Thank god for nandroid!!!!!!! - Droid Incredible General

I got a little to cocky with flashing things and flashed something I thought would be ok, but it wasn't. I got stuck in my very first bootloop and was petrified. So I went into recovery and restored. I then got a couple errors and warnings saying install failed. I began to sh*t my pants thinking I bricked my phone....then out of nowhere the recovery started...
what a friggen relief. Thinking you almost lost your baby is not a good feeling. LOL

ThWhat is the point of this thread? I read what you had to say, and honestly I couldn't figure out what you want people to respond with? I'm not trying to pick on you or anything but a thread doesn't need to be made every time you "think" you bricked your phone. Happy you figured it out, though.

Maybe this thread will inspire people to use backups?? And save us from reading 45678 i bricked my phone how can i fix it threads

ACD, you could just be a jag, no comment is better than your comment, I am sure all of your posts have been great.

ACD you rip my post by posting nonsense...classic.
My point was I was happy I backed my phone up and it worked otherwise I'd have an expensive paper weight on my desk. So yes there is something to be learned...don't flash everything you see without researching and if you flash something make sure you back up your current setup...
Here's a thought next time you don't understand or approve of a post....stop reading and move on to something else...simple as that

I'm new! I don't know what to do!!!!!!!

Ok so I've had my hero for a while and I saw all these things about rooting and flashing roms so I decided I'd do it. I used unlockr's amazing videos to root and flash RA heroc 1.2.3. I think this is an old recovery but i'm not sure. I want to flash back to stock and unroot it. I have seen some stuff about RUU(whatever that is) but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it. From what I've read around here there are alot of smart people working on this and I'm sure someone knows how to do it. To be honest I don't even remember how I rooted it or did it right without messing everything up. Any help with this is much appreciated. Or at least point me in the right direction.

Because he realizes he's in over his head and isn't comfortable. Seems valid to me.
Riggs is half right. I'm in way too deep and the things I see ya'll doin, I don't really need a $500 paper weight. I don't even know what Rom I'm running now. Under phone info it says gumbo 1.5c. I tried to use damagecontrol's but it stuck on the HTC screen several times and that kind of stuff scares me.

The first time you install a rom it usually takes awhile at first boot(5-10 mins). And if it says "gumbo 1.5c" under phone info then you're running........Gumbo 1.5c. ;x

I understand what you're saying but it's pretty hard to brick these phones. If you flashed a GSM radio yeah. I've read about some crazy issues but the devs and community always work it out. Pretty much though just follow the guides and you're golden.
Props to all of you. I appreciate the work and never get tired of trying new ROMs and themes. I've had this phone for 6 months and I spend enough time with it that my wife hates it!

When you flashed damagecontrop did you wipe data and dalvik. With most Roms you need to wipe these otherwise you will be stuck in a hour loop. When iI firstvrooted I hag no clue about any of this stuff and I now no more than I thought I would. Basically, I have turned my phone into a hobby. If you are worried about anything, just leave your phone as is and wait till the 2.1 release and use that ruu.

Holy crap have I learned a bunch today!

So my learning experience started when I decided to do Ryanza's "unlagfixme". It ran completely fine until it decided to restart itself. Once it restarted, it got to my "S" booting screen and then my screen turned black, and nothing else happened, but my bottom buttons would light up when i touched my screen. So i took the battery out and put it back in and restarted. Same thing over and over.
Here's where it was time to research. Only way i knew about getting to nandroid to do a restore was through rom manager. So after a little research, i found out about booting into recovery with adb (adb reboot recovery). Did that, and clicked reinstall packages, great! got into nandroid and was able to restore.
Then I got the crazy Idea to flash Vibrant6 from Eugene. Did that succesfully through nandroid then wanted a lag fix, so i flashed Ryanza's lag fix again to vibrant6. Phone hosed again! now it would only pop the vibrant screen and hang there. Time to do research again; this time i didnt have nandroid flashed so it was a little more difficult than before.
after hours of research to fix my phone I came across a post of how to use odin step by step. learned to boot into download mode, set up odin, flash...Did that, and odin would hang on cache.rfs, onto more RESEARCH...turns out i could install without a pit and that did the trick. after i was able to flash that ROM i was then able to get rom manager, boot into nandroid and backup my most recent backup (right after installing vibrant6) and then restore all my apps through titanium backup.
I feel today aside from the ****less scares...it has been a blessing day because I have learned: How to boot into recovery with adb, boot into download, use adb, use odin, flash a rom through odin and clockworkmod, restore TB backups, etc. After having the phone a little over 2 weeks and not knowing anything about android, i think these are great improvements and are things i didn't know how to do.
Today has been a great newb learning day. I guess you force yourself to learn things when you most need them huh! All the tools needed are here, more than likely whatever is happening to you has happened to someone else before. Search is your best friend. However, if I can help some of the other newbs to get up to speed, I'd be glad to. We have all been there right?
I'm so happy to be a part of this community!
Congrats, sounds like it was fun and nerve wracking. Having come from a G1, I was a little surprised at how relatively hard it is to flash a new rom to this phone, I guess the G1 spoiled me. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to take the same journey that you've been through at some point, but for now I'm just gonna enjoy it.

Aboslutely, it was both! I loved it so much though because i came out as a winner and learned so much while at it. I enjoy this kind of stuff though, troubleshooting, debugging, etc. Hence being a VB/C# programmer for a living!
What a great post! Glad you were able to learn all that. Yeah, it was forced, but it still all worked out for the best.
Now off, and learn how to MetaMorph, and build your own Themes! :cracks whip:

I did not. I tried all three ryanza fixes (update.zip, batch, one-click) and none of them worked for me. Couldn't get the script on modaco to work for me. And everytime i undid the lagfix it crapped my phone out. So i nand'd back to pre lag fix and I'm still debating whether I will backup to stock+lag fix (really liked the snapiness, aside from quadrant scores), or to play with Vibrant6 for a while and see if it is as snappy as stock with the lagfix or better. still debating.

I had the same thing happen to me. It sucked, thank god for the support here at xda. You guys made it so easy to fix. Thanks

It can be fixed

Last night I spent 3 hours trying to fix my phone. I got every problem that had surfaced in this forum. I got the dreaded force close loop of hell, the 0.0 internal memory, I had trouble flashing back to stock but in the end I prevailed.
The hardest part of fixing my phone was going through all the threads of people complaining that they need help and that they are having problems just to find the helpful threads. Everyone has problems you just have to be patient and read. Everything needed to fix most problems can be found in this forum so please take the time to read and remember search is you friend.

I couldn't agree more!
I spent 8 hours working through my 'disable voodoo' debacle. I'm barely literate when it comes to modding and hacking, so I knew the risks. Much like you, I managed through it with reading, perserverance, and probably a little luck.
The way I see any 'brick' issues is this:
1. Don't mod/hack your phone if you aren't willing to search, read, and work through possible issues. The phone works fine without any modifications.
2. Much like highly dangerous jobs, never get comfortable with modding a phone....thats when you make mistakes. Have a healthy respect for the fact you might accidently click the wrong button!
3. Don't flash another phone's rom (E.g. Vibrant on a Fascinate)
4. Never click the "Phone" section in Odin
5. If you've followed rules #3 and #4 and run into a problem: if the phone shows any signs of life after YOU have messed with your phone, it is very likely you can recover....maybe not perfect, but recover you can!
6. Read, read, and read.....then if you still have a problem, ask.
7. IRC Chat seems to be the quickest way to get 'free tech support' from folks, but remember, they aren't paid to help you, they aren't paid period...be nice, be respectful, and realize we are all fallible.
8. Lastly, don't give up. You'll probably learn something in the process and will feel better when you have managed to solve your own problem.
At least that is what I have learned as a noob....and I have PTSD from removing Voodoo....LV, OC, Voodoo.....so, so tempted to try it again though!
I love my fascinate. As a total android newb with some winmo experiences, I was very excited about customizing my phone even more. It took a full weekend of 8 hour days, but I've successfully installed nearly every upgrade I could dream of, after meticulously backing up at each stage of the way. The experience of modding the phone itself was the best intro to android I could dream of, and by reading all the threads through to their conclusions, I never ended up with a significant problem that I couldn't fix by renaming something from .old/.bak or a quick trip to odin. Amazing!
As my third Android device, I can admit that this phone has been a complete and total pain in the a$$. It is also easily the best device I've owned.

Safest way to root intercept for performance

I have a virgin mobile intercept.. second one due to bricking my first one.
I was woundering what the safest way would be to root the phone. I mainly want better performance.. not really worried about anything else.
Hopefully someone could tell me what the safest and most stable kernel and recovery would be. I've been reading up a lot but still confused about what to pick out and what method to use to flash the kernel and recovery.
Thanks all.

It is somewhat laughable all of these wannabe phone modders who brick their phones, then run right back to the retailer where they bought the phone and cry so that they get a new one, then go right back to attempting to brick their phone again.
Hey, here's a thought ....if you brick your phone while attempting to mod it ....its yours...live with it. Don't run back to the retailer like a baby, rather, attempt to unbrick the phone yourself. Maybe then you'll learn something, because lord knows you're not learning modding, 'responsibility' (or anything else) this way.

I would recommend
You head over to the dev section - there are a bunch of different ways to root this phone - i personally used the data cable method for my phone and the apk for my girlfriends phone - both have resorted in perma root.
Since you have bricked this device before when attempting to mod it - i recommend you don't worry about custom rom/recovery right away - focus on getting the device rooted and removing some of the annoying bloat with a tool like Root Toolbox or Titanium Backup.
Hope that helps a little. Let me know if I can be of further use.
Search "Samsung Intercept Root sdx" and look for the one about an apk. Worked flawlessly.

I am not as blunt as "old_dude" but I agree completely with his point. When I bricked my first droid, which was a LG Optimus. I spent about 40 hrs at the computer fixing it. But I got it back to perfect working condition. I learned more about "Android" in those 40 hrs than I can describe. Not to mention the pride of fixing something most can't. So if you want to be any kind of Droid person fix it your self. Also alerting retailers to the fact you are trying to root your phone is pretty dumb. Even if you think they don't know, the phone you turned in has a log that lists everything you did from the moment you first turned it on!

Its been a good run.

Well, after some misinformed past rumors, I am finally leaving the Evo. I make this thread not because I feel like I'm 'important' or that anyone will care, but because of the community. Despite the past ICS fallout between users and developers, the Evo community has been one of the best on XDA, and can say that it was nice being apart of it. Made some good friends, and a few enemies, but comes with the territory. I'll still pop in from time to time, but I know I will see some of you in my new home, the Galaxy S III [will be here tomorrow]. Do keep the Evo name standing, as its a great device.

Best investment you can make on a galaxy device man, should be the first apps you purchase once you decide you're keeping the device. Yea Odin is a bit tricky at first, the things you'll probably have more questions with are the dreaded brick bug(idk if the sgs3 is plagued with that nuisance or not, I hope not) and how to avoid it, since its a permabrick if it hits you. The whole method of doing stuff on Samsung is just alien when coming from HTC. Took me a few weeks b4 I was back to flashing like a junkie again with out reading and rereading every step over and over prior to trying something new. I've had a few months with the sgs2 now so if you have questions about samsungs whole crazy zimage/recovery and how recovery is baked into the kernel and changes every time you change kernels I'm more than happy to answer em the best I can or point you in the direction of your answers atleast.

Much appreciated man, and actually been doing some reason: the kernel and boot image on the G S III were separated so its actually a lot safer to root. In addition I've looked up the G S III root [international version] and actually QUITE painless, even using Odin. Since there were minimal hardware specs, aside from processor of course, but I believe the root will be the same or extremely similar. I originally was going to buy the original galaxy S, but I refused to get the epic with a hard keyboard, so I went with the Evo; though not like it was a bad choice.

That's cool they seperated the kernel from the recovery now, on the ET4G there's no normal boot.img its called a zImage and has the kernel and recovery in the same partition so flashing a kernel changes your recovery. It can get quite confusing going from rom to rom and build to build and having to remember which recovery which backup was made with so you can Odin it to restore we still don't have official ICS or kernel source yet so flashing ICS roms requires first flashing a GB kernel with pure CWM to avoid a blue light of death brick. Talk about confusing, it took me a week of reading before I had the balls to try ICS but now I can mOdin el26+cwm kernel and flash ICS in my sleep. I've been running aokp since march never went back to gb except the few times I bootlooped and had to Odin to el29(latest GB ota) and start fresh. Once you get a feel for it and get any questions you have lingering out of the way its painless but the first few times you're sweating missles waiting to it to flash and boot and praying you didn't just brick, LOL. My first venture to ICS I chewed off all my nails while flashing it, I was so nervous I forgot something and was gonna fry my eMMC chip and be bricked.
ETA: what's even worse for me is I have 4 different manufacturers devices all different methods of flashing and its hard keeping it all straight, going from HTC, to Amazon to Motorola to Samsung and trying to remember which one you flash how is an exercise in frustration :banghead:

Having dev'd on the Moment, I remember the zimage! Actually the best way to work with adding a kernel to a ROM

Its just a pain in the ass for recovery, only because every time you change kernels if the new one has a different recovery your recovery then changes. On the et4g we have cwm, rogue and acs custom recoveries, and not all backups are compatible across all recoveries so you gotta try and keep track of what goes with what since we have to use the el26 kernel with pure cwm recovery to safely flash ICS without bricking I use it for everything recovery, but that requires me to Odin the el26 kernel everytime I need to do something in recovery and since I run ICS I then have to flash an ICS kernel to reboot my phone. Its more of a hassle/annoyance than anything just cuz of all the extra steps required to flash/backup etc
