I am swimming with the amount of info. I want to root for:
1. have an unrooted phone to add in performance and better battery management.
2. install a custom rom (for the above reasons)
3. install Froyo when available, I don't want to wait for HTC.
4. I don't like HTC sense. I'm using Tag Home
5. remove sprint bs.
Flashing radios, custom recoveries???? I'm lost a bit.
Can I just root via toast method and flash DC3.1 and I'm all good?
I'm a noob and am swimming with info overload!
Yes root and flash a rom and you're good. You might to flash a radio if the rom recommend you updating it for better performance.
Anyone know the radio flash for DC3.1? If there is one?
I have best buys insurance so I can just take in my phone if I brick it but how do i flash the stock rom back if I have to go to Sprint for tech support?

If you do a true brick, you can't and won't need to flash back a stock rom.
Follow part one and two of the rooting / unlocking nand guide. You'll be fine. The official sprint ruu can put you back to stock if needed.
Is this the stock sprint ruu?
RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.6_Radio_1.39.00.05.31_release_171253_signed.zip
or
RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe
What steps do I take to return to the stock rom if I don't want to root? Many thanks in advanced for tolerating this noob!
Its the exe file. Just connect your phone to your pc and run the exe.
Is the file pre-OTA SD fix? If so I guess I have to get the fix.
I assume once full froyo comes out instructions will be given where I can flash froyo?
Just some quick tips. DC3.1 is very bugged, you want DC3.1.1_Test2 right now.
Froyo currently no camera support, might want to wait...comes out next month supposedly anyways.
Requirements are you flash Toasts rooted rom with part 2 (nand unlock), this gives you a proper recovery, etc to flash unsigned roms.
Then go ahead and install whatever rom you like, many don't include the radio update, you can install that over any rom to update it.
Thank you very much!
I'm waiting for the official Froyo to flash.
I can't seem to find DC3.1.1_test2 can you send me a link or point me in the right direction?
Is the the radio file to flash? EVO-1.39.00.05.31-radio-signed.zip
Thanks Again!
Check out the root guide that I just updated on the development board.

Hi. I'm assuming your phone is rooted? If so, download ROM manager, and you can preserve the ROM from there...
To view stock ROMs please visit samsfirmware<dot>com and download the ROM you want i.e. version, brand (network specific), country etc.
I'll be honest, haven't once regretted upgrading to Froyo. For more information on upgrading see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778880

Did you try the superoneclick method of rooting during boot? Follow the link in my sig for instructions
So, I'd like to upgrade my HTC Wildfires firmware to the latest one (not sure whether its 2.2 or 2.3 atm) and I'd like to do it via PC, connected with USB cable... How do I do it, what should I download, etc... I'm a complete newbie when it comes to stuff like this so any kind of guidance would be highly appreciated.
connect to wifi and ask yourself if you are sure you do not want to root or flash a custom rom. if the anser is no go to menu > settings > about phone > software updates > check now then follow the on screen prompts
IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ROOT
WHEN THE UPDATE IS INSTALLING DONT DO ANYTHING STUPID (E.G. REMOVE THE BATTERY. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DEVICE
As the previous post said: IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ROOT YOUR PHONE.
Unless you know why you want to 'upgrade' via this route I would highly recommend not doing it.
There are already Froyo (2.2) and Gingerbread (2.3) ROMs available in the forums immediately that can only be installed on a rooted device. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO THIS IF YOU UPGRADE THE WAY YOU ARE SUGGESTING, IE. THERE IS NO GOING BACK IF YOU UPGRADE THE WAY YOU ARE SUGGESTING. YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO ROOT YOUR PHONE.
Apologies for the shouting but you really should understand what you will be missing out on if you can't root your phone.

Just read this thread, completely:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824396
Must've been blind not to notice that thread... Anyway, already got CM7 on my Wildfire, thanks !
Basically I want the phone to go back to the "welcome to android" page at the start WITHOUT losing root. Do i just do a factory reset? Will this get rid of root? Does it get rid of CWM?
I have accounts and stuff that i'd rather get rid of myself so the new owner doesn't have to hassle.
Thanks in advance guys, I want the new owner to start fresh, but keep root in case he wants to start adding roms himself.
EDIT: Can I just do a backup, flash a stock rom, see if it works then delete the backup? this way it is technically a "fresh start" but without any of my accounts, right?
if you are running a rooted rom you can factory reset without losing root
Well right now im running the stock rom but the phone is rooted, does that make a difference?
i rooted my fone a few months ago and all of a sudden it says s-on and it wont let me unroot. wat can i do??
Can anyone chime in? I'm selling the phone in a few hours and I still have my main account synced to the phone, will restoring to factory from the factory rom UNroot the phone? I don't want this to happen. What are my options?
I would just reflash the ROM your using and clear your SD card of personal things. I just did this with my HD2 running Android and it worked great.

Did you do an OS update? If you dont have root anymore why dont you just go back to the start and try your luck again?

The problem is i'm running the stock vanilla froyo rom that came with the phone. I dont have a backup that doesn't already have my main gmail account already synced to the phone.
Should I just download another stock vanilla original OEM 2.2 rom and flash over this one? then delete any backups of my old rom (the original)?
Forget about stock, just download CM7 and flash it

Thats not a bad idea, does netflix work with cm7?
Also I was having problems with a few 2.3.3 roms making my usb transfer incredibly slow, the only roms that didn't do that were virtous (sense) and stock froyo... I dont want to sell the phone with a rom that makes the usb port un-usable...
Edit: Forgive all the questions, usually I would do my research but this is super last minute, all I want is for the phone to be stock without my gmail account synced and still rooted so that the new owner can choose roms as he likes.
You know, I couldnt say about netflix. I was running meXdroid and netflix was fine. I flashed CM7.1 RC yesterday and can not seem to login. Reading comments in the CM7 thread it seems netflix is hit or miss. I have never had issues with USB so can not say either way. Why dont you visit the CM7 thread and read some of the comments.
Thanks a lot for the help. I went with just flashing another stock OEM ROM from THIS thread, and so far so good, I got the ODEX version just because I want to make sure that Netflix works, as it is one of my prime selling points. Not very many android phones can play Netflix, and im certainly going to miss that, aswell as the keyboard.
I deleted all of my old backups, so none of my gmail accounts should be on the phone anymore.
I hope this thread helps someone who is trying to do the same thing, its definitely tricky.
In the end I played it safe, but there are certainly many options out there. Thanks for all the help everyone who replied.
nope i didnt do any update and im tryin to return a fone and i gotta bring it bak to stock

I'm not really familiar with what android version Cricket currently has on the Droid X, but I just picked up one this week from C Spire. My best suggestion would be to just root and uninstall any preinstalled apps that you couldn't otherwise if you don't have to sbf for your carrier and android version readily available. I'll actually be returning my phone this morning because I made the mistake of trying to flash Liberty3, and it somehow has FUBAR'd the bootloader on my end (absolutely no luck with the sbf using rsd lite or sbf flash on ubuntu).
Coming from the HTC Hero, I can go ahead and tell you that the way these two companies do bootloaders are entirely different beasts. The Hero was an absolute breeze to root and flash roms on, but that may also have been because of its huge userbase at one point as well. Anyways, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by losing the Cricket flash, but the original rom will be completely replaced if you flash the rom correctly (wiping data, cache, and dalvik from the bootloader).
edit:
After Googling some terms for the Droid X on Cricket, I don't think you'll have nearly as much of an issue if you follow the guides available. Just read carefully and always do a nandroid backup if possible.

You will not lost the flash unless you SBF, or upgrade to gingerbread if your not currently on it. The worst part about flashing custom ROM's is getting everything working again. What I mean about everything working is MMS, and web. MMS is the hardest. Try my thread here http://www.cricketusers.com/verizon-motorola-droid-x/12264-working-apn-mms-apk.html#post21416 and see if you can get it working. Before doing anything make a backup so you can fall back onto a working rom.
