The proscribed method of pressing both up and down volume bar (while PDA is off) and then briefly pressing the power button doesn't produce the desired result.
Is there a programatical way of achieving this, please?
TIA
John
Try this, it may work:
Touch HD Clear Storage
You can also use Clear Storage to reset your device back to factory default settings.
1. On the Home screen, slide to the Settings tab and then tap All Settings.
2. On the System tab, tap Clear Storage.
3. Enter “1234” and then tap Yes.
I would check the buttons work then. I have used this method and it does work. Turn the phone off, long press on the power, yes to turn off. Then hold both volume buttons down, press the power button (keeping the volume buttons pressed).
When the boot screen appears you can let go of the volume butons.
Or use the clear settings above ;-)

I think the trick is to BRIEFLY press
the power button while keeping both
up and down volume buttons pressed.
A hardreset as described in the owners manual does not work ! Has anybody got an idea what to do ?
The reason why I want to make a HR is the following : after 2 weeks it happened, that sending an sms an error-msg pops up saying the "addressee is not known, sending anyway ?" This drives me crazy ! And I hope that a HR will solve this!
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and VOLUME
DOWN buttons, then press the END/POWER button shortly and release it. You
will then see this message on the screen.
This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to manufacturer
default.
Press Volume Up to restore manufacturer default, or press other keys to cancel.
2. Release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
3. Press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other
button to cancel the reset.

find it:
1. With the phone off, hold the Volume Down button and press and release the Power button.
2. You'll boot into the menu you see above with the little skateboard guys. Select Clear Storage from the list by pressing the Volume Down button.
3. Press the Power button, and confirm by pressing Volume Up.
4. Sit back while your phone reboots in its virgin state.
