I have issues with updating through kies
see here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877864&page=51
I call samsung to try and sort the issue.
KIES tells me i can update my firmware, despite me being already on 2.2
The manager tells me that the firmware update showing available on KIES is a glitch..
He denies that 2.2.1 exists and says there will be no further update until 2.3 next year!
He advises me to download advanced task killer as that we sort my problem out???? er, dont think so!
If that's the advice you're getting then he probably doesn't know about 2.2.1 anyway.
For the record, Kies doesn't show me an update (XEU on JPX).

Sounds like he has no idea what he is talking about.
They already confirmed with other users via mail that official froyo update would be in december..
It being on kies is not a glitch otherwise they would have removed it.. Sooo stoopid.. Lol

Can't find the thread.. but there was an email from samsung saying that they will release the sources tomorrow, JPY or JPX don't remember, but for sure it was 2.2.1
..And he claimed to be the team leader!
He also said that if i managed to download the "glitched" firmware i would do serious damage to my phone and it would be my fault!
Ialready have 2.2 and presume the firmaware is 2.2.1 but even with reg hack i cant get passed the "battery charge" message so cant update...
He said advanced task killer would resolve all my issues!
Samsung also denied the Nexus S existed
Just to let you know I updated to JPY this morning from Darky's custom rom using Kies patcher......going back to the custom rom!!
Also my wifes SGS stock 2.1 JF3 never been rooted or modded in anyway, is showing the update available too, going to flash that tonight!
JPU, JPX & JPY are all test firmwares, so the manager is technically correct, that you risk breaking your phone by trying them (not that they will break your phone, but equally they are not supported roms). They haven't been signed off yet as official releases. JPZ is waiting in the wings too, and we are told that JPY sources will be released tomorrow.
Whether that means JPY comes officially tomorrow I don't know?
Also Samsung have elsewhere said the next official release comes in December, without confirming whether it was 2.2.1 or 2.3
I think we all know it is most likely to be 2.2.1 now since all these test firmwares confirm they are gearing up for an official release.
Glad to great we are likely to get 2.3 officially too next year.... although the source doesn't appear too reliable!
I don't care it's official or not. Finally it works. 2.2.1 is the first _working_ ROM from f.cking Samsung. Not a laggy piece of ****.
So I will happy with an "official" release but now I'm using JPY beacuse I would like to use my phone. I bought my SGs in september. Now it's december and this is the first time when I can use my phone without any tweak or custom ROM. It's a shame on Samsung but it looks like it's changing now.

Amen to that! I think Samsung realeased galaxy too soon because they have so consern that they have a iPhone "killer" but they failed big time and now they have pissed of costumers that have a laggy phone and we are some sort of beta testers of this crap phone, just like Nokia had make too..realeased phone too early. But its seems with 2.2.1 rom we start from cratch and the phone feels like a new phone! at last!

New Android 2.2 Software Update for Nexus One phones
Starting today, Nexus One users will begin to receive the Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo) over-the-air software update on their phones. This update provides some great new features including support for making your handset a portable hotspot and support for Adobe Flash within the browser. For a complete list of everything we’ve included in Android 2.2, please see the Android 2.2 Platform Highlights.
In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone's notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones - and most users will receive the notification by the end of the week . We hope you enjoy these new features.

Just got the OTA this morning when I woke up. I was on FRF83, the new update was 507kb and brought my NExus One to FRF85B.
Very cool. Not all that exciting, more of a relief than anything. Clearly something fishy was up as the last few builds didn't seem to have any issues anyway...oh well glad its over. Now wheres gingerbread dammit!?!?!

Great news.
I am curious, don't the at&t phones get a version with a different build number than T-mobile phones? I was reading that at&t guys were getting this same update build as well.
Nope, same build for both, so no more update fragmentation.
I suspect the Euro ones wil get a different build, just for different localisation options.

If i have the stock 2.1 update 1 rom, which is rooted, has kmobs kernel and amon ra recovery, I suppose I wont get an OTA right?
How would I go about updating when someone creates an update.zip? Do i have to wipe anything?
I'm currently running Froyo build FRF50. I can't seem to see the update OTA from systems update. FYI, I'm currently traveling in Vietnam. If I download the .zip recovery of FRF85, will it work?
google wont push the update to every phone at once, it will be a gradual update through all the phones, so you wont see it in system updates until your phone is selected to recieve it.
Got my OTA update a couple of hours ago. On T-Mobile in UK. Update from FRF83 to FRF85B.

You can manually update FRF50 to FRF83, then FRF83 to FRF85B. Or just wait for OTA.
I have build number ERE27. Will I still get the update?
Yes of course you will.
excellent news. waiting for a FRF85B ROM or a FRF83->FRF85B patcher now...

Hmmm , just downloaded it. uses JPY modem and it comes with some weird file : Aries_I-P-SBL.tar. Also , bootloader update must be checked according to release notes.
Which Build Date does it have?
JPY Modem seems to be weird. Why should Samsung release "old" 2.2 Froyo Versions. IMO this is wasted effort, isn't it?
That's the bootloader that repaired 3 button recovery for some devices.

In the title he says XWJPI.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10128156
yup like baron says. he posted it during holidays. too bad nobody bothered to make custom rom out of it, instead clinging to jpy just cause its 2.2.1 and thats sad.
they think they're getting 1400 in quadrant because of it, not realizing that quadrant in jpy just skips writing to file system therefore giving artificially high score for this.
A little confused...is JPI newer or older than JPY?
JPY is an official release, JPI is not...
Can you back you your claim about inaccurate Quadrant in JPY?
If JPI is supposedly better, why does it have a letter code way before JPY?
Hopefully someone can clarify I've been happy with JPY based ROMs myself but I'm always looking for the newest/best
yes jpi 2.2 is newer build than jpy 2.2.1
never claimed this is better rom as i havent tried it. just expressed that its too bad that everyone jumped to jpy bandwagon disregarding other 2.2 roms that might be better. i can certainly claim that jl2 is better and smoother and less ram hungry than jpy cept for the dreaded network location bug.
proof of jpy skipping system data write test?? no. but when i see quadrant taking split second to do the test even on roms that end up with higher score and compare it to jpy that just flicker it faster than eye can see something is off. also cant restore adw settings or ireader settings with jpy something tells me something is screwed with dbdata.
Build date : 2010-12-11...
What is build date for JPY? Thought it was towards the end of December.
For me JL2 was buggy as hell and pretty slow. Plus the new 2.2.1 kernel is way better than any regular 2.2 as far as I know.
I'd like to see some more 2.2.1 ROMs come out from Samsung. More than that I'd like to see some Gingerbread
Just got a text from bell telling me I could update my phone through Samsung Kies. I'm running Darky's Stable 9.5 right now, do I have to flash stock rom before going for gingerbread?

most likely unless you use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959806 to trick kies into thinking you got a stock one for your refion etc.
I just got this message too, but i highly doubt its gingerbread. Anyone actually find out what the update is?
I got the same message. Can anyone confirm that it is for Gingerbread?
Hehe, is anyone left using a stock rom? Lol

Same....
Need some confirmation.
I just received the same text from Bell.
There is a new version of keis to install. Once installed it's showing I have the latest firmware at KC1.
Not sure what this is all about. Hopefully a prelude to gingerbread.
same here , hoping someone here can post what this does for them , im not on stock and not really wanting to find out the hard way what it is.
bell.ca/galaxyupdate
So from reading the information, there is no word on exactly what is being upgraded other than software. From speculation, wouldn't that mean it has to be 2.3 at least.
I just got the same text message so I plugged into Kies. It says this is the latest firmware. I upgraded my Kies last night and I am still on stock firmware (KC1). So the wait continues I guess.
I called Samsung support and was told that they were being flooded by calls over this today and that the notification was for the KC1 update. I've been running KC1 for about a month now... Bell Mobilty Canada slack much?

*sigh*
What a letdown...
Either way, thanks for the confirmation. Now we all know the reason the text was sent out from Bell. Our only hope now is that they (Bell) is trying to push everyone to update their phones to the latest firmware in preparation for Gingerbread.
KC1 compared to JL2?
Need some advice here. I'm still on JL2 (rooted). Thinking about upgrading to KC1, but I hear that doing so wipes out the root, and it's very difficult to root it again on 2.2.1. I also read that some people find the GPS performance went down with KC1.
So what are the actual advantages of upgrading to KC1? Or am I better off just holding out for Gingerbread?

You're misinformed. Rooting 2.2.1 is just as easy as 2.2. But it doesn't matter because KC1 is still 2.2, not 2.2.1.
KC1 any good?
So what are the advantages of KC1 over JL2?
Can I still apply oneclickroot on KC1 to root it?

Honestly, if you are 100% happy with JL2 I don't think KC1 would be worth upgrading to. Wait for Gingerbread or flash JVK/JVB yourself. I believe there are some fixes in regards to how roaming is handled but there's nothing you would actually notice.
The new update is just a modem upgrade that gives support for using this device overseas. It does wipe out root but superoneclick 1.9.1 reroots it easily.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
i assumed it was for KC1 since i never got any notice from them when it first came out. The KC1 modem apparently uses a fair bit more battery and it supposed to improve using your phone in the US.
JS8 with the JL2 modem has been the best to me so far.
If this is the case I won't bother to update to KC1, JL2 works just fine with my rooted ROM .
Does anyone know if Bell is even testing Gingerbread?

Stick with JPY if she wants to use Skype, there's a thread on here about the Gingerbread battery drain and Skype was mentioned as one of the possible culprits (just by having it installed). Not sure it's been proven but if Skype's a must have for her then it would be worth looking into before upgrading. Had a quick look for the thread but couldn't find it, haven't time to look properly. I'm on Gingerbread and I like it but I had JPY with the voodoo speedmod kernel and loved it. If she's not into modding the phone stick with JPY and voodoo.

Having decided I'll stick with 2.3.3 for the time being since I don't feel the need to risk ruining my warranty with the leaked 2.3.4 version, does anyone have any info on a possible timescale for the official version of 2.3.4 to be released? Also, on the right hand side of the wikipedia entry for android, it say:
Latest stable release
Phones:
2.3.4 (Gingerbread) / 24 February 2011; 4 months ago[3]
suggesting it's official and has been since february? I thought it was only leaked in the last couple of weeks. I'm presumably misunderstanding something somewhere, lol
The 2.3.4 leaked update does reduce the Android OS a bit but in general not really solve the problem.
I would flash a custom ROM, you can always go back to stock and unroot if your really worried about risking your warranty.

Well, even if 2.3.4 becomes official sometime in the next month or so, that's not too long a wait for me. So Nexus gets priority, ok. And then they'll presumably make it an update for the SGS2 as well?
What about that wikipedia entry, they must have made an error with the last digit of 2.3.4.

i don't think you understood what he said: nexus already got the update, hence the february date. our phone runs a customised version (touchwiz launcher + custom samsung stuff) so we have to wait until samsung is ready to roll out their version of 2.3.4.
