I think we need a new Poll for anyone that needs to change their answer after upgrading to JK4...Perhaps give JK4 a few days to make sure it's running smoothly before voting...
(Thanks Electroz for the original Poll!)
I got to experience 5 minutes of froyo before multiple force closes and then dead. It went into a reboot loop never getting past the white i9000m logo.
Updated with Kies (latest version--no registry mod)
I was stock JH2.
No lagfix ever installed
I've never flashed any rom.
Sorry guys, Kies is not safer...
Now I have to convince Bell to honor the warranty...
I don't think there are any issues with Kies or Odin for flashing. I've flashed many times, sometimes 4 times in one day and I've never had any issues. There does seem to be the usual SD issues but I also think there is a USB communications issue. There have been many reports of data corruption while writing to internal/external SD with large files. I personally had an issue pulling large files off of internal/external SD. I think if this problem occurs while flashing new firmware it could cause some corruption that could be noticeable right away or after a bit of use. The partitioning on this device seems to be more sensitive than others and a hiccup while flashing could cause some major issues.

They don't care.
I went today and they just took it and didn't ask anything that sounds like they cared about if I am not with Bells.
I gave them my bro's phone number and info since he is with Bell, just to avoid any problems.
Just don't say something like the phone is "unlocked" lol...the phone is dead so they won't find out anyways if you don't tell them. They won't ask either.
Just tell them that you upgraded through kies and it got the problem.
it's a hardware defect, if it dies it dies
after all the evidence we've seen (all the reports by our members)
if it's good it will work regardless of what firmware you use, and regardless of the way you flash the firmware
the lag fixes and froyo just accelerates the problem and makes it more evident sooner than later
which is good in a way, it's better to find out before your warranty runs out
ok im pretty sure mine is a full brick. maybe you can tell me.
less than 24 hours after updating to 2.2 i started getting all of these errors in various programs, so i rebooted the phone, but after it plays the little intro thingy the screen just goes black and thats it. cant do anything else. i tried a factory reset and still the same thing. so is that it?
also. i bought this phone at best buy, but network unlocked it to use on rogers. should i be contacting samsung directly about a replacement/fix? anyone here done that? im REALLY scared that are gonna give me a phone that i am unable to network unlock.
thanks for any info.
some one welcome me to the club of defund Bell Internal SD

@evil-doer
I am in the exact same boat as you! I bought from Best Buy, then unlocked to use on Rogers. Last night, I updated to official Froyo through Kies, and then it just died on me today (many app force closes and then just drop dead). When I get into recovery mode, it says can't mount the SD card.
I think I will just go to a Bell Store tomorrow and see what happens. I will let you know how it goes. Please let me know how yours go too. Thanks.
Mines a goner too
Same issue, have a forced app closure, shut the phone off and it wouldn't start up anymore. Just flashes the Galaxy S GT-I9000M white logo non-stop now.
I can put it into download mode and load up 2.1 (stock) and get to the coloured Galaxy S logo, but then it just goes to a black screen. In recovery mode, it shows stuff about not being able to mount the SD on E:\. I'd assume that's the internal flash?
Luckily I haven't had it for >30 days (on Virgin Mobile) so I'm hoping I can just exchange it and be on my way. I have to call them though apparently since I bought it online.
i did not have Force Close, the phone just got really really hot during batch restore of TitaniumBackup

how did you load up 2.1? i can put my phone in download mode but nothing happens after that. and how do you get in to recovery mode?
Well I can load up 2.1 with Odin and with the auto reboot option checked, it'll go straight to recovery mode after flashing (for whatever reason). Otherwise I can't get to recovery mode.
Success so far... 12 hours after upgrade.
I sucessfully upgraded to Froyo yesterday.
I had problems with Kies at first and had to do a factory reset before the upgrade. The FileSearcherforKiesFix.exe altough it detected two bad files wasn't enough to make Kies happy.
This phone was bought in october and had the voodoo lagfix installed from the begining. I disabled the lagfix before the froyo upgrade.
My previous samsung phone; the GT-8000 (Omnia II) did have an internal SD card failure after a few months of operation... Also a Bell phone. I'm really concerned by that trend with Samsung and Bell...
I recommend NOT to upgrade. With JH2 I had NO problems. I upgraded to JK4 and about 24 hours later (this morning) I started getting force closes. XDA App. wouldn't open and just scrolling through memory management gave me haptic feedback (even though I had it disabled) and random closes. The phone became unusable fast. I tried a reboot and the phone booted to a black screen where only the buttons lit up. I went into recovery mode and I saw some dbdata error. I figured my phone was a goner. I ended up formatting the internal memory, clearing cache and then doing a factory reset. The phone is up and running now...but for how long.
Well... you're going to have upgrade eventually so best to do it now while you are under warranty in case something happens...

How's that the case?
Stock JG9 w/ OCLF -> Stock JH2 (kies, voodoo lagfix) -> JK3 (Odin, Speedmod kernel w/ tweaks flashed through odin to get 2e back, no lagfix) -> JK4 (hacked kies, speedmod kernel w/ tweaks flashed through odin to get 2e back, no lagfix)
No SD failure so far, touch wood. Original phone purchased day after launch.
Mine died today, started getting FC and then the whole thing froze. I tried restarting it but after the samsung splash screen all I had were glowing buttons.
It ran fine for about a day on JK4 before that on JH2 it never gave any problems.
BTW it was stock updated through Kies.
The guy at the Bell store told me they never get these phones returned, this was a first for him. Either it was his first day on the job or it's typical Bell BS.
Just had my second phone die. The first one died after 28 days with no upgrade. This one after 8 days, 2 days after upgrading to Froyo...
Same thing happened to me this morning.. Froyo was working fine for just over a day and then this morning I turn on my phone, get a bunch of FCs.. I reboot.. get another bunch of FCs.. reboot.. and now it won't go through the "S" splash screen. When the screen disappears I press the buttons and it just glows..
I don't know if it's bricked or what.. when I run recovery I get this error.
E: can't mount /dev/block/mmcblkOp1 (I/O Error)
E: Copy_dbdata_media:can't mount SDCARD:
your storage not prepared yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
copy default media content failed.
Is this what everyone else is getting? And what are my alternatives?
If my phone is pooched then I'll be pretty pissed since this is my 3rd SGS, I gave the SGS up when it had issues in low reception and the 850 band lock fixed it. If this totally pooches my phone I'm never buying another Samsung mobile product again.

Just done the lag fix for my Galaxy S and it all seemed to go through fine. Tried running Quandrant benchmark to test it but it crashed. I turned the phone off and on, got the Galaxy S i9000 screen then is just goes blank, literally nothing, not even the menu or back lights. Had to then take the battery out to reboot but got the same blank screen.
I can boot into recovery but rebooting from that doesn't work either, does anyone know how to fix this? don't want to try anything for fear of making it worse

Try getting into the Recovery Mode with the 3 button combo
instruction on wiki http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/GT-I9000
What lag fix are you using and what firmware are you on?
wont boot..
Hi, strangely but after the 2.2 upgrade on my SGS (it was JF5 and I made the trick with the registry to JPC and upgrade via KIES) it happened to me as well.. just a beautiful "S" blinking on the screen and nothing happens. On the time of upgrade in the instructions it was written that with the 3combo trick to make factory reset.. then everything worked just fine until yesterday...
Without installing any new apps, just browsing and trying to make my AllShare working.. I decided to gave up and without reason I have decided to restart my phone just to free RAM and etc.. And by no reason at all I got the same ****ty "S" screen and no boot.. tried first to wipe the cache.. didn't help.. and just after again factory reset it worked out and the phone is okay...
So probably for you the solution is really only factory reset, however this is very strange behavior
When I first applied the lagfix from the market in apk type it required an auto reboot to see if things wokred ok (as prompted on the screen).
Anyway, my phone stuck to a black screen and I was in a very inconvenient situation not to be able to use a PC (yeah, now I know I shouldn't mess with stuff like that while I'm on-the-go).
Long story short, after a couple of manual reboots (by taking out the battery for some seconds) it came back to life and no problems ever since. So before flashing (which can be rather incovenient if you have no backups etc) try the above mentioned method.
Original JF3 firmware (yeah need to change that).
for some reason, i can connect to kies with no problem, but when i go to upgrade the firmware to the newest JI6 official, it fails and shows the attached picture. any ideas? I need to get this update because my vibrant is acting up pretty ba and as far as I know, this is the only current fix. I dont want to use the samfirmwares.com version because I want the official version. Help!
What version of Kies are you on? I'm on 1.5.1 and I never see an update. Maybe 1.5.3 can see the update?
Just updated mine about an hour ago through kies. Worked fine.
Kies Version: 1.5.1
Prior Rom: Bionix 1.4
Kernel: Stock
im on 1.5.3 and it still wont work, i just tried it again. I tried rebooting the pone and computer and still nothing worked. it just keeps saying unable to update. when you installed kies, did you install it as the UK as your country or US?
Mine says "PC Connection only available in idle screen Close running applications" when I try to connect with Samsung Kies mode???? What am I doing wrong?
Back out of everything on the phone, make sure you are in Kies mode. Run Kies first, then connect phone.
I have yet to see on the forum where somebody went from the JI5 from Kies to JI6 either OTA or through Kies. I've tried 1.5.1 and 1.5.3.81 for Kies and neither will update my phone.
Updating through Kies right now. I had to do the regedit fix for Kies 1.5.3.
EDIT: Whew, phone isn't bricked. Just made it past the Vibrant screen.
is it possible that kies may brick the phone?
How long is the Kies update taking for you guys? I'm pretty sure I'm hung up. It made it through the downloading, and now it's about a 1/4 of the way through the upgrade bar, but hasn't moved for an hour and a half.
I am totally stock. No mods, no nothing.

that's not good. if i'm in your condition maybe i'm already sweating. maybe just wait a little more.
i tried to do this but the kies hung up when it's copying my contacts.
Well, it's not gonna do me any good to sweat. I'm over two hours now of just watching it sit there 25% done. No movement at all, computer's cpu is at 0% use. I think I have to pull the plug and then call Tmob if the phone is messed up.
Just to be clear, I was 100% stock, no root, no fixes, nothing other than apps installed from the marketplace. Here goes nothing...

what happened? me too, i unplugged my phone before anything goes wrong.
ive made the backup of my contacts, but after that it cant continue to update, it fails every time, i guess i am stuck waiting for the ota unless someone has a fix for kies
My phone now only shows an image of a mobile phone and a desktop with a caution sign in between them. The same image shows if I restart using the power button, pull the battery, shake it vigorously, etc. I do believe I am now the proud owner of a non-functioning phone. Kies will not recognize it, nor does windows recognize it when it is plugged in. Crap.
I guess I'm off to the T-mobile store to try and get a replacement.
im in same boat i have no clue what im doing wrong? im i missing steps here?
if has any idea what i need to please help.
im a bone stock
Well, I'm pretty sure that we are now lacking functioning firmware on the phone. I'm thinking a new phone is the way to go, but maybe they can do something at the store.
Anyone where the update is stuck, you will probably have a soft brick at this point. However, this does not mean your phone is broken completely, it just means you will probably have to get into Download Mode and Flash via Odin.
Have fun

that was my experience using kies too (whether 1.5.1 or 1.5.3). since then, i've used odin (v1.3) about 6 times (not a lot, i know) with all successes. don't let it scare you.
to get into download mode just do the following.
1) pull battery then put it back in so the phone is completely off
2) disconnect usb from phone (but leave it connected to pc)
3) while holding down volume up and down buttons together, insert usb cable
that should take you straight to download mode.
then load up odin (check the bible for flash instructions -- pretty simple though). what i did was flash to JFD, then flashed to JI5. worked like a charm.
honestly, kies was a nightmare to get working and once it did, it messed up. odin has been simple and painless. one note, after flashing with odin, first boot may be slow. when i flashed JI6 OTA over JI6 leaked, it took about 10 minutes, at least, to boot.
good luck!
I know it's not helping you guys: but my Kies update (newest release) was smooth sailings after I did the registry fix.
I did none of the backups suggested (I tried so many times before so they were already done this time)
Let me know if you want details about my config.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, but I did make judicious use of the search button and google before I took it back to the store. I tried every single combination of button presses for every single mode, from every single forums posts I could find. No luck at all. The T-mob guys also had no luck, and it just so happened that a Samsung rep stopped by to see how the Vibrant was being received by the public and he couldn't get any recovery mode to work either. (He had no idea about when Froyo might be out though..... just in case you were wondering) Anyhow, I'm pretty sure that I for one believe in the myth of the hardware locked Vibrants.
Hi guys
So I installed Nero v3 on my Vibrant, and all is well. I followed the steps on the Nero thread. I like it very much.
Then I decided to flash my gf's phone. It seemed to go well at first, but then some odd stuff started happening. First, I can't open the "Settings" menu - nothing happens. Second, lots of stuff force-closes all the time.
Those two are minor issues, though. Somewhere between 5-15 minutes after flashing, the entire GUI will force close. The phone will vibrate, then the Team Whisky logo will appear again (as if rebooting), and the GUI will appear and begin the regular startup procedure. It will get as far as "Preparing internal SD card" before the GUI will crash again. This cycle continues indefinitely. Once it has begun, not even pulling the battery and rebooting it will solve the problem.
Any advice?
My plan is to find a way to back up the SD card data and format it, since it always crashes on "Preparing internal SD card." However, I doubt this will help, since the other issues (constant force-closes) don't seem to have anything to do with that.

Was her phone stock before you started tinkering with it?
In any case I'd suggest re-download nerov3 (to avoid corrupted download issue), ODIN back to JFD (remove the ghosts from the past ROM's) and reflash.
Phone was stock aside from rooting for the purpose of TitaniumBackup. It has never had anything installed on it.
I'm currently Odin flashing back to stock, and I'll give it another shot.

Well, I did the Odin flash to stock, then installed Nero. After first boot, I left it untouched for 20 minutes or so, and then did a clean reboot. Upon starting up, I was once again stuck in the loop.

Did you re-download nero? It might be a corrupted download, I haven't seen anyone with the same symptoms.
Does it happen if Voodoo is disabled?
EDIT: Saw that you didn't even have a chance to enable it, hmm, try a different ROM? Axura or Eugene's work.
No, I didn't try re-downloading it. Perhaps I'll give that a try, although it is the same file I flashed onto my phone.
After a bit of time playing with Nero, though, I'm considering going back. The parts that work are slick and wonderful, but it very much feels like beta software. In particular, scrolling lists or web pages is choppy. I've heard this criticism of Android before, but I've never experienced it with the original Vibrant software. It was always so smooth. It makes me think that maybe Samsung was using GPU acceleration in some places. Also, I seem to have some problems with the touchscreen becoming unresponsive, especially in the browser if it's blocked waiting for data (another bug...).
Is it possible to run the JL5 modem on the stock image? That would be great.
Hello,
Please Help!! My stock (firmware but rooted) TMO Tab started locking up and then progressed into constant reboots, lockups and semi hard resets (I lose all screens and they are back to stock, email accounts are gone in stock client, but apps are still there and a lot of other information is still there like wifi, bluetooth setting/devices etc.) Also, sometimes, the device hangs on the Samsung logo on boot up and I have to power down holding the button for 10 seconds and then turn back on..
It is almost like I got a virus. I did a hard reset the other night, went to bed with about 80% battery and it was completely dead in the morning. Last night went to bed with 91% and it was dead in the AM. Something is wrong and draining my battery.
Tmo is not standing behind their product because I bought it without a contract and said Samsung would either refund me or send me a new one(which I knew it couldn't be right), and it wasn't. They said send it in for 10-14 days and they will send me a working model.
So given all the problems I am having which seem to be software related, which software should I install? Something I won't have problems with or will still allow me to accept future Tmo updates if needed or wanted.
Also I am upset over the email limit(one month unlike the VZ version etc) on the stock email client so a Euro version would be fine if it had that feature and I also am not using the Tmo network so a disabled 3G network for data is not a problem.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
Best,
BC
Please help me...
Update: My Tab was stuck on the Samsung logo for the longest time this morning(like 3 hours). I did the volume up/power button and wiped but still was stuck. It finally booted up but I am sure it is going to lock up and I will have to go through the same thing hoping to get it to boot up.
What could've caused it? What should I do while i have it on? Should I update to the Euro software and if so, which one? There are so many choices and not sure which one to do. Also, would I be able to go back to the stock tmobile s/w if I can return it for a replacement?
One thing that i noticed in the apps is a folder called error 1.0.0 but I cannot uninstall it. Is this normal and does anyone else have it? The other thing is that I still have the same memory available as when I had all my apps, email etc in it. Like it didn't really erase everything.
Please help and point me in the right direction. I have been scouring the net for 4 hours now and I don't know which way to go.
Thank you,
BC
Perhaps you poked around in the files system and accidently removed something? I would go to the Roto Stock firmware package thread, and flash that to repair a corrupt file system. Only a guess on my part, but it won't do any harm.
Well I suppose but I don't recall messing around with anything. I was hoping that while I had to change or repair my software, I should put the best on that there is to offer.
What software do you use or recommend?
Thanks for the reply! This is driving me crazy! I have had to turn off and back on at least 15 times today trying to get it to work amd habe wiped like 5 times.
Do you think I should just try and get a replacement from tmobile?
Thanks,
Brian
Woah, slow down partner. Make a Titanium Backup to the external sd card then remove it. Flash Rotohammers stock T Mobile firmware. Reroot with SuperOneCLick. Reinsert the external SD and reinstate your apps with Titanium. If things are still wonky after that then it's probably a hardware problem.
EDIT: I'd flash using Odin 1.7. It's just easier than Heimdall to me. Personal preference I suppose.

I did the backup and reinstalled after one of the wipes but it keeps locking up and not booting up. I haven't had it on 1 time successfully yet today and it past 10PM...
The main reason I would like a different firmware is because I want the full functionality of the email client like in some of the other tabs and android devices.
Tmobile and i don't know who else (I read ATT) crippled the email and it doesn't have the option to have all email on the device which is great for short trips without the laptop.
What about some of Roto's other firmwares? Like i said previously, I am not using Tmobiles data or service so it doesn't matter. I also read that the browser and overall was really smooth.
Is it ok to root with z4root? I have the app on my sd card and that is how i've done it before.
Thanks for your suggestions and i appreciate all feedback. I have to do something because this device has become a paperweight.
Thank you,
BC

hey dude you sound nervous as hell man, relax. as long as you can get your phone in to download mode. you will be ok. flash rotos tmobile stock firmware. if it works hooray! if not flash rotos jme 4
Still out of commission
I am not nervous, just annoyed as hell.
I flashed the stock tmobile firmware, booted it up and it crashed after about 10 minutes and I am back stuck on the samsung logo. I haven't been able to get it to boot up for about 5-6 days. I have wiped many times and no dice.
Should I wipe cache partition? Try the JME software?
Thanks for your help!

Hi There thismorning I flashed my i5800 that I purchased from Carphone Warehouse with the I5800XWJPF 2.2 firmware from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063940 using ODIN.
The first time I tried it all seemed to be successful, and I then proceeded to root it with SuperOneClick and began restoring my phone using titanium. Then halfway through it crashed, and with no input from me my phone rebooted. It then got stuck on the I5800 boot screen. I finally managed to get it to work be re-flashing the JPF firmware. I Then factory reset the phone (forgot to last time). Now I have finally managed to restore to my phone to how it was.. ish.
When I reboot the phone it take forever to run the Media Scanner and no widgets other that the Google search load up. Also icons are missing. Aswell as thos issues the phone runs slower than it did, and crashes often. I have fired up angry birds and it was just a juttering mess. Based on all this I decided to revert back to 2.1.. and oh oh.. can't find my firmware.
My initial firmwares were:
PDA: I5800XXJG7
Phone: I5800XXJG3
CSC:I5800XXJG5
It was rooted using z4 root and had live wallpapers enabled.
Help!
What can i do to fix this?

Okay, it seems to have now settled down after several reboots, but it seems to loose around 30% of the home screen icons upon reboot. Is this normal? And does it happen on the JPM firmware that was suggested above?

No it is not normal. Do a factory reset, flash any 2.1 rom from www.samfirmware.com and then JPM.
Peace...

I've got XWJPF and no problems. It runs very smooth. Something else is wrong.
Try flashing it to the earliest stock version of 2.1 that works, do a factory reset, then using Samsung kies, update it to the latest version available on there. Then try and reflash your choice of 2.2 rom. I had similar trouble with mine when I first started. I would recommend flashing CWM recovery as well, the samsung recovery is crap. XXJPQ seems to be available now and is getting some good reviews, fast and stable like JPF, but more up to date. Also try using SuperOneClick to root, has the best results to my knowledge. Some roms take a while to load all the app icons on boot, depending on the amount of apps you have it can sometimes take a little bit. I've found letting the phone go idle for a minute can get rid of the loadup lag. The ram gets topped out easily on the G3 if you have lots of apps that load at startup, which will severely slow the phone down.
Hope this helps!
More Problems
Okay, Now after a few restarts and crossing my fingers the icon thing has started to work, aswell as everything else clearing up. But now the app sizes are very small according to application manager, (angry birds - 2.2mb) and many third party apps reading 0bytes. Another thing is that Bluetooth refuses to work. It vibrates once when enabled, then another 3 times in quick succession and then the force close dialog appears. After clicking force close the box disappears and the phone responds again. I then manage to pai with a device but when I went to send a file, the dialog box and the vibrates appeared again and it refused to send. Any ways to fix?

Factory reset->reflash->factory reset.
Keep back ups!
All that you say is abnormal.
About your disappearing icons:
Are you using the (stock) TouchWiz launcher? If so, that has a (known) bug on 2.2 that all links to apps which were moved to sd card disappear if you unmount the card (which includes reboot). Are the apps that disappear on the sd card?
Reflash
Okay, to start with I will try the factory reset, flash, factory reset that was suggested. And by the way the disappearing apps were not on the sd card... Strange.. If this failds i will do as suggested by flashing to the earliest version, the update via Kies. I was trying to avoid this because of internet allowance..
Thanks for all the replies by the way

Rooting and restoring.. will post results in a few minutes time!
I'm halfway through restoring my settings via Titanium, and I keep getting the single vibrate, roughly 10 second delay, than a very fast triple vibrate, exactly the same as it did just before bluetooth crashed... Is something else wrong?
Okay, I've restored rooted and reflashed it and... ... still the same..
Titanium
Is it possible that this is caused by me restoring my phone settings from 2.1 to 2.2 through titanium?
If you need the original firmware to return it to stock pm me and ill upload it somewhere for you
I have just sent a bluetooth file! After another flash and wipe.. but havent restored or rooted. Don't think I will bother really. I now have a working phone! Thank you!
You must restore only apps. Restoring system configurations and apps data will cause problems. If I'm wrong correct me.
