Hello all,
I am completely new to this android stuff. I bought unlocked bell vibrant today which had froyo(2.2) already on it - I am using Fido on it. Also I think the device is rooted ( as i was able to install and run application which needed root access -shootme). However, as official 2.2 is released today, I want to install it.
I installed Kies and tried to upgrade. However, its saying that there is no upgrade for the current version. Is this because i already have 2.2? If so, what is the workaround it? I'm a complete newbie to this android stuff and want the official 2.2 release for future warranty purposes. Please help me!! I'll really appreciate it.. Thanks!
You'll have to Odin back to the last official firmware version.
Really appreciate your response.
do you know where I can find the official Bell 2.1 Eclair ROM? I've tried to search it but couldn't locate.
Also, I know restoring and playing around with ROMs is risky, but how risky is it? I read that many people broke their vibrant doing an upgrade. I certainly don't want to be in that position.
Having read other information about KIES..will KIES registry hack work? I see my device in KIES but it says that this version cannot be upgraded.
Thanks a lot for your help!
Is kies installed a 64 bit os or 32? Apparently Samsung kies is only compatible with 32 bit. That's what level 3 tech support told me today via Samsung kies

No, the Vibrant is almost unbrickable. You have nothing to worry about. Just use Odin and search harder for the 2.1 rom

Hi all
I have the XXJPK Froyo installed (it was like this when i bought it from a second hand shop) and i wondered how i will upgrate to stock 2.2 when it comes out?
Will kies recognise a newer FW and let me update through that or will i have to do some fancy flashing with Odin?
I would much rather do it with Kies...
How could we know ?
I'll do it with odin because I want a clean install

i believe kies will recongize your firmware and upgrade it to official froyo if you're running an official rom in the first place. jm1 or something. if i want an upgrade through kies i'd flash back to stock firmware.
but i hate that piece of **** software so i'm gonna odin mine
yes via Kies is the official method
similar to the Blackberry and Blackberry desktop software
"When froyo comes out, how will i get it?"
With open arms?
U will get it in a cup along side a fork

Froyo Update
My Intercept updated to Android Froyo 2.2 this morning!
Guys, there's a ton of talk that the Froyo update bricked half the phones that did it. Happened to my sister's phone this morning. It installs, then gives you the triangle with the exclamation mark. When you reboot, it freezes after the Samsung animation.
No problems here....wife's intercept.......good to go.....noticeably faster...home and back button work fine now. Good stuff

My sister updated hers this morning....nothing like a full upgrade OTA!!! looks great, went smoothly BTW, just so there's no confusion, updating formats your internal storage....back up all your data first!!! You'll lose messages, apps, games, contacts, settings, etc.
Update was pushed to me, I tried it it failed because I have inxane's custom recovery installing so I need to find a download of the rom or wait for ubuntdroid to come up with a 2.2 release

Here you go. Not sure if it's 2.1 or 2.2, either way I'm using it unbrick my sister's because the OTA has a 50/50 chance of working. Also the stock kernel is here:

Wife's phone updated fine to froyo this morning! Working a lot better!!

Bricked my wife's phone this morning. Took it into the store and they replaced the phone. Updated the new phone without a problem. Phone is way better than it was before IMHO.
Got it this morning, installed cleanly. Spent all day trying to root it. Tried SuperOneClick, Z4, and Rage Against the Cage. Anyone successfully root the Sprint Intercept on 2.1? Thanks.

Z4 won't root for me on 2.2 either
I had tried Universal Androot as well. I haven't heard to many people talking about finding a root that work. YouTube hasn't been much help either.
see here for rooting 2.2

Thanks, I finally got SuperOneClick to work with Froyo.
I managed to unbrick my sister's Intercept and then upgrade it to 2.2. Super easy and no rooting required.
Samsung really has to get their act together. Did you guys see this?

Ironically people complain about Samsung being slow to update their phones but I wouldn't want them to release a version that bricks the phone instead.

They have done exactly that, though almost half the intercepts updated have bricked during the process lol
Is the 2.2 update only for Intercepts on Sprints service, or does it include those under VM as well?
The plot thickens...
I have issues with updating through kies
see here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877864&page=51
I call samsung to try and sort the issue.
KIES tells me i can update my firmware, despite me being already on 2.2
The manager tells me that the firmware update showing available on KIES is a glitch..
He denies that 2.2.1 exists and says there will be no further update until 2.3 next year!
He advises me to download advanced task killer as that we sort my problem out???? er, dont think so!
If that's the advice you're getting then he probably doesn't know about 2.2.1 anyway.
For the record, Kies doesn't show me an update (XEU on JPX).

Sounds like he has no idea what he is talking about.
They already confirmed with other users via mail that official froyo update would be in december..
It being on kies is not a glitch otherwise they would have removed it.. Sooo stoopid.. Lol

Can't find the thread.. but there was an email from samsung saying that they will release the sources tomorrow, JPY or JPX don't remember, but for sure it was 2.2.1
..And he claimed to be the team leader!
He also said that if i managed to download the "glitched" firmware i would do serious damage to my phone and it would be my fault!
Ialready have 2.2 and presume the firmaware is 2.2.1 but even with reg hack i cant get passed the "battery charge" message so cant update...
He said advanced task killer would resolve all my issues!
Samsung also denied the Nexus S existed
Just to let you know I updated to JPY this morning from Darky's custom rom using Kies patcher......going back to the custom rom!!
Also my wifes SGS stock 2.1 JF3 never been rooted or modded in anyway, is showing the update available too, going to flash that tonight!
JPU, JPX & JPY are all test firmwares, so the manager is technically correct, that you risk breaking your phone by trying them (not that they will break your phone, but equally they are not supported roms). They haven't been signed off yet as official releases. JPZ is waiting in the wings too, and we are told that JPY sources will be released tomorrow.
Whether that means JPY comes officially tomorrow I don't know?
Also Samsung have elsewhere said the next official release comes in December, without confirming whether it was 2.2.1 or 2.3
I think we all know it is most likely to be 2.2.1 now since all these test firmwares confirm they are gearing up for an official release.
Glad to great we are likely to get 2.3 officially too next year.... although the source doesn't appear too reliable!
I don't care it's official or not. Finally it works. 2.2.1 is the first _working_ ROM from f.cking Samsung. Not a laggy piece of ****.
So I will happy with an "official" release but now I'm using JPY beacuse I would like to use my phone. I bought my SGs in september. Now it's december and this is the first time when I can use my phone without any tweak or custom ROM. It's a shame on Samsung but it looks like it's changing now.

Amen to that! I think Samsung realeased galaxy too soon because they have so consern that they have a iPhone "killer" but they failed big time and now they have pissed of costumers that have a laggy phone and we are some sort of beta testers of this crap phone, just like Nokia had make too..realeased phone too early. But its seems with 2.2.1 rom we start from cratch and the phone feels like a new phone! at last!

Just got a text from bell telling me I could update my phone through Samsung Kies. I'm running Darky's Stable 9.5 right now, do I have to flash stock rom before going for gingerbread?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
most likely unless you use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959806 to trick kies into thinking you got a stock one for your refion etc.
I just got this message too, but i highly doubt its gingerbread. Anyone actually find out what the update is?
I got the same message. Can anyone confirm that it is for Gingerbread?

Same....
Need some confirmation.
I just received the same text from Bell.
There is a new version of keis to install. Once installed it's showing I have the latest firmware at KC1.
Not sure what this is all about. Hopefully a prelude to gingerbread.
same here , hoping someone here can post what this does for them , im not on stock and not really wanting to find out the hard way what it is.
bell.ca/galaxyupdate
So from reading the information, there is no word on exactly what is being upgraded other than software. From speculation, wouldn't that mean it has to be 2.3 at least.
I just got the same text message so I plugged into Kies. It says this is the latest firmware. I upgraded my Kies last night and I am still on stock firmware (KC1). So the wait continues I guess.
I called Samsung support and was told that they were being flooded by calls over this today and that the notification was for the KC1 update. I've been running KC1 for about a month now... Bell Mobilty Canada slack much?

Are you serious?! That makes me so sad.
*sigh*
What a letdown...
Either way, thanks for the confirmation. Now we all know the reason the text was sent out from Bell. Our only hope now is that they (Bell) is trying to push everyone to update their phones to the latest firmware in preparation for Gingerbread.
KC1 compared to JL2?
Need some advice here. I'm still on JL2 (rooted). Thinking about upgrading to KC1, but I hear that doing so wipes out the root, and it's very difficult to root it again on 2.2.1. I also read that some people find the GPS performance went down with KC1.
So what are the actual advantages of upgrading to KC1? Or am I better off just holding out for Gingerbread?

You're misinformed. Rooting 2.2.1 is just as easy as 2.2. But it doesn't matter because KC1 is still 2.2, not 2.2.1.
KC1 any good?
So what are the advantages of KC1 over JL2?
Can I still apply oneclickroot on KC1 to root it?

Honestly, if you are 100% happy with JL2 I don't think KC1 would be worth upgrading to. Wait for Gingerbread or flash JVK/JVB yourself. I believe there are some fixes in regards to how roaming is handled but there's nothing you would actually notice.
The new update is just a modem upgrade that gives support for using this device overseas. It does wipe out root but superoneclick 1.9.1 reroots it easily.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
i assumed it was for KC1 since i never got any notice from them when it first came out. The KC1 modem apparently uses a fair bit more battery and it supposed to improve using your phone in the US.
JS8 with the JL2 modem has been the best to me so far.
If this is the case I won't bother to update to KC1, JL2 works just fine with my rooted ROM .
Does anyone know if Bell is even testing Gingerbread?

Take a bow from me for you must be a very unique person indeed, especially in these times when most people are itching to port ICS even before the official launch!!
Hopefully you have Kies installed in your PC in which case, all you have to do is connect your phone to your PC,start Kies and you will be told about the update that is available which is going to be some version of Gingerbread depending upon where you live.
As for Froyo, you can download any Froyo package from 'Ramad's' posts that you will find with minimum search in these forums and then flash through Odin. You will also find elaborate tutorials that will give you a wealth of information.
You are a modern day Rip Van Winkle surely!
You might want to consider froyo 2.2.1 ZSJPK as that is the most stable of the Froyos.
