I'm over it I just want it done, please - HD2 General

Can anyone here please for the love of god tell me how to get my damned computer running Window's Xp 03 to detect this HD2. I picked it up for my friend and it was already running Android but all the guys info, pic's and email is still locked into the phone and no clear data doesn't work. I need to access the file that holds all of this and delete it. You can call or skype me and I'll be happy to pay someone to walk me through this. Its worth it to me not to waste anymore time or stress and get him outta my hair.
Jason

Hey there, judging by your area code you are in SC...but where in SC? I'm in Florence...if you are local, I could possibly help you out in person.

I'm in Myrtle Beach, I actually go the hd2 to connect to my macbook and I can make out the files on the sd card I simply don't know which folder contains the personal info stuff, I don't wan to delete the android stuff. Although there is one file called android.

Have you uninstalled your antivirus and, then, connected the phone for autodetect? Everytime I flash... the same problem...

I haven't but I will, right now I have the access I need oddly enough via macbook first try I just need to remember what folder I delete that removes the gmail adress and all the info. I'm copying them all over to my desktop and I guess I'll just delete them one by one.

I will gladly pay someone 50 dollars to fix this garbage for me I'm sick of this phone and ready to wipe my butt with it. Mainly because i tried deleting a file and upon restart now it won't detect there is an sd card which there is. I don't get how easy this is for you guys.

Why don't you just start from scratch... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843221

Honestly I don't have time to start from scratch and i don't understand any of this mess. I work 2 jobs and hacking or modding is not my forte. You want me to rebuild a motor and I can do it blind folded but this is your world and not mine and I'm experienced enough to know that.

You bought a phone that is modded and you call it a piece of crap. Do a hard reset and use the stock ROM if you don't want to mod it.
If you bought a computer that had the wrong OS would you call it a piece crap too? Don't blame the phone blame the mod that the person you bought it from.

NO mensa candidate with an obvious lack of reading comprehension. I'm upset with the situation of not being able to delete the guys info off the phone. Obviously I wanted it modded if I bought it modded and I've stated I wanted it modded. I'm not blaming anyone except you for adding your useless input into this thread.

Master of the Obvious
This is a problem I see often with people who want to do Technology savvy stuff without the disciplines and background in Technology whatever it is?
(At the very least make the Effort to know the Basics)
That is why Apple products exist for? I always hear Mac people insult Windows products! and its always for the same reason? "Severe Ignorance of Technology!"
That is why Grandmothers can use Macs!
"Distinctions without Differences is Master of the Obvious"
The only real advice I can give you is...
Stop Whining and "Man-Up" to the task at hand! Relax and use your brain for which it was intended for? "Reasoning" you are very fortunate to have found XDA, but "most" of the people here are for the advancement and self-Teaching of Technology! You are not going to find more Intelligent Tech Savvy people than on XDA!
Now for the Master of the Obvious things?
make sure that you have described the problem with enough detail for someone to help you! and hopefully you previously have taken the time and effort to do a "Search" on your problem! but if you are like many I see here and want everyone to hold your hand for something you are too slothy to do yourself? Then hope that someone here is Altruistic enough to help you? Remember you have spent more energy whining about the problem than....
Back up everything using either MS MyPhone or SPB Backup?
and then you can reinstall the HD2 with what you want on it?
Good Luck
Sent using my HD2

Wow hd2shadow, thank you so much for your useless input as well as the anonymous insults. Its really easy to make fun of someone or put them down when they're not in front of you. I'd probably do the same thing if I were you so no worries. I don't know you anymore than you know my but you seem like a real *****.
I am not a Mac fan boy nor am I putting anything down. I'm using a Mac because I'm in the middle of a move and do not have access to my Windows operated desktop. I build half a million dollar race cars for a living. I highly doubt I'm severely ignorant of technology as you put it.
Compute that while you rail your Steve Jobs blow up doll with a hacked HD2 balls deep in your ass, best of luck.

So are you talking about on android? If you can get it to sync to your mac just access the file on the SD card "android" then remove data.img give your phone a nice little reboot and you can set android back up per your settings with no previous data.

Found an open wireless network - how can i browse the HDD?

I have found a couple of open wireless networks. I was wondering how i can access the HDD's of PC's on the network?
i doubt anyone will reply to you mate..
Errrm, you'll need a network browser (like resco file explorer which can do it) and access to the PC's hard drive to be allowed by the computer in question.
Thankfully, access is not granted by default.
Good luck with your 1337 haX0ring.... {/sarcasm}
:x
Not a good idea to be asking this here. Unless those PC's are yours, I'd advise you to ask you question somewhere else.

Just because you can does not mean you should.
Didn't your parents teach you right from wrong? Not that I'm an angel, but there are some things you just should not do, especially when your behavior creates victims.
If you do, be sure to tell us how the smell is up there, while your sniffing your way around their backsides.....
Don't bother trying to debate this. You'd be wrong to do it and that's a fact.
dangerous_dom: getting access to a network doesn't necessarily give you access to anything else other then the network.
You might want to run a port scanner to find open ports, target vulnerable ports and reverse map open network shares.
However, any sensible PC user should shut down unnecessary open ports, disable public shares and use a good firewall. Find out how to get around these issues and you'll be getting somewhere.
An open wifi network is much like a wired LAN. Just find out how to penetrate a LAN and access shares in the normal manner and then apply your techniques over wifi.
Beware though, it's likely to be highly illegal, easily monitored, and morally reprehensible. But then, we wouldn't be hackers if we hadn't found a way to deal with these questions, eh?

Before you get all high and mighty, jump down from that horse a minute. Who said i was planning anything nasty? Far from it, actually i planned to leave a 'note' (.txt) on thier desktop telling them that there network is unsecure and that they need to protect it. There are kids around here that would do damage.
They are my neighbours, but i dont know which ones and there are too many doors to go knocking on. I would hardly **** on my neighbours.
Did your parents never teach you that people were innocent until proven guilty? (oh yeah, your american - the US threw that rule out of the window a few years back now )
But yes, it a fair point that this should not be discust on public forums. If anyone has a way i cant leave some kind of not for them, please PM me.
The Windows Messenging Service might be open - if they've got open Wifi connections, it's likely they've got open services, so you can probably just demi-spam them with a warning message.

That's really not any of your business is it? If they are smart enough to have a computer, they should be smart enough to lock it down. Bottom line is that if you hack their computer, it's unethical and perhaps illegal no matter what kind of message you leave, and you leave yourself open to suspicion as well. I'm American and I take offense to your other comment because not all of us think alike, and some if not most of us are a bit smarter and less judgmental than you'd like to acknowledge.
I really agree with the above comment. that was really offensive. people need to realize that all americans aren't alike. we're all from different parts of the world. so please don't say stuff like that because I consider it racism. and about browsing your neighbor's hdd, I think its best if you just leave it alone. it isn't any of your business. they can learn from their own mistakes.
I should advise you that there has already been a succesful court action against someone that used a neigbours wi-fi connection without authorization. It is not up to the person with the wi-fi to keep others out. It is simply illegal to connect to someone elses broadband connection. The fine was very heavy and has now set a precedent in law.

Dom, if you're going to dump on us Americans get it right. You need to capitolize the "A" and since you were trying to say "You Are" it is spelled "You're" as "Your" would refer to his ownership of what ever you would be calling "american".
Damn, takes a Yank to teach a Bloke proper English!!!
PUN AND HUMOR INTENDED
I did not mean to seriously offend anyone, sorry if i have. It was just a bit of teasing really. I was really responding to the arrogance of the poster i quoted.
I have some good American mates who live here now and i know that many Americans are not scary Bush-following freaks as the media often portrays.
Thanks for the English tips too, i just get a bit lazy of the forums. But to be honest, you yanks have murdered the English language anyway!
I wasn't judging you to be guilty of anything you did, you hadn't done anything. I was judging your own stated intent. And I stand by it. You'd be wrong to do so. Arrogance? If that's arrogant so be it though I don't see where my belief in thinking that you'd be wrong to go traipsing through your neighbor's garden for the sake of telling them their carrots are ready to be picked even approaches arrogance. Though I think your supposed good intentions smack of arrogance.
Think about how you might feel if you came home and found a note on your kitchen table telling you that you had left your back door unlocked, left there by a stranger. Would you feel violated? Creepy? Or thankful? Common sense Bloke.
I'm proud to be an American, so you'd be wasting your time to even go there. Besides it has nothing to do with what I'm trying to impart.
And I did say I was not an angel, nor do I ride horses.

Actually we do all ride horses, but some of us only do so on two occasions. One of those is when we're heading out to rescue the fair princess from the bad guy, The other is when we're riding off into the sunset, as the cowboy always seems to do.
Now picture me tipping my hat to you....and riding my horse off into the sunset. Heeeeya
Well, see what ya miss when ya dont come on this forum for a day.....
Yeah, its illegal to use a WiFI network that isnt yours, whether that be to use its associated ADSL connection or any other resource it links to (PCs and printers included).....but its also a case of one of them things that you wanna do to others, but dont wanna have done to yaself
Anyway, chances are although you may get access to their network shares, the user directory that stores the desktop directory is normally protected by a password anyway - unless they really are dumb and created usernames without passwords...and installed a broadband connection without a firewall and setup a wireless network right out of the box........in which case, you leaving them a note on their desktop will be the last of the things they will be able to see behind all the popups, viruses, etc  Maybe you should turn to offering your services to set their PC up correctly
PS: Isnt it the English that rode off to rescue fair princesses The Yanks dont have fair princesses
You are correct Dom, there are some good (great) Americans...like the ones that saved your entire continent from speaking German about 65 years ago. You're welcome.

New HTC T-Mobile Wing & User

Hello everyone,
yes i am a new user and subscriber. i purchased the wing about a month ago and so far i like it, but there are some things that i need to address. first, there is a memory problem that from what i have read, is common. i have a 2Gig microSD and most of my videos are on there. i am using TCMP to play movies. i was wondering what to use to get the best speed and usability out of my wing. what is safe to delete to make this thing race. again, i am just getting into the terminology (kitchens, cookbooks etc.), so please bear with me. a quicky, how do i get to the registry? and does the iphone theme really work good for this phone?
thanks everyone for any help

I suggest a custom rom. The T-mobile stock rom is not very good. I'm currently using Open Touch 4.0 by TTRAN and im loving it!
I'm a new Wing user also. I've had mine for a few days and i'm absolutely clueless when it comes to the rom's and making your phone look completely different. I read a little, but to someone who doesn't know all that lingo.. it's like a foreign language somewhat.. lol. Not that bad, but you know what I mean. I'm sure i'll figure it out eventually, but as of now? I'm clueless. I was told I need to HARD SPL my phone or something and I have no idea what that means or how to do it, lol. I downloaded a few things and got them to work though. But like I said, that's it.
Follow instructions. I understand people don't want to potentially "break" their phone ... but this stuff is TOO easy. Don't be scared of it.

Yeah. Well I was gonna ask you for some help (you seem to like helping people and you seem to know what you're talking about), but I can imagine how many people do that. I know how it is to be asked how to do stuff when it's very easy to begin with. I've been an admin on online games and stuff, so that part I understand. There just seems to be so many things you can do to this phone and to most people, they probably have no idea where to begin.
I was able to download a few cab's and get them to work, which was cool. I have my Wing overclocked right now at 247 I believe. Then I have a few other nice things. I use the Palringo for AIM and that's nice. I can't wait to change the overall look though. I'm not just confused on how to do it in general, but i'm also wondering whether or not you're supposed to use certain .cab's with certain rom's and all that. Ya know?

Find out which rom your interested in using and you will usually find a faq and instructions on how to flash the rom on the first post. I use Open Touch and followed the instructions to the T on my first flash and had no problems. Like Duprade said it really isnt that hard. Dont let the big bold red messages scare you. The cooks are just covering their behinds just in case you miss an instruction and brick your phone.
islinx, whats overclock? you are in the same boat as i am (glad to have you). i have also installed some roms, but i am ready for the big facelift now. i will do some searching and try to find a cool & simple look. i ran across a "show your today screen" post, but i lost it. they had some really really nice ones. i'll check back later. thanks for all the posts.

Check the thread with all the .cab files and you'll find the download to overclock your phone.

I will be home from my trip to MIAMI tomorrow ... so who ever needs help or questions answered, just catch me online and IM me and i'll give you a hand.
Doesn't matter anymore, lol. I deleted everything off the phone, put the plastic back on and i'm sending it back today. As much as I LOVED the phone, i'm not gonna keep it and feel like I got ripped off. I used a promotional code when I got the phone. That was the reason I was getting the phone at this point in time to begin with. If I wanted to pay the normal $300 for the phone + activation, I would of went to the store and got it THAT day. But I called over the phone with a promotional code to get the Wing for $100 after $50 rebate, free activation and a free bluetooth headset or car charger. The customer service rep. told me the promotional code was taken and I was all set. I'd get my phone within 4 days. I did get it 4 days later and yesterday I called them back just to make sure the promotional code took effect and I was getting some money back.
Long story short, I must of got transferred like 7 times on the phone and I was on it for about an hour. Nobody knew what to say and I had to explain my situation each time. The customer service lady basically lied to me because the promotional code all of a sudden isn't a working one. I've seen other people online use the same code and it worked for them. Recently too. Big surprise there. If I wasn't saving money for a new car in April, I would have kept the phone. But a couple hundred dollars makes a huge difference.
Thanks for your help anyway though.

Please be kind to me as this is my first post on XDA although I have been reading and utilizing these forums for quite some time. If this question has already been addressed, please let me know. I have already searched the forum and was unable to find anything on the subject but perhaps I wasn't as diligent as I could have been.
I left my G1 on the roof of my car and it fell off and was run over by a car. I already ordered a new one which will arrive in two days (I do nightly nandroid backups so all is well in that department). I would, however, like to donate the crushed G1 to one of the developers on this site so that they can salvage it for parts. Believe it or not, I was actually able to boot to the recovery screen and do a wipe (Alt-W). Obviously I could not see this as the screen is crushed but it rebooted after I hit Back+Home so I am pretty certain that there are some valuable working parts for someone who knows what they are doing.
I have taken advantage of the ROMs on this forum for awhile (Kavana's WinMo 6.1) as well as How-To posts (Apps2SD, Rooting G1, Nandroid, MAM, etc.) and countless other posts to keep my phone in perfect working order, and would like to give at least a little back to the hard working developers here. I would like a moderator to assist me in getting the phone into the hands of the right developer. I am sure it has some value to someone. I am pretty certain that the motherboard is in working condition as well as the keyboard and various other parts (it still vibrates on boot). I don't know much about hardware as I am largely a developer and a user. I don't want to take it apart only to find out that I have ruined what was once a good part. Ebay was an option but I figure that I will actually get more value out of donating it since XDA is literally my lifeline and smartphones would just plain suck without this site.
Please reference the attached photos. Sorry they are not so great. They were taken on my Dash because I was too lazy to take out my good camera.
Post replies here and we can go from there.
Thanks,
Aaron

I believe you should donate it to one of the members working on finding the jtag pins so the people who were effected by the spl brick might have a second chance
Amazon sells them as well for about $7 + $3 for shipping.. OEM, safe..never had issues..
I am keeping the battery which still works. Now I have three! The battery door is crushed too. My goal is for the phone to better not just one person in need of parts but the community in general. If a developer can use this to help out the rest of us it will have been worth it. Like I have stated, I am not sure what use it will be but I am sure that someone out there can utilize it for the benefit of the rest of us.

A battery from HTC directly (after they first tried to deny my warranty status) is 37, shipping included.
As for a crushed device, I should try to find one in that condition since emulator will not run on my laptop. More or less the process goes make a program or update, open my sd card, load it, try it, improve it on the computer, delete the sd card copy, move the new one... very agravating.
Not to mention if you plug the device into the computer right, you can load your device AS the emulator (but I don't really want to do that to my "daily driver")
I would like to suggest a moment of silence to honor your G1.

Haven't got one yet, the lead I had seems to have disappeared.
If interested in sending it for jtag study, PM me.

Even more memory!

So I was browsing the registry the other day, to see if any improvements could be enabled, no, actually I was looking for some hidden storage. Sometimes HTC phones have an additional storage, but it's hidden. But I found some additional 20mb. Don't know where it is used for.
To enable it, go to:
[HKLM]\System\StorageManager\Profiles\EXT_Pinet and set MountHidden value to 0 (zero) A soft reset may be required, in order to let it show up in your file explorer.
Anyway, I actually was searching for some 8gb om hidden internal storage to tripple confirm that the HD2 was WM7 compatible, as based on some leaked hardware req. for WM7. but... i could not found it.
WM7 does not need 8GB, it needs only 512MB. Don't believe the bull**** you read somewhere, all the bloggers have no clue.
TRUTH, Im so sick of hearin these bs specs spread around the forum
window mobile 7 only need 512mb not 8gb (even window xp on a computer does not need that mach of memory)

DONT change it.
I have to hard reset!
I can't trust xda anymore ..... you have no idea how much work is ahead of me... restoring everything back.

Its only your fault, how can u trust him when he wrote: "...Don't know where it is used for..."
Good luck with restoring your settings.
i can confirm that on mine this works. i put stuff in it, reset, and the data remains. phone seems unaffected.
Man, bigger the game bigger the risk!
On my previous two HTC devices I was keen to explore each patch/new rom/new app. Hence weekly hard resets
Now with my Leo, I'm much calmer as I don't have anymore the time you spent reinstalling everything.
Good luck exploring further
This is the last time i do these kind of changes and the last time i trust an unverified reg change.

Man, if you hang around xda-developers and apply tweaks and suff, it's kinda naive to belive you're not gonna have to hard reset from time to time.
And who is crying if you are not going to apply any tweaks anymore?

This rather reminds me of the attitude that if someone is mugged and has their phone stolen then it is entirely the fault of the victim for using the phone in a public place. (My own, contrasting, view is that it is more appropriate to assign blame to the mugger).
Perhaps it is naive to assume that people will not recommend a tweak without first verifying that it doesn't break anything serious; but, if so, that's a pretty sad reflection on the mentality of the average XDA poster, IMO. Would it not be preferable to encourage people to verify the effects of a change before recommending it - to the extent that such verification becomes expected rather than exceptional? Should we not encourage people to take some responsibility for their recommendations rather than blaming all damage that results on the victim?
Shasarak said:
Do you also regard it as "naive" to believe that one can use a mobile phone outside a train station without being mugged and having it stolen? And when such a mugging occurs, do you feel that the person to blame for what happened is the victim rather than the mugger?

This was a poor comparison. If you lay the phone at a bench, and going to the toilet, yes, it's a naive thing to do.

lol - that is a bit different isn't it! It's not as if the mugger thought they were giving good advice, but unfortunately ended up attacking someone and stealing from them. Intention makes that a very different scenario.
In this instance, there's immediately 2 people saying that the advice worked for them, so nothing could have been done either by the recommender, or the listener. If lorin.brute had left it a few posts before applying the change then he would have seen people say it worked for them and gone ahead and done it. If hyellow had asked a couple of people to test it for him then the exact same thing could have happened.
I think this is just unfortunate.
Personally, I'm on the side that if you do something then you're responsible. If your passenger told you to drive really fast and turn the steering wheel really quickly because it's funny, would you just do it, or show caution.
(There you go - I've used an excessive analogy now too )
We don't need to argue here. I blame myself. Anybody can come here and post any kind of reg change.
Its just a lesson that needs to be learned.
Although, in the spirit of XDA, i would expect some rigorous testing of the reg before posting.

True but I think that at the same time people should also use common sense and do a full system back up (with Sprite or whatever their preferred programme is) "just in case". Then it's just hard reset and 5 minutes to restore to how it was.

Really? Haven't had to hard reset my HD2 yet, in 7 months didn't have to hard reset my X1 either. If you're judicious I think you can generally avoid hard resets.

The problem with that analogy is that, if I'm driving a car, that implies that I have a fair idea of what the consequences of driving too fast will be. In this case we are talking about someone offering advice to people who are not qualified to understand the nature of the risk they are taking by following it.
A better analogy would be that it's like offering someone some cake when you know there is signfificant risk that it will contain razor blades. You yourself may deal with razor-blade-containing cake on a daily basis, and so you know to carefully sift through it with a spoon before biting; but people who are accustomed to cake that doesn't contain razor blades simply aren't aware that you need to do this. If you assume that the person you give the cake to is aware that it may contain razor blades without bothering to verify that he is, and he ends up getting lacerated, then you are far more to blame for the injury than he is. What you should do in that situation, of course, is actually check whether the cake contains razor blades or not before offering it to anybody; that way it's guaranteed that no one will get hurt, regardless of whether they are familiar with razor blade cake procedures or not. And it is not appropriate to point at the man with the lacerated mouth and accuse him of being "naive" because, when you offered him cake, he assumed that meant it was safe to eat.
I'm not getting in an analogy war with someone, especially someone on the forum that I respect, so I'll drop it. We obviously just see this from different perspectives, and I believe we should agree to disagree
Anyway, lorin.brute himself said it best...

Not quite, The OP didn't have any problem after applying the tweak, and nor did the following two people, so why would they 'know' it was dangerous? After three posts 100% of people had found no problem, so why would anyone assume it was going to go bad?

[Q] Fired employee pattern locked his phone, need the data

We fired an employee yesterday, and when he returned his phone we discovered that it is pattern-locked. I need to get around the lock to see if he has any important company data stored on his phone...
Is there any way to do this on the Shift?
Factory wipe would get rid of anything on his phone, try sliding the keyboard open to wake the phone, I know sometimes that got around the pattern lock back on my moment, never used the pattern lock on this phone, sorry.

Well first off, any important data would be stored on the SD card.
Doing a factory wipe would wipe what is on the phone, not the SD card. Nothing would really be on the phone though unless you want to dig around in his text messages.
Actually, I DO want to dig around in his text messages. I work for an IT consulting firm, and I need to know if he was communicating to clients via text.

You might have to contact Sprint for a record of those. I don't know of any way to get around the pattern lock.
If he enabled USB debugging, you will be able to get at a lot of stuff with adb... including the text message database.

Just call the guy you fired and ask him for the password. Sounds to me like the simple and adult solution. Who cares if his feeling are hurt or it will be awkward, its like turning in the office keys when you leave.

Actually, judging how many combinations you can do with the pattern lock, it would take a quite while to figure out the right combination since there's literally thousands of doable combinations that have to be done manually (afaik) not automated by a script. It isn't ironic at all. Why waste the time? I wouldn't want to bang my head against a wall when the solution is a simple phone call away. And I've been doing IT as long as you have.

I wasn't talking about the validity of the question at all. It's a great question.. since nobody seems to know the answer I would just suggest taking out the battery and seeing if you can boot into recovery and mounting it via USB if USB debugging is enabled and/or messing with ADB on the phone..
Also, why is this company giving their employees Android phones and not Blackberries? Blackberries can be controlled via BES. Maybe it's just a husband trying to hack his wife's phone?

My last job was using Droid Incredibles. Android phones can be controlled via Exchange ActiveSync security policies. I personally did it at my last job to **** with this guy that was an annoying asshole. Made it so he had to enter his AD password whenever he wanted to unlock his phone and I'd data wipe his phone weekly. He'd ask me about it and I'd tell him it's security policy. I had him convinced that everyone was having the same thing done when they weren't.
Honestly: If I knew the answer I wouldn't tell you. Bypassing someone's security is not the kind of information you should be able to get from XDA.

You don't think the whole story is fishy? The way I see it, he has two obvious options:
1. Call the employee. Ask for the pattern.
2. If he refuses, call the cops.
The fact that he is not doing either of these indicates that he does not have a legitimate reason for wanting the info.
