Bare With Me.... - Vibrant General

I am coming from a T-Mobile HTC HD2, and I have Unlocked the phone, installed several ROM's and Android Build's, but I am getting bored, so I got a Vibrant now, Do I need to Unlock the Vibrant and Root the phone in order to install a Custom ROM? If so, if you could provide me the link to a program to Root the phone, and Unlock the phone, would be much appreciated, and I can go from there, thank you. Please do not flame this, obviously I know what I am talking about.

Read the bible and all questions will be answered. Basically do not be lazy and do a search its all here the info you need.
Cheers.

that sounds sexual

Anybody notice there are two of these threads?

You do realize you posted the same thread 15 minutes before this one. By the way you are getting flamed in that other thread for not reading sticky threads. They are sticky for a reason. The one in general and the bible have pretty much everything you might want.

doesn't matter
It doesn't matter whether you are a noob or know what u talkin....
Anytime you create a new thread in the Dev section(twice!!) with such a basic question....you are asking for it....search man search!!
Mods please move....

You should be searching, but ignore the a**holes, just in the future make sure you check out all stickies and abuse the search function ( and NEVER double post, because then even I wont feel bad for you)...otherwise you are welcoming the douchebags to come out from under their rocks and prey on fresh meat
to answer your questions, you do not have to "unlock" the phone. Just root the phone in order to obtain Superuser and Busybox. Install "OCLF" from the market, this is the easiest and fastest way to root your device. And from there just read up on ROMs/Mods for yourself to see what you want. Most ROM threads have specific installation instructions, good luck.
This phone is so easy to mod, its silly. However, sometimes it can be TOO easy, in the sense where if someone gets caught up in the simplicity and starts rushing, you may miss a small detail that could cause major setbacks. Its happened to the best of us, it doesnt mean you dont know what youre doing, it justs means your enot reading carefully. So no matter how simple something may seem/sound, always make you read carefully so as to prevent issues that will cause you to post/panic like crazy.

I am coming from an evo 4g and would like to know what odin is/used for. on the evo I only ever had to use adb. is it necessary to have or is it more like htc sync. ie only needed in certain circumstances. thanks in advance for the input

He's exactly right... because this subforum is just starting up, everything needs to be in its appropriate section. It will make everthing easier when this starts to pick up and you need to go back and find something. No one who wants to flash a custom rom wants to read questions about apps. So no hatin involved, lets just put stuff in the appropriate spots

yes i understand that but to the op you really didnt help at all thats what i mean im not saying your wrong at all im just saying help the guy even though he posted in the wrong spot and then ask him to move it cause hes in the wrong section thats all
honestly i was going under the assumtion that odin was some program you had to use to flash roms or something along those lines. How would i go about transfering it to the general section?
none of you are helping at all. if you don't have anything helpful at all to contribute then don't say anything at all. saying stuff like this doesn't belong here isn't helpful at all and all it does is clutter the thread. if it needs to be moved then let a mod decide on that.
as for answering the op's question...
Odin is the program you use to flash phones.
'Odin Multi Downloader v3.95.exe' is used to flash the Samsung Galaxy. It's usually included in firmware packs.
Gunman is trying to help... Ppl need to read the rules and follow them before posting... A simple google search would have answered his question.. I already posted a "read before posting" thread.. Its all the way at the bottom bc ppl are posting incorrectly and in the wrong place

Someone should make a FAQ stickey so hopefully people will see that instead of making threads, just a thought.

when you say firm ware like when you flash new kernals/roms or updating hardware like the radio and such? or do you mean the version of android itself? also do you have to use odin or can you just get a .zip of the firm ware/rom then flash it in recovery mode?
Id say 99.999% of the time no one mods the hardware, the roms are essentially like OS's, and firmware is like a bios, it translates what the rom wants us to do into how the hardware is going to do it.
Yes I realize this is not a perfect analogy, and no offense to the OP, this is just a basic rundown for anyone starting out.
On a Vibrant, using this app-thingy

Odin is a tool used for downloading new rom's or software to the phone. you need to put the phone into download mode to get odin to recognize it. Be very careful as to how you use this software, it can brick your phone if you mess up and don't do it right.

But honestly, Darkside had a point but maybe not presented in the best way. I guess some people are tired of answering the same questions when there are clear posts/threads about it that are also easy to find.
I'm a beginner as well but I tend to look for a solution myself rather than asking. But we are all different I guess.
Such is society. The world is full of people who would prefer to have information hand fed to them. No wonder many people cannot infer from information.

And the part about searching yourself is music to my ears.
yes, maybe i went about it the wrong way, i will admit that...BUT:
I know this isnt my forum, i have no say in anything on here at all...but its depressing having to read the same thing over and over and over - and all these threads do is push the good informative threads off the first couple of pages and makes it very hard to garner good honest information posted by people making a genuine effort to improve things for our phone.
Check the Q&A & General section, count how many ICS threads there are already...all talking about the same thing. Its like all of a sudden theres an influx of new members (probably young guys/girls) who are in a competition to feel part of something, and satisfy this need by posting threads on massive forums like this one without using the search function...that function is there for a reason, its mentioned in the rules and its just common sense to check if what you are about to post is already available...isnt it?
Maybe im completely wrong, maybe im looking at it the wrong way, but i now struggle to find anything of value on this forum because im wading through...well, you get my point....

I am not that clever, but I do know that Search & Read are the most valuable things to use this site. And if I am able to do it, then most can do as well.
I can understand if the Rooting and Flashing of ROMs was explained in a very technical way, but the posters have taken time to do step-by-step instructions. Okay sometimes for noobies it can still be confusing. I guarantee that if they read through that thread then they will have found someone already who asked that question for clarification (which will have been answered).
I am indebted to some very clever folk have developed programs or modified ROMs so that we can root and flash. And also to those who took the time to make the guides for us.
I only wish I knew how to go about learning about developing - it does seem to be a very steep learning curve.

How is he supposed to know what you have posted without reading it. You may have tried searching & reading but there was a problem with actually doing the rooting.
There are a lot of folks on here that English is not their first language, so may need help with following the instructions.
If you have learned to use the best thing on this site - the Search - then his reply was worth it.

Clearly you didn't use the search button, or you'd have found the answer quickly. Or if you bothered to check the stickies for the kernels, or read through the thread.
If the files have already been posted by the developer and confirmed working, why are you asking people if its 'safe'?
And yes, asking people to use the search button is useful, if you even bothered to read the XDA rules.

I have to agree with Olyloh6696 on this one. The advice given was quite acceptable. Everyday new threads are started for no reason when the info is already available. Some people just want to be spoon fed simple information. Maybe they are in a rush to solve their problem and decide why spend hours looking when I can just start a new thread and ask. Only problem is; hours of other peoples time is waisted looking at threads like this one.

There should be CLEAR instructions in the OP of the Blackrose thread. This **** is ridiculous.
What do I need? Do I need the Android SDK? If I do, can I install it on a seperate drive? I don't need ****e clogging up my SSD. No one has stated I need the SDK, hence why I haven't bothered with it. If it is needed, then my point about none of it being CLEAR is reinforced.
Been trying to figure this **** out for hours. Seen countless numbers of posts with people trying to give instructions. I try these things to find that I have missed something because I can't complete a step or some other problem.
And did I mention how helpful the installation video was in the OP? Really good stuff, that.
Any actual help will be appreciated. Gonna jump off the nearest cliff if someone suggests to read through the thread again. Which seems to be the only thing that people like to tell others in these "help" threads.
Cheers.

Hours? When I got my first smartphone many years ago, I spend months lurking around this site trying to take in as much knowledge as I could before even attempting to flash anything. I wanted to make sure that I understood everything I was doing before doing it -- I did not want to blindly follow someone's step by step.

This is much more helpful. My apologies.
If I were the one creating these sorts of things for others (and myself,) I'd very much like it to be as simple as possible for the end-user. I'd like as much support as possible and I would be isolating the majority by making it more difficult than it could be. I shouldn't need a developer's knowledge to be able to take advantage of a developer's work.
I'm sure I just missed something simple. It wasn't the drivers. After I installed them and tried the Blackrose exe again, it stops at "waiting for device." Read through some of the thread, not understanding half of it, as you would expect, and didn't come across anything that could have helped me with my problem.
Any ideas?

I think what you posted above is where the problem is. People here are not creating things here for others. They are developing something, and sharing it with others.
And I guess, you didn't read the comment in the link in my previous post. Otherwise, it probably would have been more clear.

lol, seriously?
There are 956 posts in the Blackrose thread alone. Expecting someone to read EVERY single post and absorb all of that information at one time is a bit proposterous. I'd bet it'd take a good 3-4 hours to just read that single thread.
I'm not saying we should spoon feed the newbs (especially the ones who can't follow simple instructions, like not posting a question in a forum with a big sticky at the top that explicitly says "WARNING - DO *NOT* POST QUESTIONS IN THIS FORUM - only tips/info/etc."), but at what point do we say... hey, this is how you do it, these 900 posts don't matter, or are outdated, or are duplicate questions...

I WAS being serious. Maybe it's just me, but I like learning, and I like helping those who like to learn. And don't tell me it's because people don't have time to read them...I work 60-70 hours a week, take post-graduate classes, raise 3 kids (which includes going to soccer games, homework, skating and dance lessons), and I still have time to read some threads, write up some guides, and help others.
If I want to flash something, I read the entire thread, so I learn from others' mistakes. When I had my Nexus One and I wanted Blackrose, I read every post in that Blackrose thread, up until I replaced the N1. I guess I have a hard time understanding someone who doesn't, and then complains that the guides should be better, and saying "this $%!& is ridiculous".
One of the things people need to develop skills for, if they're doing anything technical, is SEARCH. It helps a lot to filter out the crap, because it's indeed impossible or at least unreal to read threads of 300+ replies. But searching helps. Noobs should start working on their google-fu.
I agree that Blackrose thread isn't the simplest around. But just think - it's not more and not less, but bootloader replacement! The very thing that noobs SHOULD NOT TOUCH until they understand what they're doing.
So, the first response should be - if you don't understand how to do something, STAY AWAY UNTIL YOU DO. And indeed, go vent somewhere else. This isn't a forum for pleasing users.

Start with these three threads, but don't limit yourself to them. You will find many useful links within those threads to help you as well. Good luck.

I bet 90% (or more) of all "Help me!" type posts can be resolved with those few threads. Maybe another 5% need to be directed to another thread or two, and only the last 5% or so actually require more information than what has already been posted. If people would follow the XDA rules, search, and read what is easily available, most of them wouldn't have problems in the first place...much less need to make posts about them time after time. This forum has evolved nicely and people have taken their time to put together guides, solve problems, and create helpful posts. It is a slap in the face of those people when others don't take the time to read the information they made available. I see it all of the time, people saying, "but this is Q&A, I should be allowed to ask questions yadayadayada...). For some reason, to them, Q&A means I don't need to search, read, or learn, I can just ask a question that has been asked 20 times already (usually still on the first page) and people must flock to me with easy answers on silver platters! Of course, that is assuming they even put the question in the Q&A forum to start with. For some reason, they think they are above the rules or they are so special the rules don't apply to them. Q&A (according to XDA) exists to help AFTER someone has already searched and read on their own...not as a substitute for doing so. And saying, "but I searched", when it is obvious that no searching or very little searching was done only makes them a liar as well.
At most, people should only need to be directed to this information (existing threads). If they choose to ignore this help or if they think they are too important to take the time needed to read and learn...too bad. Fortunately, most accept the help and take advantage of the information, others, well I guess they just need to sit around, all butt-hurt, with their bricks.
And to those that get butt-hurt...No, I'm not a Mod and I'm not affiliated with XDA, I just follow the rules that I agreed to when I signed up...just like everyone else is supposed to. DO you?
...and this isn't necessarily directed at the OP, I just happened to say it in this thread.
This is not unique to XDA. People on all forums ask before trying to find the answer. It doesn't matter how much good info is posted, most users want to be spoon fed instead of trying to learn on their own.
Even with power of Google, we see people post " how do I ....." On forums first, when the same query on google will give instant answers.
I can't explain it, but we are all witness to it.

Does not excuse it in the slightest. Anyways I'm happy for the OP choosing the S4 but this is getting quite repetitive and needs to stop :/

+1 to all
A lot of members like Axman have invested many hours in writing great "noob" threads. Very well done and easy to understand. What I never get is why folks invest a lot of money in this phone, and others, and don't want to spend time educating themselves on how to root it and flash roms.

Life, and AOKP has been keeping me quite content but yea long time no see, glad to see familiar faces
Decided I should drop by more to help with these QA threads hahaha
To the OP now, don't think we hate you or anything, it's just you put like NO EFFORT into researching. The QA forum is here to help issues beyond just getting started.

I started those guides thinking that everyone would be talking about flashing roms, whats cool, whats not, and so on, made them so anyone new could even understand, I must have forgotten that people just want to get a phone and start rooting and such, without reading because his buddy said it was cool to root and flash roms, even told him, here go to this site and get roms, and flash them. Then the process starts, a continuous posts of I can't , and it won't questions.
What gets me, you know they are not searching, because the post right above theirs has their problem right in the thread title. Saw one of those yesterday somewhere.
Ka dumb a$s, duh!

This! Also I got very intimidated by all the people screaming at me. I did a bunch of research before I asked the question and was still confused hence the question I'm not an xda idiot but the s4 was already very big in modding when I joined whereas the infuse and vivid had just started to get cwm and root when I got them so I grew with the romers I apologize for looking so nooby since reading the first post I now have a auto Loki cwm and root access and am running the Google edition ROM thank you all for the suggestions and links

Glad you got it--
Don't feel bad sometimes we need to vent--nothing personal
I came here in early May from the One S and close to 3.5 years of flashing HTC devices with the advantage of unlocked bootloaders thru fastboot. But, still felt like a noob here--still do--
Odin/Kies/Loki were all new. Esp loki. I have spent hundreds of hours reading probably a couple thousand posts. Still learning. It does take a lot of effort to figure this out for some of us--like me.
But, a good investment as one needs to not only know how but why--to not lose a pricey phone--
Welcome to the S4--Unbelievable Phone--:good:

[Q] Recovery on MF3

EDIT: Problem Resolved
Hello, after reading for hours, I now realize that I was wrong. Not totally new to rooting, etc. but this one caught me off guard. I updated to the latest MF3 OTA from ATT.
My problem is I tried to install TWRP from the goo manager, and now the recovery doesn't work on the phone at all. For the longest time it just kept rebooting the phone endlessly, and I could make it get into download mode.
I managed to get the phone to boot up by flashing the stock rom with odin in the bootloader section (did this by accident trying to recover the phone), and then went into download mode, and clicked cancel. It booted up fine.
If I try to enter recovery at all, it goes back into the endless boot cycle till I do some playing around with odin.
How to do I get the normal recovery working again? I would like to factory reset this and sell it for a GPE phone.
Thank you for your time.
Is there a downloadable mf3 ROM out there I can use to flash it with Odin?

Both of you should do a lot more reading before you mess with your phones. There are good stickies in the general forum which would be good starting points. If you had read them you might not be posting here now.

Not to be a stickler but it's the same person.
And not to be disrespectful, but the galaxyroot website says installing a custom recovery is fine but it must be rooted first - if not rooted go here - you go here and it shows the mf3 root method. Never said much else about it. I rarely use XDA to ask for information. The post always turns into a flame war with people who are extremely disrespectful. To me this forum is extremely mixed up with post, and other times the information isn't clear. I agree totally that I made the mistake, but I admit to my failure and now I'm trying to learn from it. I'll never understand why the people on this forum and I mean especially this forum love to bash others.

The reason people are annoyed is because people are constantly coming here with little knowledge, ignoring all the useful guides stickied at the top of the forums to try and help these exact same people, then rushing into an advanced procedure without a proper idea of what they're doing. Then they make a brand new thread to ask a question/beg for help, when it's already been answered 100 times, rather than searching for the answer first.
It's not something to get upset about because it's going to keep happening no matter what...but it is laughably annoying.
Anyways, I don't know what website galaxyroot is, but you need to get your info/guides/procedures/research right here at XDA...not at some random website with crappy information. That was your first mistake.

Absolutely!
And I might add...
Asking questions (regardless of how many times they have already been asked) is NOT learning. Learning IS searching and reading available information, no matter how much time it takes, until a person has complete knowledge about their device and what it is they are going to be doing to it. It is called "being responsible for your own actions":. People that keep asking the same questions over and over again are NOT trying to learn anything. They are just trying to get someone else that usually did take the time necessary to learn about their phone to get them out of a situation that they got themselves into while putting a minimum of their own effort into it. Just so they can go back and screw something up again.
People who ask valid questions AFTER they have searched, read, and learned are generally handled in a very friendly manner because they have displayed a willingness to actually learn about what they are doing. I've already said this in several other posts but it comes down to people that do things correctly versus people that are lazy, have a sense of entitlement, or feel as if their time is more valuable than others...it's just that simple.

The funny thing is: often the people who are accused of being mean/rude/unfriendly are people who spend an exceptional amount of time, each and every day, helping people in these forums! It's FREE tech support. You get "mean" when you deserve it and you are not entitled to complain about it, in my opinion.

He had like 7 post...I'm not thinking so.
Nevertheless people will ask everyday a question that has already been answered. If somebody is going to call me stupid along with other names I don't want their help, I'll eventually figure it out myself. I was just hoping to significantly speed up the process by asking a question I didn't see asked yet on the forum. (Or if it was I didn't see it and yes I did look)

I'm not quite understanding you. Instead of "checking another forum out to see if we have any solutions as of yet", why didn't you take the time to read what has been posted about it in this forum (as suggested)? People (here) even gave you a screenshot and instructions on how to find the EXACT links that would have helped. Was that not enough? I think you are being difficult just to be difficult...or do you really think that you shouldn't have to take the time to research and learn about something even when the links are handed to you? Maybe you should take a little of YOUR time to read and learn a little bit instead of expecting people to take THEIR time to answer your questions that have already been answered multiple times elsewhere, especially when people are nice enough to show you the way. What is your definition of "help"?
You don't have to answer any of this if you don't want to, I actually rather you didn't.

I'm not even going to fight with you. I'd suggest sticking on topic. Anyways I did thank those that helped so don't complain at me for not reading something you know about.
Nevertheless my recovery is working again now. Something that XDA doesn't have posted on it (at least for the mf3). Maybe I could be more of a nerd and explain things in more detail like I should have. I have been pretty sick these last few weeks. I'm a disabled veteran and have quite a lot of problems. You don't freaking know me. Don't tell me what I'm trying to be. Just because I'm not as familiar with this forum like you doesn't mean I didn't freaking try.
I am TRUELY sorry for the inconvenience I have put you through. I won't ask anymore questions here again. I'll go where I should have in the first place.
P.S. - read ALL my post before you decide to play God and tell me what I am. A post I referee to earlier was deleted so it kinda makes me look like a you know what.
Please don't try to bash me here anymore as I really never meant to offend anyone here. Its just really depressing to me that just because you found something and I didn't I'm the idiot.

Wow - 1 question and 2 pages of beating this poor guy senseless.
No disrespect but you guys/gals with 1000+ posts, try to remember when you where single digit posts.
Some people dont "haunt" this forum day and night and know "common" issues/symptoms and their fixes.
I see lots of threads with what appear to be valid questions and just about all say "this has been covered - do some research".
I hope I never go to a Doctor and say "I dont feel well, my nose is running and feel itchy" and they respond "this has been covered - do some research".
Again no disrespect but WOW!!!!

If you find a doctor who provides around the clock support for free, let me know!
If that doctor posts the answers to most of your ailments right on the door when you walk in with a big READ THIS FIRST sign...and you walk right past it and ask him a question that's on the door, do you think that might get annoying?
Ok, I'm tired of this analogy!
