[Q] DesireHD web browsing experience? - Desire HD General

Im planning to buy a DHD, and the web browsing experience is one of the the most important factor for me. How good is it? im a fairly tech savy guy so im willing to root/install custom roms/OC/remove bloatware whatever to improve the performance of my phone.
Im looking for speed and usuability( i heard android is really laggy when pinching to zoom, scrolling etc ).
Please make comparisons to other flagship android devices, iphone 4 and wp7.

android offers the same high quality web expirence as every other device if anything its better because you also get embedded flash elements that work HOWEVER!
if you are on a page with lots of flash advertisments and other flash content it can lag but this is fixed by changing the settings so that it only loads these elements on demand or not at all
so to close it is as fluid as all other platforms it is not laggy, slow ect unless you have flash enabled, and are on a page full of ads (i dont think flash is properly hardware accelerated yet)
now lastly the DHD however is surprisinly fast with full flash enabled ive only had slowdown when running a 720p video off of the desktop youtube page

Agree with noobdeagle.
I can only compare to my last device, a HTC HD2 - the Opera browser and default browsers yield a much smoother browsing experience (however I could not get Opera to force desktop versions of web pages).
At the moment DolphinHD is my browser of preference on my DesireHD.
So far I haven't noticed any lag on any of the browsers or any of the websites I frequent. Realistically, I know not to expect a 100% equivalent desktop browser experience but it's been great so far.

On my old Touch HD I used Opera as my main browser and I was thinking about getting it on my new DHD.
However, since I started using this default browser on DHD I don't think I'm goning to change it to anything else. This browser gives you a lot of flexibility in zooming pages + it always reformats all text so it fits in the screen and Opera can't do that as good.
Same time it works fast and smoothly so I'm very happy with browsing experience.

Best I've known on mobile device, without getting to silly extremes like the dell streak, the galaxy tab or the iPad. Personally I prefer it to all of those. If web browsing is one of the main things you will do with the dhd I don't think it will let you down.

read any desire HD review and the browsing will be praised and then more for what the big screen offers in readability
the Desire HD also features improved font definition
for flash i use the default browser on demand, flash especially flash video is much faster than old old desire/nexus one
for normal non flash sites i use opera mobile beta, that thing is butter smooth
pretty much browsing speed + bigger screen is the highlight of this phone

HTC HD (WM) Overwelming

Hey everyone,
Let me start off by saying that this is not a promo or hate post for the iPhone.
I was always a WM user, had a Trinity for a few years and loved it. I went to the iPhone and I must admit it is much better than the WM in many ways. Months later I heard about the HD, I have it now but after using the iPhone I feel such a diconnect with WM. I used the HD with a few various ROMs but went back to the iPhone due to the superior integartion of software and hardware, everything just seems to work so much better. Now my HD is just collecting dust. I know that the HD is a much superior device in hardware (except for the touch screen-I am not talking about resolution). There are a bunch of little things that annoy me about the HD and I know it is just software realated. For instance, I can't even go on the Facebook site with Opera Mobile, looking at pictures just does not work properly. Youtube video are not as smooth or high quality partly due to lack of 3G, I am in Canada. I know this can't be changed but still a bit of a bother. The camera is 5mp but I can't even take pictures of my 1 year old son without blurring due to the shutter speed. I read many threads and hacks but it is just overwelming. Can you guys make a few suggestions as I really like the HD and want to use it instead of the iPhone. How can I get faster browsing on EDGE? I don't care about streaming Youtube but is there at least an option to download Youtube videos in HiDef to watch at a later time? I don't want to ramble on and I hope you understand what I am asking, any help is appreciated.
Yes, I do like and I don't mind tweaking my phone.
If you really like the IPhone's simplicity check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473116&highlight=finger+friendly
to download youtube vids look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427702
for facebook just set your browser to iphone.facebook.com (isntead of m.facebook.com).
Other browsers are faster than Opera but I have a 3G Touch Pro and an Edge Touch HD and the speed difference actually isn't that much - just a few seconds no a full page. You can try to use Iris Browser (it is based on webkit so it looks iPhony) or NetFront or SkyFire (fastest but not high resolution yet).
Also have a look at Opera Mini not Mobile that comes installed on our THD. This browser is fast.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=469469&highlight=opera
I recommend Opera Mini v4.2.13216 if you don't want to do any tweaking.
Concerning the camera: I recently compared it to the iPhone camera under daylight conditions and the HD camera really is about 10 times better. The pictures are very sharp, there's no grain and you can zoom in 4 times and still see details.
The iPhone pictures were blurres, zooming in was useless and they were grainy even in brigt daylight.
I suggest you disable the shutter sound and set the picture quality to 'super-fine'. I took photos with the HD while skiing, which makes it impossible to hold the phone still and the pictures were perfect nevertheless.
Concerning Facebook, try using another browser like Iris, Internet Explorer or Skyfire (which is not yet released but will definitely be able to display any website, including video).
Next, I have to say that my HD recently annoyed me a lot and I already thought of getting an iPhone (again).
I tried to replace all the Windows Mobile applications with finger-friendly alternatives and was quite successful (see the video bugsykoosh posted earlier).
However, Winterface caused crashes and could not make me happy at all (in fact, I was even more annoyed by the crashes and the lack of beutiful animations like the ones on the iPhone).
Then I made a WAD2 skin using bluemetalaxe's realize iconset and the iPhone-like launch animations. Now, everything runs smooth again. No crashes anymore, an interface that's completely customizable and beautiful and launching applications is fun
I then installed FingerMenu and replaced all the horrible green with a nice blue and now I love my HD again!
OK, that's my story... please excuse my any bad grammar in my story as I'm not English
i looked up bluemetalaxe threads and i ended up with huge sets of icons and i have no idea how to assigne them or how they would look like on my hd :S can you please post screens for your hd and how it looks like now and direct us to the thread with the instructions to follow ? please.. this sounds so interesting to my and i am actually bored with the touchflow style and capabilities :\
There is nothing wrong with wanting the iPhone if you don't need to switch in spare battery during the day, do not require GPS, and do not keep important excel, power point, and word document on your device.
iPhone is an extremely attractive product. The user interface, smoothness of operation is way ahead of winmo devices'.
However, if your need could only be met by HD, like in my case, you would have to sadly give up the extremly sexy user experience.
To mimic that interface, if you really really like iPhone's UI, I recommend using Vito's Winterface. It is as close as you could get to program launching and navigation. Without complication.
Then, start replacing and looking for finger friendly software to replace the older ones that you had collected. For example, replace the standard contact application with Inesoft Phone 4, may be also use its fovourites (althernatively you can use Winterface's). Use Vito's SMS Chat to replace the SMS. Opera browser is good, but check out Opera mini (It's fast, and scrolling is just as good as Safari's). Use ThumbCal for Calendar for example. Use Google Map with Street View to beat iPhone's standard google map. Use Vito Audio NOtes Touch for voice and call recording. Have you tried Web Video Downloader? It lets you watch not just youtube but every other type of flash websites too, with better video quality downloaded or watched instantly. Try out Panaromic Calc Pro for calculator
GPS applications is the area that winmo devices really shines over iPhone. I have TomTOm7, Garman, Mapking, and iGO8 on my devices. In Australia, I use only TomTom but I use others while travelling overseas.
DOn't forget SoftMaker for desktop class functionality in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation. Or use it just to open attachments without losing any formatting.
The day before yesterday, I was using TF3D, customized with wallpaper on every tab and applications changed with SSMaPa. Today, mine desktop is based on Winterface. Tommorrow? May be SPB Mobile Shell again. This is so much fun playing with all types of software. It makes my toy brand new again each day. Yes, it can be a little laggy at times with tons of software installed. It may also freeze my device once in a while. But, I get to play, and the device serves my need.
Its not just the iphones UI which is better, its the quality of its apps. Developers make more efort with the iphone. Just compare shazam on WM to shazam on iphone, and also lastfm, facebook etc.
Commercial developement for WM has stopepd, everyone develops for iphone now.

Not to mention a iPhone app is 2-3 USD/EUR, while WM apps are like 20 USD.
SO WTF !!!?!? why should we pay more, how more supperior is WM apps against iphone. with NOTHING, in fact, i have 4-5 apps for HD that actually use the HD capabilities (screen res and accelerometer) while, ALL applications on iPhone look better, work better and are cheaper.
There is a commercial product i looked at last days (can't remember, something like a chat program), WM version was 19,99 USD, while iPhone was 3.9 USD .. so again WTF ?!
THAT is why iPhone gains so much momentum. (and because of the capacitive screen )

iPhone speed...is it possible on the Touch HD?

Guys,
Never ever wanted to even bother about iPhone due to the fact that WinMo devices have almost endless custom apps available and tweaks etc.
That said...I played/fiddled with a mates iPod touch today and the speed at which animation took place and the scrolling of files was immensely smooth.
Anyone recommend any tweaks to help make the Touch HD run this smooth?

Buy an iphone 3GS!
Come on...seriously. Can the HD not perform to that level then?
You could try flashing a new ROM??
There's a huge difference between "smoothness" and "speed"!
While the iPhone's UI is VERY smooth, it's actually slower than the Touch HD (for the iPhone 3G, the 3GS is now a bit faster due to the Cortex A8 processor architecture).
The level of smoothness depends on the software. While Windows Mobile was designed for slow hardware and therefore is pretty fast on newer devices, it was not designed for finger use and therefore doesn't feature that smooth kinetic scrolling and nice animations.
Sorry, but you can't have an interface that's as "nice looking" as the iPhone's for now, though I think TouchFlo is already pretty good and leaves little to be desired.
Also, try out Miri's or Dutty's WM6.5 ROM and you'll at least get that smooth kinetic scrolling and bigger, nicer looking list items.
The iPhone's interface may look nice and smooth, but it's actually less practical for "professional" use because you don't have multitasking, you only get a bunch of icons, you've got to go back to the homescreen every time you want to switch between applications and there's no good solution for notifications (like the top bar on WM).
I agree - I'm not disputing that Touch HD is a better unit for professionals...and indeed myself...I'm just trying to get the smoothness to rival it.
Have you tried WM6.5? Microsoft has added kinetic scrolling to it.
No, I'm trying to stay with stock ROM
Then you must replace the default WM applications with "smoother" ones. I've made a package with finger friendly applications a while ago:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473116&highlight=finger+friendly
You can use applications like ThumbCal, Kinoma Play, iContact etc. and make them the default ones via the registry.
The package is a bit outdated and I don't use it anymore because with WM6.5 and the newest TouchFlo it's not necessary.
Wiggz,
I spend the last hour doing my homework and I've found some useful tweaks that speeds up the interface a little bit.
First and foremost, read through this thread.
Having said that, I suggest you use some form of registry explorer and look for the following things.
FontCache / Glyphcache - Located at
HKLM\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\
The limit should be 8192, if not, record that number and keep it somewhere so that if it doesn't turn out to be stable for you, you can revert it. Change this limit to 65536.
File System Cache - Located at
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize
The limit should be 0 by default. Change this value to 8192. Also, in the same section, you'll see something called EnableCache. The value of that should be 1, if it's 0, change it to 1 to enable file system cache.
File System Filter Cache - Located at
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize
The limit should be 0 by default as well. Change this value to 131072.
After doing these settings, do a soft reset and see what happens? Noticeable differences should be seen in Opera. If you find that you get instability as a result of these cache differences, simply reduce the numbers by dividing them by 2 (e.g., 65536 > 32768).
I hope this helps you get that iPhone fluidity that you're looking for.
Cheers.

if you like iphone interface ... buy an iphone for dummies ....
HD is better faster and superior ....
if you want more speed and iphone interface install Vito winterface or better mobile shell 3 the iphone UI killer
You can also buy a Samsung Omnia 2: http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=5734
Looks pretty smooth, hm?

The iPhone is indeed smoother and more fluid. There is no tweak, custom Rom or other today plugin that can give you the same experience and still deliver the ease, clean looks and functionality in one package. Believe me, I've tried them all and thus got an iPhone
In theory the HD might be faster, but in practice it isn't. WinMo is fundamentaly flawed in many ways. Graphicly 6.5 is a joke, that's why every manufacturer (samsung, HTC...) are trying so hard to cover it up. And let's not forget iPhone's 3D capabilities!
The HD had potential, but HTC and microsoft failed (again) IMO.
The amount of apps shouldn't be the reason to buy the HD. Many apps don't support WVGA and the iPhone's appstore has thousands of programs and is growing fast. Some free, some not. It's nice to see a lot of iPhone apps are far more 'creative' and utilize multitouch.
While the iPhone interface seems smoother at first glance, it is actually slower because there's no multitasking and you have to close the application you're in and go back to the home screen in order to launch another application. This slows down the workflow dramatically.
When I got the iPhone 3G, at first I also was stunned by how smooth the UI was, but after some weeks of using it, I realized that the UI was actually pretty ineffective because you can only have that bunch of icons, no information on the homescreen, no multitasking and there's no good solution for notifications.
While the WM interface looks a bit "old", it's actually more effective/productive in my opinion.
You should really try out Miri's or Dutty's latest WM6.5 ROMs, the new Manila is a lot better and the kinetic scrolling makes for a huge difference imo.
I agree that with the shipped ROM or with a badly configured ROM the Touch HD seems a little "stucky" and not that smooth or fast as an iPhone (and especially the 3GS). But have you tried some good cooked ROMs? Especially the new WM 6.5 releases are VERY fast and smooth.
Almost all my collegues own an iPhone (3G). In the beginning they laughed at me (they're all Apple addicts, I am the only PC user). But with every new ROM I flashed I astonished them more and more. Now two of them even sold their iPhones
maati,
You kept saying that iPhone 3G is slower and 3GS is only slightly faster. I find this not to be the case at all. My cousins has both 3G and 3GS and we sat down few days ago and did a side by side comparison surfing some websites. We're on the same network. Both 3G and 3GS beats my HD by miles in speed. 3G still beats mine but by not much but for 3GS the difference is very noticeable.
I'm still using stock ROM, but I'm not sure if ROM makes any difference to Opera mobile's speed.
The thing is, iPhone is fast out of the box, no tweaking is needed. Whereas I'm struggling still with the randomly non-reponding screen. I still find myself having to press very hard to activate actions on my HD. Sometimes nothing happens after 5 or 6 presses, then suddenly a rapid strings of reactions comes, and it overshot what I actually wanted to do. I had the same problem with my HTC advantage with its cook ROMs. Everytime I flash a new ROM, the desktop UI is fast (though it seldom have any influence on the underlying applications) for a while but it usually quickly deteriorate once more tweaking and softwares are loaded.
Not only that, when she showed me her applications and walk though with me some of the 65,000 applications in the apple store, I was just dumbfounded. I had always ridiculed her for not using what I had always believe to be the most superior phone, which to me was window mobile phones.
So to tell the truth, I'm lately extremely tempted to jump ship myself.
I was not talking about surfing the internet. This depends on where you are and which network you are on (e.g. where I live, the Touch HD is faster than the 3G, especially on fast HSDPA networks).
I was talking about stuff like opening applications, everyday tasks. The HD does them faster than the 3G, especially when you leave the applications running in the background. And even with lots of applications running in the background, the HD's battery life is significantly better.
Maybe it's because I know how to use it (e.g. don't press more than once on a button just because it doesn't react immediately) but I've got no problem with the responsiveness of the HD. I even think it's a bit better than on the iPhone where some applications are also pretty slugish (though the resistive screen needs more force). And my iPhone crashed at least as often as my Touch HD (I think about once in 2-3 weeks with no soft reset).
(btw. I'm talking only about the iPhone 3G which I used together with the Touch HD for some weeks. I only tried the 3GS once.)
IMO...
speed = yes
smoothness and fluidy = no
(there is a difference but WinMo is just not designed to be smooth overall like the iPhone)

hi Wiggz,
if u want a UI which has speed on WM6.1 then i recommend Point UI. it is finger friendly and the kinetic scrolling speed is great. with customizing it; there are a large no. of applets which r all free from the community page on their website
try it out...ive been using it for a while now and ill never go back to touch flo 3D. If u buy PointUI pro or find a cracked one somewhere then this increases the detachment from WM UI as u have a full contact card and no longer need 2 use Wm's ugly one. if u choose to download either version a great Applet mod is the Messaging Mod which lets u read ur SMS with out going to the WM app.

What browser do you use?

I'm a current tmo touch pro2 user, and am thinking about upgrading to HD2. However I'm not so convinced about this after watching the HD2 browser vs Iphone browser:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmDmH8lEQJE
It looks like for a phone with this advanced hardware specs and still doesn't perform as well in internet browsing then it's not worth the money for upgrade. Right now I rely heavily on opera mini 5 on touch pro2 but I want to know the opinions from the current HD2 owners.
What browser do you use? And why do you prefer this one?
I am a former iPhone owner and I have an HD2 now. I love it and I would never go back. Mobile Safari is better than Opera 9.7, but the better screen resolution and screen size make the whole internet browsing experience much better on the HD2.
Opera Mobile 10 all the way. Runs fast, looks good. No pinch to zoom; sure, but I never used 9.7 so don't miss it.
Seems like Opera Mobile 10 runs better on HD2 due to the better hardware. I've heard so many complaining about Opera Mobile 10 runs slow and eats too much memory on Touch Pro2 so that's why I stick to Opera Mini 5.
I don't want to stick to Opera Mini 5 as it's kinda made for "dummy phones" and doesn't really show the real potential of the WM device.
By the way, how many of you find the lack of hardware keyboard a problem?
I just installed Opera 10 on my HD2 and I have to say that I was very disappointed. Websites do not render well, much worse than on Opera 9.7. Am I missing something here? I have Opera Turbo disabled, Zoom is by 100% and Mobile version is off..
Try going to www.engadget.com or even www.ppcgeeks.com
Compare Opera 9.7 to Opera 10...big difference and much better on Opera 9.7
Been using Opera 10 last few days, runs like a dream & has built in flash support. Best WM browser I've used so far.
I tried skyfire, but when I learnt that the page is actually rendered on their server, and not on my device, and when they failed to answer a simple question about my credentials when I sign into a secured site,
I stopped using it.
(failed to answer meaning - no one from skyfire team even bothered to reply the question)
So the bottom line -
I would not recommend using this software, as it might actually be spyware.

Apart from flash, can you please enlighten me, what is so much better than Opera 9.7? I tested many websites I regularly visit and all of them rendered much worse than on Opera 9.7
2 reasons im not using opera 10:
My keyboard doesn't work with it (weird...)
and no pinch to zoom... Kills me!

I find it looks better, layed out better, easier to use with my fat fingers and I think it seems slightly quicker to load pages too.
My main reason for using it is that it is allot easier to use for me with a non stylus device.
Has no pinch to zoom, but if you tap the screen it zooms anyway. And I could never get 9.7 to zoom how I wanted anyway, it always seemed to zoom back out slightly again anyway.

Yes but what about the layout of web sites? Opera 10 doesn't seem to render pages correctly..There are so many issues with it, I really hate it.
I don't know, I can't say I've noticed it not rendering pages properly here.
Not on the pages I've visited anyway.

too lazy to upgrade to 9.7 or even 10
works really fine.
ie is some crap no pinch-to-zoom..thats a no-go

Netfront Browser 4.00 concept version R002
I'm a former iPhone user too, and the browsing experience on the HD2 is far better than the iPhone. The screen is bigger and allows you to view more of the page at once, and the processor allows it to browse much more briskly. ie: The HD2 browses faster over 3G, than my iPhone does over WIFI. On the iPhone, I usually have to view mobile versions of pages. The HD2 is big and fast enough, to load full-pages, with full flash support (with Skyfire).
I primarily use Opera 10 as my main browser. Its super fast, has a nice interface, and renders pages really well. The only downside is that it lacks pinch to zoom, but I honestly don't ever need it. I hardly ever used pinch to zoom on my iPhone. Double tap to zoom is easier to use, and can be done with one hand.
If you can't live without Pinch to zoom, you can always use the Opera 9 browser that comes stock with the HD2. It isn't quite as fast as Opera 10...its probably just a little bit faster than the iPhone's Safari browser.
When I find myself wanting to view pages with flash, I use Skyfire, which have full flash support. Lack of flash support is the iPhone's biggest draw-back IMO, and Apple doesn't seem interested in ever bringing it to the iPhone....even the iPad (which is an oversized iPhone anyway) doesn't support it. You can also tweak Opera 9 with flash lite, which gives it limited flash support.
The HD2 wins in the browsing department IMO, if only because you have choices.

I agree with HTC_Junglist - Opera 10 renders web pages fine for me. I can only guess that you're talking about the fact that it does not use text reflow, and has blocks of text set to fit the zoomed in display, rather than the full screen one. That's so that you can zoom in on a part of the page and actually get that part of the page, unlike previous version of Opera (that had text reflow). Also, the zoomed out view is for moving the page round, not for reading it. That's why it's only 1 touch to zoom in to read, and 1 touch to zoom out again. It's by design and if you get into it it's way better than any previous versions. I hated it at first, but after a few days I grew to love it and could now not revert back to the sluggish and fiddly 9.7.

Acer A500 disapointment ...

Hello, I just bought an Acer A500, this is my first Android device (I own an iphone 3gs).
But I am very dispointed by its speed. I was hoping it would be as fast and smooth (at least !) as my old iphone 3gs but it's not ... When you scroll a web page it's not smooth, whatever the web browser I tried, even single web page as Google !
The only smooth scrolls are when you use the photo browser or when you scroll through the icons pages. For the rest, even the Android Market app, it's not smooth at all.
So is there any optimisation we can do to let the A500 display everything smoother, or is it just an Android 3.0 problem which may be corrected in a future release ?
Thanks
The coming Android OS 3.1 will be better. The update including the browser stability and smoothness.
.

Thanks, I just hope now the 3.1 will come quickly to the A500 and that it will really be smoother ...
My experience with the A500 is very fluid. I find that browsing to be "fast & smooth" as well. So, I'm left scratching my head that your receiving a better browsing experience on a 3GS. Could you upload a video sample on youtube? Some people have reported wifi issues with their device and that could be the culprit to your browsing experience. See if coming in close proximity of your wifi AP improves your browsing experience. If so then search this forum for what others have done to resolve the wifi issue. I am not having an issue so I have not further investigated the wifi issue.

The browsing experience is a pain in the ass... but that is not from ACER it's from honeycomb...
the stock browser is still unstable and buggy and not support HTML5 and CSS3 as promissed...
and some function supported already by Iphone (field url and email for input do not trigger the good keyboard)
no smooth animation on javascript it s choppy and lost a lot a frame...

When I say a pain in the ass I mean, only if we want make or build animated javascript website

this should be SMOOTH...or maybe I expect too much from "high-end" tablet dual-core.

I do not mean anything wrong, I said before that Android 3.0 is young and will grow up by time with better and better things to come I love android and I love Acer Tablet, really good products
-- 3.1 --
it's come in this month "confirmed by Acer Thailand" but no final date yet...
So far my disapointment are not same
I just see the UI improvement on Samsung Galaxy 8.6... it's so nice the UI is sweeeeet
the status bar, with the turn on/off many things...
the fast app launcher on the bottom... WoOow sweet...
I hope we will got some flavor of it
IMPORTANT:
I own 2 tablets Acer A500
I own 2 Liquid Metal S120
You should probably return it. Nobody has yet had these issues, so it might be something wrong with your tablet.
@bec07 : who ?
You and the OP.
It is important to note that not all websites are created equal. I have fast and smooth experiences with some sites and horrible one with others. There are too many variables from code quality, embedded media and offsite advertising, amount of content on a given page etc to truly quantify a 'good' or 'bad' browsing experience.
Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. Some of it has to do with the browser, some has to do with the page you're loading.

Agree, google.com is fast for me, but this site xda is very slow.
I use Dolphin HD browser... faster and more features.
Basicly all tablets are identical at this point. Some thinner, some thicker but only one manufacturer was smart enough to add the full size USB port.
Since the hardware is identical and it really packs quite a punch those issues should not happen. It would be best they check with their retailer or inconspicuously go to try out another A500.

I have 2 tablet and both are identical so I should change all tablet... naaaa don't think so.
I do think the 3.1 will remove some flickering glitch, and smooth maybe the javascript animation and css animation stuff. but for sure some website are poorly coded or got a DOM overloaded that eat the memory.
I do compare Sencha Touch website between iPad 1 and Acer A500... sad that run smoother on the old old iPad rather than on the new A500
but read really, I said the honeycomb and android is still young and buggy and will be better day after day because of the active community and the open mind of the code. do not interpret or miss understand.
It's a fact that browsing is not that smooth that should be, but it's already good.
now have to become the BEST.
(someone told me on the galaxy S II the browser was.... too fast for rendering it's tooooo good, but I didn't check about flickering or else)
I would have to agree with the first post, the web browsing experience is not as nice as iOS in regards to smoothness/scrolling, comapred to my iphone4 and former ipad1, but its not that bad either.
looking forward to 3.1.
sencha was developed with iPhone in mind, that's not really a valid comparison.

Just change the theme to xda classic and here you go
Today I checked xoom 3.1 videos on youtube, and I'm still disapointed ...
Browsing the web is faster but still not as smooth as it should be.
And not only the web, also the other apps were not 100% fluid.
I don't know if I will wait until the 3.1 comes to the A500 ... I may sell it quick (only owned for 2 days !) and buy an iPad. And believe it or not : yesterday I have been to the hospital because of an epilleptic crisis I did while using the A500, because of the non-smooth scrollings ...
My point of view is that a pad experience seems magic when it's 100% fluid, without this the pad experience seems not far from a laptop experience, which is not what I was searching for.
New android users always feel that. U can easily change ur the launchers such as Launcher Pro which is very smooth and fast in my opinion. There are tweaks around for you to look for and learn while experiencing Android =)

Thanks

Ipads have had probably What? 50 updates. A500 had one so far. I have the A500 and my wife's has the Ipad. I think I updated my wife Ipad 3 times since Christmas ( hour or longer updates ) Give it some more updates and the A500 will shine. The way both Tablets are now if I had to sell one of them it would be the Ipad. The only thing I like better about my wife's Ipad is, I can plug it directly into our digital camera and get pictures real fast, but you also have to buy the 30.00 adapter to do this and now you have something more to lose and carry around. JM2C
This is the difference with Apple : with Apple it works fine out of the box, of course a few bugs are corrected in firmware updates but these bug do not avoid you to use your pad.
With Android I feel like in the bad days of Windows mobile : you have to wait for the manufacturer promeses before being able to use your pad properly, but most of the time windows mobile devices never worked as expected ... That's the problem of having one operating system for hundred of devices with different hardwares.
I would be very happy to keep my A500 mainly because of the included usb port, but also because of the price and the fact that Android is more "open", if only Acer would have given us a 3.1 release date I would feel better.
Edit : this time it's sure, I will sell it !!! A current bug let me type very slow on the keyboard, this is the last bug I will accept ! Another big problem has been found : the button bar on the bottom of the screen : I often touch it while using the A500 which freezes the screen ....
I guess I will wait for 3 or 4 more years before going back to Android ! For now I'll stay with Apple.
Thanks anyway to all of you !

Browser stutter

Perfectly smooth scrolling web pages are something that I've become accustomed to with the Ipad's I've had while waiting for a decent Android tablet. I thought the Nexus 10 would finally offer the smoothness of the Ipad with 4.2 and the awesome Exynos processor. Sadly, I can't find a browser that is nearly as smooth as Safari on the Ipad. I tried every browser I could find in the Market and even rooted and installed the AOSP browser. The AOSP browser is the best, but on image heavy sites, it still stutters.
Am I the only one that is bothered by this?
Why can the Nexus 10 run graphic heavy games at 30-40 fps but can't render a damn webpage with static graphics smoothly?
Also, I've found quite a few apps don't have smooth scrolling, but I suspect poor coding is causing the issue on them, even though knowing the cause doesn't help that that they are still inferior to their Ipad counterparts.
I don't want to go back to an Ipad! Will custom ROMs, kernels and OCing smooth it out?
The reason certain browsers including Chrome "stutter" is because of how it's coded. I've been using boat browser and I have no stutter issues or smoothness problems. Which other browsers have you tried other than aosp browser?

I don't think browsers are optimized for the Nexus 10 or Android 4.2 just yet, hell, I don't think 4.2 or the Nexus 10 drivers are fully optimized at this time, but what I'm seeing of Dolphin and Boat Browser in the following video is pretty darn good, skip to 10 and 20 minutes.
Performance issues on this tablet are very likely software optimization issues and will be fixed eventually. Don't believe all the bad press that makes up stuff as they go along by saying the Exynos chip can't handle the resolution. That's garbage, and shows a pretty big misunderstanding of the processor/GPU. What amazes me is that even major tech sites with people who should know what they are talking about are saying it, and it drives me nuts.
The tablet has been out for less than a week. Developers need time to catch up, including Google with Chrome. If you look at the history of Nexus devices, they have always shipped with software issues, including very blatant issues that should have been fixed before release. The beauty of owning a Nexus however is that bug fixes come right from Google...no waiting on an OEM to deliver them.
A lot of the same issues were leveled against the Nexus 7, and after a couple of OTAs things have been greatly improved, and now everyone loves that tablet. Give it time. Things will get better.

Google is partially to blame, they handed out a pre-release stuttery models to reviewers after all. Things are better since the 13th update, but Chome is still doing the Nexus 10 a great disservice. Let's see how sites such as GSM and PhoneArena who patiently waited for the final model judge it, I think it's safe to say first impressions mean a lot, and they are testing units with fresh SW, multi-user accounts and performance improvements out of the box. Of course, as you said, there's plenty of performance still to come, and I can't wait to get mine!

Thanks for the rationale responses so far. Google is really shooting themselves in the foot with the lack of polish on Chrome, Android, etc. They are doing well overall, but just think of how good they could be doing with a few improvments to user experience here and there! Hire the programmers to make it happen Google!
I tried the Boat Browser and it was decent but not buttery smooth like Safari on the Ipad. I'll reinstall it and post a youtube video of the stutter tonight when I get home.
Boat Browser is the best. Safari might be a bit smoother but that is because you can't scroll as fast as Boat and Dolphin. Scroll it at the same speed for both if your hands is steady enough to slow scroll boat and you will see it is the same ****.
Don't let the i-tricks fool you by hiding stutter with animation and masking page load speeds with both a load bar and a background image loading spin wheel.
Also, after using some of the features on Boat, such as the screen shot and auto scroll top of the page or bottom of the page touch icon, you will never use another browser.
Have you tried Dolphin with Dolphin Jetpack addon? Just make sure you turn on jetpack in Dolphin setting. It's off by default.

Chrome sucks. End of story. But it's not like the iPad is perfect either. I just browsed on my sisters iPad 4. It was quite a nice experience, I can't deny that, but there was some tiny lag on sites like Engadget and Android police

I don't think you'll see Android be as smooth as iOS anytime soon. They are fundamentally different architectures and I think Google will likely stick with what they have in Android and wait for the hardware to catch up. Hardware was finally catching up starting with this generation but the large jump in resolution presents a *slight* setback in performance.
9 times out of 10 Jellybean is smooth enough for me. It is much better than it was in the past.
As for Chrome:
Like I've stated before, most of the development effort going into Chrome for Android for the last 6 months has been to upstream and open the source code rather than on performance and bugs. This is why Android is still on Chrome 18 while other platforms are on 24. There are several bug fixes that we'll get once they release Chrome 24 or 25 for Android, including a bug that makes Chrome laggy to scroll busy webpages.
Once Chrome is fully upstreamed, which looks like it might be for Chrome 25, it will then also be fully open source. This means we have make our own builds and do it as frequently as we want. Additionally, it is likely that we will see a much faster pace of development for Chrome as well.

As others have said, software optimization is key. The biggest issue is that they are dealing with a new SoC, so there is more involved than just CPU and GPU coding. Almost all Android hardware has been Tegra so far, so that code is certainly mature at this point. Comparisons at this stage can be unreasonable in some cases. While the Exynos 4 series has been in use in the Note 10.1, but the 5250 has a new core -- the A15, which no one has experience with AFAIK -- new GPU, new memory architecture... Also, it's possible that Samsung wrote the drivers for the Note 10.1 while Google is taking responsibility for the N10.
So, my point is twofold:
Firmware development for this platform is at an early stage of maturity.
Optimization will be complex and won't be as easy as writing a few simple patches.
I think it will take some time for this new platform to reach its potential. The early adopters, as always, will have to be patient. I hope that gives you some reassurance that your N10 will still meet or exceed your expectations... in time.

I have been an Android user for two years and in my honest opinion this is as good as it gets with it. There is something historically wrong with the core of Android where a game like Modern Combat 3 can look as smooth as silk, but browsing just feels like its being pushed to its limit.
A friend of mine this week bought himself a 32GB Nexus 7. I rushed round to have a play and was disappointed when trying out Chrome and Opera Mobile with these XDA forums. The Nexus 7 sported a quad-core processor and still browsing at times felt awkward and reluctant. It looked like the framerate wasn't right or the resolution was too much to handle. And that's with the latest update to Jelly Bean.
I did raise a similar issue with my Galaxy Tab 2 7" here and before anyone beheads me I had already flashed it with CM9 final. As I stated NOVA 3 was slick as oil, but browsing with Stock Browser, Opera Mobile and Chrome was making my eyes jump like mad. It looked like Chrome was trying to get around it by only rendering half the screen and then a split second later displaying the rest.
My niece's iPad 2 really impressed me when browsing on the XDA forums. The same pages I browsed on the Nexus 7 were scrolling as good as on a PC. Any comment that Android browsers scroll faster and therefore make the iPad look smoother is full of it. It was fast and it was smooth.
This will be last journey with Android. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna turn into an Apple user and get mugged off by paying ridiculous prices for a piece of their overinflated kit. My current smartphone and tablet will be with me for the next few years to come as the wow factor with all these mobile devices is disappearing, I'm afraid.
Easiest fix is ocean browser. Till they work out the kinks of chrome mobile/tablet version.
Also anyone saying safari on the ipads don't stutter are wrong they certainly do, perhaps not as often as chrome but it does happen. We use the gen 3's at work.
However to say there wasn't any conceivable improvement from Donut to JB I do find strange as I certainly did.

totally agree. for something that has great specs, its dissapointing to see it stutter when loading webpages. my ipad had lower specs compared to this and it was smoother by a mile than the nexus. i think thats the trade off for buying sometor buying something about to Mike about you can talk to my phone but they hired mejust too ****ing hi Billy.
okay the last part was typed using the voice and it sucks too.lol
Chrome currently really has its problems, but keep in mind that as dalingrin said, the mobile chrome version is 18 while the desktop version sits at 23. So there has been a lot of effort put into porting everything from desktop to android rather than bugfixing and polishing. The android version will catch up early next year: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/1...s-including-android-starting-early-next-year/
In the meantime I recommend using the android stock browser. Its extremly fast and fluid and even supports flash.
