What ubuntu are you running?
(b) Do you have appstosd?
(c) have you done a nandroid backup?
(d) Which emulator/virtual environment are you running?
Hope this helps.
In Nautilus (the file manager) there will be a little orange eject symbol next to the drive. Clicking it will unmount the drive, which you should ALWAYS do before pulling any kind of removable media out of the socket. Unmounting is the *nix equivalent of "ejecting" in Windows.
If you're running a command line setup, the command to unmount is
Code:
sudo umount /media/(insert mount name here)
Hope that helps!
I too dual boot and noticed they i wouldn't get the "usb connected" on the G1. After some tweaking a few options; i noticed I would get the USB connected IF my usb debugging was ON. [settings- applications- developement- usb debugging]. I have to check for Ubuntu and uncheck for windows. I hope that helps
you see the problem is that ive never actually mounted my G1 in ubuntu, i just plugged it in to charge...so i never had to unmount it and theres no "safely remove" function, that i could find, so i figured that linux was just secure enough that it didnt require safely removing devices....oops...in answer to your questions, first im not running any VM...im ACTUALLY dual-booting. i have windows vista and ubuntu Jaunty running side-by-side, on a compaq presario f700. I DO have USB debugging ENABLED, and right now im running JF1.42rc33 still, im prolly gonna be wiping and upgrading to SOMETHING today, i was kinda just holding off cuz i like my theme, but my phones f-in up so nows as good a time as any to start fresh. I dont use a2sd, just my caches for market, browser, and maps are on sd. Ive been having trouble on my g/f's hp Pavilion pc running windows vista...we both have g1's and HERS is stock, unrooted, and she just got the OTA a couple days ago, since then the computer has been hating on MY phone, it says the drivers screwed and it wount bring up the option on my phone to mount the sdcard. hers still works fine, and mine still works fine hooked up to my laptop, just not hers...so i dunno if THATS a cupcake issue or if its cuz i didnt remove it from ubuntu right...im gonna format my sd AND wipe my phone, and ill get back to you guys moentarily, thanks for all your replies.
-BMFC
If all you were doing is charging, and you didn't mount it, then your original assumption was correct. You don't need to unmount something that was never mounted.
mm0
ok well then somebody help me out with this: i have tried for two days to get my sdcard to format, and IT JUST WONT. I cant get it to even be recognized by my girlfriends computer, but her G1 running UNrooted TMOCupcake still works fine, kinda makes me wonder if hers didnt get some kinda updated driver packed with it? The cupcake, i mean, not the phone...i dunno. Anyways my phone WONT mount in ubuntu at all, it shows up but when i try to mount it it says "No media on Volume" and wont open it at all. so in windows it ACTS like its doin everything i want it to do...i tried to format my sd yesterday and i sat here and watched it the whole time, and when it finshed it said: "Format Completed SUCCESSFULLY." so i SAFELY REMOVED IT, unplugged and plugged back the usb, and when it came up EVERYTHING WAS STILL THERE!!!! my problem seems to be my sdcard/doom folder...it tells me that the folder \doom is ENTIRELY UNREADABLE.
ahem...on a side note, all these things happened at once...(same day)
1. My g/f got the OTA cupcake update...
2. I updated some apps from the market, the one that im suspecting right now is called "Cards(-)" by Coderminus. After i updated it, i went to play Doom, and instead of playing like usual, when i hit the "Play" button, it just exitted to home. So i checked my logcat and the Cards(-) app caused ALL KINDS of runtime errors, and so i uninstalled this app.
3. My market starts crashing all of a sudden. I cleared the cache and it SEEMED to fix it...for now.
4. Uninstalled Doom (ver. 1.29.666) and then went and deleted my doom folder.(I thought) Reinstalled newest version of Doom (ver. 1.31.666)
5. Tried to redownload the WADs to play, and i could get it to play, as long as i didnt try to download the sound files. Everytime i tried to get the sounds, it would act fine, but then when id go to play the game itd just exit to home again....
6. Repeated step 5. like 6 times....
This was all like 2 days ago? 3 days ago? and ive been messing with it ever since, and my PHONE is fine, but my SDCARD appears to be, for lack of a better term, ****ED. i cant even format it, ive tride 3 times, it just all comes right back when i plug it back in...i even tried to put an update.zip in my sdcard and update from JF1.42RC33 to (I was gonna try Dude's 1.2b) so i put that in there, and removed it and when i went into my file manager on the g1, the update wasnt there! i cannot seem to be able to make ANY changes to my sd...SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!
-BMFC
Try ti format your card from within your phone. Unfortunately that's the only issue I can help you with.
Edit: try doing a system wipe on your girlfriends phone from the recovery menu. It should solve the crashes. You will wave to reinstall all your apps tho.

I...didnt even know that was possible...im not seein any options to do that...you know some terminal commands for that or somethin? Cus when i got into my file manager (i use aFile, cuz it has wireless transfer) i cant even delete anything from there, ANY folder i try to delete it just says "Failed to delete (folder name)"...so if you know how to do that then hook me up and ill try it...
-BMFC
EDIT: i think you misunderstood, THERE'S NOTHING WRONG with my girlfriends phone...its just that she got the US OTA and it happened at the same time as all this other, so i thought maybe it might have had some effect on how mine interfaces with her comp...honestly i doubt it, but until someone tells me im wrong im not ruling it out...
On your phone Goto your settings menu, sdcard and phone memory, unmount your card and then select format
No dice, seems you may be on a diff. ROM than me, i dont have that option, i unmount the card, and thats all that happens, it unmounts it...no format option...
-BMFC
Damn that sucks. Does your girls phone have that option? I wish I could help you out. But I'm at a loss
Sdcard IMPOSSIBLE TO FORMAT....need ADVANCED help!!!
hi i posted a thread here for help, and i did so cuz i need help from someone INTELLIGENT. The mods have now moved my post to the "General section" of the dream forum, where i cant get **** for help. The reason i didnt just post in that section, where it goes, is CUZ NO ONE CAN OR WILL HELP ME OVER THERE....i need a devs help or somethin...THATS why i posted in the dev section...cus its pointless to try to get support from end users...i might as well just sit in the bedroom with NO COMPUTER asking MYSELF what the answer is...so first off id like to thank the AWESOME mods here for burying my post head-high in a section that i cant get any support in, EVER. THEN, id like to ask some dev(s) or SOMEBODY, SOMEBODY INTELLIGENT, please go to
this thread
and read, and im BEGGING you for help!!! To whoever helps me figure this out i would gladly donate to WHATEVER cause you have!!!! Honestly, if you ONLY read MY posts, you wont miss anything important, except some guy with the SAME SKILL LEVEL AS ME telling me to wipe SOMEBODY ELSES PHONE and see if that works...****.
SOMEONE PLEASE try to help me out before the AWESOME mods here at xda move this post, too. Im not sorry im posting in the wrong secrtion cuz this is where the help is and thats REALLY what i need right now. So MODS, you can move my posts all day long, ill just make a new one linking to the old one till i get some support...suspend me...BAN me, i dont care, ill just keep coming back with new usernames and accounts until i get some help, cuz THATS WHAT THE F*CK SUPPORT FORUMS ARE FOR. Im really pissed at whatever mod moved my post, cuz the SECOND i posted that thread initially, i got like 4 or 5 replies, thats why i LOVE this forum, cuz it has GREAT SUPPORT, when you can actually get your question seen by a dev, that is. but as soon as my post got moved i got several replies from one DUMBASS that was TRYING to help, and ill give him that he was just tryin to help, but i have a problem with my phone, and this guy tells me i should WIPE MY GIRLFRIENDS PHONE. WOW. Just wow. Someone please go read my problem and post there, or post here, with some answers....MODS PLEASE DONT MOVE THIS THREAD I AM TRYING TO GET SOME HELP!!!!

yea *****ing like a 4 year old will you nowhere. no one owes you anything.
If you have a camera, try using that to format your memory card. Hope it works.
lol ok first off take it easy on the mods here, i'm speaking of your other post, they try to keep these forums clean and it isnt an easy job all things considered.
the way i see it you have 2 options.
1. Throw your card in a digital camera and use the camera to format it. I works most the time when a computer wont, several times my pc wouldn't recognize/format a card but my ****ty digital camera had no problem.
2. if that doesn't work, splurge the $8.99(or less) it costs to get a new sd.
I've even seen 8gig class 6 cards for around $20 and 4gig class 4 cards for $10.
edit: wow just a min too late

MTP Application Crashing

Where would I start to troubleshoot an issue with the MTP Application?
If I select the Media Player or Kies options, the MTP Application continually crashes and restarts every second.
I have connected the device in USB Debugging mode, then reconnected again and it still does it.
I've done the driver installation in the kies application and I've reset both the PC and the phone, behaviour is consistent. Kind of frustrating as I can't upload media (DRM....).
IF anyone has advice on where I could start troubleshooting this issue I would greatly appreciate it

Here is a fix my friend but say goodbye to your saved games and files..
[try transferring or backup your files using wifi or bluetooth in case you have important files on your phone]
[and also, try to backup your phone contacts to your sim because formatting will wipe your entire phone's data]
Once that is done, try to do the following.. go to Settings -> SD card and Phone Storage -> Unmount SD -> Format SD
Once you have formatted the SD card, go to Settings -> Privacy and then choose "Factory Data Reset".
Your phone should now be detected once you connect it to your computer this time around.
Hope this helps.
I've done this once before. I spent a significant amount of time getting the right data under my contacts and linking them properly, I need to know how to find out why kies is borked. Otherwise I'll wipe the phone and possibly be stuck in the same situation again.
Have you had this issue occur and this fixed it though?
I had similar problem. Tried everything you mentioned and nothing helped.
In the end I formated externas SD card. Flashed SG1 firmware and rooted the device (all done in a matter of 30 min).
It fixed the MTP aplication crashes (dont know what of three really did it).
I'd been having the same problem on my Galaxy S.
It had been working fine, and I've done nothing to the phone to change anything with it.
Just opened the MTP App on the phone, then just crash, restart, crash etc and kept looping like that.
(Mines the Optus AU version too - might be a problem with something on there?)
Anyways I used the WebSharing app to download all my files to a zip on my computer, then unmounted and formatted the internal SD card - and then rebooted the phone.
Once it rebooted, moved the zip files (unzipped) back onto the internal SD as they were originally and plugged into the USB and it all worked again.
Hello everyone, I'm new here and own a Galaxy S now for two weeks. Yesterday I to noticed/encountered the rebooting mtp application when plugging in the cable while the USB settings are set to 'connect to Kies'.
To be short I tried all offered solutions found on this topic on the web and in the end only the unmounting and formatting of the INTERNAL sd has helpt.
I made a backup via Websharing since selecting the 'mass storage' option didn't work for me yesterday. Obviously this is a slow way to make a backup. Try to only back-up what you deem to be imported files.
So the unmounting - formatting and rebooting (mounting) of the INTERNAL cards is the quickest solution and will safe you hours of work!
HOWEVER
Today I had the same rebooting MTP issue again. But since re-installing kies version 1.5.1.10083 I'm able to connect to the pc via 'Mass Storage'
You will see drive F: and drive G: if you at least succeed in connecting via the mass storage option.
I than did 2 things:
1.
I recently made some pictures and also copied some pictures from my pc to the G: drive ( INTERNAL SD) I renamed the pictures to short names so they didn't exceed 16 characters (one of the solutions I read online ).
2.
In the map data I found folders with the names of in my case Touiteur and Beautiful Widgets. Both folders contain a CACHE folder. I deleted the complete touiteur folder and thus also its CACHE folder.
Now I connected my Galaxy S to the usb cable again and behold, the rebooting of the MTP has stopped!
Now I'm not technical at all and have struggled with this issue the whole of yesterday ending up formatting my internal SD. And to be honest I don't know for sure what the working solution is in the end but can narrow it down to 2 things you may try if you can connect via the 'mass storage' option:
1. try giving pictures in G:\DCIM\folder name a short name if they are long or try to remove the pictures completely (make backup) just to see if either of this works.
2. Delete the CACHE folders in the APP folder under G:\data and see if this works
Again, I'm unsure what or why I solved it on my Galaxy S but give it a try if you have tried everthing else and do not want to format your INTERNAL SD
I've got a fix
Alright guys, I posted a video on how to repair the MTP application problem, especially for you spencee, check it out. Go to youtube and copy paste: MTP Application Crash Fix. And click the first one. It's by abrar447. Hope this helps!
Ok, I'm having this issue again! I watched the video by Abrar447 and deleted every single file in cash I could find ( actually did a search on the word 'cache' on the internal drive. Although I know this should now work my TMP application keeps rebooting. Am I missing something here ?

Thanks again for posting this video. It actually worked for me, been trying to find the solution to that MTP crashing problem when trying to connect in Kies mode.
narrowed it down
I have this problem too. I saw the youtube vid and decided i'd delete one cache folder a time to see what was causing the problem. Found out that is was 'Sound Hound'. So i deleted the cache folder, MTP worked, then i used the app so it would create another cache folder, MTP clashed. Did it many times.
Hope this helps.

Really weird problem , after clearing the cache it works again.
I reccomend using CacheMate for Root Users (free or pro) which you can find in the market , you dont need to delete all the cache manually then
Hi..
Anyone know the exact name for the MTP Application..is there a way to replace the problematic version with a working version..On my ship with ROM. i9000dxjf4..MTP application showed steadily without keep crashing..
MtpApplication.apk
MtpApplication.odex.
If anyone has the working version (no crashing on Kies connection). can post here..I would like to experiment to overwrite it with a working version..

Perfect solution. Did the clearing manually - no success. Only Cachemate did the trick Thanks!

Hello,
I also had a lot of issue's with Kies. I also tried a lot. But the one thing that helped was removing SOUND HOUND (application and directory)
Hope this helpes for some people!
Cheers
I emptied the cache under the Android folder and it started working again. The thing is, as soon as I open the gallery, the cache is written again. I'll try to see if the new update fixed the issue.
The problem is the not cache in itself. The bug is the '16 character extension' problem. Google it if you like. The solution is to delete all the files having its last extension greater then 16 char, in your internal or external SD card.
I asked about the fix on twitter, the reply was this.
I found a small program which tell you which files are the problem.

Hello everybody,
i'm a bit new to Galaxy I9000 but i had the same issue with Kies and MTP apps. Actually i found out that the issue seems to be linked to file extension longer than 16 chars. Usually those files are inside cache directories so, you should just cancel them to fix it. I've got kies running correctly since then (last update of Kies running n Windows 7 64 bit). I know there is also a little app to scan files to search the 16 digits extension called "FileSearcherforKiesFix.rar" you can find it and download just putting it in google.
Hope this can help!

Is there an apk version of this? I'm unable to connect the phone to my x64 win7 at all right now...

Have tried everything and nothing seemed to work...
The "FileSearcherforKiesFix" finds some problematic files, but not all off them. Manually deleting long file names and cache folders seems to be insufficient either.. I think that there must be some cache files in other partitions that we cannot access via "Mass Storage" that are causing problems too. So we have to clear those files...
But thanks to a comment in this topic I have found a working solution:
1º Delete any problematic file with the "FileSearcherforKiesFix" method.
2º Use this app: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.aac.cachemate.demo , with the option "PowerClear" turned on, and clear all cache from the phone.
After this the MTP thing installed instantly and now everything works.
NOTE: The "PowerClear" option may cause some undesired effects in some apps.. Backup first, or, use at your own risk.
For me the problem started when I copied lots of MP3 to my phone.
I solve this like this:
I connected my phone using the media mode.
Searched for all *.mp3 files
renamed them all to *.! (whatever extension)
(I use a program called FAR Manager, which is something similar to the old Norton commander, but for windows)
Connected with Kies and it got recognised
Hope it helps others

Kies Driver issues on W7 PC - Desperate!

Hi all
I cant seem to find a definitive answer to this and Samsung support have not been very helpful.
When I try to install the drivers for the Galaxy S when connected to Kies I get a driver failed to load message.
It seems to be the MTP driver.
This is on 32 bit W7 laptop.
Does anyone have a solution to this? With Froyo coming but only via Kies it is becoming a bit desperate!
Thanks in advance
Simon
you are not alone my friend, everyone have grief with Kies
after installing Kies, try the option to Install Driver inside the Kies app
see if that helps
next alternative is to install Android SDK drivers
There seems to be a lot of issues with Kies. Mine is 'MainStage has stopped working'.
However there is little, or no, support for it. Loads of Kies questions and reported issues have gone unanswered on this, and other, Android/Samsung forums.
I've just managed to get the Australian Kies release working on my XP laptop. 5 or 6 installs and uninstalls, cleaning folders out from bad uninstalls, looking for reminants left behind. It took ages, but now at least I managed to get it working and clean my Orange SGS and flash it to JM1.
Just going to copy and paste the tips I wrote up on VF when I'd wanted to use kies to upgrade firmware:
Yakumo said:
Kies direct download link : downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/SW/201009/20100903113039859/Kies_1.5.1.10074_45.exe
This is the most up to date version as of writing this, don't use the auto updater it can take 2 hours, ridiculous update system going file by file for 10,0000 files instead of a single download than unpacker.
Install Kies, then click kies at the top left, and with the phone not plugged in select driver recovery. when that is finished plug the phone in.
If you still have a problem with it connecting, with it looping the MTP connection on the phone.
the MTP connection bug has been identified at last and though there isn't an official fix yet, it's not too hard to sort out yourself
filenames with an extension of longer than 16 chars on your SD cause the MTP problem, so anything after the last "." on a filename that is longer than 16 chars.
I think the largest cause of this is probably the '.thumbdataX-XXXXXXXXXXX' file you will find in "DCIM/.thumbnails" with any file manager app. You can just delete this and then try connecting
I deleted that file, and the entire TunnyBrowser directory, and the SoundHound app entire cache directory.
This was the first time I'd had the problem since I got the phone and wiped my SD card, but I hadn't been taking photo's till recently, I have a lot of other apps installed. Clearing those 3 things fixed the problem for me immediately.
Once I had done that I was able to install the JM1 firmware successfully, the phones auto reboot after flash seemed to fail after the samsung logo came up - after leaving it a long time it didn't progress, but I pulled the battery out for 30 seconds and the phone was fine after that.
I had backed up all my apps with ASTRO file manager before the install, and contacts with kies, but I did not have to do any restore after the flash in the end. all contacts and apps were still there.

Have you tried Kies from Samsung Australia? They have the latest version (1.5.1.100853)
Meh, my Kies just killed itself, decided to update and now it bombs out every time I connect the phone, tried rolling it back, but its still screwed.
How hard can it be?
I originally posted a fix, but the server rollback killed it.
So here it goes again
Download the new version from australia
Then uninstall the old version from your PC
Then delete the \kies\ from \program files
Install the new version of kies from australia
Done

Just got to a mac to give this a shot. Doesn't mount for me either! Shows a CD image with some of the pc installer files but not the directory of the phone itself. Very interesting. Upon unmounting, got a "The disk you inserted was no readable by this computer." message.

Same issues here! I am hoping one of you AWESOME developer types can help us Mac users out on this one. I have made multiple inquiries to both Verizon and Samsung regarding this issue. Surprise, surprise...they each point the finger at the other! I pretty much lost all hope when the last Verizon rep I spoke to suggested I purchase an external SD card reader to transfer files...gulp!
Same problem !!!
Doesn't work with my Mac. Also tried Factory Reset.. still doesn't work....
Looks like I am not the only one ....
Also, the update left a weird status icon on the top next to my 3g icon in the status bar.
Please help..
Thanks,

Hey, I think I may know what the problem is, even though I don't have a Mac to test. I'm running stock ROM with DL09 OTA, and I discovered that when trying to mount the phone in mass storage mode, it wouldn't. It just showed up as a CD drive that contained an installer for the latest samsung drivers, and an app that opens IE to a page to download some kind of Verizon VCast media manager app. In other words, Verizon is trying to save you from yourself by forcing you to use their crap media manager software, instead of accessing the contents of your SD card directly.
I then realized that I hadn't de-bloated by removing all the Verizon apps, so I froze the VCast and VZNav apps (and Bing, and a few others) in Titanium Backup, and after that, Windows will now recognize and mount the SD card as expected.
I suspect that the funky CD mode thing is what is messing up mounting it on your Mac, so would suggest that you freeze those apps on your phone (you can also go in with ADB or Root Explorer and rename the .apk files, if you don't have Titanium Pro), and reboot the phone, and then try mounting it again.

Can anyone confirm that this works? And particularly: which app needs to be stopped/"frozen"/removed for the fix.
I had searched a half dozen forums and not found a solution, that you found a fix is great news.
Not being able to access the SD card as a USB flash storage device is absolutely intolerable - I would say it's a serious flaw with DL09 and Verizon should "recall" the update or QUICKLY release a patch that "un breaks" it. The fact that they're probably doing this on purpose is sickening and infuriating.
I later confirmed that that doesn't fully fix the problem. The issue is in the kernel itself. Adrynalyne's 1/18 or later kernels fix the problem, at least for Windows, not sure about Mac, but there's a good chance it will. Try that and see what happens.

[Q] Touchscreen doesn't respond after using bogus photo recovery software

Hello, ladies and lads!
Here's a short version of where I'm at: after installing Wondershare' s dr.phone Recovery on my mom's PC and using it on her phone:
its screen won't respond to touch (can't enter SIM card's PIN nor open screen lock)
the On/Off button won't turn off the phone on long press (maybe due to screen lock)
on restart there's a yellow text that reads "Set Warranty Bit : kernel"
the physical buttons still work
I can see the phone's files and folders only through PC's command prompt, using ADB ('This PC\Galaxy Grand Prime' folder in Win Explorer says it's empty).
Ideally I want to keep her data (FB Messenger, Skype, Chrome, WiFi passwords, etc), and her phone to function again. What do you think I should do?
I think I need an advice and suggestions from someone more experienced than me - I don't even know trusted sites where to download the firmware roms from.
The phone's details are (I'm afraid you'll have to walk me through to get more details to this list, as I'm new to the forum):
Phone: Samsung Grand Prime
Model name: SM-G530FZ
Firmware version: G530FZXXS1BQC2 (Android 5.0.2 with Baltic bloatware, I guess)
Now in detail:
My knowledge and experience regarding the smartphone software & restoration is very basic (I've only restored the firmware to a LG-L70 once some years ago, and that's it).
Before the problem I lost some over 600 media files from that phone by Cutting and Pasting a folder from phone's internal SD to PC's disc. Now I learned never to Cut-Paste important or irreplaceable files. The files ended up on the phone, because a folder with over 800 files couldn't be uploaded to the Google Drive (the camera's folder had over 1k files in it, so I moved some of them to another folder, which the phone created on the internal partition rather than the SD Card, where the original folder was from).
Instead of using a trusted software, I foolishly Googled a photo recovery program for phones, using my mom's PC. A list of bogus recovery program sites appeared (had to look them up on her PC, as I found only legit, widely trusted programs now, using my laptop. Those darn Google's personalized search result algorithms!).
Before using the dr.fone Recovery software I synced most of the data to her account.
Used the "free" dr.fone Recovery software as per its site's instructions, the phone did a restart and the touchscreen went unresponsive to touch. Later the software showed the lost files it found, and offered to restore them for a sum. Naturally I declined.
The software said that to return the phone to normal I need to disconnect the USB cable. I did so, but the phone's screen remained unresponsive to touch, even after restart (long-press [Pow] + [Vol-]).
I tried connecting an USB mouse via the dongle, but the mouse cursor didn't appear (maybe this phone doesn't have this functionality).
Now, after using that FAIL-covery program, I was overly cautious not to make things even worse.
I wanted to make a copy of the phone's internal SD state (or is it called a phone's hard drive?), to get the media files from the clone and to have a backup of mom's files.
But I failed: I downloaded APK, ncat, KingoRoot and BusyBox. Tried to follow the steps in this video: youtu[dot]be/KKkvkCgMeMA. Got stuck at "busybox not found" at about 10:27 mark in that video ("dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0" "busybox nc -l -p 8888"). Turns out you need to run some of the apps from that phone prior to that step, and I don't know any workarounds.
Then I remembered that the files were on the external SD in the first place. Well duh! I then connected the Micro SD card to PC's reader via a Micro SD adapter. To make a copy of the SD card's 1s & 0s, and to restore the media files from said copy I used ZAR (Zero Assumption Recovery) z-a-recovery[dot]com/. The backup creation (an .ISO file or some such) and media recovery are free of charge.
Now I only need to remove duplicates and blurry pics (I think I had a Moleskinsoft's Clone Remover from an old PC magazine's CD lying around somewhere for the latter). Oh, and I better not forget to run a malware scanner on her PC and remove the mr.fone installed services and folders from it. Went a bit off-topic here, sorry!
Last I pulled a wifi passwords file with "adb pull /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf" command as per instructions on this page: mashtips[dot]com/see-wifi-password-android/. I don't know whether putting the file back on that phone will do the trick or not.
That's pretty much all.
I hope the situation can be resolved and I appreciate your input! :fingers-crossed: Maybe someone has come across a similar post, has constructive commentary or knows something obvious that I haven't come up with? Thank you in advance!
Edit 30 Jan '19: Got the phone working. Accessed the phone with a Chrome browser extension (name here). All accounts except some mail account were gone. WiFi didn't work.
Found a stock ROM here: (address here).
Found the Odin3 tool here: (address here). It came with a different locale ROM.
Flashed the 1st ROM with Odin. The screen started to work.
Flashed the 1st ROM with Odin again. The WiFi started working.
I'll update this with links soon.
I've got the exact same problem after using Dr Fone app!
Hi there.
I've got the same problem with my Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime after using Dr Fone, like you. I contacted Wondershare website from which I downloaded the app but they haven't bothered replying. Not happy at all!!
I contacted Samsung's support team and after trying different things (the usual stuff: reboot; remove the battery and SIM card; restart in Safe Mode; etc) which didn't solve the problem, they ended up telling me to reset the phone to the factory settings but that didn't work either.
Now my phone is stuck on the Samsung Galaxy Welcome screen which asks me to choose the language I want on my phone. The touchscreen is still unresponsive.
How did you manage to fix the problem if the touchscreen was unresponsive?
Thanks in advance for your help!
