Hi I found this problem recently with all newer Builds. If I watch movies or play any game for at least 45 min I think the phone over heats and freezes.
I used to watch a bunch of movie before in older builds without this problem but at the time those build had a bunch of lil problems so that's why I don't go back to those build and the builds are perfect and this is the only problem I get.
I want to know if u dont have this problem what Radio you are using and windows mobile I dont think its a problem with the builds but a combination of maybe RADIO and winmo.
My Radio is 2_12_50_02_2 and wimo is ChuckyDroidROM I also should say that I think is the Radio I dont like messing with them cause some might brick ur phone that why I would like to see what radio u using before I try to use them.
Yeah... I have the same problem and I can't get over it.
I checked the temps for my phone last night, droped the battery to 40% and started charging it.
Was watching a movie with the phone charging, audio thru bluetooth, WiFi on screen on (of course ), and after almost 2 hours the temp went up to 37C, and thats tge highest I saw it.
Im using desire_hd2 Build by Cedes.
zephyrot what Radio and wimo are using?
Using Stock Deutschland ROM 3.14.407.2. With Stock Radio.
Everything working perfectly so far, been running Android for a few months, always on Stock ROMs without issues. (Unbranded Stock ROM btw).
Gonna make a stress test and post the temp results in a bit.
Did the tests.
1.5 Hrs with: Charging Phone + Music in the background + Wifi + Bluetooth + CPU @ 1.19GHz + Neocore on infinite Loop >> 38C highest temp.
Did the same test with Nenamark, and got the same results.
Ambient temp: 22 C.
Ill try another test with GPS + GMaps + Music thru bluetooth + Charging tomorrow and check the temps.
Thans zephirot I have a TmobileUSA hd2 so I dont know if i can havethat radio but it sould hlp ppl with the normal hd2... also the build i have everything works i can listen to music all day with no poblems.
The problems start when watching movies like for an hour or a bit less the phone would get a temp of like 40 C and freeze.
The latest T-Mobile ROM should have that radio (2.15.something), just be sure to check out SSPL/SPL/HSPL compatibility, since 3.03 SPL is not compatible yet with latest HSPL. Leaving ya at 64 MB usable ram
Kinda weird your high temps, you using SetCPU? Try lowering the MAX Speed to 998Mhz (1.19Ghz should run just fine), and use one of the latest Builds.
Best ones so far for me have been:

And:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857261
The second being more tricky and requiring some work to work as intented, but BY FAR the fastest Build I've used

the HSPL is the thing I install before changing roms right?
I remember I install like 2.008
almost solved
ok ppls I've try changing the wm rom and Radio and for what ive found the phone will free either way no matter what So I think it has to be a problem with the newer builds.
My build is overclock but I had it to not go over the normal amount of speed 900 MHz and the phone would freeze after watching a movie for at least 40 min.
Now what I found that if you underclock the CPU like I did to 400-500 the phone would last much much longer even when charging. I got like 2 hours of movie and then let it cool down while charging.
also I dont know if this is important but I use Rockplayer to watch my movies and this couldnt be the reason for the freeze either cause ive been using it forever.
But I hope this help any other person who had this kind of problems.
Im having same issue but it gets hot and restart after 10-20 minutes of hard use.
Im having theory it could be microSD card getting hot becouse of phone. IM not sure.
but i tried different ROMS, radios and Androids its the same problem.
deniboy try lowring the cpu speed with set cpu to 400-500 I had it and 400 and see how it goes.
also everything else works fine on my build like Internet speed always fast no disconect and no errors this is the only thing bothering me.

400 minimum or maximum and with what governor????
I have it on ondemand dont know if there is a difference but I do know it will run cooler and the cpu runs slower

i know this might b a stupid question and a question that has been asked alot... i did a search and couldnt find an answer but my question is what is the highest you overclocked your phone and it was stable? im currently running at 240 stable and im sure this will answer alot of questions for anybody who is new to overclocking thx in advanced
dont really think that that many people push it to the max
as both ram speed and sd ram interface being a much bigger bottleneck then cpu
so overclock is more likely to cost precious batt time then anything usefull
I've noticed that my MDA becomes unstable after 230 or so. I'm using an old 1.08 IPL/SPL rom if that has anything to do with it. I have Battery Status so I just use the CPU scaler and it works pretty well.
I'm running @ 232 and have been for months with no noticeable additional battery drain. Running a more-or-less stock WM5.
When i have some high quality video files or a bit more complex software that wizard can't handle at standard frequency (like quake), i run it @260MHZ without any problems. I went up to 273MHz a few times, and it worked fine with TCPMP, but i never used this setting for more than about 20 minutes. When i used different programs (not only the video player) and switched between them (read: normal pda use) i had a few system frezes @273MHz, so i don't consider it a safe setting
I use Battery Status to scale between 147 to 247 with boost set to 260. I have never once in 4 months had it lock up. I use a very stable rom though so that has to help. When using other less stable roms I was getting lock ups often.

Hi,
I have been using my HD2 with android for a long time without too much trouble. Not long ago, while still using SD builds I would find that my phone would often freeze, this would happen almost always while surfing the web or playing games or while putting the phone under heavy load. Using nand builds the issue has gotten even worse. Every single build I have tried is almost certain to freeze during the initial setup, even if I leave it alone and give it a long time to setup and stabilize. I have been using a stock gingerbread NAND build for a week or so and it just won't be stable. It freezes during games or surfing the web mostly (though upon first installing the build, almost anything might trigger a freeze, including scrolling through a menu). I have tried task 29, and many builds but they are all giving me this issue. Even the last WINMO rom I tried did the same. I am completely baffled by this and have no idea what could be wrong. Does any one have any advise?
Thanks
Pray that you're still under warranty???
If it does it in winmo, try flashing your original stock (From HTC) ROM. This will remove HSPL and any & all customisations. Make sure the phone is in it's 'from factory' state. If it STILL has freezing issues, you need to get it repaired. If not. Start installing ROMs again from scratch.
Hope This Helps.
Thanks for the response. Yeah, I have done everything except resort to the stock ROM.
I have noticed some interesting things about the crashing behavior. If the phone has been left alone for a while, it will be able to browse the web/ play games or do intensive tasks without crashing for a decent amount of time, however once it crashes , it will very likely crash right away after I reboot. I only notice the phone (battery) is quite warm around the time it starts the crashing. I hope my hardware is screwed up, would hate to give up this phone . I bought my phone on ebay, so I don't think I have warranty either. ugh
wtf, there is seriously no one else who has heard of this?
Bump.
Are you Overclocking it? Try Underclocking it to see if it is more stable. Maybe your hardware is failing. User currentWidget to see your current usage.
Maybe you're using too much ram. o.o
The phone will get really laggy if you use up all the ram, so clear it up with a task killer.
No overclock, running at 998 (stock) and smartass governor. Tried interactive governor and still does it.
Its just strange that it crashes left and right from doing anything when I first install a build and after a few reboots it stabilizes enough to be rock solid for all tasks except playing something like angry birds or surfing the web. I tried running quadrant 10 times in a row to stress the phone and it did fine.
Could the phone be overheating? I notice its almost always warm or hot when it crashes.

Actually this is exactly what you should do. Flash with a Stock ROM then Take29 then start over. Remember the Stock ROM has more than just the system ROM, it overwrite your RADIO and other stuff also that are not touched by custom ROM. so if you have some corruption at radio ROM the stock ROM should fix it.
- When I mean Underclocking: set MAX Frequency to 800 Mhz and see if it is more stable. just to find the root cause by elimination

I'll try to cap it at 800 Mhz and see if I can cause a crash. Regardless Its probably best to flash to stock rom.
Here is what I think I'll do:
Flash to stock rom.
Reflash HSPL
Task 29
Flash new radio
Flash MAGLDR
Flash new android rom
So I flashed 2.10.1 stock rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655653
And it did not remove HSPL...though it reset my radio to 2.08.
So far things are not looking good. On the very first boot the stock winmo rom crashed and rebooted. Should I flash another winmo rom?
EDIT:
I've reflashed HSPL and also flashed the latest winmo stock rom with Radio 2.15 now. Running Android off the SD card, 2 minutes of angry birds is all it took it to freeze it. I'm starting to believe there must be some hardware damage or something, this is making no sense.
Even surfing the web in the stock winmo rom caused a reboot, the phone is getting quite hot too.
Having exact same problem... should i warranty it and send it in?

If you are lucky enough to still have warranty, do it. I don't have that option sadly.
So I have pretty much narrowed down the cause of the problem to overheating. I let the phone cool down to about 25c and then I ran angry birds and surfed the web and it didn't crash and I played for about 15 minutes. When the temp approaches about 37-40c, the chances of a crash become pretty high, once it crashes it will keep crashing left and right until I let it cool back down.
All evidence now points to an overheating problem. Especially because it is only intensive tasks which seem to cause crashes and only the more CPU/GPU intensive tasks can cause the phone to heat up fast.
Anyone else dealt with this issue? I have no other way to prevent this than to stop heavy use of the phone when it gets warm. This is ridiculous, next thing I know, I'll be walking around with a desktop CPU heatsink mounted on my HD2...
First post WOOO
I have been having a similar issue with my HD2 (Telstra). I was running darkstone on the SD card but occasionally my phone would freeze then I would have to restart a few times to get it working (or leave it for a while). I decided to install the android desire stock ROM using NAND. I changed the radio according to the recommended 2.15.50.14.. after I did this I had a lot of problems with frequent freezing even before installing the new ROM (so during the process). I did successfully install the stock ROM but I now have the issue where if I enable internet usage within about 5 minutes my phone will freeze (but only if I am using the phone). However if I use wi-fi or usb tethering I can use the net for anywhere between 5 minutes and 8-9 hours.
I also have the problem of freezing just after boot, but apart from that my phone has never frozen unless I enable internet usage. Furthermore, this issue only became frequent after changing radios. (for the life of me I can't remember what the previous radio was). When I have more stable internet access I'll try flashing a few different radio's...
But right now funnily enough.. I'm jumping between my phone internet and someones open network in my apartment block... both of which are very sporadic...
Hope this helps somewhat (or will at least..)
There are many threads regarding this issue. If you still have the problem after trying different radios and roms, then it is probably the mainboard.
Mine was also overheating and after I tried all possible fixes, I sent it for repair. They changed the mainboard and everything is OK now. No overheating at all.
Hi guys. I've been running the Android Stock Desire build from Cotulla for a few months now. Every once in a while I'd get a freeze, but then a battery in, and out would fix the problem (usually within the first try. sometimes I need to do this a few times, but no more than 5 times)
However, since last Friday my phone has been crashing like crazy! Constant crashes at random stages, and even reboots. Removing the battery also didnt guarantee a fix. I think I may have tried it about a hundred times, and Android just crashed at a random point in time during every boot. Eventually it booted, but since then it has crashed again! I figured that perhaps I should try a newer build.
I've decided to try out this build: [08.MAR.2011][CWM]TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 RC2 v2.5.4[2.3.3][A2SD/RAM][rafpigna OC 1.8]. Since I already have radio 2.15.50.14, these are the steps I've taken:
- Flash Task29 (ShaDrac version).
- Flash MAGLDR 1.13
- Flash ClockworkMod Recovery v1.3 135M System
- Flash CM7
Now, even during the various stages before flashing the CM7 rom, I would get freezes during the MAGLDR 1.13 bootscreen, or recovery won't load and I'll get stuck on the GOGOGO screen. Also, copying the zip file over in the MAGLDR mass storage mode won't work, and causes a freeze when I start the copy. Reset, or Battery removal seems to get me to the next step again.
Eventually I've flashed CM7, but now it freezes at the setup stage.
I'm starting to think maybe its not the various Android builds that I'm trying, but perhaps the problem lies somewhere else on the phone? Any ideas? Is my radio perhaps not the best one for the phone (even though its the latest)?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Regards,
XA83
Shameless bump (hope I'm not breaking any rules!)
I realize this post should have probably been under the CM7 thread as well, but I don't have access to that yet due to my low post count...
Could be:
*Wrong CWM Size, check in the rom thread for information
*leftover data, task 29 and reinstall everything
*Corrupted data on SD card, try booting without sd card to see if this is the case.
Thanks for the reply.
I've removed both the SD card and the SIM card. Phone seems to work flawlessly. Boots CM7 without a hitch. Next step I've added the SD card back, and formatted the card from the CM7 settings page. Still perfect.
I've tried it about 5 times now and every time the SIM card is not present, the phone works like a dream. Every time I put the SIM card in, CM7 crashes within the first few seconds of showing the home screen.
Finally, some progress!! Thanks again for the assistance. However, what dis this mean? Could this be related to the actual SIM card I'm using, or does it have to do with the part where it initiates the network connection and possibly the 3g connection?
*Also, just for information, I believe that I do have the correct CMW size. The build indicates "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery v1.3 135M System" which is the one I've flashed.
maybe reflash back to winmo then do evrything all overagain to android
I doubt it's an issue with the phone and its initiating with the sim card. Just replace the sim card
the SAGA continues
Hi Guys,
So since my last posts I have actually managed to get the phone running Typhoon's CM7 and its been working great... for a while.
I'm currently on version 3.0.4 and I still get:
1) Freezes,
2) Reboots,
3) SOD,
4) This happened today: phone cuts mid-phone call and makes a loud buzzing noise until I pull the battery.
I'm thinking more towards hardware problem at the moment, but please let me know what you think, and what I can do to debug the sitaution. Is there perhaps a hardware monitoring app that I can install that logs the whole system every 1 minute that I'll be able to pick something up.
I was also thinking maybe the phone overheats. As explained in my original post, whenever a crash or reboot occurs, it would sometimes not restart the first time round after pulling the battery out and putting it back in. Sometimes I get crashes even during the MAGLDR stage with "fatal hit" and strange things like that. Or even when I boot into CWM sometimes.
Now, to test this overheating, I've experimented with placing my phone in the fridge for 5 minutes after a crash. Thusfar I've done this 3 times, and every time I get a clean boot when I put the cold battery back in and then the phone functions perfectly for a while.
So, overheating, or do I perhaps need another radio? I'm out of ideas.
Any help will be much appreciated. The problem now is that I'm so used to android that I wont be able to go back to winmo or even blackberry
Regards,
XA83
it happens to my phone, and did on my previous HD2.
I've tried every build, task 29, every radio...new sd card....everything.
matt
Are there any apps we can run to test battery temp, cpu temp, cpu voltage or anything like that? I'm pretty effecient at debugging PC hardware issues, but when it comes to my phone I feel like I'm back in the stoneage!
Please help
I have tried over and over and over and over on this kind of issue.
most if the time was some unfinished coppied file which can;t runs properly on roms.
Try to asks ROM developer.
- SD partition : how many partititons?
- SD partitions : what kind of partitions, is it using etc 2/3/4, does it comes with swap etc?
- Installation method : does it needs to clear phone ROM with cwr ? what is the size?
HD2 usually I will go for 400M size
- config.txt settings for SD/NAND.
A proper guide could helps you on in the installations
If you guys are having overheating problems resulting in freezes, you might want to use SETCPU and set a lower maximum frequency. Something like 800-900 mhz might keep your cpu's from getting too hot. Or maybe setting it to a different governor could help too, idk for sure.

Possible solution, Thanks mate,
I changed the CPU speed to 1036 Mhz from stock 998 Mhz speeds and haven't had a Freeze yet,
before that The touch screen would freeze occasionaly when there was a lot of activity like in games such as fruit ninja ....
a Lower CPU speed such as 806 Mhz also seemed to do the trick ...
I don't understand why the Freezes would occur at stock speeds ...
I'll have to give it a few days though ...

Update:
Tried that with Interactive Governer, it still freezes on odd occasions, and the battery temp shows 33-36 Degrees Celcius on load when running games ...
i'm beginning to think the freeze is temperature related, as it never freezes while it's cool ...
I'm going to try running it with Smartass governer and see if it makes any difference ...
regards.
Yeah, there's been alot of HD2 owners who've had high-temp related freezes, one guy even went as far as to dissassemble his phone, re-bond the cpu to his mainboard, and add a home-made heat sync to prevent further overheating (successfully)
I just figured changing the cpu freq or governor might reduce cpu load, or increase efficiency, resulting in less overheating. But I feel pretty confident in saying that you guys' freezes are very likely coming from heat. It was even a problem in stock WinMo roms

freezing
i realy didnt undrestand what the exactly means of freeze, my phone freeze after change rom ,i can't use "TyphooN CyanogenMod " becuz my phone freeze at the android logo and it didnt any animation to boot !!!
i have hspl8 , radio 2.15.50 ,Recovery_130M_system_4M_cache[v3.0.2.4],mgldr 13.
i install windows then install android but it steel frezz, i can install just HyperDroid-GBX rom !!
it this problem fix with cpu temp ??
i get it in Refrigerator still feee !!
Temperature
Hi guys. It's definitely the overheating causing all the freezes. I've now succesfully "fixed" my phone 11/11 times by placing it in the freezer and then it works flawlessly for at least a day.
I'll try setCPU to try and lower the CPU frequency from stock and prevent heat issues.
However, ideally I'd like to return the phone to the manufacturer as a defective one! Only problem - how do you convince the 'genius' tech guy that the phone overheats. Last thing I want is to send the phone in, and only get it back after a few months with some response that they found nothing wrong.
Hence, I'm still looking for some sort of app to prove in a way that the overheating is causing crashes... At least in that case they may be more likely to issue a replacement immediately. Any ideas yet?
Regards,
XA83
Just a follow up:
My phone has been sent back to HTC. After a long wait, tech support said they replaced the hardware components - I'm assuming the phone mainboard.
I've reflashed CM7 since, and it hasn't crashed a single time!
Verdict: Random freezes was caused by hardware problems on the phone, and the crashes was most likely due to overheating of the components.

Hi everyone!
I am using the AmeriCanAndroid MAGLDR NAND Rom. It works fine, until I start to play. When I start to play the temperature start to rise. I know it is a normal effect, but the increase does not stop. At 36-37 celsius the phone freeze or reboot. I saw a lot of video about the playing with the hd2 nand but my playing time is limited to 15 minutes. I have tried a few different roms as well, but the problem is the same.
Is there a solution to my problem? Is it just some software fault, I mean I forgot to install something?
Did you overclock your phone? What kernel are you running?
No, I did not. I never touched the cpu settings.
The kernel, well if I choose the about the phone option, it says that the kernel version is
[email protected]_ACA#25
and the truth is that I did absolutely nothing with the kernel.
I should install a new kernel?
Of course. U try a new kernal. If u can then update ur rom too ( clean install)
send from my hd2 @ miui 1.12.2
I think the .35 version is the newest ACA kernel.
About overheating: it's normal. Phone ram is working, so it's gonna get hotter. The question is: is it causing you any serious issues, like random reboots or freezes.
As it does, you should maybe downclock your phone - the game's gonna become more laggy, but less work on cpu.
Or don't hold it so close in your hands.
The phone really has no means of ventilation, so it can't regulate temperature well.

Thank you for the replies. Now I have some freetime so I can try a new kernel and/or a new rom.
But I am still not sure about this temperature thing. So I have one direct question: Is it possible to play with the hd2 nand without overheating,freezing,rebooting...etc?
please delete this

I have a HD2 with an older version of android cooked on. Android version 2.3.7 Kernel version 2.6.32.15_tytung_r12.4-heebf2c Mod version is CyanogenMod-7.1.0 Desire (Typhoon_v3.7.0 Magldr) I think my radio is 2.15.50.14
I really need the wifi calling feature on my phone to work. Do all the roms have this problem on our phones? Would it be easier for me to just install a new rom? Every time I turn on wifi, the phone freezes completely. I read through the post regarding this issue, but there was no specific information given about how to overclock the phone. I downloaded nofrills cpu control and have tried random combinations, but was wondering the ideal oc speed?

I never used Tytung's GB rom but wifi generally works very well. I used it all the time with Typhoon GB, Tytung's ICS and JB.
For overclocking Install Setcpu from the Play Store.

Can you give me an estimated range I should set my cpu to? I can't find the thread, but somewhere along the line I read something about how you should over clock your processor in multiples of something. I'm not describing it well, but maybe it had something to do with a mhz speed and then a frequency or another unit of measurement for power. Like volts. I have no idea, what I'm trying to say is that I read there is some sort of calculation you need to figure out in order to properly adjust your cpu settings.

I'm not describing it well, but maybe it had something to do with a mhz speed and then a frequency or another unit of measurement for power. Like volts. I have no idea, what I'm trying to say is that I read there is some sort of calculation you need to figure out in order to properly adjust your cpu settings.

I think that all better apps for this already take care of much of what you are looking for. I know SetCPU does - in fact it has profiles for numerous phones, including the HD2. The one disadvantage that I tend to forget is that it isn't free. If you look at the app's description on Google Play you will get a lot of ideas. Likewise, the developer's web site also has some good info.
Briefly, I do not set any profile's low frequency below 245 MHz (potential SODs). The high-end you can experiment - if the HD2 locks up reboot and set it lower.
I have a default profile and change it to faster MHz if plugged in (I don't care about using more power when plugged in) or lower frequencies for sleep or overheating and such. If you do get SetCPU you can plug in the attached profiles (don't forget to unzip it first!) and see if you like any of them. They can all be changed or deleted, of course.
