Okay so I just found out that froyo has been released for the epic (yeah im late).. but I'm kinda confused on how to install it.. i'm a noob now so please help by giving the easiest steps.. I have bakedsnack 1.6 rom and kernel install in my phone and so far what I know is that i have to use odin to install the dk28 update. Question is how do I use it step by step? i checked the acs and viperom thread, so I dont wan't to go through the hassle of rooting my phone again. How can avoid that and use biperom at the same time?
Thank youuuuuu..
There is numerous threads with step by step directions all over this thread. Do some searching and you still find it. You will want to start off by downloading odin. The files you will need are in the same thread to put in odin to flash. Just search, search and search some more and you will be fine.

I have been recently finding that their is a lot more noobs coming here to flash SC 2.6. I also have noticed in order to flash 2.6 they have to go on a scavenger hunt to do so. I think if no one makes a guide on how to flash everything from modem to clockwork then I will.

Hey Guys,
Iam trying to flash my samsung vibrant to a new ROM. But what if I wont like it and want to go back to an original firmware my phone came with? I tried searching answers but there are multiple ones and I cant understand it so figured I ask here. Can I somehow backup my current version or download it so I can go back to just stock firmware that the phone came out the box?
Thanks for your help
You can make a back up with rom manager or you can learn to odin back to stock. Check the stickies or search for more info.

Odin doesn't do backups, you can flash back your stock Froyo rom using it though.
Search in here how to flash back to stock throthroug odin so u can download the proper ROM

In order to make a backup, you need to be rooted, in order to root you need to have an update.zip file on your phone in order for the file to work you need to be on 2.1 firmware, you can probably find the file stickied in the development section, or q/a section.

Odin is the ticket. It doesn't do a backup - it restores your phone to it's fresh out of the box state. There are 2 files you need, but they're easy to find.
But blaqr0d is going to be right - once you start flashing you will only want to go back to stock if you encounter a problem.
Here's a vid I think is very helpful.
OP, please read my stickies in my signature. You will learn a lot and not waste others time.

lol - I dunno, even I spend most of my time running stock roms.
great, thanks guys for all the quick and great responses. it cleared up many of my questions , i read a lot of stuff but wasnt sure. yeah I dont think i will go back to stock but I wanna be prepared just in case.
thanks again!
I have the SCH-I400 (hardware version i400.0.6) , still with stock software:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: S:i400.0.6V.DL17
Kernel version: 2.6.29
Build number: SCH-I400.DL17
I would like to upgrade it to Android 2.2 (or higher) with minimal risk of bricking it.
Where do I start?
Are there special tools that I need?
Is there a difference between "firmware" and "ROM"?
Which is the latest stable firmware/ROM that you can recommend?
Is it possible to try a particular firmware/ROM without replacing the current firmware/ROM?
What do I need to do to save the current stock firmware/ROM so that I can restore it later (if I ever want to).
I am basically clueless at this point, so any tip or link would be very much appreciated.
Thank You!

That's what I did before posting my question but the best I could find was this HOWTO for Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10.
My understanding is that instructions that are good for one brand/model are not necessarily good for another. I couldn't find such a HOWTO for the Samsung Continuum SCH-I400 and I really don't want to brick my phone just to find out that I missed or misunderstood a step. Can you help?
For example, I found in this thread a reference to something called odin:
Is this the recommended way to flash the Samsung Continuum SCH-I400?
Is v1.85 the latest & greatest?
Is it possible to try a particular version without flashing it? (I have almost 8GB of free SD space)
Do I have to root the device before attempting any firmware trial or flash?
Just look in the development section
Literally all of your questions have been answered throughout the forum..
1. you'll want to download odin (or heimdall if you're on mac/linux)
2. firmware is the version your phone is running, and a ROM is a custom OS. for example, you're firmware is 2.1-update1. however, you are using the stock ROM. for the samsung continuum, as far as i know there is only one other ROM on 2.1-update1 (which is the firmware) and that's the debinged/debloated DL17 ROM (which is the custom OS).
3. just go through the development system and look through the ROM's and look at the comments to see if there are any bugs. currently the latest firmware is 2.2 but i don't know if there are any bugs.
4. not quite sure what you mean by that
5. what you're talking about is a nandroid backup. to do a nandroid backup you have to get clockwork recovery. just check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057072

He is talking about running a ROM off his SD card. That's probably the one unanswered question. From what I know, not you can't.
You have a LOT of reading and research to do before you're ready to do any of this stuff. Read through the Android Development sub-forum.... Then read it again... if anything is confusing, read it again. You can SERIOUSLY mess up your phone if you don't know what you're doing... Once you understand it all, then try it out.
My advice would be to first do research on the terminology. Once you know what words like flash, rom, odin, cwm, cwm cyan vs. yellow, recovery, and what things like a tar.md5, and update.zip, mean and do, it will be a lot easier to understand what you are reading. Google is your friend. Most of what I've learned has come from there. Also, peruse different forums. I understand that this one can get a little techincal for a noob. I still have to scratch my head about half of the time and think about what I'm reading before it makes sense. It will come, slowly. Just save yourself a lot of headache, and read read read, and if you have ANY doubts, find the answer BEFORE you start the process.
This video helps a lot with cwm, and flashing via odin

Start by googling root and cintinuum and look for addictivetips tutorial and then look for how to install clockwork mod recovery (this was the difficult part imo) should also be at addictivetips. By time your done you should at least be familliar with programs involved and asking troublshoot Q's instead of general "how do I" Q's......

TUT
There is a great tutorial on getting to 2.2.2 in the EC07 clean thread in development.
The quickest method ive use so far (i am newbie 2 rootin etc) is download the tool to root 'superoneclick' then youl have to search for the correct flash tool for your device, then download cwm recovery to backup/restore and install your 'mod rom'. Theres some very good roms about on this site,im only on a x1o mini pro came with 2.1 and s.e refused to release any futher updates 4 this model!but its now running either 2.3.9 or 2.3.5 quite smoothly ..made up ,so u should be able to find and try later than 2.3 and choose which rom you prefer.

well you dont have to start by rooting your phone... rooted roms flashed by odin work on stock 2.1 thats how i did it... i used superoneclick only once, on ec07 stock. havent had to since, cause i flashed roms with odin/cwm that are rooted and deodexed.
Hey guys i updated to 2.3.3
i thot my root was still good cause i can still install apps from sd..
so recently i downloaded root toolbox..
when i opened it it says please root device before use...
so googled 2.3.3 fascinate root..
i tried super one click no success..
so i found a tutorial that uses odin..
so it seemed to have worked but the phone did not stop rebooting?
so flash it back with factory ROM found on the same page of tutorial..all good..
tried to re install superuser..still the same?
is this version rootable or what??
Fascinate from telus 2.3.3 kernel 2.6.35.7-t959tlkg2
This can be answered with research.
Please refrain from posting questions in the General section. Use Q&A.

2.3 is rootable but the easiest method is just to flash an already rooted rom (such as pwgb) to your phone.
and yes, please take a minute to familiarize yourslf with the forum rules. Thank you.
I'm updating my wife's rooted Epic from 2.2.1 to the latest EL30 Gingerbread release and am not seeing a thread that fully addresses the process here. I've been in HTC land for the past year and the whole odin/pit thing is completely greek to me, so I'm really concerned with making sure I don't brick her phone and get yelled at for spending 3 hours trying to fix what I just did
Are these steps correct?
1. Odin/Pit/Tar official EL30
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
2. Update CWM to 5.0.2.7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357655
3. Flash new ROM (Looking at SleeperROM)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465628&highlight=sleeper
I'm assuming that the new CWM has a one-click root method like before, but I cannot find the details in the thread. If not, do the instructions in the "Rooting EI22 after OTA or Google update [11/10]" still apply where I have to download the ACS recovery, or is there an easier method that I haven't found?
I apologize for the noobish post and I'm sure this info is in here somewhere, unfortunately after an hour of searching around I haven't found an updated root/upgrade method that makes this brainless.
Thanks

Your steps are correct.
Basically ODIN the official EL30 tar.
Then ODIN the tar version of CWM5.
This will automatically root your phone and install CWM5.
After that you can flash custom roms of your liking.
I would suggest CM9 beta as it is stable if you use your phone for basic stuff like calling/internet surfing, GPS and other minor tasks.

Thanks. I'll probably go this route just to ensure that the radio (etc) flashes correctly. However I'll definitely skip CM9 beta until it's at least RC; wife's phone means no fun...she just don't care
***Quick question, to ODIN the tar version of CWM5 are there any special configurations in ODIN to be aware of?
For those that may follow:
First, getting to stock EL30:

Then ROM Manager (First Download HERE):
Then the next answer to ***
Correct. Make sure the md5's match. So everything will go smooth. You will wanna go to the link in qbking77 video for how to flash cwm 5.0.2.7. I believe is the right one. So you will use odin. Flash the tar. Make sure only reboot is checked. If you are coming from 2.2. And or a bml. Rom. Which. As you was saying it sounds like you are. I don't remeber which slot you put the cwm tar. In. But the video will guide you. . His videos. Comes in handy. If you need any more help. A lot of people will be more then happy to help. Further.
