So my learning experience started when I decided to do Ryanza's "unlagfixme". It ran completely fine until it decided to restart itself. Once it restarted, it got to my "S" booting screen and then my screen turned black, and nothing else happened, but my bottom buttons would light up when i touched my screen. So i took the battery out and put it back in and restarted. Same thing over and over.
Here's where it was time to research. Only way i knew about getting to nandroid to do a restore was through rom manager. So after a little research, i found out about booting into recovery with adb (adb reboot recovery). Did that, and clicked reinstall packages, great! got into nandroid and was able to restore.
Then I got the crazy Idea to flash Vibrant6 from Eugene. Did that succesfully through nandroid then wanted a lag fix, so i flashed Ryanza's lag fix again to vibrant6. Phone hosed again! now it would only pop the vibrant screen and hang there. Time to do research again; this time i didnt have nandroid flashed so it was a little more difficult than before.
after hours of research to fix my phone I came across a post of how to use odin step by step. learned to boot into download mode, set up odin, flash...Did that, and odin would hang on cache.rfs, onto more RESEARCH...turns out i could install without a pit and that did the trick. after i was able to flash that ROM i was then able to get rom manager, boot into nandroid and backup my most recent backup (right after installing vibrant6) and then restore all my apps through titanium backup.
I feel today aside from the ****less scares...it has been a blessing day because I have learned: How to boot into recovery with adb, boot into download, use adb, use odin, flash a rom through odin and clockworkmod, restore TB backups, etc. After having the phone a little over 2 weeks and not knowing anything about android, i think these are great improvements and are things i didn't know how to do.
Today has been a great newb learning day. I guess you force yourself to learn things when you most need them huh! All the tools needed are here, more than likely whatever is happening to you has happened to someone else before. Search is your best friend. However, if I can help some of the other newbs to get up to speed, I'd be glad to. We have all been there right?
I'm so happy to be a part of this community!
Congrats, sounds like it was fun and nerve wracking. Having come from a G1, I was a little surprised at how relatively hard it is to flash a new rom to this phone, I guess the G1 spoiled me. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to take the same journey that you've been through at some point, but for now I'm just gonna enjoy it.

Aboslutely, it was both! I loved it so much though because i came out as a winner and learned so much while at it. I enjoy this kind of stuff though, troubleshooting, debugging, etc. Hence being a VB/C# programmer for a living!
What a great post! Glad you were able to learn all that. Yeah, it was forced, but it still all worked out for the best.
Now off, and learn how to MetaMorph, and build your own Themes! :cracks whip:

Thank goodness I did my hours of reading pre scares and I was already in the know on what I had to do to flash back to what I was before and try again, but I def feel for your situation and applaud your using the search feature instead of just making a "help me!" awesome! forums have been a godsend. Now i can get information from the actual users rather than corporate generalities for whatever question i might have.
Holy twinner batman! I had almost the EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE YESTERDAY! Although I skipped the part about adb and went straight into the ODIN download. THIS is exactly why I will NEVER own a JobsPhone!
Your not a newb anymore. Having gone through all that heart sinking, palm sweating, stomach churning, experiences.

I did not. I tried all three ryanza fixes (update.zip, batch, one-click) and none of them worked for me. Couldn't get the script on modaco to work for me. And everytime i undid the lagfix it crapped my phone out. So i nand'd back to pre lag fix and I'm still debating whether I will backup to stock+lag fix (really liked the snapiness, aside from quadrant scores), or to play with Vibrant6 for a while and see if it is as snappy as stock with the lagfix or better. still debating.

I had the same thing happen to me. It sucked, thank god for the support here at xda. You guys made it so easy to fix. Thanks
Ok so I just got this phone (coming from a DInc), just wondering what ROM is the best one out there. I am already rooted and have clockwork installed, now itching to put a ROM on and get rid of Bing lol.
Did you flash Clockwork in Odin? You can't do it from ROM Manager on this phone.
JT's super clean is a safe bet. Blackhole is another popular one.
Correct you need to flash it through odin ie clockwork. I have used alot of roms so far but I like the black hole build you're own. Many options and the recent v1.4.1 is really nice. Sonsofskywalker is a great dev and keeps up on his stuff.
Sent from your mothers closet.
Also check or geekniks stupid fast kernel 1.2.3 you can use many other phones boot animations.

Honestly Ive seen absolutely no improvement in using a custom rom vs launcherpro over stock. Your better off keeping it stock for now untill 2.2 comes out.
But if your even smarter you return the phone. Dont throw away the box, you like me might not be happy with it and get stuck with it. I dont think its actually the phone im unhappy with....but more android. Android has become a disapointment to me. An OS is only as good as the applications it has.
I was a 3 time Iphone user....then switch from att to verizon in Nov 2009 and have gone through a bunch of droid phones. On Verizon its the best choice. But when Windows phone 7 or Iphone hits next year many will be gone.
I know many of you guys will chew me up over this. But I gotta speak the truth,

I had an iPhone... IMO the iPhone is a toy. I plan on giving this a go for 30 days and see if I like it or not. If I dont I will return it and go back to my DInc.
Thanks for the advice on the ROMs guys I will download that one now
Also, is there anyway to get Bing completely off the phone? And what about when I hit the search button to be able to get directions like I could on my DInc.

Yes, there is a way to get Bing completely off. I will tell you if you just read the stickies at the top, you probably didn't need to post this.
If you have root access, which is easily done, you can then use install CWM. Once you do that, you can install jt's super clean rom. That'll take care of your issues.
If you don't like the way the current launcher you are using, install ADW or LauncherPro. I personally recommend ADW as it is open source and well developed.
But again, you should have posted this in the General forum. And you should have read the stickies before posting.
Can you imagine what this forum would be like if everyone who purchased a Fascinate posted saying exactly what you are saying???

Apparently you have reading comprehension issues also so I dont know why you are trying to be hard and call me out. I have rooted, I did flash clockwork, and I did flash a ROM, but its still not functioning the same as my DInc was.

My bad. I do have reading comprehension issues...
Anyways, depends on what you want, the good ones are already in ROM Manager to download when you feel like.
Sonofskywalker's ROM is neat in that it erases everything stock and leaves only what you want to leave in there.
JT's is simple and clean.
Deoxdexed is not bad, but it does come with a theme if you're into that.
I used "Super Dark" I really like the layout, but now all my haptic feeling in the phone is gone
Ok I got it working, I flashed the stock kernel to the phone... seems to be working properly right now

My wife has been nagging me to root and rom up her Fascinate for a while now after seeing me spend hours playing with different roms and mods on my Incredible. She got bored and tried to flash something and "bricked" her phone. Uuhhg guess who gets to fix it? I want to thank you all for the easy to follow directions, I was able to get her on DL09 after following the great guides posted in the forum. Man this phone is a little more tricky than my dInc, but I am in LOVE with the big screen!! Once again, thank you all, my wife finally is happier and stopped nagging me!
Congrats man, thats good to hear. The phone's not really that difficult to mess around with though

I'm just use to my phone I guess Odin had me a little nervous (hooking up with the battery pulled and all) but given a little time I'll probably be allot more comfortable with it (until the wife gets bored again).
Just keep in mind that as long as you don't flash anything with the Phone button in ODIN, it's almost impossible to actually brick this phone. Even then it's not technically a brick, as you can still make it bootable; the cellular radio just won't work anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, Im the happy beneficiary of rooted stock. And for the folks that are all about the phone geek thing knock urselves out, Im enjoyin the reads. But let's be honest,GB isn't a warm fuzzy balance of enhancements for time invested.
After couple of functionality tweeks like rooting for bloat reduction, Froyo is highly functional and solid. I personally have a limited amount of free time...which incidentally is maximized by my highly feature-laden rock solid DX...and while Iapplaud u bleeding edge cowboys, I'm gonna stay put...til Moto releases GB and somebody here gets it rooted.

Technically with the locked bootloader everybody is running a Motorola released version. This new version of gb that was released was by an ota to a few phones. While not a full fledged update to gb it is very stable and reliable. I have been on it and have zero problems. All of my apps appeared. And no bootloops. The directions for everything that needs to be done are very well done and there is almost a zero percent chance of truly bricking your phone. And with sbf'ing and everything I had to do to get to gb it only took me about fifteen total minutes to get there. Enjoy your stable Froyo and popcorn and I will enjoy my stable Gingerbread.

What's the point? Why do you do things that you do? It's simply because this is a development forum for people who enjoy this stuff. We enjoy flashing things and learning all we can about this stuff. It is fun for us. The reason people have issues is almost 100% user error. That means that they forgot to do something. Or didn't fully download a file. Or did something in the wrong order. There's almost never a problem with the software provided to us. The files work, people just make mistakes

+1. With the locked bootloader and no way for people to try to flash the radio or kernel. It has made this phone nearly impossible to hard brick. I only know of one. Every other person has worked through there problems by the helpful people and guides on this and other forums. You stick around here long enough and you will be eating gingerbread instead of popcorn.
Edit: I should say no way to flash a custom kernel or custom radio.

While I share the philosophy of the OP (waiting for OTA and z4root-esque rooting), I don't agree that anyone should avoid applying GB. I did that sort of thing with my WinMo phone and if I felt the need to GB now, I absolutely would with no worries about the quality of the rom.
And with the potential for a long break without being rooted, I may just do that. I'm not up to speed with a lot of this, but will a root for the OTA be possible and will it take some time? I needs my AdFree, Tether and CacheCleaner.
I'm not trying to go against the tone of the thread here by saying this, but I have Gingerbread and am really not looking back. Stock Froyo was boring, everyone will agree with that. From there you had either ApeX or rubiX (or later Liberty). I ran all three actually and settled between Apex and rubiX Focused. Apex is/was good for battery life and overall stability. rubiX Focused is/was good for speed and stability, battery life was a bit less than Apex. But to me Gingerbread is the best of both worlds. 30-40 hour battery life PLUS the much improved (for most) Quadrant scores and overall speed and snappiness is like rubiX + ApeX. (video here)
I guess all I'm trying to say is that *when done properly*, if you flash from your favorite ROM to Gingerbread it's completely doable without any hitches or hangups. The thing to remember here is this: you're going from your favorite build/ROM/setup to something completely foreign. When I first flashed 2.3 (the most recent OTA, deodexed & rooted) there were some things I complained about. Then, with time and just playing around with it, I figured them out. I think most people are "having issues" with it because it's really that much of a change. It's not the jump from 2.2 to 2.2.1. It's a whole new setup, interface and all. I think it's the process that scares people, and that's understandable, but just remember.. it's virtually IMPOSSIBLE to brick your phone. With SBF, you'd almost have to be trying to mess things ups. Find a decent guide and give it a shot. You can always flash back to your current setup.

Just a heads up, be careful with Wireless Tether on 2.3.. or even 2.2 if you're going over 5GB. People are saying that's being watched now.
I didn't really say "what's the point", I said the reward for time spent seemed dubious.....and I said I applaud the efforts and am the beneficiary of them. But damn there's lotta varying degrees of success. Part of my trouble is my PC's incompatibilty with the DX drivers that prevents me from sbfing....which seems like the safety net.
Buy beyond that I haven't read anything that puts GB so very much up the foodchain from froyo ....boring? Froyo is boring compared to GB how?
And zippy? My DX is very zippy...
Maybe Im not running enough stuff ;-)
I have to say, extended battery life has my eyebrow raised...that'd be welcome.
To be honest I was thinkin about loading the dx drivers on the DAW side of my dual boot XP box...down side is that boot is offline with no antivirus etc to maximize the resources for the studio ....don't wanna **** up a well-oiled machine....which brings me back to sittin in my chaise lounge on the sideline til GB is as easy as rooting &deodexing was.
Thx for the civil discourse.

I am definitely getting better battery life. The other day I calibrated my battery and had to wait for 1 day 13 hours and change before the thing finally died. Also if the drivers aren't working for you try this. http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/d...-solution-your-windows-rsd-lite-problems.html
just put it on a cd and go. It is linux. I haven't used it since my windows 7 64 bit system did the job for me just fine, but I have heard a really good response with this. Also, if you have any questions about it the guy is really good at answering them.
Since you are on stock....you are really in the perfect position to upgrade to gb the easiest. Root, Droid 2 Bootstrap, wipe, run the 3 files from tbh, wipe, and reboot. Off you go.
Just to note TBH has put out a rooted version of the GB leak....
I have blur_version.23588.p1 p2. And p3 plus the droid 2 bootstrap. So ur sayin I'm good to go from 2.2 rooted stock froyo up to GB without needing any sbf connection to my PC, right?
This is a good time for me to phuck around w the phone cuz Im off this week.
Couple of last questions :
I bought power amp...am I gonna lose it?
Does the camera settings issue mentioned recently apply to me on this load?
What does OTA stand for?
Can I get back to froyo 2.2 without sbf?
How many pecks in aa bushel?
Thx

1. No it will redownload after you flash
2. Yes. No idea why or how to fix
3. Over-the-air. It is an update sent directly to your phone from Verizon.
4. No. But SBF'ing is not difficult at all, it's just the idea that scares people and that people make stupid mistakes
5. I think two, or four maybe. But that is completely unrelated. Look it up

One distinction ...instructions here included "wipe", but the instructions from the modderX site did not mention wipe.
Furthermore there are 2 wipes .... I tried wiping the cache...no joy. The other wipe looked too scary..sumpin about reset factory blah blah blah.....

Well, after some misinformed past rumors, I am finally leaving the Evo. I make this thread not because I feel like I'm 'important' or that anyone will care, but because of the community. Despite the past ICS fallout between users and developers, the Evo community has been one of the best on XDA, and can say that it was nice being apart of it. Made some good friends, and a few enemies, but comes with the territory. I'll still pop in from time to time, but I know I will see some of you in my new home, the Galaxy S III [will be here tomorrow]. Do keep the Evo name standing, as its a great device.

If I ever happen to be on GTalk, hit me up. I doubt I'll be moving to the S III, but I am eligible for an upgrade so don't know... haven't really done my research yet. Send me a message and let me know how you like it once you've got it broken in.
Even if we don't have the same device, I'm sure I'll see you around. You've taught me a lot, even when you didn't realize it, and no one else has been as nice to me as you have, so thank you.

No need to be sad, and you can always hit me up on gtalk when you're on. You've got a ton of gold stars now, I've lost count. And I've seen you helping others, when you may not have thought me around. And you're very welcome, I'm glad to hear that...made me smile.
I'm still going to be around here, as I have a horded amount of knowledge...this was my first smart phone, and I think I made a great choice. I'll definitely let you know about the review, and can send you spec info.

Yeah! Where the hell HAVE you been?? (In my nicest voice)
If you're keeping your Evo you can be like me and be a forum whore lol. I'm on 7 sub forums right now, but only following on a few of them and active on 3. Mostly lurk on the others just for info. You can add me on gtalk of ya want my donation email in my profile is my gtalk name, if u got any questions about Samsung feel free to hit me up. Flashing and such is a little different than HTC and will take some time and questions to get the hang of. Got recovery, Odin and mobile Odin for your flashing needs, no more ruu's and no more unlocking bootloaders with an exploit. Odin takes care of those areas.

Oh yea, can do. And actually won't keep the evo [in my possession]; sending it home to my dad. He's on an optimus S and hates it, so big upgrade for him, and will do more than it needs for him. I'm actually pretty good with Odin, rooted a Galaxy S for this girl not too long ago. Odin is different, but its not bad once you get used to it, and mobile odin and triangle away do seem like a good investment.
add me on gtalk anytime, bro

Best investment you can make on a galaxy device man, should be the first apps you purchase once you decide you're keeping the device. Yea Odin is a bit tricky at first, the things you'll probably have more questions with are the dreaded brick bug(idk if the sgs3 is plagued with that nuisance or not, I hope not) and how to avoid it, since its a permabrick if it hits you. The whole method of doing stuff on Samsung is just alien when coming from HTC. Took me a few weeks b4 I was back to flashing like a junkie again with out reading and rereading every step over and over prior to trying something new. I've had a few months with the sgs2 now so if you have questions about samsungs whole crazy zimage/recovery and how recovery is baked into the kernel and changes every time you change kernels I'm more than happy to answer em the best I can or point you in the direction of your answers atleast.

Much appreciated man, and actually been doing some reason: the kernel and boot image on the G S III were separated so its actually a lot safer to root. In addition I've looked up the G S III root [international version] and actually QUITE painless, even using Odin. Since there were minimal hardware specs, aside from processor of course, but I believe the root will be the same or extremely similar. I originally was going to buy the original galaxy S, but I refused to get the epic with a hard keyboard, so I went with the Evo; though not like it was a bad choice.

That's cool they seperated the kernel from the recovery now, on the ET4G there's no normal boot.img its called a zImage and has the kernel and recovery in the same partition so flashing a kernel changes your recovery. It can get quite confusing going from rom to rom and build to build and having to remember which recovery which backup was made with so you can Odin it to restore we still don't have official ICS or kernel source yet so flashing ICS roms requires first flashing a GB kernel with pure CWM to avoid a blue light of death brick. Talk about confusing, it took me a week of reading before I had the balls to try ICS but now I can mOdin el26+cwm kernel and flash ICS in my sleep. I've been running aokp since march never went back to gb except the few times I bootlooped and had to Odin to el29(latest GB ota) and start fresh. Once you get a feel for it and get any questions you have lingering out of the way its painless but the first few times you're sweating missles waiting to it to flash and boot and praying you didn't just brick, LOL. My first venture to ICS I chewed off all my nails while flashing it, I was so nervous I forgot something and was gonna fry my eMMC chip and be bricked.
ETA: what's even worse for me is I have 4 different manufacturers devices all different methods of flashing and its hard keeping it all straight, going from HTC, to Amazon to Motorola to Samsung and trying to remember which one you flash how is an exercise in frustration :banghead:

Its just a pain in the ass for recovery, only because every time you change kernels if the new one has a different recovery your recovery then changes. On the et4g we have cwm, rogue and acs custom recoveries, and not all backups are compatible across all recoveries so you gotta try and keep track of what goes with what since we have to use the el26 kernel with pure cwm recovery to safely flash ICS without bricking I use it for everything recovery, but that requires me to Odin the el26 kernel everytime I need to do something in recovery and since I run ICS I then have to flash an ICS kernel to reboot my phone. Its more of a hassle/annoyance than anything just cuz of all the extra steps required to flash/backup etc

Do not forget us! Do not forget us! Good Luck in that new Galaxy.
