Hey there,
I just did a hard reset, it's something I've been meaning to do for a long time now and it gave me significant speed boosts in the system. But there's one problem that doesn't seem to have been fixed yet, the GPS never ever locates.
I'm running the HTC Legend (a little branded by Bell) with Eclair 2.1.
The only way I can get the GPS to actually find my location is to open up My Tracks and record for a bit, even then it takes a while to find me. Maps, Navigation, or Mapdroyd never finds me, even when I'm outside of my car, my house, and in the open sky. When I first got this phone, it WAS able to locate me from within my house!
What should I do? I don't think I'm forgetting anything, but if I am, please post and I will include that detail.
Thanks in advance!
Are you rooted/have you flashed new ROM?If so, what ROM?
Nope. I'm a normie, except for the fact that I still have Eclair.

Updating your phone may solve the issue. The corrupt files/settings may be overwritten.
I am not sure, but you can also verify the /etc/gps.conf file... is should look like:
NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=h**p://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=h**p://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=h**p://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
SUPL_PORT=7276
on some phones, this file could be modified
I don't have root access, but I could try looking for that and hopefully opening that, thanks!
Edit: yeah I got some stuff similar to that, nothing looked out of place, some values were customized by my carrier, but that shouldn't be the problem, right?

My Legend never had working GPS as long as I had the Bell ROM on it. Some time ago I loaded a WWE ROM (not necessarily the best choice for you) and it started working perfectly.
Ohhh! So it's a ROM! What you said there sorta brought me bad memories of the old HTC Touch Diamond and the Bell UI!
Here's further proof of the Bell ROM then, from the gps config:
NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
SUPL_HOST=supl.wireless.bell.ca
SUPL_PORT=7275
SUPL_TLS_HOST=supl.wireless.bell.ca
SUPL_TLS_CERT=/etc/SuplRootCert

Any1 hv any ideas on how to fix the problem above?
Are you using a custom ROM or the default SE one? If it's default, is it carrier branded (vodafone/t-mobile etc)? If you use a custom ROM it *could* be causing problems, default ROMS should be the place to start really, then flash custom ROMS once you're sure everything is working fine.
Have you run QuickGPS and updated the satellite info in the last 7 days? This speeds up location of satellites.
How long have you left G.Maps to find the satellites? It takes a good few minutes the first time, regardless of whether you've run QuickGPS. It's usually a bit faster locking on after the first time.
one more tip.. i found that X1's GPS is not very good when it is indoors by the windows or in places with lots of buildings...
try to really find a OPEN SPACE with clear line of sight to the enterprise spaceship

Try to run the quickGPS first...once this program find Satelites,then you can close it and run google map.
This is the way i do and it works.
Hi,
I have a strange problem I was using copilot and it was working good. After upgrading to 1.6 firmware I decided to format android and clean it from some apps.
I installed again copilot and it went well, but when I load it it says
"copilot code cannot be loaded by the system" and it doesn't load anymore.
It is very strange to me.
Any idea?

1.6 broke Copilot. You'll have to wait for copilot to come up with a fix for it.
Yeah same happened to me, 1.6 broke it :-(
Works fine here....
Are you using the latest version of copilot?
Legit version that you bought from market?
copilot works here on cyanogens latest. or at least, it's a laggy, slow, almost-as-good-as-a-standalone-gps app. i aquired mine from alternative sources, and realized it wasn't anywhere near a regular standalone gps unit. since then i've dumped it. nice interface and all, but just too much lag.
google maps is decent enough for me on the road. i mean, i can make a block if i miss a turn or whatever.
Laggy? You just gotta wait a minute after it starts up in order for the system to stabilize. Copilot is *big*, so the CPU goes nuts on initial startup when other processes get blown out of memory and such.
As for standalone GPS's.... well, my GF's tomtom wanted to send us on a retarded route, so I started up copilot and it took a beeline straight to the objective. If you ask me, its WAY WAY better.
And google maps for navigation? About as horrible as it gets. Miss a turn and you're screwed. Copilot reroutes automatically as needed. Copilot also reroutes around bad stuff (like traffic jams). Learn how to use it and its great.

Nope I have CoPilot_v8.0.0.327-kfc2.0 version.
Go buy it.
anyone got a fix for this ? One of the main reasons I went for the HERO is to have a GPS SatVan unit with it... Can anyone suggest a good free alternative ? I find the font in Google Maps too small to make it a vaible option.

The latest version of copilot works fine with all versions of android up to and including 2.1.
I am a paid customer of copilot. for that reason i can say these things. their customer support sucks.
i purchased copilot while using a CM rom in sept 09. everytime i updated my version, i would have to re-download from the market. no biggie. same thing with docs to go, my backup, and other paid apps. i understand their concerns of pirated software. well, one day i decided to try some of the other roms as well as try danger spl, etc. i installed dwang. not a bad rom. i tried to re-download my copilot app... and my troubles began.
it would fail on download each time. never even loading 1% of the app. went back to cyan. still no good. i then went through each and every version released since sept. 09 to see if that would help. nope. i even unrooted my phone! still no good. during this time i searched every FAQ on copilots mother company's site. the one relevant answer i found was that you are supposed to unregister your software before moving to another phone. i guess the other rom registered with their system as another phone. well after a complete wipe, reformatting my sdcard, new rom, etc., i couldnot unregister the program. i tried for a month solid trading respectfull comments with their support guy. respectfull until he treated me like an idiot and made a few snide remarks. anyway... i finally accepted the fact that they were in no way going to give me a copy of the apk. so, i tried a copy from a site i found. i followed the instructions they had on the site, except were they said use some pirate license, etc., i used my authentic information. a short time later, i had my program back.
so, the moral of this story is this: if your legit and need support, you will get half @$$ed support from them. if you are legit, follow the instructions provided on some of the pirate sites WITH YOUR AUTHENTIC INFORMATION and you can get your stuff back up and running. had the jerk support guy just sent me the apk after confirming that i was a paid customer, and told me how to install it, i would have had mine up and running a month earlier.
i have had better support with 1 and 2 dollar app developers than these guys. pathetic.
oh, a big kicker. i sent the guy screenshots of me trying to download the software. he had the audacity to tell me my problems were caused by me using a non oem rom and that google doesnt allow that. what a putz. after i informed him of the fact i had been on the same non oem rom when i purchased the app, the theory of open source, and the fact that my rom was developed with the same sdk that they used to develop their program, and that google fully supports developers, he never responded to me. i then informed him of the fact that i reactivated my legit program using pirates instructions.
no wonder why their ranking in the market place is going down drasticly.

i know this story time and time again, these companies/music/film/tomtom paid for it never worked. industry etc etc create these these situations then try and use screwy laws to persecute people. its not new and it is a reflection of how weak we are as a society. imo

Blah blah blah.... copilot works fine and this is NOT a copilot/alk support issue that you are talking about... it is an ANDROID MARKET issue.
Changing the ROM does NOT require you to unregister the program. It registers against your phone's IMEI, which is constant REGARDLESS of SPL/Radio/ROM/whatever.
There was one version that had some registration problems back a couple of versions, I think they revamped the registration procedure and broke it -- it was replaced fairly quickly. The latest one works again and is actually fully compatible with 2.2.
And FYI: Asking them nicely *does* yield a copy of certain older versions. They don't keep around copies of every version known -- just the "major stable" versions, like 606.

Read the ENTIRE THREAD! Don't quit just because you saw a couple of key words and ask for an answer. When the answer is there, you are just proving yourself to be EXTREMELY LAZY and/or ILLITERATE.
Hey all,
Any Copilot users here? Are you able to create any new favourite locations? The process all seems to go through properly for me but then no favourite is created, even my recent destinations doesn't update itself, it's like something isn't able to be written to. Anyone else?
I'm using OD 3.1.0
Thanks
Russ
I'm sorry to say, but if you bought copilot you have to contact the official support. If you did NOT buy it: GO AWAY - these requests are not wanted in here!

Woah there horsey, that's a big assumption! Someone needs to decrease their righteousness.
I did indeed buy it, no dodgy copies here and I have contacted support directly but sometimes knowledgeable people with faster response times can be found on here.
i have no problems saving favorits on my copilot, im using version 8.2.0.218, i dont know if this is of any help but if you run copilot without the gps on it dosent seem to save anything you do
Same version here, GPS is definitely on too. Could be an Opendesire ROM issue maybe?

try clearing the data & cache in settings/applications, see if that helps
That was the first thing I tried. Then I uninstalled and even deleted the folder from the SD Card and reinstalled from scratch downloading the maps again and everything...no luck

Thanks anyway, appreciate the input. Lets hope an OD user stumbles upon this thread
I'm going to make a suggestion here, now don't think am saying this is better than that but have you tried sygic mobile maps instead? I use it myself and it's available from the HTC store so does that say anything for it?

I had this on my Hero when I took the sim out so can't really help. I tried NDrive when my Copilot expired (even though I purchased it months ago) and didn't like it at all (the UI wasn't very polished). Good luck if you contact Copilot support, they aren't the quickest.
I had that problem, updated to version v8.2.0.251, and the problem seems sorted.
Ooh yeah just noticed a new release today, has fixed it for me too, must have been a bug.
On a loosely related note...do you still have the option to turn off the "Welcome to Copilot Live" speech greeting when you start it? Seems to have disappeared on mine or I forgot where it is
No, lost the option to turn that off, along with the annoying beep every time you select something.
Same here...I'll send a message on twitter to their support
Good Luck,
I did report these as a problem by email a couple of weeks ago, and they notified me about the update 4 days ago. At least they solved the major problem in my eyes, only two more to go.

i have version 8.2.0.368 but i can not seem to save anything from home to favorites. wherever i exit the app, they are gone
In the past few months I can not get GPS to work on any build but one.
Could you all please enlighten me as to what i am doing wrong?
thank you!
Method:
edit /system/etc/gps.conf
from europe.xxxx to us.xxx
save
reboot
double check it saved.
GPS works in:
[Everyday Builds][latest linux_on_wince_htc][PPP] CM6.1+
and
copenhagen's nightly
GPS does not work:
MDJ
clean
MDJ FroYo HD
GIPAQ MIU
Jaws-MIUI-1112
JIGNERSMIUI
I'm in the same boat.
I've tried about 6 different flavors of android and yet to get the gps to find me.
I haven't done any special edits yet, still searching for the cause though
I though it migt have something to do with WM or hardware malfunction, but i guess its not, ill try one of those builds soon and see if it works for me.
I have no problems with having used nearly half of the listed builds. Here's my gps.conf, if you want to look at it. I renamed it a txt file

Hi all,
My 'current weather' on the front page of my DHD has stopped updating to the current location, it seems to default to my 'hometown'. It does update the weather, just not to my current location.
I can't for the life of me remember how to get it to use my current location rather than the fixed location.
Help?!
thanks in advance!

Same for me as per the OP. It just stopped displaying my current location and is stuck on my work location where I spend most of my day. All was fine and working a couple of weeks ago, but now....
Only thing I can think of that has changed is that Im now running the latest LeeDroid GB rom and Kernel and stopped somtime around his 3.0.3 kernel update. (Dont have enough posts to post in the Dev threads yet) I would post there but it seems like no one else with his current ROM has this problem.
Ive done a search here and tried all the suggested "fixes", but none fix it.
I have loaded the Sence 3 lockscreen and Sence 3 MMS addon from the Kingdom thread, I wouldnt expect that they would be the cause.
Any ideas?
Dont worry, all fixed. Did a full wipe and re-flashed my rom.
