Data2ext? - Hero CDMA General

Hey guys, saw this on front page today. Seems to give a major boost to performance, any chance we could get it working on the hero, but more importantly would it actually help us?

The data to EXT looks to use ext4, I dont think Hero has that capability. Or it does but hasnt been unlocked so to speak. There is a data2sd that uses ext2, and still provides a 250% increase in I/O, if I was reading correctly. I am gonna look into this today. We need to start with Deca, the kernel needs to be able to allow a few things for it to work.

didn't we have ext4 in some of the older 2.1 roms, like DarchDroid? I wish Darch would come out of hiding

The OP was updated and it says the the mod is stable and faster on ext2
I havent tried it yet, I did chat with firerat a bit and he says it wont interfere with his Mod, and it should work. He gave me a busybox code that is supposed to do the same thing BUT when reboot the code is lost and would need to be entered again. I tried it and got no high scores on benchmark, still pulling 450.
Code:
busybox mount -o noatime,nodiratime,remount /data

Oh wow, well when I get a chance I'll try it out. I don't use firerat's mod so maybe something weird is interfering :/

Maybe should go on twitter and ask him I guess since he was so sincere about it, he probably doesn't think that hack should be used at least not for the average user I guess. I mean he said "you've been warned" lol so I think ill roll with his advice. Good luck to you all who use it.

Any form of an Apps2SD won't get you support, unless you are using the Froyo version.
I'm going to check it out. Maybe some of the ideas behind the code can be used to resolve some of Darktremor's quirks.

No, he doesn't like anything that remotely looks like his old Apps2SD code. He thinks they create the stability issues with CM. I can't vouch for that, but I have a lot of people who run Apps2SD-style code on their CM with no issues.

quick update
looks like one of the gsm devs has a working data2ext cooked into his rom.
currently it's still in the early stages so it's kinda unstable, however, looking at the quadrant scores they are pushing their phones into the low 700 range...

I think it is just not for average user issue. I went though the whole process on my Hero and made a mistake. I used a program called EASEUS to create my partitions on SD, I set them all as Logical so when I rebooted the phone saw no card to mount Had to format card, restore my data, so I could nandroid back. Then I had to.. well, lets just say it was a pain in the arse for such a dumb mistake! LOL Try again tomorrow, on a spare sdcard.

Can't you just make partitions from the recovery menu?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

I dont have that option on clockwork, I can create partition from the app, but the mod directions say to use a program called Gparted, or Fdsk. I just tried it again with a smaller sd card, class 2, and it didnt work again. Something has to give, they are doing this on the G1, N1, Desire, come on Devs lets rock this on out Hero's!!!

I might give it a shot if i have time tonight, but I'm no dev so don't expect magic has anyone bounced this idea to deca or aosp?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

ooh crap, i tried flashing amon_ra's custom recovery to make partitions.. for some reason it jacked up EVERYTHING. just spent 30 minutes getting my phone to boot/boot into recovery without freezing
edit: and spent the 30 minutes reflashing a rom and resetting everything... this better work
YET ANOTHER update: i am teh fail and am a linux noob. so i couldn't get it to work last night but managed to not brick my phone. good news is i contacted a very talented dev and he said he's already working on it

Any luck? I didnt try at all today. Gonna look into the darltremor script though, it already moves dalvik to ext/sd so it wouldnt take much more, maybe tweak that code from firerat....
EDIT.......
These scripts are popping up in flashable form now! I flashed one that may work BUT it needs 3 ext partitions. I flashed with only 1 ext and it booted but was SLOW. Gonna try later with correct partitions. I also found one were someone took the darktremor apps2sd and modified it to include data, gonna flash that now!

I flashed a modded darltremor app2sd and ran a quadrant. It flew through I/O test 1 and 2 but then hangs on database writes. So it IS close and CAN work on Hero!!!!

[Q] Dual Boot ROMs

Is there any way to partition the SD card to dual boot roms? One in the ROM of the phone, the other in a separate partition from the other junk in your SD card? I know the guys working on the CDMA hero did it, but i haven't seen anything about the epic.

Why doesn't anyonebuild a rom with rfs? I can't wait for schizopunk to get EE updated to eb13. I think he's the only dev that still supports rfs. Luckily his roms are always stable

EXT 4 is sooo much faster. it adds 400+ in quadrant on top of any rom you are using. thats if you are a numbers guy. but you will feel how much faster ext 4 does everything. the frozen rom is AMAZING 2400+ quadrant. the phone is done booting before the boot ani is done thats how much faster this phone is with those mods.

Dualbooting

Can you dualboot miui and cm7?
For what reason would you want to do that?
I'm guessing if you know how to dual-boot then try it make sure you have a kernel that's compatible with both.. otherwise no.

Because I like them both and can't decide which I want as my daily.
With the new partition map and both roms under 118 mb I don't see why we can't have 2 different roms on the internal memory.
I am trying to find a computer science summer school so I can do this myself but summer is far away so I was wondering if any of our amazing devs could do that quicker than me

I think this method still works very lenghty so read up :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=

But that requires me to boot from the sd card which is really slow.
I think this is going to be my first real project.
It doesn't seem complicated.
I tried at other projects and failed so I'm going to give this a shot and if it works I'll post it in the development section.
Yes, one would need to boot from the sd card because there is no current way to share the system and data space. Your phone would not be able to seperate one framework-res from the other...you get the idea. You can't put pot roast and spaghetti in the same pot and try to eat only pot roast.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
But if you make 2 system folders and 2 data folders and interrupt he boot path to let you choose which ones to use it might be possible. Take all that I am saying with a grain of salt but our device has done some pretty amazing things the past year and a half so let's let it live up to it's name and try every single way to make it better. I am going to start trying after I get my spring break because I'm a freshman in high school then in the summer after my classes I could probably get close or a buggy version working. I just needed to know if any other developer already did it so I wouldn't waste my time.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It sounds more like it would need 2 partitions and some controller to pick which one at boot up but feasible since computers can do it.

What do you mean by dual boot?
http://epiccm.blogspot.com/2012/01/boot-el30-stock-from-sdcard.html
The temporary EL30 boot from sdcard is a method of "dual boot" which has been useful for people to update PRL and calibrate sensors. This old version is problematic in that 3G and 4G data is broken. We know how to fix it, but it would take a few hours of work and there hasn't been demand for it.
Any type of dual boot would boot from the sdcard. The slow sdcard. Not a great user experience.
LOL...I got a quad boot on my phone. If I boot right into CWM I have nandroids of 4 ROMs to choose from to restore. Takes less than 10 minutes to restore one and then there is no issue of running from a slow sd card since we don't have enough internal memory to make real dual boot work.

Where'd all that space come from? I thought we only had like 300 megs in both RAM and ROM?
Also my friends tp2 and hd2 dual booted very easily into android (infact I think the hd2 is the most developed for android phone after the g1 and nexus 1, and its not even native lololol) and ran extremely smooth (on the hd2...on the tp2 it was like a hero with a keyboard lol. Random sluggishness.)
But nah if the hd2 can handle it I know damn well our phones can handle it. The problem is, everything we can dual boot is closed source so that's why windows phones can dual boot android but not vice-versa (I mean, you could do it yourself but just can't distribute it).
Meego seems like a great choice for a dual boot though since its open source and amazing...

Whats funny is the HTC HD2 still runs ICS or can dual boot etc... and its 3 years old
I have had my head spun by this topic myself -- I've been doing a lot of searches and reading just about every result but I can't seem to find good general info on the subject. I've seen some loosely compiled info on dual booting CM9/CM7, and I've seen some info on the EL30 from sdcard mentioned before, but I had hoped to boot CM9/CleanGB as CleanGB is what I'm running stable and comfortable with now. I'd just like to be able to have stable and comfortable as a fallback for playing with ICS. I know running off the sd is supposed to be quite slow, I don't really know what to expect as to HOW slow, but the way I figured slow was an acceptable compromise for a stable fallback.
My bottom line has been that a lot of kernels seem to support this, yet it feels like there's very little info on doing it, and that just confuses me a skosh. Is CM9/CleanGB even possible due to kernel requirements?

[A] We REALLY want a kernel built from source!

Update: 09.06.12
So yeah, um more info to come this weekend.
OG OP:
hey all long time no OP...
well im officially gonna take over my fiance's laptop to build from sources among other fun stuff.
ive been looking around and noticed it i build a asop kernel it would still only be a 2.2.2 kernel. would cm6 be something we would like to see? ive also been hitting up the devs at UWT to see if possible to make the mods to build a gb kernel to cm7 and on.
i ask these questions cause i wont be the only one using em.
just wanted to pick yall brains for a min,

I'm not too concerned about cm, unless it's 7, or higher. 6 wasn't particularly great, from what I've heard. And, if you/we can figure out how to bake the call to ticker api into it. A custom kernel, for no other purpose than over clock and custom boot animations would be awesome. That and true scripting ability, instead of having to use init.d as a backdoor. If you decide to work on it, let me know how I can help.

I'm with Tx on this. Surprisingly, I'm content with my phone right now. I would like to change my lock screen, but as far as the ROM, it's running smoothly and I don't think CM6 would be any better of an experience for me. CM7 would be nice, but I've already convinced myself our phone will never get gb so it's no big deal.
I would enjoy changing my boot animation though, so I'm all for a custom kernel! Between you and trailblazer, my phone is now what it should have been when released by Samsung and Verizon. Thanks for all the work!
Cm7 is possible. I used it on my gf (hauwei) phone (begore i400) built up from eclair. I didn't do it but it was accomplished. Buggy though. I would rather have functionality over all the fuss though. I'm still on it

How long does it usually take to build a kernel? Sounds like a great plan.
It would be great to see some updates in kernels. Being able to over or underclock or change boot animation would be fantastic. Last phone was OG droid which was easy as he'll to flash kernels, ROMs, boot animations, and over/underclock. I miss that part of it but don't miss alot of the bugs, and lack of RAM with it. This phone does run much better and am happy with it at this point.

I don't use the continuum much these days but would glady test anything and help where I can
And on a side note... I was thinking about ICS on the continuum (i have a rezound)
I was thinking if you outed the ticker completely the softkeys could take its place and the launcher would have the grey bar through... I have absolutely no idea what any of that would involve or how to go about doing it but I can dream dammit!

I'm doin it in vmware so that might be a problem too.
Ill have to find some time to partition Linux soon and try?

I think cm6 would be awesome! Yea its not cm7 but at least its something different. I know there's not alot of devs on the continuum but I think having something different than all these plain roms coming out would be nice, Not trying to sound like a hater or anything.
I'm not that great at developing or anything like that yet but if we got cm6 would that mean we'd have a greater chance at getting cm7?

i believe so too, time pending.
Vanilla Froyo
im trying to build aosp FROYO kernel/rom. starting there before i try to go up.
i see in the .config file where the ticker is and screen res. but source is huge and has stupid (not stupid) code names. ours is "garnett". yet in the menu config for kernel there are device options to build for "garnett_delta" and another i can remember off head. we are also in need of a working [initramfs], i found them once in our sources but i have already started from scratch 4 or 5 times. i had one successful compile yet no output. my next attempt will be tonight and since have gotten only a few errors that ive looked into but dont understand.
Update (patch) Kernel
from what i have read i can try and update the kernel itself to a 2.6.32.59
and have read in order to update to a 2.6.35 (GB)+ i would have to downgrade (or start?) from 2.6.32 (linux sources only go back to 2.6.32.25 or something (this option would take me awhile to just read about lol)
