Hi,
I've posted pretty much the same yesterday in the development section in Amon_RA recovery thread, but figured it wasn't the best thing to do, so I'm moving my questions here, where they have probably belonged all along...(and I'll edit my post there)
I'm not exactly noob when it comes to PC, Linux, phones and stuff, but I've been trying to make some sense of this SPL and radio stuff for days for the fear of bricking my phone (it's rather expensive, after all) and the more I read, the more confused I in fact become. It seems to me there's a lot of contradicting info available here in the forums.
First, I've got the 32A european HTC branded Magic:
PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.33.0009 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-3.22.20.17

Now, on the thread about Amon_RA recovery, it says in big red letters "Make sure your phone is rooted and that you are using an engineerings SPL". Also, a few pages into the very same thread, there's this:
skittleguy said:
If you can confirm it works through fastboot, then you can also do this:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RAv1.1(G or H, depending on your version).img
This will flash it to your phone. Note that you'll need an engineering SPL for this.

However, when I rooted my phone a few weeks back, I used Amon_RA recovery 1.2.0 - the latest at the time - without flashing it permanently to make nandroid backup of the unrooted phone and then to apply the necessary patches to root my phone succesfuly. Then I flashed the Amon_RA recovery without any problems directly into the phone and been using it since, even did some nandroid backups and restores without any problems at all. Should this even be possible without the engineering SPL (which I figure I don't have, it being .0009 and S-ON)? If I understood the SPL info correctly, it shouldn't, but I was still able to do it...So how come?
Also, can I perhaps try to flash some custom ROM for 32A without the risk of bricking the device? Am I right in my understanding that pretty much the only way to brick the phone is to start messing with radio and SPL? So is there any risk involved in just downloading a ROM, wiping the phone, flashing the update to see if it works without tampering with radio/SPL?
As for the Hero ROMs, once again, do I need to update radio and/or SPL to make them work or can I just try? And if I DO update them (I gather the .2005 SPL should work in my Magic, not really sure about radios, though) and I want to go back to my original ROM for some reason (given that I have nandroid backup available), will I be required to downgrade radio/SPL back as well (therefore be once again exposed to the risk of bricking the phone)?
Thanks for any clarifications on these. If someone can direct me to some clear info on the issues, I'll gladly take that, but as I've said, most of the informations I've dug out the past few days (and weeks, actually) only deepen my confusion. I'm quite sure my questions have probably been answered a lot of times before, but this forum is so packed with information it's becoming hard to actually find exactly what you're looking for, even if you try to do so. Thanks again.
Alright i got the first mytouch when it came out and rooted it using the JA something rom. I did have to do the goldcard method to get the "unhackable" spl changed. I also believe i changed it from a 32a to a 32b or visa versa.
My question is please let me know what i need to put on this forum for people to help me get this thing reflashed, i just need to do a wipe and flash (the phones been screwing up, like phone process FC everytime a phone call comes in (still takes the phone call but may just close randomly).
The only thing i DONT want to do is brick this thing (of course). So whatever information you guys need to help me in the right direction would be great. SPL version, recovery menu version, radio version, with a quick way of getting to that (power off, power on w/ volume held or whatever).
So like i said, sorry i do sound like a complete newb but its been a while since i touched did anything to this thing. Big THANKS ahead of time guys.
heres what i got so far
Heres what i got out of it so far

Yes, if you have an engineering SPL, which you do not. You'll need to flash a stock ROM.
do not flash an eng spl. Our phones do not run on anything other then stock radio and spl. Also, even though it is a 32a board, only g1 /32b roms and recoveries work.
What happened to you makes no sense unless your leaving something out or tried to flash an ota Rom.
Take battery out, put it back in /hold home and power, should go into recovery. If not, I would say follow my guide in Sig to start over but you'll probably screw up on flashing the radio and spl.
you flashed a wrong radio, man

lol Oops Didnt catch that. HEs right, you have the G1 radio going. Ours should be .12 at the end... I think lol. I havent had to mess with it for a while since Universal Androot works now. But again, you may want to start over if you know what your doing. Otherwise, time to go get a replacement because flashing the radio and spl, your probably going to brick it anyway.

Umm..what?
Your radio/SPL are fine. As for your situation, did you root using the goldcard method? If you did, try doing it over and see if it'll let you into fastboot after loading the engineering sappimg.

Some roms take 10-15 min to boot up so you just gota have patience .
Also, any roms built with a Cyan kernel after 5.0.8 will work on our phones also.
IS the location working on that rom for you?
When it first cam eout I used it for months with no problems.. but then I tried to go back a few days ago and the weather/clock will not find me.
yeah with wifi it picks up my location for the weather just fine

only on wifi? thats weird. That would explain why it keeps asking for wifi to be on though lol.
You wont belive it but this f***in ohone has just gone and done the same problem again.....
I was charging it then powered off the device then turned it on after 30mins and its now stuck on the HBOOT screen AGAIN - grrrrrr i cant belive this thing
So now im completey stuck again - if this happens everything i charge this thing then thats not gonna be cool.
Im trying this method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734617 , posted by DonJuan692006
but because the phone cant boot up into the OS adb doesnt see it as list of devices so i cant do the goldcard and start again.....
hmmmm i might throw this thing outta the window
Without a goldcard your not going to be able to go that route. If you've still got your Hero, you can use it to make the goldcard, or any Android powered device for that matter. Maybe just wait it out and see if it just starts working as before?
i have a successful goldcard.img from my Hero will take be ok to use for the Fender you thinks ?
damm-it just tried that and SAPPIMG gives an Incorrect Model ID - because im using the Hero goldcard
damm i dont know what else to try
does anyone have a Fender Goldcard img they would like to share with me - proberly wont work but you never know i might get lucky
cheers
So my wife just upgraded her phone and i was left with a stock MyTouch 3g with 3.5mm headphone jack and I thought I would expand my Android knowledge base and see what I could do with it. I am not knew to Android and I have a Samsung Vibrant that I can pretty much do whatever I want with. The Galaxy line is extremely easy compared to this device.
So I did my fair share or reading and research and was able to root the phone with Universal Androot and installed busybox via titanium backup. I downloaded ROM manager from the market and flashed clockwork recovery. I used recovery to installl CM 5.0.8 DS and once it reboots in wont load past the mytouch splash.
This is what I started with:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0013
CPLD-13
RADIO-2.22.23.02
Oct 21 2009, 22:33:27
And this is what it reads now:
SAPPHIRE UNKNOWN 32B ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2010 (SAPP31000)
CPLD-13
RADIO-2.22.23.02

I read that Binary said that it is really a 32B not an A so to stick with the B ROMs. I can also access fastboot and recovery.
The easy part with the Vibrant is that if I screw up the phone you can just simply Odin back to stock and start over, but the mytouch is a little more complex than that. So basically I want to get back to stock and start over. There are so many threads and links that say user friendly but I didn't find it quite user friendly. I must just be spoiled with the Galaxy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's not a rush or it's not my daily driver. Just a toy phone now to learn on.
Thanks!
mod edit because of inaccurate information.
So you are saying if I just follow the normal root guide for the fender 1.2 that I should be good?

NO! Damn it! Listen to me everybody! The 1.2 device (Fender, etc) are a 32A/32B hybrid. The ONLY thing that makes this phone ANY different than the regular 23B MyTouch devices is the additional ram. That's it! You CANNOT fit a 32A ROM on the device because it lacks the internal storage. Even if you COULD the kernel for that rom would require a 32A radio. You cannot use a 32A radio because the 1.33.0013 32A s-ON spl requires the 32B radio. And it requires a 32B radio else it will brick. The 1.33.0013 is the S-ON stock SPL that the phone requires to use the memory map. If you try the Engineering SPL (1.33.2010 32B S-ON) the phone might boot, but you will not have touch screen or the use of the headphone jack because of the different drivers and memory map. When you flash the Engineering SPL it will read 32B because that is what is needed to flash the custom recovery and roms. However your device will not work properly because it's a 32A/32B hybrid. You need the 32A stock firmware (1.33.0013 S-ON) for the phone to operate. You also need the appropriate 32B radio and rom as well.
I have the phone and I've had it since it's release. I started off by making custom roms for it and ports before roms were using VoxLuna's driver patch. Trust me when I say that I know a little about this damn phone!
You know what... to hell with it. Do whatever you want. Don't be sending me private messages begging for help when you brick your device because you think it's a 32A.
custom ported rom #1
custom ported rom #2
custom ported rom #3
custom rom #1
They all require 1.33.0013 S-ON with 32B radio.

The problem. You forgot to mention that you also flashed a non-perfected SPL at some point before flashing CM 5.0.8. You need to get that fixed. Luckily you can fix it without a goldcard since you've already got S-OFF.
Download these:
hboot.nb0 for myTouch 1.2 only
Amon Ra 1.7.0-G Recovery
Go to this URL and follow the steps to get ADB setup if you don't already have it. Then go here and follow steps 7, 8, and 9. In step 7, you should only need to run:
fastboot flash hboot hboot.nb0 (the 0 at the end of this line is a zero not an oh).
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
After that just reflash CM 5.0.8, although I'm using CM 6.1 and it's just as good, but with the perks of Android 2.2. I would suggest reading through that thread I linked to get more familiarity.
Lastly, I will warn you that this isn't the easiest way to get your phone fixed, but this is the way that I learned about my phone, so it should help you out in that aspect. I'm sure mumilover or someone else may come along with a simpler solution.
If you have any problems, let us know here.

And I thought the Vibrant forums were hostile. I am glad that you have had your phone for so long and I am quite sure you know what you are talking about. Like I stated, this phone is just sitting around the house collecting dust and thought I would mess with it. If I brick it... great. If I make it the fastest MyTouch it can be... great.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what you and all the other developers and contributors do for random users like myself, but give a guy a break. You have to admit that this phone is a little dated and it's like knowing how to run Windows Vista and 7 then going back to do the same things on a Commadore.

Exactly, all he needs is a custom G recovery (which he should have) and then flash the 1.33.0013 stock spl BACK on. Afterwards, he can flash any 32B rom he wants and it should work as long as it's later than CM-4.2.15.

My apologies, Binary. Following forums over time you tend to see so much hostility over pretty much nothing. It's a learning experience. Just as I had to learn my other phone, some things the hard way, I will be able to steer people in the right direction and help others after I get this one down.

I'm not trying to be hostile but all of the information is available here in the forums. The developers, senior members and moderators like myself have spent HUNDREDS OF HOURS making sure it can be referenced one way or another. They are in stickies and even in MY SIGNATURE. The only other thing we can do for you is do it ourselves! Yet even with a clean and clear explaination this still comes up. We even get some people that post threads saying that they bricked their phones because they thought for sure it was a 32A and they try to hold me responsible. I will be happy to forward some hateful e-mails to you that I get at least 2 or 3 times a week average because people couldn't find the information... yet... if they followed rule #1 of the forums... they wouldn't have the problem.
Look... at least you got the right information and avoided bricking your phone. But I really hate repeating myself over and over again with the same information so I need to be tougher to get my point across otherwise other members will likely use the wrong information and end up breaking their phones... which I will not be held liable for!

I tried flashing the same CM and it gets past the mytouch splash but doesn't go past the next loading X screen.
From what you guys said everything is looking right. Any thing look out of ordinary or sound crazy from what i'm saying?

Loading X screen?
What rom are you trying to install?
What kernel?
And now i'm in like tube socks! I just woke up and tried it again and it booted right up.
Binary, it was the same CM 5.0.8-DS. As far as the kernel goes, I didn't flash any separate. The X boot screen I mentioned is the Nexus One load screen (I believe).
The only thing that I did differently this morning was wipe/factory reset, then davlik.
Okay... so from my understanding now:
I have to have a perfected SPL, not an engineering SPL.
I have to use the custom (AMAN RA) recovery and never use ClockworkMod.
Ensure that any other roms I want are 32b.
Now as far as the radio goes, is it best to stay with the radio it came with?
Again, thanks for the advice!

Don, two things...
1. I searched through the ROM bible and didn't find any place to download 6.1.
2. When I try to download the Google Apps from the page you sent me the link to yesterday, it asks for a user name and password. I have 5.0.8 up and running, but with no market and things like that.
Thanks!

Now as far as the radio goes, is it best to stay with the radio it came with?
Again, thanks for the advice!

You can use clockwork. I use it without any problems. Some people like AmonRa better though. If you run CM6 there have been issues about people not being able to flash the recovery for some reason. Just keep trying and it will stick eventually. Just make sure that you flash the one for MyTouch/Ion devices.
Radio - keep the one that your using.
Roms - 32B ONLY
I am new to Android and this is my first device.... Previously, owned HTC P3600, HTC Diamond 2 and now got the HTC Magic today.
I read the Development section and question section...
Just want to confirm the following about it:
Q:1: Is SPL must for custom rom or root can do it for me?
As i read in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756918 that it is optional but like in windows it is must to load custom rom... confused!
Q:2: Do the company radio works or i have to load custom radio?
Q:3: Is android too easy to brick as far i remember my all last windows mobiles come alive again what ever i flash to it....?
My Device currently running:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.33.0010 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12
RADIO 3.22.20.17

Yes it's easy to brick if you just start flashing things without doing your research. The best/easiest way to root is to use one of the many programs available that will do it for you without the risk of bricking. I'll let someone else comment on upgrading your radio, but I can tell you that you will not have to update it. There are ROM's that will work with that radio just fine.

You should just follow the instructions for your particular device. Since there are dozens of different MyTouch devices and many of them are different in a variety of ways then it can be argued that there are better methods bearing better results than others. In a nutshell, there is no universal answer to your question. Being unfamiliar with your SPL (HBOOT-1.33.00.10???) I can't even begin to point you in the correct direction. Can you verify that information please?
In most cases it is recommened that you have an Engineering SPL for fastboot access. From there you can easily flash a custom recovery which in turn will allow you to flash a custom rom (along with making system backups, data wiping, etc) but neither are hardly a requirement. Radio? Again... depends on what you have specifically. Some roms require a certain radio or it will fail to even load. And only certain devices with certain SPL's (yours being 1.33.00.10???) can use certain radio types. The danger comes in when you attempt to flash an incompatible radio with the wrong SPL. This is why it is crucial to verify ALL information before beginning.
Any recommended SPL for mine device...?
I believe the OP meant to put 1.33.2010 for his SPL but I don't want to speculate. Could you please post your fastboot information again and double-check that it is correct.

Yes, i rewrite it.... Here is the details....

Q1) Yes the spl is optional. When newbies (which are the main target of the guide you linked too) come here, they are looking for an easy upgrade. Playing around with spl and such is not a good idea, unless you do your research... Sadly only 1 out of 100 do that. That's why the custom recovery is a perfect solution. You really have to do some stupid **** before you COMPLETELY **** up your device. Plus you can do almost anything using custom recovery.
Flashing a spl ( as i write in my guide) is only valid if you know some shell commands, know the difference between img and zip files, plus understand how the device is build around the different partitions, e.g. radio, system, misc ect. Sadly only few uses the time to understand the above and we have like 1-3 every day crying for help.
SO - only flash spl if you know what you are doing or have done the research.
Q2) There are no custom radios. Only stock. For your device, the 32A or more correctly the CPLD-12, there are 2 different combos of radio/spl/recovery you can use.
Read around for more info as this has been written like 100 times :0)
Q3) Well, it depends :0)
If you play around with spl or radio you can brick your device. Again to understand why here is some simplified info.
Spl - Secondary program loader - is the data that has to be loaded when the device wakes up. When you push power button, the hardware wakes up, and follows VERY SPECIFIC steps to activate all the internal components. When it's semi done, it goes for the spl to load the rest. The spl always has to be on the same place or the device will not know where to look. The device is like child(which is born again every time you hit the power). When you hit the power button, it have some instincts(the steps) then it gets more and more intelligent as time goes by and more and more data is been loaded and processed. Think of the spl as the first part of computers BIOS. When the spl loads, it has to get some info about the complicated hardware, like the screen, antenna, sound ect. That's what the radio is for. So the spl has to know WHERE to look for the radio, and the radio has to be in a certain format or the spl will be confused. Remember, we are very early in the loading process of the device, so the data is very machine-close and in a very specific format.
When the spl is done, and the radio has been processed, then it will look at the boot partition for info on how to load the OS. The boot partition has info about how to load the OS and the different partitions, e.g. userdata, system ect. It will also try to load the kernel which is the CORE of the OS. It handles the ram, filesystem, I/O, mount of sdcard ect.
BACK TO THE POINT:
If you mess up the first part (spl or radio) then your bricked. You device is like a 2 week old child and is useless. It wakes up, poops on you and sleeps again.
So, DON'T **** UP THE SPL OR RADIO.
If you mess up the rest, you can still recover the device. Some times that can be very limited because of the perfected spl, but that's for another thread :0)
So, for your device, follow my guide and you should be good to go. If you are confident, then flash eng spl also :0)
It's up to you to decide....
Good luck
Thanks everyone i ended up making the device rooted and flashed the custom recovery for a moment....
I have no plan to **** my SPL or radio and play with it later like football....
So, i am happy that i have now rooted and custom recovery installed... Any easy guide to load the rom?
Thank you everyone....
Download ROM, copy to root of SD card, boot into recovery, select flash ZIP from SD card, select ROM .zip file. That's the general idea, but some ROM's require that you flash extra files. For example CyanogenMod will require that you also flash a Google Add-on file.
Any rom that don't require any extra work and flash directly?
Come on... you started this thread perfectly... now don't mess it up.
Read around, do some research. You will find 90 % of your questions has already been answered within the first 10 threads...
Ok, thnx for your reply... i got the rom but i am scared that many refer to have nandbackup to restore if something goes wrong... and i didn't found the step by step guide to do so.... and yes one more problem appered my htc sync no longer detect the device.... i am still looking for the solution to this....
