I have been reading and attempting two flash anything for 2 days. I am new as I have stated in some threads and need baby steps unfortunately like im
sure some others do. I have been able to unlock, root, and get into recovery but after that no dice. I get everything Im suppose to do but... I am not able
to flash anything and I have looked for help in threads and have had some help and success but more importantly all detail is not clear to me all the time. I
am on here because I want the most out of my phone and all the goodies and appreciate the work of everyone. Coming from Windows to Android is
different and I understand will take sometime to gain the knowledge needed but it seems as you/we are supposed to know everything already or if you/we
dont understand what to do then you/we shouldnt be flashing some say. I disagree with that because I started the same way on my HD and eventually
was able to help new ppl to the forum. We all have been there at some point trying to learn and being clueless then finally getting it. For instance I was
looking at a theme thread and there was no instruction from the author am I just suppose to know what to do with the file being that Im not a week into
this and have never dealt with android? Also what to write in some command prompts is not the same for everyone different and thats not always clear.
With that being said this being a new device I would hope that things will be more written out to help and if its not at least be able to get help. This is just
in some cases not all . Again I am thankful for everyones work on here.
Now with the files I have trouble with are pretty much every file I have placed on my sd card not being recognized except Modocas rom until I renamed it
update.zip. Until then in recovery nothing would be recognized and even still the rom failed to install in which I have no clue why and have been seeking an
answer and so have others. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated for me and others and also to give detail on what to do with
what we are given. Thanks to everyone who contributes on here and make the experience that much better.
Every one of the instructions that are on this forums (in the dev area) are explained in detail. You must have some core understanding of basic linux commands and android file system. Those we are not going to teach you here. There are many documents on android itself (search on google) and HTC also has a lot of documentation on flashing.
However with that said, rooting instructions were to the point and should be able to follow without issues. thefallen has written it instructions for windows/dos and I've recapped them for linux/osx. To be honest, commands are the same for adb and fastboot.
Amon_Ra also has a good instructions on how to update his recovery. Pretty much if I should recap, I'd say boot phone in boot loader and fastboot flash recovery new_recovery_image.img
As for the themes and most of the updates, always run a nandroid first and update. What do I mean by that? Nandroid is the backup utility in Amon_Ra's recovery. If you ran it, you can restore to that. Call it a restore point but it's more than that (read on that so you know what it actually does). Why nandroid? So you can restore if you don't like the effects of what you just done. Now you can just update via zip that you download.
I think it's very simple. What do you need explained in detail? Most of the stuff you are requesting is simple knowledge. I am not saying I am holier. I am just saying I am used to the commands. Once you flash it a few time, it'll come to you too. But please do read up on how to restore an image from HTC. Go to HTC Global, and support and pull up google ION.
Read thru the instructions. If you are still confused, feel free to PM me.
If recovery is only recognizing update.zip, are you sure you have Amon_Ra's recovery on there? Have you tried to reflash his recovery image?
Thank you guys. I figured out what I was doing wrong.
I am a moderate to complete noob and confused on something at the moment.
I rooted using the downgrade version and then unrevoked3 (followed the steps in djr3z video guide exactly). I have had no problems flashing roms/kernels etc, but cannot seem to change the splash screen. I am tired of having a white torch in my hand every time I boot up my phone so I would like to change it. My phone shows "s-off," so what more am I missing? If someone could point me in the right direction of what to do I would greatly appreciate it even though I know this is a beginner question and has been talked about previously.
Thanks fellas.
In the "themes and apps" section, there are several threads with boot screens on them. You download the one you want, place it on your SD card, and flash it using clockwork or Amon recovery. It's quite simple, really.
Hi!
I'm new here but I've been searching and reading for a while about how to flash a ROM in my A500.
I've already rooted it, but the battery doesn't run as long as it did when it wasn't rooted so I thought about flashing a ROM.
Here's my doubt, I don't use ir for very special purposes, I just use it for browsing on the Internet and such things like this. In your opinion, installing a ROM would be the solution? If so, which one would you recommend me to flash? I've readed about Thor one but I'm not quite sure about it.
Moreover, I've been reading how to flash a ROM but the most I read, the worst it is. Depending on where I read it says something different. So, on the whole, can somebody link me to a good tutorial which I could follow? I've just rooted it, but I've done nothing about the bootloader or the recovery.
Thanks to everybody.

Rooting the tab has nothing to do with your battery life. All it does, is allow you access to the protected system of the OS. If you have no need to "experiment" with custom ROMs, and don't like to mess around with things, then it's probably best if you left it alone. If not done properly, installing new bootloaders and Recovery images can lead to a lot of time consuming problems. Just read the Q&A threads about "bricked" devices. Although Dev's try to make things as easy and trouble free as they can, problems can and do happen.
As with your battery, Take a look at Settings/Apps/Running. See how many you have running. It's possible you have some apps that are running when they don't need to. Also apps you downloaded (FB apps, Social networking, News apps etc). These apps do "synchs" and "updates" and too many of them, and also widgets, can use a lot of battery. If possible, set the synch or update period to a longer time. Instead of 5 minutes for a FB update, set it to 30. You would be surprised how much this helps.

The problem is that nothing was changed after the rooting (except the installation of Whatsapp) and after this, the battery life is, moreless, half of the original was. I've been looking in the task killer and there are plenty of apps which are auto-executed, and even if I kill them, they are still running. So my idea is to install a ROM like the Thor one, with no apps installed by default by Acer and this should make the battery last longer.
Now, what I'm not sure is what is the exact process. Correct me if I'm mistaked. What I should do first is to unlock the bootloader, shouldn't I? (Any tuto?) After this, I should install the Acer Recovery Installer app which would help me to install the recovery and after this I have to copy the .zip file to the SD card and, from the recovery menu, flash it. Is everything correct?
Thanks to everybody.
EDIT: I've already read somewhere else a ver "easy" step by step tuto. It only consists of installing an app called ROM Manager. From it install the recovery ClockworkMod and, from the recovery ClockworkMod, flash the ROM. Will this tuto work for the Iconia A500?

DO NOT INSTALL OR USE ROM MANAGER. You will brick your tablet. That app,is made for phones, and phones only.
What you need to do, is go to Civato's thread on how to install the unlocked Bootloader & Recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425
It's best to download a custom rom.zip to your ext Sd card first, that way after doing bootloader and recovery, you can install the new rom.
As always, follow all instructions, and read them many times till you understand what you're doing. If you have a question, ask the question in the correct thread (bootloader questions in the bootloader thread, rom install questions in the Rom thread, etc)
Good Luck

Presumably like all of you who have unlocked your bootloader, I am faced each time I boot with the garbage page with random text telling me "my software cannot be checked for corruption". Can anyone tell me where that page is stored (partition or folder) would be thankful for any information.

Its not random, and if you look closer its a bootmenu. you can get past it marginally quicker by just tapping power button or use it to boot to recovery, fastboot/bootloader, etc.
And you cannot remove it.
You can go back to b20...
@nujackk and @lafester .. Thanks both of you for your comments. @nujackk I accept that the screen is a way of booting into fastboot mode, I just never used it, before I installed TWRP I always used MiFav Recovery to boot into fastboot. I am presuming that the screen is an integral part of the boot image and I shall continue to try and hunt it down.
@lafester as always lol your comment.
If either of you are interested I am just going to set up a new thread in "Themes Apps and Mods" where I shall post 3 flashable zip boot animations and hopefully in the coming days I will add to them.

The screen is part of the bootloader image. I strongly advise you to just live with it since if you screw up the bootloader you're bricked.
Might I suggest you start by looking around in the bootloader unlock zip. Might give you some idea where it is or if it can be removed.
Also look at older list mentioning it, I remember seeing mention of other phones it's been used on, maybe someone has more info in one of those forums.
And I will look for those boot animations. If I can suggest a superman or superAndy would be nice

I know what you are talking about - on older motorola phones we did away with it - it was just a stored image in those phones. Seeing as how here it is a fully functional menu I would bet any attempt to remove or replace it would most definitely brick the phone. I gave up on it a long time ago.
@lafester .. @nujackk .. @bkores .. @tabletalker7 .. Thanks guys for all your comments - I guess my next step eventually, there is no great hurry for this, is to make certain I have a couple of good backups before messing around with disassembling the bootloader and boot image. If I ever get anywhere with this I will let you guys know.
@nujackk I note your comments re the animations. I'm about to add another Andy animation to the thread but have searched in the past for usable Superman material without much success, however I will see what I can find.
Yeah I haven't seen many that were very good either, but keeping hope alive :fingers-crossed:
Hello to all forum members. :highfive:
Recently I got into my hands the Samsung S4 SGH-I337 version of AT&T, at least I think so. The current version of Android on it is 5.0.1.
When I set the phone to recovery mode, I think I see the modem version: I337UCSGOK3. Correct me if this is not the modem version, but I am sharing it because I guess this information will be helpful to make alternative software installation.
I've already spent 7 days trying to change the software, reading one by one what I will find about such an update. I tried tons of instructions and they all didn't let me do upload/change somehow software nor even install TWRP.
Tried to upload TWRP (I think I found 6 different files) using different applications from the original Android system - Failed. ie. I used TWRP straight from the system, I also used Flashify. When I use this Flashify app I installed TWRP, but it didn't let my phone go into recovery mode, it just went straight to the download. For me it looks like there is something to not let flash/change this to TWRP.
I tried to upload TWRP via ODIN, it doesn't work, it crashes during installation with error messages.
I also tried to upload lineageos version lineageos.17.1.recovery.img via the normal recovery mode, but every time I try I get an error about the signature not matching.
I tried to upload the software by ADB, I have had connection, I was able to see the phone, but I can only use adb sideload recover.img command and although I tried different images and .zip files, unfortunately nothing works. I think I also get an error that the signature does not match.
Can I ask you for some hints, maybe some instructions that will really work. Many instructions were based on specific versions of the bootloader, is what I called the modem above maybe I named this wrong and this is the bootloader version? If so, does anyone know about the instructions for this version of the bootloader? It seems to me after my problems that it is strangely blocked. Maybe someone knows how to make it work. I would like to change the software to change the system language to Polish. Unfortunately, the apps: MoreLocale2 and Language Enabler and probably about 4 others from the play store are not working.
Of course, the phone is rooted with Kingoroot, the applications detect that there is root, after all, after selecting the Polish language, it does not work in the system.
I would like to change Androind 5.x to LineageOS, because there you can do much more and it works better, more efficiently and saves battery. And I will be able to change language defenetly.
this is not the first time when I do that things. I have changed the regular S4 jfltexx many times, this is not the slightest problem for me.
Summarizing:
1. I would like to change the language to Polish, if it doesn't work or it won't be possible, it's a waste of time or something else
2. I would like to unlock the bootloader and upload TWRP, it can be CWM if anyone knows it will work and has an instruction that I can test
3. Then I would like to upload lineageos.
I'd appreciate any hints to test these things above.
On page:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=81418691&postcount=29
I read that it will be possible to upload TWRP, but if it is a special version of TWRP prepared for this phone. Will someone be so nice and tell me if something like this exists and if so, where can I find such TWRP for uploading via ODIN.
Thank yo all for your time spending to read this.:good:
PS: Dear Moderators if this thread is not in proper place please correct this. Thank you.
Those instructions are for another bootloader. Your bootloader is locked, which is why TWRP won't install. There is no way to unlock it or downgrade. You also can't boot AOSP based ROM like Lineage OS. What you can do is root the phone and install touch wiz based ROM like Golden eye ROM by using the flash fire app if you're on lollipop or safe strap recovery if you're on kit kat.

Big Thank You for your suggestion and answer on my question.:good:
Right now I have Lolipop installed on the phone so related to this above I can only install something with touchwiz. Hope it will let me to change language to the Polish.
Would you be able to point me some links to instruction, please. I try to find this on forum but failed (getting ROM for nintendo). At least links to the software so I can try using flashfire app. The best it will be instruction, as I have situation in which when I use this app phone want boot after. Maybe it was related to the software, which I shouldn't use or maybe I do this in not proper way.
For everything what I get I'm saying thank you. :highfive:
No problem, I help when I can. The flash fire app you can get from the Google play store I believe, but your phone might need a specific version like the Verizon S4 does I don't know. The touch wiz ROMs are in this forum under Android development, go there and you should see ROMs like golden eye which is a touch wiz based ROM.
Here's a link that might help you, but the S4 is an old phone so it's hard to find links and guides that aren't buried deep in the forum posts.

Let me check this and back with the details what is working.
Alright man, good luck! I may not be able to help much further though, as I now have a Galaxy S10 and my S4 is just my storage phone, but I can try if it's something I know.
