You doing it wrong! Smali editing. - Hero CDMA General

Ok good got your attention?
So actually I guess I am the one doing it wrong.
I am using baksmali to look at why ** doesn't work in the new 2.1 dialer. I have a feeling it has to do with the SpecialCharMgr in the new 2.1 dialer.
SpecialCharMgr.smali references"##", "#", and "#*#*", "*#*#" it only seems to be like ** would show up in here as well.
When I run baksmali on my work computer - I get smali files galore. When I run it on my laptop, I really only get the images/xml files. Not one smali to be found.
So what am I doing differently on this machine than the other? Does it have to do with the version of java installed? I thought it was the latest on both machines.
Also, I can't remember back to 1.5 (all 3 months ago) was it called HtcDialer.apk there as well? I have a phone.apk, but again, can't look to see if they are really "the same" or not. If 1.5 had an HtcDialer.apk can someone post it for me, I have 3 roms and its not in the /system/app of any of them.

what are you running for op system on your laptop? I had this problem and had to install 64 bit java (i'm on windows 7 64 bit). By default, only 32 bit java installs even on a 64 bit op system. You can always test, open command prompt and type java, see what ya get.

damn you man your a genious. Java wasn't in the system path... *Faceplam* read the release notes

I had the same problem. JsChiSurf helped me find it. That guy is a genious... lol

Any clue on the 1.5 dialer? Phone apk from 1.5 has some stuff but not what I am looking for.

hmm not sure, what are ya wanting to do? Ya got my curiosity.
Can ya just rip open the 1.5 dialer and compare?

Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App

Sorry, guess you have ripped it open. is there an epst.apk or field test apk in 1.5?

Thread moved as this is not development.

What do you mean this isn't development!? I guess decompiled java byte code is just text editing? The sub forum isn't called "hero roms" its called hero development, which last I checked had to do with program code....

Trouble mounting phone on a linux computer

Hey guys. I recently installed Ubuntu on a old laptop I had. And my phone would still mount in mass storage mode for file transfer. Well Ubuntu was a little slow on my laptop so I did a fresh install of Xuvuntu to try to speed things up. When I tried to mount my phone a usb drive came up called png and would not fully mount. Any ideas on what may be causing this?
Sent from my SPH-D700
There are some issues with xubuntu. I would recommend regular ubuntu or linux mint for novice users. On those distros turn all settings down to minimum and it should run as smooth as xubuntu.
what is your system specs?
I'm trying to learn as much as I can because I want to help support linux users on here. I don't see a lot of support for linux on here.
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic!
My laptop is an ibm r40 with a pent 4 1.3ghz and 512 ram. So almost equal to my phone. I was a mac user till my logicboard died last Dec and pulled this ibm out. On a side note a usb thumb drive I had works just fine on this computer. I can't understand why it won't work with my phone. The only reason I switched from ubuntu to xubuntu was because my wife complained that the computer (facebook) was too slow... you can't argue with a 9 month preg. Woman so I tried to find a solution and came across xubuntu. I am deff a noob when it comes to linux but I really like the whole idea of the community and open source to further the project and don't want to have to go back to windows but it may be my only choice if I want preformance and my wife to be happy and my phone to mount...
Sent from my SPH-D700
Lol I understand. My wife is happy with our linux machine. She didn't like it at first, but it sounds like a driver problem for you. Xubuntu does that sometimes. I'll look into it some more.
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic!
So I decided to go back to regular ubuntu but would like to know how to turn down some settings to get the best preformance. I know this is the wrong place but I figure I can find the right people to help
Sent from my SPH-D700
I'm an avid xubuntu user and don't have any problems... but if worst came to worst I would write a little script to mount the phone manually and link it to a hotkey if you use it often. Keep this thread updated with details and I'll try to help.
What does the output of 'sudo lsusb' & 'sudo fdisk -l' say?

Ugmoe I have a question. Is there another way to install cwm besides one click script in linux? I installed a pre rooted rom and now the script doest work to install cwm. Any suggestions?
Now to OP, at the top of the screen you need to go to your system settings and find, its been awhile since I've used the ubuntu distro, its either display or performance. And set effects to none. Try that. Il get a version installed and help further.
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic!
You're over my head. I am brand new to linux. I am a quick learner but have just started at zero. I decided to just go back to ubuntu which I know works. Its a shame because I could tell that xubuntu ran faster. Maybe ill give it another shot when I get my wife her own computer just for her facebook and photos. I am real intrested in learning linux and have been for some time. I just have to find the right starting point and fit it in between work a wife a two year old and a new born next week...
Sent from my SPH-D700
What ugmoe is saying is
step 1) in the drop down menus on the desktop, look for accessories - terminal
Step 2) type in "sudo lsusb' & 'sudo fdisk -l" without the quotes
Step 3) copy what is returned from that command and paste it here please

To mxcoldhit -- thanks for the translation. As far as the one click root /CWM installation I too haven't found a single script to work. What I usually do is crack-open the 'run.sh' scripts included with the one click roots and manually enter certain commands from the scripts on the CLI (or command line interface for you linux newbies ). I've found that option to work whenever I need to get/regain root. It also helps to boost your familiarity with what is actually going on behind the scenes.... which for me is one of the reasons I made the switch to Linux so many years ago.
to abmcbride85 -- the setting that mxcoldhit was referring to is located under System --> Preferences --> Appearance --> Visual Effects --> NONE . This will turn off any signs of compiz to go easy on your graphics card (or processor if you don't have a GPU in that particular machine). I jump around between all the different desktop environments from fluxbox, xubuntu, gnome, and everything in between. I have a certain softspot for Xubuntu though... Easier to configure and use then fluxbox with a good bit of the speed as well with just enough customization options to satisfy most of my needs. Xubuntu can be quirky though for a new user, certain things just don't work as you may expect, and unless you're determined to understand/workaround/fix those things I would recommend sticking with gnome. Hunt through your startup programs under SYSTEM --> Preferences --> Startup Applications and uncheck anything you don't use -- A little guess and check might be necessary here if you're not familiar with all the applications in there.
Thank you ugmoe, I don't think about that lol. So all ill need to do is look for the commands that install cwm and run those commands to install cwm? I haven't installed the android developer kit yet. Do I need to do that before hand? I'm going to install it later down the road anyways because I want to help the linux community here.
Edit: have you ever used heimdall?
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic!
Kinda a side note but my phone only mounts under ubuntu if usb debug is on.

Just bought an Atrix.

This is my first Android phone. I've previously owned the iPhone and a BlackBerry. I've sense ditched both for this Atrix. It's about a week old now.
I was heavy into jailbreaking my iPhone and modding it to how I wanted it to be, but this Android stuff is confusing the hell out of me. I just don't get it. I need the most remedial breakdown anyone can give me. I've been searching the web for days in and out trying to find something.
People have some really great information, though! That's how I came across this site. I hope to find more answers, although my mind almost exploded when I read through this thread.
Anyway, how do you like your Atrix? Any tips on making this device my own? I still feel like I should be back with an iPhone for whatever reason. LOL. It feels I'm too late to step into the Android world. I should have jumped on with the G1.
Oh, and any remedial breakdowns of rooting is welcomed! LOL!
Check out the ginger break thread for a nice break down. (really easy)
Enable swype (long press text entry)
Inquire about freezing some of the bloat with titanium backup
Start exploring the market
Download some emulators and play classic video games from the ol childhood
podcasts if your into that thing
Flash! Go to browser settings and change plug ins to (on demand) for quicker browsing and flash at your disposal!
Wait until you get uncapped upload speeds.. Oh man are you gonna love this phone!

First you are going to need sbfs and rsdlite in case something goes wrong.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
Then you will need android sdk. Installing this takes awhile btw.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
you might also want to learn some basic adb and busybox commands.
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
then you can root your phone with that thread you posted. If I think of anything else, I will post more.

I'm still not getting this stuff. Too many acronyms, too many... other things. I don't think it's meant for me to root this phone. LOL. I need a YouTube video or something. I have no idea what these instructions mean when they're telling to extract certain things in certain places, open certain things, install apk sbf and abc. Exaggerating, of course.
It's been over 7 hours and I haven't gotten any clarity.
Moved from iphone 3gs to my first android (Atrix) also.
I gotta tell you modding jailbroken iphones is very easy and very limited compared to Android phones. Even a stock outta-the-box android phone.
It's probably something like "want even more customizations = more work" for you with an Android.
Gold luck.
Its ok, its a lot to learn all at once. Just keep reading and asking questions and you'll get a grasp real soon. android is really educational and it took me a nexus one to figure it out.
Search for ginger break thats the easiest way so far I think. (sd card mandatory btw)

I'd be interested in a non AT&T branded ROM with app side loading etc. I'd guess that 2.3 will be the next big step though and wouldn't want to exclude myself from being able to upgrade...

Man, I've noticed that! I thought I knew a hell of a lot when it came to this stuff, but this Android rooting has made me realize that I'm somewhat of a novice. It's never taken me this long to grasp some computer stuff.
I also think it's because I bought my Atrix at full retail price and I don't have insurance. (I have a dealer line with AT&T. They made me provide my own phone.) I don't want to waste that much money if I brick my phone.

I'm going to keep reading and reading because I was referred to gingerbreak before I registered here. That's actually how I got on this site. It seems solid, I just have to figure it out. Reading up on terminology has made it clear to me what an ADB is. I just don't know how to use it.
Question: When I open this ADB file in the SuperOneClick zip, it opens a command prompt, displays some words and junk, an then disappears.
What am I supposed to do with this?
(I'm currently browsing this thead. I just don't have enough posts to post there.)

That is why I like using the adb from android sdk. Never liked doing it from oneclick even when I had a captivate. If you have android sdk, you can open a command prompt and cd to adb's folder and use the commands there. You can also make a bat file to make it easier.
If you don't know how to make a bat file, use notepad and type this
@echo off
cmd /k "cd c:\program files\android\android-sdk\platform-tools"
and save it as .bat
Note if you have 64 bit windows, it will be program files (x86)

Yeah, the learning curve is a little steep. Especially if you have never worked with linux before. This helped me a lot with my first android phone. This is for the n1, but most of the info applies to all android phones.

You are probably better off finding an apk for the software you are trying to convert.
I suggest contacting the makers of the software and getting an already android compiled version.
If you are trying to convert it because you don't want to pay for it, that's not cool. Just pay the $15 for it and do it right.

Thank ill look into it.
@Camalus Sooo Yesterday I forked over $15 to buy the darn thing...and guess what? It was the exactly the same software I had got from a friend...no apks, no Android support...although IT CLEARLY STATES SUCH ON IT'S WEBPAGE...contacted them and their dumbfounded...SO IN CLOSING I DESPISE YOU CAMALUS, FOR SETTING ME MORALLY STRAIGT JK JK but this is pretty wack though.

Ubuntu successfully running on the FIRE

My FIRE:
Rooted with Burrito Root
Busybox installed
I followed the instructions from "Ubuntu Install Guide" found in the Market
This is essentially a ubuntu .img file that you place in /sdcard fire up, and VNC into
But works extremely smoothly!
There is a regular desktop version and a LXDE version, even one formatted for the Kindle Fire's 1024x600 screen
Mark
Video of it? Screen shots?
Would love to see video and screenshots if you could.
Update: I searched the guide on the market and found this. There is a video there and a few five star reviews. Is this what you are talking about mprattmd?
Thanks,

That's it, there is a paid version if you want the links to the higher resolution ones, although you can just search xda ánd find the links also.
Runs as smooth as on a ñetbook!
I will see if I can video
Well, it wont let me link my video , put youtube.com then

Ok, in order to do this, you HAVE to install the PAID version of the app, then redownload the PAID boot script and replace the old one. Also, it has fast download times.
Thanks for this. Would be happy to pay the $1.50 for the work you've put in packaging this, but using Cyanogenmod 7 I can't buy this app in the marketplace... I'm told it's not compatible, with no option to download it.The free app installs fine however. Any thoughts on this? Also, have you managed to get 11.10 working yet? Am more interested in this, with some version of Unity (2d if nothing else), than the 10.10 interface. Cheers.

Unity.... Thats just nasty
Lol. Unity isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I love it, and use it as my daily driver. It's quick, intuitive, and designed for people willing to be open to new ways of using a computr interface. After using desktop linux for sone years (multiple distros), I'm hooked.
how big is the .img file?
what with the kindle having no removable sd, i'm rather cramped on space.
Large is includes:
1.5GB download, which is 3.5GB once extracted
Lightweight image includes:
500MB download, which is 2.5GB once extracted

This rocks! It's only a shame it's VNC since hardware acceleration would prove to be a problem there I reckon. Still, would be an interesting experiment to get tuxracer on there and see how it went!
I can confirm this is working, but can you install gnome or similar?
