Hi all - just wondering what 16 and 32 gb cards are working in general with WPH
What make and model are you's using???
And have you got Amazon links so i can buy one???
Firstly your posting this question in the worng section should be in question and answers section.
And if you had looked i there you will see plenty of posts on this subject!!!
Look Here
Hi
I'm using a 8 Gigs format in 2 partitions, which wp7 is slightly bigger than android and is working fine but limited of storage on both.
I'm think you will be OK as long you stick with normal brands (sand disk, nokia)
Just don't go for the ones from china 16 Gigs class 6 for £10 they are waste of money.
yet another fail!
there isnt any way of knowing if any card will work, ignore anyone telling you otherwise, your just as likely to get a cheap ebay working as you are a sandisk, just try sticking to class 2 or 4, thats not to say 6 or 10 wont work but its more likely.

There are a lot of people that disagree. Some people have consistently seen a difference. Can you give the reason you believe there is no difference, or why the class 2's and 4's are more likely to work? I would just like to know before my friend buys one for his Leo
This week I changed my micro SD card to a 16GB class10 card and the new card is working much more faster than the 16GB card I used before. I don´t know if the class10 card is necessary but the card was not so expensive (25€ @ Ebay) and the performance is really better.

You cant prove a negative so to speak, you prove to me that they all work an ill take back my comment.
Of course thats not possible because it isnt true, so i am correct by default, there is no way of knowing if any card will work at all unless you have tried that physical card in your device
the reason class 2 and 4 are more likely to work is probably because of random access speeds, manufactures employ all sorts of methods to bump up sequential speeds on SD cards because thats generally all they are used for, large photo/video files, by and large there is very little random access at all, so they use methods that increase the sequential speeds but have a negative effect on random speeds.
if you look at most WP7 devices and the att WP7 branded cards most of them are class 2 or 4
now thats not to say someone hasnt made a class 10 with great random speeds as well which is why its possible you might get one to work but its less likely
hence my statment that its impossible to know whats going to happen, until manufactures either A, ensure that all stock on an existing SKU is identical (wont happen) or B they actually make a WP7 SKU its self, these threads serve no one at all, and potentially could lead to people wasteing money on something that doesnt work for them

i was wondering , since there are all sorts of micoSD cards out there , from your experience , N1 users , which card will be the best:
1. a 16 gb class 2 , probably sandisk?
2.an 8 gb class 4 or 6 , again sandisk?
i'm asking if you could feel any real difference when you use a class 4 or 6 watching videos or listening to music on it , in comparison with the standard class 2 card that comes with it
cheers
I'd probably go with Class 4 as the minimum. You will find most people here have pushed for Class 6 since we were using the card for Apps2SD (installing applications to a Linux partition on the card, rather than using internal memory) on the G1/Dream and myTouchMyself3G/Magic. The faster the card, the better the apps performed along with the Android OS itself. I still prefer the faster card when using gallery and other apps that scan the card for media and write a great deal to it (like Subsonic).
I have an A Data 16GB class 6 unit I got from Newegg for $50 with free shipping. It costs more now, but it will likely come down again:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211378
I have Sandisk class 6 cards that transfer at 20MB/s write and 25MB/s read, but those were my 8GB units. I didn't benchmark this one as it seems to be fine.
I have two 8gb class6 and and a 16gb class2, i use my class6 cards in the phones I use the most, can i tell a huge difference in speed in everyday use? Not really. But Im still gonna get a 16gb class6 because it does feel just enough faster to make it worth the money.

oh , but you do say it actually is different? i mean , from what i know , for a card to be faster , the other hardware parts and specially the OS itself should be capable of reading and writing things as fast.
but you do say it make a difference?

no the OS will execute the "write" or "read" command and the sdcard will be accessed at the max speed allowed by the sdcard itself.
I wouldnt personally use a class2 if possible, tho with Nexus's good amount of ram, any slowness would probably be less noticeable.
thnx guys , so i'm guessing i gonna buy me a class 4 card

Dunno how much space you need but I just bought a 8G CL6 for £13.99 from amazon.
You can get a 16gb class 6 on newegg for 48 bucks. Know it's a little pricey, but it's the best of both worlds.
thanks Mi|enko , but i live in UK , so if i order from US , i would probably be surcharged by import tax as well , at least that's what i know
thanks Abbsta , that sounds about right . i will try it in a bit. cool mate.

Hope either helps.
Just bought this, hope it works! http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Sam-sung-8GB...ccessories?hash=item414c8e2a7a#ht_1878wt_1165
According to this
http://www.clove.co.uk/dell-venue-pro
The Dell Venu Pro has an SDHC slot capable of handling the new 32GB cards, to don't forget to order a card with your phone. Remember you have to do a hard reset when you change cards, so it's easiest to bung a huge card in before you first switch it on to save pain later!
Wheres it say that? cannot see that at all on that site..
You're not looking very hard...
Incidentally, Expansys also confirm the SDHC slot is present.
Really sorry mate, I thought what you had said had been quoted from the site!
Tempts me even more at the Venue Pro now... £440 isnt a bad deal either and looks really nice.
Saw the HD7 in the O2 store today, looked lovely but I have a Touch Pro 2 and I really think I would miss a hardware keyboard if I went for another phone other than the Venue Pro or the HTC Pro 7
A NOTE ON WP7 AND SD CARDS:
At the moment, no publicly available microSD card has the correct characteristics to be used as internal memory for WP7.
The "Class" system for SD cards measures minimum bulk transfer speeds, while this is useful for devices like cameras, it is not so good if the SD card is being used as a device's main storage.
This is not FUD or BS - the micro SD cards being shipped with the phones have a lower latency and random read\write rates than the normal ones you can purchase.
The reason they are including user-accessible slots is such that 1) the carriers can offer different capacity sizes in-store when selling the phone and 2) (hopefully) in the near future they may be cards that are publicly available with the correct characteristics that can be certified to work with WP7.
For the time being, I would recommend holding off on buying a micro SD card for your WP7.

I know exactly what you mean - I had a play with a HD7 in my local O2 store and was really really impressed by how fluid and responsive WP7 is. The handset is far better in the flesh than on video reviews and photos. Loved it!
I have the Dell Venue pro on pre-order at Clove.co.uk and Im very tempted to go with the HD7 now...
What do I do!?!?!
So, we now get told yes, there are slots, but you can't use them
So my question now is, when will we be able to buy them( I will personally pay$150 for a class 6 32GB micro SD)
Luckily I don't need a new phone yet, but I also don't want to sit on the outside for 5 months without any new hardware.

Bear in mind the HD7 doesn't have an SD card slot, nor does it have an AMOLED screen or Gorilla Glass. The Venue Pro has all that plus 1GB ROM and a hardware keyboard. And it's cheaper.

Class 6 32GB Micro SDHC cards aren't available yet AFAIK.
Also, yes you CAN use the SD card slot on the Venue Pro. Please pay attention. You just slip the SD card in and do a hard reset. Easy-peasy.

Class 6 SD cards are available, I believe Kingston claims to have a Class 10. But remember that the 'Class' system only refers to minimum bulk continuous read\write - not latency or random read\write.
And, yes, you technically CAN use the card slot. What I am saying is that it is NOT RECOMMENDED.
I know some of you won't believe me\Microsoft's own documentation, but the WP7 guys did tests with standard SD cards and they could not achieve the performance they were targeting and, in some cases, caused strange behavior, serious slow downs and even crashes.
So it is possible but, like everything else on this site, you do it at your own risk.
Surely there must be a legitimate technical/design requirement as to why expansion slots are not on the first batch of handsets?
Also if they are going to use custom cards for system/storage doesnt this kind of increase costs?
Jim - good shout on the Venue Pro advantages! I was having a weak moment - I want a WP7 handset now! lol

Sounds about like how they use a custom HDD for their Xbox.... :|
I can go through a few hard resets...unless there is issue with identification of device.
If not then I can use a hard reset
It seems to be less custom cards, in the fact that they can only be sourced through MS, but higher performance cards, unlike the HDDs which are just a rip-off.
Seeing as the cards memory seems to be completely added to the standard, much faster flash memory, it would bog down the system when being accessed, compared to the faster flash used in the phone memory.
If there is such a thing as a class 6 or 10 32GB Micro SDHC card, I'd very much like to see a link to it so I can make a purchase. My class 2 is in the post as it's the fastest I could find.
The notion that putting an SD card in a phone's SD card slot is "NOT RECOMMENDED" is rubbish and again I'd love to see a reference that shows this is the case.
I saw a Focus review where they put a 32GB card in the SD slot and other than having to do a hard reset, they had no problems at all.
WP7 presents the combined internal and SD card storage as one block to the applications, but I'm sure that deep in the OS it knows the difference and uses the faster internal memory when efficiency calls for it.
I just received my Sandisk 32GB Micro SDHC and although it was advertised as class 2, it is in fact class 4! Rejoice!
I ordered the Samsung Focus with Amazon Wireless for one penny and a two year contract with AT&T! Couldn't be any happier with that.
Anyway, I ordered a case:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00495YF8A/ref=oss_product
And a screen protector (I know it's tough to scratch but eh, why not. Lol)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003F8C1GK/ref=oss_product
So I've been thinking about how much memory is on the phone. 8GB is nice but I will want to put a few of my 720P movies onto the Focus. I figured I could get 8B Micro SDHC (Class 10) and it would make it, 16GB. That's pretty decent, right? I think it will hold me over... Lol.
I did some research and I get the higher the class, the higher the write speeds. Right?
Well, what do ya'll think of this one?

Thanks in advance everyone!!!
8gb is good enough for me....for now! Ill be buying a 16gb card soon enough tho because everytime you change the sd card you have to do a full reset on your phone, so id rather just do it now and get it all over with. So, what im trying to tell you is just get yourself a 16gb card if you going to be adding 720p movies...that way you wont really need to worry about changing the card later. As for the class...class 10 is unnecessary....class 2 has been proven to be VERY sufficient in the focus...even class 4. I had a class 6 and now I have a class 2 and there is NO difference in performance on my focus. Anyways, as for sd cards, be careful because some aren't working properly....I would say your safest bet is buying Sandisk...since thats what Samsung is using in the focus for memory right now.
Hope this helps!

Well, if I put a 720P movie on there, I'll just delete it once I'm finished watching it. Not going to have more than a few gigs of music too. So 8GB is good for me. Obviously once you put a movie on there you can delete it and get your memory back, correct? Sounds nooby but just double checkin... Lol. The higher the class the faster it gets on the card, right?
sd card
i got a sandisk 16g class 4 from radio shack cost about $34, had it in since two weeks before christmas.... loaded it almost full, empted most of it out loaded and unloaded stuff, havn't had any problems so far....... been running strong and just as fast as without the card...

correct...once you delete things you get your space back. I didn't notice much difference in transfer speed between my class 6 and class 2. So if you can, just save yourself the money and get class 4. There was an article I read somewhere that a higher class can actually make performance worse on the phone. Don't know how true it is, but class 2 has been perfect for me. No difference anywhere.
You need too spend some time reading this thread before buying a microsd card:

Determining whether an SD card is Windows Phone 7 compliant is not a simple matter of judging its speed class. Several other factors, such as the number of random read/write operations per second, play a role in determining how well an SD card performs with Windows Phone 7 devices.

A higher speed class can actually work against you because sometimes the maker sacrifices random operations for speed.
You can either wait for official "windows phone 7 certified" cards or take your chances. Read the first post carefully, especially the most recent posts. I personally have been using a 16gb Samsung card with no problems. Caveat emptor.

If you read the feedback, nothing but positive reviews.
"Pros: Very good price to performance ratio. Works with the Samsung Focus. Good read write speeds.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Not sure why some say negatives about the speed of the card. Maybe they got a bad one, but this tested out at just under 4.5gb write speeds. I had been using a Sandisk class 2 card with my Samsung Focus, but it would do some random rebooting and crashing. With this card it has been absoulutly perfect for over a week of use. I have 15gb of music and photos on the phone so I know that I am using the memory card along with the 8gb that is onboard with the phone."
Kinda sold on this... Should I do it?!?!?!?! Buy it right now?!?!! lol
This is pretty much what I was asking in another thread. I want to go with a 32GB card as I don't want to go through hard reset if I ever need more memory later on.
What is a good 32GB tmicroSD card hat works with Focus with no issues? I would like name of manufacturer, class and even the part# so I can source locally (go to store or order online).
Thanks.
No lie, you're going to spend a lot of $ and 32GB is overkill.

After reading the large thread on compatible cards above, it seems the real test is if you've loaded over 8GB of data onto the SDHC card (or over 16GB total in your case) and don't experience any problems. If that's the case then that's awesome (and it also sadly verifies the fact that no one knows which brand of card really works than the Sandisk 8GB Class 2, which is mentioned in the official instruction manual).
To the OP, I've stuck with the 8GB Sandisk. I considered the OEM version for $12 USD available on Amazon but decided against it, and went with the retail packaged version, which I got at Radio Shack for $20 USD. 14 or so GB will be good enough until the official certified ones are announced.
well ill just refer to him as mr arse... but mr arse is partially correct.... mine was stable up to 15gb then after that it went downhill fast.... so give the dude a bit of a break....
Has anyone seen any OFFICIAL announcement that there will be APPROVED cards for WP7. I know that Sandisk tried to pull a fast one and say their's were approved but then pulled them. Is MS even allowing such a program?
Hey Buddies from all over the world....
Flashed WP7 on HD2 with the original SD-Card, which came along with HTC's HD2,
so far, so fine....
Tried the same with my Kingston 8GB SDHC, but WP7 won't be flashed....everything is soooooooooo slow and I have the feeling that the flash process gets stucked...
So, how can i formate this SDHC to be compatible with WP7 ?

Try sdformatter. Then inserted into the phone and do a full reset.
its worth pointing out that there is no "right" SD card that will work, well there is but not using a method other than buy and try.
Even within brands the cards may be different, just because one bloke gets it working doesnt mean you will with yours. I have 2 2GB Sandisk class4 bought on the same day at the same store, identical, one works one doesnt, i hve a 4GB Kingston that wont but the 8GB does.
Its a bit of a lottery im affraid, im sure folk will disagree but from my point of view i wouldnt go spend a fortune on a card that maybe useless, if you dont mind burning money or have another use for it then get whatever but just edge on the side of caution!
try re-formatting your sd card, if problem still happens then it's your sd card and you need a new one.

You're completely right... there's no guarantee that any particular sd card will work. Manufacturers don't rate the random access speed and they don't keep it consistent. One batch of the same may work while another batch made the next day may not work. Sandisk class 2 and 4 seem to most consistently work... no kingston has worked well for me yet, but 7/8 of the sandisk class 2 and 4 cards I've tried has... the one sandisk card that didn't work well was a 16gb class 2, but I have another 16gb class 2 sandisk with same model number that works great.
i cant find it just now, but there is a list somwhere of all the different types of cards over several brands that some chap managed to get, stacks of data for each card, and its shocking what the companies get up to, it "appears" in somecases, main stream branded cards may infact be cheap rip offs, im not talking dodgy Ebay sales here im talking propper branded cards may infact be rebranded tat. for that reason im happy with the card i have, its slightly smaller than i would like but i dont have another use for a large card so im buggered if im going to folk out for a tiny wee paper weight if it doesnt work.

Guys,
Maybe it will be helpfull for smbd as well. I have a Sandisk 2GB card (which was included when I buy the phone) and it was incompatible several times I flashed Windows Phone 7. But when I formatted it with FAT system (not FAT32), looks like this helped - using now several days without any restarts
And I don't mean for installing a ROM onto (I use NAND builds)--just for storage purposes.
Been looking at upgrading my slow 8GB storage card to a faster and larger one (16 or 32GB), and I can't seem to find what is going to be compatible and what will not. For example, I was going to get a 16GB PNY Class 10 card, but one of the first user review comments was that someone got one for their rooted HTC HD2, and the card would not allow the phone to boot (however, it worked fine with their camera).
I'm not sure if I should go with SanDisk cards or Samsung cards, or PNY, Class 6 maximum, Class 10 maximum, or what have you. Some are on better deals than others, but clearly price is secondary to compatibility.
Is there some sort of a master list of compatible cards that I've missed in my search? Many thanks!!!

Thank you. I do respect Samsung a lot, based on personal experience with desktop RAM, but my brief research into Sandisk offerings have returned questionable results: some people say that advertised speeds don't match real transfer speeds.
What about the PNY cards though--I'm still unclear what makes a card compatible or not. Is it down to individual firmware or is there just some basic limits for HTC HD2 Leo (rooted) -- like no UHS cards. In theory, those PNY Class 10 cards seem like they should be okay, but that one review makes me wonder if the user did something incorrectly, or whether there was a true incompatibility.
Been looking at Samsung cards, and they come in a few varieties: regular, "plus", and "pro". The first two are older, I guess, since they are stamped with "class 6" but differ in their speeds.
The "regular" version for up to 24MB/s:

The "plus" version with "UHS-I Interface" for up to 48MB/s:
http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MB-MPAGB/AM
And then there's one labeled "class 10" that is the "pro" version, supporting up to 70MB/s:

I imagine the regular version is just fine, but would the faster two cards simply not work with HD2? PNY Class 10 cards are better priced, but again, I have no idea if they will work. Any pointers into how I can research micro SDHC card compatibility would be greatly appreciated! The manual and phone description simply state that it is SD 2.0 compatible up to 32GB, which doesn't help with my search, since some of those cards appear to not work well (hearsay).
