Most of our devs are gone. They've run off to the Evo portal and ebayed their Heroes. In turn, people bought their Heroes on Ebay and we will have a flood of noobs coming. We probably won't have a rom update from a major dev ever again, and... it makes me feel empty inside.
Darch is still here, Regaw is still here. Not sure who else is.
Toast and flipz have said hero dev will continue, just slow. I think jschi didn't jump ship either. And he is a genius

It doesn't surprise me, it just... makes me sad.
When I saw Damage's new update, my heart skipped a beat..=(
But there is no hate at all towards those who went to the Evo.
I mean, they were doing it for free, so we can't really get mad lol.
But to answer, yes, I feel slightly empty.

Heh. Look at the bright side: now other people can take over the reigns; and trust me, some people here are more than capable at doing so.
Don't feel empty, but I am a little upset with HTC. They've pretty much made us dependent on the developers here. I would be fine with stock roms, but it's pretty clear that HTC is pretty much done supporting the Hero. 2.1 is it and the update comes with its own issues that weren't in 1.5.
I got an Android phone with the assumption that it would be supported with the latest updates at a faster pace and for much longer than what I'm seeing by HTC. It makes it pointless to ever do another contract if I'm going to be stuck with a phone that won't get regular updates from the manufacturer. I'm not sure if I would get another HTC phone. I hope Sprint gets the Nexus One.

^ this and i am thinking that devs from other areas will step into heros now that they can pick them up much cheaper than before the evo was released. look at some of the older phones, they are still going strong in the dev department.
i am not worried even if i end up with 'just' darchdriod as my daily rom for the rest of my contract (another 6 months or so).

I'm not that sad... lol. I am, however, sweltering, tired, and need to turn my AC on. Darchdroid is the best OC rom out there, and RegawMOD is the best NON-OC rom out there, so I think we are pretty good in the dev side of things.

The Hero is sort of the unwanted stepchild of XDA now. But, all the first-time Ebay adopters are coming to our "rescue".
I cant do what flipz, damage and darch do. Just naming top 3 roms.
But i can put things together and fix broken things. Ill be stuck with my hero for quite some time. So im always willing to collaborate with others to get something working.
Also im sure we could ask a few questions here and there to the main devs for advice and help. No matter what phone they currently use.
I think we have almost everything we can think of, OC, roms, JIT, themes etc.. I think that covers all the big breakthroughs for are hardware restricted phones. But we can always improve on them, many here are capable. So yeah it sucks these big names left but im honestly not worried about the future of the CDMA hero.
Save up and buy an evo.
This is just how the phone loop rolls, once theres something better , you don't go back.
I will be keeping my hero, but yeah look at it this way , XDA devs are not the only ones dumping the phone , so is sprint.

It does have "full root" but the storage has nand locked/protected. It's like that little switch on and SD card or floppy to protect it only its software not hardware theyll break it in a week or two. You can pull apks in recovery... and WiFi tether needs a netfilter kernel so give em a week and it will work.

Maybe it is time to send HTC a message and say goodbye. This thing looks nice and if it has the specs of the original Galaxy...... I do agree with your assessment about Samsung.....as far as software is concerned, but I have to say that the hardware and or manufacturer that Samsung uses is FAR superior to that of HTC. I came from an Instinct before the Hero. It was absolutely the worst software ever introduced on a phone but it was also the best hardware that I have seen to this day. Combine that with the upgraded tech inside and Android for the OS it really cant be bad. Then again, after the Instinct, I swore that there would never be another Samsung in my pocket. lol I'll probably keep to that promise.
While i agree that sammy's suck.. this looks to be a great play for sprint.. the more hi-end androids the better.. maybe they can steal some thunder from verizon and their onslaught of droids..
If sprint will market these hi-end androids against verizon and att showing that the plans are way better.. etc.. and do it right..maybe sprint can gain some some customers etc..
Take dan off the air.. bring back the pin drop guy from way back.. then promote the hell outta the plans and phones.. lol sure fire win in my book.. or just show some t & a holding the evo etc..lol
My fiance has the moment and I do kinda like theslide out keyboard, nice for the terminal apps and stuff. Also nice when you dont feel like swyping or typing on the virtual kb.

The International version (Samsung Galaxy S) and Sprint Epic 4G has front cameras. The Captivate and Vibrant does not.
I honestly don't get all the hype about front cameras. Why? What's the point?
It's new, untouched technology. Just because Apple marketed it doesn't make it a good idea.
Give it a year. I'm sure the "Galaxy S 2" will have one. Doubt it'll be a standard by then anyways though.

Yeah, that's what I used to think until...
I have an iPhone 4 and an i9000 (both have front cameras). I was testing both phones at the same time. I was going to return the iPhone in my first 30 days because iOS4 just isn't up to Android standards in my book. I also have a Nexus One on T-Mo that I mostly use as a WiFi hotspot.
I'd played with FaceTime once with my only other friend to have an iPhone 4. He lives in Florida, I'm in California and we wanted to check it out. No big deal on the first test.
One day I was driving to work and got the clever idea to connect the iPhone to the WiFi hotspot on the Nexus One. I then called my friend in Florida with FaceTime on the iPhone 4 and it worked just great over 3G. (You can also jailbreak the iPhone and use 3G Unrestrictor to just do it directly over the phone).
I had the iPhone 4 in a dash mounted holder and it was so cool. My friend's face was there on the dash and we were like in the car together. I still focused on the road, of course, but I could glance and see his face like you would with someone in the car with you when appropriate.
At one point he even asked where I was and I just switched the camera from front to back with the onscreen button and he then saw out the road as if he were riding in the car with me. Then I switched back.
We both really thought the experience enhanced the quality of our conversation. I decided to keep the iPhone just because of that.
So, yes, it's a new idea, and not a lot of phones have it, but even though Apple's ahead of the curve on that one, once more phones make it that simple to be face to face when you want to, it's going to change everything.
Nothing wrong with wanting a front camera in my opinion; those who do just are a bit more visionary than those who don't care about it yet.

Btw, I don't really have any feelings about the need for a front-facing camera, but that anecdote about doing an iPhone "video-conference" on the road via N1 WiFi is pretty cool. That' be a great thing to do while traveling.
Great, texting while driving is bad enough, now having a video chat while driving, please God tell me you don't live anywhere near me.

Its not that new. I remember there was hard advertising in 2003 in UK when carrier 3 got the 3g. Apple is always "revolutionizing" technologies that already existed for a while.
For front camera would be great for occasional video over ip calls, such as skype, or what fring did before.

Its not new technology. Hell, landline phones had video capabilities 10+ years ago, it never took off because its a gimmic. Facetime is a gimmic. Sure its nice but you will use it a couple of times for the "cool factor" then it will wear off, just like the Wii did with so many people.

Androidmonkey is correct. Video calling has been around for years. Japan (and I believe Europe) has been doing this way before iPhone4. Just because Apple says its revolutionary or magical doesn't mean they did it first. Apple is full of ****. Their marketing team is great at making people into believing what they say. People need to open their eyes. Apple-lovers = lemmings, automatons, etc. And another thing, Facetime over wi-fi is nothing more than video chat like on your pc. Good grief.

I've been running the leaks and couldn't be happier. Why wouldn't they make all Galaxy S devices the same besides the obvious radios for different carriers. Why not just release one version of the phone so the complexity and unique functionality would not be an issue?
I am also putting some blame on the carriers for molesting the phones with their crap too.

Yeah, the software provided by Samsung. If Samsung's build is buggy, the carrier obviously can't approve it.
I don't know why people keep blaming the carriers. While they may insist on certain programs or functionality, the software is ultimately Samsung's responsibility.
Froyo is starting to sound like "Wolf" to me.
No way to blame the carriers here. If it was there fault, how do you explain that all other similar class phones have had froyo for 3-4 months already? How'd those all get approved?
It's all on samsung here.
They have been saying next week for over six months.....their top selling device has become less of a priority that's all there is to it.

If a flash was important to you then why did you knowingly buy a phone that didn't have one? You can't blame TMO or Samsung for a poor purchase decision.
Looks like Sprint is going to have to give me a new phone since I'm on my third Shift since release, and this one has major antenna problems (lose data, can't make calls half the time, texts are intermittent, etc.). So I'm wondering if I should try one more shift or actually get an Evo. I'm not getting a Samsung device, they just feel like crap to me.
I don't know what to do darnit lol.
You could see if they'll give you an EVO 3D.

I say stick with the Shift . But I'm biased. Love my Shift, hands down best phone I've ever owned. I had an EVO before this. The EVO is a great phone. But a little too big for the pocket. Plus the Shift can be OC'd way higher. But either way your good. Plenty of Dev's on both phones. Plus you can run some awesome Mik roms on both. Just my two cents.

I'd stick with shift, but my question is did u ever root your phone or anything? Seems like u were having strange issues might just have needed a custom Rom or something? Just my input though

The Evo is likely my best option, but I'll certainly miss the keyboard. I even thought about the Nexus S or Epic, but I just hate the feel of Samsung phones, so I don't think they're an option. I'm not entirely sure they'll let me get another Shift, but if they do you can bet I'm asking for a new one and not a refurb
I've rooted all three Shifts multiple times, the first two were hardware issues (loose keyboard--me being too picky, then a loose ear speaker). Rooting it didn't help the service issues a bit on this third one, which is what leads me to believe there's an antenna issue

if you think the 3d part of the evo3d is gimmicky, just ignore it and realize its a really a CDMA version of the HTC Sensation. One of the best phones on the market.
The shift is a great device, but the 3d blows it out of the water.

Isn't the screen always in a "3D mode" though? I've only seen a 3D once, and only from the side, and it looked pretty weird at that angle. I'll have to go to a store and check it out
ok i my shift has a major antenna problems also i got one phone sent out but do they still change the phones for you?? and whats the $ for say a reg evo . i got my phone over clocked to 1.5 and sprint keeps telling me slower data due to the cpu is 800 not 1ghz like the evo i wish i could tell sprint a thing or too

Well, if you've still got the problems keep calling and complaining. The Evo and the Shift should be an even swap I think. I haven't called them to find out yet.
Granted, I'm on an employee plan and go through employee care tech support, so the rules and prices are a little different.
edit: guess I didn't have a choice...they're sending me yet another Shift, and probably another freaking refurbished one at that.
Well on the upside, since your on your fourth Shift. My buddy works for Sprint. You can actually request/ demand it be a new one. Also, if your unsatisfied with this one new/other. You can request they give you a different device equal to the Shift.

If I could get them to exchange my Shift for a refurb, I'd never activate it and have it on ebay so fast...then get something else...something that can be rooted. For now, I'll just be patient.

They told me that after my third one I could get a "like device", which I took to mean any device of a similar price range, guess I was wrong, or they were yanking my chain.

A refurb shift is likely not upgraded to 2.3.3 or whatever the upgrade was to--yet. This one's a week old and didn't come upgraded, so root was quite easy, even though it didn't help
It's definately a plus if you can still root it.

Maybe you'll get lucky with next one.

I certainly hope so. The first two just had minor problems, but the network issues with this one was unbearable

I don't actually work for them, my fiance does lol. The biggest perks about the employee plans are the much lower prices, yearly upgrades, no actual contract, and quicker tech support.
well, I got the new phone in the mail, activated it this morning. Other than having a somewhat loose slider again (which is going to be extremely annoying) it looks like it might work.
updated to 2.3.3 though, so that kind of sucks at the moment.

When my wife had the Samsung moment, I had to go through so many devices before they would offer me something comparable. Which was the intercept, an even worse phone. Not even the Hero was an option! Ended up emailing [email protected] and then reporting to BBB and finally got my upgrade reset. It was a total PITA.
