[Q] [NOOB] Debranding (and Upgrade) - Wildfire General

[NOOB ALERT]: I'm completely new to Android and to smartphones in general and I really don't understand all the jargon used here...
Please try to explain things as simple and as detailed as you can, thanks!
Hello everyone,
I searched a lot before asking this but I'm still missing some bits here and there...
I'll receive an unlocked, Vodafone-branded HTC Wildfire very soon with Android 2.1.
I'd like to remove the Vodafone branding and use the latest official release of Android for this phone (I'm not interested in custom versions for now).
Can you guys please explain me all the steps I need to do?
As far as I got, the first thing would be to 'root' the Wildfire as explained here, right?
Next, I guess I have to download a ROM and then 'flash' it with a goldcard (or something similar), right?
Where do I get this 'official' ROM? And the goldcard? How do I flash it?
Overall:
- What are the real risks of the whole procedure?
- I will be doing this on a GNU/Linux system and I virtually haven't access to Windows computers, is this a problem?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Er ignore this post

Ok so basically I need to:
1. Root the phone:
--> This or this
2. Backup the current ROM:
--> This
3. Create a goldcard
--> This or this
3. Flash my ROM
--> This using the RUU_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.37.405.1_Radio_13.53.55.24H_3.35.19.
25_release_151892_signed.exe ROM found here
Is everything correct or I am missing something?
What I don't understand is: why on the unlockr.com website it basically jumps from step 1 to step 4?
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks,

app gone mad

Ok, I don't usually do this so don't blame me if something goes wrong please
First link for 1.
U don't need the guide for back up, that's for amonRa (he hasn't done one for wildfire yet)
once unrevoked has finished ur phone should b on its recovery screen (black with green text, called clockworkmod).
If not or to perform future back ups
a) turn off phone
b) hold volume down button whilst pressing n holding power.
U should now be on a white screen with text.
Wait for some green text to flash up n go, then
c) press vol down until recovery is selected.
d) press power
U should now have the black screen w/green text.
e) use vol down n go to nandroid>back up.
f) select with track pad.
Once finished
g) reboot system
Then make ur goldcard, the first link u provided is better imo
next
a) go settings>applications>debug n tick the box
b) plug ur phone (powered on) in to computer
c) double click ruu n follow on screen instructions.
U should now have debranded your phone and be on the generic wildfire Rom
Next (if u want root access)
a) Run revoked again
b) make another back up
If u want a custom Rom
a) download one
b) put it on SD card (not in another folder tho)
c) boot into recovery
d) select install zip/select zip from sdcard.
Just couple of things
1) I've never used Linux so I don't know if the section where u use the ruu works the same, that's what I done on windoze.
2) I don't know where this 1.37 Rom comes from, what carrier it applies to ect I used the 1.25 (I think) and then done the update when prompted.
3) hope this helped and GOOD LUCK

Ok, just has a system update pop up, 1.37 is uk generic rom, I probably shoulda looked a bit harder

2.3 for Legend

i'm not really a noob but noob to the Legend, i used to have Xperia X10 and HTC HD2 and it was easy to root and installing ROMs
now i have this Legendary Legend and i want to root it and install different ROMs i'm currently running 2.2, radio-7.13.35.05, and on the boot it says
LEGEND PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.01.0000
MICROP-0816
TOUCH PANEL-SYN07_0105
i've been reading the stickies foe awhile but i didnt know what is the difference between S-ON and OFF and if 2.2 is rootable or i have to downgrade to 2.1 and if i have to root this HBOOT thing!! actually i'm lost!! one last thing what is the best ROM for Legend? is there 2.3 or CM7 out for it?
P.S. excuse my poor english
try this
Rom, the Best so far is Blay0's B 0.7 ROM... here in the forum...
if your interested with CM7... go to their website to download. you can download the nighty or RC built found there.
so download it in advance...
read this thread from the top bottom... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894465
so that you know what you are suppose to do.
and
there's something i want you to try. is skip the third guide and continue here.
let this part as your stop marker...
"So by now you will be on an unrooted Eclair rom. The third guide I used was by David Cogen" from the thread
now you have an unrooted Eclair rom
Connect to wifi or set your APN and download Rom Manager from the market. you can use the search button in the market.
then in Rom Manager. the first on the list "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". click on that to download it.
connect your pc and enable usb storage. brows to E:\clockworkmod\download\mirror1.kanged.net\recoveries
and copy recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-legend.zip it to the root of your SD card..
than rename 'recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-legend.zip' to "update.zip"
while you are here rename the "LEGEIMG.zip" to something else to speed things up.
and also copy the ROM that you want to the SD card.
now preparation done...
1. power off your phone...
2. hold Vol - and the power button.
3. navigate to recovery.
4. on the red [!] screen. hold vol+ and power button.
5. do a factory restore.
6. apply update.zip
7. you are in clockworkMod. i assume you know what to do.
8. if boot loop happen after you applied the new rom. take the battery out. and repeat step 1-5 and reboot phone (this happens to me, as i did not do step 5 and proceed).
i've tested it from unrooted eclair. but i tested this after i applied the legeimg.zip from a rooted rom. not too sure if it works for you about half an hour ago. so give it a try.

Hi, im new!

Hi, just bought my DHD today=)
1st android phone....went from iphone 1st gen...to nokia n97..
want to try out android system....
eveyr very happy with the huge screen,

also i have a SH!T load of unwanted apps..
which i cant uninstall for some reasons...
also i want to try the rooting procedure myself...
i really like to know how to do these stuff...
i want to do a clean install of everything...
for my understanding...i need to re-flash my phone to a previous version ?
cant be 1.72 ota or higher right??inorder to root it??!!?!?!
i m very new to this...acutally 1st time encoutering Android...
root is like Jailberaking right??!?! n whats "S-OFF" ???
i would also like to install 2.3 gingerbread into my dhd...
so is there any guide i can follow with unroot then root again?!?!?!?
thanks

look here for a guide -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11557769
ok from my understanding now...
flashing rom means...kinda like INstall a new OS onto my phone???...
like right now my phone is rooted ..and Busybox installed???
i got those workng i guess...
so right now i just have to download a new custom rom or Oem rom..
n re-flash my phone..then my phone is like new???
i cant delete or uninstall all of the apps on my phone...
i dont need most of them...
i wanna do a clean freash reinstall of the oem rom...
n probably wanna flash my phone wiht custom roms later on...
so do i just follow the DOWNGrADE procedure???

then install new rom???
RIGHT????
i think i got most of the guides bookmarked...
n by saving the rom into the sd card..
i insert sdcard into my laptop n drag n drop thru windows...???
if so...damn i need those usb/sd adapters....
man this is sh!t is complicated...
but im sure ppl with DHD will help a brother out without any flaming
When you wipe and flash, your phone will be clean, like new.
If your phone is already rooted, you do not need to downgrade. Just proceed to S-OFF. You can read what it is from many sources, just use search or scroll through some sticky guides.
Just follow the rom flashing guide, there is no need to confirm every step here.
You do not need to connect the SD into PC directly, you can do it via USB, use disk drive mode in your phone.
Follow the S-off guide and maybe the eng-off (For radio flashing)
1) Does you're phone have superuser on it? If no you can download it from the market.
2) Next download Rom manager from the market, flash the new Recovery (1st option in the app) (superuser needed)
3) Download: Fullwipe 1.3 ( you can find that in the dev section ) an put it on you're SD (You can use USB Sorage option as well)
4) Download the rom that you like from the Dev section and put it on you're SD
5) Power down you phone, then once it turned off hold volume - and then press power till you get a bootloader screen, Select recovery. ( use the volume keys to scroll and the power key to select)
6) Once in recovery choose "Install zip from sd" and select Fullwipe 1.3 and flash it.
7) After that you do the same, but now select you're rom.
8) reboot and enjoy you're new clean rom (Y)
!! First time boot can take a while!!
Hint: The new MIUI 1.4.8 from MR Garak is a nice rom. Its like Ios,touchwiz an Android combined (Y)
You can delete the unwanted app with root explorer. System/app/ But remember to not delete system apps.

Do radio S-OFF, and if you want to flash radios, you should do ENG S-OFF too. The ENG S-OFF can be done in any ROM, so it is not necessary to do it just now.
You have the stock kernel.

You have your current rom, should everything go tits up, you will be able to restore to your current rooted status
, without a backup you'll have to start again from scratch
Nandroid backup can be replaced by any custom ROM + full wipe, so it is not that important actually. I have never made a nandroid backup, because I just do not feel like I need one.
It is good for people who want to keep a copy of their stock ROM, or backup a custom ROM which has already been set up nicely.

[Q] Unroot

Ok, I didn't want to start a thread but I have search for three hours and tried numerous things and i'm confused.
I need an IDIOTS guide to unrooting my phone.
I did a nandriod backup and I have my Standard ROM, I had clockwork but that is gone.
All I want now is the Root gone so I have a standard HTC Wildfire back
I am on Vodafone, UK.
Any help appreciated, i've searched through all the guides downloaded loads of stuff and tried flashing it and it all fails, there seems to be many ways this might work but I can't get passed half of the steps.
If someone could please give me a hand it would be much appreciated.
1.) Create a Gold Card. Follow this guide: http://android.modaco.com/content/general-discussion/305672/creating-a-goldcard/.
2.) Download a RUU that fits your demands and make sure it starts with 2.xx from here: http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Buzz. I recommend you to download this one: http://shipped-roms.com/download.php?category=android&model=Buzz&file=RUU_Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2_22_405_1_Radio_13_55_55_24H_3_35_20_10_release_160191_signed.exe because that one is indicated WWE, so it should work world wide.
3.) Install it on your phone using PC. (The file you downloaded should be .exe so you just have to plug your phone to PC in charge only mode and start the .exe you downloaded).
4.) Follow the steps provided by the application.
5.) Wait for it to install. Done.
The file you download must start with 2.xx because that is Froyo (Android 2.2) and that will overwrite your Hboot and remove the root access.
Hit thanks if I helped you.
I think if you do a nand backup before rooting, just restore it with clockworld

I am right now looking at the gold card and I need a spare micro SD? Can this be done on the standard phone SD or does it need to be on the micro SD?
Also if I just found the newer version of android and kept the root and flashed the updated rom onto my phone, i know it would still be rooted but it'd be like a normal phone again.. right?
Pulling my hair out now.
This is so frustrating.
I cant download a .zip to the phone as it aborts and I can't flash the standard RUU because I don't have a gold card thing?
I don't know whether or not its safe to use my phone SD card or do I need a new one?
Surely theres a simple way around this! I.e Download and flashing the standard rom to the phone and it just working? I am on the standard ROM now with root, I am happy to have the root I just want the updated firmware!
What happened to your Clockworkmod Recovery? You might want to get that back, because it is the only way you can then install Zip files. Can you provide more details? Is your Wildfire S-OFF? Are you on Android 2.1?
Refer Part 5 of the 1st post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
The Safe Flash ZIPs of all Froyo RUU's is what you should be looking at. They are the untouched stock Froyo ROM, with only the bootloader and radio removed. But, you'll obviously need Clockworkmod Recovery to run it.

I don't know, how would I find out? I recovered back to december when my phone didn't have clockworkmod. It was just rooted.
So do I need to reflash the clockworkmod onto my phone? Or is there a way of getting it back?
What is S-OFF? (Sorry..) and yeah, I think it's 2.1.
So once I get clockworkmod and run a RUU with a stock rom on it, It will be gone of the clockworkmod rom? And the root? or just the rom?
Thanks!
Interesting how you have root without Clockworkmod. AFAIK, its not possible. Do you see a Superuser Icon on your App Drawer?
If you are still on 2.1, to get back Clockworkmod, you will have to use Unrevoked. Guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824396
Also, if your ultimate goal is removing Clockworkmod and Root and getting official 2.2.1, dont bother with getting Clockworkmod. Just make a Goldcard and flash the RUU then. Yes, flashing an RUU will remove root and Clockworkmod. Also, Goldcards can be any SDCard, including the one included with the phone. But, before using it as a Goldcard, make sure to take a backup because it will have to be formattted.
Tbh, my overall goal was just to get rid of the ROM as it was buggy, and got worse and worse to the extent I couldn't take or watch videos, crashed a lot, etc. etc. Wouldn't download from the market half the time
I'm happy to just leave it rooted, I just want the easiest option to getting the latest update and having the phone "normal" again
I will try what you have said in the first option, if not i'll use my SD card and get cracking
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788776
Can I use that to get unrevoked?
I still have the root, is that clockworkmod? As in, I hold down the volume down key and get the menu, I just don't know what to do with it.. Does that help?
Yes, I would recommend that as well. Simply clockworkmod and root will not affect or detract from the stock experience of your phone at all. Also, it will leave the door open for future modifications and customization, if the need arises.
EDIT: Yes you can use that guide as well. Same thing really. Clockworkmod and Root are two different things. Clockworkmod is a Custom Recovery (When you hold down Vol Down and Power Button, Navigate to RECOVERY using the Volume Key, and Press the Power Button on the RECOVERY word. If Clockworkmod opens, you have it. If it doesn't , and you get an image of an Android with a Red Triangle, you haven't got it).
Root is simply the presence of the Superuser binary, and can be determined by the fact if you have a "Superuser" icon in your main app drawer.

[Q] HTC WildFire A3335 Qustion

I have a basic question,
I'm only asking because there's far too much
information available,
on here
and its not easy to find what best fits my
needs.
I have an unlocked A3335 wildfire ( Telstra NextG network 3g version), I'm using it on optus,
my boyfriend was useing it he dowloaded a
font change app for the phone,
but when he did it my phone went in to
bootloop mode.and keep't bootlooping again
and again
all i get is the start up screen,
with yes you guessed it
(Telstra NextG network 3g crap)
All I want to do is try and get my phone from
this bootloop mode and try and recover...
my phone back to how it was.
Its hard to explain,
ok when i go in to the boot screen
i have this on my phone
BUZZ PVT SHIP S- Off
HBOOT-1.01.0002
MICROP-0622
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-3.35.20.10
DEC 27 2010,
17:49:10
and it reads the sd card,
it said the Boot Image. is missing
dont know why a app would take this out
but this is what happen
So Now when i did the fastboot on my phone
it done nothing,
then did the clear storge.
then i did the recovery
it rebooted to a black screen with A
triangle shape with one of these things
! in the middle of it,
but still stuck
I can follow the regular guides for rooting,
can any one help me to get my phone back to
how it was please
And I really don't care about this part much,
but would be nice to have it off the phone
and remove all the telstra junk and restore
the phone back to how HTC would ship it,
(all the junk apps they include could easily be optionally installed from marketplace if you want their crap...)
(obviously I'm in Australia also)
There are so many ROMS and options available,
including the ones from shipped roms
(it wont let me post the link because I'm new).
I just want my phone back to how i got it,
can any one help me please....
please send me a private messages,
with a step by step guide to do so thanks..
Since you are s-off u can use fastboot flash from windows to flash a clockwork mod recovery. After you do that, every thing will be simple. Just download a rom in zip format, put it to sd go to recovery( just do what you have done to see the triangle in blackscreen. Note that if u flash cwm you will no longer see that triangle). Then use your volume down button to reach install zip from SD card. Hit it with joystick press. Choose zip. Install it. Just do a data- factory resetting before you install zip.
I prefer cyanogen mod 7. U may use latest stable or nightly build. Feel free to post any doubt you have. We are happy to help you.
Regards shah.

nope that gold card image will send to ur email..and u need to copy that gold card image to ur sd card...
Well if the hboot is 1.01.0002 with S-OFF then it must be done using xtc clip. So fastboot flashing shouldn't be working. And u don't need a gold card for S-OFF wildfire .
I would just suggest to flash a stock froyo WWE RUU which also removes the carrier bloatware. If ruu proccess gives errors u can copy the romzip from that ruu and use it with pc49img process from hboot menu. And ofcourse fat32 memory card is must for pc49img process

Hey can you explain what happened now? You said that yours is working now before 2 days. ( in second last post). So what happened now? What have you tried with your phone?
And...
So the gold card question, let me explain.
Gold card is just a patch tool, with the help of which you can unlock HTC boot loader , or in detail, you can unlock HTC 's boot loader protection(that's what we call as s-off) , which is commenly locked( that's we call as s-on) , for a user mode phone( a phone that is for sale to normal user), and it is done so because a normal user never need a root permission, over clocking etc. Also user defined kernal, rom, radio updates unless HTC provide them with updates.( and of cource to protect their device and its custom os made by HTC.
So being an s-off device, we can say in simple, unleash the potential of android.( that's what i said, make the device yours and not HTC 's).
And s-off. In can be done using many ways, find them in topic " complete wildfire index " , one of which is using goldcard method. It is also explained in topic/ stickies " downgrade hboot to xxxx". You can download an attached file called buzz downgrade from that topic, and its what you all need.
And about ruu flashing, i think its not a safe one for you, Coz your phone is a3335? Right? If so, original ruu flashing may cause problems with network( called as radio problems), so you can use custom/ safe ruu, instead. Which contains no radio image, check " complete wildfire index" else go for custom os like cm7.
But before all you should mention what you need.
1) r u trying to put custom os, or do you need original os?
2) do you want your phone to be a true android gadget, or just normal phone which is provided by HTC?
3) what kind of user r u? Normal user or a tech junky?
4) r u satisfied with android 2.2 or need 2.3?
Get us the answers, along with your current boot menu( where you find recovery option) details. So that we can help you properly.
That's all dude. Its 2.30 am here in India, so i should wish myself a good night, swtdrmz. Cu ltr.

Oops. Completely missed that point, sorry.
But since the phone is S-OFF one can just flash the system.img and boot.img alone from wwe ruu to remove the carrier bloat and to continue on the HTC stock rom (only if u wish to). Same pc49img process here but with only system.img and boot.img along with android-info.txt .

now im lost where do i fine the right one to use do you know how many there are out there this phone is doing my head in i try to flash the system.img and the boot.img and a stock rom and still nothing im ready to give up to be honest
Have you installed clockwork mod recovery? If not do it first. Use fastboot flash from windows or linux, then download latest cyanogen mod nightly and put it in your sd. Then use install zip option from cwm recovery to install cm7. Done. Its what you want. No radio harm will be done unless you flash a radio using any methods.
All info will be available on thread" complete wild fire index" in this forum. Tools, recovery, how to, rom, and every thing else are available in that thread.

No expert but looks like you have an empty sdcard and system.I think you need to get a rom onto your sdcard (cm7 good choice) and then through recovery apply the rom. Zip and reboot after. DONT DO A WIPE.the telestra screen is just a splash screen which will always load before the system searches for data to load, next would be boot loading screen but yours by the looks and sounds of things does not achieve!! Probably cos its not present due to not having a rom installed.hope I helped if not best of luck. Members are very helpful here and cos you can access hboot I am 99% sure this will be fixed for you. Regards Slymobi.

i have a rom on my sd card but the thing keeps saying FAILED? NO SUCH FILE FOUND ?
Download this: http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...5.55.24H_3.35.20.10_release_160191_signed.exe
Enter HBOOT.
Wait until it finishes trying to load a zip file.
Choose FASTBOOT to enter FASTBOOT USB mode.
Run the downloaded file.
It should then install the original HTC rom.
Or maybe try PC49IMG method if you haven't already?
On your PC click start and type in the search box %temp%,
Keep your eye on this folder and doubleclick your ruu, a new folder should appear in temp folder,
Open it and search for rom.zip,
Copy it to your desktop and rename it to PC49IMG.zip then copy to your SD card and boot into hboot, it should find the zip and install.

@scratches post. I couldn't remember the method but that's exactly how I got my ruu to install so I could revolutionize.

yeah no problem, but do a little reading first cause the steps i give need to make sense to you as well, but this should really be easy and care free. lol
and is your hd2 the tmobile version or EU version, you need to know that, real important when it comes to roms.
what you need to download is as follows, and you can find it in the hd2 android forums:
hspl 4 to unlock phone, 2.15.50 radio, magdlr 1.13, and cwm recovery and the rom you want to run.
1. put your phone in bootloader mode ( while phone is powered down hold volume down and power button) and it will take you to a tri colour screen.
2.with your phone plugged in, it will look and search for the htc drivers and your phone will say usb on the bottom, and when it says that, run the HSPL.exe file you downloaded. this will hack your phone.
3. as soon as your phone reboots hold the volume down and power button to put it back in the tri colour screen. now install the 2.15. radio you downloaded by running the custom ruu, and this will install it for you.
4. now once again, once it completes put your phone into tri coulour screen again, and run magdlr. This will install magdlr for you as well, the bootloader that will replace the original. this is whats going to get you into nand android, or wp7 etc.
5. once thats done phone will reboot, and now it will reboot into magdlr. from here on, you will have to put your phone into usb flasher mode. the phone will install other usb drivers once you do that.
6. once thats done, while on usb flasher mode, install the recovery you downloaded, and using the dft installer, will install the recovery. follow the instructions ins the recovery flasher.
7. when thats down, in magdlr go into ad recovery, and this will put you into the Android recovery.
8. using your volume rocker, go down to mounts/storage, and mount usb/storage, and transfer your rom over to ur sd card.
9. unmount and go into "install zip from sd card." and choose the rom you just transferred. this will take a few minutes, just let it sit till it finishes.
10. once complete go into reboot phone, and watch the magic happen.
Notes: on first boot, usually it will take a lil longer since its running alot of stuff in the background just sit tight and be paitent.
Make sure you download the rom that fits your phone ( tmobile version, or EU)
In the future when you get better and have a little knowledge, using the hd2toolkit is like god, makes alot of things easier with system partions etc...
and like i said please read a little so you can grasp a little knowledge before trying. but you shouldnt really have a problem. Good luck and let me know what else i can do to help and enjoy your new phone!

Nobody will help you more than tecle2595 did above (that was a long and correct answer to your question)
Everything you need to install android without bricking your phone is explained multiple times in details in this forum, and as others said, you even have the luxury to watch youtube videos.
All people here were noobs the first time they joined XDA, and most of us spent hours to decypher the help tutorials. I know it's very hard but you absolutely need to understand all of it if you want to move to android custom roms... otherwhise you'll keep on asking questions on the forum and you'll get stuck at a certain point.
This thread is a good start
Keep on reading the tutorials until you get them, than follow exactly the procedures, and it's guaranteed that you won't brick your phone !

You will never brick your phone by installing software from the Android market, so don't worry about that. In fact, you can't brick an EU HD2 at all as far as I know.
Some things I couldn't live without are:
SetCPU - allows you to control the speed of your CPU whilst performing different tasks.
Titanium Backup - as the name suggests, is a backup tool. Can't count how many times I've used it and my backups have saved my ass.
Juice Defender - Others say it isn't useful, I personally find it helps
Current Widget - Gives you your battery drain, really helps me tell when something's wrong and an app is draining the battery too much
3G watchdog - Measures your 3G usage and warns you if you get near your limit
(For AOSP/CM7) GO Launcher - IMO the best launcher in the market
Dolphin Browser - IMO the best browser in the market
(For AOSP/CM7) ExDialer + Contacts - Stock CM7 dialer isn't as good as this one
Can't think of any more that I really need, so I hope this helps you
