All in one guide request - Fascinate General

I have been recently finding that their is a lot more noobs coming here to flash SC 2.6. I also have noticed in order to flash 2.6 they have to go on a scavenger hunt to do so. I think if no one makes a guide on how to flash everything from modem to clockwork then I will.

There are already guides available for this...
See here to get you started and here for everything else

This guide starts from rooting all the way to EB01.

[Q] Flashing a ROM

Hey Guys,
I have the Samsung Fascinate (verizon). I rooted the phone using the SuperOneClick method and it worked fine. I have Superuser in my apps area. I went into Market and downloaded ROM Manager and then did the Flash Recovery and chose Fascinate. Here is where I get a little confused. I see ROMs on here like Super Clean DL09. I have DL09 already and I just want to flash the ROM but then I see things that you need to flash the radio and kernel with ODIN. I have gone through the stickies but I am a little leary at this point. Any detailed step by step on how to do the radio and kernel and then ROM...or can I just flash the ROM and be fine? Any clarification would be great.

You need to flash ClockworkMod through Odin, and then install Clockworkmod through Rom Manager. After all of that, then you can flash Roms through Rom Manager or you manually boot into Clockworkmod recovery and install that way. You don't flash kernels or roms through odin. You flash through clockworkmod. You don't need to worry about the radio as you already have the correct one unless you are planning on trying Dj05 roms/kernels in which case you would need to flash a Dj05 modem.
Keep reading through threads. There's plenty of directions redgarding flashing CWM. Before you start flashing away, make sure you also read up on what to do if you mess up your phone. It would be wise of you to both make a nandroid backup through CWM and to download a complete stock image of dl09 so you can restore in the event you screw up your phone. Just do some more reading so you are prepared.

SOTK,
Here is a link for the The Unlockr. This is where I got the information from and so far it seems to be correct. You said i have to flash clockwork through Odin...they don't mention it there. Not undermining...just trying to make sense of everything. I am going to do a backup (thanks for the reminder). I was just unsure about the radio and kernel stuff. Let me know what you think about this info here at the link

You can try and do a back up all you want but until you flash clock work mod via odin you will not have any success. As he stated (or she), you do not need to flash the radio as long as you stay on dl09 roms only. Adrynalyne has provided many kernels for us dl09 users in the development section of our phone.
EDIT: follow this link to a TEE and you'll be fine

Interesting site. I prefer xda and android central. The site you gave me didn't seem to be fascinate specific which makes me uncomfortable. There is much better information here and at android central.
Yes, they didn't mention flashing CWM through odin which is wrong. You must do that before you can start flashing roms (unless there is some super new procedure I know nothing about which is unlikely or would have read about it here).

Powell730 and SOTK,
I flashed Clockwork using ODIN...everything went great. Afterwards I did a cold start and held the vol buttons while hitting the power...came right up for me. I performed a backup right away. Just wanted to thank you all again for the clarifications and help. One thing I noticed....since I did this now my soft keys no longer do haptic feedback on them. I checked the settings and it's enabled but still don't feel anything when I hit them.

Awesome! Glad you got it figured out. Have fun flashing Roms. It's addicting!
Once you flash a DL09 kernel your haptic will come back.

What he said.. When you flashed cwm it installed a di01 kernel on your phone, you'll need to flash a dl09 kernel and you'll get your haptic feedback back.

I'm a total noob and need some help!!

I completely new to the whole flashing and custom rom thing. I've never tried anything like it and don't know much about it. The closest I've come to hacking or rooting my Vibrant phone is with the OCLF app. Now, I too have been patiently waiting for Froyo to come out and for some reason when it did come out I was hesitant to get it. I wanted to see what people were saying about it before I downloaded and installed it. So far from what I'm seeing, its not all its cracked up to be and it seems like Froyo for the Vibrant is "meh" for most. This is a bummer to me but I kept hearing about using a custom and its advantages. Thankfully I bumped into a very useful thread posted by xriderx66 on his reviews on some of the roms out now. Based on what he said, I'm looking to flashing my phone to the Bionix-V Rom by Team Whiskey. Problem is I have no idea how to get started. What do I need to do to flash my phone? Any program I need to download first? How do I backup my files? I'm such a noob at this its funny but I'm willing to take the risk and experience this phone the way it should be experienced. If someone can post a link showing a step by step on how to do the whole thing I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance
Go to the development thread and browse through the stickies. Reading and more reading should be the first two things you do. Pay attention to anything relating to odin.

But everything I have done up to this point was learned in the Noob Guide he linked. Its like vibrant flashing for dummies.

Help with flashing CM7 on my fascinate (Using COMROM)

I am using comrom 2.1, and i cant seem to find a guide to help me flash the new cm7. If anyone cant point me to a thread, or list in detail here what to do, we can try to make a sticky, cause im sure there are a ton of people just as confused as me . Thanks!

This is one of the first threads you'll (currently) see in the dev section as well as the 3rd result in a general search for "CM7, fascinate." Are you SURE you looked before posting? Anyways, follow those instructions and you should be golden. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, but yes ive been through those threads already, and it does not seem clear to me. Im looking for more of a guide to help me through, almost like whats happening with the telnus fascinate, many guides are popping up to help people with flashing.

I approve of this simple guide.
I did it myself and worked perfectly...of course you should download the 7/18 update and flash that instead of 7/4 rom referenced on the guide.
You might also want to look further down the CM7 Thread. There have been a bunch of ROM/kernel updates from what i've read. Some fixing issues you might have from 7/18 build.

No disrespect intended here, but I recommend actively researching anything you find confusing in there; same applies for CM7 in general. Believe me, I understand where you're coming from and it took a couple months of lurking around the dev section before I was comfortable enough to even make my first post!
Having said that, I went to CM7 from UKB2.1 and may be able to assist. Which details have you confused / nervous?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
I also understand where you are at, people just asking questions and not looking. I just had confusion with the whole process. But i have it installed now! but one problem, i have no recovery :/ . I guess installing it removed it?
Are you using the 3-button method? It's an adjustment, but that method is absent from CM7. You can only get there via adb or (much more simply) by selecting Reboot from the power button menu. You will then be given the choice to reboot into recovery.
EDIT: To clarify, this also means that you can no longer do a cold boot into recovery; if for some reason the Rom won't boot, your only real options are adb (only if you know EXACTLY what you're doing) or using Odin to return to stock and starting over from scratch.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
Its absent from holding the power button aswell. I found out that i have to go to Rom manager and then boot into recovery that way. Thanks for the help everyone!
YMMV, but my understanding is that Rom Manager still doesn't play nice with the Fascinate. Personally, it's given me nothing but trouble regardless of setup.
Don't get me wrong, Koush has done a lot for Android development in general and I'm not knocking his work. However, the majority of feedback on Rom Manager I've seen from Fascinate users has been overwhelmingly negative.
EDIT: Make sure that Power Prompt is enabled. You will find it in Settings -> Cyanogenmod Settings -> Interface

Here are the exact steps I did today.
Flashed Completely back to stock
reference: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178544
Note: I just downloaded the file he included.
1. Odined the MD5 file from the aforementioned file
note: LET YOUR PHONE COMPLETELY BOOT UP BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE
your phone will boot as stock/unrooted/****cake
2. Odined Fixed CWM4 recovery *.tar file
You can download this recovery from jt's original post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116424
3. Boot to recovery using 3-button method (volume up&down + power [holding until recovery shows up])
4. Flashed 7/26 CM7 (updated by imnuts)
reference: http://imnuts.net/quXv55
5. Flashed GApps found in jt's post (link from step2)
6. Flashed DockandUSBAudio fix found in jt's post (link from step2)
7. Chose reboot system
8. $$
FYI: the Dock and audio usb fix contains the kernel by jt. I found the 7/26 build to be a bit more buggy (signal animation is messed up). at least call speaker now works. But ultimately i re-flashed the 7/24 build from imnuts and flashed the dockusbaudio fix to snag jt's kernel. (sum it up: im running the 7/24 build with dockusbaudio fix)
I state the following not as an insult, but as honest advice:
If you don't feel comfortable following the guide in jt's CM7 thread, you need to do more research on roms and kernels first. There shouldn't be any guesswork to it as long as one has an understanding of the steps involved, what each step does, and why it's necessary.
Yes, it is possible to "get by" with only a functional understanding of of how to flash things, for example, but that's why people end up with bricks after, say, flashing an Amend script in an Edify-only recovery.

Thanks for putting together this extra guide. I have been reading through the threads and know how easy it is to get lost on what information applies and what doesn't as things evolve.

Quick nod if I'm in the right direction here...

I'm updating my wife's rooted Epic from 2.2.1 to the latest EL30 Gingerbread release and am not seeing a thread that fully addresses the process here. I've been in HTC land for the past year and the whole odin/pit thing is completely greek to me, so I'm really concerned with making sure I don't brick her phone and get yelled at for spending 3 hours trying to fix what I just did
Are these steps correct?
1. Odin/Pit/Tar official EL30
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
2. Update CWM to 5.0.2.7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357655
3. Flash new ROM (Looking at SleeperROM)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465628&highlight=sleeper
I'm assuming that the new CWM has a one-click root method like before, but I cannot find the details in the thread. If not, do the instructions in the "Rooting EI22 after OTA or Google update [11/10]" still apply where I have to download the ACS recovery, or is there an easier method that I haven't found?
I apologize for the noobish post and I'm sure this info is in here somewhere, unfortunately after an hour of searching around I haven't found an updated root/upgrade method that makes this brainless.
Thanks

Your steps are correct.
Basically ODIN the official EL30 tar.
Then ODIN the tar version of CWM5.
This will automatically root your phone and install CWM5.
After that you can flash custom roms of your liking.
I would suggest CM9 beta as it is stable if you use your phone for basic stuff like calling/internet surfing, GPS and other minor tasks.

Thanks. I'll probably go this route just to ensure that the radio (etc) flashes correctly. However I'll definitely skip CM9 beta until it's at least RC; wife's phone means no fun...she just don't care
***Quick question, to ODIN the tar version of CWM5 are there any special configurations in ODIN to be aware of?

Correct. Make sure the md5's match. So everything will go smooth. You will wanna go to the link in qbking77 video for how to flash cwm 5.0.2.7. I believe is the right one. So you will use odin. Flash the tar. Make sure only reboot is checked. If you are coming from 2.2. And or a bml. Rom. Which. As you was saying it sounds like you are. I don't remeber which slot you put the cwm tar. In. But the video will guide you. . His videos. Comes in handy. If you need any more help. A lot of people will be more then happy to help. Further.

So I have the latest stock upgrades but was tring to flash this puppy last night. Bloatware is gone but I do not see that the rom took. I was trying to load muini or something like that, the name escapes me. I thought I followed directions but apparently not well enough. I have ec09 any ideas? The rom u are trying to flash is older than ec09.
Latest is eg04.
So I need to flash eg04, then flash the custom rom. I'll keep digging in the forums and re read posts. I probably missed something. Especially if I thought I was up to date with ec09. Please forgive my noobiness. I will continue to learn and hopefully be able to contribute someday.
Ok, I see that eg04 is gb and nervous about taking the plunge, feel a little too noob for that.

Well the whole (stock-leaked) eg04 rom and instructions are in dev thread. I'm going back to stock unrooted right now so I can test my repacked kernels. Ill pull files to make some odin images. I work in a cpl hours so hopefully can tar em up and get them uploaded tonight
You are awesome. I keep reading threads and doing a lot of googling to learn. I started down this path looking for programming guides as I embarked on some projects for work and started seeing what could be done. Unfortunately, none of my business degree classes were in programing, so I have to learn all that on my own.

Get more comfortable flashing. Cause eg04 has more steps. been too busy to finish what I started on eg04.
I have been working on flashing things through cwm. I like it pretty well because is quick and i can flash without having to be connected to the laptop. I was able to get the everything mod flashed, but prior to that could not get the "..package.zip" file to flash and then the am/pm ticker mod would not flash either. Hololauncher would not load/install so there is still plenty to learn before attempting GB as a install. Any advice is always appreciated.
