What's this?
http://phandroid.com/2010/12/09/nexus-one-for-vodafone-receiving-android-2-2-1-update/
I thought that Nexus phone will ALWAYS get update directly from Google?
So, if you buy from T-Mobile, there is a chance you need to wait from T-Mobile as well?
I don't get it.
NOTE: Before people shouting that this should be put specifically to the Nexus One forum. I think this is still valid information for us, who will buy Nexus S just because of the Google experience, like the old Nexus One. Hoping to get first update directly from Google when Google releases any new update. Apparently, that might NOT be the case! Well, hope NOT *finger crossed* ...
I cant speak for the rest of the world but US customers always get their updates directly from Google.
I have a Nexus One right now and have gotten 3 over the air updates directly from Google.

you can always root the phone and load the stock built from google. But being an android enthusiast i rarely do OTA as you lose root and have to wait, i rather wait for devs to build new roms or optimize the official roms.
Regardless if the Update is pushed from Google or pushed from Samsung it will be the First phone to get it, quite possible along with the N1 so what does it matter?

I didn't say they couldn't. I prefer Google handles them because I am still sitting here with a Fascinate running 2.1
Vodafone had a different build of Android for the phones they directly sold, I believe. No massive changes, but the update process is in their hands for their N1s

haha I just noticed. Well I hope Google will be putting out the Nexus S updates and not Samsung
Wonder if whatever it does get will be OTA, or via Kies like the GS?
Geez ... This is still a valid question for this Nexus S.
Why?
Because there will be a lot of people using "Pure Google" experience reasoning to decide whether to buy Nexus S or not.
Like me, one of the thing that I like with Nexus S is the direct update from Google.
Then I found that is NOT ALWAYS the case! That Nexus One from Vodafone for example.
So, I asked to this forum, probably someone in the know ...
Probably with this, people will know in the future if their Nexus S must wait Vodafone or T-Mobile or God knows who
See? Happy now?

In the UK, the CarPhoneWarehouse sells unbranded phones and just couples them with with a SIM from whatever provider you've picked, so they shouldn't be subject to carrier interference.

What reason can you POSSIBLY think of that an update would be only for Verizon, when Verizon's N1 hasn't been released or even announced yet, and the N1 that has been on the market for 4 months already won't get the update??
Seriously, I would absolutely LOVE to hear what the thought process is behind this question.
Try howardforums.com

It definately won't be for Verizon's Nexus One, cause it seems they won't have one. Google Phone store is directing customers to Verizon's site to buy the incredible.
My sense (no pun intended) is that when Google is ready to realse its next software update, it will hit each and every N1 over the span of a few days.
I do not feel that Google would relaase an update for one carrier/device and then hold back the release from another carrier/device.

According to Android Central, Google is going to shutdown their Nexus One forums on November 1st, making them Read Only.
Semi-true.
Whilst there is an announcement to that effect, it also tells you where to post afterwards. Basically they're moving them to another section.
Not that they're really N1 specific anyway, there's no mention of N1 in their title anywhere.

I was just wondering that myself....a strange time to do this with Gingerbread right around the corner. Then again it's still the development phone...although even that could change at any time I suppose...no guarantees in life. Doesn't matter to me tho: CM will take care of our Gingerbread needs.
There it goes the "HTC Magic afair" again...
I´s normal that they get better hardware in which develop new features for their OS...
But dismantleying the Nexus crap is against our understanding and negatively impacts on the trust we got in the Google Phone
I was a little bit scared as well when I initially read this, but then I also came to the same realization as MuckenMire; "Why should I be scared?" My N1 is rooted, and as long as people love the N1, there will be plenty of dev's out there to give the latest and greatest and even better than greatest ROM's. Sure, at some point, the phone's hardware will cease to meet the minimum requirements of the then current high performance version of Android, but I hope and am pretty confident that there will be a new phone that is just as easy to mod as the N1 by then.

There is a good reason to wait.
Now when the SDK is out all the developers can test their apps against the Gingerbread and fix all the bugs and incompatibilities.
What do you think would happen, if goog realeases their 2.3 update and some popular apps don't work anymore? This forum would literally explode with screams like "fix this immediately or else", "I hate google", "gingerbread killed my cat" and so on. Why google would do that to themselves?

I'm sure he's doing both just in case one yields different results. Supposedly I've heard that the Settings Updater doesn't always check, but caches the answer for an allotted time. Doing a "checkin" actually goes out and pings google (or wherever) and comes back with a result after a few seconds. The Settings app just flat out tells you no.

No there isn't. That section doesn't 'check' for updates, it tells you the result of the last system check for updates, which is done automatically, or forced through the dialer.
Going to that part of the settings does not force a check.

True, but its not like they would lose any buyers anyway.
The N1 is only sold as a dev phone. And how many ppl have a N1? compared to SGS or others...
Also, like when they released froyo...many apps didnt work with 2.2 and had to be updated.
There are alot of devs out there with a N1 as a devphone. Giving out 2.3 before the NS release thus giving time for the devs to update their apps before launch would give android better publicity. And happier customers
I dont know if this is an issue with 2.3 though...
(I know the SDK is out)
I was referring to 1 day vs 1 week or more. More seems more appropriate, as you all say.
The only place I'll be "checkin" with is the Development section chef's.

In the Q&A, someone from SFR clarifies that the update has been delayed and they don't have an ETA yet. That's all it means. We didn't have an ETA before, so in effect nothing has changed.
This French site is making it up as they go along. They are talking out of their rear end.
I'm happy with 4.0.3. so what is the rush?
Why would Google give inside information to some tin-pot French operator when they have bigger fish to fry with their bigger markets?
They are bullshitting.

Yeah, it makes zero sense. Google isn't "suspending" an update that never existed to begin with. They are surely working on 4.0.4 or whatever comes next and will release it as soon as it passes the QA tests.

It is also the only source of this rumor and has never been verified by any outside source. Therefore, I tend to believe it is nonsense. And it seems the initial report was inaccurate so it is hard to blame Google for information they didn't release that was not true.
Google must be doing something really big in the next update. Otherwise they wouldn't have delayed it for 3 months.
Or maybe Google devs are too much busy with 5.0 that they are hardly concerned with further updates on ICS.
Just wild guesses. Waiting for a surprise from Google.

My thoughts exactly. They must be cooking up something good.

Not that I want Google to rush or anything, but I must say ICS on my Nexus S (Tmobile) runs quite poorly. Things hiccup and lag a bit, and when returning to the home screen (especially from Chrome or games), the home screen icons can take upwards of 5+ seconds to load. It happens frequently, and is quite frustrating.
Don't get me wrong, I love ICS, but owning a Nexus device to get the latest update is slightly overrated if it means my year+ old phone can't run it well due to hardware limitations. Kind of makes the second year of owning this device less enjoyable.
I'm hoping an update will address this.

If a provider has set a time and date so close, I don't see why it wouldn't be released tomorrow. Yes, it is possible that the release may be delayed but I can't think why. Manufacturers have had early access to Jelly Bean so it's about time some devices received updates.
EDIT : There have been no other official claims of an official release. Mid-July is all people had to go on. But people started making silly guesses. Many thought it would be released on the 4th or the 13th. But there was little reason for this.

Yes, they said mid-july for all devices.
Difference to ICS: We have an announced release-date (more or less exact). Last time they shipped 4.0.3 as a surprise, pulled it after a few days and then remained silent for 3 months until 4.0.4 came out.

just a recap what vodafone says.
I dont get why everyone feels the need to open up a new thread about this instead of going to the countdown thread! You guys seriously need to think about your lifes. Get out, do something fun and for god'S sake leave your computer or xda untouched for a day. It's really not healthy to be so obsessed about JB. I'm excited, too but i'd rather go for a sunbath than sitting in front of my computer waiting for an ota which does not come.
Why are you even so excited about what a carrier or a french blog says? I don't give a single sh... about them. I'm just interested in what google says. Don't get your hopes up cause of this! You will most likely just be disappointed. Same thing with these screenshots about the 4.0.4 ota with this date. Everyone is so damn sure that JB will be pushed when we hit this date. So, OTA is expected to hit us FOR SURE!!! every day since like the 8th...
Long story short: CHILL OUT!!
