Trouble mounting phone on a linux computer - Epic 4G General

Hey guys. I recently installed Ubuntu on a old laptop I had. And my phone would still mount in mass storage mode for file transfer. Well Ubuntu was a little slow on my laptop so I did a fresh install of Xuvuntu to try to speed things up. When I tried to mount my phone a usb drive came up called png and would not fully mount. Any ideas on what may be causing this?
Sent from my SPH-D700

There are some issues with xubuntu. I would recommend regular ubuntu or linux mint for novice users. On those distros turn all settings down to minimum and it should run as smooth as xubuntu.
what is your system specs?
I'm trying to learn as much as I can because I want to help support linux users on here. I don't see a lot of support for linux on here.

My laptop is an ibm r40 with a pent 4 1.3ghz and 512 ram. So almost equal to my phone. I was a mac user till my logicboard died last Dec and pulled this ibm out. On a side note a usb thumb drive I had works just fine on this computer. I can't understand why it won't work with my phone. The only reason I switched from ubuntu to xubuntu was because my wife complained that the computer (facebook) was too slow... you can't argue with a 9 month preg. Woman so I tried to find a solution and came across xubuntu. I am deff a noob when it comes to linux but I really like the whole idea of the community and open source to further the project and don't want to have to go back to windows but it may be my only choice if I want preformance and my wife to be happy and my phone to mount...
Sent from my SPH-D700

Lol I understand. My wife is happy with our linux machine. She didn't like it at first, but it sounds like a driver problem for you. Xubuntu does that sometimes. I'll look into it some more.
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic!

So I decided to go back to regular ubuntu but would like to know how to turn down some settings to get the best preformance. I know this is the wrong place but I figure I can find the right people to help
Sent from my SPH-D700

I'm an avid xubuntu user and don't have any problems... but if worst came to worst I would write a little script to mount the phone manually and link it to a hotkey if you use it often. Keep this thread updated with details and I'll try to help.
What does the output of 'sudo lsusb' & 'sudo fdisk -l' say?

Ugmoe I have a question. Is there another way to install cwm besides one click script in linux? I installed a pre rooted rom and now the script doest work to install cwm. Any suggestions?
Now to OP, at the top of the screen you need to go to your system settings and find, its been awhile since I've used the ubuntu distro, its either display or performance. And set effects to none. Try that. Il get a version installed and help further.
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic!

You're over my head. I am brand new to linux. I am a quick learner but have just started at zero. I decided to just go back to ubuntu which I know works. Its a shame because I could tell that xubuntu ran faster. Maybe ill give it another shot when I get my wife her own computer just for her facebook and photos. I am real intrested in learning linux and have been for some time. I just have to find the right starting point and fit it in between work a wife a two year old and a new born next week...
Sent from my SPH-D700

What ugmoe is saying is
step 1) in the drop down menus on the desktop, look for accessories - terminal
Step 2) type in "sudo lsusb' & 'sudo fdisk -l" without the quotes
Step 3) copy what is returned from that command and paste it here please

To mxcoldhit -- thanks for the translation. As far as the one click root /CWM installation I too haven't found a single script to work. What I usually do is crack-open the 'run.sh' scripts included with the one click roots and manually enter certain commands from the scripts on the CLI (or command line interface for you linux newbies ). I've found that option to work whenever I need to get/regain root. It also helps to boost your familiarity with what is actually going on behind the scenes.... which for me is one of the reasons I made the switch to Linux so many years ago.
to abmcbride85 -- the setting that mxcoldhit was referring to is located under System --> Preferences --> Appearance --> Visual Effects --> NONE . This will turn off any signs of compiz to go easy on your graphics card (or processor if you don't have a GPU in that particular machine). I jump around between all the different desktop environments from fluxbox, xubuntu, gnome, and everything in between. I have a certain softspot for Xubuntu though... Easier to configure and use then fluxbox with a good bit of the speed as well with just enough customization options to satisfy most of my needs. Xubuntu can be quirky though for a new user, certain things just don't work as you may expect, and unless you're determined to understand/workaround/fix those things I would recommend sticking with gnome. Hunt through your startup programs under SYSTEM --> Preferences --> Startup Applications and uncheck anything you don't use -- A little guess and check might be necessary here if you're not familiar with all the applications in there.

Thank you ugmoe, I don't think about that lol. So all ill need to do is look for the commands that install cwm and run those commands to install cwm? I haven't installed the android developer kit yet. Do I need to do that before hand? I'm going to install it later down the road anyways because I want to help the linux community here.
Edit: have you ever used heimdall?
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic!

Kinda a side note but my phone only mounts under ubuntu if usb debug is on.

You doing it wrong! Smali editing.

Ok good got your attention?
So actually I guess I am the one doing it wrong.
I am using baksmali to look at why ** doesn't work in the new 2.1 dialer. I have a feeling it has to do with the SpecialCharMgr in the new 2.1 dialer.
SpecialCharMgr.smali references"##", "#", and "#*#*", "*#*#" it only seems to be like ** would show up in here as well.
When I run baksmali on my work computer - I get smali files galore. When I run it on my laptop, I really only get the images/xml files. Not one smali to be found.
So what am I doing differently on this machine than the other? Does it have to do with the version of java installed? I thought it was the latest on both machines.
Also, I can't remember back to 1.5 (all 3 months ago) was it called HtcDialer.apk there as well? I have a phone.apk, but again, can't look to see if they are really "the same" or not. If 1.5 had an HtcDialer.apk can someone post it for me, I have 3 roms and its not in the /system/app of any of them.
what are you running for op system on your laptop? I had this problem and had to install 64 bit java (i'm on windows 7 64 bit). By default, only 32 bit java installs even on a 64 bit op system. You can always test, open command prompt and type java, see what ya get.

{WIP}Ubuntu-and many more distros to come-on our Eris! 5-7

So this is a work in progress, as we speak I am one step from being able to launch Ubuntu on the phone.
Ive been thinking about this for a while, ever since I saw the thread on the INC forums on AF.
This requires a custom kernel, as of now I havent overclocked it or even compiled a wlan.ko for it-meaning that theres no wifi and this kernel is only for stock roms.. Right now this isnt meant at all as a daily thing, but if it turns out nice, I may end up fully adopting it as my new project, and who knows what will happen then
I am not opposed to getting help from anyone with this project-thats the whole point of Android being OpenSource right?-but please keep me in the loop if you take this off on a tangent.
Ive taken a lot of different information, a lot of different files, and a lot of general help from people
First off i want to thank The Edge| over on #droideris despite him knowing that Andrizoid was on their IRC-Oh the horror!-he continued helping me out, linking me to helpful things and being helping with a few other things
I dont recall his XDA name, but if your around, make yourself known. You deserve a pat on the back for giving me a chance when the others didnt.
Second goes to Koush for putting together this any-kernel-updater which i will be posting separately because it is a freaking awesome tool, heres a quick breakdown of how it works
First off, this is a flashable tool, you add the kernel (zImage) to the kernel folder, zip it all up, sign and flash.
Code:
It copies your bootimage to a temp file so it has a space to work in
It then unpack the boot.img
Replaces the zImage you included ith the original one
Repacks the boot.img
Flashes the new boot.img with your kernel in it.
IDK how nobody noticed this thing before, its amazing. no more fastboot BS, and no more having to custom pack the kernels for your ramdisk.
Third i need to thank pez252 for his post on AF that gave me the idea and the basics to work off of. That includes the script and the ubuntu.img
Also want to thank Saurik for his VERY in-depth tutorial, helped me solve a few of the issues i was coming across.
TO DO
1. get a working kernel
2. mount the ubuntu.img in data/local
3. mount /dev, /proc, and /sys in their respective directories
4. chroot it all so it actually works.
5. overclock it <--easily done after it gets running
6. get wifi up and going <--also easily done after it gets running
7. get this going on an AOSP rom <--simple to do, will do it after it gets running
Downloads and the actual commands to do this in the next post-wanted to make sure you read before jumping right into it
First comes the kernel. Remember that this is VERY basic, no wifi and no overclocking and it only works on stock roms. Ill add the bells and whistles after we get it moving.
Flash the loopkern.zip from recovery.
Download this zip file. Once its downloaded, extract the ubuntu.img-its the ONLY part that we need at the moment.
Once extracted, put it on your SDcard in a folder called ubuntu.
Then comes the fun part, for some reason i along with quite a few others, werent able to get the commands to run as a script-weird huh?-but here they are, you can copy/paste them directly into the command line, but you obviously need your phone plugged in.
Code:
#Sets up the directories.
mkdir /data/local/ubuntu
busybox mknod /dev/loop0 b 7 0
#Does the actual mounting, after this command, you can actually see all the ubuntu files #under /data/local/ubuntu
busybox mount -o rw,loop -t ext2 /sdcard/ubuntu/ubuntu.img /data/local/ubuntu
busybox mount --bind /dev/pts /data/local/ubuntu/dev/pts
busybox mount --bind /proc /data/local/ubuntu/proc
busybox mount --bind /sys /data/local/ubuntu/sys
sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
After fooling around with it a bit, i was able to get everything set-up with those commands, after that though, i run into some issues. Now we will need to
Code:
busybox chroot /data/local/ubuntu /bin/bash
This is the big issue though, maybe im not familiar enough with chroot to get the syntax right-ive never used it before-or something else is amiss.
So! The point is, that only measly chroot is holding us back from installing a REAL Linux OS on our phones, complete with EVERYTHING. Theoretically we could run linux apps and all kinds of cool stuff.
this looks pretty bada**. im up for any learning curve so if theres anything i could possibly help you with let me know
well as of now, i have just about everything worked out. that kernel is enabled for loopback, and i worked the kinks out of the commands, only thing left is that damn chroot command. once thats worked out its all smooth sailing.
i need a nap. its 5 30 and i havent slept from last night yet
ill check back on it later, and ill get to work on it a bit more.
feel free to try anything you want! post your results-failures or sucesses-so we know what doesnt work so we arent wasting our time.
So I find this exciting even though I do not truly understand the implications of this working. This would provide us with access to our regular apps too or just Ubuntu? Either way, I'm down to try it out. If there is anyway I can help, I wouldn't mind. I used to run Linux for a little while, but never really dealt alot with programming type stuff. However, my phone is always in a state of disarray between flashing various roms and trying to customize it so I wouldn't mind trying to do some of this too. Would it be best to have Linux at home too with this? I could install Linux Mint 9 and dual boot...
Linux on a phone?!?
Don't let me discourage you but really, why?
The eris runs @528 mhz and a very low resolution, I am guessing any distro of linux on the eris would have crazy lag, it would be hard to see, not to mention hard to type and lack of drivers and things not working, etc...
I suppose this would be interesting try maybe in like a year or two when android phones are coming out with higher clock speeds, dual cores and larger screens, but in my opinion its just not worth putting in the time it would take to make linux useable on a phone.

i dont think that i will be personally using it either, but the eris is on EOL, we arent getting any more cool stuff. its up to us now to keep it going, and when i see a phone with a cool new feature i think 'HEY! We could do that too!'
EDIT:my roommate mentioned to make sure the permissions on the /data/local/ubuntu/usr/bin/bash were set right. I dont have time to try it right now, but itd be easy,
Code:
adb shell chmod a+x /data/local/ubuntu/usr/bin/bash
Then try running
Code:
adb shell chroot /data/local/ubuntu /data/local/ubuntu/usr/bin/bash

Linux on phone
It's a good thing Google didn't think Linux was a bad idea on a phone. The Adroids already running a Linux distribution. So why not Unbuntu as well. Makes sense to me.
Some people might think Everest is just a big rock, others see the adventure in exploring it.
Why the hell is everyone flaming this guy? All he does is put out awesome roms and try thngs outside the box. I would try an ubuntu rom if he gets it working. What if it's slow? Not fully functional? Who cares. So far 90% of the roms I've tried are not fully functional. I wish I could help work on this but I know very little about Linux and Ubuntu, but please keep up the development.
On a different note, since you think so far outside the box...My buddy has an HD2 running Android and Windows. From what he explained to me, he boots and runs Android completely from his sd card. Is it possible to do something like this on the Eris? Either to increase speed and performance on Android (sd card is the internal memory) or move to other platforms such as Windows and Ubuntu. Again, I have little understanding of how this actually works but if you want to PM me I can get with him and see what we can come up.

Yeah w/ ubuntu you could easily trim it down to under 200MB with a super fast UI its only a mater of compiling all the parts for a new device, this is a killer idea, just think about having a fully running Ubuntu system in your pocket, keep a few SD cards on hand or get a 16 or 32GB and you would have all the space you would need.
I have seen Android ported to the Eee and others, why not ubuntu or another distro to the phone base that Android rules?
so is anyone else trying to see this through?

It's not a false positive, the exploit that we use works just like any trojan - it provides back-door access to the system. We're just using a virus to crack open the system long enough to install a more permanent access to root.
That's right, viruses aren't necessarily bad - it just depends on how they're used
It is in deed a real virus, but it won't do much to your windows system other than piss off your av software... Could jump to linux and not worry about viruses...at least very few. Yes they exist, but rarely affecting a personal computer.

yeah true true. virus by deffinition yes. but technically anything can be defined as a "virus" by allowing access to "alter" the original programming to allow access to functions other than what the manufacturer intended. dont worry. most antivirus's find a virus in anything. a key generator shows up as a virus. dont worry. your safe.

What you wrote makes no sense, the reason the anti-virus detects it as a trojan is because it includes exploit code to obtain root in LINUX. It won't do anything to a windows box but it can completely own a vulnerable linux box. So telling someone they would need to switch to linux in order to avoid this exploit is ridiculous.
correct it obtains root, but do you understand how? the whole reason it works is by exploiting adb so unless you happen to have the phone version of adb included in your linux build i would think this is pretty harmless

YES, but the reason I responded to that last post was because he was telling someone to switch from windows to linux in order to avoid a linux exploit. There are plenty of valid reasons to switch, but that would have to be the stupidest one I have ever seen put forth.

The exploitation of adb is used to get the RATM file on the phone... then RATM uses an exploit in the linux kernel to gain root access. I'm pretty sure RATM isn't using adb to do its magic. What I don't know, is if it is exploiting a part of the kernel that is android specific, or a part that is in every linux kernel

Ok, but why?

Ok, so Ubuntu and now Debian can run on HD2. It's great, it's amazing but is it any use?
Why would you need a software designed for a pc to work on a device with less than 4 ro 5 times the screen size and with so less buttons?
I am by no means going against this, I am just thinking what use could this be.
No tomatoes please.
1. Make your phone cooler
2. You have a new "computer"
PC in a pocket. there are things that a full desktop environment can do, that a mobile one cannot. there are tools available to desktop PC's that haven't been ported to mobile ones for lack of necessity.
personally i do a lot of side job computer repair for friends and such, and it would be a lot nicer to have my phone double as a laptop, rather than carry around my actual laptop wherever i go. of course i dont always need my laptop when i do repairs, but sometimes i do for one reason or another.
so having a much more mobile and lightweight alternative to that is a very big bonus. and of course like the previous post.... it it pretty fun to show off ;-)
Uhh dude, why not? Why put a differnet rom on a phone, because its Great to do that and give ya a good feeling about it, even beter if you can make one.
Same here, its cool, its something else, its sweet.
ofcourse, doing things directly to the phone is way more trouble than having a laptop but you can leave some automatizations like 1click script to have your ssh or ftp server. or just place a test http site to show to your client on its own pc and you have it ready on the go. there are millions of posibilities. is up to you how far you can go.
Well, I can only really think of one application fire me. I work at subway and my boss wants us to take courses at subway university, which is online. But they aren't supported by my mobile browser, so having a quick ubuntu desktop on my phone would provide the advantage to study when I'm not at home. But other than that, ubuntu is just awesome!

You could run it as a Server. Strong processor, very little power consumption.
For example.
you forget one thing. you're not forced to put it on the device!
No one is forcing you to change to android or install WP7. yet you might go for them because they offer you more eye candy, applications, or just because you want to.
and that's what people here are doing. simply one more option for people who need a portable PC OS, for fun, or because they need it.

You don't make phone calls with a computer do you.
I think the most attracting part is to plug in some keyboard and mouse, fire up some commands through terminal over the mobile network -- A dream machine!!!
WHY!? Cause you can. why do some people have like 10 hauses, 50 cars, 5 boats... 2 planes. cause they can. thats why android, wm6.1, wm 6.5.x, mwp7,7.5, ubuntu... cause we can

Just bought an Atrix.

This is my first Android phone. I've previously owned the iPhone and a BlackBerry. I've sense ditched both for this Atrix. It's about a week old now.
I was heavy into jailbreaking my iPhone and modding it to how I wanted it to be, but this Android stuff is confusing the hell out of me. I just don't get it. I need the most remedial breakdown anyone can give me. I've been searching the web for days in and out trying to find something.
People have some really great information, though! That's how I came across this site. I hope to find more answers, although my mind almost exploded when I read through this thread.
Anyway, how do you like your Atrix? Any tips on making this device my own? I still feel like I should be back with an iPhone for whatever reason. LOL. It feels I'm too late to step into the Android world. I should have jumped on with the G1.
Oh, and any remedial breakdowns of rooting is welcomed! LOL!
Check out the ginger break thread for a nice break down. (really easy)
Enable swype (long press text entry)
Inquire about freezing some of the bloat with titanium backup
Start exploring the market
Download some emulators and play classic video games from the ol childhood
podcasts if your into that thing
Flash! Go to browser settings and change plug ins to (on demand) for quicker browsing and flash at your disposal!
Wait until you get uncapped upload speeds.. Oh man are you gonna love this phone!

First you are going to need sbfs and rsdlite in case something goes wrong.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
Then you will need android sdk. Installing this takes awhile btw.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
you might also want to learn some basic adb and busybox commands.
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
then you can root your phone with that thread you posted. If I think of anything else, I will post more.

I really want an emulator! We have one on the Xoom Tablet at my job. I play Zelda when we have a bit of down time, lol.
What are some good apps?

Great tip on setting the browser to use plug-ins on demand. Probably safer in the event of exploits too.

Yeah plus it keeps all your flash on hand and yet no slow down. Next time an iphone 4 user compares browsing speed you'll blow em away

I'm still not getting this stuff. Too many acronyms, too many... other things. I don't think it's meant for me to root this phone. LOL. I need a YouTube video or something. I have no idea what these instructions mean when they're telling to extract certain things in certain places, open certain things, install apk sbf and abc. Exaggerating, of course.
It's been over 7 hours and I haven't gotten any clarity.
Moved from iphone 3gs to my first android (Atrix) also.
I gotta tell you modding jailbroken iphones is very easy and very limited compared to Android phones. Even a stock outta-the-box android phone.
It's probably something like "want even more customizations = more work" for you with an Android.
Gold luck.
Its ok, its a lot to learn all at once. Just keep reading and asking questions and you'll get a grasp real soon. android is really educational and it took me a nexus one to figure it out.
Search for ginger break thats the easiest way so far I think. (sd card mandatory btw)

I'd be interested in a non AT&T branded ROM with app side loading etc. I'd guess that 2.3 will be the next big step though and wouldn't want to exclude myself from being able to upgrade...

Man, I've noticed that! I thought I knew a hell of a lot when it came to this stuff, but this Android rooting has made me realize that I'm somewhat of a novice. It's never taken me this long to grasp some computer stuff.
I also think it's because I bought my Atrix at full retail price and I don't have insurance. (I have a dealer line with AT&T. They made me provide my own phone.) I don't want to waste that much money if I brick my phone.

I'm going to keep reading and reading because I was referred to gingerbreak before I registered here. That's actually how I got on this site. It seems solid, I just have to figure it out. Reading up on terminology has made it clear to me what an ADB is. I just don't know how to use it.
Question: When I open this ADB file in the SuperOneClick zip, it opens a command prompt, displays some words and junk, an then disappears.
What am I supposed to do with this?
(I'm currently browsing this thead. I just don't have enough posts to post there.)

That is why I like using the adb from android sdk. Never liked doing it from oneclick even when I had a captivate. If you have android sdk, you can open a command prompt and cd to adb's folder and use the commands there. You can also make a bat file to make it easier.
If you don't know how to make a bat file, use notepad and type this
@echo off
cmd /k "cd c:\program files\android\android-sdk\platform-tools"
and save it as .bat
Note if you have 64 bit windows, it will be program files (x86)

Yeah, the learning curve is a little steep. Especially if you have never worked with linux before. This helped me a lot with my first android phone. This is for the n1, but most of the info applies to all android phones.

Lol buster...
Anyways I'm pretty sure you don't need to connect to computer for gingerbreak.
Its via an apk.

Not correct.
Unless you already have sideloading enabled, you will need to connect the phone to a computer.
BTW, return it while you can.
I got my Atrix and the first night I spent like 3 hours installing gingerblur and a ton of apps. It was GREAT. First android phone. I can't wait for 2.3.
