So my learning experience started when I decided to do Ryanza's "unlagfixme". It ran completely fine until it decided to restart itself. Once it restarted, it got to my "S" booting screen and then my screen turned black, and nothing else happened, but my bottom buttons would light up when i touched my screen. So i took the battery out and put it back in and restarted. Same thing over and over.
Here's where it was time to research. Only way i knew about getting to nandroid to do a restore was through rom manager. So after a little research, i found out about booting into recovery with adb (adb reboot recovery). Did that, and clicked reinstall packages, great! got into nandroid and was able to restore.
Then I got the crazy Idea to flash Vibrant6 from Eugene. Did that succesfully through nandroid then wanted a lag fix, so i flashed Ryanza's lag fix again to vibrant6. Phone hosed again! now it would only pop the vibrant screen and hang there. Time to do research again; this time i didnt have nandroid flashed so it was a little more difficult than before.
after hours of research to fix my phone I came across a post of how to use odin step by step. learned to boot into download mode, set up odin, flash...Did that, and odin would hang on cache.rfs, onto more RESEARCH...turns out i could install without a pit and that did the trick. after i was able to flash that ROM i was then able to get rom manager, boot into nandroid and backup my most recent backup (right after installing vibrant6) and then restore all my apps through titanium backup.
I feel today aside from the ****less scares...it has been a blessing day because I have learned: How to boot into recovery with adb, boot into download, use adb, use odin, flash a rom through odin and clockworkmod, restore TB backups, etc. After having the phone a little over 2 weeks and not knowing anything about android, i think these are great improvements and are things i didn't know how to do.
Today has been a great newb learning day. I guess you force yourself to learn things when you most need them huh! All the tools needed are here, more than likely whatever is happening to you has happened to someone else before. Search is your best friend. However, if I can help some of the other newbs to get up to speed, I'd be glad to. We have all been there right?

Congrats, sounds like it was fun and nerve wracking. Having come from a G1, I was a little surprised at how relatively hard it is to flash a new rom to this phone, I guess the G1 spoiled me. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to take the same journey that you've been through at some point, but for now I'm just gonna enjoy it.

Aboslutely, it was both! I loved it so much though because i came out as a winner and learned so much while at it. I enjoy this kind of stuff though, troubleshooting, debugging, etc. Hence being a VB/C# programmer for a living!

Thank goodness I did my hours of reading pre scares and I was already in the know on what I had to do to flash back to what I was before and try again, but I def feel for your situation and applaud your using the search feature instead of just making a "help me!" Post like you usually see for a topic that's already been covered....

I did not. I tried all three ryanza fixes (update.zip, batch, one-click) and none of them worked for me. Couldn't get the script on modaco to work for me. And everytime i undid the lagfix it crapped my phone out. So i nand'd back to pre lag fix and I'm still debating whether I will backup to stock+lag fix (really liked the snapiness, aside from quadrant scores), or to play with Vibrant6 for a while and see if it is as snappy as stock with the lagfix or better. still debating.

Sorry for this "noob"ish post. I am new to the Fascinate after being with T-Mo for 2 years, which included a G1 (running CyanMod) and a Nexus One (which also ran CyanMod). I am just hoping one of you would mind giving me a quick 2 minute catch up on where things are now with the Fascinate, as there is way too much on these forums to realistically sift through. I have some basic questions...
1)I have noticed root is good and all that. I would assume rooting is all you need to get free wireless tethering? What program do you use to wireless tether once you are rooted?
2)I keep seeing something about "lagfix". What is that? My phone doesn't seem laggy, except for all the bloatware Verizon has put on it. So any info is appreciated.
3)I'm not crazy about the stock 2.1 ROM. Are there any good custom 2.2 ROMs yet? What is generally the best ROM for the Fascinate? On the Nexus, argue as much as you want, CyanMod was far and away the best ROM. But it seems like there is no CyanMod for Fascinates. So what are my best choices?
4)Is there anything else I should know moving to this phone?
I really appreciate anyone taking the time to answer these, as I know these types of threads are not the most popular thing on here. Also a G1 and N1 owner. Be happy to help.
1) Wireless tethering is accomplished by myself without issue via Wireless tether app on the market. It's under the radar so to speak, but required an ad hoc connection
2) The correct lagfix is the voodoo lag fix, with the informative posts being found on the first page of this forum. Basically, Samsung used an older file system in their build, and voodoo updates it to ext4, which is alot snappier on the r/w side of things. Without it, you will encounter a slowing of your processes after a period of uptime, and usually a small freeze while the phone does things like install applications. The flip is that voodoo instructions should be read very closely, and adhered to. Failure to do so will result in phone borkage, and while always fixable, takes some time and patience to do so.
If you are unfamiliar with Odin, as I was at first, make damn sure you always use the PDA option. Failure to do so can result in terminal frustration, and possibly a close to true brick of the device.
3) There are no 2.2 ROMs yet. The Froyo OTA should hit between now and Christmas hopefully. I would like to think we will see some custom 2.2 ROMs, and maybe a CM port by the 1st. In the meanwhile there are several ROMs on this board which seem to work for the people who use them. I'm a proponent of stripping and customizing stock to suit your needs, making your ROM your own. I haven't seen enough included hacks in the available ROMs to warrant a need for them personally. We have some excellent kernels available, and some pretty slick themes and mods, which works well for me.
4) The phone has the best processor/gpu out currently. The display is fantastic, and I don't see a better device on the market currently. It does have downsides, most notably the GPS, which isn't a huge issue for me, but which also has a fix on the way, presumably to be included in the 2.2 update. I also have experienced a shortage in the Wifi reception comparative to my N1, having approx. half the range I previously enjoyed. This seems to me to be software related, so I assume it will be addressable.
If you plan to root and mod, especially if you plan to use voodoo, which I highly recommend, be careful in your reading of instructions and applications of procedures outlined in them. As great as this phone is, mistakes are costly in terms of confusion and time to correct.
Thanks for the reply. Im always impatient, and as such, have already rooted before even waiting for a first response I used the one click method though and it worked great, exactly as advertised. Root Explorer works, so I definitely am good there, and I snagged the latest build of wireless tether from the developer's page.
Now I need to get started with actually switching out the ROM. I really want all the VZ bloatware gone and Bing needs to go as well. So now I guess I have some reading to do on installing ROMs for this phone. Process seems a little more complex for this phone that it was for my N1, but that may be just because it was so long ago and I don't remember. Thanks for the response though!
I am in a similar boat I use the Droid 1 and my fascinate is at the post office waiting for me per usps tracking
I think for now I will root remove bloatware and Bing and role with that till 2.2 maybe touchwiz aswell as I hear u can save ram that way and I paid for launcher pro so might aswell use it.
Yea, from what I've read, it sounds like putting a new ROM on is kind of pointless, since it won't be 2.2 anyway. So I think I just need some good instructions for this voodoo/lagfix stuff and some good instructions for removing all the vzn bloatware that comes installed. Once I do those two things, I think I'll be good. I am already running ADW, which I love, so I don't need any customization there, and wireless tether seems great. So I guess I just need to continue searching. I'm somewhat of a new member, but have silently read through these forums for months... I used Dirks d02 sv1200kernal and the voodoo lag fix, I have been very happy with my phone since. I have been reading about the roms right now and don't see a point just yet. Freeze the bloatware from verizon and you will love your phone. Also have switched to LPPlus and think my phone operates so smooth!
I just received my fascinate friday, best buy sucked me in, lol, and I have no regrets. This phone is amazing, better than my d1 and d2. I too had a lot of the same questions about the lagfix and what not and would just like to say thanks, this thread def helped me understand. Can't wait until 2.2 roms

I posted on replacing the stock launcher with ADW or LP, as well as a couple lists of what is safe to remove. It's easy enough. I'm mobile our I would link the threads, but the replacement of bing its also covered in a post that includes some zips that will help.

What is LPPlus? Is it worthwhile/simple to do?
To everyone else, I am glad I was not the only other one on the fence. XDA can be a bit scary sometimes, because you don't wanna ask something dumb/"noob"ish, but at the same time, if you haven't been there since the beginning, playing catch up can be hard. I will say everyone in the Fascinate threads has been nice and really helpful so far. I am slowly working through getting my phone the way I want it. Its just a shame that Verizon has to mess up the phone with all this garbage. I dont care much for the iPhone (design or software), but the one thing they do right, which comes at the cost of being "closed", is that they can dictate the user experience right out of the box. Unfortunately a lot of people are just too timid or incapable of doing the things we do to our phones to get them "right". Its a shame too, because people base their opinions on what Android the phone company gives you rather than what it can truly be. Regardless, I appreciate everyone's help and look forward to being a part of this community. I work IT at a school, so I know my way around a PC, but I wish I just knew more about Android coding and how phones work to be a true contributor to ROMs, etc. At least I know I helped a few people by speaking up and creating this thread. Thanks again everyone!!!
Edit: Im putting this in as an edit, but I just realized that LPPlus is probably Launcher Pro Plus. Have you used ADW? Is there a difference? What do you see as its advantages over ADW?
I personally (and i think most of us here would agree) don't have a problem with anyone asking "dumb" questions, if they haven't already been answered. the main issue is that most of the new posts are either "I didn't read the instructions and F*ed up my phone", "hey i heard this crazy rumor it must be true", "Can someone explain the same thing there are already 6 other topics about" and "how can we take X from this other phone and use it on mine". your questions are understandable and asking questions before you jump in saves a lot of headaches from having to fix something you tried without understanding it. and honestly, no need to be afraid to ask anything, worst case scenario someone like me *****es at you over the internet. who cares. =)

I can live without flash on my phone, but wifi tether is my only at home source of internt and there's no way I'm paying Sprint's greedy asses thirty bucks a month for something android's capable of doing for free.

Its really not that difficult. Just backup your phone (boot into clockwork>backup+restore>backup), flash the new PIT+modem through Odin, and install quantumROM (or any other rom) from zip on SD through clockwork. No issues for me here. ^,^
Plus, you can always restore if something goes wrong or flash to stock and restore the data from your backup.
I'm pretty new to android and I was kinda worried at first as well, but seriously its not hard at all. I cringed when I first rooted my evo and now on to my epic and I'm not scared at all now. Rooting my phone was the best thing I've done to it and I don't regret trying. I know there are "risks" involved but as long as you read and follow the instructions posted in literally every post then you'll be fine. And flashing to froyo was way easier than I thought. I was gonna stay on 2.1 till the official 2.2 release came out but I can't leave stuff alone. And it was super easy! Odin worked exactly as described and flashing roms is a simple process. You just have to read and read again. So have fun and happy modding.

Nothing risky about it just need the capability of following simple step by step directions (seeming to become a rarity today). Most the people on here should have crapped their pants in the early days of android flashing SPLs to load roms that would have a high probability of bricking the phone requiring a JTAG repair to get working again.

To the OP, you are correct in saying this is risky business. Enjoy your Epic in its stock form as it is already an excellent phone. Wait till your official upgrade comes out very soon and just enjoy!

request? I don't see a request from the OP, just him stating that he thinks it is risky to flash 2.2.1 and we were telling him why we didn't think it was risky. Is the forum getting so controlling that an opinion related directly to an OP's post is labeled invalid??? My post didn't call him any names or make fun of him, just stated that its a developers forum, not for people who can't live without problems.

for us noobs. it is damn near impossible to root this phone. i look all over the internet and i look up every possible related error nobody has an answer to/ adn thats the superoneclick method and it's "memory issue" ...it is impossible all. so we enjoy our slow phones in the meantime because some of us cant downgrade and go back to 1.6 because there is no data coverage. thank you all.

I was the first to root the fender Mytouch. Look around for my guide in the forum if you dont believe me. It took myself and Cursordroid 3 days of Gchat back and forth, files back and forth till we figured out exactly what needed to be done.
In the end, It was a gold card, a rom for a different phone, and ENG bootloader on long enough to flash a recovery... then everything back to stock. Now with all these Universal roots, zroot etc everyone thinks its always supposed to be just that easy.
I nearly broke 2 phones trying to get it rooted int he first place for people... Just because there isnt anything yet, stop your *****ing and have patience.
Better yet... everyone wants it rooted out of the box for eclair/froyo... but then an actual OYA update comes out for the newest version of Froyo.... and nothing but whining.....

No he's saying he's aggravated your complaining about SuperOneClick when it used to almost take an act of god to get your phone rooted, which is the other guide in my signature (being the harder way).

Yeah, which just means that the new method isn't as reliable as the old, that's about it. What he's saying is that you didn't pour hours upon hours trying to get your phone rooted, so don't complain. I'm not flaming, just pointing out his point, which I tend to agree with. I had already rooted my phone by the time I made even my first post on here, and that was after about 16 hours spent researching and double-checking and trial and error. Now people are getting rooted in less than 15 minutes without having to do much outside read a post from the forum.
As for your problem with not having data coverage and SuperOneClick not working, you'd be better off rooting using the old method anyways. And yes, SuperOneClick has issues, but at least it works for 2.2.1 whereas the other two more popular programs (Universal Androot and z4root) died off with 1.6.
Man I agree with crypsmoker and donjuan about you people have no idea how much effort we put into rooting our phones. I learned adb installed development tools and researched countless hours before ever attempting the actual rooting. I am glad it was so hard then. Not saying I don't think less tech savvy people shouldn't have full control of their own phones. Sometimes it takes time to fully understand what it is you are doing and I hope it brings great satisfaction to all who succeed.

Well... there's a solution to that. Just don't be a newb.
Am I a newb? I can think of over a dozen just on the top of my head that aren't newbs. Yet we try to help those that are. And what do we get for our efforts? Posts like this. Here's a suggestion for any whiners, you can either NOT root your phone OR develop an easier alternative. Complaining about the process isn't going to get anyone anywhere. It's only going to frustrate the hell out of those that put in hundreds of hours to even make it possible for the non-newbs! Just reading this thread really pissed me off because it makes me realize what I've been wasting my time on. Helping newbs that can't root the phone because it's "impossible." And if you think that it really is impossible then try starting off with a brand new linux based operating system on an alien device. That was the G1. That was some work! It involved telnet, mounting the system as rw, dowloading and PUSHING files over with adb, etc. That was just to GET root. So now we have a 1-click method that doesn't always work on all devices and your pissed? Whatever. Anyone that isn't persistant enough to get root either doesn't want it bad enough or your just too damn lazy to accomplish it. All of the information is available and there are HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of people that have accomplished what you can't. So by that very definition there are probably more non-newbs than there are newbs like yourself! Yet you come in here and get all pissed off because you can't get root. Okay... so how is that everyone elses fault? We understand that your upset but don't start pissing all over those that worked hard to get us where we are now! I hate getting pissed on by ungreatful, newbs with a bad attitude! In fact... anyone that has that kind of attitude I will refuse to help them. Why? Because they will never be greatful and they will never learn anything for themselves. That is why I don't spoonfeed and don't support spoonfeeding. For reasons I do not even want to bother to understand, as I am on the waiting list for the Evo 3D and will never again buy any Samsung product, though I would like to have at least basic mobile phone capabilities until the end of June, my Epic has died. It got to the point I would have to remove the battery every 10 minutes and restart. I would get all these Touchwiz errors. So I decided to hard reset, at least so I could have a phone. I'll reinstall apps when I get my Evo 3D. So I removed the SD card, and went to Settings-Security and initiated a hard reset. That was four hours ago and the SAMSUNG logo is appearing as when you restart the device, and staying put. Is the hard reset this long? What should I do? This phone, which I've had since last fall, has been the worst experience of my life, and that doesn't even count the Froyo fiasco of a few months ago. Good riddance to Samsung. I bought a Moto Xoom, which has worked flawlessly over the past month on Honeycomb. It's nice to know that there are some Android devices that don't cause so much pain and suffering that you want to scream as does this horrid Samsung phone. But I need a phone for the next 2 and a half weeks before the Evo 3D makes an appearance, so I would dearly love to know what to do at this point! Thanks in advance.
Hard reset shouldn't take more than 3 or 4 minutes.
Is your phone rooted? Are you on a custom ROM? Do you know how to use ODIN?

Read it carefully, Do exactly as it says. Do NOT unplug the phone until they tell you to.

I am looking for assistance, not your petty judgment. The root issue had to do with a recommendation from this very forum. Thank you for your non-help. Yet another reason that I wish to leave Samsung forums. I hope Samsung is paying you for your good work.

The thing is u blame samsung for all of it when it probably was user error. But u don't want to hear that.

Just need to mention that my first instinct was to criticize too. It comes from the tone and attitude of your original post. Most of us in this group like our Epics, and in my case it has been the best phone I have ever owned. I have found that the few problems I have had with it have come from my mistakes, installing poorly designed ROMS, etc. I'm back on the stock Sprint ROM and have a rock solid well performing phone. Maybe you have a lemon, but without knowing the history I'm not going to judge.
Anyway, best of luck getting the phone revived.

I followed POIT's recommendations, and I have my phone back, worked like a charm, thanks. I understand the issues, but this phone has been a challenge. When I got it I was "promised" a 2.2 upgrade within weeks, quickly ran out of space with no ability to put apps on the SD card, and then what ensued was four months of FROYO chaos. Enough. I hope you all enjoy your Epics, shortly I'll be in Evo 3D land, and I think more content.

First off, when a person seems to know enough to go and root their phone yet doesn't bother to go about finding the information to setting it back to stock which is a sticky in the dev section, yes I'm going to make note.
When a person goes and creates problems for themselves and then wants to blame the product for their own inability to follow directions and be ready for a failure, that person needs to learn the hard way, I'm sorry ignorance should be painful.
Now, I wish I was being paid by Samsung, hell, I'd take a free WiThin, but alas I'm not, I actually came over from the EVO because I had too many issues with it.
I'm one of the first people to call a company out for a poor product or poor service, in this case the issue arrived from neither, the issue was your own doing.
I made some of the same mistakes and semi-bricked my Epic, I was able to Odin it back to stock by reading how to on this forum, not by posting a thread bashing the Epic because I was too lazy, impatient and ignorant to educate myself.

Your quote above speaks volumes about yourself. You do not spend your time assisting others, instead insulting them, calling them names. Apparently this community should be in reverence to someone of your self-described qualities. I am not lazy, a bit impatient, and not ignorant. Perhaps I don't have your skills in searching through archives, but I think the skill you might want to focus on for yourself in the future concerns developing social skills. Why would you want to contribute or be a member of a forum when instead of assisting you decide to deride? I have had many issues with the Epic these past nine months, and God forbid a little bit of my frustration bubbled to the surface. I am about to leave this forum for good (thanking again those who did assist me), and so there will be one less person for you to insult.
This threads abit useless so I have a question.
How do u do Hard reset? My phone locked up once and I held idk what buttons for like 1min and it rebooted. But now idk what or how I did it =(

Use Odin. The hard reset wont help /system/ corruption (TW, etc.). You have to odin or flash a rom at this point. Pull battery, hold 1 on keyboard and power, set up odin/heimdall on computer, plug in phone, flash using odin.

Oh... on froyo its power, volume up and camera. On GB, there is nothing but a good old fashion battery pull.

For reasons I do not even want to bother to understand, as I am on the waiting list for the Evo 3D and will never again buy any Samsung product, though I would like to have at least basic mobile phone capabilities until the end of June, my Epic has died. It got to the point I would have to remove the battery every 10 minutes and restart. I would get all these Touchwiz errors. So I decided to hard reset, at least so I could have a phone. I'll reinstall apps when I get my Evo 3D. So I removed the SD card, and went to Settings-Security and initiated a hard reset. That was four hours ago and the SAMSUNG logo is appearing as when you restart the device, and staying put. Is the hard reset this long? What should I do? This phone, which I've had since last fall, has been the worst experience of my life, and that doesn't even count the Froyo fiasco of a few months ago. Good riddance to Samsung. I bought a Moto Xoom, which has worked flawlessly over the past month on Honeycomb. It's nice to know that there are some Android devices that don't cause so much pain and suffering that you want to scream as does this horrid Samsung phone. But I need a phone for the next 2 and a half weeks before the Evo 3D makes an appearance, so I would dearly love to know what to do at this point! Thanks in advance.
