Mytouch 4g stuck at boot.. - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have this brand new Mytouch 4g black, used it for a couple of days and did a factory reset. It booted up fine after that. We were out of town a couple of days during which I powered off the phone.
When we came back try to power up, the phone got stuck at the hboot screen(with geen, red letters), I did factory reset like 10 times and still stuck in the same screen and not booting up. Can anyone help me what's going on with my phone. Is this a software issue or a something wrong with the phone?
thanks in advance,
TZ

Please post questions in Q&A section

Isn't this the Q&A section?

Did you root you phone? If so, then you need to do a complete wipe through recovery.
If you're stock - go back to the store you bought it from and have them replace the device, something is borked.

Hi,
Here's my situation. I have bought this phone outside T-Mobile and so they have disagreed to give me an exchange. The only options I have now is to either figure out myself if the phone can be somehow fixed or sell the phone for parts on ebay. This was running on stock(unrooted) and was working fine before this happened.
Here's the screen shot of phone where it's getting stuck, can anyone advice me if this can be reflashed?
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/PL6S5m9nSQ4LCs_4Cwjqdw?feat=directlink
No matter what option I select and click, it's coming back to the same screen and getting stuck.
Thanks for all of your suggestions,
TZ

I'm taking a stab in the dark here, but maybe your volume down button is stuck?
and its sending the phone into hboot every time?

Nope I've checked that, the volume buttons are good. Also when I hooked the USb cable to computer(windows 7), the Windows is recognizing it and installed the HTC boot loader. Can reflashing with stock kernel helps? If so, how to do that?

Maybe try flashing one of the roms in the dev section?

Not going to fly, S-ON here. I still think it may be the volume button though. Did you try running
Code:
fastboot reboot
See what that does.

Can you tell me if that command works on windows 7 from command prompt? Do I need to have android sdk installed or any other soiftware?

Yes, you need adb installed with fastboot binary.
You need to read THIS guide.

The thread originates in another section. They are just kind enough to move it quickly to the correct section.

As far to the best of my knowledge, I have posed the question in Q&A section to start with.

I did try the "flashboot reboot" command and the phone rebooted and came back to the same screen.
thanks.

Is there anyway he can get a boot log? to see why it goes into hboot?

Also it is recognizing my sd card...is there any way that I can flash a rom from sd card? Another thing to confess that before it goes into limbo mode, I've noticed some moisture around the phone.

I bought my phone off craigslist and TMO has already exchanged it once. Trying calling and getting a different rep. The phone has a 1 year warranty. Try calling HTC also.

Thanks for your suggestion, I've tried with the T-Mobile folks and gave up. The only problem is that I am currently not a customer of T-Mobile!

Ah well that makes a difference. You might try HTC.

Losing ADB Device when going into recovery

So ADB was working (I thought?) and ADB recognizes my phone when I just plug it in, but when I go to do the steps for rooting, it no longer recognizes it.
I got it to say offline ONCE after the loop, but the on the unplug re-plug, it went away. I'm bummed...
cmon now http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703429
You must have misread my post. I've looked thoroughly through that post, actually.
What I am needing help with is after that loop, going from offline in ADB to recovery...
thanks!

ITs not recognizing your phone when in recovery thought correct? if so thats the same thing discussed there. If it did recognize it as offline in recovery then do as eugene said.

it needs to stick to offline, not just say it onec or twice. itll say offline many times not just once then disappear. Once it does it and sticks, it doesnt turn off, you dont need to rush and hit ctrl c
I'm having a issue that's somewhat related. I have a tmo mts3g and I had it rooted with no issues following the instructions provided in eugene's previous posts on the matter. Tmobile recently dropped a OTA update for 2.1 and it relocked my phone. Now that I'm trying to reroot it I'm having issues getting the phone to be adb online in recovery mode. I do adb reboot recovery and when it starts I have the loop going and I have no problem getting it to say "device offline" but when I unplug the device (no matter how long I wait) and plug it back in it still remains in "offline" status under adb devices. I've heard about driver issues and all kinds of other madness but I'm using the same computer that I used when I rooted it previously. My question is; is this something tmobile might have fixed in their ota update and am I just wasting my time continuing to try this method? If not i'm more than happy to continue to try but not if it's with no point.
Thing is you did the OTA update, so instead of following the old guide, you follow the one in the rom bible in the development section. Hope that helps.

Yeah, I found my way there eventually. I got it all straightened out and currently on Eugene's MyFroyo6 with no complaints. Thanks

(Help Needed) I think I BRICKED my phone

Hey guys,
I've been reading a lot of the threads and it's pretty awesome how helpful everyone is. Could someone try and help me?
Here's what I've done. I started with a new Evo.
**Rooting Method**
-downloaded PC36IMG.Zip & evorecovery from Toastcfh
-Copied PC36IMG.Zip to SD card on phone
-While in bootloader, I started the update and rebooted
-It powered on, I removed the PC36IMG.Zip file from the SD card
-I powered it off and back on.
**Auto Recovery Method**
-I donated money for the "ROM Manager" by ClockworkMod and installed
-Then I selected "reboot into Recovery" and Powered off the phone
-I powered back up and nothing seemed to be different about the phone. I don’t get how I’m supposed to know it’s rooted.
ANYWAYS THAT’S THE LEAST OF MY PROBLEMS NOW
I did the Auto Recovery Method steps again and now IT WON’T TURN ON NO MATTER WHAT MODE.
I tried:
Taking out the battery, taking out the SD card, tried starting it in bootloader (vol down + power).
IS MY PHONE A BRICK NOW?
If so how can I fix this and if I can’t fix it, how do I return it without showing I voided my warranty? I’d prefer fixing it if I can.
1st check and make sure your batt. Didn't die

if your phone doesn't doesn't turn on at all, there is no way to tell you voided the warranty. However, it is extremely difficult to brick these phones if you don't flash gsm roms/radios.
Make sure the battery isn't dead.
yes, and always do this stuff with the charger plugged in when flashing roms.
Does the Orange(not full)/ Green(Full) charing LED come on at the top of the phone when it is plugged in? If so charge it til green and try again.
moved to general forum.
so it won't even show the htc evo 4g bootscreern? try plugging it in the computer and try adb shell on it with EVO-recovery.zip to see if it connects. If it does, reboot recovery.
Use the RUU..
No lights at all. It's like there isn't a battery in the phone.
Someone suggested the battery might have went out. Shouldn't it still turn on or show an orange light with the plug. I think it should still turn on even without a battery when it's plugged in. ??
HOLD UP!!
WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME i TOOK THE BATTERY OUT AND WHEN i GOT HOME i PUT IT BACK IN AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. I STILL NEED TO FIX THE WHOLE ROOT THING.
How do I know if I rooted it (part 1)?

Try to boot the phone into recovery using the evo recover.zip in part one
Rename or remove the pci.img w.e from your sd
Turn the phone off hold down vol. Down and power let it check click down on volume then click power button and boot into recovery then.....
download it unzip it onto your desktop open it up right click on recovery.bat if you on Windows click run. as admin if the screen goes up and just goes away then just click on recovery.bat normally you may have to click on it a few times if it runs and doesn't boot into rec. The 1st time.
The reason it didn't boot is because the "internal memory" had to be "reset", the only "real" way to do that is to take out the battery and wait about 1 minute, then snap it back in and boot up. - Correct me if I'm wrong about that.
So... My theory would be that if It had not needed to been reset to boot up, then It didn't Root... ??
Ok, that sounds logit. But, if you can entertain my questions just a little longer?
What is the rooting going to do to my phone? And what is the NAND Uprotect going to do?

Install Terminal Emulator from the Market (free). Launch the terminal, and enter 'su' and press enter. You should be at a root prompt (#). Confirm by typing 'id'; It should return 'uid=0(root) gid=0(root)'

Soft brick installing GingerbreadlatinIME.zip

I just tried flashing the Gingerbreadime.zip and followed the directions to the letter and I experienced my first soft brick. The phone went into a boot loop at the mytouch screen. Luckily I was able to go into Recovery and restored the backup I had made after rooting and turning s=off. It appears to have restored okay as I still have root etc. Does anyone have any idea how or why this happened ? This zip was posted in Droid-Life and was advertised as good for all android 2.2 devices. I have never used adb but have it set up on my phone so I guess I had better get more familiar with it. I have flashed my Vibrant numerous times using Odin and Rom manager but I don't believe that there is a similar program for the Mt4g (Odin that is) I guess I have been spoiled by my Vibrant as it seems to have more options to recover with and are easier to use from what I can tell. I do love this MT4g though It is probably the best all around phone I have ever owned. Any and all info and help is greatly appreciated.:
to my knowledge there has been no gingerbread port for our device yet. Your lucky you didn't brick your device.

There are people experiencing the same thing in the Nexus forum. Personally I would stay away from anything that is not specifically built for this phone as its a completely different OS than Vanilla or Moto Droid or etc. etc.

I sure intend to and I should have got on this forum before I even attempted to flash it. Right now everything seems fine except I cannot get into recovery only clockworkimode recovery. I am holding down the volume down button and pressing the power button at the same time and the device just reboots. Any ideas and what could be causing that? I am embarassed to say that my ignorance that pushed me to flash that zip is probably at the root of it. Any steps that I can take to enable me to get into stock recovery to check and make sure S=off?
Edit: Just pulled battery and sim card and than put them back in and the device went into stock recovery and s=off so I hope that all is okay and I did not create some ghosts that will show up when I attempt to flash a rom later on.
Please post questions in Q&A section.
I did the same thing. I flashed the .zip file from droid life forum and got a success message when I installed it through recovery and mine never bootlooped. I didn't get the gingerbread keyboard but it didn't bootloop either

I think you mean bootloader? You only have 1 recovery. If you flashed clockwork you no longer have stock recovery. Vol Down + Pwr gets you to bootloader or SPL where it shows S=off.
I did not flash the zip (sounds like an overkill to flash a zip for new KB). I ADB pushed both files and got a FC on multi-touch KB... oh well, I like HTC_IME better anyway

make sure fastboot is checked off otherwise you cant get into the bootloader. to make sure it is off go to: menu, settings, applications and uncheck fastboot. you're good to go then. to get into recovery, you can do it thru bootloader or by opening up rom manager and clicking on the "reboot to recovery" option

the website was not specific enough. the port at the current moment is for motorola droid devices. they should have been more specific instead of saying any rooted 2.2 android phone. even if you do get it on your phone, its only going to force close every time you try and type something. thats what happened to me, so after about 24 hours i said **** it and removed it. swype in my opinion is better anyway. im trying to port the g2 swype to our phone so we can have a swype with a mic on the keyboard. oddly, ours didnt come with one.

Brick phone maybe?.. Question for Dev

So I got a htc mytouch 4g And it has that phone icon with a triangle and exclamtion mark. I dont know anything about this phone since I have a att captivate From what I read is that if you have recovery you might be able to do it.
Also when I plug in the usb I go into recover and I Get a fasboot screen and other sorts of menus i have put a pd15img.zip in my external sd card and it loads installs It I guess but still boots into the same Icon.
from what I also read is that you can fix this by loading a stock rom pushing into your sdcard via adb but make sure is name update.zip but when I do that I get Invalid Operation.
when in recovery I have this message E:cant't open /cache/recovery/command also phone boots right into that icon.
I assume this is a soft brick since I get into recover and the other fasboot menu when I plug in USB any help is appreciated
This is my first time with a phone like this so I'm doing what I would normaly do with a captivate ish
I'm sorry for posting in wrong section. Cant fine the Delete option mods delete if possible I posted in QA
Wrong place ro poat your question. Post in Q&A please.
Indeed, wrong section, but we can wrap this up quickly. Unfortunately, that's not a soft brick, but a hard brick. Those cache errors in recovery indicate that you have a bad eMMC chip. No one has yet been able to recover the device once the eMMC goes.
It's indeed not a Development thread whatsoever, but I've answered you in the correct thread. Since you have triangle icon with exclamation mark, as people here didn't put attention, you're in the stock recovery, and eMMC failures most likely don't apply, it's a "normal" error.

When I originally responded to this thread, the OP had not yet posted his screenshot in the other thread, so I didn't know the phone was not rooted and that the cache errors were occurring in stock recovery, not ClockworkMod.
No offense meant whatsoever, my apologies if it sounded something I didn't mean. If I didn't start reading with the other thread - I probably wouldn't put attention to that detail either.

Stuck at HTC screen, won't boot

Hello All,
I have run into a problem with my Heroc not wanting to boot. Some background:
ROM: CM7
Kernal: Jaybob's recent Kernal
Mods: Firerats
All was fine and dandy until yesterday, when I decided to reboot the phone (with a full battery charge). The phone shutoff and when restarted was stuck at the HTC screen. I've tried several times to get into recovery but it hangs at the HTC Screen.
I can enter Fastboot/Hboot. I did some digging and tried to unroot by using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988741
Method 1, loading the imaging on the sd root and loading. Everything loaded fine but when I reboot it still hangs at the HTC screen. I have not tried to RUU being that I am on a Mac and don't have access to a PC at the moment. So RUU will be done later tonight hopefully, but I don't expect different results.
It seems like I have some messed up memory and its not allowing me to boot. Does anyone know of a fix? I'm not desperate because its time for an upgrade. I just wanted to hold off on using it until January when Sprint holds their press conference, assuming its an Android device. I'd like to see what I could get versus the phones on the market now.
Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance

You definitely need to do an RUU. No way around it. know it sucks starting fresh again but it'll solve all these problems you have. If your s-off you can also do the RUU from Hboot but it's better to do it from PC as I have learned. Good luck man.
thanks a lot! om going to give it a try later tonight when i have access to a pc. Im not so much worried about starting fresh than I am losing the phone and using my upgrade now... I have a curve laying around and started to thing about using that for a while until I see something I like.
i will report back tonight or tomorrow when i am up and running again.

Thanks. I will give it a look.
I read through the thread and it looks like you passed the black htc screen and got to the white one. I can't get passed the black and adb doesn't pick up the phone at this point. I'm still waiting to try the RUU and see if HTC sync picks up the device.
Very resourceful thread and I'll be sure to give all the suggestions a try before giving up.
HTC sync won't pick up the device and I don't think any other option will work since I don't have ADB access. I'm just gonna bite the bullet and look into a replacement.

i had same kinda deal from a bad radio flash
if you still have fastboot do
"fastboot erase system -w"
"fastboot oem boot heroc.hboot-1.46.2000.zip"
you may need to rename the file to HBOOT.
if that dose not work unzip the file take the hboot img and place on sdcard and place where your fastboot files are like in android/platform-tools.
this made a deference for me.
then try fastboot flash img hboot.img
this is what i went through here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086125
good luck if i can help let me know.
Thanks for the help oostah. I haven't been able to get ADB to recognize the device. When I get home I'll try it again and remove the hboot as suggested and give that a try.
Now that ICS is in beta for the Heroc my phone decides to crap out on me and I can't enjoy the hard work put in by the developers. Nonetheless, I am much appreciative of all the support put into the Heroc and have learned a lot from this community
I'll report back tonight with my results.

Now that ICS is in beta for the Heroc my phone decides to crap out on me and I can't enjoy the hard work put in by the developers. Nonetheless, I am much appreciative of all the support put into the Heroc and have learned a lot from this community
I'll report back tonight with my results.

you are welcome i have been there before.
your phone may not recognize ADB but it may still take fastboot commands. that was one thing that drove me crazy is that i could fastboot but not adb. let us all know how it goes.
I did "fastboot-mac devices" and got my device to show up, so it registered. however, when I go to erase system I get an error, "remote: not allowed". The same occurred when trying to flash the .zip and img files separately as suggested . At one point the devices started vibrating like crazy and shut off, the led started to blink green. I did get it back into Fastboot, but now it won't turn on.
Thanks for the help though It was already replaced and the new phone should be here tomorrow. I'm just going to miss the Hero since it was my first Android device and I learned a lot in this forum.
Thanks!

do you have a nan back up from a sd card any place like on your pc if so look for your clockworkmod folder look for backups and you should see your backups open one of them you will see
boot
system
data
recovery
sd-ext
cache
they will be img files you can place them on your sd card and fastboot them back to the phone
"fastboot flash img boot.img"
"fastboot flash img system.img"
and so on
or
"fastboot boot img boot.img"
"fastboot boot img system.img"
and so on
or you can let it RIP
good to know. I'll give that a try if I can get it booted. I'm thinking its dead and needs a charge to get back into fastboot. I'd love to get it back up and running as a learning experience more than anything. I wont have time until tomorrow or Thursday . I will report back when I give it a try.
