[Q] Nandroid backup before permaroot - Desire HD General

Hi
My DHD is just temproot and as it say on modaco before permroot you should have a safety net
http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-hd-desirehd-modaco-com/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
How do i create a backup of the ROM im using right now?
Also how do i use framework-res.apk from the SKins thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801928

I think that guide is referring to the need to have a copy of the relevant ruu for your device. I know I didn't do anything until this was safely stored on my hdd!
That's your safety net ... if all else fails you can then just flash the ruu and you're back to stock.

cant i just install ROM manager and backup the rom im using
can that be used as a safety net?

Yes I think so but I would always go the ruu root when restoring to stock.
I think nandroid performs a backup as part of the setup process actually, can't remember. No harm in having a backup AND the ruu though

im backing my ROM using ROM Manager and the Orange RUU is perfect for my device
Thanks for all your help.

HELP i installed ROM MANAGER i had Temproot no S OFF and i just installed CLOCkwork and clicked back up current rom, it rebooted got HTC scrren and now theres just a phone icon with a red triangle with exclamation mark.

Remove battery and reboot, what happens?

its working fine but no backup of the current ROM

Shall i just perm root?
ive got the RUU on my HDD

Sounds like you need to s-off your dhd then. I'd use the eng hboot method shown in the guide.
Wasn't sure if you could backup without, seems not.
Yeah I'd permroot also, for one extra click ;-)

should i just permroot? ive downloaded the RUU_Ace_Orange_UK_1.40.61.2_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_157531_signed.exe
on my HDD

Permrooted thanks
How do you change the framework that you get with the skins? Do I just replace it and reboot?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Haven't done anything with skins I'm afraid so can't answer that. I'm sure someone else will have dabbled and will have some advice though.

Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=766, here there are lots of threads on skins, themes etc and some include the framework walk through you need....
You need to flash your framework, but please...take a backup just in case

[Q] using backup/recovery after root

ok so i rooted my Legend, but that's it, its just a root. i still have the original recovery from HTC. i've searched around for a way to somehow get a recovery like Nandroid or AmonRA (i don't think they have support for Legend) working on my phone so i can start backing it up and using a custom rom, but no luck. any ideas?
also while i'm at it, any good Sense ROM recommendations?
HTC Legend PVT SHIP S-ON

Ok i figured out a way to get a custom recovery on there, now what i want to know is there a way to make a backup before flashing a new ROM? The rooting tutorial says there isnt, but i don't believe it since it says the same for the desire and i managed to make a back up for the desire.

Install ROM-Manager from the Market (free), hit Reboot Into Recovery and choose Nandroid from the menu.

a) Yes, there is a way to do that. Reboot into recovery mode and do Nandroid backup. If in doubt, search for "Clockwork recovery".
b) As mentioned before, you can use "ROM Manager" (free app on Market).

Will temp root work or do you have to perma root?
Do we have a guide for flashing custom ROMs yet? I see a guide on ROOT and S-OFF, but have no idea what these mean. Again, new to Android (from WM 6.5.5).
I never temprooted, did permroot immediately, but I would assume any type of root will do for TB.
You can always test it out, it's not like it's going to do any damage.
There's a billion guides outthere...every custom ROM so far I see comes with flashing instructions.
The only truly risky thing you can do is flash HBOOT with S-OFF.
For majority of your needs just rooting will do as it allows you to run programs with superuser priviledges, while flashing new HBOOT is for more advanced stuff (as it allows you to write to system partitions (S-OFF means Security OFF), and you can brick a phone very easily.
p.s.
New to Android since last week also, you just have to do some reading...it's all available on Google!

[Q] HTC legend z4root

I've managed to temporary root my HTC legend with z4root.It works.Butt z4root eats up 20mb of space.
Anyone tried this?
Thnaks in advance
???...How do You mean temporary root?
Can You now, in temp root use Titanium Backup or ROM Manager ?
I ask because I was upgrade to WWE Froyo last veak and want to try BLaY0 and AllWin ROM-s, but I do not know which steps I need to do ...
Any sugestion or guideline was more than apprechiated
Temporary root like it use to work with universal androot on Eclair. You loose root after reboot.
Visionary also works for temproot in Froyo...
Swyped from my HTC Legend
I tried temporary root on 2.2 OTA legend, no problem. it also gives the superuser access. But after reboot, the superuser access no longer works but icon still there.
When I tried permanent root, it will reboot the phone by itself, say in 30 seconds time. After reboot, nothing happen either. I try many times to do permanent root but still fail.
P/S: using z4root 1.3.0
I went the z4 thread, did a quick search, 2 people said perm root works for 2.2, 1 said it didn't.
AcAndroid said:
Thanks RyanZA,my Legend 2.2(OTA) has root with your great app Z4root 1.3.0:
install app(USB Debug)-->reboot manully-->Z4root for termporary root-->Z4root for permanant root(displays rebooting...,but i got no paitience after 20m,so i reboot the phone manully,and after rebooted,superuser app was installed,and i got root access)

Anyone else has a verdict on this?
I can make a temp root, but when i try to perm root it, it reboot and i'm not rooted (checked with root checker)
Using visionary saves a lot of space...it does the same as z4root but way faster and only requires like 3 mb.
You can not permroot the legend with either one, because the legend is one of the devices where the manufacturer added another security measurement to make rooting harder.

ok so i need to downgrade my legend and root it by the hard way ?

You can only root temporary. Yes you can use titanium backup and rom manager. With rom manager you can't install roms. If you install clockwork recovery you will be screwed since the only way to get your recovery back will be to run a RUU, then you might as well downgrade and root permanent.
Yes I also lost 20 mb of free space.

If you just wanna use apps that require root like titanium backup you're fine with temporary root.
But if you wanna install a custom rom you'll need to do it the hard way.

This is wrong, as installing clockworkmod recovery via ROM Manager on Legend will just put a fake-flash update.zip on the SD-Root.
So its like:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=698404
If you flash clockworkmod like you mean you'd need S-OFF.
S-OFF requires ROOT afaik.

When I did this I couldn't factory reset trough setting. That option disappeared... The only way to factory reset was through the boot menu.

For Legends it also means you have to be HBOOT 1.00 or less. There is no way to S-OFF HBOOT 1.01 or above.
Check alpharev.nl for more info.

Thats correct at the moment.
But I just wanted to argue that you dont loose your original Recovery just by installing CWM via RomManager, because you need Hard Root for getting S-OFF (by the way, I had it, but i had to remove it again by using RUU because I've sent my Legend to HTC)

At the time I was using temporary root and were on HBOOT 0.43, firmware 1.31(?), and was new to HTC. I installed Clockworkmod recovery and lost the option as I have mentioned before. Updated to FroYo since I thought that could bring the option back in settings but it stayed the same. Only reset through bootmenu. Oh well, could be I'm wrong in some way since I was new to HTC then...

[Q] How to backup the stock ROM?

Hi,
Could someone point me in the right direction for a tutorial/howto for backing up the ROM off mytouch 4G? I am sure the ROM file is already floating around the web, but I am actually interested in learning how to do this myself. Obviously, I am a newbie, so please be gentle!
Thanks.
Download titanium nackup from the market.

Well, the easiest way is to flash clockwork recovery and do a nandroid backup from within there.

Note, you must be rooted for this, but it is definitely best. TitaniumBackup will restore apps/setting if you can successfully boot all the way. A nandroid made via CW Recovery or on your own via ADB will let you recover from anything, as long as you can still boot to recovery. IE: bad flash, boot loop, bad ROM in general, "accidentally" deleting critical system apks and breaking your ROM, etc.
Here's the link to the stock 2.2.1 T-Mo image you can also flash to do a full factory restore: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901477
1. Root phone. (there are several threads out there on xda).
(this one is nice easy for noobs http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021)
2. Flash clockwork recovery. (again, there are threads out there on xda.)
3. Power down phone. Power + volume down. When it boots, go down to "recovery".
4. You will boot into a black with green screen clockwork page. Go to backup/restore.
5. Click backup.
6. You are done. IF you want to go back to stock, restore with that ROM and do a factory reset. You will go back to the original mytouch 4g start session (with the vidoes, setup, etc...)
Although you'd still have s=off....
Thanks for all the replies!
I managed to root the phone using the procedure described in the thread here on XDA and made the backup using clockwork (the screen with the orange text).
Again, thx!

s=off but no root

Hey guys, I'm new to rooting the mytouch 4g so I need some help. Rooting my vibrant was a piece of cake but I'm having problems with this phone. I rooted my phone using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225 . Everything went smoothly; however, I ran into a small problem. Hboot tells me that s=off but when I try to use apps that require root like titanium backup, screenshot, and rom manager, I am told that my device is not rooted. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you need to run visionary one more time.
basically that method obtains temp root so you can turn s=off. Then when you turn it off it loses root. So you need to reroot one last time so you can keep it. This has been covered many times.
I ran visionary and I have rebooted many times. Do I need to press something in visionary? What should I do?

pull the battery. that will refresh the cache. Then reinsert the battery. temp root and make sure "run visionary.sh" and "set /system to r/w" are both checked. then tap perma-root. and open the terminal emulator the type "su".

As long as it says s=off in bootloader and do permroot once booted then you should have a permanent root.
Thanks a lot guys. I really do appreciate it. That solved my problem. The guide didn't mention anything about checking those 2 options and running permaroot once s=off was enabled. I guess it was common sense but I'm a noob so I didn't think of that. Which roms do you guys recommend? I was thinking about trying out the virtuous unity sense 3.0 rom. I usually flash new rome on my vibrant through clockwork, should I use rom manager or through hboot for the my touch 4g?

Never flash a rom through rom manager. Always flash in recovery to prevent bad flashes, i don't think rom manager does a good wipe.

I'd recommend RoyalGinger3.0(A fast simplified version of CM7), Virtuous Unity if you're into Sense, or Faux123's AOSP/CM7 Rom.
