MicroSD Cards - Venue Pro General

So has anyone who has replaced their microsd slot not have any issues? If you did replace yours, then its been almost a month and by now you would probably know if there is an issue or not.
And if so what card did you replace it with.

Just so u know it'll be rare to find anyone with this phone since the only ones who got a hold of it had to have access to Microsoft stores which are rare. And even if u had access to ms stores, u were lucky if you got one since they were very limited.
And say they got one, the odds that they knew about xda developers is low. Very low. I mean xda is huge, but there arent a lot of users compared to the shear number of devices actually sold by a company.

So,
did anyone who received their DVP tried to change the SD-card? Has anyone found a (confirmed) (un)official list of cards that are compatible or seem to work perfect?
I'd like to have it here before I order my DVP
Thanks!

Someone stated a 8GB model was successfully swapped with a Class 2 32 GB Sandisk card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9893600&postcount=26

Yeah, I've read that one, so guess it will work, but since Microsoft announced that not just any high class would work, I had hoped some users would have started testing to see which would be best... And I've also read that it's not overal throughput that is important, but random read/writes...

XDA IIi SD Card problems - is this true?

This site claims that there are problems with the sd card slot in the 2i - and the symptoms that they give seem very similar to the ones I am experiencing. Can anyone confirm or deny this? And if its true is there anyway of getting around it?
Thanks

as i long user of the 2i I can say without a doubt there is a problem with the sd cards as i suffered for over 3 months or more of pure frustration and almost throwing the thing away .
but in the end it was down to the sd card speed ,it doesn't really matter what size you have but it's the speed of the card at the moment i am using a 512 transcend 80X card and it has been running perfectly for the past 4 months or so without any problems .there have been plenty people who have now tried the transcend card and found it to be well 1 of the best so i would recomend you buying 1 of these asap ,if you do a google you should find a place selling 1 of these but just make sure it's has a speed of 80x or else you will have the same problems ..also if you wish to get a bigger card the 1meg works okas well
Hmm, I can't say I'm at all happy with that. I have now borrowed a 512mb card and magically all my problems disappear. its the same make and model as my 1gb card so I can't see its a brand issue.
Are o2 aware of the problem? If they are then I think they're breaking the law by continuing to sell the thing.
Does the problem exist with the 2s as well? If not I might go back to o2 and insist they swap it over...
Thanks for your reply
Hi.
I've had an XDA IIi for a few months and had lots of problems with the phone freezing (especially with tomtom 5). The problems got noticeably worse when using "turbo" mode too.
I emailed tomtom for help with navigator and the strange locking up. After a month, they replied to me and said that the pda must use 80x cards or faster... i bought an 150x 2Gb card and haven't looked back...
The phone can now do it all... i use ttn5 with traffic addon whilst driving and use pocket music to play mp3s at the same time and i'm still able to answer the phone to accept calls...
the only problem i've had with a 2Gb SD-Card is that i can ONLY read/write it in the XDA IIi - no other PDA will touch it and no card reader will recognise it.

What brand is your card?
Having already sprung for a 1Gb card I'd hate to have to spend out again becasue of inadequacies in the xda hardware... however if it was an upgrade to 2Gb I might be able to better justify it.
Perhaps this info about card speeds should be posted in the FAQ so that new users have at least some warning of the 2i's problems with SD...
mine is an "a-data" myflash 2gb from here: www.emartbuy.com
£91.65 inc VAT
hope this helps you!

I would just like to say thanks for this topic, the two problems i've had with the PDA2 (XDAIIi) since i got it earlier this year have been fixed by taking out my 60 speed 1gb sd card.

ZDNet Article Claims Lockups and Wi-Fi Issues Related to Bad SD Cards?

This morning an article in ZDNet claims that the writer himself was able to fix these issues by swapping out the stock SDCard on the DVP. Has anyone who has had these issues fixed their problem by doing just this? I myself am a little skeptical myself, but am wondering if this is even a possible reason for all of our problems.
Article is here: http://t.co/38b4FiY
Who knows, some of the guys who got the earliest DVP's bought from MS stores on Nov 8 tried swapping the card, results were hit and miss for compatibility. Some Samsung Focus owners have no problems with their cards, some do. No guarantee the card you use wont give problems. I'd like to see if Dell truly has a fix for the freezing issue, whatever it may be and then look further into this claim.

I find it hard to believe, but I have not seen anyone say it has not worked for them. I swapped my 16g card for a different one, no problems. A friend of mine did the same with a 32g card, same thing. Word is, the issue does not exist on the 8g card. Conclusions...they say none. They're smarter than me. But my phone works well. They're still looking for answers.
I swapped to an 8GB card - no problems.
I swapped to a 32GB card - more problems than before.
Swapped back to my 8GB card - no problems.
I still need to exchange the 32GB card and try a new one, maybe the DVP is just very picky about cards (including the 16GB that Dell includes).
PS: my post on how to do the card switch was mentioned in the article! I feel special.
I swapped to a previously owned 8gb... no issues.
then swapped to a newly purchased 32gb sandisk card... no issues.
getting a 32 gig class 4 microsd to try hopefully monday
My 16GB passes the SD test but I still have issues using WiFi and marketplace at the same time.

Was this the Transcend card you got http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-mic...YOC/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1297964644&sr=8-6? I tried a Sandisk 32GB and it still crashes with wifi but I'm thinking it may be a class 4 as its not labelled in any way, and still crashes. And how is the speed of the device with the new card?
Will be picking mine up in a few mins at the Microsoft store near my house. 8Gb. Salesman yesterday acknowledged the problems but said the newest builds run much smoother. Well see about that!

The 8GB version has not been having the stability problems that the 16GB version has. There were some other issues with the phones sold in November at the Microsoft Store WP7 launch, but those have long since been resolved.
In other words, you should be fine

Yep, that's the new card. I have not had any speed issues with it, either.

Thanks, good to hear, already ordered it and will be installing it today.
Edit: well looks like I'm definitely out of luck, the Transcend card also locked up when using wifi so I'm stuffed. Now have to suffer 8 months of no wifi till I can move to a Nokia WP7.

Another Dell Venue Pro article highlighting the issues

Just wanted to let you guys know. I just got the DVP last week, and I write for abi. After initially being excited for the phone, I have run into the same issues I see here. So, being a writer, I decided to get my experience out for others.
http://anythingbutiphone.com/901
Not trying to spam at all, more just showing how the word is getting out. The more outlets they hear problems from, the better.
I will be doing the memory card swap in the next couple of days, thanks to you guys here. I'll let you all know here as well as on the new site how it goes!
Venue Pro Problems
Sorry to hear that others are having problems with their VP. I got the 8g model about two weeks ago and the only problem I have personally had is with WiFi. WiFi doesn't connect. I spoke to Dell and was told that this is a known problem that will be fixed with NoDo. Maybe a "downgrade" to the 8g model will restore your confidence in the phone? BTW I spoke with Dell about swapping out the sd card and was assured that doing so would not void my warranty. I haven't done so, but that may be an option if Dell Mobility can be believed.
Yes, it appears the 8GB model has been the better version. But, after seeing some reports and some users here, I am going to swap with another card. Hopefully that fixes the situation. I might need to make a call to Dell to double check the warranty situation. That would be nice if it doesn't affect it. Thanks for the tip on that though!
I would go with a Class 2 card if possible, seems the higher class cards are not really beneficial and this has been mentioned by others, my 32GB still crashes the same way as the original one and judging from the speed its probably a class 4.
Swapped with a SanDisk 16gb class 4 card. Essentially the same one that was installed in the Dell. Works flawlessly now!
Article update for anyone interested.

Which 16 / 32 GB Micro SD cards work??

Hi all - just wondering what 16 and 32 gb cards are working in general with WPH
What make and model are you's using???
And have you got Amazon links so i can buy one???
Firstly your posting this question in the worng section should be in question and answers section.
And if you had looked i there you will see plenty of posts on this subject!!!
Look Here
Hi
I'm using a 8 Gigs format in 2 partitions, which wp7 is slightly bigger than android and is working fine but limited of storage on both.
I'm think you will be OK as long you stick with normal brands (sand disk, nokia)
Just don't go for the ones from china 16 Gigs class 6 for £10 they are waste of money.
yet another fail!
there isnt any way of knowing if any card will work, ignore anyone telling you otherwise, your just as likely to get a cheap ebay working as you are a sandisk, just try sticking to class 2 or 4, thats not to say 6 or 10 wont work but its more likely.

There are a lot of people that disagree. Some people have consistently seen a difference. Can you give the reason you believe there is no difference, or why the class 2's and 4's are more likely to work? I would just like to know before my friend buys one for his Leo
This week I changed my micro SD card to a 16GB class10 card and the new card is working much more faster than the 16GB card I used before. I don´t know if the class10 card is necessary but the card was not so expensive (25€ @ Ebay) and the performance is really better.

You cant prove a negative so to speak, you prove to me that they all work an ill take back my comment.
Of course thats not possible because it isnt true, so i am correct by default, there is no way of knowing if any card will work at all unless you have tried that physical card in your device
the reason class 2 and 4 are more likely to work is probably because of random access speeds, manufactures employ all sorts of methods to bump up sequential speeds on SD cards because thats generally all they are used for, large photo/video files, by and large there is very little random access at all, so they use methods that increase the sequential speeds but have a negative effect on random speeds.
if you look at most WP7 devices and the att WP7 branded cards most of them are class 2 or 4
now thats not to say someone hasnt made a class 10 with great random speeds as well which is why its possible you might get one to work but its less likely
hence my statment that its impossible to know whats going to happen, until manufactures either A, ensure that all stock on an existing SKU is identical (wont happen) or B they actually make a WP7 SKU its self, these threads serve no one at all, and potentially could lead to people wasteing money on something that doesnt work for them

128gb sd card

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has had any issues with 128gb sd cards? Looking at buying one but don't want it to fail like the 64gb I got for the s4.
Many thanks in advance

iv been using my 128gb SanDisk micro sd since I bought my s5 last month and iv had no problems at all. I had problems with my s4 using anything bigger than a 32gb memory card random data loss or corrupt card was usually the case.
Zeus85 good to know it works fine.
Couple of questions:
Have you encrypted it as well? Curious how long would it take and would it hinder card performance.
Ate you able to make some card speed tests with and without encryption?
128 gb works just fine on s5.
My sandisk 128gb works great

That is an odd comment suggesting that you don't know or possibly, understand the reasons for the "S4 failures". The 128 GB cards work fine on the S5, the only real drawback being that they carry a stiff price premium over 64 GB cards.
However, any SD card, even highly rated brands can experience unexpected failures. They are usually rare unless a particular manufacturing run or model have an unexpected bug. The latter has been known to happen, but again an uncommon situation.
But by far the majority of SD card failures are due to the large number of inferior quality fakes on the market. Some of the counterfits have perfect packaging and labels and are very hard to identify as fakes. Nevertheless they have a much higher failure rate due to substandard electronics. Meaning that buying cards from a lot of discount sources, in particular ebay and most mail order vendors is fraught with peril.
You won't be able to avoid the risk of "S4" type SD card failures no matter what you do though. All you can do is minimize your risk. But some people will have cards fail, no matter what their size, brand or vendor. Given this, I would rather pay a stiff retail price but obtain a lifetime warranty through a major retailer.
.
Many thanks for the replies people I shall purchase one today
